"Stop the state's long-term care program from happening has failed at least for now I'm Kelly Blair and that's a focus of this northwest news radio extra The U.S. district court for the western district of Washington tossed out the class action lawsuit filed against the law cares fund They claimed the program violated federal law but the court disagreed Ben Beck did the director of the wa cares fund applauds the decision The court vindicated the state's position that this program while the walk here is fund is not preempted by federal law This program was enacted by our legislature to protect washingtonians against the consequences of needing long-term care and not being able to pay for it 7 out of ten Americans will need long-term care but it's very expensive in many can't afford it This program will offer contributors up to $36,000 towards such things as in home or dementia care It is funded through a mandatory payroll tax which will start in July of 2023 For most workers the tax will be around $25 a month The class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of three businesses and 6 people in federal court They may challenge the fund in state court but want to see what changes the legislature makes to the program This last session state lawmakers made more tweaks to allow more people to opt out Ben Victor compares the program to paid family leave offered in ten states including Washington Pedley was a very similar program where workers pay in and then receive a benefit It's a public insurance program If paid leave is legal then programs like walk care should be legal as well Washington is a trailblazer when it comes to state long-term care programs and vector hopes many follow suit We're going to be the first state in the country where people are protected against the risk of long-term care driving them into poverty It's a tremendous problem today And going forward washingtonians will be protected from that Kelly blier northwest news radio.

Seattle police bust felon in stolen car with handgun, stun guns, 150 car keys
"The police arresting a man found in a stolen car this morning, But Como's Kelly Blair reports, they found evidence that that car might not be the only one officer spotted two people sitting in a stolen car in north Seattle near North Acres Park on third Avenue Northeast.
