"A lot more than four bubble teams. Yeah. I think the royals are going to be better than what people expect. I think the guardians with that pitching staff, you know, who knows if they find their way. I think the Marlins pitching staff is really interesting. I'm not going to pick him as a playoff team, but Tam, I think you and I are on the same page. As the season goes along, there might be some other teams that emerge. All right, sir. Thanks for doing this. All right buster see you soon. Zero zero 9 6. This is the numbers game with Sarah Lang's. Their legs reporter and producer for MLB dot com, Sarah, how are you doing this morning? I'm doing a great bounce there. How are you? I'm doing great. Although I can tell like I'm in Florida and you're in Arizona and the time difference is we tape on Monday morning. Certainly coming through and I apologize for having my 6 coffee like energy in the morning as you're just sort of waking up. You know, these things happen and of course, you know, normally even 9 a.m. on the east coast is the early for me, so we got the Arizona time zone going. It is great. It's because baseball is going on. It is all so worth it. And so wonderful. All right, Michael conforto is still the number one free agent or number one free agent still on the board. There are trades to come. At least that's the expectation in the industry that the Oakland athletics at some point are going to trade Frank Frankie montas and Shawn mania, which team among the contending teams you feel like is most in need of adding one of those Oakland starting pitchers. It feels like it has to be the Yankees. I mean, if you talk about the rotation, once you get to your coal, you sort of have some questions. I mean, we really haven't seen much from Louise severino since about 2018 at this point. Jordan Montgomery nest Cortez Domingo Herman is injured. There's Luis hill. Clark Schmidt potential and of course Jameson ty owne, but it seems like they really need that additional arm to bolster them if they're going to compete in the east. I completely agree with you. Like I wonder after the Red Sox signed Trevor story if there's now going to be pressure on the Yankees to make that deal. All right, let's play the numbers game. Number three. Number three is one 59. So that was the batting average against Luke Jackson's slider last year. And that's really just my entry point to talk about this brave bullpen. We saw how good they were in the postseason that really carried them and kept them in it throughout the regular season as well as they went through injury as Acuna, whoever else, but they just have so many different looks, obviously. Now with Kenley Jansen, they have Colin McHugh, who you and I were emailing about a couple weeks ago. He had one of the most unique seasons as a reliever in baseball history. He'll go a couple of innings but not too many. And he's very good, usually guys who are going a few innings or more in mop up duty. You have a guy like Darren O'Day who throws 85 with a great slider. He got hit pretty hard last year, but in the past has been really good. You've Tyler Matt said 97% on barrel rate aloud and again, that Jackson's slider has some of the most vertical movement along with Matt dick and Kelly Jansen also on those lists. Number two number two is -22. So how many outs above average the Yankees had defensively last year? 25th in the majors, not very good. Keeping Anthony Rizzo will make their defense a lot better this year. Isaiah kind of falafel as we talked about was definitely a defensive acquisition and that's going to help a lot. Josh Johnson last really good defensive season was a couple of years ago, but he still will help their and the biggest thing is shortstop with kind of flat that they were -14 there. Last year, 27th and the majors, but I think having high or full up, there will really, really help. And we'll see. I mean, they made a big upgrade at catra as well, just by the fact that they won't have guarantee. Number one number one is -16th. So that was the Tiger's outs above average last season, 22nd in the major. They had a lot of defensive issues. Adding hobby Mayans is a huge moon plus 9 outs above average in 2020 when he last really paid the position. He was plus 31 in 2019 and Tucker barnhardt is a brand framer. He was 79th percentile in framing and 2021. He didn't have any defense and run. Save last year, but he was plus 8 in 2020, Detroit catchers and -14 depends and runs saved in 2021, which was 28th and the mayors. All right, sir, before you go, give me the team, you're picking to win the World Series. I think it has to be the doctors. I mean, everything they've done, everything they continue to do. It feels like they're going to be the pick for the next 5 to ten years at this point. Yep. I think you're right. When people talk about that lineup and the strength of it, it's funny because I've had people hurt people say it's the best lineup we've seen. I'm like, no, it's like every other Dodger lineup with a depth that they have. Yes. It's crazy. All right, Sarah, thanks for doing this. Thanks so much for having me. Bleacher.

"And you mentioned right now where they are relative to the Reds were the Padres are I think this wild card game is going to include the Cincinnati Reds and then the Giants or the Dodgers. I really expect the Padres to fall out of this thing. They've got almost no momentum right now. They had a disappointing trade deadline. I referenced how the deadline and the Yankees moves really gave them new life. The Padres start, Jim. They were going to wind up with Max Scherzer and or Joey Gallo and got neither of them. And they've never been the same team since they're eight and 12 since the deadline, a negative run differential since the deadline, they really have struggled. So, Jim, I think the Padres what we were building this year as the great Dodger Padre race. It's just not going to happen. I think the Padres are going to miss the playoffs and the Cincinnati Reds. Vladimir Gutierrez has been very good for them of late as as Louise Castile, with Joey Votto having a resurgence. The Cincinnati Reds. Jim make the playoffs ahead of the Padre. It's amazing, right, and it's not in any way unfair. Everything you just said. I think as merit I agree with that. I mean the expectation John coming in. Was that the N L West, and indeed, the entire NL was probably going to come down to a battle between the Dodgers and Padres. You and I have spoken about that in the past. What about the Giants, though the Giants have the best record in the division? And in all of baseball, just how good is this team? Well, they're really good. Now, The question is, will they be better than the Dodgers? Ultimately, I still think the Dodgers have a better chance to win the National League than the Giants. Do. I think the Dodgers have the better club. But the Giants are a great team because they've had resurgent performances from a lot of their mainstays Posey Crawford belt and they've had some younger players come in as well. You strum Skis had some good moments that he had some injuries this year as well, but he has really played well for them in the outfield this season. And they made the right moves, of course, bringing Chris Bryant Bryant was exactly the player they needed. And maybe they find a way to keep them long term. He just looks so comfortable playing in San Francisco right now and then their pitching staff. Kevin Gausman has been great on a one year short term deal. Alex would the same thing. These companies were very good. The bullpen has been sort of a collective effort where they don't have that big name closer, but they've been able to mix and match and really have success with a lot of different pictures in very good role. So you've got to credit gate capper with the way that he's managed this club. And you. You now know, I think is one thing you love about the severe Giants fan. You have some name brand guys who have been there before Posey has got rings. Crawford has got rings. Else has got ring has got rings. Bryant has the ring from from Chicago. You've got a lot of players would know how Alex would got a ring with the Dodgers. You have got some players who understand how to win in October. And so while a lot of pundits, I guess myself included Think the Dodgers overall still have the better roster. The Giants are a club that I think people are going to hear from in October, and if people are dismissing them and saying, Well, it's just a good start. Sort of a fluky. Good first half know they've been great all season long and deserve a lot more respect than I think a lot of people being given the San Franciso Giants this season. Hell, yes, that's not a good start. That's a really good team. John Ross is joining us. John. What about the Dodgers? They've used a franchise record 37 pitchers this year 22 of them. Who pitched for them this year, did not pitch for them last year. 13 of them were not even in the organization at the start of the season. I mean, it's amazing what do you make of how the team and the organization has managed and juggled all of that? What's a great point, Jim about how adaptable they are, and you've got a credit Andrew Friedman and his group at the front office and then will rhymes and on the player development side of what they've been able to do, because I saw them play in person in New York over a couple couple days in a row last weekend or two weekends ago, and their adaptability in their bullpen is extraordinary. Corey can able. They brought him over from the Brewers in a trade. A very savvy move. Alex Valencia has been great for them from the left side. He is a he has become a trusted guy. Layton games And he was someone that just came up through the system and really developed. You've just gotta credit when a when A team has the resources of the Dodgers, and they can pay elite closers like Kelly Jansen. But then also have room to also pay and development. Take chances on the Blake. Try men's and the Corey Can. Abel's. There are patient with greater all he has come back and pitch well, The CIA has been really good. They're able to make the move for Max Scherzer. It's a really great story, and then David Price, David Price, let's not forget. He is a sigh Young award winner in the past, he started out of the bullpen, and his buy in is so strong that You didn't hear a single word from him about complaint about starting in the bullpen, and he starts in the bullpen. Now he's starting games. More recently, Schurter comes in trade. Turner comes into the deadline as a position player, of course. Albert Pools. And when I asked Albert Pools about This team Jim about how unique they are, he said. To me as many words. I've never been on a team with this amount of accomplishment on it. Top to bottom, you think about pools in the M V. P. C has won Kershaw and his MVPs and the Guy Young's, of course. Uh, Seager, a World Series M V P That's an M V P Bellenger and M v P Max Muncy might be an M V P someday. Trade Turner might be an MVP this year, so there's just a lot of players Jim, who are superstars with self less personalities. And when you're on a team with that kind of talent, and that kind of collective thinking and looking out for your teammates and what's best for the group Man, it's a special.

"Who. He's had. He's had kelly. Jansen is not the right guy to have the back anymore that he's the manager well but he has she has to. That's still your player and as the job of a manager is to have the backs of your players. He's not going to go out and talk to the media for like. Oh that's it we're done with kenley jansen. You're never seeing this guy again. No let's go out there and he right. Let's if if this was like honest time for the manager sure of course he would go out there and say that. But that's not what's happening. He's going to go out there and he's gonna sake. I still got faith in kenley jansen. There's a whole bunch of other things going on here. Use a forever dodger. He was born and raised the dodger. Though it's a manager says it's not always what it means. I'm telling you scott. He's going to have to have a big save in the playoffs for the seem to in the world series. He's gotta happen at least once. Well they're going to have to listen guys like this say guys closers in particular gotta have short memories cliche to say but clinton where i come from on all of this is is a field goal kicker and sometimes you get put in a pressure situation and hopefully you succeed but sometimes you fail and if you fail and you let it screw you up for the next day the next game you're gonna be in there very long kevin. Jansen is a guy with over three hundred plus saves in his career. He's had good days and along the way he's had plenty of bad days. Plenty of blown saves you just got to get rid of it. You just gotta get it out of your head. And i just think that mere mortals like ourselves don't necessarily have that in our game and and whereas somebody who's already got this sort of career going probably does so i'm not giving up on the guy yet and i don't think dave roberts will give up on them yet either companies we. Just sorry could greg i. We just analyzed that particular piece of raw data differently to me. That's a good reason to sit somebody because you know they'll be able to get it back together. That's that's basically what i'm saying. Yeah the only thing that i was gonna say. Is that in the playoffs. You talking about. How kenley jansen needs together save is probably going to be somebody like david price that comes out and and try and get that saves. It's it's not going to be aureus it's going to be. It's going to be somebody along those lines that you like all right. I trust this guy making here regard. Well he's not he's not going to be in the rotation no he's not gonna be he's going to be an important spot. Start long relief guy if somebody blows is what he's going to be. I don't think he's gotta be lewis. He's going to be late high leverage. I think he's gonna be. I think it depends. It depends on it. Depends on the situation right. I mean it depends on what's happening. He that's why he's a great pickup. A great depth player to have on your on your staff. look john. smoltz did it when he was doing it for a long time he was. He was an amazing starting pitcher and then he moved to being an amazing closer. This hack into example of this right so that those things happen all the time then david price. He's been in the bullpen this season and now he's been stretched out so that he can be a starter right now and he's going about four but he can. He can go back into that role these types of situations. Where in the playoffs. If you need somebody to get outs you're probably going to trust into high leverage situation. If it's not trying or somebody else that you pick up. David price might get a shot. They're gonna make the playoffs first sidebar. They'll make the playoffs. They're pretty much guaranteed to make the playoffs at least to get into the wild card. There's a lot of games to be played. I don't know that we'll call it a guarantee quite yet although obviously everything is trending nonetheless. Listen real quick. Let me let me say this coming up. So usc and ucla football in particular have got to look around. What's happening on the landscape of college. Football if oklahoma and texas the big twelve to jump to the sec. What's next how does it. Impact the local teams. I definitely want to get their stick around. Clinton yates is in bergman's here unique is in the house. What you need to know is coming up right around the corner so hang out for that. We got.

"Closer met orange moving back to setup role. What do you think. Absolutely i mean you know. I think they key here is absolutely the volatility of individual relievers and of the reliever market. So he's having such a great season and on the heels of not having some great seasons right so i think it's a really smart move for him to capitalize that and absolutely by the red sox as well i mean if he pitches the way he has been which every you know underlying stat indicates that he will. Then you're in a really great spot and as you said you know. I'm sure that being under contract and being in that situation might make him more open to pitching in any inning that they might need him and set the team up and certainly you know they're pitching was perceived as potentially weakness entering year in particular relief. Pitching he's been so good that it just makes all in the world. I think to you know lock him up there and continued him and as you said just so many relievers on the market feels like every year. But there's a lot of big names you know. Maybe some that are at different points in their careers. Whatever else but just even with right as something game kelly. Jansen rosenthal. You don't necessarily want to be out there in market so if you're able to get a deal now as he was a lot of sense and think about what's on the horizon for the red sox is a try to hang onto this. Lead is down the stretch. They get chris sale coming back in. You would assume that they will be in conversations with other teams about adding a reliever like a great kimbrel. Sarah thanks for doing this. Things about stare bleacher.

"Is a reckoning moment here for Giants fans. I know it's only May, and I know there's four more Dodger Stadium, but we got to sort of take a step back and evaluate what the heck happened because we hadn't seen anything like it all season. And she's to think the Dodgers were up without Corey Seager and Cody Bellenger and even without Mookie Betts the last two days Made it all the more alarming. So, Mike, we're coming to you on the human guest line to say First of all. Good morning, Mike. And second of all saying, help, Dr Kruk. Oh, what's that? What do we do? Give Mike how are you, man? We do Well, you remind yourself that it's only May and you get four more next weekend, and then you take a look at what happened this weekend and You know, you get a good cry intel go sit in the corner and, you know, let it all out. I mean, that's what you do. Um, they got dominated by their starting pitching, and that really is the difference. Guys got a good start on Friday night from Alex would. I thought that was really a good game, and they just couldn't get the big hit. Um And then you know you take a look at the Saturday's game. You think? Well, kids, Bullpen J. I thought Scott Cashmere did great. I mean, he gives up two hits to, uh Max Muncy, basically a home run and four innings, he gives up one run two hits, Amuse fantastic, Better break down in the bullpen, and that cost him a game and then the game yesterday, um It just all went awry. And with peace Cavani who had been so good, I mean, he came in with the New York area. Two point Look, it is here. It was so low that he took tenor and runs yesterday in the CRE Now Street five. That's still good, right? So it just didn't happen for me. He had a bunch of doing key hits, and they had chances to get out of everything if you would have been able to get Who you re Assad. Julio. Reassert too great a patch. One was a bone crusher made a one it running a three run ending and then his next it bad. I mean, it really broke open the big third anywhere they gave up seven so, but look starting pitching for the Dodgers was fantastic, 19 or 13 years ago, 11 hits, gave up four runs. They were really good. And then the whole Syriza. The Giants only got 16 hits period. Struck out 32 times. That's It's being dominated and So I mean, you just turn the page and take a day off Regroup. Lick your wounds and go down Arizona play Good ball. The thing about about, um, emotional, serious like that. You can get well in the next series. That's the beautiful thing about a six game schedule as much as you hated to lose your moment. Um, that was coming out that road trip and lose three to your rival in front of your home fans. I mean, that's a brutal weekend, especially the way the last one ended, but, you know, forget about it. Move on. Well, it's It's just so you know, it was huge. The stakes were big and then it was a big report card and everything And of course, like we said, they have to in Arizona and four in L. A. And it's only May and all that. It just felt like Significant moment, so a little bit more on the Dodgers starting pitching because I just Wow, especially Bauer Friday and Bueller Saturday. Um, judge her good hitting team, and they couldn't They couldn't make contact off. These guys is that That dominance from Bauer and Bueller. If you could speak to that in the way they attack Giants hitters, this is a team had just scored. 19 runs the day before in Cincinnati. Mike Yeah, I do think it was a team is a bit tired Come into the serious because of the Eastern swing. Four days are, you know, eight days in a row and no day off going into the weekend, I think That had a little bit to do with it. Not that I'm making excuses. I don't take anything away with what I saw from Bueller and Bauer. The thing that stood out about those two guys Is that they never really established a real great feel of their curb all their cutter and their change up. When they had their back against the wall there, almost telling the guys what what was coming, then what was coming with the fastball? They couldn't hit it. Mean Brandon belt. I mean, he left the ballpark two days in a row talking themselves, he swung through. I don't know how many built high fastballs just one after another, and they they there was just no respect on the on the location. Doing right down metal plate above the belt. You couldn't get him. Michael Strips couldn't hit him. Like talk man couldn't hit him one after another. I mean, you look at what Bauer did. You know when they were gonna extend them. They had a dinged up hope in coming to the game. They had their top three. Gonzalez and Kelly and and and Kelly Jansen. They had all thrown three out of four days and two consecutive days going into that serious so they weren't going to use him. Like China was going to be the closer so They basically asked about to go go deep, and he 126 pitches. But the last 40 pitches, he didn't have anything with a fastball. I mean, I thought that was pretty macho. And I don't like to give that guy any compliment. But you have to tip your cap to that effort, man that was manly and And then we saw the same thing. The Bueller Bueller. I mean, it's rare that he doesn't have a curveball or or Ah cutter and didn't throw many cutters at all. But I mean, he got down to the point where he was throwing nothing but fastballs, too. Because that's what he had. That's what he had to work with. And they couldn't They couldn't do anything with him. That was impressive. Yeah, I was at the Friday and Saturday games, and I just could not get over the dominance of that. Pitching to the Giants vision. You were right. Guys were just swinging and missing. Darren Rough out a bigot bat, right? Um, think Saturday game where there was still and I think he I think he got blown away to, um, looked at one through strong through him. So you know, I guess they're that good. Right the pictures of that good in the Giants because I mean, the Giants have been hitting the ball this year. That's what kind of Kind of tied me up in the not too so you know that?.

"Fashion, taking a 53 decision and 10 innings. Over the Dodgers in Los Angeles with a man on in the fifth. Jesse Winker comes to the plate. Here's to Cowboy. Hammered left center field and Winker got all of it back to the wall and going to run shot by Jesse Winker and the Reds have taken a 53 lead opposite field juice. From the Reds to hole hitter. And that's what the Reds wanted when they put weaker in the number two spot. They wanted somebody on base when he came to the plate with the 10th inning gives in just that Laker hit the game winner hit the game winner off a Dodger closer, Kelly Jansen. I know he throws a lot of cutters. I got a great scholar report from seeing Joe right before, um Had a plan and just just kind of went for it, Um Just try toe, put the barrel on the ball and hit it hard somewhere. Tyler Malli started went five innings lying around on five hits. A mere Garrett's troubles continued. He gave up a two run homer to Corey Seager to tie the game three all in the seventh. But the Reds win it in 10. TJ Antone. Brilliant and relief. Three innings. Three case. Yeah, Yeah, it was fun. Uh, went in expecting one in a through and through a second.
