"For more. It wasn't long after the railway shows before the who exploded. The smashing of instruments was now a patented part of their performances. But it wasn't a gimmick. It was a true violent expression of eggs and it took nothing away from the whose prowess in the studio. The band banged out a quick set of electric teenage anthems. I can't explain anyway anyhow. Anywhere in my generation all took teenagers throughout the u k by the throat. Turn them upside down and shook the change out of their trousers. Like the young street toughs. They were things they do. Look awful cold. hope. I die before i get old. Success came quick and was the perfect greece for the band members. Rough manic behavior drinking became sport. It was the mid sixties and it was the music business so drugs. Of course were everywhere and the entire band partook. Keith moon went on it with the special vigor. Doing drugs drinking booze. It was a test of will for keith. Imbibing men partying and partying men having fun and having fun well. Wasn't that what this is all about. Wasn't that why he was in the business to have a good time to not have responsibilities. I mean other than entertaining people which he seemed genetically inclined more than anyone else to do. His energy was manic. he never stopped entertaining onstage offstage. It didn't matter off the stage. He'd arrange any number of pranks practical jokes. Improvise bits to get friends to laugh. Wiring the opening bands drum kit with explosives check driving your rolls royce through downtown and blasting fake public service announcements detailing nonexistent threats through a bullhorn impending title ways. Everyone leave town now. Dangerous snake slithering through the streets. You must evacuate. The government is relocating the country's entire immigrant population to the south side of your town. Lock your doors. Wicked appearing in court dressed in full nazi regalia to settle a beef with neighbor. Steve mcqueen. No joke it happened. Look it up and keith pulled. The ship constantly and he was hilarious. He was the type of funny that made you buckle over made Run out of your nose mayor. John hurt from laughing so much and he literally never stopped his ongoing quest to make friends actually died. Laughing was so constant that they begged him to quit and when he did it when he couldn't they'd inevitably end up asking themselves if he was all right in the head and when they come up short of an answer their next questions would be. How long can this guy keep this up. How long can this guy keep living this way. The drug use was only part of it. Sure the drugs fueled the manic behavior but it was more about his hype level. It was hardwired to eleven. Plus ten charisma. How does living that loud not take. Its toll getting keith. To slowdown was like asking shooting star. Downshift to save energy. "He couldn't just keep time. That was what drummers did keith moon wasn't drummer. he was a deconstructionist's the drums were as chosen instrument of destruction and his band. The who we're using that destructive behavior to capitalize on england's newest mod craze and right now while bashing away wildly it is oyster pearl. Ludwig kit keith. Moon was making the mods. Happy you couldn't tell by the perpetual powered on their faces or by the fact that they were dancing with their heads down of course moving their arms like stone frankenstein's to the beep on the dancefloor. The mods were smartly dressed. Teenagers in tight tailored trousers and winkle picker shoes who's antisocial. Behavior was matched only by their love of black american rb music and their mods because they saw themselves as modernise the first british teenagers since the end of world. War two. they'd had it with the scruffy uptight. Classes social norms. That had handcuffed their parents emotionally and culturally. The old world could piss off. It was nineteen sixty four and this is the modern world. The old rules didn't apply. Which is why keith moon in this. Fuck all postmodern approach to drumming appeal to the box. He was a musical deconstructionist's keith. Moon didn't just play the beat as rock drummers before him had on the drums he played the guitar. Riff his lanky bandmate pete. Townsend was savagely beating out of his rickenbach over on the drums. He played the baseline for his dapper. Oxfam bass player. John n whistle that he was warping out of his base. And when keith moon became bored with those two. He focused on the singer. The street tough from shepherd's bush with a chip on his shoulder. Roger daltry keith. Match the anger rodgers vocals. Note for note. Hit for him on his kit. It was as if his bandmates pulled him aside before each show. And we're like Hey keith we've been talking and You know we don't think you're very good man. You don't really play with enough heart. And so as a result keys would then go ape shit behind his kit in an effort to prove them all wrong. He's a fucking jet engine with octopus arms. And like i said the mods loved him and they love this band to the who exciting violent even just like the mods the ban were also pent up teenagers ready for tussle dressed rate for beach fight looking for any excuse to bust the old world in the face. That's what the first beach fights nine. Nineteen sixty four. We're all about the british press thought teenaged hooligans. We're about to take over the country but really it was just a bunch of mods out of school on holiday or to getting into it with the rockers. The rockers were the antithesis of the mods leather jacket clad pompadour. Who were stuck on james dean marlon brando old world. Yesterday they rode motorcycles. Fuck that working class nonsense. Scooters wore parkas there were the youthful smart set in despite their peacocking carnaby street suit wearing ways. They weren't averse to cracking a rocker in the mouth of the fistful rolled up coins. Violence was the ultimate rebellion. The ultimate fuck you to the previous generation so when they heard about a band whose drummer played like a wild boar and he and who destroyed their instruments on stage they were sold the railway hotel london nineteen sixty four. A dank hole in the wall more basement than proper club. The who dressed to kill ron stage barreling through smokey robinson the miracles. I gotta dance to keep crying. But with none of the motown sheen. At the railway under the guidance in the who song was raw dirty mean the singer dressed head to toe in way jeans and cruise sweater wrap around blackflies sunglass leaned into the mike menace the basis. Tall brooding is surveying the crowd was content casually anchored the song the drummer. His big is to moons sitting impatiently behind his kit. Like a jack in a box about to explode in the guitar player wearing guitar up high like an ascott jerking about in a way that made the mods and the audience question whether or not he was actually all right in the head the four of them were impossibly cool and they sounded at the time better than any band on the planet in the middle of a song. Pete the guitar player in an over excited moment accidentally bashed the head of his guitar. Low ceiling above the stage. The neck on the guitar snapped and the mods laughed p picked up his backup guitar without missing a beat and played it off like it was meant to happen beyond cool word quickly spread around london about ahmad band. That was fresh fucks to give and the following week. A larger crowd gathered at the railway. For the whose next show. Pete knew what the crowd was therefore and refused to give them what they want. Keith on the other hand displeased with disappointed crowds. Tepid response to their performance booted his kick drum across the stage. At the end of the set. Here is this what you came for a fucking side show. We'll take this audience loved it. Who were hooligans them. So the next week when they showed up in even larger numbers in anticipation of more onstage shenanigans. Townsend lost it at the climax of the band set. He grabbed his rickenbacker by the neck and smashed against the stage when the body of that guitar failed to break off clean peak grabbed neck tighter inspire himself around bringing what was left to the guitar flailing into his amplifier behind him. That did the guitar once an instrument. Now a thing of violence toast. The audience was stunned. And so is the band keith. Not to be done rose up out of his seat behind his kit and kicked his base germ across the stage them. The tom's standing legs spread. He played a fast war crescendo sendo on his symbols before tossing them aside to who then left.

"Of all time ever and i feel such a kinship with keith moon. Because you know you you mr. Hickey didn't know me growing up through unionism. A more responsible adult. Tj the deuce on the other hand new is a child. And i think that you can agree that Keith moon is a good representation of who i was growing up your spirit animal. Yes i think like. I said last week. We kind of pick the drummer that sort of reflect who were as people because will is clearly the smartest of all three of us and the wilkes bokan. Yes well i i I'm happy with my big. I'll even fat. I love my pick. Yeah i think we're all happy with our respective. Yes and and tj pretty. Sure you have pooped in. Someone's shoe before i don't see that as being in your business which i check out the nike before you slotted home but i'm telling you i don't see how that's your business he's talking to you honey. I don't wear nike. i wear nikes did you. Did you poop in my husband's shoe. You yellow in los angeles. And i'm in packet asafter carolina so that would actually be pretty difficult name immaculate. I would have to call him congratulate you if you actually pulled out all right i was gonna say i think pretty much would just have to give me a hat too. I would just have to salute salute the effort if i was able to pull off smile. But it's so interesting if you look at the commentary that they provided with us. And how you know you sort of era of drummers. And they went to charlie watson and rondo stars. The keeping the beat. If you look at drummers we've covered you know peered bombing mood. These guys are totally away from that. They were like we're not to do that. We're going to. We're not going to settle for just blend into the background right. Yeah and the became their own voice in the bands that they were in they. Consequently they are probably the three most loved drummers. I can think of you've grown. I'll sit here and argue for charlie watts being great drummer all day long for sure. He's he's fantastic. Every cool groove that has ever been set in a rolling stone song. That's charlie so that you you can't that there's no way you could ever and the drumming honky woman is good. There's no way you can downgrade anything. He's ever done. But i'm just gonna say who do you want to be liked if you're a drummer. You don't wanna be guy. That guy anonymously sets the bed. You wanna be keith. Moon or john bonham or that. Those are the three guys pretty much. I wanna be kikkan and the thing the only thing with with moon you as. We've now that. I've had time to kind of soak in what you've shared with us over two episodes of this immensely talented obviously very different. Obviously because he's not it was never his intention to just Yeah i'm just gonna. I'm just gonna try to play with john here and we'll just we'll just set the groove and let you know pete and adultery. Sean it's like no. I'm going to be really loud. i'm going to be up at the front. And i'm gonna play everywhere but where john is playing can do it. And that's That's how it's how i'm going to roll and it's it's obviously extremely different than almost anybody else has ever done it and i will say like it's but but i'm gonna tell you as as much as i enjoyed a lot of the antics that you dug up and shared with us blowing up the universally funny if you flush lit dynamite down a shedder. I don't want anybody says that's hilarious. That's incredibly funny. And i loved it. There's a lot of stuff that you share with us about him. That's not funny it's disturbing. It's a mix of sad and disturbing. Some of the things are not the. It's not the way the the wacky antics that you think about with him and bonham a lot of that stuff was really the guy the guy had problems he had had a legitimate real issues near. Well yeah and the thing is. I tried to do a mix of music and antics and the thing is a lot of times people unless they're in the music community will go. Oh yeah he was. The one that blew up toilets will yeah. He was also the one that did driving line on babo riley like people tend to lean toward his antics more than his music will. And you wanna go. No no no he was. He was an incredible drummer. it was an incredible drummer. But but i'm not. I don't i don't necessarily mean the dakata me between antics music. I'm talking about the dakata. Me between wacky fun antics that make you laugh. And sending people to try to beat up or killed like lavigne's dating his ex wise. I'm talking about you said broke. His broke his wife's does on three occasions and tried to cut down a bathroom door with a frequent nice. Where she was at lot. Yourself ended to to protect herself from him. That's not funny. There's nothing funny about that. I'm glad that that's an and it started so early. A lot of these things that you were talking about. It's almost like it was ingrained in like legitimately have had problems real problem. Yeah yeah trouble as the classic troubled artist type. Yeah this is. I think the first one where we've talked about. We're an artist. Be it an accident. I we know it wasn't intentional. But he is the first artists that has been involved in someone else's death. Yeah i think that's the first time in. it's scary. That he put. He put himself in that situation. Because if i walk into a bar and there are skinheads. I'm going to walk out of that. I'm just gonna leave. Yeah find somewhere else to drink exerting so i mean an and that haunted him the rest of his life. Do you know they're just when you you look at. It's almost like some of the silly antics are a way of dealing with some of the very real strife he was dealing with internally on. No i was just gonna to because much much as i love his music and as innovative as he was in his different as he was despondent. As it is to you know. Flush cherry bombs donna donna commode and to drive a car into a poll. It's kinda hard for me to get to to summon much sympathy or respect for somebody who beat his wife up. I can't i. That's that's a hard. I'd say i wasn't aware of that before. We started doing this and that was not. That's not it that that as a as a as a person that that diminishes my respect for him. And that's that's honestly that i want to with this podcast. All it's not gonna be blue aussie. I know we're almost eighty or ninety episodes end. But it's not gonna always be like glitz glamour and gloss. There are dark sides to people and there are things that people deal with that. And i'm not going to go and dig up something that is conjecture these come from other people in.

"So much going on. You didn't know where to look at and his music is just so incredibly freddie mercury. Ask that i. I just i my happy spot. And that was like my happy moment and i loved so some sorta like the time cousin i went and saw van halen raft with graduated from high school. Probably yeah and started and started a riot in the parking lot but i don't know that the statue of limitations is up on that yet so we're not gonna say anything we'll probably just go just to keep my now. During the opening day of the band's march nineteen seventy six. Uso tour at boston garden moon. Pass out on his drum kit after two numbers and then that show is actually rescheduled. The next evening moon systematically destroyed everything in his hotel room cutting himself in the process and in passing out he not have a drum tech or somebody that they brought along for these sorts of situations because the same life happening pretty frequently. I you know like look everybody. Here's keith and he's gonna impasse out now and then you know. Jimmy's gonna come up and play show or whatever. Yeah they're just. There's some artists out there that take care of their their bodies and their instruments on the day of i know celine. Dion doesn't speak the entire day that she has a concert. And i'm wondering how that works now that you know. She has a she had a residency in vegas. Which would be every day. You play a concert. But he'd known didn't do that he didn't take care of himself. Well i mean. I just i just wonder why certain point the who didn't bring along either a backup draco a basic basically like a like a second tamer needed like frank right. Come off the bench and yeah well. He was discovered by his manager. Who took him to the hospital telling him. I'm going to get the doctor to get you a nice fit so we can get you back in two days because i want to break your job right now. You have been around so many times. i'm not having any more. The doctors told bill which was their manager that had he not intervened. He might have likely bled to death. Because you know the centers with with everything insists. His blood was really thin at that he could absorb a suggested. This point that daltry and hit whistle seriously considered firing moon but they decided that doing that would actually make his life worse. Mean he's on a very destructive path on this. Yeah there's kind of the conundrum afford to do about it. Do you wake him up by firing him kicking him out of the band or with that. Send him spiraling. You know you're almost lives everybody else kind of walking on eggshells a little bit because you don't know how to handle it. Well yeah you know. Do you let this disruptive for stay in the band and of hope for the best. When i'm not saying the rest of the ban had their stuff together but they were at least able through their shows at the time. You know she'll work. I mean at this is everybody's on drugs. We make jokes about it. But honestly like you know when you have incredible fame and incredible power. Incredible notoriety people will just give you drugs. You don't even have to seek them out or buy them like they'll use that as a way to get into your circle actually a of because they want to be in your orbit i can. How can i get to be buddies with. Keith bonham. Or somebody like that. I try to give them some coke or some. You know i mean that's a it's a it's a it's a hate it but that that's that's a way to get in their circle at again their orbit a lot of times as to you kinda by your way in with drugs and stuff. Yeah in. Liz said that moon. And the who had research live peak in nineteen seventy five seventy six and at the end of the seventy six. Uso tour miami that august. The drummer delirious was treated in the hollywood memorial hospital eight days. The group was concerned that he'd be unable to complete the last leg of the tour which ended at the maple leaf gardens in toronto. Twenty of about tober moons last public. Show during the band's recording of sabbatical between nine hundred seventy six seventy eight moon gained considerable amount of weight. it's not like with bonham or or or whatever were they about to go on tour and they're rehearsing any is. It's there's a big gap between last show. He plays with them and when when he ultimately flashes. Yeah well what happens. Is they do this tour. And what i'm about to talk about is how they record their last album with keith. And what happens. Is you know they basically go to the band's a hey guys you're going to release this album. Let's start planning the tour and hounds in and it whistle. i think it's mainly townsend. Basically say. Look i i want to be with my family. I don't want a tour. I know we'd go out on. Tour is gonna destroy keys if we're here and now we didn't. We just do really good promotion for the album. I'm sure that the fans will understand and that's kind of what happened. So while he gained he gained a lot of weight because of the so by the time of the whose invitation only show at the state cinema on the fifteenth of december nineteen. Seventy seven for the kids are all right. Moon was visibly overweight and had difficulty sustaining a solid performance. So he is still doing performances. It's just not touring after recording. Who were you. Townsend refused to follow the album with a tour unless moon stop drinking. he said of moons playing didn't improve that he would be fired and daltry actually later denied threatening firing him but instead of that time the drummer was way out of control. So who are you. Is the eighth studio album by the who released on august. Eighteenth nineteen seventy eight by polidori records so already in the nineteen seventy a united kingdom at polydor records in the united kingdom and ncaa records in the united states and all of the album received reviews from critics who actually commercial success peaking. That album cried so good. Wanting oddly as keith goes out of control and the there's all this conflict and stuff the band the last couple albums because what quadrophenia is among the last handful they did. And who are you. Those those are a couple of my favorite's actually feel like when focused heave moon is a force. He is unstoppable. He is incredible. He is he is that i mean just watching. Perform it is. It is mesmerizing. Actually watch him performance so sad that this is you know this is kind of how it ended and it sounds like you saw at least reliable in the studio since the touring is where most issues are coming up. Because i think at this point you know. He is divorced from his first wife. Kim and mandy. So a hey. There's no wise nice way to say this. But now that he doesn't have that bother of having a wife and kid and his life. He's kind of free to do what he wants that way. That's when he met a net. And i feel like she kind of i'm not gonna say she had a control of him but i feel like there's a dynamic shift once. He started dating her so at this point he's not married in seventy eight. He's not married so he doesn't have that. That marriage thing hanging over his head like i was saying it had commercial success and it was peaking at number two on the us charts and number six on the uk charts. This is the last album to feature keith moon. As their drummer who actually died three weeks after it was released a while the ironic nature of the text not to be taken away was actually stenciled in on keys chair because what happened was they went to take the photo for the album and the photographer basically said she's everybody looks really good. He's keeps looks pudgy. Is there a way that we can kind of hide. That and also keith was not feeling well your answer. So he was having kind of an issue stay vertical so they put him in a chair which you know said not to be taken away which basically in like don't speak was like this stays on the studio but.

Yeah geez i hope it was entertaining i. I know i was entertained reading their stories that i couldn't even figure out where to put them so i guess i'll just say one right here. Just kinda in the episode at one point keep decided that the band needed a hit slash mascot so he bought a piranha and He would take it from venue to venue and one day. He put it in the bathtub and it died because the water got too cold. So that's sad. But he bought a piranha. Can we bought a flesh eating fish as a band. I know we've said this a couple of times before but what housekeeping actually entails. Is that we are going to be covering five or six artists. I forget how many it is five or six artists that you guys have requested throughout the years whether it was through email or on our the patriot on page or through our facebook page. You know emailing us as a great way and we will also be doing our in. Memorandum are into the year in memorandum episode. And after that we'll be taking a short break so that we can start because we have a draft coming up. Tj would you like to explain what the draft is. Yeah so next year. We're going to do Some episodes that are how would you put it. These are sort of heavy hitters. Yeah time great. We're gonna do some multi part episodes on some all time greats so we'll need a little time to prepare for those but the like we're going to the biggest names you can imagine who we haven't already done shows on and we're going to do three and four part episodes on these folks so l. d. structured a draft for us. We're like she gave us a big list. Pick from of some all time greats that we haven't done show on previously we. All we had three rounds. I think rounds was four rounds. We all of us are going to do multi part episodes all all four that we pick. It's going to be but it's going to be some really some really all tomor that we're gonna do episodes on next year multi part episodes and so l. d. structured draft for us where there was. Okay here's here's what you have to pick from and then we just went an order and we all pick people that were going to do. We have the opportunity to do a change up. i think we had an audible audible. And and i'm i'm going to have one already but we've already recorded the the draft episode and so i'm not sure when that will run but.

"Play it that way and it was very strange. So if you watch videos of keith moon playing it seems like this wild to purpose kind of thing happening. It's crazy but he just instinctively could his drunk bills in places that other people would never have thought to put them. Unfortunately guys we gotta stop the fun little antics right now to pay some bills so we will be right back after a break from our sponsors and we are going to be jumping back into keith moon right now. Thanks for that guys You helped the show up by helping our sponsors out. So the first song. That i'm gonna play is i can't explain. It was the band's second single release and the first under the who name because its predecessor zoot suit and then with the b side hundred face was released under the name. The high numbers. Yeah did didn't realize that. But i mean that's the who is so much better of a name. Banning just sucked in the past certain kind of bonkers for sixties. We already knew. Pete could write songs. And this is roger daltry quoting. We argue peak. Write songs but it never seen a necessity in those days to have your own stuff because there was a wealth of untapped music that we could get a hold up from america but then bands like the kinks started to make it and they were probably the biggest influence on us. They were certainly a huge influence on and he wrote. I can't explain as a direct copy but certainly derivative of the kinks music oxo all day and all like all day and all night. Oh all day and all night. Yeah so if you listen to what we're going to play it right now. If you listen to the song it does sound a little bit derivative but still. You're on the nice edge of a new genre of music. So i'm gonna play. I can't explain right now because it's such a.

"All holiday like they can't go to a holiday inn at all. Daughter tried daltry tried and they were like he. You're still technically pay hands. He used to blow toilets. We'll get there and You know sadly he ended up kind of you know blowing up himself. And he was inspiration for animals That's the rumor. I actually in my sixty two pages of trying to do. My research at did not actually find that. But but i feel like that's right. I've always heard that today. The cash that animal from the muppets wasn't fact based loosely. On on keeping mon. Yeah yeah so for all that keith. Moon was an amazing. Drummer voted by rolling stones. Raider poll the second greatest of all time behind john. Bottom john bonham. Yeah yes yep and just one uptake. I think ahead of nuclear nuclear keith. John moon came into the world at central middlesex hospital on acton lane in what was then the urban district of wells than the peak of the baby boom on august. Twenty third nineteen forty-six which by the way has been contested. People got it was forty. Six people got it was forty seven so before the nineteen ninety. Eight release of. Tony fletcher's dear boy. The life of keith moon moods moods day was actually Was presumed to be august. Twenty third nineteen forty seven. This date appeared in other Reliable sources thought that it was was nineteen forty seven but it. They backed him up. Nineteen forty six and that that actually included townsend himself his authorized biography. Before i get all the story of the who the increase in the incorrect date had been supplied high moon interviews before it was corrected by fletcher to nineteen forty-six. So keith moon. Who wished himself back a year. He was the son of alfred charles mechanic and kathleen winifred moon routes jobs as a cleaner made. He had two siblings. That were sisters. Linda and leslie and he was hyperactive by nature and a media mediocre student. We had a restless imagination and a particular fondness for the goon show and the end music. The good shows actually a radio comedy program which was originally produced by the bbc from nineteen fifty one and nineteen sixty. So it still comes up. I guess the that's what he would do. He would watch that and You would love it. And you would arise and presented to his family as his. His mother remembers keith from a very tinder. Three would sit at home. For long durations of time and listen to an old record player down about seventy eight records and he would listen to them over and over again. Shelves have mentioned how the him got. And listen to the bbc troop the goons which is what we were just talking about. He's within perform all the comedy parts at school following week during this time keith received very helpful input from his musical teachers at he had the ability to perform but he should not let himself get carried away as he had a tendency to show off during this phase in grammar school. He was quite a loner. Despite being a very active personality. I get that introverted extrovert in september. Nineteen fifty one. He studied at the local primary school. Barham which forum but it's it's bar ham out here a atra failure at his eleven plus examination. He took admission at the alberton. Secondary modern school and his art teacher said in a report. Okay now i'm going to say a word guys and please remember that. This is when it was accepted terminology because we're talking about nineteen fifty one so please understand. This is not. My words is exactly what she wrote. She said he is retarded. Artistically adana can other respects on active. She sounds dome. Yeah i mean. I'll tell you i'll tell you what this let me tell you what this kid's never going to be is an artist. He he he developed a fondness toward music. From a very young age he was greatly influenced music of elvis presley planned in nineteen fifty eight. He joined the seek debts and played the bugle to begin with and then he quit that and then he went to the trumpet and then he found that too complicated so he finally moved onto the bass drum complicated. He became crazy about drum seeing the movie drum crazy about the late great jazz drummer gene krupa. So here's jeanne group again. that's the times appearing. Yeah the and and john bonham remember the bottom said when he was a kid that gene krupa was god. Our ongoing theory is all drummers can trace back to either gene krupa or buddy rich or buddy rich hundred percent agree with that. Because you know if you're growing up in the forties and the fifties or whatever like keith moon did rock and roll wasn't quite here yet yeah right so there had to be something that hooked you and you've never watched any of the you think they're on youtube they have like. There's a drum who that was televised between kroupa and buddy rich own but see. That's that's the thing. I think that he liked about elvis treacly was. Elvis presley was the closest thing to rock and roll. That was around at that. Yup from you know. Elvis took the music and kind of made it his own at that point and so i think it was. Just you know this is. This is the closest thing we've got to the early days of rock and roll so when he saw drum crazy what he liked about. Gene kroupa was jiggling his basic style. He said he was inspired by gene. Krupa joe johns buddy rich with their double bass drum kit in there twirling their sticks and all the circus tricks that were included as the drummer on parade for his battalion in the sea cadets his feet would be loud enough for so many men to here and keep in step but he would decimate drum sets like we know this. I told people that. I was a drummer before i even had my own set. I was a mental just great. Here's a fun fact parked there. You go thank you in his time before joining the who had roughly twenty jobs and he was fired from every single one of them while they work. That was going to say you have to be a special brand of lazy insane. or something. i mean departed from twenty. You got fired from twenty jaw. Tuesday zero to twenty. I can't even get twenty jobs. I might have join jobs in my whole life. Maybe probably not it now. I don't think i'll okay. Let me ask you a question. Do you think my casting counts as one job or as like seventy five job. Yeah i think it's one job. Okay now maybe less than twenty. yeah. I think i've had listened. Warning is six seventeen point..

"Along with me for the ride is will the thrill and t j to produce. Can we guys no longer even say hello. Just opened up beer. That's a very fine. That come from. That is a lot of that. So much is how it is done. That's that's a warm greeting. That's how you class beloved one to your bosom. We missed you last week. What happened and this has a well what happened was we recorded an episode on monday night and we did great episode. It was the greatest podcast has ever been. They went to go. edited tuesday. And it no longer existed. So we're going to rerecord wednesday and my phone crap. Dial and it didn't work so hooked up wifi. Figured we could do it that way because we there's a by coastal production here. I'm in south. Carolina there in los angeles and my wife crashed tech all the tech problems as week. Well okay i can actually take this one step further so you guys into zone and you did a great job but i hate i missed it but okay so then i go to record another podcast on friday. A sports related one and as per usual. I'm i'm more the talent dirty. My hands with the technical end of things mainly because i don't mainly because i don't know so so my friend james was was doing reporting. We got thirty minutes into it and he said hey nothing which has been tight. I like what in the crowd. Go figure that in in in twenty twenty in a weakness features friday the thirteenth. That's strange and unfortunate. Things happen. The thirteenth was your birthday. So how's my birthday. Thank you old you are. I mean i. I mean your mashed corn old. Yes pretty much. i'm. I'm coffee. Hardee's old What is the sundown breakfast or the sun. Sundown special as we'll be whatever. Yes i'm a i'm a. I'm shout at the clouds old. Get off my lawn old. I'm so old that. When i was in grade school there was no such thing as history was called now. I don't i mean. I a strong beer. Because as you get older your taste buds really just there. They really they really the really go to pot. Yes i'm enjoying a winner warmer which means there's a lot of booze in it. It's scalp to below from new belgium. That's this year correct. It's an english is an english bidder. That's not actually bitter. Ooh lovely floral tiny notes. And that i mentioned that has got a lot of boozing. It did so this is gonna be a my contributions might be might be pretty minimal. Bound for greatness okay. I'm gonna say this doing this research. I feel like there is a strong chance then. I am the reincarnated form of keith moon. I like this idea. We should for further. Yeah so this is so we. We're we're wrapping up a three part series heroin Drummers we did john bonham who is who was crazy and very talented. But i mean he drove motorcycles down. Hallways ladies shoes. He charging that he would drink. He would drink twenty black russians at a sitting. He machar drove drove wasn't he. He drove a bmw. Or a rolls royce through the dealership window because the salesman oi them you know then then we did last week. Neil evert goes by the name the professor and and read that's very out because they're on russia's almost like it's almost nerd rock their scholarly. Also my love him. But i mean i thought it was so funny that you guys are talking about neil saying oh no we you know we. We partied sometimes. And it's like no you read. You read a book you read. You read the fountainhead. For the ten th time you visited museums and art galleries on right out. So now we kind of go back how we started. We have kind of a nutjob sandwich here. I mean we're today if you guys don't know are going to be talking about moon the loon heath known but but there is a link up because pure actually cited both john bonham and keith moon as two of his main influence. Actually there's more of that because keith moon was instrumental in led zeppelin. So we're gonna get. It was yes he was and he he in baltimore friends to if i if i remember correctly so yeah i mean. He had a lot of very odd relationships. You imagine i'm already with those two my god. Yeah it's called world war. Three in the fires are still burning to this day. I was gonna say anybody who would climb that. They remember partying with keith. Moon and john bonham is probably lying. Because there's no way in the world you would remember anything journalist even then because he's rock. Journalists will just be down in the in the mock. With them i add. We'll we'll case. Here's your jumping into the episode. This is going to be a little bit different. Because normally i am very stringent when it comes to time line you know. I like everything to be in a linear fashion. He's moved it. Just didn't feel right so i tried to make the dates work but they might not work. We might be in one thousand nine hundred ninety three and then go back to sixty four. We might go with you. Know being seventy two and end up in seventy eight. I don't know i it's it's so you're so basically you're scott back ula. We're going to relive quantum leap exactly quantum leap of moon. This is a quote keith. Was the first to treat the drums lead instrument. And this is a quote by tony fletcher. He made the drums at that. Spoke very much the same way that a lead guitar does and i should say tony. Fletcher spent three years collecting info on the biography. Dear boy and. I bought that book. And i tried to read it and those words are very hard that that book is written in a way that It's almost too haughty to be deserving is is it like is it. Was it written by musician for musicians. Sort of i don't actually know. Other than the biographer. Who tony fletcher is but The the book is look is difficult. I i i actually. I don't read a ton of books committee rate when you rate and right like as your job that's not necessarily what you wanna do. Is your free time. But i did read keith. Richards book and it was a fascinating read except early when he was talking a intently and and and in great depth about the guitar. Because i'm not a musician. And i didn't know what he was talking about. He's talking about tunings. And all this stuff and i'm like i got nothing it's like two. We get naked people cocaine because that's really want rating national blues. Well i don't worry there's going to be plenty of that. Let's get their military german for the band. The who inspired the world of rock with both his mad performances and is notoriously self destructive behavior. And when i say this guys. I i can't stress. This enough. he is he was loose. He was He he was gone. He i would not i would. I don't know. Maybe when i was nineteen i might have been able to keep up with him with holy crap. This gets this gets crazy. Arbitrators his He was destructive on and off the stage and the numerous strong kits were fall. Victim to moons madness held rooms and Just so you guys know. I seek to this day. Who is still banned from the holiday inn like the line of like.

Opening Act - Rumors in Rock

"First false rumor. Did you ever hear the rumor about Keith? Moon driving a Rolls Royce into a hotel pool. I've heard a lot of stories about Keith. Moon well. He is the quintessential rock and roll guy and bad boy he definitely collected Nazi memorabilia. He may have bitten. Steve McQueen's Hog and blew up his drums win. The WHO played on the smothers brothers. Comedy Hour. I cannot wait to do his episode I am. I have like four books based on. Keith Moon I am. I am locked and loaded. I Love Keith. He is my soul. Well so those things may be true however there was a rumor that he drove a Rolls Royce into a pool at the Holiday Inn in Flint Michigan on his twenty. First Birthday. This is not true. According to Pete Townsend. The story is actually a combination of two different stories. That has become one not true rumor. So Keith Moon. In one of the stories like one of the incidents he left the Hamburg off of a car and it rolled into a pool which was under construction and to not have any water in hit home. Which would be worse though driving? Dr Into a pool with water or driving a car into a pool without water but he didn't drive the car into that. I'm just like either one either or I'm just saying like it just rolled in on its own. Which would do more damage I think you're pretty much screwed either way fair enough. The cars a loss of it goes near the pool. Yeah Okay and then so the second story that this was combined with to create the not true drove. Rolls Royce. Into a pool was that he charged new car to the band. Who refuse to pay for it. So Moon drove it into a muddy pond in his garden and call the dealer to come pick it up. So it's too true. Stories rolled into one story right. That's not true. Yeah Oh yeah. It's incredible and that's not our last Keith. Moon rumor either. Nope our next one which is true now okay. I should say with the caveat that these are true and false based on articles that we both read and so there might be room for error. So this is just like fun. Yeah it's just fun and it's inauguration. It's yeah just what we found. No one has photographic evidence. It's just fun fun so I hope you guys out. Don't get angry and you're like that never happened or that did happen bub-bubba so like don't don't get mad at us is just this is just meant to be fun and a little bit looser so and just for us to kind of talk off the cuff so Our next one. Which is true. Is All about Ozzy Osbourne. Oh my so ozzy. Osbourne achieved infamy overnight after incident on January twentieth nineteen eighty two in Des Moines Iowa during the height of his drug problem. That is putting it mildly. Ozzy Osbourne was performing when an audience member through a bat on stage. The singer believing that it was rubber and I do believe that he thought it was robbery. I don't think he would have. I believe that too. Yeah bid off its head as a stunt only to find out that the bat was real and alive not only that but as he declares in liner notes to the two thousand two reissue of diary of a madman. The Bat wound up biting him as well which forced him to be treated for rabies. The incident fed his rock madman legend along with the one time that he bit off the head of a dove which basically what happened was when he first met with Columbia records in Nineteen ninety-one. He took a live dub into the meeting with him and bit off the head in front of the horrified executives. Awful yeah so crazy man out. I wouldn't sign him to a record deal yeah. He was also arrested for urinating on. Or near the Alamo. And while on tour with Motley crue he allegedly got into a one upmanship. Dare contest with Nikki. Nikki six and I'm sorry that is at is a contest. I would never even get close to know but he ended up snorting a line of ants better than biting the heads off live animals. I think though no okay. The dove thing is kind of unforgivable. The bad thing is understandable. But you snorted a line of ants would if they were fire ants also. You just have ants in your sinuses now. I'm sad I read that. Oh my God you have to elaborate immediately regretted it I apologize. You should move on move on Thanksgiving on next all right. Here's a good one Kay cass. Elliot choke to death on a ham sandwich. Can We bury this now? Please yeah really not cool. I don't like this lie at all. This rumors terrible are you. Doing Mama Cass. Yes I am all right so this came up. Following a series of sold out gigs. In London Mama Cass retired to her apartment where she died of heart failure on July. Twenty Ninth Nineteen Seventy Four. A rumor spread very quickly that she died from choking on a ham sandwich which is just a horrible thing to say you know yes. She was a little overweight route. So it's believed that the rumor started when Dr Anthony. Greenberg the physician who I examined CASS. After her death wrote she appeared to have been eating a ham sandwich and drinking coca cola while lying down a very dangerous thing to do. She seemed to have choked on her ham sandwich. So so great job Dr Greenberg for that one. But point of fact her autopsy showed that a heart problem leading to heart. Failure was the cause of death not a sandwich or any other item lodged in her throat or trachea. She had actually had very little to eat the day before she died like her stomach was pretty clear. No dead I'm actually going to piggyback and double down on a Mama Cass and Keith Moon. True story with us. They were not but they did die in the same apartment. Yeah rockstars have been taken from US. Way Too young and it just so happens that two brilliant musicians died in the same apartment at the same age of thirty two Singer Harry Nilsson I love. That's my alarm. Every morning I wake up to his song. GotTa get out okay. If you've seen the show Russian dolls you'll know why I wake up to a song every day but He renounced his London flat to friends when he was traveling. And so on June twenty ninth nineteen seventy four Mama Cass of the Mamas. And the Papas was staying in the flat while she was on tour and died of heart failure in her sleep and on September seventh. Nineteen seventy eight Keith. Moon of the WHO overdosed on a sedative in that very same apartment which is eerie because they died in the same apartment under the same landlord at the same age. How crazy is that? That's a little
