Rolling Stones Drop ‘Scarlet,’ Previously Unreleased 1974 Track Featuring Jimmy Page (Listen)
"The Stones rolled out details their upcoming goat's head soup box set earlier this past month, But the most exciting elements for their fans was a previously unreleased song. According with Jimmy Page that you're listening to year called Scarlet sets not coming out to a September the fourth. But this week, the band released the highly anticipated track. Song was cut in October in 1974 with Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, both handling guitar duties and traffics Rick Gretch on the base. Pete says. My recollection is that we walked in at the end of a Zeppelin session. They were just leaving and we were booked in next and I believe that Jimi decided to stay. We weren't actually cutting. It is a track was basically just a demo was to get the feel of it, but it came out well over the line up like that. You know, we better be using it. 1975 page told Rolling Stone that Rolling Stone magazine that he thought the track was supposed to be a B side of a stones record. It sounded very similar style and mood to those blonde on blonde tracks. Jimmy said. He was great. Really good. We stayed up all night when down Island Studios where Keith put some reggae guitars over one section. I just put some solos on it. It was eight in the morning and next day before he was able to do that. I remember first, jamming this song with Jimmy and Keith in Ronnie's basement student, Jang said his great session. A new edition of Goat's head soup also features previously unreleased tracks Criss cross and all the rage along with the rare demos and a complete concert, taped at a gig in Belgium in 1973. Stones originally planned on touring American football Stadium this year, But certainly that gonna happen this year anyway. During the down time, they've released a new song called Living in a Ghost Town. The first original songs. He's 2012. So the stones are at it. Interesting, Jimmy Page story. Never heard this one before. No, I like the song though. It's very Yeah, I kind of did, too. Yes, I didn't know if I love seeing old documentaries. We've been watching a lot of stuff about Laurel Canyon and like Ringo was actually really good friends with Mickey Dolenz, the drummer for the Monkeys, which was always a joke that the monkeys were created to be like the American beetles. And so it's it's I like seeing who was actually friends with whom and to see that I never knew Jimmy Page in the Stones ever had any crossover and the fact that he played on the song is really cool. Jimmy Page lives in a house across the street from Murray Gellar's old house in Sonny. And apparently, he's quite noisy in the neighbourhood,

"He's the SAX player on poor. Poor pitiful me and Mohammad's radio On that Firs Yvonne. Record saying you know keeps coming around Z. Von But that's just the tip of the iceberg. The stuff that we're talking about so far you know we. We talked about it. He was on all things must pass it to rape records with Ringo heated. All kinds of things that you might not necessarily think of him being involved in like working with Dr John and Eric Clapton Right He was on face his record. We mentioned the sessions with Nielsen. That ended up being Tutina snore. Work with Joe Alien. John Hi Keith. Moon Solo stuff though totally. Sheryl Crowe Yoko Ono I can only imagine what working with iota would be like but then again you hear him on the Let's get it on album Marvin Gaye. Any loved the work. You Do Delaney and Bonnie and friends too. So it's such a wide variety and that's the kind of player that he was like you said earlier he could bring his trademark sound to the Party and then make it work to what your music is. Which is what a great player. Does Lake. He did so he did lose. He did everything he could as thing everything was in his realm of possibilities and he was just one of those players. One of those guys. I guess who was so wild and insane but so uber creative and so talented. I can only imagine his ear. His special especially is to be able to play like that well. Keith may still be around but we lost bobby. He was a rock and roll treasure INFO. It's where his standing is in. The Pantheon of Seidman will use the masculine there. But you know what I mean to lose him for you know for Keith. Had to be like lers in twin you know they. They were joined at the hips in the same way about a lot of things the way music and culture and life experiences by people who were born in the same period of time often lead to a commonality that it's hard to describe sometimes and I believe that's what those fellas had especial commonality. Let's just call. They're definitely keeping a now. Bobby definitely had some sort of connection and while we were talking about this I can only imagine during that time that Bobby was not allowed back in the band. Keith can we bring bobby back into the ban? Make no and overcharge chat leg and I bet every two. Can we bring bobby back into the bill make? No that was as far as it ever went Dr Evil Zip it Zip. I bet that's what it was like. But yeah those two seemed to be very connected at the hip or they have that special connection kind of in a different way than Mick and Keith have. There is a connection between Keith and Bobby and we'll find out some more of these birthday twins who are connected as well. I got a question about these. Two Thou okay. I think it's pretty clear that to some degree. Keith had a civilizing effect on Bobby. Even though they were both wild He had kind of a civilizing effect on MD. You think that Bobby had a wilding affect on Keith. By kinda got him go more. I mean not. The Keith Richards. Need any encouragement. But you know what I'm saying. Did He. Inject a little redneck into Keith? Or bring out his into redneck a little bit for the for the fun crazy stuff. I guarantee he brought out the wild boy and Keith. The wild farm boy the wild cowboy in Kia definitely brought out the wild cavalier country. Tom But yeah I would say that they probably in both the calming and in the wilding way were peaceable pod. That's good way to put buddy. Well I'm glad we picked this pairing for our first venture into birthday twins because I think it's really Was a whole lot of fun first and foremost a lot of great music and all that but it kind of sets the Bar Pretty Goddamn high after this for any other bearing the comes along you know other than actual twins We're talking about people who weren't blood relatives. "Some people are calling us the imbalanced brothers. Marcus and I guess that fits what we do here on the podcast. We definitely fit the imbalanced brothers. Monica since we're doing that we've we've kind of cooked up this birthday twins thing in our first one is Keith Richards. And Bobby cues who played with the stones and a million other people. Not a million I exaggerate. But on December eighteenth nineteen forty-three. They were both born. Keith in England and Bobby down in Texas and we thought it'd be fun to do a quick Five favorite rolling stones songs with Bobby Keyes On 'em I did a thorough search of all my favorites in things that I knew and didn't know and thought it'd be fun to do that. What do you think I'm totally down? I've got my five ready to go as well as far as his. My five favorite Bobby Keys Rolling Stones Songs. Why don't you viewers and then I'll do mine? All righty number. Five emotional rescue just loved the song. It's one of my. It's not like it's one of my earliest encounters with the rolling stones as somebody who was aware of music. My number four brown sugar love that song. I know it's a classic but it didn't hit me the same way. Some of the other songs like my number three which is bitch. I absolutely love that song and his work has beautiful number two tumbling dice and number one did you do. Doo Doo heartbreaker. It's probably my all time favorite rolling stones song great stuff man and we got a couple of in the same ballpark. I had emotional rescue my number five. I put bitch at number four rip. This joint was my number three. Can't you hear me knocking that Solo we were talking about in the first half of the PODCAST. At number two. And live with me from legibly. Maybe my favorite rolling stones song ever all time period at my number one bobby keys sex songs on the amounts history of rock and roll. And there's two guys involved. You're talking a lot about bobby but you know If it weren't for Kief you gotta think that Bobby might not ahead the camp the career he had because Keith. In their friendship in his enroll in the stones became integral but when he was free to do other stuff It allowed bobby to develop his his role as a side Man. And a rock and roll. Legend Airs Keith. He starts out the same day bobby does. But he's born over there in Dartford Kent where he would later meet that young Michael Philip Jagger and UH start a chapter rock and roll history that we talk about from time to time but never can mention enough talking about the fantastic rolling stones. "He starts connecting with the stones. Obviously you know when you're the SAX player on a hit like brown sugar. He started with before that actually on the on the lead lead record and he would be the sack guy and he would go on tour with them and that led all these other people being in demand of his services when he wasn't recording with or on the road with the rolling stones which as we know through the years that wasn't always continuous business so he had the opportunity to do a lot of things as a session. Guy That just build his legend to all-time side man status. How can you listen to? Can't you hear me knocking? And not think of the SAX. It's impossible because it intertwines with a. Richardson Taylor they just. We've it altogether right and as we have researched learned over the years the importance of the guitar in the Blues. Sound but then hear somebody like bobby keys laying down his own blues grew with the saxophone. It sorta changes the feel of the blues. Yeah and especially when he has the tone like that like live with me from let it bleed and it's different from. Can't you hear me knocking? It's different than black brown sugar or rip this joint. Some of the bigger songs that his his saxophone trademarks are on. You know it's hard to believe is that you could have this Gig and be doing the rolling stones thing and actually get fired from the rolling stones for excess. And but that's what happened. Yeah Well Aarhus him and him and Keith went through what they did. A lot of crazy shit together and There was a whole thing that went down on the seventy three tour and I got some notes here basically. The story involves bobby being in a bathtub full of Dom perignon with a Frenchwoman in Belgium on the seventy-three tour and when the band got together to go the arena that night there was no sight of them and finally somebody said. Hey where's bobby? And there had been no reply from his hotel room. This is from Keith books. Life is so I went to his room and said Bob we gotta go. We gotta go right now. He's got a cigar bathtub full of champagne in this French chicken with him and he said fuck off so bit great image and everything like that. But you might regret it Bob. The accountant inform bobby afterward. That hit earned no money at all on the tour as a result of that bathtub. In fact he owed money. And that's from. Keith's book about the incident. Bobby tried to dispute the incident in his own autobiography every night. Saturday night And then he was reminded that yes it had been taken from his check and it. Kinda was like a double back on saying. Hey but wait a minute Yeah that's that's what they tell me. It was my paycheck. So I guess it's true is actually the quote From the book so keys it said that he had no regrets about his rock and roll lifestyle in fact. He kind of rebelled in it his book every night's a Saturday night and He said there's one moment he wish you could take back in. It's probably not something that you would think. Marcus House actually expecting him to say that champagne moment in the hotel with the Rolling Stones. But obviously it's not that him and key throwing a TV at the window and somebody got a picture of it and it got out and that kind of became his image. There-i is you know on in the newspaper throw in a TV with Keith Richards. Out THE WINDOW. Bobby keys this this now this is. We're so close and is keyed said in his quote from the book it took him ten years to get him back in the band in the interview. I did with Bobby Many years ago he was first off he was so loose so candid. He gave me the number to his house. He was yelling at the dog to pipe down. Turn let me turn the TV on that kind of stuff. Then it gets it talking about how he got back in the rolling stones through a back door in Long Island. Yeah I got back into the back door a long island coliseum. That's great so you just Kinda Kinda get in there. And then all of a sudden you're on stage. It was all matter of timing. Well you know nobody in that group can deny the power. Bobby keys much bring the stage. Every night I'll tell you what. It has a lot of people bobby keys those anyway. Yeah that's that was. There was a period where it was. Kinda of I would say. Say Nice but Cleveland I was going to be around lose again. Once he got back in. He behaved to the amount that he ever was gone and he had a nice long run with them. And I'm an chest so many amazing records at the guy was on one of the astounding. Things is that Bobby keys was on solo albums by all the Beatles and he talked about that the John Lennon's whether my favorite people to work with it. I've had you know been blessed to work with and I. Well what are we doing? That was Kinda special 'cause I went to New York early and spend some time with. John is a apartment for them because and went through the material that I was putting horns on and he gave me. You know going what he had in mind and I was listening to John. Because he had very good and and he was also Kinda guy I mean he I some people just make you want to play better for them and bring out the best that you too could muster up. When he was one of those guys man you know so it was fun. It was great fun. You know you never felt like you were there performing for a beetle you know you were there just rock and Roll Guy John Lennon. You know who likes Buddy Holly who? I liked you know it was it was a it was ever sort of like well. I'm the king and years. You know Servino Marcus. I looked it up and that's not exactly true because he wasn't on a Paul McCartney album per se but remember that Record I was talking to you about that was recorded during the Harry. Nielson pussycat session the little a- Tutina snort and seventy four EP. Yes bobby was on that. So technically he was on a solo effort he played with George he played with Ringo. He played with John. He did some great work with John. the the trademark solo on. Whatever gets you through the night. What an accomplishment that very few people can say that they've done and Just an amazing guy. The way he he just was so relaxed and talking. And we got to talking about buddy holly in how he met Buddy but the true story was there. Everybody Holly was the first guy ever heard play electric guitar and And I had it. I used to hang out at my aunt's House with my grandmother on weekends and buddy parents lived across the street and he was out in the garage plank. Dr I never played with Buddy. I played one session was never released recorded a radio station in. Lubbock but I never recorded with Buddy. I wish I had. King Curtis recorded buddy so you can imagine how amazed I am there. I am the night yakking. Mg K. Bobby's coming to town. I get a chance to talk to him on the phone and involvement in the Jones for the stone so I started asking him questions. I didn't really had. Because he started talking about stuff about influences and stuff like that and he also told me what kind of mouth. Vp's what Kinda read you. The great guy just so relaxing easy to talk to and stuff starts coming out and he wouldn't say what he couldn't say about what the stones were up to for real at that time but I did ask him about you. Know one of his favorite things with the stones forty six well since nineteen seventy eight forty years. So it'd be hard just mailed out of one or two. I mean the very first went on with the stones. I'll never forget that first time stepping out on the band that was that popular and in the city renders memorable love. The music is recorded back. Then was pretty kid. Turn the machine on and get out of the stadium and let it rock just a little taste of my interview with the man Bobby Keys. One half of this week's birthday twins Keith. Richards and Bobby keys forever. Joined in rock and roll right on the imbalanced history of rock and roll. Hey Ray why? "And welcome to the episode of Imbalance History of rock and roll. I'm recoup marches in. The dark. Is Marcus is a concept that we want to introduce to the podcast. This week. that we've talked about for awhile. It started when I discovered there were people who were born on the same day in the same year there were rock and rollers and then we started putting together a little bit of a list and we kept having those type moments as we found one after another. There are a lot of musicians who share birthdays putting together this list and figuring out who to talk about I. It's been a lot of fun and we've done it over a long period of time. Some of the stories that will cover on birthday twins episodes of the podcast or going to be real mind benders. 'cause there's some of the stories that we discovered along the way some of the interesting facts that we have learned and will continue to learn is how these birthday twins are tied together is the amount history of rock and roll in. This episode is always brought to you by crooked eye brewery and buy one. Cbd FIND THEM AT ONE CBD DOT Com. I can't think of any better set of people born on the same day in the same year to start birthday twins with the subject of our discussion. Today on the podcast. Marcus I know. This is the one that we ended up going back to right away as the first one to present and it makes the most sense on. December eighteenth nineteen forty three Keith Richards. And Bobby keys to men who would be bonded at the HIP onstage throughout the world for a long time. Together we're born in separate parts of the world with they would get together and become part of a chapter of rock and roll history that's pretty astounding. It really is and the worth did he did with the rolling stones on some of their albums is just remarkable but then you look even further into his remarkable and exceptional career. And you see some of the people that he's played with and you're like Oh my God. That's his saxophone all my God. That's his saxophone. And you say that over and over again and we will. Is We Look into this episode of birthday twins and I thought where do we start with this because we found out a lot as we did our research and some of it was verifying what we already knew or building on what we already knew and I thought maybe we should start where they met Bobby Keyes Was Born in Texas and he met the rolling stones at San Antonio Eighteen Fair He was one of the band's it was on the bill in nineteen sixty four. That's at the very beginning of the stones taking on America. And that's how they met. I think just built from there and over the years the records in the stones catalogue alone. The Bobby's played off in somewhere later in the episode. We're going to name our five favorites real quick shotgun style five favorites. That's the crux of it. And and I. I got to talk the Bobby When he was doing the suffering bastards tour and we'll be dipping into that a little bit as we go through this episode talking about Keith Richards and Bobby Keys. I'm excited to dig into this and Sherifi favorite songs as well because Bobby keys is an interesting NFL. Oh I think they had a little bit of a falling out over the years which we will discuss. I knew hardly anything about this relationship other than the fact that they played together. And so the dig into the closeness of the relationship and how it developed has been a lot of fun and I can only imagine what Bobby keys has seen with those cats being kind of wing man so to speak absolutely. And when you're Keith Richards wingmen your imagination can run wild a little bit and you can figure out you know about the stuff at the riot house and the things that made it into the movie cock Sucker Blues.

I never say this to people. I really don't but I feel like your life anybody's life could be a movie but I feel like your life could be a movie that people would wanNA see us. Something funny said that because basically Hollywood sometimes down the street because yes I have. I have a story. There's no question about it you know after the movie I was like there's one guy I wanted to interview. I said I have to speak with. I have to talk to Keith. And you were so kind to really communicate with me and follow through so I thanked you off air. I will thank you on here to thank you again. Keith. I appreciate everything you enjoy as. Well thank you. You know the fact that this is. Your first acting. Job is astonishing to me. It's maybe the most unbelievable thing I've seen almost two hundred interviews. You're you're like a natural at this. Well you know. I you know the the guy that I was acting alone. Or who is acting alongside? Nation is Shay Tommy to call me. He had said and he's very right guys like him and I We Act lives. You know We just didn't get into degrees walking away with our life or one piece was our degree you do. When you're in Rome you do as the Romans you know this you know. Take it to make it all these things. Come to mind when I think of a bit of school of hard knocks. If you will you know it's it's you know. I I look at you know most actors that I interview they go looking for acting but in your case. Keith. It's just the opposite acting came looking for you is. That's that's a correct statement right happening and it's funny too because it was all in the same area over by Tompkins Square Park on down by Mary. Street and those areas For some reason everywhere I went. Somebody asked me. Are you an actor? Would you like to act? I think it was topped square. That's right by West one. I think we've seen eighty nine. It was a short Sean Penn. Movie I don't know what they wanted me to do. They just asked me. If I like Sean Penn and of course I do and I show people think I look like him and they left. I left and I almost did. It seem like came by and says what are you crazy. We've been running from cameras a whole life. Now you've got to run into it so that was the end of that and We went away and they went away. But I've been asked three or four times Never stuck to the point because it just I just didn't feel right. I feel like a you know. I just ignored it but this time I was the first avenue and Fourteenth Street and at the time I was approached I was also looking to find something new to do because you know I was. I was found. It was a carpenter and I went down in the first towel down and I got sick and I can no longer do the work I used to do. So after beating all of that and get through all of that nonsense I not the Kinda guy to sit around so it was perfect. Timing and Michelle. Mone saw and they convinced me they say come on. Just do just prove US wrong because I told them I. I don't think it's Nelson a you know I've been asked before but it's not for me. She shouldn't aren't you a little curious and she was right so I went and I did that and they proved me wrong. And you're walking towards I think the L. train right and they kind of said I wish standing while I was walking toward trade. I felt somebody somebody looking at. I was like Oh my God some kind of bite me in the tail. What could it be? Could it be standing? Stop alongside the train station and a cigarette and it's funny. Because I was just try I was was quitting at the time and I just said to hell with it just have one and I waited and I turned to my left and there was this girl. Lucre and I looked and she asked me you an actor and that's when she said yes. I know you looking around. I follow you. She said she was following me for a couple of bucks when she went into view about you know example tell started when you hear that story about you know because that happens to other actors but it never works out like it worked for you. It always works out horribly right. They say. Do you want to be an actor and it's always a nightmare story about you know some kind of awful. We always have either of you back For other minutes but this man is meant forty six week and it starts with Russell getting electrocuted and ends with Marc Maron yelling at the band in the electrocution scene man. That's pretty grisly. I think Russell does a pretty good job of well not Russell. But you know that actor's name thank you. Yeah it seems to try and say it disappears from Ed. Bill does a good job of making me feel like he is a real lump of meat that just got cooked on a state of man. It's it's disturbing Yanni really keeps it up to. I mean it's there's there's parts during the sped next to especially Where he just he just really continues to be really out of it really well that they didn't know one called it an ambulance. That's buried the seventy lake. We're like mine. You're just got electrocuted a little bit. Because because I've got a little bit of a morbid streak I had to look up other famous onstage electrocutions. Ooh Yeah so Turns George Harrison was electrocuted in the let it be documentary so you can actually watch him put his lips to the megaphone and get like a little shaky doesn't collapse or anything like that but he does sort of back off shows a little bit of visible pain and you can find that clip on YouTube Keith Richards I was thinking I was going to have to wait until Peter Jackson's done here with Dr. Welby reassembling of Lee keeping it in keeping that part. Maybe that'll be the focus of it. Now lose be like the movie where George gets electrocuted Keith. Richards was also electrocuted. But it was much more like what happens on stage here In nineteen sixty five in Sacramento. His Guitar bumped into an ungrounded MIC stand. Apparently sparks flew in. There was a loud bang and the manager actually thought that Keith had been assassinated. They did rush him to the hospital unconscious and heap. He did not wake up until I think it was later that day in the hospital and he woke up and said man that was good. Probably Rush. I think I'll do that. I thought of. I haven't seen a movie since it came out in theaters And so I forgot. I forgot everything because I know a larger memory and yeah so when I watched the minute before I went back in like watch the rest of the movie And I was like Oh if he on drugs flake I was like are they pretending to be elected because he's on drugs like I couldn't remember if there was like a drug thing so anyway but but it makes sense that he gets electrocuted. I guess it's just like because you don't think about rockstars. Getting electrocuted probably happens a lot less than it did in the seventy S or sixty S. Or whatever when you know now that technology is pretty good like but I wonder if anybody has recently only guess you looked it up like actually. Isn't that famous? Still have you for sure there? I mean there's a long string of them from the seventy so it was definitely like a you know we quit and quite figured out how to ground these things yet. like As freely was electrocuted from kiss and he actually wrote a song about it called shock me later on and then but there are actually people who died from electrocution In the seventies. Yeah Yeah let's Harvey from stone. The crows which was sort of a pub rock band in the early Seventies. He died in in Wales from poorly grounded. Mike Electrocution and Keith Ralph. From the yardbirds died in his basement recording studio from an improperly grounded guitar apparently but yet there's actually a kind of a grisly video. You can find of the band. Hot Hot heat Playing an outdoor festival in Ohio. Somewhere in I don't remember exactly what year it was like. Fairly like the twenty tens. I think where the one of the guitar players get electrocuted and collapses and it's very similar to this like no one really realizes what's happened until he's been laying on the ground for a couple of seconds and then you know the music kind of slowly fades out and everyone in the crowd was like what's going on and it so it's it's still sort of a modern problem. I think trying to put on an outdoor show with you know. Weather conditions in long runs of cable across a field and things like that makes it more dangerous. But Yeah Yeah. I didn't realize how dangerous rock and roll lists the threat and there's other I think really good acting and decides besides just Russell Billy's You know I mean there's there's all this confusion is going on you know and then that's that's actually what jeff bb says. Hey what's going on we here? We also hear like this. Maybe I got it from somewhere or some Transcript site whatever but stinking stinking roads you know so. A roads roads fender bass wise at coming roads. Some some kind of Either Anchor Guitar. Some sort is the root. It's like a brand name erodes Oregon too but I didn't see any of that hanging out instead. Yeah and noticed that both Jeff and Russell. Have like to have two microphones on their MIC stand Sort of tied together which was kind of a weird seventies thing that they did do. That was Sometimes if they rip especially if they were recording the show. You'd have one Mike that fed the PA in one that went to the recording stuff But apparently the grateful dead also did this sort of a weird early form of noise canceling because they would they would put their speakers. Grateful dead put their speakers behind them and did a lot of like weird separation so like the base when we came out of this portion and the guitar came out of his portion to train gift. Things a little more dynamic separation but apparently if you put too close together and you do one in positive polarity in one in negative polarity sort of does some fancy noise cancelling thing on really know but apparently is common in the seventy s until we figured out you know plug ins and laptops and things so very cool. I'm writing so much I do have been baby myself. I was GonNa say you wonder if he's ever seen that before but yeah well the the big thing I've seen is that You know it looks. It seems like there's there's a there's a fair amount of duct tape that I think has happened there at at at Russell's microphone and I've seen lead singer do that before I've done sound work with a few bands quite a few years ago. There was one that Kevin just started going crazy with taping like okay. If you want to do that you're that that's interesting. I wouldn't at seems unsafe. Well I don't know. Duct tape is Great. I guess no don't don't don't know absolutely. I never thought I came from the south. Everything's held together with duct tape. I'm the other thing that that that's at. The very beginning of it is the that the plumbing song is ending. I mean it's not really ending. That's not supposed to end but it's ends because of everyone leaving their instruments in running towards wrestling then than certainly away getting off the stage but You know in the draw. I think in a normal fashion. I think the drums are kind of the one that kind of goes along. The drummer can just be on his own groove and I mean he's sexy Griffin centrally and. Yeah he and he can't maybe can't see what's happening sunders obstruction. Yeah Ding dongs. Away can't Ding dongs meaning drums. Let's that's what I'm gonNA call them now. You know what I'm talking about the hidden things drummers love it when you call me being Donner's I think too so. Oh Yeah Yeah. They totally loved that. Because it's very cool in rock and roll.

He said he said he wouldn't care. He's cool that so long. You Know Your Dad's soul many variations on that story. But I did hear him talk about it. There was a documentary on Netflix. Right did you know he was? You know he took only put mixed a little bump with it and had you know. Put some dad into him. It's an interesting way to honor your father. But it's Keith Richards Way. We're talking about people who reached the very top of their fields. And in some cases, change the way we see the world, it's hosted by Rico Gagliano and faith Sailly. You may. Remember them from public radio? You'll also find a link in the episode notes and don't forget to tell your friends about this. Marvelous new podcast one plus one. I mean, you never know maybe one of them will be the plus one to your own. Life's work. It's January nineteen sixty seven in London England, John Lennon is sitting at the piano and his home in the suburbs. Writing a new song? It's based on a newspaper account of a young socialite named Tara Brown killed in a car crash. John comes up with something he thinks will work. The John's having trouble finishing the song. So he heads on over to Paul's house just a few blocks from Abbey Road together. They finished John's verses and round out the tune by adding a fragment from one of Paul's then old number he'd never managed to us. As soon as John? Here's Paul sing that couple of he says. Yeah, that's it. This is how John Paul write music. Quickly intuitively, finishing each other's ideas. Sometimes they have trouble remembering who wrote what that's how closely they work together. But they're not done with this song yet, they wanna make it wilder more Avalon guard. Abbey Road studios, February tenth nineteen sixty seven and the Beatles. The most famous band in the world are throwing a party. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of their so as Marianne faithfull, and Graham Nash. Oh, and a forty piece orchestra dressed in tuxedos, clown, noses and rubber bald caps. The bizarre attire is meant to loosen the buttoned up classically trained musicians. So they'll deliver what Paul wants? We'd like you to do some free form improvisation. The orchestra is confused by the request. They wanna please them after all he's Paul McCartney. But classical musicians don't really do free form improvisation. Producer George Martin steps in. Okay. We don't want complete free form we want each individual musician to climb from lowest no to highest at his own pace the orchestra nods. They try over and over to do what they're asked John dressed in a crushed velvet jacket and sipping wine from teacup watches from the sidelines. He wrote most of the sun, but he's fine. Letting Paul cokes the orchestra into performing what John calls and orgasm of sound. Paul tries to make John's concept come alive, urging musicians to randomly play an ascending scale growing louder until they climax on the same chord on the eighth try. They finally mail it. Everyone knows they've just witnessed something special.

Let's say Keith Richards is a symbol of something which he is tremendous symbol to everybody. But what does he been doing for the last twenty years smiling? Have you ever seen a photograph of case riches where he wasn't smiling? Not in the last, no, no. And he's not bashing. Somebody. Fucking kill him in fucking mic. And you know like anger, which is, you know, when you hit the dope thing and you're, you're so don't up anxious. And Mick is if so fit and wants to be a solo. You know, this classic interviews from the eighties when Keith would rip into him. Yeah. How so? How do you have an fucking make that would be the first thing of his? Yeah. So let's gone and that's wonderful example of what I'm trying to talk about him and and for your audience to understand that. Yes, some people have to go through that in order to achieve some kind of like enlightenment and clearly he's got like the all these beautiful children grandchildren. You know songs. The greatest guitar player, some writer, you bet, you know, I mean, unbelievable, simplistic, brilliant. All about feel like Steve Jones. I wanna get into a couple of things about moments in your life where you overcame adversity. One of which would be after it seemed like you'd be okay because seventies you were in silver head, and then you were in detective and silver head was on deep purples label, and then detective is on led zeppelin's label and the at the time was that the album's not right. So we're going to redo the whole thing and zepplin ended up spending about a million dollars right on record opened for kiss all this stuff. You know, sort of just to give the audience and idea of the trappings of that time, but then in around what? What year would it be when you were living in l. a. and the like sort of a tiny apartment and said seventy four? Oh, no. It's like after I'm saying. When all of that collapse all that collapsed. We just had a little house on vista in Hollywood and happy lock, you know, a broke and trying to figure out what to do next and this is pre check it best grew sobriety. Well, I, yeah, brusett sobriety after detective folded which was an unbelievable journey when you under the aegis of Led Zeppelin at their peak and you a an artist on that label, man, you know. It was so difficult for us, you know, because I loved them, you know, but we were waiting around, you know, for a year or two before we recorded a million bucks, what do you expect? It's going to happen. Yes, a mile mistakes, nineteen seventy seven. No. So coke still was a thought of his good thing then. So it wasn't because I bought Peru. It was awful. Then come. What happened was I did a TV show code WPN Cincinnati, and and I was the cigarette in spent scum of the earth, and it was tremendously hugely responded to, especially my character was. And as a result, I started to get, you know, work is an actor and analytic took off, you know, just to clarify for listeners, you had stopped acting for good long..
