"Your advantage at the time, and from a tactical standpoint, the age would've worked in our favor. Former Phillies Vice President Bill Giles The Phillies decided they want because we had a couple of good hitters that weren't very good in the field. Keith Moreland and Greg Luzinski. It was decided that there would be a yes no vote at the National League meetings in August 1980. If a simple majority seven of the 12 teams voted. Yea, the designated hitter rule would be adopted. And when the discussion came up about the D H. We were informed. That the D H would not be effective until a year and 1/2 later, so I didn't know what to do. Knowing that the D H rule wouldn't take effect in the NL until 1982 and now uncertain of what to do. Bill Giles tried to reach out to his owner. Ruli Carpenter on August 13th of 1980 the day that the vote was taken in the national leg on the designated hitter. I was fishing with my daughter and my God, daughter at a location in the Delaware by known as the Anchorage so I couldn't get in touch so I didn't know what to do so I abstained in the boat. And, of course, an abstention is same as the No. Again former Cardinals general manager John Claiborne. I was less than happy. I mean, where is counting my votes on my fingers.

The American League West the featured story out. There is going to be the Houston Astros I. think that the as can give them a run for their money, but the as just don't have. A whole lot of depth. They've got the guy people people who can mash if they can go mano, a Mano and count on the rest of the League to not just lay over and die for the Houston Astros. which I don't think is going to happen because a lot of anger there by I. think that you know you've got. You've got a strong team in Oakland and unfortunately you still have strong team in Houston. Angels in Ranger's kind of meddling in the middle and then mariners on the bottom. We were pretty much in agreement on that John. had. As Astros Rangers Mariners. Angels as Astros Rangers Mariners. Yeah Like the Astros and third place and get down with that. I think that they I i. think with how much inks that will be against them. They'll feel the hate from the other players. They ought ruin their psyche. I think not being able to cheat. You know when I wrote down when I was taking my notes from Seattle I, just wrote tank mode. Right anything else I because there's just nothing worth talking about, and then it gets fairly similar with the Baltimore. Orioles Baltimore Orioles, perpetually Ben Overpaid veterans and bad rookies just. Nothing to look forward to nothing worth going to the ballpark for except the allure of Camden yards, and probably the first time you've been there. I've never been there, but after the first time you've been there. That's shined from a ballpark that opened in the early nineties is. Probably logon. You realize you're watching a crappy baseball team. They do have Taylor Davis now. From Taylor Davis. Yes, the entertaining catcher from the cubs who has a lifelong passion of just staring passionately into the camera whenever possible he's pretty much. The triple A. Slash vigili baseball's version of Jim Helper for the moments that the John Krasinski just stare into the camera. He kind of does that during the context of a broadcast of a baseball game. Yeah. I agree with that former his anywhere since the cubs. This is first. Direct stop. Stop not. Ticket Flyer on good old. Taylor Davis there. They do have Jose. eglesias was a nice prospect once upon a time now he's just kind of middling veteran They've got Alex Cobb who has playoff pitching experience? And then they have Mr Anthony Santander who we watched play for I. Believe the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona folly once upon a time. Did you say Mr? Senior said Mr I believe Santander is. An anglo-saxon type type. I don't know I could be wrong I think it. Is I think it would be a senior. You'd be sending Senor Santander. We started with the Baltimore Orioles but I probably because it's easy. Easiest to dismiss them last and everything else they could be. They can be front stage for for something. Yeah, bigeye younger, their broadcast booth, this was. More of a health and safety. Worth mentioning. Maybe we'll. We're going to see a lot more younger guys here in twenty twenty Jan just because you don't have the restrictions I. Don't think it matters if you call guy up as far as the service time is concerned once he's you know if he's part of your taxi squad. He's available to us and. You know with the with the always possible. Looming possibility of injury that you're going to have to fulfil. You have a forty man roster, but you plus ten on that forty man roster you can have if it gets three and eventually, it'll be twenty six. Th, there were rule changes, and there were rule adaptations. To adjust for the sixty game schedule, but Baltimore for is not the only team in the East Yasser have the Toronto Blue Jays man. The big story for them this summer has been that. They're not welcome in Canada so They're going to bounce around. don't have an official declaration of just where their home games are going to be played PNC park seem like it was brought up Baltimore. was brought up. Ask option I like the idea of PNC. It's in the central, and it's in the National League so sharing with the pirates, basically not gonna see each other, unless they play each other in the world series in. Blue Jays, pirates, world series, and you think it's going to happen. Put some money on presents. It's gotta be some long odds I would have to assume so all right. The Blue, Jays Justin, smoak is out. Travis shock comes over from the brewers hit tanner, roark and they're big guy. He is their shortstop lot of second generation going on I don't know who Laura's correal senior is, but they have Laura's girls junior they have Be Craig. Busiest kid they have like grow juniors kit fly, grow senior kid I should say and they've got Dante bichette son, so they've got a lot of bloodlines. They've got a very strong defense The only question is, will there bullpen be able to preserve it for the Toronto Blue Jays, but bluejays orioles and Jason. Warriors are the teams you figure will not be in the mix in the American league. East Boston doesn't look all that exciting either to do. They think that it's some combination of. Tampa Bay top by no time, red sox and you least had something Britain for the Mariners I had nothing I didn't blink. It's the only thing that's blink I didn't even write anything, but for the Red Sox have their red. allred. Except when they play on the road while they always were the the beyond their cap, I suppose Nathan evolve the Martine Perez. Highlight their starting rotation. They've got jd Martinez and I think you know. Boston produces a lot of fool's gold, especially younger in their career notably I mean who's who's the most notable Boston. Red Sox player of your lifetime. There's so many for what about Nova Noah. Big PAPI or no more or PA- Joya, or I would say poppy just talk. L. Plenty. Of Jersey Guy, yeah, I. I mean there's there's a lot. There's a lot going on there, but there's just not Keith. Moreland kid plays there, but like Zander Bogart's Jackie Bradley Jr.. Ann McKee Bets and Mookie Betts is no longer with them and I think that that's obviously they're the their most noticeable departure in addition to to David Price But Boston is a big brand, but I don't think that there's a lot of substance to them this year of course..

"I met plummets welcome back so happy that Mitch Morris could be with us again. One of the nice guys of the NFL and getting his inside and what will happen in this coming football season. I'll say it again. I said it before. I do believe that The NFL can pull this off more so than college football because college football there still there. Still college students. They're still kids, and we've seen There's been some irresponsible kids and irresponsible people of all ages. Don't get me wrong, But here in our town of us, we've seen a lot of kids congregate and say, I'm not going to get it and they get it. And listen. I know the rate of death is very low with young people. But I've known Cem Cem kids in their twenties who've got it and we're very, very sick, but they came through it. They came through it so It's going to be interesting to see and this is a big month. We are in With the with the N B, A and with major league baseball Earlier today. San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he initially thought about sitting out the Orlando restart, given his age, but decided to go because he was confident. And the precautions in place and the opportunity to continue conversations around social justice. Quoting now this is Coach pop. I talked to a lot of people. I talked to Adam Silver, the commissioner, and you find out pretty quickly what he and his staff of many have gone through. To put this thing together. Honestly, do believe. And it's not just me being a loyal soldier, then Ba. I've done my share of criticizing here and there when I was thought it was necessary. But I don't know where else he would be safe as you are right now. So he is saying As a 71 year old man. He feels very safe in the bubble. I feel he will be very safe in the bubble. If if his players are smart if the people who are around him of smart are smart, my complaint, not my complaint, but my concern. For a long time has been. What about the irresponsible players is granted. You're talking about people? No, Zion Williamson just turned 20 this week. You know, they want to go out. They want a party. They want to see girls. So I I think we're going to see some players get the cover 19. I just hope That will. What will not happen is when you go out and they start this n BA season or the Major League baseball season and somebody gets it where you have to shut the whole thing down Well, earlier this week we visited With Keith Moreland. Keith Moreland, of course, one of the great Texas Longhorn baseball players of all time he won a World Series championship with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played for the Chicago Cubs. He was Chicago Cubs broadcaster just one of the finest guys I know where he currently is a play by play man and color analyst for the Texas Longhorn Network. For Longhorn Baseball Along with low, Galindo and Greggs went down and we wanted to get his insight on the start of Major League Baseball and college football is here's our visit earlier this week with our friend Keith Moreland. How are you, my friend and happy Friday afternoon to you? Well, I think we're in time about it. It's a warm day. It's a little warm if you were on the golf course. But you've got to get the water. That's first thing in. The second thing is, is this a crazy time? We've got going on in this world. Can you? I can't imagine with your background because your summers and springs were nominated since you were about what? 10 years old with baseball in sports, And this is, Is this driving you crazy? Well, how do you been passing the time going by Well, I'm still not like to be outdoors, so little golf and a little fish in the sea and protecting myself with the mask and my family and trying to keep us Ah. As up to date as you can on everything that's going on Samos. Everybody's trying to do trying to do the best. We can get along, but I'll tell you what sports as we know it. And as I've finally made that decision this week look at sports. As we know it will never be the same. I don't think I just There are a lot of people that are spending a lot of time doing other things in sports, and it's going to be really difficult to get back and get fans. To the stadiums in the ballparks and those kind of things. So you know the future. Here is a real turning point in the sports world. Keith. What about college football? We've been discussion that discussing this for months in the news this week about the Big 10. I'm pessimistic ideas. I think if we play, it's going to be just a conference schedule. What do you think's going to happen with college football? Well, I think you just like everybody just watching. And you know the you know, looking at different schools and listening to different schools and then course being in the industry of Of doing games and college games in high school games over the last 30 years is a broadcaster. Uh, probably 10 days ago was the first time I had doubt. That we would would have some college football on and some high school football, But it was each passing day and more news. It's coming out. It's getting to the point where If you were thinking about being in Baton Rouge on the third Saturday in September, whatever it is, I'm not sure that the long words will be there and we're playing. I would say right now it's about 40 60 that would well even played college football. Well, that is that is just a killer, and I can't imagine as a college football player, You know, we saw it with the baseball team last year. I saw you last game Y'all broadcast and that team was hot. David Pierce. His team was hot. The longer we'll double team, but but but the football guys, those who want to graduate those who want to play pro football, It's just it's must be maddening to them. Oh, yeah. You know you feel you really feel for kids They're trying to do the best they can do. I mean that we look at him. It's college football players. They first all their students. And they're probably trying to figure out what their educational situation is going to be. What's going to be in class on campus? What safety issues are and then then throw on top of it. They've got to do some, You know, it's really difficult. You know, people realized, Yeah, they're getting their scholarship, but You spend a lot of time and effort away from not practice and not on the field and not at games. Get prepared, the things you have to do to get stronger. Take care of your body and those kind of things to play college football. And then all of a sudden you paid this huge price to get there And then all of a sudden there's nothing there. I'm sure there's some huge disappointment. There's a lot of young men who are trying to find their identity right now. What's what's going to take place? It's really difficult. Own coaches to because they can't give a lot of advice because they really don't know what's going on as well. Major league Baseball is set to begin at the end of the month. A 60 game schedule Can Major league baseball pull this off? Well, I'm not sure about that in because if you and I were talking in a normal time, and it would probably be Astros Rangers we say what minor against Verlander should be a good matchup tonight. Well, there is no match up and I'm not sure how this is gonna go forward. I spent a lot of time reading and looking at what's different players say, and there's a lot of players right now. We're talking about a fact that you know they really don't feel safe..

Once the season began to any future increase in capacity will depend on developments on the hay for health and safety front. The stadium's capacity is 67,000 thatyou showed you have big football is in the big 12 cars. When it gets the news. It's going to be a room around 100,000 but 120,000 seat stadium. But they're going to only have 25% capacity. We heard earlier this week that the Tennessee Titans believe their capacity is only going to be 14,000 fans there at the stadium. Gerald R. Jones has been the quiet man. Jerry has been the quiet man. He has not said anything about anything back to the phone lines. John is calling from Round rock. Welcome, John. You're on K. L B. J Radio. I have to Friday Yet happy Friday, you, buddy. So you know if we have coastal ball and help together, we dio. I don't see how it's going to be anything beyond the power Five conferences because Regan article Are you today about MLB? He's testing program and looking at the dollar figures are things what was required to do this? Oh, yeah. I can't imagine those smaller school will be able to afford that to keep the kids safe. You're exactly right. Howard. The Howard pains Hauer, the Sam Houston State your soul. Ross's away. Texas Army do away They could force that. Yeah. Without eliminating a bunch of sports, but but the power five will do it. The power five and Notre Dame will do it. And it's interesting about Notre Dame Notre Dame. You know they're independent, but they're there They play. Where they play the A. C. C in basketball. Yeah, Yeah, There are games here with us. So I think you'll see maybe Notre Dame finally going to a to a to a conference. Probably a cc. You could live with conference only games for the Longhorns. We have to dynamite again. Yeah, yeah, came out of, you know that's it's and it's interesting that Texas loses the big game. Against l s u but interesting to the Aggie serious because the Aggies if they would play a 12 game schedule, they could go nine and three because they think they end with the courts. I gotta play Bama. Alice you in Auburn, But from where I've been looking at the Aggie should win the rest of the game. So In the SEC also read today. John is talking about possibly expanding tattoo 10 games in conference by adding some games, so that would be good for SEC fans and for the Aggies. Your conference would expand, You'll be losing. Ah, lot of Mickey Mouse games. That's the thing about the S E. C. As I was talking John about Texas and you tap in Texas in South Florida. Gz SEC has some awful games. No more, Jack. No more sort of. Oh, exactly. Exactly. And no more that Mickey Mouse in November 15th weekend where they play. Nobody remember that weekend. I just did that. Yeah, But don't you agree? Pro football can handle it better than college football. Yeah, And I think pro football. Just wait. Snap Those Sunday flocks of a Saturday slot if they don't have. Wow, you know, I hadn't thought about that G. I think. Well, that's good. Yeah, I think you're exactly right. Oh, yeah, there'll be chomping at those bits will think. Oh, man. Hey, John. Thank you for the call. Have a great weekend. Appreciate very much. All right. All right. Bye bye 51283605 90. That's the phone number coming up next. "Evening, big fan of hitting a mouse and with more frequency, and he has exhibited World Siri's Phillies against the Orioles. But when Garry Guardian Ram will let you go into this, it was a young team on the rise. Ray, Why don't you kind of set it up here yelling? Gary joins the team in 1975. The Phillies were just starting to put some things together. They have been down for a long time. Gary referenced Steve Carl's great year in 72 but they were just starting to put that nucleus together and You know, Put Gary out in center field office, and Gary. We had talked about this a little bit before you came on. But you know that the trade when it was made was not a terribly popular trade in Philadelphia, because the guy that they the guy that they traded to bring you in here was Willie Montanas. Who was who was a really good player and a really colorful player and very popular. So when you came into town, there are a lot of people saying, Why did we make this trade We like Willie Montana, So you weren't stepping in to the best of situations, but I think you made it work out pretty well. Well, you know. It wasn't a difficult a zit was trying to come in behind Willie Mays. Suppose that's true. Yeah. Oh, point. You know, soon as I get up with the Giants that year, they end up trading maze and so I mean, people weren't that happy to see me out there and I can remember Because I talked to Larry Boy quite a bit. Then say. Who else did we get? Right? So Yeah. That's how it went, but it was Like you said It was a It was a young team, but man you talk about Great work habits. And you had to You know you were at the ballpark 1 30 or to apply. When we were home, So when I lived in New Jersey, I wrote him with Mike Smith. Then are you know we go back with our wives? And when I was on the Philadelphia cider rode in with Larry for a number of years. Ah, well, but you had to be ready to be in there by 1 30 Where today they try and get there like about 55 30 But it was a chance to sit around and get no. You're Teammates. We played a lot of bridges with Harvard and Jim Kaat. Lot of cards and just talked about, you know, talked about playing baseball and it was a lot of fun then. Well, I know you had and you came to the team 75 finished out that season and 76 things really clicked. I think for you and for the team as a whole. I mean, you had a great year here at 3 30 Six home runs knocked in 68 runs, stole 33 bases on DH established yourself as a great defensive center fielder, and that whole team really kind of came together that year, finally got to the playoffs the first time the Phillies had been a postseason team since the whiz kids Aah and you just get the feeling that that was the start of something. I mean, everything was kind of coming together. Mike was coming of age Larry Luzinski. I mean, you had the feeling you had the nucleus of a team that could really go places. Yeah, we've We did. I mean, we thought we were going to be A matter of time before we would have that first. Ah World Series ring. On Just never never came together for And that was, you know, that was difficult to go through. And then I I remember when we got The year we got Pete Rose. And if you're if you were part of our team You hated to hear that They felt you needed leadership. You needed somebody to get you over the hump. A za player. And so when they got Pete Rose, he was supposed to be our savior. Turns out, he waas. He Being exhibited leadership that was No, that was exceptional. And that really was a key part of us of You know, being able to To finally get that championship ring. So the Phillies made a good choice. A good decision. Ah, number one to bring Pete over and Number two Good decisions of green Dallas green down. As well. So it really Gave us a jolt. And you know, we just I only had that missing ingredient one of the things that Ah, that team is notorious for and you mentioned Dallas is there was there was a lot of Strife, tension. With that team. Dallas would not be afraid to bring it. Some of his outburst were famous. Um, was that Atmosphere, which was, as I say highly contentious was that part of what helped make that team good. Well, I think it wass, but You know? Prior to Dallas coming down. I mean, we had won quite a few games and Daniels are Wass. You know the manager of that time, a great guy and he looked at us as professionals. We could go and do whatever we needed to do to win the game. Uh, and that's how he met. That's how he managed it. And bring in Dallas Green, who It was the opposite. Of that. You know you Hey, was on you all the time. And you know that, Jeff, you sharp and chip do You know, always kind of looking around. Wanting, Tio. You know for me question wanted wanting to make the line up. So, Yeah, change. You change your habits and stuff used to be able to. Well, you know, today I don't feel like taking infield practice. But it became mandatory. There's certain things certain disciplines that came that we were not accustomed to. That I think that that was very important for us, now with Dallas with with the Phillies. He and I, we went at it all the time. But, you know, I did get a chance to tell him when he was general manager of the Cubs that You know, I thought he did a good job and we became pretty good friends of You know, not pretty good friends. But you know, we were definitely friends and we could talk it out. After that. I remember that that September of 1980 very well because you guys had Ah, it'd have been a very bumpy ride for that team. All Europe at one point early in August. You were like seven games out, and people were ready to write you off. Then in September, you kind of kicked it into gear. But But Dallas shuffle, as you said, shuffle the lineup a lot, and he went through a stretch where he benched Bob Boone to play Keith Moreland. He benched Greg Luzinski to play Lonnie Smith and he sat you two play Del answer in center field a time when I guess they were like two weeks left in the regular season, and every game was vitally important. On it was it did not go down well in the clubhouse. I know a lot of the guys were not happy about that. I know you weren't happy about it, but it worked. You got to the playoffs, and then once you got in the playoffs, he went back to you guys. And every one of those guys. I mentioned Bull Bob Boone, and you had terrific post seasons. I mean, when you got a chance to play again, everybody rose to the challenge and help the team win a World Series. But It was a rough ride getting there, Gary Yeah, they're no questions. Like I said, we We kind of Ah.

"We just have to be, you know, do that to the best of our ability and hopefully we can get through this season. Ah, it's ah I can understand not wanting to play. I don't understand. I mean the baseball or his professional sports right now. Baseball and basketball. If you get in Major league soccer if you get sick, you get sick. I don't get it. I really don't get it. Alright, let's Ah Let's go back to the phones and see who we got here. Let's go to a gym gym. You're on W Good morning. How are happy? Independence Day? Yeah, thanks. You too. I I was listening to work. I originally called Tio Connect the dots from the Charlie Young thing, But you already straightened that out. Yeah, I know. He went to the Rams, but I forgot that he went and went for another quarterback. He went for Ron Dworsky. No, you're You're on the right that wavelength anyway. Right? I I'm kind of with you with the state of baseball the day I really don't like this current walk, strikeout, homeruns re outcome, you know, sucks game that it's become kind of frustrated by that. It's going to be a whatever happens this year with baseball. If anything, doesn't want to be an exhibition, it may be a compelling exhibition. Because of the brevity of it. It'll be between exhibition in the really thing. It'll be between exhibition and the real thing. Yeah. Yeah, I'm looking forward to them getting so men, but I expect maybe 25% of the Reich and father just opt out and maybe another 25% to be sick out, so I don't expect much on the field. All right. Well, you know, it's not going to be the same quality we're used to. Did you have a trade or was that you just wanted to tell me about Charlie could have betrayed for you. When I think website it trades one of the most lopsided in my lifetime. Had to be between the Cardinals and the Yankees. Bob Sykes for willing the game. Believe me, give this part of not only the wind batting titles, but he was part of some amazing cardinal steams. You know, it's probably Jim. It's probably a good trade and steal on one side. But there's nationally there's got to be some trades that we're better than that. But but I appreciate it that I would tell you that wouldn't win. But next week, we'll we'll do something. And maybe you can participate in that. Have a great on July 4th and stay safe. All right. I'm going to tell you about Ah, great trade for the Cubs. I'll tell you how this happened and don't blame me. Larry Bo was traded to the Cubs. And ah And the Cubs in that trade. Originally didn't get Ryan Sandberg his would happen. I'm I'm on the air on an F M station. First it was WW debate. And I called Bo during one of my commercial breaks because he was trying to get a new contract from the Phillies was like 82. I guess it was And Ah, I just called to check on it and he says they're not going to give me the contractor. Trade me. I said, Well, I want it so I couldn't go in there. So we go in the air. Talks about it. There was a catch Your name Keith Moreland. And Boa for Yvonne de Jesus, and that was the particulars of the trade the short stop coming to the Phillies. Well, we talked about it. That night. The Cubs fans went ballistic because Evan Day Jesus was a fan favorite. So the Cubs called the Phil Phillies were pissed that I that I was on the air doing it and they couldn't be pissed at me. I was just doing my job. So the Cubs called off the trade. Three weeks later, the Phillies through in Ryan Sandberg, In that trade to the Cubs. And the trade happened. Ryan Sandberg just didn't fit with the Phillies was a second baseman. They had many trio. Ah, he couldn't play short or third because he didn't have the arm. And he was perfect for Wrigley Field, so Ryan Sandberg had they included Ryan Sandberg three weeks later, If I hadn't called bow in that commercial break, Ryan Sandberg would have never become a Chicago Cubs. It's It's interesting the way that happened. All right, let's go. Ah, back to the phones here. Who's next? Kyle? I get sort of like Mike Mike, you're on W I pay before July. Howard. So here's the reason why Ryan Sandberg's not silly. All right, I know, but I don't know that he would have fit in here. That's that. That's the problem because that players positions Yeah. I want to talk to my father grew up in ST Louis Cardinals fan, So I got the watch Who? Brock. Chloe Mickey events, Coleman Ozzie Smith and the way they played the game. I would give anything that had the game of peace will go back to you. If you walk. You put so much pressure on that picture. If you're going to walk, it could turn into a double. Exactly Exactly. And, you know, I hear players today. You know, Ryan, our when they did the shift on him. Everybody would say, why don't you put the ball down the third baseline and he would say, Well, that's not the game. Well, if they're taking the game away from you, you take it away from land. You know, and I know what nobody wants to see Ryan Howard on the ball down the third baseline and single. They want to see him hit the 400 foot own front. But the game Is ruined by that. And do you think they will ever shift out of the game? I like the shift if players air that good if they leave the whole left side of the infield open. I mean, because all I want to do is hit a home run ball there. That's exactly right. They better not take away the shift because I'd be stupid. Meanwhile, just tell players where you can hit it where you can hit it, you know, let him shift. If they want to shift, let the players do the other things and then I'll stop shifting. You have a man on second, They still shift something with Ryan Howard Ryan Howard. They would shift with a man on third. They keep the third baseman and to keep him close and he wouldn't take the base hit, right..

"Hit it hard. But with the Enfield pulled in Pablo got it through the giants have gone back in front five to four clutch. Hit by Sandoval. Giants would add on pinch hit RBI from Hector Sanches a wild pitch scored another run. And then they turned it over to gene much. She gene, gene, the dancing. Machine. Threw a scoreless tenth his first career save and the giants beat the dodgers in LA seven to four that was on may eleventh twenty fourteen and this has been Brian Murphy with this date in giants history. Nice. Nice job. Murph time for a quick check on other game. So let's go places with Toyota how to town scoreboard. Lot of action here in the Saturday. The Red Sox beat the Mariners say nine to five Felix Hernandez getting knocked around pretty good poor sellers pitching great for the Red Sox. Jay, Bruce, Homer number twelve there Keith Moreland number twelve where he hits when everyday Tigers the twins and game one five three Turnball. Very good pitcher Pineda in that one. Lot of home runs and that one but the big game. I thought cubs beat the brewers two to one in fifteen innings an outstanding games Davies and hamels booked up in that one contraire a walk off home run for the cubs. Cubs are just on fire. The White Sox beat the Blue Jays seventy-two Sanchez homerun. And that was an opposite field shot for him as first of the year. Grischuk a home run their Stroman got knocked around pretty good Yvonne Nova was the winner for the White Sox. The as what do you think they walked it off again against the Indians? Three two Trevor Bauer and Hendrix started that one and Laureano walk off single for the athletes today. Well angels beat the oil seventy-two Albert host two home runs today. I hope they gave him the ball back number seven and eight as Harvey got the win. He only went four maybe didn't get the win. But he started for the angels today. The pirates to two one over the cardinals that is final Jordan Lyles pitching, very well for Pittsburgh.

"Like the ball through Buckner? Lewke Wilson scores lead twin? He played on the dodgers. Right. And I remember thinking that like oh my God. Bill Buckner was so fast because he was like like when he was on the cubs. He barely could walk injury. I remember watching those highlights years later thinking. Yeah. Bill Buckner, actually, that's where he got hurt. He's playing Pete Rose was a great Bill Buckner story when I was young probably before the eighty four seats. He was he was ninety four season. He was traded one eighty three retina time when he was on a cubs. They had a baseball card signing event or something at the at the GM at Harrison school in wonder lake and Bill Buckner showed up. And so we went there might have been a mckenry might have been one of the surrounding areas. My dad took me there. Right. So we waiting line. I had my wonder lake little league, you know, had on ready to rock, and we get up to Bill Buckner. He's got that big bushy moustache. And he's just like you could just tell you even at my age at like eight years old or nine tell he did not want to be there. Right. He looks like another one. And my dad says. Hey, bill. I always tell him. You know, he's gotta tie shoes. You know? So it doesn't get bumming. Feels like you've got something like that. And Buckner just like. Around here. And you didn't care it. So embarrassing. Wow. Dan, don't tell them shoes. I went to a more. Lenny Kaufman gems of dealing with baseball players Mary air Chow anyway. Get to that. We went to a signing. I went I went to go. See Ryan sambergen was doing assigning alley Orleans square mall. And I was like this is great Bryan with my favorite player was to get there. And you know, you get there and there's a gazillion kids door, right? Yeah. And you're waiting in line, and we're waiting and we're waiting, and then all of a sudden you don't like an hour and a half later. Ryan sambergen is leaving the day to get signed really walk away. You get in there. Yeah. That's a bummer. And I was I was salty at Ryan sambergen for a long. He retired came back. And that's when you when you came back, and you were like, oh, that's okay rhinos. Okay now. Wow. Yeah. When I was we were in San Diego visit grandparents and it was a Padres reg game. I don't even think a cubs are playing this. Whoever was there went there. I would deal Jack Murphy Stadium. And this has been been like nine thousand nine hundred eighty seven somewhere in that area. And it was after it was Eric shower. Right. There was a show show the guy who allowed his arm. He I think he he passed away as well. But he was the guy who's a San Diego pitcher. Who hit Andre Dawson in the face? Remember that when Dawson hit a home he was on that surge homerun surge eighty-seven season and the next time he came up Eric Xiaojun, plop them right in the face and Sutcliffe came running out from the dugout. Mainly Wrigley field. Anyway, it was either. I think it was later that season maybe in August or maybe it was the next season. But we were in San Diego. And is before the game is batting practice and Eric shown, I think I've seen his name right there. Yeah. Yeah. He's signing autographs right down by the things. So my designates go down there. Classic. So again, I'm like. When we go down there. You know, we've got the the program and air shows like gills, he goes, would you sign you signed for my son, and he goes. Yeah. Yeah. What's your name? My name's Andrea. And he's like it looks like all right to Andre. Andre Dawson jerk something like that. Yeah. You just see just like signs it like all right, dude. All right. He waited years. Lenny a lot of props. He's not he's not messing around with his and give a lot of you know, you get deference or respect to these ballplayers the Lenny's like no way getting right in there. But that was back in the day to when you were Wrigley field. If you remember this cubs fan. You could just go to the chain link fence that was right outside where they parked their cars and was right on. I think they had a lot of that's still where the cubs. I don't even think that lot existing remember that little small law that was right next to Wrigley field on the inside. And that's where you go with the chain link, and you would go and you just wait for the players to get in their rides. Right. And that's what you could tell who was a who was cool and who wasn't right? The your. I hate to. I hate to make this all about rhino for rhino was one of the guys have gotten his car did not stop crew after an eighty four game or eighty five now Thad Bosley. He's gonna stop. He's going to sign Leon Durham he's going to sign maybe Gary woods is gonna sign. Right. But you're not gonna like the Sandberg's and maybe the. We are getting in their Mercedes. I don't have time for this. Let's too bad. I mean, again, I could understand it. Let's say they were a bunch of kids at the chain link outside the WGN radios space and you play and we did the extension seven twenty every single night. And every night you came out there a bunch of kids Pete Pete Pete. He'd be like all right. Certain point. I just want to get my car. I gotta get home. I got to fight this traffic. I'll get you tomorrow. Right. And then that stays with a kid forever. Does we're talking about it years later. I wonder if that's still a I wonder if it's still a case do white socks. And I'm sure it is. We're just now that we're older cubs players like a havi bias or yawn. Moncada? Do they go out and do suburban gyms and people snake or the or the Orleans Orland park mall and people sneak around to get their signatures. Do right? They have to you. See it on the news when they're giving out turkeys and stuff like that. But that's all photo ops and press releases, but are there moments where like, you know, someone's someone? Pays them essentially out there and sign autographs accent? I don't think it was. I don't think it was a book out. I mean, it was just sitting there at a desk. I think and you know, you'd bring jersey or go or something. Right. So yes, I mean, it's not like but three one nine eight one seventy two hundred if the last two years since the cubs won the World Series. And I just want me in the last two years new players. If you have been somewhere where Kris Bryant is sitting in in the in the Antioch. Jim. You know? Rizzo is is out at Naperville north or something like that. I'm not sure they are. I'm sure I'm sure the lines will lineup saying. Yeah. Of course, it was Ben zone over as was out at Hershey high school. You know, I think major league baseball does such a good job though. And I all professional sports that bears do it too. I think they're so involved in the community their community relations department where they're out or maybe they don't have to do. They do other things where they don't have to sit in society autograph doing like doing community service work or a little like your post on Facebook. Go to school, you know, and like plano toss a ball with a, you know, a bunch of kids, but I just want to know if that's if they're doing it the old school way, if that's something, you know, we were just talking about the the future of advertising is there a future of baseball cards signing, and we're not thinking about I wanna know three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred is hobby bias busy popping out to you know, Stevenson, high school, you know. Are you getting Wilson contrarius over at Maine Maine east? Naven highschool cubs players. Yeah. Seven seven three says back in the day. You had Ernie in Hundley. Ferguson jenkins. They were all signing autographs six three oh says you're so right. It's something you never forget. When when you get stood up by a ball player. That's true. Although again, I I get it. I don't know why. I get it. But I get right. Maybe not based on this -sarily, but yummies online yummy. What do you think? What do you got for autograph? So I got an autograph from Corey Crawford behind the back of the thing of the metrics worm store and they for. I was going to get it got it. That's all you have to do it. Thank you very much. That's perfect. The great story. That's a great story. Cut him there. Just because the echo. But. Yeah, that's what I wanna hear. I wanna hear when you have to sneak into the back door. The mattress firm. Corey crawford. Autograph? I love that story. Three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred after every game the state for seven after every game every game Keith Moreland stood against the wall at Sheffield and wave land and signed autographs for the kids. So it's that's where the cars were essentially on the I actually on the other side. So maybe he's but did he sign for every kid at some point Keith Moreland gotta get home. And there's probably one kid or a few kids that were there that there's some right? Yeah. There's some bad blood. There is some zonked. Haters out there right now, eight Keith morning sign my jacket. I came by to sign a jacket. I remember seeing flukey Stokes at the Dixie square mall and Harvey. I got his autograph. I'll be the first to say, I don't know who that is who's flukey Stokes. I'm gonna look that up. We'll take a break. We'll look at flukey Stokes is. We got some people on the line. Stay in line will continue this threat. I like this threat until Chris gets here. Have you have you in the last two to three years had any of the current baseball players? And you heard yummy talk about Corey Crawford. I'll extend it to the bulls for the Blackhawks or even the bears. Have you been to a spot where there signing autographs in store, whatever? And you got a chance to get an autograph. I want to know if.

Dave Lindy is the president of aileron communications and a regular contributor here. WGN radio as well as C LTV. We also have Ken Jacob Bosque. Who is a crisis communications expert? I don't even know how you're not working for Plummer nonsol-. Dave. Dave's kids. So what were going to say was that? Yes. We actually had a listener who texted us when we're talking about throwing the boiling water into the air. She was on her way or was at the emergency room with her teenage son who had done these burns. And obviously everything was okay because I didn't want my children to get burned with. With or. Outstanding. I mean. To the wind takes it not. So the wind blows on you as well. That's that brings back. But I don't want to go into. But. Yeah. The win thing. Yeah. Now. It definitely is. I will say this. I promise I'm gonna hold my curiosity. I will not ask any follow up questions on that. We don't want any vapor. I mean there is. And there is there are. Those dubs. Sucks. Five days away from how? For more results for this. Four Roger Roger would know because he's been posting on a daily basis. I was so excited she Keith Moreland wonderful photos of players in the number of days until spring in forty four minutes the following Chicago. I believe Chicago surprise us. Well, I will. Oh, well, he's no longer a cub. Everybody loved him. When he was here. A lot of women the who was number two. I'm not saying Sanderson. No, they loved them. What's his name? Oh, goodness. You'll have to wait forty. What is it forty four minutes? Palmera was it. What are you asking me? I just said I'm not gonna put love, Scott, Sanderson. I will say this. I'm googling farting in polar trash, go ahead. Sean Dunston wasn't number twelve on Schwab, the show on a meter wanna meet again, you know, who did I was twelve. I can't remember. My search results are ridiculous Elliott. Oh, by the way since talking about letting gas. Yeah, go you saw the story about the trolls at universal. Yes. That. Yes. And have you seen the video? Yes. Delightful. I'm not familiar with the troll movie has no we're talking about my kit. My grandkids love it. They were all over when I told them, and I showed him the video. They didn't think there was like an actual person yet rolled. No. But now, I've got this thing in my head. I'm picturing, and I just trying to I'm trying to wipe it out. I. I just can't get rid of also wiping it out. Oh about those cubs. This attributing thing on Bill Daley. My God in heaven a nine hundred years ago told me not to bring it up. It really. Honestly, really got me upset. I'm a dog. Issue out of something that I mean, Ron Santo was playing third. Billy Williams is playing right field for the cubs, for God's sakes, Wilbur? Wilbur wood was twenty four and twenty that year in started both games of a doubleheader last pitcher in the twentieth century to do that, by the way. That's how Bill Daley should deflect. Right. Frank Robinson hit twenty home runs for the California Angels. He died yesterday age eighty three. So you thought that we should ignore Cavanaugh and that the Ralph Northam things irrelevant and the the Fairfax things are relevant because it was a long time ago. This is like Henry Henry Hyde with his youthful indiscretion. God. Oh, come on. Raised raised in the corrupt environment of that family. Break. I'm going to have these just fight off the new.

"Back in one thousand nine hundred three Chicago Cubs were known for two things debut baseball. And losing maybe the one of the crappiest franchises in baseball. For decades. The teams fiery new manager Lee Elia was desperate to turn things around Lilia. Yes, sir. Eighty three ten start out too. Good. It was a Friday afternoon kind of a dreary day on April twenty nine the cubs. Played the dodgers just nine thousand three hundred and ninety one on hand at Wrigley. And we lose on a lease Smith wild pitch. I don't think he's ever throwing a wild pitch before in his life. So we're five and fourteen and we're walking off the field. And all of a sudden, somebody said something, I know what it was. I'm not going to repeat it to Keith Moreland Moreland and Larry Bowa were hearing it from some bozos along the third base line. And they threw beer out of McCollum names or a fiery son of a gun and Moreland who wouldn't take crap off anybody jumped the tarp. We get in the stands in throwing punches. So I get up and pull on one guy off, and then the cops came, and they broke it up. And we went inside wasn't really in a good mood at that moment. This was the mother of all rants, my brothers. And I can recite the entire thing. It is gospel in our family. There was a flash point the dear the lovable loser. Stick was starting to wear thin really sort of summed up what the cubs were like at that time. There were just in a whole that they felt like they could never get off. But I want you to really understand this 'cause I just turned eighty I don't how long. I meant the people that we were in the fight with not the beautiful people that come out to the ballpark every day. Where else do you find better sans? Then in Chicago. Real..

He really put a lot into it. A lot of flick of the wrist. Before he did the coin flip. You looked at the crowd and kind of did like the are. You not impressed on here. Gosh almighty. She said today again he was sitting like front row on the fifth yard line. I was thinking God almighty this. The secret service really want him out there in the open let I gotta figure he has eight thousand army navy guys around him. I think you'll be protected as commander in chief. He rules over those guys. So right now, it's the army over navy ten to seven in a very exciting. And coming up a little later on the show. We're going to talk about the Heisman Trophy because it is Heisman selection night. We'll talk about pro football. We'll talk about the new XFL football league. We'll talk about the F F L the freedom football league Ricky Woody USFL coming back to maybe. So also a special visit with former Longhorn Nate your date now with the NFL network. The former green beret, Texas Longhorn in Seattle Seahawk. He's got a new series called indivisible. And he told me yesterday. It's sort of like an Anthony bourdain type show where he goes visits people with special stories about social Justice. So that'll be great to talk. With nate. Also high school football today. Lake Travis guests continues to Rolex powerhouse. They are lake Travis defeated judging today thirty eight twenty one that made the Cavaliers will play either galena park north shore or cypress Fairbanks next week. That's very cool. Hey carter. And this is this is no fluff. This is no blowing smoke. Do you? Try to speak up people. He may be the best coach in in the area. Yeah. The state he really high school coach this is a guy who I think could make that leap to college football easily because this is an organized well oiled machine much like West Lake is. But quite frankly, they're playing at a better level than weights Westlake is. And I believe. Even though Westlake beat them this year. But I think a year and a year out. Hey Carter is an excellent football coach. Yeah. They just grew them out there. I don't know what it is what they put in the water. But they groom those kids, and they are a will you said well oiled machines have good luck. All this Cavalier's out there. Yeah. Good lying at home and west like place tonight in that game is going to be on TV. Oh rats was watching Roger Wallace in our friend Keith Moreland this afternoon on KABC radio on TV. Okay. As you said, no Longhorn football today. Longhorns? Preparing for the Georgia BULLDOGS excited, you get your reservation, you got everything lined up. Yeah. Gut feeling since we last talked because when we last talked we knew it was going to be Georgia. Official. Your thoughts on that Georgia Texas game on January first. Yeah. It could go one of two ways either it's going to be an unbelievable game. And I think Texas might be able to pull it off or Georgia comes in mad looking to prove something, and they could steamroll Texas. If if Texas gets a mad Georgia team it's all over because those those guys they can overwhelm Texas offensive line. They could overwhelm the defensive backs. From is an incredible quarterback. They have their running back with Holyfield, son. I'm very worried the game for Texas. But I think Texas they also have something to prove. I think they're little bag. I think they're embarrassed the way the big twelve championship went and like Sam Allender said he's he is a man on a mission now. So it really I go every other day, I'm kind of my mind switches, but right, I'm mystic. I think you bring up a great point. And I think you're exactly right. It depends. What Georgia team shows up? If it's got to be the Georgia teen that's mad. That's still disappointed that make them wanna point. It could be a long night for the longhorns. But if the George. Team where they're saying. Hey, man, we've enjoyed the Sugar Bowl. This is a big reward. It's texas. They've lost four games. It doesn't mean that much to them. It could be good for Texas, Texas, quite frankly so much more to play for. Oh, absolutely. Because if I know Tom Tom hermit like, I know Tom Herman. He's going to model this game after it, and he will call it the first game of twenty nine hundred which it will be. But maybe the first first game of the season for protects Linney two things one, Texas and George are playing each other and not too distant future. So there's that. But also, you know, Georgia on their side. They're proven that they belong in the playoffs. Yeah. They're playing to show the world that they deserve to be in that final four. They're embarrassed. They're mad. They really they have a lot to prove to it is so ironic man, how we've been here dirties before the Longhorn games. And after games watching other gauging just inches and moments that could have changed the whole playoff picture. I remember sitting right? Here when Oklahoma state went for the two. Yep. Against and didn't get it. We were sitting there last week watching Georgia run a fake punt. And it doesn't come through. If those plays go good for Georgia. They're on the play offs. And if it goes bad for Oklahoma. They're not in the playoffs. Yep. So it's it's just a matter of plays and seconds. I mean, it is a Georgia team that almost beat Alabama. So in Texas and Alabama are a little different. But I think it's going to be a great game. Really good Georgia team. It'll be a fun atmosphere going to New Orleans playing in the Sugar Bowl it. It'll be fun. But it's did all depends on what Georgia team shows up. Well, we had a word today. Speaking about another big twelve team West Virginia quarterback will Grier says he skipping the boat. I hate it. I hate I hate this. I hate the way the college football is going these players quitting on their teams. Because that's what they're doing. They're quitting on their teams choosing themselves over the Borgen. Well, he is from a human standpoint, I understand why they don't want to risk their injury when they have an NFL career ahead of them. But you do it for your brothers on the team. And I'd like to talk to Nate boy about that. Because I feel like as a teammate, and you see your best player saying, you know, guys. I'm done. That's gotta make the mad. Let's got you know, I hate to sound like high school, Harry. But I think you're exactly right because West Virginia has made an investment in will Greer over these years. He was a transfer from Florida they walk with open arms. They've done a lot for the guy. The Ganesha wife had a baby they felt along that. And I would say will you go play in that game. And will you go play the first quarter to just play a quarter at the very least just show your face Celtel? Dana coach I want to play the first quarter now because I want to get ready for the draft. I'm not going to get hurt do that. Because it does leave a sour sour taste in fans. Fans.

"It's, like, a bit infomercial every day one like the other day I, mean, yesterday it's the game like. Oh like talking about using your, butts, kicked by eight, run earned run average Cy Young award. wanna hear positive like. You just got your butts kicked by the not yet but Matt Matt let me ask you this what does that matter me other than for us to? Talk about a kick around and decide whether we. Like Gaber not what is what does it does it does Well look like I'm frustrated already I I gotta stop watching the? Press conference That's what I guess I. Gotta do I can't, watch them afterwards like. It's just drives me even nuttier like when you're frustrated I'm a huge fan I. Watch every game every, night and it's, just crazy like to deal with. It but like. Last week two weeks ago like. Order things were calling up. You, were. Happy we're going to the World Series we were playing the. More Yep Yep that was the Marlins and we shouldn't do the same thing we did the Marlins to the. Best and that's a horrible in the Marlins. Just the Marlins were just playing well recently. In, appreciate it, met the Marlins. You, just beaten up on the the NATs It seems annoying the watch Entertaining to watch on, TV even though we do and there's not a lot of things to talk about other than the manager Cape Kappler's is he's. The quarterback of this. Team he's the Donovan McNabb he's the only thing that you can really talk about won't. Even a semi regular basis what? Are, you gonna. Talk about. Oh, Deuba Herrero ducal. Too yeah Good talk about him. And how frustrated he can be? At, times are. We are. We I say we? I'm just saying. Collectively. As we are the marks and. Reshow are we still produce here I'm pro doable okay I, didn't know I'm, produce Here's the thing they know? You get to a point where the productivity. You have to, look yourself in the, mirror and say can I afford to continue to put him out? There I know. We're. Trying to get them together You're in a. Pennant race so you're half a game out of the division. Lead if putting Roman. Quinn in for a couple of games during the week instead of Dubreuil helps your team then you do it, in one thousand nine hundred eighty Pete Rose wasn't the? Started down the stretch for the Phillies now Keith Moreland was getting the starts because. Pete Rose was struggling to keep more than was high so. Yeah Guys with, with much better credentials than Oduber Harare have lost playing time because, they weren't being productive down the stretch and that's where I am. Right now going to take them out and this is why it's hard for fans to buy completely in and I know we've tried our best and as far as trying to get fans. To see what we've seen time to time with his team and not. That they are World Series. Teams I know at time they going to two or three game win streak, you get ahead of yourself. But the bottom line is they are a good baseball team that's exceeding expectations, but they have their. Limits they have their limits and unfortunately for the Phillies when it comes. To, drawing people went to him it's those inconsistencies that won't allow people to buy in all the. Way, yeah It's like okay we'll sit, back is if they start. To do something spectacular yeah we'll jump on but I don't expect them to, the way they win. Games is in isn't exciting and then you go through a series like. This Yeah, yeah which it dude I'm telling you I saw coming from. From, a mile away, I see the series coming in this is what this. Is what this team is, at this point Stuart northeast Philly hi stew stew How, you doing I'm gonna make. An analogy here I don't know, if you've, ever. Seen the musical the music man Riber types a, big fan no Robert Preston comes to river city any tell the? Parents Get these kids play. Bombs by thinking Bronx In other words he was a con artist Kappler in he's telling the fans folks just. Think it will, win the pennant no fundamentals I wanna call a particular place you're censured right before the all-star break Hit a three two lead in the game and they admit on second and third and king we came up or. He had to? Do with. No outs the ball to the. Right side you know what he. Failed the Phillies won the, game anyway 'cause released release pitching hills up but this lack of fundamentals And the time that if. You think you're? Win it. Is to be the Philly down. For I this is gonna lose. Off four games in Washington I'm glad you're be positive about the team so So hold on so so you're you're basing the evidence you giving me the that gave Kappler and gets Kate. Gave Kappler is. A something by the all-star break we're Scott King didn't move the runner along by. Heini it to the. Right side of the infield you got for. Me Yes because it's addictive of a trend there not slipping fundamentals on this. Plane but hold on Hugo rare, it's still in there is it nobody's called to tip is the trend of baseball in, general, or, is the. Trend of of this team where? You're, talking about a first year manager like yes should should am I happy with them defensively no of course not is everything fall the manager know at some point when you get to when you get to the majors aren't to fundamental supposed to be learned when? You're, coming up through the minors and then into the majors and just reinforced, in the majors Yeah Ideally but here's where I think you have to include the manager in here because it was the managers idea to play some of these guys in positions they just aren't comfortable playing. In Right I think it's only fair if if we, we can't just give gave credit when things go well and then, say when things, don't go wells fall. Is not as fault right so agree, again. And I like we gave capillaries doing but I don't know what the hell's going on with the defense like EROs vacuous like they're not good he. Doesn't seem bothered by it all Not not in the least I. Kinda, is. What it is right right it's, the defense's, kind of like oh yeah. We'll get him next time And that's that that is maddening. But, I. Mean I let me let me, just try, to phrase it this way Hold. On real quick. Yeah which makes. It even more, mazing that their twelve games over five hundred but that's my point Look, at the standings right like why are we why is everybody so negative. About this team why Constant negatively we call earlier why is it the only thing that people have to say about his gay cap, cod artists in Calgary didn't, didn't? Move the ball runner? Along the all star break their Gabe forty? Five Well that was, yeah Yes. And the music man that was the other.
