"I i think we're going to be challenged in some places And but i. I mean it's a. It's a broader challenge for the metro boston region. I don't i don't see any. I don't see any place where the t you know. The t would unilaterally say some piece of the system would be non-viable. Now i focus on that and the pause right the long pause after the question. Not as a gotcha moment but in this larger sense of how challenging this is Whether or not our institutions have the vision. We need right now on our ready and whether or not we can collaborate effectively regionally on these big systems issues. I invite your reactions jennifer. Well i do think mike was right that we we've been having these conversations for a long time. We we need to plan and we need to prepare for it in a way that. Perhaps we didn't prepare for this pandemic And ignore what's interesting is that. There's bipartisan support for this. There's bipartisan support for infrastructure renewal and for environmental mitigation policies And so you know. Our leaders need to need to take that challenge and and they need to work with this. Bipartisan consensus and really. It's it's a question of resources. It's not a question of political will because i do think there's support across party lines of us and michael kara onto our next subject. Do we have time for that. Were i think we do. I really want this to be something for them. That is fine and enjoyable and where they too have a history of this. "Need to plan um and we need to prepare for it in a way that perhaps we didn't prepare for this pandemic. Um, and you know what's interesting is that there's there's bipartisan support for this. There's bipartisan support for Infrastructure renewal and for environmental mitigation policies. Um and so, you know, our leaders need to need to take that challenge and they need to work with this bipartisan consensus and and really it's it's. It's a question of resources. It's not a question of political will, because I do think there's support across party lines for this. And Michael Curry before we go on to our next subject. Do we have time for that work? Yeah, I think we do. I'm going to channel my very good friend, Former general manager of the the T here, Beverly Scott. When you I would say she would say You bet your patootie. We're in for some trouble if we don't plan for it. And those will appreciate that if they remember Beverly Scott. Um, and the reality is we've seen floods in our train systems when there have been, um uh, storms, weather conditions. We know that our system is I believe the oldest in the country. Uh and we need those kind of investments. We can't do it alone. We require federal dollars to help us get there. That's why I think Mayor Janey former Mayor Walsh now Secretary Walsh need to be in the room advocating for these resources from Massachusetts, along with our congressional delegation. To make sure that the inevitability we can blunt the impact of of what is likely to happen with rising sea levels and storms that may cost lives or ruin this city's infrastructure. And just to your point, Boston subway was the first in the U. S. America's first subway, and there's a lot more. We're going to have to follow on this. We could keep talking about this, but there is one more subject I want to get in. Together again. Sort of this at the intersection of the moment we're in, and, um, the policy steps we're taking and how those things match up. And that is the observance of Juneteenth Yesterday, President Biden. Signed it as a federal holiday over the next couple of days, depending on which municipality and here in the Commonwealth for the first time we are observing Juneteenth. We had a really thoughtful conversation with Professor Kelly Carter Jackson and Reverend Mariama White Hammond about the celebration of Juneteenth yesterday. Let's just open up this part of the conversation by listening to a little from Kelley Carter Jackson, who is an associate professor of Africana studies at Wellesley, and how she hopes people who may be celebrating Juneteenth for the first time We'll do it. I really want this to be something for them. That is a fun and enjoyable and where they They, too, have a history of this. They acknowledge this as part of their history, But they also see the the wonderful ways that we can celebrate what it means to be black in this country and how even though racism is terrible, Blackness is not and listeners Are you celebrating Juneteenth, either for your first time or for the many inthe time is your community doing it? What are those celebrations look like and how to stand at an intersection of joy and pain. In this observance. 1 804 to 38255 is the number 1 804 to 3 talk. So Michael Jennifer, just rapid fire. Are your communities observing Juneteenth an official ways. Michael. Yeah, absolutely. We've been calling for this for many years. The reality is if you're American, and you've been celebrating 17 76 is Independence Day, millions of Africans were not independent. Millions of African Americans were not independent. Uh and and free And quite frankly, it's been a misrepresentation. So maybe it should be 17 76 18 63 or 18, 65 or 1963 or 1964. Right? We we can challenge history. I think ended on this. My one of my favorite proverb. These hunters will cease being heroes. When lions have historians, hunters will cease being heroes when lions have the story that I'm thankful that we now have historians for lions to tell the truth about American history. Jennifer. How is it? How important is it that the Commonwealth mark this day? I think it's super important, and I think it's a great compliment to the Fourth of July observance. I disagree with Michael, that 17 76 isn't our constant countries, True birthday or a true celebration of freedom. It absolutely is a celebration of of political freedom and have enlightenment principles that had never before been For White Americans know they the celebration of enlightenment principles that had never before been observed in the form of a government. And and it was. It was an aspirational document. The Declaration of Independence one. We're still striving to live up to today. Um I, You know, I I love the Fourth of July. I and I love the idea of Juneteenth, too. I want my kids to learn more about it. It's important part of our history. One thing I think is interesting about it. Um, is You know, unlike holidays that celebrate individual people holiday that celebrates an aspect of our shared history. Um, I think is a little less fraught because when you celebrate individual Look, I'm all for celebrating Columbus Day in Washington's birthday and Martin Luther King Day. But when you celebrate a human being human, all human beings are flawed. All human beings are imperfect. And you open yourself up to, um, applying the standards of today to the time in which the individual lived. And so some people will criticize, criticize the person and then therefore criticized the holiday. But why do you celebrate the Fourth of July when you celebrate Juneteenth? You're celebrating a moment in time. You're celebrating progress towards where we are. Now You're celebrating how far we've come. And so I think it's a It's almost a better way. For a nation to celebrate. Now that you know that said, we need heroes. We do but the celebration of an event something that I think is is truly special. And just to Jennifer, make sure we're green and I because I was saying that it's not just 17 76. It could also be 18 63 with the Emancipation Proclamation 18 65 And Gordon Granger announced in Texas that those slave those former slaves, they still thought they were slaves were free. So I think we can go back and recalibrate our history to understand that there's more than one Independence day. And particularly for those millions of African Americans, those four million African people people of African descent who were liberated because of the end of slavery. That was different milestones. And when is the birth of a nation and one is the celebration of of emancipation for for, you know for many people, and they're both worth celebrating. So just a couple things first. Listeners just call in. Add your thoughts to this 1 804 to 38255. That's 104 to 3 talk. We're going to talk about this for a few more minutes. If you want to share your thoughts call, I want to play a moment. Listen, A. We do best on this show when I have the two of you when I let you talk to each other. That's when I learned the most. But I do want to play something. I learned something that changed how I was thinking from a caller from yesterday. This is Jack from Wall Fam, and he's talking about how he thinks about that moment of announcement in Texas in 18 65. And I think what is important as far as to take our minds back to that date in 18 65. And I would surmise that the majority of slaves knew they were free. But the slave masters had not acknowledged that they had tried to keep it from us. And I would think of it as a time when actually the Emancipation Proclamation began to be enforced and acknowledged in Texas, the Majority of slaves knew they were free, but the masses wouldn't let him go. So I'm going to go to Michael first, but I want to make a point to each of you out of that, and then I'll go to Michael. Michael. My point to you. That was yet another reframing of the moment and one that has not been in the dominant narrative that I've been learning as I've been learning about Juneteenth and Jennifer. I think then it sets and relief. The question about whether it's celebrating progress or Or acknowledging that progress had to be forced. Those were the two things that the call made me think about. So, Michael, let me invite you to react first. Yeah, I mean, there's so much context for this, and I hope people embrace this holiday and credit to the Biden administration that we finally reached the point. And I think the advocate because, quite frankly, whether it's been hate here in Boston, who Was a proponent of June teen or the many advocates across the country, particularly those in Texas that we acknowledge that 2.5 years after emancipation Proclamation of those black folks in Texas found out they were free. I want people to understand in this moment of self reflection of historical reflection that they still weren't free after 18 65 because you had black codes they couldn't take advantage of the Homestead Act in the Southern Homestead Act, which repositioned Americans. Similarly White America At home, the black codes and Jim Crow would lock those former slaves out of opportunities for at least generations to come..

"Sure and it and it's a good question. I think situations even worse than it looks with regard to this issue and that is that it was up to mcconnell win win to start this trial and he purposely withheld action stopped action on trial until until basically trump had left office and then he and then having you know turned it that way he has a convenient excuse he invented this technicality That wants wants to present. 'cause you can't you can't go after him so this was all contrived and a very in a very serious way. I i wanna make one other point. If i might about the about what happens to trump as we go forward. I think it's really important for the country. Whatever happened we not do it with you know trying to do everything we can to clap this guy into jail what we need our fair proceedings. We don't need aggressive overly aggressive law. His people deserve to walk out of this if we ever want peace with his base to if it looks like he's been hustled into jail on some some phony charges. I think that's gonna be highly destructive. You know i. We really need a chance to move on in this country. I do want to say one last thing if i might Tizzy on and that is not the this whole episode on india salt so exposed a policy of donald trump into fiendish nature of donald trump. You know he. He spent his last three or four years. Telling you i see a law and order president and he loves the cops. They think they do wonderful things yet. When it served his interest to cling to power. What did he do. He said this assault up to beat up on the cops to the savage them to kill some of them. They lost right guy lost. His is a guy you know. One guy had a heart attack. People died from all of this and he was taking pleasure in watching from the white house. That is seen dish so we do not have time to go to the phones. One more time. But i was marked are struck by a call from shayna in cambridge. Who wanted to know if this is what it looks like to have a minority rule country which is provocative looking forward. Kelly carter jackson in a few sentences. Your reaction to shane question I'm not exactly sure if we have experienced a minority rule. But i can say that. I'm encouraged to see someone like kamala harris. I'm encouraged to see more and more women and in particular women of color take a political spaces. I mean encouraged to see georgia and there two democratic defenders of african american descent and jewish american descent. I'm excited to see a country. That is so much more inclusive. Ed political level that excites me. Now whether we can sustain this whether it becomes The pattern going forward or the routine of the status quo going forward. I think remains to be seen. But we're at the cusp of something different. And that's really exciting. All right david gergen back to you last. You know thirty forty five seconds or so. Do you share a sense of hope. By i heard real hope from kelley carter jackson there. I heard inspiration. I i think we have a new administration. That is pledged. diversity is it is pledged to equal opportunity. I think they're quite sincere about it The appointments have reflect that diversity. We've never seen as many people of color as many women in powerful positions as we do today and he's very low key about there's humility and decency. We've talked about here on your show before too. So all of that gives me hope. I tell you what else gives me up. I've talked to some..

"93.9 FM Am 20 or Ask Your Smart Speaker to play W N. Y. C. This's all of it. I'm Alison Stewart. Kelley Carter from the undefeated is my guess We're talking about the primetime Emmys, which are coming up on the Sunday night. What's about Rami, which which one a Peabody Award? Yeah, I mean, it's it's a really good show. It's a it's A It's not a comedy. Sandra's hates a drama D, but it is kind of a drama D about this guy growing up in New Jersey and navigating the world is young, single Muslim American with immigrant parents. What is it you think makes this show unique. Well, first off. We've never seen a Muslim of American family represented like this before in television and quite often when we do see Muslim people that are there Muslim or people of Middle Eastern descent. On television or in film. They are betraying terrorist. So this is such an important piece of representation for so many families, not just brown families, not just Not just Muslim American families, but other other communities can see their story's played out in this and it really is just getting at this very universal truth of what it's like to be a first Gen. And I think people really loved this show for what it's doing in that regard intended to go. Oh, good. Yeah. Good. In Season two on Rami Oscar winner Mahershala Ali Place a religious leader who's trying to guide Rommie because in the season stars Rommie has this case of ennui. So that's sort of the plot point. Let's listen to a little bit of the show of Rommie and Marshall. This is Season two finale, actually, where rehearse with characters chic is confronting Rami about his destructive behavior. You'll hear Romney use it first. I don't know. I don't like this, OK? I don't And that's why I need you. I need you to help me. That's why you're my shave. It's all about you and your pressure, self improvement. The rest of the world exists so that you could reflect on it and perfect yourself. Is that it? No. I don't think that Since you took me for a reason. It has to be a reason. Yes. Also, let's figure out that reason right way We'll get to the bottom of it. We could just kind of like Bye. You know, prayed out talking out. Um Like, uh, You know, like I feel we'll feel it like we'll just How's the reason? I think if we just we'll just be like Dad. Uvula sent you To see if I was given to my nephew. I would revert back to my always I don't know your old ways were, but I don't think you should revert to then I really think where you're at is beautiful. And I think that we're just like we're testing each other. Maybe through Allah. But we don't know because we don't know all those wells that you know the will of the profit, right? Okay. So in the shallow end of the pool, Vanity Fair, dubbed for sure, Marshall is always character. The hot chic callback to flea bags. The hot priest on the deeper end of the pool. What does this fine Oscar winning actor bring to this? This show? And he's been nominated for best supporting actor. Yeah, just bring so much depth and layer, you know, just when you thought that the first season of Romney was bringing something that we hadn't seen before the second season comes and adds another layer on that entire experience by bringing in this very black American experience, melding it with this, and so you see these You know, two cultures coming together but have the shared believed and and and marshall adjust, really crystallizes the storyline and in a way that I found to be so Captivating and from being honest with you everything that marshal it does and he's up for he wins. I just I just don't see him. Walking out of Sunday night without a win for for this particular role. I think that also is a foregone conclusion. So, so good. So good. I can't hope to win because the speeches are always so elegant and thoughtful, Tio. I would like to hear his acceptance speeches. Eso what's a comedy for a minute? And when we When we talked about having on the show, you said, you had some thoughts about insecure. Which, in addition to best comedy has been nominated age categories. Yeah, you know, I think all of those that secure nominations are so important because it's really getting the love from this industry that is, should be getting, you know, it's a really funny show it appeals to A generation of young women and young men who love seemed themselves and their entanglements. You know, play out on the HBO series in a very realistic way, people. Why argue over these characters and their decisions as if they are real people in their lives, which to me is indicative, you know of of ah of a series that really kind of penetrates. American life and in this case in a way that we don't normally get to see young black people on screen, and so I really enjoy the Siri's. And I think that God, this is that you'll win for them to get this level of nomination, especially going into this season. I'm so excited. For the best drama category. That's the first year game of Thrones is out of the picture. Throwing won best drama four out of the past five years, And now that it's over who are real contenders in this category? Tio. I think HBO is gonna maintain their crowns. The succession You know, this is This is yet another really great, layered, complex story of a family patriarchy, and it feels like we're getting almost an inside. Look, Tio, perhaps some some famous American families anyway, and how and how what happens behind the headlines and I think people really gravitate. Of the story because of that, But also they gravitate because the story tell you his excellence and the acting that is chefs kiss. I mean, it's just some really good stuff that comes out of this series, and I think they easily kind of walk away with the wind on Sunday night. That's such an interesting one because the first Siri the first year Some people like there was a little bit of buzz. And then it just blew up the second year. Yeah, yeah, And, you know, I think this also is a show that that is going to be benefiting from people being at home or be able to do this quarantine marathons because people who were not into secession even even in that last season. Have now found it and are obsessed and are waiting, you know for for this production, so to go back and to give us more more more seasons, and more of this kind of rich deep Family drama. But, yeah, you know, I feel kind of does that, though, that they had a couple of serious like that that builds slowly and then suddenly has an exploding audience and succession is definitely in that category and again. It's almost like it's a master class of acting. Every week that it's on. You just see some really great work at guys like Brian Cox, and I just I just I just think it's gonna be a big night for them on Sunday. Yeah, HBO had 107 nominations. Netflix broke the record with 160 our last minute. Any predictions any of you think of a surefire winds? I mean, watchman and shit Street are going to be the Kings and queens of off the night. I mean, they're easily gonna capture most of the winds on Sunday night. Eugene Levy..

"Corsi Jesse small hoax and the Andrew McCabe hoax. Have one thing in common. A narrative that Trump's America is a mess. It's racist. It's wrong. It's corrupt and it has to be stopped. Welcome back to the Mark Levin show. Good news. The great ones back with you tomorrow night. Rich Z only the honor to sit in for Mark Mark is the reason I got into radio and also, by the way, the reason that when all this nonsense goes on I tune in like, you do which is why I say, I'm fellow venite. And Mark was all over this whole thing with with the president and the wire-tapping very long ago back when they all made fun of him and called him, a Kook and a right-wing nutjob and everything else, he endured all that. And now, we know it's all true. And you may have endured the same thing if you doubted the jussie smollet story Jesse smollet again, the actor from the show empire, which I don't know you. But I I don't I don't watch it. I don't really watch TV. I have a four year old and a two year old. So we watch a lot of things that are cartoons PJ masks and things like that. But when my wife, and I are actually not watching TV. We're actually hanging out together. We're we're rarely watching TV because we just retired reworked. And then the kids and everything I'm not turning on empire. But I had no idea who the guy was I know a lot of people who go on Twitter, and they trash Trump they obviously. But I had no idea. He was one of them would have known that. And that's my job to got to know that stuff. I mean here on a talk show host in Philadelphia by really I'm on Twitter a lot at rich Z only, I know when people are actively out there, and they come at me, sometimes trolls, come at me. I didn't know that jussie smollet was one of those people till this quote, unquote, attack happened, and then look back and said, oh, look, look, look, he's a rabid anti Trumper. And he says that's why the attack happened. But one of the questions that should have been asked of him was are you? So sure that people know you're really this big anti Trump guy on Twitter. That question was not asked either by Robin Roberts shit wasn't asked. Because again, one of a believe he's right. There's a long pattern of this. By the way, I have a whole stack here stuff. Let's see here. Now. Lawyer racist. No, giving you black waitress in Virginia is a fake. I was from Loudon county Virginia Kelley Carter who was a waitress at anita's New Mexico cafe in Ashburn Virginia claim that white man stiffer on a thirty dollar and fifty percent restaurant. Bill and wrote great service. Don't tip black people the bottom of the receipt. But the note was forged says a lawyer for the customer. He's he's fine. Did leave the waitress a small tip one penny because their service was poor. Not because she's black. Our client did not nor would he ever write anything about refusing to tip African Americans because of their race Cording to WTO p. This from the college fix December two thousand eighteen another hoax black student targets himself and others with racist. Graffiti, there's been yet another incident of race hoax madness time involving a black student at Maryland's gouge your college fin a, Johnny. Arthur a member of the schools lacrosse teams charge on Thursday with two counts of malicious destruction of property after investigators determined he was responsible for dormitory swastika graffiti, which targeted specific individuals, including himself. Just the other day officials at Drake university in Iowa determined racist notes targeting students in dorms were hoaxes, according to the Daily Mail Arthur's scribblings depicted, swastikas, the letters K K K and appeared to include the last names of four black students himself being one of the students. He was released on his own recognizance, but has been banned from the campus. Of course, now when this happened, you can imagine a number of people came out and said things like these acts of hatred have consumed our community, and we feel strongly that these must stop and everybody right away. Russia's to jump with bike with three waitress story a rushed to come out and condemn this right away. This is hatred. This is inexcusable this must stop postings on Facebook. And everybody comments, and they blame the president for this. I blame the president. It's amazing to me. It's always amazing how they do that boy claims prank for black doll found hanging from Nusa Queen village Philadelphia playground. The fewer that erupted Thursday when a black doll was found hanging from a wire with a noose around its neck in Queen village. It's a part of Philadelphia quiet later in the day when two preteen boys one black and one white came forward and said they had put the dollar as prank there was nothing racial about their act. They said the Reverend Mark Kelly. Tyler pastor of mother Beth. Ame church set an interview Thursday night that the boys admitted the accurate NBC ten reporter, Rosemary Connors and said they felt the Dow was creepy and put it up to scare people. Said he spoke by phone with mayor Jim Kenney and police Commissioner Richard Ross about the new information and said, I think everybody is satisfied. Of course, that didn't stop mayor Kenney from coming out and tweeting before he had all the facts together. Schick into by what took place today at the playground. This despicable act shows how far this country has fallen when people are inspired by hateful rhetoric. We'll do everything we can to bring those responsible to Justice. Earlier in the day. The police Commissioner had said this absolutely hate crime director of human resources, a Philadelphia said this was a heinous crime targeting the African American community. This is what happens. Oh, people rush to judgement, and they say, it's a hate crime. And it's a larger sign of America. Instead of just saying this is a hate crime. And we gotta deal with it, which by the way, it's not. But let's just assume they did that say they kept it on the micro level for a moment. This is a hate crime. It's intolerable for our community instead because Trump's president they say this is hey crime. And this is America today. And this is why this is sickening of this has to stop. And this goes all the way up to Donald Trump, and it turns out to be a fraud. They don't apologize to the president. They don't apologize to the mega hat wearing crowd. They just in fact now with Jesse small it the actor from empire who claims that he was called these names beat up bleach turn his face and use around his neck. He's now a victim because how mentally deranged must be to do this kind of pressure. That's put on people in Trump's American that makes them do this. So he's actually still a victim. You see, I guess if you believe that racist note at Kansas state university turns out to be hoax. College fixed staff November of two thousand eighteen. And there's another headline here. Another hate crime. At the university of Maryland. It turns out to be a hoax from reason dot com. We wear of easy narratives about bias incidents. We usually don't know who's behind them. And when we find out they often aren't who expect this was racially charged graffiti, including a swastika in the bathroom at the university of Maryland reporters, a hate crime case was solved the perpetrator was Terrell diamante. Alexander an eighteen year old former university employees was black incident was a hoax, or at least an act of intimidation committed by a member of the targeted minority group. It was not an act of of a hate crime. It's the second such deceptive case at the university in the past few months last October police arrested Ronald Alfred a fifty year old black former employees for spray painting a swastika on campus have university of Maryland workplace grievances seemed to be more important motivators at bias and racism. And the waiter who faked a racist received the latest to use shocking claims to get Facebook of this from Fox News Odessa, Texas. The woman had said that the guy wrote we don't tip terrorists at the bottom of the receipt. The Bill check she put it on Facebook. To get some Facebook. Love a lot of this. I think goes to the victim mentality that we live in today. A lot of this really is because you get a lot of attention when you're victim. If you're the victim of something you posted on social media. Look what they wrote on my receipt. You don't have to prove anything. If anybody says you're making it up there immediately them. There are bigot for doubting you, and you get flooded with all kinds of just love, and they boost you up they build you up and say, we'll get through this. This is wrong. And this is Trump it all comes back to Trump. Right. And you don't have to be right. You just have to say it. You don't have to prove a damn thing. Hey crime at Michigan State University was actually just a missing shoelace. Again, reason dot com. Ravi so writing how common are bona fide bias incidents. We don't know. This one was a shoelace. That was a was a noose hung on a doorway turn out to be nothing. More than a misplaced shoelace. And the media keeps saying anti-semitism has spent fifty seven percent under Trump is really misleading. The Anti-Defamation league's report actually show that attacks decreased in two thousand seventeen from twenty sixteen. And again, a lot of this now comes up to the point of a narrative that we are living in this awful awful, awful place. Which is why the jussie small story much like the Covington story, the Covington Catholic kids what happened in DC with Nathan Phillips that narrative, also they ran with it. The media ran with it Trump's America with these kids did to this poor indigenous man, and as as a story all unravels may don't let it ever. They don't learn from any of these things words the media politicians. They don't stop to say, you know, there's been like ten of these that have been hoaxes or just wrong. Why don't we take a deep breath? Instead, they just go all in do they not they go all in this is Cory Booker. My Senator from the great state of New Jersey. I it's really not a great state. I it's it's a very expensive over. It's a police state, basically. Anyway, Corey Booker wants to be president. And Cory Booker loves to grandstand. I call him grants Dangelo. He's just what he does. He's Spartak Cassie grandstands. He's got his own band and right away. When the Jesse small thing happened. He took no time. I mean, literally no time to grandstand. Now that one okay, see, I I should have said the number on that how about J S seven Cory Booker on jussie smollet attack. He opened up about what he's learned. And the bigger message. He wants the world to hear what do you feel people need to hear the most from the story. That's the first time. He's given a detailed account on the wrong one. We'll go. Withhold.
