"To increase production at a number of its plants in the Midwest while some of that money will go toward a couple of traditional gas burning models Ford is also planning to significantly significantly increase its production of electric vehicles demand for EVs is amped up Michael Reagan is senior editor at Bloomberg news and he's here to talk about it hi Mike Hi So the big focus of this investment seems to be on EVs What are Ford's goals For electric vehicle production Yes so their strategy is to really ramp up production to about 1 million electric vehicles by the year 2026 And to put that into perspective then we produce about 27,000 last year And that's 2 million That would be more than all of the cars they sold Yeah that's huge It's a big ambition yep So I have a 2017 Chevy Volt and just about every other day I get offers from dealers near me trying to buy it off my hands for more money than Kelly blue book says that it is worth What is happening with demand for EVs right now Well the demand is very strong but also it's this whole supply chain issue around the world especially with computer chips which is really curtailed the production of electric vehicles So it's kind of a supply and demand issue There is strong demand and the automakers just aren't able to produce enough vehicles to meet that demand because of this computer chip shortage So the Ford says this investment will create more than 6000 union jobs Is this helpful for them as they go into any kind of negotiations with the united auto workers union Yes they do have about a year ago before they are set to negotiate a new four year contract with the UAW And the thinking is that this may appease you mean a little bit because Ford had moved some production to Mexico out of the U.S. and this is kind of seen as a bit of an olive branch to the union saying look we are committed to keeping production in these Midwestern states which by the way not all states in the U.S. are friendly to unions as say Michigan and some of these other states where Ford is expanding Although is this considered a big win for Michigan Most of the jobs will go getting about half of these new jobs Yeah I think any sort of continued investment in the auto industry in Michigan is considered a win Obviously historically it's been the epicenter of U.S. auto production and that is slightly been eroded over time But for a company like Ford to make this commitment I think the people of Michigan would consider it a win Okay so the U.S. is one of a few countries that's trying to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 You've already said that demand for electric vehicles is really strong Is it strong enough for automakers to produce enough vehicles and meet that carbon emissions goal Right So it's 2050 is 28 years away There's a long time to meet that goal but you're absolutely right is the question is will the demand match the supply And how does a company like this sort of make that transition The one thing I would say is with gas prices as high as they are It really expands the appeal of electric vehicles beyond sort of the core customer who.

"New York international auto show off and running this weekend for the first time in two years things though Tim are a little bit different this year Video manager at Cox automotive and Kelly blue book follows all things cars He joined us in our studio just after walking the floor at the javits center So in years past you know you'd walk to different areas of the auto show and it was just a wall after wall of so many boosts of static vehicles and they've kind of changed that So if you go downstairs now they've got a track and you can get in you can ride in the vehicles even upstairs What I know I know indoor vehicles and this is what you can do when you have electric cars I was gonna say are these internal combustion engines that are inside the javits center There are not This is part of the electric vehicle revolution wherein you can have vehicles and not asphyxiate yourself while motoring around the auto show Well Micah talked us about this EVs We've been talking about it for years but what's different Is this the first time the show has done that You know that focus on EVs and especially driving this is a new thing And really precipitated by a couple of different things Item number one is that there's just more vehicles available There's really this proliferation right now I can tell because when I go in new vehicle launches I drive all the new stuff There's a lot more electric happening In fact if you go upstairs over to the Hyundai booth they have dedicated a large section of that area to an experience where you can ride in their new ionic 5 electric cars And in fact I drove the ionic 5 recently and it's super cool It's a really neat one thing It's one thing to be seeing these things at the auto show It's another thing to actually put a deposit down and wait for that electric vehicle to arrive Because it got to tell you My dad is still waiting for his mock E it has been months at this point In fact he's actually gotten some very interesting emails from Ford about updates when it comes to basically we have no idea when you're getting your car As a Bronco owner I'm familiar with those kinds of updates but yes so that it really keys into one of the big issues right now with electric cars and anything electrified even hybrids They are the ones with the tightest constraints in terms of supply And so there's a lot of interest in electric cars right now There's huge demand and they just can not meet that demand Is that because of what's going on more broadly with supply chains or something specific to EVs and I also do wonder about manufacturers be very careful I'm thinking about just in time inventory and all that good stuff making sure that they're not over producing Yeah I think there are a couple of different dynamics at play I mean just getting the production up to speed for these new kinds of vehicles is a challenge in and of itself And then if you think about the vehicles like the one I was driving the Hyundai ionic 5 or I also drove the Kia EV 6 recently part of being an electric car is not just being electrified but it's also looking electrified and giving an electrified experience and having big screens and advanced technology and driver assist systems and all of that stuff requires those microchips that are still in such short supply Okay so when do we start to see you actually be able to buy an EV and get it When does this supply chain start to Walk in the showroom get the car I mean that's how it used to work with vehicles until you know Until that's Elon dude right Well yeah I guess Elon when it comes to actually walking into a showroom and walking out with a car right You're doing that online now with Tesla Yeah so the dynamic that we have now is that some dealers will get you a vehicle if you've got a lot of money to spend over MSRP So it really depends on how much you want to spend and how much you're willing to wait But the supply chain should start to open up Everything I'm hearing is going into 2023 That's when the microchip shortage is just going to start to mellow So it's not like this is a short term dynamic We are kind of stuck with it But so that kind of leads to an interesting dynamic that we've seen at Cox automotive We did some research in the coffee before you walked in here I am right now Watch my videos I am always like this But I love it I love it I'm just like wow I'm going to dial it back like 20% You don't be comfortable while I'm doing nothing Go to a hundred It's cool What we had noticed in our Cox automotive study is that people are willing 42% of shoppers are willing to delay their purchase and I have two great anecdotes for that So does that mean they're making the order of their ordering their vehicle and waiting until it will arrive And oftentimes they're doing that just because the vehicles aren't available it will or because they can find a dealership that will sell at MSRP but only if they wait It's one thing to do that if you're a Lamborghini right When we talk to Lamborghini's CEO mister winkleman yesterday And he said that their time for waiting for a Lamborghini if you're a customer who puts an order and it went from you know roughly 7 to 8 months which is pretty typical for Lamborghini up to a year at this point but he's not concerned about people going elsewhere because hey if you want a Lamborghini you're going to wait for Lamborghini But does this can you say the same thing about cars that are more of a commodity Yes Yes you can My friend Mary who lives in Denver put in an order like three days ago for a Toyota rav four prime That's their plugin hybrid She was told it was going to be either 8 months to two years So yeah People will wait That's Michael musio video manager at Cox automotive and "Can you partner with a company that has registration or ownership data? And in some instances to your example, it might even be partnering with somebody that has demographic information on makeup of household. So somebody like link and might come in and say, okay, we want to build a few audiences. We want to build one in audience that is made up of people that we know that have own link against for four plus years because they're probably in market now for a new luxury vehicle after being four or 5 years old. We're going to overlay that with that intent data so that we know it's they've owned a link in for four years plus they were just on a car configuration state configuring SUVs. And we may now add the element of we know they've been through a bunch of new parenting sites and are probably expecting a child. And so we're building our prospect audience out of those elements to hopefully get us to an audience that will drive people to a dealer to buy our test drive. Time to take a one minute break to hear from our sponsor HubSpot. The holiday season is upon us and it's time to think about what matters most in life. Real connections. And your personal life is probably means spending and hopefully enjoying some extra time with your spouse, kids, Friends, extended family, and at work, it's also a great time to think about making connections. Sure, it's not all Turkey and stuffing around the office, but there's always room for connections with your customers your team and of course your martech stack. And that's why the HubSpot CRM is ready to connect the dots for your business. And just like how I'm always tinkering with my recipe for mashed potatoes, HubSpot is always adding new ingredients for marketers, like their forecasting tool that gives a bird's eye view of your entire pipeline or their custom report builder that connects and converts your data into real-time reporting. If you're ready to learn how the HubSpot CRM platform can connect the dots for your business, go to HubSpot dot com. All right, here's the rest of today's interview. There's an interesting component of this that we haven't talked about, which is what's the relationship between the publishers and the data collector? Obviously you're paying the car configuration sites for access to that data. What are those relationships look like assuming you're able to talk about them? People are paying for access to that data. And I think that's where consumers might start to feel a little icky of like I went on to cars dot com or car gurus or Kelly blue book, thinking I was configuring my car using their site. And now there are non first party data users that are collecting and aggregating my data. How do those relationships work? Yes, the creepy factor having balanced the creepy factor. How do you not be a creep, but something as marketers need to keep in mind? Kind of a big deal. Yes, it's a good question. So commercial commercial model wise, thanks to pay revenue share for every piece of data that we sell for coming in from partner. So we capture piece of data. We sell that piece of data and a partner gets it percentage of the revenue that we make off of the data elements that they provide to us. In terms of the consumer, I wish I had a better answer, but if you take your Kelly blue book example or auto trader example somewhere in their day to day usage terms, they have language that says, we are reselling or making our data available to partners and that is what drives it open and free advertising publisher and Internet ecosystem. And that is how partners of ours stay in business. Obviously. And you know, that's what keeps the Internet free and nobody wants to pay for the Kelly blue book or car gurus of the world as an end destination. They're willing to trade their information and their data in exchange for the free service. Hey, newsflash. That's the way the world works. Yes. And that's where we want to be careful in terms of definition. So us at iota, we deal in aggregated and anonymized data. What we're capturing is an aggregate of lots of users that search for cars. Lots of cookies that come from that, right, which is an anonymous identifier. And then max dropped into a category and to my earlier example, it's usually a category made up of not just that auto and tender, but even elements coming from other data suppliers that indicate new patterns or geography. And so you take all of that and you have a very large aggregated audience of lots of anonymous identifiers. So I don't know that it is new bed and that's expecting a new child down to your household and your email address. It's just a random set of cookie IVs. It's cool. I already set it on a podcast. It's public knowledge. Now, hey, everybody, we're having a baby. And if anybody has a luxury SUV that they're looking to sell, find my email address and let me know. Okay, so we were talking through some of the different funnels, the stages where there's propensity to buy, actively looking to purchase. What are some of the other segments that you think about? Sure, so there's also just general interest, right? Hobbyists enthusiasts. Our data is first off verticalized. So travel auto B2B consumer technology, and then it's intent interest and purchase based really are the three main buckets and then obviously we've demographic data. So when you go back to thinking about how an in-house marketer can build a road map, understanding that the data providers are thinking about getting ready to buy actively looking to buy ongoing hobby. They have a general understanding of age and some demographic data. How do you put that all together as a road map and actually improve your marketing strategies? Let's stick to our auto example. So there's a difference between Mercedes or Jaguar or Lincoln have their 2020 models coming out, but they're not in dealerships yet. They just want to build brand awareness. So in that instance, maybe they're simply just buying interest segments of car enthusiasts and luxury car enthusiasts. However, now we're in 2020, those cars are on the lots and cart manufacturers and dealers are thinking of sales that are going on and Toyota or link and or whoever want to get people into dealerships, test tracking. So now they want to start thinking about I want to look at the purchase based data you have that may indicate length of time of ownership or I want to look at the intent data that you have that where people have gone and configured and searched for cars so I can actually start driving people to a dealership to schedule the test drive. So it really depends on what your marketing strategy is at the time. Because we hear about how data aggregators and data resources think about how they're collecting data. You have to map that against what your marketing strategy is are. If you're trying to build awareness, the data aggregators are looking for people that have shown an interest in specific categories. If you think about somebody that is in the buying flow and you're doing more direct response advertising, you're going to go for a different bucket, somebody that's actually had the baby already. And has gone to the parenting sites for the last 40 weeks, something along those lines. So mapping not only what data is being collected, but also to what you're trying to accomplish with your marketing strategies is really the secret sauce here. And I have a good example of an agency that also thinks in terms of they have a couple of large brands that they think in terms of what are the sporting events that our brands spend a lot of money to advertise and sponsor and how do I even target audiences that are going to those sporting events to align with the sponsorships they will have with those events. Again, in terms of building brand awareness, not necessarily driving people into conversion funnel, but just keeping continuity and message across the places that there are already spending money. That's where the Lincoln aviator marketing team decides, hey, we need to get Matthew McConaughey to run Lincoln aviator ads on college football programming. Damn it, they got me. Exactly. All right, Howard. I appreciate you coming on the show and walking us through not only the data collection process, but also understanding some of the different ways that marketers can think about the usage of data and how it can help them build their road map. "But if, but if the initiative includes the language, except for voter proof fees that would at the very even if the thing was upheld. That would mean you could still vote for fees over and above the $30 Yeah, but some of these remember I 9 76 covers a lot of ground, So there's I think one of the ones that kind of falls under. That is the $60 transportation benefit district fee in Seattle, which voters approved and pays for bus service. They're so that's there is much more than just having to do with any of your you know your sound transit in your embed and you're all of that, And there's a few different things that this falls under One of the other big arguments is that the ballots title isn't clear about all of the things that it includes. There's there's ferry taxes and fees and that there's a snowmobile registration taxes and fees in this that falling in that, so the argument is that voters didn't understand that right? Well, I guess would be that painful is would be a ferry service workers. Top and if buses were just to be sitting in the garage all day, because there's no money, people would probably vote to restore that. And so then what? We propose another initiative to take it back again. I don't know what we keep going through the same cycle is if the money was just being burned. It's used for stuff, isn't it? It's used for stuff, but in a lot of stuff, and this is again The basics here is that a lot of people were frustrated about the really high car tabs They got. When s Tree three was past what they voted for those fees. That's why the car tabs went up. Right and village. Then there's the whole argument that not all of those voters understood how much those would go up because of the way that was worded. But that lawsuit went to the same state Supreme Court and in law, so that already I thought one of the angriest was the way the cars were valued. Was the valuation scheduled. You were paying taxes on Ah, basically a fictitious value for your car. Right. It was an inflated value because it's old, and it goes into statue. And then it goes off after the bonds are paid off, and and all of that, so that's why you have in this in the initiative. It says. We need to use Kelley Blue Book would wish, which would presumably keep those cards. You know the valuation down some so your taxes would go down. But now there's the question of having Kelly Blue book in there. Because it's a proprietary information. So one of the things that Justice is asked in this court hearing was, couldn't it just be the same as we've seen a proposed at the state Legislature evaluation similar Kelley Blue Book, But I can tell you have uncovered this for a very long time. That that's similar to Kelley Blue Book doesn't necessarily value the vehicle where where the opponents wanted to be. Is it conceivable that the Supreme Court could keep that part of the new valuation schedule? However, it's described And and let the other taxes stand since it's the valuation that seems to really take people off and the rest they voted for. Yes, I think anything is possible from the state Supreme Court here. They could kind of part some of this out. I think that's definitely a possibility. One of the other big arguments here too, is that you mentioned. You know the big thing that drove. This was SD three, and they overinflated cartel values, And that's huge. It's sound related. This was about people all over the state voting. It was a statewide initiative that let Everyone in the state vote on whether or not those of us in Puget Sound should have to pay those car tab. So there's an argument there it breaks. We've seen that the big takeaway for our listeners here is With those part, we should expect a decision here from the Supreme Court. As you heard, Attorney General Ferguson say, hopefully sometime very soon, not months, perhaps weeks, and this could be resolved. Finally, at least with this initiative, if they I will say this if they set the precedent of saying that, Essentially, the rest of the state can kill a Puget Sound project than that creates a president for Puget Sound to kill a project that would For the whole state to kill a project that would, for example, service Spokane and since we have the most votes than heck, you know, we could do that, right? Yeah, and I said dangerous president. The other really think big thing to take away from this is that sound transit is not a part of this legal challenge. They've just gone on and then their businesses normal. This initiative calls for them. For a variety of changes as it real results released Tost three. Should they sew this? Be up help. Should I 9 76 take effect. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that you'll see another legal channels separately from sound. France it, Hannah Scott. Thank you, Hannah. That takes us to nine. No, that's the wrong clock. That takes us to 8 14 This is the morning News, Ross with Colin O'Brien and Chris Sullivan. One of the keys to keeping the Corona virus under control is contact tracing and Kim Steel. Peter is public health branch director for Pierce County. So you supervise the contact tracing program. Tell me how this works. We have approximately 32 people, and it's like a beehive. There are people buzzing around. They're calling people who have tested positive for cove in 19. You know, one of the first things that they're going to ask someone who has tested positive is how are you feeling? Are you don't you know what can we help you with? And they're going to explain why they're asking these questions. In addition to people who are doing the contact tracing the calling. We have leads Who were there answering questions and each case each person Is handled as an individual. I want people to know that if they receive a call from us, your particular case is handled. Just the way it should be for you. It's your unique individual and it's going to. They're going to figure out what needs you have what means your family has and and handle it That way. So this is not a robotics script. They try to get to know you. But but at some point they have to ask you Okay. Who have you been within six feet of unmasked, Right? Absolutely. And so how does how does that part of the conversation go? So it could be that okay, So you know, Dave, what I need to know is who have you been around? You know, since you've had symptoms, and two days before your symptoms started. Who have you been around family members. So you want their names and their phone numbers? Yeah, way really try to get that information again, and I know that there are people who are concerned. About contact because I would say Okay, what? So when you call them, are you going to say that? Well, Dave told us that he was near you. And because of what he told us. You're going to have to be quarantined day. Your secret is safe with us right now. And I really I truly mean that we do not give out the name of the person we would not give out your name. When we were talking with your close contacts, and we do everything possible to not even allude to who it might be so right? We're going to go through all of that and and talk to them about What it means to be a close contact. And maybe why they were identified as a close contact. Now what if somebody okay? You don't give my name away, but you're gonna want that person to in some way quarantine right? That is what has recommended absolutely, for people who have been exposed right? The terms is quarantine, and as for 14 days since they were last around somebody who was infected and if somebody says and if somebody says I can't afford to quarantine I would lose my job. I can't do that. Then what do you tell if we have that happen? We have happened all the time. We have a system set up in place where Let's just focus on the first time that we're speaking with somebody there saying, I can't do that. I have a job to go to Well, what we're going to do is let them know that their resource is available. We have a whole slew of resources that are either a place where somebody khun stay if they needed quarantine away from other family members, there is assistance with pain bills. We know we're making a big ask for people to stay out of work to stay out of other facilities like grocery stores, and so we have a system in place..

"All right. The Bobby bones post show pre show. Let's go over to Amy's pile which we did not get to the show. Today is an important segment. We kinda got onto Morgan feeling surge on the show today, but we had address fact that she felt like she was going to dog piled or she would say, interrogated, never thought that was really the feeling the lights come off the hang the one light over your head. Oh, man, good cop, bad cop. Ask all sorts of questions. Yeah. Yeah. So you can hear that later. But again, I don't spoil things. You know what I mean? Yeah. Still listen, really listen to see over taming. It really is so much more than that. There's way more to worse than no spoiled. Amy's pile of stories. Have y'all seen sandlot? Prequel is in the works. Yeah, it's pretty cool and they don't really know exactly when it's going to take place like how far before the actual Sanli, but some are suing that the beast will be a puppy. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I wonder what because that's shun nothing. Sixties, Babe, Ruth was there. So maybe earlier than that. But was I thought that was just an old ball because I remember them. Maybe you don't even know if some of the original characters. Yeah, we'll even be born. Oh, pretty frequent. Yeah. But the bidding, the beast is not part of this. He can't be. Bobby, maybe the bee's parent. I liked Salem, movies. Yeah, I thought you would like that. So prince Harry's old Audi is for sale on auto trader. Outy. On his Audi does the car. It's the car that prints hair used to drive Megan Markle to Pippa Middleton's wedding reception last year, and it's ninety four thousand dollars. Okay, so people are putting toothpastes on their Google and hopes to make them bigger. Have you seen this whole thing on YouTube? Does that work for me because I mean, it could work for, I guess, males or females, but women wear. Talking to women's swear that putting based on their boobs made them grow and they've been making videos about it. So other women are falling for it. So. No, I saw an article Marie-Claire where Dr was like, look, I cringe at the prospect of putting toothpastes like on anything on your body is identity mouth because some people use it as acne, cream, which I have done before. When I've been in a pinch. As we almost squirting. Oh. I can't believe I have to say this or not. If you believed it when you said people put into their boobs to make it rows like, oh, wow, yeah, I don't know why people think that that would make your boobs. What you do, all kinds of crazy stuff that I wouldn't fall for putting toothpastes. Maybe it would maybe maybe. Thing. Okay. But that's my file. All right, there you have it. Thank you. That was Amy's pile of stores wrapping up here on Thursday in talk about. Well, sort of we didn't address it, but we can address it later. There's two things on my brain one most recently, because during the show you said that there's been times you've gotten her feelings hurt this week, you know about you. But I mean, just anybody. I'm just point was that I tend to react and get into a turtle shell and is back away completely from this scenario at all. And I'm just like, all right, don't like that. So I'm just gonna run away. I know, but I'm going to adult crazy camp. Even just crazy. Crazy man. Right. Well, it's not a good night at camp. It's not. No, it's it's, you go and you give all your phone, your computer and no TV, and you stay there can be harder days. It's intense. Yeah..
