Opening Act - Rumors in Rock
"First false rumor. Did you ever hear the rumor about Keith? Moon driving a Rolls Royce into a hotel pool. I've heard a lot of stories about Keith. Moon well. He is the quintessential rock and roll guy and bad boy he definitely collected Nazi memorabilia. He may have bitten. Steve McQueen's Hog and blew up his drums win. The WHO played on the smothers brothers. Comedy Hour. I cannot wait to do his episode I am. I have like four books based on. Keith Moon I am. I am locked and loaded. I Love Keith. He is my soul. Well so those things may be true however there was a rumor that he drove a Rolls Royce into a pool at the Holiday Inn in Flint Michigan on his twenty. First Birthday. This is not true. According to Pete Townsend. The story is actually a combination of two different stories. That has become one not true rumor. So Keith Moon. In one of the stories like one of the incidents he left the Hamburg off of a car and it rolled into a pool which was under construction and to not have any water in hit home. Which would be worse though driving? Dr Into a pool with water or driving a car into a pool without water but he didn't drive the car into that. I'm just like either one either or I'm just saying like it just rolled in on its own. Which would do more damage I think you're pretty much screwed either way fair enough. The cars a loss of it goes near the pool. Yeah Okay and then so the second story that this was combined with to create the not true drove. Rolls Royce. Into a pool was that he charged new car to the band. Who refuse to pay for it. So Moon drove it into a muddy pond in his garden and call the dealer to come pick it up. So it's too true. Stories rolled into one story right. That's not true. Yeah Oh yeah. It's incredible and that's not our last Keith. Moon rumor either. Nope our next one which is true now okay. I should say with the caveat that these are true and false based on articles that we both read and so there might be room for error. So this is just like fun. Yeah it's just fun and it's inauguration. It's yeah just what we found. No one has photographic evidence. It's just fun fun so I hope you guys out. Don't get angry and you're like that never happened or that did happen bub-bubba so like don't don't get mad at us is just this is just meant to be fun and a little bit looser so and just for us to kind of talk off the cuff so Our next one. Which is true. Is All about Ozzy Osbourne. Oh my so ozzy. Osbourne achieved infamy overnight after incident on January twentieth nineteen eighty two in Des Moines Iowa during the height of his drug problem. That is putting it mildly. Ozzy Osbourne was performing when an audience member through a bat on stage. The singer believing that it was rubber and I do believe that he thought it was robbery. I don't think he would have. I believe that too. Yeah bid off its head as a stunt only to find out that the bat was real and alive not only that but as he declares in liner notes to the two thousand two reissue of diary of a madman. The Bat wound up biting him as well which forced him to be treated for rabies. The incident fed his rock madman legend along with the one time that he bit off the head of a dove which basically what happened was when he first met with Columbia records in Nineteen ninety-one. He took a live dub into the meeting with him and bit off the head in front of the horrified executives. Awful yeah so crazy man out. I wouldn't sign him to a record deal yeah. He was also arrested for urinating on. Or near the Alamo. And while on tour with Motley crue he allegedly got into a one upmanship. Dare contest with Nikki. Nikki six and I'm sorry that is at is a contest. I would never even get close to know but he ended up snorting a line of ants better than biting the heads off live animals. I think though no okay. The dove thing is kind of unforgivable. The bad thing is understandable. But you snorted a line of ants would if they were fire ants also. You just have ants in your sinuses now. I'm sad I read that. Oh my God you have to elaborate immediately regretted it I apologize. You should move on move on Thanksgiving on next all right. Here's a good one Kay cass. Elliot choke to death on a ham sandwich. Can We bury this now? Please yeah really not cool. I don't like this lie at all. This rumors terrible are you. Doing Mama Cass. Yes I am all right so this came up. Following a series of sold out gigs. In London Mama Cass retired to her apartment where she died of heart failure on July. Twenty Ninth Nineteen Seventy Four. A rumor spread very quickly that she died from choking on a ham sandwich which is just a horrible thing to say you know yes. She was a little overweight route. So it's believed that the rumor started when Dr Anthony. Greenberg the physician who I examined CASS. After her death wrote she appeared to have been eating a ham sandwich and drinking coca cola while lying down a very dangerous thing to do. She seemed to have choked on her ham sandwich. So so great job Dr Greenberg for that one. But point of fact her autopsy showed that a heart problem leading to heart. Failure was the cause of death not a sandwich or any other item lodged in her throat or trachea. She had actually had very little to eat the day before she died like her stomach was pretty clear. No dead I'm actually going to piggyback and double down on a Mama Cass and Keith Moon. True story with us. They were not but they did die in the same apartment. Yeah rockstars have been taken from US. Way Too young and it just so happens that two brilliant musicians died in the same apartment at the same age of thirty two Singer Harry Nilsson I love. That's my alarm. Every morning I wake up to his song. GotTa get out okay. If you've seen the show Russian dolls you'll know why I wake up to a song every day but He renounced his London flat to friends when he was traveling. And so on June twenty ninth nineteen seventy four Mama Cass of the Mamas. And the Papas was staying in the flat while she was on tour and died of heart failure in her sleep and on September seventh. Nineteen seventy eight Keith. Moon of the WHO overdosed on a sedative in that very same apartment which is eerie because they died in the same apartment under the same landlord at the same age. How crazy is that? That's a little

"You're listening to rock star in philanthropy this Eljay harness. You call yourself a self professed old rocker with an edge. And I love that phony talk a little about the edge because you're an interesting guy. Well, I'll tell you when I came out here. I started setting with some of the great musicians in. They would almost hate you got back it up back off a little bit l j you know, I am from the old school. I always played with older. Musicians and entertainers, and they mentored me they taught me it's one thing to be a drummer. But it's more than that to be an entertainer. And even at what I do for Cadillac. You got to have an edge. It's an EMMY a package to where people remember you and being on stage ten people or ten thousand you never know who that one person is this out in the audience, and of course, had CLYDE Davis. The God the record business for many years discovered everyone from Whitney to go on down the list in a little beach club. Saint Pete beach many years ago, he brought in Keith Emerson have been twenty people in the club. We got our first record deal because of that. But there again, we were on our toes. You know, you take no prisoners when you walk on stage to this day, and I'm going to be sixty seven years old. In a couple of months been playing fifty seven years the drums still when I walk in anywhere. I want people to notice me because I'm there representing Cadillac if. It's our homeless veterans animals rights for no kill animal shelters. Abused women and children. He got to have an edge just to make sure you're getting everyone's attention at the right time. Well, if you're a visitor to Vegas, then let's say they've been thinking about Cadillac because that's a great cars been a great car since I was a little kid, and they wanted me to rock drummer. It's okay for them to drive up and say, hi and Henderson would imagine most definitely. And I'll tell you what's really cool. And I share this story with John. I think last time. I do a lot of shows in this town sponsored by thinly Cadillac, and I was getting ready to go out on stage for would Boyd gaming, the Suncoast wonder, our local hotel casinos and a very famous comedian the star the Los Angeles comedy clubs Sammy shore, his son is paulie shore. And of course, Sammy he's pushing ninety years old now and still stands up, and he sees me at all the charity events yours. Hey Cadillac, how you doing? So I'm getting ready to go on stage. I'm gonna perform promote the Marine Corps toys cortott show and I'm sinking. How's he going to introduce me? All of a sudden, he's setting the crowd up. He goes this next young man that we're bringing out that is if we can get him to come out because he's very shy very backwards, which is just the opposite. Any introducing me the Cadillac of drummers Eljay harness. And I thought what a cool tag because when we were growing up. Everything was compared to a Cadillac the Cadillac a washer and dryer. The Cadillac of this gorgeous, new, housing, development, whatever. So I took that as a major complement, and that's just part of the tag. I I have. Well, that's great. Is a great rock tremor. I gotta take this opportunity to ask you who are your heroes. Disney'll pert come to mind, or is a buddy rich before that was funny. The professor yes from rush Neil perk. When I took on his music made me a better drummer, I love challenges. But if you read my bio, and that's under Larry Joe harness, which is known had the opportunity to go. See the who their first American tour at a county fairgrounds. Indiana and Mark guitar players. Mother was the newspaper critic, so we got to go that afternoon when they were setting up greyhound bus pulls up, and you know, we're all the suitcases luggage is pulled out. I saw these guys pulling out brand new son amplifiers with the price tag still on. I thought that was kind of unusual after a soundcheck we're in the dressing room with Keith moon, Roger Daltry and the drum Rhody going through a stack of crack symbols. I never seen a crack symbol make long story short. I got to stand right behind Keith moon. Oh that night in one thousand nine hundred sixty six sixty seven he changed my life because Keith moon attack, his drums, he would attack it and everybody in the who was a league ITAR player lead bass player lead drummer along Roger Daltry, but a worked so that probably had more influence because he just doesn't play the grew pocket. He's a very busy drummer. But it made sense from him to Ringo. Which the Beatles is what got me started after that first night on it Selman and sixty four my father took me to see the Beatles. That summer the Indiana state fair and tickets were five dollars. Wow. What is it about drummers? You gotta tell me because I mean, he was a maniac, you know, he he put it in there. And I mean, I think even the guy that did Billy Joel's tour or his regular guy he imposes pants down a part of the pact. What is it about you guys? Well, I'll tell you what. It's just. Something that always I'm hypnotized in drawn in by drummer, you brought up buddy rich. I got to see buddy rich and meet him in high school, and that guy he can do more just his left hand, the most guys can do with both hands and still he had an edge, very cocky. But he could back it up, you know, and then seen so many drummers through the years. It's amazing. I love to go see a ban. There's always something you can learn something to add to your your own style or something you can do I do that. And I don't like that. You know, and that's what's cool and drummers you can have a half ass ban with a great drummer. And the Bank is much better. Right. Just a fact and through the years I've seen so many drummers. And of course, I'd come back with something. I can always add and you like they guess in the sense that you're seeing these guys coming in all the time. Do you like doing that? And taking a walk. You know of listen more these guys in your mind who are up in the great sin. Who are just the so-so? Sure. Yeah. I'll tell you. What you're you're hitting on some hot points. Right. They're getting back to what I said when I came here though. I'm being told you gotta back off your little too powerful. And all of this really at first discouraged mass, screw that. If you wanna Eljay you're getting the full package because I am from the old school to wear when I come on stage. I'm there to make everybody on stage with me better. And no one your place. There's something to that. But don't put handcuffs on Eljay. If he asked me to come on stage and the big smile. You know as contagious positive energy, a smile on stage interacting with your bandmates the audience sees at in the energy to start bouncing back and forth off each other. So. That makes sense. Why you so into the Cadillac brain and so forth. You always want to be the best. Of course, when you think of American cars in particular. Most people would say Cadillac. That's just a fact and I'm all about demographics being the marketing promotions manager working for John of phenomenal passionate general manager that saw something in me to where he allows me to be Eljay and represent the Finley family, which gives millions of dollars back to this community yearly. And of course, Cadillac there's something we used to think, oh, that's our grandparents and parents damage. No, no, no, the industry people in this town. I'm talking from the age of twenty three to say fifty three so amazing. How many people they're younger? Driving a Cadillac now Cadillac is back to being cool. Like, it was when we were growing up and then again for Cadillac in the Finley auto group to understand how important it is to get involved in the community support this great charities, and I get to represent one of the things when you talk to people were kind of made that comeback was when they started putting the Led Zeppelin music been along time, she's a rock and roll. What a great what a great marketing. You know that you give me goosebumps because it was I forget what year of the Super Bowl. Halftime. That's when more people are tuned in right before the half game halftime show. And I think that might have been the year Michael Jackson perform, I'm not sure. But all sudden, the TV screen went dark for for just a couple of seconds. All of a sudden you hear the intro with the drums. Pomp, Donna bumped Dan, Dan. And then are you see headlights come on? And this XL are the hardtop two door convertible come shooting out of a mountain tunnel. That was a powerful statement. This isn't your granddaddy's caddy in a more. Well, let's talk about the toys for tots thing. Because everybody's heard of toys for tots here in Vegas. What you guys do is really above and beyond the west gate. What would you get the idea to bring in these great local acts and everybody if you just give a little day, you can get tickets of this thing. And it's a great show people look forward to it. But I'll tell you. I'm blessed, my grandparents and parents instilled in me growing up, you know, you give you give back you get back. And when I came out here ten years ago, I had this vision because I've been supporting the Marine Corps toys for tots. Toy drive for years as an entertainer and with Cadillac back and Florida, I thought hell the entertainment capital of the world. How can I make a good idea bigger? And I went to my first general manager had to beg for five hundred dollars for this idea. I just happened. To stumble into the new Hard Rock Cafe on the Las Vegas strip. I waited twenty minutes media general manager that didn't have time for me. He said get your point. I was intimidated and produce myself. He goes seriously, tell me what you need 'cause I'm real busy. I wanna put on a Marine Corps toys for tots, the Las Vegas headlining show. This. Big burly guides general manager hard rock stands up puts his right hand out and goes marine. There's fake right there..

"What could be more shocking their their pictures of keith moon dressing up as a nazi general and running around and like i think it's nineteen seventy to nineteen seventy three with the idea being that like how outrageous can i be i mean you have to remember to the late sixties early seventies is really kind of the flowering of what they later called sick humor the idea that you know it was ghoulish black comedy that you could put out there in the sicker the better the more outrageous you could be the better so yeah it's a it's not surprising to hear no that punks wars wass to us because their whole thing's going to get a rise out of you they were gonna shock you and so the getting i'd be more mad at punk wearing a swastika today well yeah because to quote another very problematic figure that joke isn't funny anymore there there's something about trying to shock somebody with a swastika today takes on an entirely different ideological meaning because whether you there too many people that aren't where they're wearing those now without irony yeah even if it's not an actual swastika they're certainly flying that flag symbolically so right now i am shocked by tommy which makes me like it it nervous about how much i like this movie i think that's a natural reaction because steadily there's probably a number of instincts in your body as a critic that's going like nope no this doesn't work this is corny variety showing the seat the individuals don't fit together got me really thinking a lot about how you know music changing song tucson literally changing tempo in the films like we're just engine tempo and that's how this goes these things don't have to fit together i don't need them to fit together but then they're also all these things are really enjoyed it that i thought were so beautiful it picturing the shot where tommy gets his eyesight back he runs through a field of flowers and he leaves behind this visible diagonal trail and you realize he has his eyesight back because he sees the gardeners and he avoids them eighty finally gets to make icon tact with the camera and just the beauty in that i love how bold in margaret is in being a grotesque female which we don't get that much of unscreened but her tina turner allow themselves to look like monsters margaret especially putting the bronze are on her cheeks being so brave in this role might she got a golden globe nomination for this she was nominated for an academy award for best actress which again is seems mindblowing a though not as mindblowing watching an margaret in spandex jumpsuit ritholtz on the floor as as baked beans and soap suds and chocolate or sort of poured onto the set and she gets to riff around the in the sort of like orgy ecstasy her acting in that is amazing because she does not look repelled for a second maybe the editing is amazing edited out on her repellent stuff but i know it's my second favorite and margaret seen in the entire movie and she had done a runtime ken russell died she had talked to i think it was entertainment weekly and talked about doing that scene and how she had said that every time they had to do a take she had to go and change and like wash her jumpsuit which he said kept getting progressively tighter and tighter the more she washed it and you know wash your hair and recurrent and redo her makeup and get basically back to square one so that they could just like dump stuff on her that scene where the beans come out and she is knocked back to the thing is really happened it was coming out at such velocity that literally knocked her across the room she also talked about how she had to keep breaking the tv through the champagne bottle at it and they would clean up to go back to square one but there was a bunch of glass there in the tv so that when the soap suds come came out she she's taking the soap suds and putting it on her face like this and they start turning pink because she has cut up hands from all the glass it's been spewed out in these suds against my second favorite seeing my first favorite seen my first favorite aunt margaret scene comes think about fifteen minutes later when tommy actually gets liberated he gets census back and.

"Keith moon was also a genius but at a lower level of genius he said that end through and then he said you know and i'm close that he said roger was just the singer well it is true with everything that these bans its wonder you wonder why they any of them ever do less together at all he said that was his ex it was well i mean it's true i mean if you are the singer you can't really be a genius i made can you not at your singer can't be a genius singer bear credibly talented but it's different than like being a genius i don't assessed at you new a singing genius what would that what would that be like a singing genius how they you what i think that that's ability rather than its genius well anyway that's what he's his whole point was that roger have always had an inferiority complex being surrounded with a three geniuses like them probably that's like you coming into work every day having this be surrounded by there are that me is unlike sea i think and i actually the towns and meant that he might probably is correct about all of that i kid ever shoot my most off without making it just i'm just be so over the top that it sounds ridiculous people don't understand the show don't understand that ninety nine percent of this is targeted she you understand how long did it take you to understand that i was doing it here four year yeah i took four years your head was spitting those first four years all right let me give you.

"And he was when he was very dominating personality you know like socially in his social circles you know um you know there's so many stories of him like just being like buddies with keith moon you know i came in keith moon going off on these drunken benders together and stuff you know so i do think it's yeah it's very deliberate that the the casting of oliver read in this movie because hayes um his because the character of how ragland is very much into the cult of himself you know like he is he is definitely uh nurturing this idea of this summer free institute as this cult that slake celebrating his theories proving his theories you know like all of these people who are his patients he looks at like his children like he is the daddy of all of these people and had dozen of the natural lines as well that man's a genius yeah and he's and he does play because there's so much roleplay some like overt roleplay in the film through the soma free institute he really he plays the daddy two so to so many of those characters in their roleplaying activities but he also functions that role in real life in the will not real life but i mean in the in the summer free institute as the doctor as the head of the organisation you know he sort of like the daddy to all these troubled children you know so they're almost like his brood you know in a way were wrong.
