"News. I'm Ari Shapiro and I'm Mary Louise Kelly. Democrats Control the White House, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Theo Geo P is already busy trying to figure out how to take all three back. We'll have to wait on the White House. Next shot won't come, of course until 2024. But that leaves the challenge of trying to flip the house and the Senate in 2022 next year. One man with a key role on the Senate side is Rick Scott. He's the junior senator from Florida. And he is chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which is devoted to helping Republicans when Senator Scott joins me now, Senator Welcome to all things considered. Glad to have you with us. It's nice to be with you. My release. So you sent a letter yesterday in your role as NRSC chair in which you announced quote the Republican Civil War is now canceled. Let's start there. Explain what you mean. Well, I think what's really important is we focus on the future. Um, I've had four statewide races. I've had one primary. Three generals and the reason I want is focused on where I was going. And not about the past, and I think it's important that we focus on what Americans care about. So I think what's important is we talk about the issues and I think the Bible menstruation. It actually helping us by not securing the border. You know, not getting schools open the spending. It's not going to end up very popular when people see what's in the bill thinks like that Bill. Yeah. Yeah, So if you look it in the cover to release Bill, all of us would love to have two people lost their job. All of us would love to help small businesses. Let's make sure we get back scenes out. Let's make sure we have ever best testing. That's a very small part of the bill. We've already given our school $68 billion last year. They've spent four billion so this idea that they need more money to open. He's just a fallacy and and the covert bill. It's only a very small percentage of the even would go to their schools this year, so the by demonstration is not following the sign. And they're not being honest about the need for money. So I think when people look in there, let me just pause you before we get into the details of the covert bill because I want to stay with your big picture argument about Republicans and whether there is a civil war and if so, it is now canceled and I take your point that you want to look forward and not back. So let's look to 2022. Because I know you have been speaking to former President Trump about it. You've apparently been very specific about how he could be helpful with congressional races. How can he be helpful? What do you need him to do? Well, there's nothing today but what I you know, I spoke to him last year right now. What does that mean? No, no, that right now. I'm not asking for anything. But what I told him is that my goal is I'll be very specifically what I believe you can be helpful. I hope you'll be helpful. You know, everybody that has a following I said the same thing. T President Bush. I want him to be helpful to us. I want everybody. There's gonna help our senators win elections to be helpful to us. And I'll ask, and I'm very comfortable that if I can, you know, make sure that we're focused on the issues. We would cook it candidates. We're gonna have a great 22. Do you believe Donald Trump will be helpful. Even though a lot of folks a lot of Republicans hold him responsible for losing the two Senate seats in Georgia. Can't you like everybody has the opportunity to be helpful. But you know, we've got a little lesson two years for the elections. So that's when people going to get the vote. So we'll see you. You know where the public is what issues are important. A time, but I mean, look, I come from this a little bit different background. I got into my governor's race in 2010. When every basic Republican in the country had endorsed my opponent. I had zero name I d. Nobody believed I had a shot at winning and I won Because every day I got up, I talked to people and I focused on the issues that were important. Although family just press you on this specific point, the president has not been shy about saying he's happy to support challenges against sitting Republican senators and against sitting Republican officials writ large there a lot of questions about this. How does that play out? In his scenario where you're backing candidates were running primaries against candidates that Trump is backing. I believed every incumbent on the Senate side that's running is gonna win the primary and gonna win there. General election. You know where What I'm really focused on right now is recruiting good candidates in Ohio and Pennsylvania in North Carolina in Alabama, and then where we have pickup opportunities. We should be able to pick up Mark Kelly's holding and what one I sold it. And the reason is centers in Arizona and Georgia. They talked about me. Think about it. Mark Kelly voted against border security. What I mean, How could you do that? I think you're gonna win the election in Arizona and what you know, voted to give similar shuts took illegal immigrant without parsing the details of their voting records. I want to circle back to back for second. That's why we win. It's about voting records. It's about where you stand to stay with the point about winning elections. For the record. Do you accept that Joe Biden won the election? Absolutely said he's he's a sitting president and legitimate, lawfully elected president. Absolutely goodbye, then won the election..

"They need to be very, very cautious and how they fight it, And they probably don't want it to turn out how the cabin all hearings turned out two years ago. I don't think that was a very good look for them. Now living here in Arizona. I have two questions I would like answered, and I'm guessing a lot of voters here. What is well first is Senator Kirsten Cinema plan to meet privately with Amy Cockney Barrett. Again. That's what's going to happen over the next couple of weeks. Private interviews with senators, I have a pretty good idea about how cinema is going to vote because she's a Democrat. This will be a very partisan vote. I don't think again. I don't think and I really hope this won't be as ugly as the cabin all hearings. But I don't think you will see Barrett get one Democrat vote and almost all Republicans will vote for at least enough to get her confirmed because, remember, they have the tie breaking vote if it comes to that, with vice president Mike Pence. I also want to know how Mark Kelly, Democrat who's trying to take Republican Senator Martha McSally seat will vote and why now, we have invited both senator cinema and more Kelly to come on Arizona's morning news this week. So we'll see how that goes the process of nominating and confirming judges and justices. You know, I found this. Not even an issue of is this person qualified anymore because they are all qualified. The ones that we have seen nominated over the past dozen years. 20 years at least that and I'm just talking about since I've been following politics. They're all qualified, whether you agree with what they believe or not, they are qualified to serve on the bench. It's almost like politicians, though. The Senate and specifically is holding their own election on who they want sitting on the bench. It's all about the issues. And does this judge potential justice agree with me on the issues?.

"Ah, Judge must apply the law as written judges air, not policy makers, and they must be resolute and setting aside any policy views they might hold. Amy Cockney Baron, nominated for the Supreme Court by President Trump on Saturday. Confirmation hearings are scheduled began October 12. But will she be confirmed before November 3rd a lot of time? Because if you really look, you know we don't have to do it before, but I think this will be done before the election. I think it was Send the great signals to a lot of people. Now the president would probably secretly tell you he wants her confirm before the election so she would be there to potentially break a deadlock if the results of the election or challenged in the courts as it is. Been suggestion suggested. That will happen now. Democrats want Amy Cockney barrel to commit to recusing herself from any election related cases, but they cannot force her to do that. It's up to each individual justice to decide if there is indeed. Conflict of interest. No Democrats are also powerless to stop barrettes confirmation process because Republicans or the party in power to Democrats centers, though, have already said they just flat out came out over the weekend and said they will not meet with her for a private interview. That happens a lot. Though the nominees the judges and the justices that are nominated they meet individually with senators before the hearing and the vote. But they say they're not going to because two of them have because they're afraid she's going to vote to fully repeal Obama care. In fact, here's the Joe Biden said Yesterday Judge is written as a written track record written tracker of Disagreeing adamantly, but the Supreme Court decisions on two occasions upholding the which is the affordable care act. Democrats are also afraid Amy Cockney Barrett, Being on the high court will lead to the end of Roe vs Wade, which leads me to the fact that she is a devout Catholic. She will be that perhaps could become a big topic during the confirmation hearings. Here's what Valley political expert Emily Ryan, with copper State Consulting told if the conversation starts to go that direction If Democrats take the bait and start to criticize or put an emphasis on her religious choices, you will see that become a major Cham. Pain issue in the remaining final days going into the vote and that all benefits trump so if Democrats can't stop it, they need to be very, very cautious and how they fight it. Now living here in Arizona. I have two questions I would like answered, and I'm guessing a lot of voters would also like to know the following one Does Senator Kirsten Cinema plan to meet privately with Amy Cockney Barrett? I have a good idea about how she'll be voting because she's a Democrat. I think this is going to be and all indications are this will be a very partisan vote. Now. I don't think and I'm really hoping maybe on being more hopeful, but I'm also going going to lean toward. I'm thinking this will not be as ugly. As the cabin all hearings in 2018. I think that came off is a really bad look for Democrats what they did. Hopefully it doesn't but I don't know. I do not think you will see Barrett. Get one Democrat vote out of this. While almost all Republicans will end up voting for at least enough to get her confirmed And remember, if forever reason is a 50 50 vote in the Senate Vice President Mike Pence can and will break the tie. I also want to know how Mark Kelly Democrat who's trying to take Senator Martha McSally seat will vote and why we've also we have invited both Senator Cinema and Mark Kelly to come on the show this week to answer those questions, so we will see how that goes. News time is 5.

"This is all things considered from NPR News. I'm Ari Shapiro and I, Mary Louise Kelly. Democrats formally introduced their presidential ticket today in Delaware. That is where Joe Biden and his newly named running mate, California Senator Kamala Harris, delivered remarks. Biden announced yesterday he was picking Harris to be the first woman of color on the ticket of a major political party. Here's what he had to say today and this morning. All across the nation. Little girl's woke up, especially little black and brown girls. So often feel overlooked an undervalued in their communities. But today today just maybe They're seeing themselves for the first time in a new way. As the stuff of president. Vice president's Let's bring in NPR political correspondent as Mahala to talk through all that was sudden done at this event today. Hey, there Asthma! Hi, my lease, So let's start with Kamala Harris. This is the first time we have heard from her as the vice presidential candidate. How'd she do what stood out to you? So I would say what really stood out to me was the forceful critique that she made against both President Trump individually And then the Trump administration. You know, she is a long time prosecutor and I would say that I think she was perhaps the most effective Democrat we've heard as of late prosecuting the case against how Trump Administration has handled a Corona virus pandemic. You know, I have heard Joe Biden criticised Trump quite a bit around Cove in 19 many times, actually in recent months, But I was never as forcefully and as detailed as sharp is what we heard from Harris today. She said. The case against President Trump is really in her view, open and shut and she compared this pandemic with the Ebola outbreak during the Obama administration. Six years ago. In fact, we had a different health crisis. It was called Ebola. We all remember that pandemic. But you know what happened then? Barack Obama and Joe Biden did their job. Only two people in the United States died, too. That is what's called leadership. But compare that to the moment we find ourselves in now. When other countries are following the science, Trump pushed miracle cures he saw on Fox News. She also criticized how Trump has handled the economy. You know, she said that he had inherited the longest economic expansion in recent history from Barack Obama and Joe Biden. And then in her words, quote like everything else he inherited. He ran it into the ground. You know, I would say that one of the key components of a vice president is to do no harm, but it is also to prosecute the case against the other side, and I think today we got a glimpse of how Harris intends to do that. We turn you asthma to how Harris is a historic selection. The daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India Ondas We heard in that clip a moment ago from Joe Biden at that was front and center at tonight's event. That's right. I mean, this is really I would say, historic prick him. There's really no way else to say this, And I think a lot of us as political journalists have described comma Harris is times is a very consensus choice. She was in some ways maybe the predictable choice that a lot of people had thought, But we should. I don't think I'm not lived sense of the fact that really this is a historic moment. We've never had a woman of color. At the top of the ticket, and Joe Biden gave a glimpse of what that all meant through. You know the biographical description he gave of comma Harris. I think it was also interesting to me, though, is that Harris also connected this moment and what it all meant back to Joe Biden's background. You probably recall there was this really public skirmish that the two of them had on the debate stage when she was running for president about busing and civil rights, and today it was noteworthy to hear because she praised Joe Biden's record on civil rights. Today he takes his place in the ongoing story of America's march toward equality and justice is on Ly as the only.

That, with confirmed Corona virus cases spiking across the sun Belt states in the last couple of weeks, a range of evidence suggests the recovery of the economy may be stalling. And the like we've had the first hot car death of the season to say that because that's a tragedy when an infant baby is left in a hot car or car. In most cases, most cases, the parent is unaware that the babies in the car, we've seen that a couple times, maybe a good ten twelve years ago, here in Cincinnati, we had back to back cases of babies being left and cars and the outcome. "Creating the office of rural prosperity that I was committed to representing all cans rural and urban tell us a little bit more about Kansas will have the pleasure of visiting Wichita later on this year for people who've never been what would you say is the one biggest thing that people think they know about Kansas? But they really don't they have no idea how common sense in how progressive Kansas really are. You know, if you look back in history, first of all we came into the country as stay as a Free State. You know, we were we were anti-slavery long before many others in. So I think that's something people don't know. We actually have a history of electing women to positions. In fact, the very first woman ever elected to any office in this country was the mayor of our Gonja, Kansas. So those are things I think people just don't remember or. Don't think about when they think about Kansas. I think partly partly that is because tickly for the last eight years. Most of what's come out of Kansas has not been good news. You know, we had the tax experiment that caused our state to crash, and you know, and then obviously we had crisco Bach in his voter suppression in an anti immigrant stances. And we also unfortunately, took some some action that was pretty negative regarding LGBTQ, we're starting to undo a lot of that. And get the real face of Kansas backout. I did want to ask you about some of that. But you mentioned that Kansas is very common sense kind of state is that what helped you build consensus between Democrats and moderate Republicans just taking a kind of a common sense approach. Common sense in collaboration. Think of all the barn. Raisings that happened in the state of Kansas as we were developing as a state, you know, that's how cannons operate. They worked together to for the common. Good. And I think that's the approach. I always took in the in the state Senate. I was the ranking minority on the budget committee. So I was in negotiations with Republicans regularly trying to put her our budget together budget is policy. So yeah, it was important for me to be able to find common ground one of the big critiques. I think of democratic politics nationwide is a focus on social issues that make some people kind of edgier uncomfortable, your first act as governor was to signed an executive order that reinstated protections for LGBT workers. It was something that your predecessor governor Sam Brownback eliminated back in twenty fifteen. How do social issues especially Forni ones, like LGBTQ rights and so forth affect? Your Bill your ability to create political consensus. Well, you know, they're they're really are think already is consensus on the LGBTQ issue. I think that governor Brownback went to the extreme, you know, if you had come to Kansas maybe fifteen years ago when we were more there. I can remember the very first vote that I took in the state Senate was the question of pudding, basically a discriminatory clause in our constitution, banning gay marriage. I voted no on that. Then it did pass. But but since then, you know, Kansas have really evolved from that position. And I think they understand the LGBTQ issues better. But they also understand that you cannot have a state you cannot attract young people. You can't keep your young people here if we have really regressive policies like that in place. We're speaking to governor Laura. Kelly democrat from Kansas about building political consensus in Kansas..

"The Michael Cohen hearings before the house oversight committee. What his concern was was that. There would be a check that has his very distinct signature onto it. And even after she cashed, the check all you need to do is make a photocopy of it, and it's kind of proof positive on exactly what took place. So here. He the goal was to keep him far away from as possible can anyone corroborate? We're listening to the this Thom Hartmann program, and we are listening courtesy of C span two. This is Kelly Kelly democrat questioning Michael Cohen before the house oversight committee. We'll right back. Let federal prosecutors, and I quote after the election Cohen sort we 'imbursement for election related expenses, including the hundred and thirty thousand dollar payment. Prosecutors stated that you and I quote, presented an executive an executive of the company with a copy of a Bank statement reflecting one hundred thirty thousand dollars wire transfer is that accurate that is accurate. Do you still have a copy of that Bank statement used to actually made part of the exhibit? So you will provide it to the committee. According to federal prosecutors executives at the company, then and I quote agreed to reimburse Cowan by adding hundred and thirty thousand and fifty thousand grossing up that amount to three hundred and sixty thousand for tax purposes, and adding a sixty thousand dollar bonus such that comb would be paid four hundred and twenty thousand in total executives of the company decided to pay the four hundred twenty thousand in monthly installments at thirty five thousand over the course of a year is that accurate those accurate. What was the purpose of grossing up the amounts essentially, doubling what you had paid to MRs miss Clifford and other because if you pay one hundred thirty thousand dollars and you live in New York where you have a fifty percent tax bracket. In order to get you one thirty back you have to have to sixty otherwise my if he gave me back one thirty I would only be out sixty five thousand what was the purpose of spreading the reimbursements to you over the twelve monthly installments that was an order to hide what the pain was obviously wanted the money in one shot would have preferred it that way. But in order to be able to. Put it onto the books. Allen Weisselberg made the decision that it should be paid over the twelve months. So that would look like a retainer and did Mr. Trump know about this reimbursement method. Oh, he knew about everything. Thank you, Mr. Cohen. So the president not only knew about the payments. He knew and help to hide the payments and the reimbursements to you. Discussed it everything had to go through Mr. Trump and had to be approved by Mr. Trump. And now you're going to prison and he's going to prison. Yes, ma'am. I you back. If I. Thank you, Mr Chairman earlier you. Yes. You yo my time. Earlier you said, I'm assuming New York's one party consent eight one person can record the other one without it being illegal, correct? But you also were a member of the New York bar. I was yes. How would you rate recording clients in the ethical realm of being aware? It's not illegal. And I not asking if it's illegal. I'm asking if I don't I don't know that we'd have to leave judgement of the bar association. So I think every other lawyer in here knows exactly where it is and the ethical standard. When you said, you had one hundred tapes where any of those types of other clients. Yes. And I think this is pretty amazing. I I really do in any of them wave privilege. No so five minutes ago in the middle of our hearing on oversight. You just immediately responded that you would you would hand over tapes to this committee without any of your previous clients, waving privilege. I'm not the only one in possession of those payments. Those documents are in the hands of all whoever else is in charge of those documents is not my concern. My concern is I know lawyers that would go to jail before they would violate attorney client privilege in a manner of a second. You just said, absolutely. I will turn those over. Just trying to cooperate sir at the expense of clients who have never waived privilege, the already in the hands of all of the agencies. As was I didn't ask what law enforcement determined to do something. And what you determined to do something client privilege and attorney trust accounts are about the two most sacred things that you can ever do in your entire career as a lawyer and matter of a second and detail with Mr. Trump legally it's out there because Rudy Giuliani wave provide not talking about Rudy Giuliani. I'm talking about you. And I don't know whose on those tapes, only, you know, who is on those types. There's a hundred of them. The other one is also subject to ongoing point is within a matter of a second one second you took. No, absolutely no calculation of your role as those clients counselor the role that plays in privacy and the role that plays in samba. You took when you pass the bar when you signed onto the bar until recently were a member of the bar in you just immediately said. If it if it helps me out in two day in front of TV. Yes, absolutely. Mr Chairman, you can have it. And I think that just goes into what we're gonna talk about next briefly. We talk about these tax these indictments on tax fraud and Bank fraud as if there is related incidents, but they're not isolated incidents of bad judgment. These were intricate elaborate lies that created near that needed to be held with constant miss. I mean, just constant deceptions of banks businesses associates accountants, potentially your family. Received over two point four million in personal loans from taxi company taxi medallion company one and those those those were blown payments for a business loan, correct? No, sir. You weren't receiving? Okay. Go ahead. Those were payments that were made. This is the Tom Hartman program. Welcome back in third hour show..

"I mean, again, this is like with beta like, heart and mind, like, I'm I'm rooting for Abrahams so much in this one, but it's very hard for me to like get my heart over the hurdle of just how wretched state Georgia's and the camp and the people who run it, I will with my heart. I'll say Abrahams wins. Okay. Why Why not? not in Georgia Hillary did decently in Georgia compared to to Brock Obama, which is pretty interesting. If you think about it because it has a very, you know, relatively large African American population. So I do think like the Georgia purple ink blooming thing is real and in a wave election. Sure. Why not? I mean, could it be very close to the point that Kemp just monkeys around with the fucking results yet? Good. I someone else said this on Twitter. But I think it's so awful. It's going to happen camp. Kim wins an incredibly narrow race where the results are challenged. They go into court, and then Brett cavenaugh provides the the siding vote to certify his election. But here's the x factor. Here's the extra after Georgia has runoffs if nobody gets fifty percent of the vote it goes to a runoff. That's right. If you remember happened in two thousand eight in the Senate race that actually would have given the Democrats a sixty vote supermajority in the Senate. They fucking punted. They did Barack Obama pointedly did not. Go there to candidate guy. No money. Nobody gave a shit. It was amazing because and maybe it was amazing that this guy Jim Martin got so close to winning Obama did not go there because he thought it was important to bring the country together more important than. Cluster proof majority in the United States. Kidding? Whoops. Whoops, drama Obama, ladies and gentlemen. But you wanna talk about voter suppression. Chris Kobe is running for governor of Kansas secretary of state and also pretty much just charged with for. He was his primary went to a recount, and you who was he was in charge of it loops and he decided he won. So I think that's just going to be a recount or a replay. And crisco Bach is the brains, and I'm using that in scare quotes behind every like he is like the guy who is like the Trump's pitch man on a national level for every for the just hokum utterly spurious idea that legal immigrants are voting or dead people. He is the GOP's resident voter fraud read voter suppression and odor is the Lyle landlady of voter suppression. He literally goes around to towns, and and and pitches them on passing very restrictive voting rules that he says, yes, they're going to get challenged in court. And then these towns, they passed the bills, and then they spend thousands or millions of dollars in courts defending them, then they're overturned and he's out of there. Okay. He's like selling fucking voter suppression too. Not every. By kansas. What's the matter with Kansas? Chris Kobe most recent poll from Emerson college crisco back forty four percent, lower Kelly democrat, forty three percents. It's a dead heat in that race. The x factor is Greg Orman. You remember that guy from last time around he ran for the Senate. He was an independent candidate. And the Democrats dropped out of the race. Because they thought he was the only guy who could possibly win that Senate race. Well, he lost. But now he's backed run as an independent candidates. And at least one bowl shows that if he weren't there lower Kelly would be leading the race. Yeah. I gotta go tie goes to the guy in charge of counting the votes and making the votes. Yeah. I'll flip it to and say that comeback wins. How about you will Kovac wins too much of a prick not too? But there's also surprisingly close races in places as red as fucking Oklahoma. If you remember in Oklahoma, they fucked up the budget so fucking bad that they have to eliminate one week of the fucking schooled with. Yeah, they were the one day. Oh, four day weeks. I mean also in Kansas as well. Sam Brownback absolutely just they were blue a decimated that state's budget at all it's educational institutions, and they literally had unpaved roads because they didn't have the money. Kidding when service them anymore? So they turn them into dirt roads. And what is hilarious about Kansas and Oklahoma?.
