If you're just joining us, Southwest Airlines, founder herb Kelleher has died at the age of eighty seven. And now we bring in our business analyst, David Johnson. A man who knew herb Kelleher, very well over the years matter-of-fact, some very fascinating conversations that we got to eavesdrop on David hard to believe herb Kelleher is gone. Yeah. They were a lot of good conversations. You didn't hear sue we go back to the late seventies early eighties? Couldn't win the airlines started. And he was still commuting. He was an attorney people forget he was not a while. He was one of the co founders of Southwest Airlines. He was not the first CEO. He was a crackerjack attorney that meet off, you know, American and braniff and Texas international everybody else who wanted want to fly. But I don't I I never thought he was born to management. I mean, he was at attorney. He was the interim CEO after Howard Putnam. I think in nineteen eighty two or maybe eighty one I guess it was probably abruptly quit and went to save braniff, and he came in and ultimately transition for being the interim CEO to the full-time CEO did something is very hard going from what is an essence an individual's occupation. You know, stand on your feet think on your feet, you know, trial attorney. Just somebody that could delegate and Ed connect with only the flying public. But it's thousands of incredibly dedicated employees. He was really quite a remarkable guy. Yeah. Legacy will live on obviously. I mean, some of his quotes he says we have a strategic plan. It's called doing things, you know for him. It always seemed very easy as if it was common sense to treat people very well. And then people would always come back. And that's exactly what happened with Southwest Airlines. Susan, you really generally liked people. I can't say how many times I was with him. And we were if we went to Swannee by on the water for a long by three or four days, and he taught and we add dialogues and stuff like that. We'd be walking across the campus going to a lunch or going to teach a class and somebody would come up to excuse me, Mr. Kelleher, and he would turn and he would make eye contact with that person. And I would literally have to. Drag him away. I'd say we we've got a class. We've got to get the okay, but hang on just a minute. 'cause he was really interested in what they were saying. And he, you know, he completely connected with people really just a remarkable guy at a incredibly well liked guy to in an industry where quite often you were not well liked David. Were there similarities between Mr. Keller her and Robert Crandall from American Airlines. No. You only ended up they they could really run they could really run an airline, and they knew the efficiencies, but they were vastly different people, but very effective equally. What they did. But you know, they were really good friends, and and at to a degree degree after after Crandall left America's, but they they really got along. Well, and they had that common bond. But I it was just different completely different styles. What I'm hoping we can find in the last time. I was with her. Every time you saw Herbie. I'd say you're still working on the book. Yeah. Working on it. 'cause a lot of people had written books about him and about southwest, but he'd never book, and he had he told me he had finished. It was just polishing it up. And I guess we're going to find out if it was the truth about when it comes out, but we're really gonna miss him. We were so much better off for somebody.
