Dog Breath Photography!

"Pay welcome back to another episode of this week and photo. I am your host frederick johnson. Today we're talking about dog photography and and this specific conversation and you guys know. I've had people on the show before that that specialize in pet animal photography. But this one's a little different for several reasons. We're going to go into keighley's work style and why she shoots what she shoots house. She shoot what she shoots and this amazing new book that he just released. Which is how we came into contact with each other so kaley. Welcome to the show. How's it go it. Hey thank you so much for having me. I'm so pumped to be here and it's going well a relatively well given the weird wild crazy year. The where the wheels fell off the world's but other than that everything's going good and i'm really grateful to be here. Thanks for having me. You're welcome you're welcome. Thank you so much for agreeing to do the interview during the down week between christmas and new year so would most people are just veg watching movies and putting on pounds. We're working and having fun and talking photography so thank you for taking the time out. I'll feel great. Yeah yeah so. Let's dive into this. So kayla are you. You are a photographer. You specialize in animal photography pet photography dot photography specifically. So let's let's rewind a little bit and go into how you got started in this world this sort of upside down world of shooting furry people instead of models in all that. Cool stuff yeah. It's one of those things where like when you show up at a party. You know who what when parties where thing You know and and you're sorta like talk to other people and you get to know people and you meet them and they sorta like ask you. You know everybody sort of sizing each other upright their electrical. What are you do what you do. And then that's when i enter and say oh i photograph dogs for for a living and often. Kinda say like oh. Oh that's that's cute like do you do do okay with that. You know or or whatever they find it quite interesting. In fact i think they probably think like oh so you're unemployed between exactly right But actually it's been oh man. It's been an incredible wild ride. I've been photographing dogs professionally for a decade now. So i started my business ten years ago. i'm based in the boston area and my business called dog breath photography And and basically. Since the moment that i began ten years ago i started by photographing dogs at the shelter Simply just volunteering. My time and trying to make whatever small difference. I could make in the lives of these dogs who had no voice to speak for themselves You know dogs. That had these amazing stories to tell that had had no way to tell them basically. That's where i figured out. That photograph had the power to to save a life to change your life. And so that's kind of where i started to learn. I did go to college for visual arts. And so i had photography is sort of part of my curriculum and so i i kind of you know knew a little bit about it. But i wasn't by any means professional or real even good which is okay. That kinda came over the years as i developed and progressed. but that's just kind of weird. I'll started you know it's interesting so no no no this. This is great. It's funny. I wanted to interject in there or not funny. It's actually coincidental that we're having this conversation. Because when i started in the in photography combat photo journalist by training for the for the air force and when i was going through my training one of the assignments that they gave us. This is in denver. Colorado was to pick a story. All come in all the photographers that come in to train right. And they gave us these assignments and my simon over three days was a shoot it process printed mounted and presented to the class. This is back when we processed and printed and you know made stuff other than digital so so we did this thing and one of the miami assignment was to photograph animal shelter. And i remember. It's so funny that you say could save a life because this we were talking about the assignment. And i was trying to figure out what i should do for the assignment and i wanted to do something that was kind of what you talked about. You know saving lives and sort of helping helping somebody. It turned out to be dogs but the long story short my story was on. I think i titled it or deny zed euthanasia because it was about the animal shelter and showing you know. I showed the ingest all the way through the end for the dog didn't get or or pets that didn't get adopted and what that looked like and i wrote up a story about the the situation in denver at the time of the how many animals there were versus people that were willing to take them in and what happens to the leftovers right so yeah it was crazy. How incredibly powerful. I had no idea that you had in your background. That is that is so incredible. And so powerful. And i mean what a big beautiful heart you have to have to be able to witness that from from front to back like you said because i will admit that the part that i experienced. Typically the shelters You know kind of the the part where. There's so much hope. There's still so much hope right because the dogs are They're coming in. And it's heartbreaking and sad when you see their previous owners can of walking out the doors and leaving them and that that part is hard. But i always have lots of hope for their futures in kind of what can happen for them next so i will say that. I've never not that i haven't by choice stuck around for the those final bits that that can happen to them but just that the shelter that i volunteer at that system is very private about that. Part of things and that that process at the end is very like sort of hidden from the public and from the volunteers to because our hearts are so wrapped up in this work and we love these dogs so much that it is so gut wrenching emotional to out here. You know what happened to two fido and selby or whatever so so to actually. I saw a photographer who did a series somewhat like. You just mentioned who was with the dogs. They took their final portraits before the dogs sort of went into the us in asia room and they were so powerful and i thought my gosh that is what a heart and a spirit. This person has to be able to for the sake of art for the sake of spreading an incredibly powerful message to the public. The stuff that happens behind closed doors that we prefer not to think about

"The power of gathering our community to share is buyer and strengthen our industry and are committed to providing that opportunity in August. We look forward to sharing more information about. Jbc summer soon. So there you go your new update on more. Stop soon. We'll find out where this fits on the Jeff keely Google calendar of life. Yeah No I. I expect to see that I expected to see GDP connected to summer fest in some sort of way. I think this like I'm I'm shocked. That packs West is still seeming. Like it's going to. They haven't they haven't announced that they're going. They're going digital or just canceling the event yet and I assume that probably has to do with like the convention center and them like how probably like leaving the city to cancel it so they they can get some sort of money back for your vet But yeah like I'm curious to see when the next big gaming gathering is going to happen because twenty twenty. I think it's ruled out wash agree. I'm curious to see if Pax East happens. I'd be surprised because Paxi happens in February. Usually I be surprised if we're back at a place where we can gather that many people together. I mean if I remember correctly. Pax East varies between February April year to year. I might be wrong but really marched effect because I think a couple years ago. It was march in the big hubbub. This last year was that it was in February meaning. That was going to be way more colder near so atman before before we move on. I do want to say because I wasn't on the show yesterday. Talk about the inside. Xbox news dropped. Of course we're doing my reaction next. Thursday eight am here onto a southeast games. We doing it with no bike. Mike as well me you Mike Greg Andy. Oh and I have a full House here. Yemen's Nexgen begins gotta gotTa bring the heat for it with that though I when they announced it and it was like okay. It's not gonNA be any of the first party titles it's just GonNa be third party. I kinda was like that's weird. Rollout like why would you go with the third parties? First and then I I feel like if you're going to be the first to come out and talk about next. Show the Games like you should show your own stuff to sell your system right but then I start thinking about it a bit more. And how exciting is it that they have the confidence to have an event that is just third parties to meet at says? They're going to have an event. It's just first parties bent. That's just first parties. It's not just Hilo and Forza. They're going to be talking about a lot of stuff right Elliot. That's that's really exciting. But you know what's cool as fuck to? They've set this up so that they'll be able to have an event that's like every single game or showing here on Game Pass Da. That's true marketing right. Like that is kind of the best and then just be like you can get it. Now get to play these games already. If you haven't already got game you can join the club right now. And here's all the reasons you're GONNA WANNA stay and move with us into the series Ax baller marketing good through. We had a whole conversation. Yesterday about is game. Pass success and for me. It's like the clear success. I'll surprised to see how much we got a little bit. Pushback from like I've seen like forum posts and stuff about like is is game passes success when you look at like game sales and all these different things but like as somebody who's had game pass over the last couple of like the idea that outer. Wilde's came out last last spring right and that came out on game pass but I didn't. I didn't hear about it a few days after it came out because it was game. Those kinda under the under the radar but when people start talking about that game how about how incredible. It was the thing that they said. The thing that I was kind of surprised to hear was that also is available. Game Pass rate out here. People talk about like. Oh Yeah. This is one of the best games I've played this year and it's on came. Pass same with waders right like these are games that you might not like like notice right off the bat because they are lower key and they're more indie games right. It's harder for them to come out and make a splash and really you know. Come out and be curious five but you know the fact that there are incredible games that are under the radar that come out and you know you hear about them and you realize you just get employ them for basically free or I guess just with your subscription on pass I think speaks volumes to how valuable that Sir. That services And how valuable is going to be going forward when Xbox is in a place where they are putting out banker banker when they are putting out a limited enforced and like do darken game in August of Man. The percentage like the launch and launch window games for xbox series X. that are going to be game. Pass Dude like that's going to be a huge selling point and so I'm very I'm I'm very excited for what this looks like. It all starts next week. Let's go in all starts next week. A Tim Week is so far away if I want to know. What's coming out to monograph shops today where would I look the official list about coming software across each and every platform listed by the kind of Funny Games daily show hosts each and every weekday do do do do do do yeah out? because well I mean we're trying to comply right we're trying to do what everybody is asked to do an trying to make sure that we get through all this safe and sound and we're here for you over the next three hours three oh three seven one three eighty five eighty five three oh three seven one three eighty five eighty five is the telephone number we've got a lot of ground to cover and we look forward to doing so and you can also not only call but you can reach me on the text line five six six nine zero five six six nine zero and you can send me a tweet or a message on Twitter or give me a follow on Twitter and stay connected that way and that's at M. rice K. away Anthony ride along the grant Smith will be in as well as those two guys do incredible work back in the studio making sure that we sound as good as possible I have to you they have to overcome my shortcomings but that's all right it's good to be with you on this Sunday and I must say I must say that it's it was a bit of a Downer of a Saturday wasn't it I don't know if you heard the the coronavirus task force press conference that obviously president trump is is a part of every day but they were and he was pretty pretty honest about the next couple of weeks that it it could end will likely get difficult in terms of the number of deaths rising and in terms of the adversity that this country is facing and that's that's tough to hear but I don't know I mean I suppose we all handle this a little bit differently I just soon hear it straight up and hear what the experts are saying and you know sort of breaks for that and be able to try and prepare for that as best we can and then if it doesn't turn out to be as bad will that's awesome but better to hear it straight up like you know what this could get really difficult and the the number of deaths could rise from this terrible virus and date it could be an interesting couple weeks as it's been an interesting number of weeks before but it could get worse and will likely get worse and in case you missed it it again the not only here in Colorado but nationally they are looking at Colorado they meaning the experts Dr Fauci doctor Burks the task force even obviously governor Poloz and his administration looking at a potential hot spot developing here in Colorado and we don't know but there's no doubt that some of the signs are there and I think we just have to hope and pray it literally both that that it doesn't get as severe as some of the projections would indicate I don't know but but it was it was a bit of a Downer that way yesterday with with that news and obviously you know entering Holy Week for those of the Christian faith and it's no Palm Sunday today heading into Easter Sunday next week and and I gotta tell you I will just do start out by it by sharing this and if you want to join in feel free three oh three seven one three eighty five eighty five because we're gonna spend this first hour just sort of sharing some perspective getting your perspective on where we are in this thing and you know how you're feeling about it are you more down about it now and and I will say that even though the news was Graham yesterday and even though in the short run say the next couple of weeks for sure probably through the month of April it doesn't look great I still have great hope for this country I still have great hope in people not only nationally and in the biggest sense but also the people of Colorado we have shown ourselves to be resilient we've shown ourselves to be generous and kind and battlers and all of that and again in a situation like this that can sound like platitudes that can sound like empty words it can sound like preaching that doesn't really ring true because of the actual circumstances that we are in and those circumstances now don't look very good over the next couple weeks there's no question that so on the one hand I'm I'm not denying what has been said and what what could be coming down the pike here in the short run over the next couple of weeks but I'm not going to live in that either I'm not going to live in the place that it's it's going to be fatalistic if you will I have great hope and great belief in the people in this area and in families and in leaders and and sort of the even the unspoken in on noticed who who I mean that that's really who all of us are right because it's us doing our thing every day to try and look out for our neighbors and trying to help each other out and to try and do the right thing all those things that that we talk about so much that now we actually have the opportunity to do and I believe people doing but I believe they're going to continue to do and I think we're going to still see acts of kindness we're still gonna see generosity and we're still gonna see sacrifices that people make for others so it's it's that bad do all and that that that double edged sword I guess of of the news and the likelihood of the circumstances getting dire or more dire over the next week or two and yet still a great belief in in being able to pull through this and come out of this on the other side as best as we possibly can and in the best shape as we possibly can and it should be noted and should be reiterated that the reason that for the lag is as as everybody has said from the national level on down to governor Poloz and his team to anything you pretty much free there's a lag in so a lot of the difficulties now or are pre free up prevention or pre mitigation steps you know things like closing the bars and restaurants ordering the stay at home edict those kind of things it takes a little time for those things to kick in and the data that people have coming in those who are in the know certainly people lot smarter than I am it takes a little while and so obviously that's a big reason why we can see a difficult stretch of time in the short run and yet still believe that progress is being made if that makes sense and I do believe there is progress being made all the time we don't always hear about it we don't always know about it but I just happen to believe that it is not a believer out of ignorance it's not a believer a pie in the sky is that there are a lot of people working really hard to get us all through this and and one of the the couple of things I wanted to explore this hour in particular and cousin mentioned it cousin Luis was talking about it a little bit but you know there's there's sort of two two ways I want to go about this and I really do want to get your input and hear how your working through these two things in particular number one which I guess you could say is a little bit leaning towards the pessimistic side is what do you miss what do you miss about life as it was in routines as they were in one of the things that I miss is I just missed seeing people I'm an outgoing person I like seeing people I like talking to people and I like being with people seeing people obviously the work place for sure it just it in every day you know going to the store and and seeing people and and I miss that I really do and you don't even now Iran in Erin's last night had to run out just you get something down the street nothing nothing big and no was talking to the the clerk at the it was just a little mini Mart and it's just you know they have the the plastic shield between the where the customer stands and then the cashier behind the counter and I get those are signs of the times I mean you have to you have to take those steps but I just miss just being able to interact with people on a regular normal basis I guess I guess that's that's what I miss and so what I'm what I'm trying to do and I started this year late in the week and I'm gonna try to commit to doing it on an ongoing basis and I I'm just gonna try and take one person a day and somehow reach out to them maybe it's a text message maybe it's an email maybe it's a phone call maybe it's a face time or what have you but it was really cool because I was talking with a friend of mine on the east coast on Friday or Saturday I can't remember now the days run together we hadn't talked for a while dear dear friend and and kind of just comparing notes about what's going on where he is and sharing you know how we're getting through and it was just really cool and and we stay in touch fairly regularly anyway but it was more like you know I'm gonna check in with him and we're going to get caught up a little bit we have to continue our conversation because it got interrupted but that's okay and so I'm just what do you miss and then on the other side of that and on and I know a lot of people miss sports as I do but how are you then trying to stay positive how are you trying to keep your chin up how are you trying to stay in courage what are you doing to try to make the best of it right in that sort of goes along with what cousin Luis talking about earlier during his time with you from nine to noon this morning what what is it that that you're maybe doing that you didn't do before that you that you find you know it's not the way it was and it's not the same as things were but at least it's it's somethin right it's something that we can do and that's what I look at in trying to stay in touch with various people and I've had people reach out to me that I need to get back to and and that's gonna be really good to catch up with those folks but what are you doing to keep your chin up in the car to stay positive because after all we were kind of all in this together right we're all sort of at home or at least hopefully sell and trying to get by in trying to make life as normal as we can even though obviously work situations look completely different businesses look completely different nothing is the same in yet no I don't think any of us at least I hope not I mean just wanna go around every day all day wallowing in the negativity and the way things army we have to sort of back up a little bit and say all right we don't like it but what we do to try and.

Vanished: Kelsey Berreth

"It was Kelsey. Mom Cheryl contacted the police to report. Kelsey missing MRS on December. Second two thousand Eighteen Cheryl hadn't spoken to. Her daughter are in over a week. Kelsey infant daughter Kayleigh had been in the custody of her father and Kelsey Fiance Patrick swayze since Thanksgiving giving day and I wasn't like Kelsey to be out of touch without explanation right so right away alarm bells were ringing. Yeah this just isn't the Kelsey now. Oh very responsible. Smart Young Woman and Kelsey actually grew up on a farm in Washington state. She had a younger brother Clinton and loved. Horses is and she always had dreams of becoming a commercial pilot according to her mother and she she went to aviation school in Washington and then began working professionally as a flight instructor. So I'm very impressed by that. Yes pretty cool and everybody can do that in two thousand sixteen. She met Patrick swayze in on an online dating site. Type of thing yeah. She moved to Colorado to be near him so things heated up pretty quickly. Yes she really liked. Kim She thought he was a keeper and he could be the one group her list. She was well enough into him that she made a big move right. Yeah that shows something doesn't it. I mean and you have to be fairly committed to do that when we think frazee worked and lived on his mother's ranch where he trained cattle dogs and he also worked safari her. Now for those of you. Who Don't know like me? A farrier is a specialist in equine hoof care includes the trimming and balancing of horses hooves. WHO's and putting shoes on their hooves? Right and NASHES horses. I guess donkeys as well. He had a friend with donkey's who he is to take care of. Their hooves chargers officer who Friday I think so. So Kelsey worked. As a flight instructor at Falcon Air Force Base before she accepted the position. DOSS aviation Russian in Pueblo Colorado. Her boss Daas said that Kelsey was diligent and committed she commuted from her condo in Woodland Park to her job in Pueblo. Blow several days a week. People who flew with her remembered her as a very positive force in their lives and a someone that they could really trust when her students graduated graduated. They left some glowing reviews of her large knowledge base and her very helpful teaching techniques so she was really well regarded there so it seems and she had moved into her own condo in the town of Woodland Park and that's not far from phrase's ranch. The two became engaged and they had a baby girl in the fall of two thousand seventeen. They named her Kaley crazy. Seemed happy to be a father and seemed to take good care of Keighley but calcium calcium. Patrick didn't live together however in Kelsey family felt the relationship was a good one. The parents shared custody making plans to be together as a family. We at some point right so I kind of see right from the beginning here. A lack of commitment on his part that they weren't living together after they had a baby. Seems a little little strange to me. Yeah if you're co-parenting and you're engaged to be married. Why wouldn't you live together right? So that's just kind of a red flag that I noticed noticed right away and the beginning of this story. You're was it more. His decision not live together. Well we don't know you know. Her mother had said it was financial. He'll things which I think it was mostly him because he was the one who had financial problems which will get into. But let's go ahead and talk a little bit about the missing missing persons report and what I happened. Okay so the first police officer who showed up to do a welfare check on Kelsey was Corporal Beth Huber and Ed after entering information into the local and national databases. She contacted Patrick swayze so right away. They're going to contact the fiance well. Of course frizzy claimed that the last time he had seen Kelsey was Thanksgiving Day. That was November. Twenty second when they had exchanged custody of Keighley in the alley behind Chelsea's condo a frizzy said their romantic relationship was over during the the custody exchange. She returned items that belonged to Kelsey this included her handgun. Somehow Munition Car Keys House keys and some other personal items right so so custody. Exchange in the alley is another weird thing here. Yeah and also saying that their relationship was over nobody else knew of that UH and there was no evidence to show that and will notice that when we look at their conversations around this time Chelsea's family reported to police that it was highly unusual for her her to go away without telling anyone her mom Cheryl had spoken to Kelsey twice on the phone on November twenty second and two her Kelsey seemed like her normal. Happy yourself she talked excitedly about the upcoming Christmas holiday with Kaley. What kind of presence? They would have for stuff like that then after talking to her mom Kelsey Chelsea went shopping with Kaley. She was caught on video surveillance at a Safeway store and Woodland Park and she entered the store at twelve. Oh five everything looks. It's normal and exited the Safeway at twelve twenty seven pm and this would also be verified by receipts from the store so after leaving the store door Kelsey sent frasier text and she offered to make him a sweet potato casserole. That doesn't really sound like someone who's broken up. Her sure doesn't sounds like a good relationship. Yeah at least one that she's you know invested in for sure right then between twelve fifty four and when seventeen eighteen that same day frazee was captured on a Walmart surveillance camera at the Woodland Park Walmart. He had a baby carrier with a blanket that looked like the blankets. Seen with Kelsey and Kaley at the Safeway Okay we couldn't be seen but it's probable issues with frizzy because he had the carrier. Sure I think that's a pretty safe assumption. But Kelsey wasn't seen again after Thanksgiving Day even though her cellphone continued to send messages on November. Twenty four th Cheryl got a text from Chelsea's phone saying that she would call her later but then Kelsey never called her. The next day there was a text from Chelsea's phone to her supervisor at doss aviation it said she was planning to take a trip and would be away for a week. There were also messages to Patrick. swayze eight on the twenty four th at four. PM FRAC- sent a text to calcium phone. Saying if this is truly what you want respect your wishes and give you space the leave you alone now. Then the next day there was a text from Chelsea's phone to phrase's phone saying do you even love me. And he answered that text swith. Why would I bend over backwards and stand by you through everything if I didn't so the answer to your question is yes I do so so after about a week of not hearing from her daughter Cheryl Berith called free just to see you know what's going on? Frasier told Cheryl that he and Kelsey Elsie had an argument in calcium. Broken up with him and giving Kaley to him he suggested to share Kelsey may have flown somewhere with a CO worker. But Kelsey hadn't told Cheryl better trip or breaking up with Razi so mom Cheryl is getting more and more concerned and that's when she called the voice so at the welfare check of Chelsea's Condo. Her keys in purse were gone but both of her cars were parked outside. They didn't find any signs of foul. Oh play on this visit but her makeup in toothbrush. Were still in the bathroom and there were some mostly uneaten cinnamon rolls sitting on the stove. There was also also a candle on a warmer nearby in the heat was up higher than usual so these are all very strange things. She wouldn't leave for a trip without her makeup makeup in her toothbrush. Leaving food on the counter were turning the thermostat down right so by this time ten days had passed since Kelsey she had last been seen. Remember Cheryl got a text from Kelsey but we don't believe that that last one was from Kelsey because she was already missing right. Your impression is that it's doctored. Kind of thing. Yeah just to throw people off right and even Cheryl would say that. The texting wasn't like her daughters texting. So there were some red flags right away on the whole thing. There was a press conference held on December four and the case was still being treated as. There's a missing persons case. Police announced that Kelsey phone had pinged on a tower in gooding Idaho on November twenty fifth. This was a long way from aware. CALC- lived I think it was eight hundred. Two thousand miles so Cheryl spoke about her daughter being a reliable person and she asked for help in locating eating her but notably. Patrick Frasier did not attend this press conference and of course everybody noticed that

"And she was just thirteen right after her third appointment with Larry Keighley's, dad, always goes with her Kelly's mom and dad are divorced. You're not gonna hear from Kelly's dad. He didn't wanna talk to us on the record. Kaley remembers at the third appointment. Larry us to do something new. He wants her to change into a pair of loose ugly, orange shorts. He drapes a towel over her lower body. Larry steps in front of the table. He puts his body between the massage table Keighley's laying on and the chair where dad's sitting under the towel. Larry moves Keighley's underwear to the side and thrust his fingers inside her while chatting away about we. Weekend plans. It was like he was doing nothing wrong. Kelly says her dad's stays in the room for the full forty minute appointment, Larry gives Kaley some exercises to do at home. He tapes up her back, and that was it. A couple of hours after the appointment. Thirteen year old Kaely is in the car with their mom. You're remember like it was five seconds ago. I'm in the driver's seat. She's in the passenger seat, and she said. Larry did something to me today that made me feel uncomfortable. And I said, what would you mean while he you know, touch me? And I touched you wearing she said down there in the whole time. You're you know, what she's saying? But you're you're trying to rationalize that. It can't be that lease like, it's a sinking feeling in her gut. But she doesn't ask Haley a bunch of questions instead she calls. Her ex husband privately right away to ask him about the appointment with Larry and I called him. And I said do leave the room at any point in time. Knee said, no. And he's and he's like why you're scaring me. And I said, well, I think Kelly told me that, you know, Larry touched or down that recos Lisa. I was I was in the room. And I'm it's like the out of body experience. I'm fast forwarding to what she told me what he's telling me and. I know what might got telling me. And then I'm going to. If it is what I know. It is who's gonna believe me. What am I gonna do? What am I gonna in? You know, God forgive me. I I dropped it. I filed it back in the parenting filing cabinet until two thousand sixteen but her instincts were spouting. She knew it wasn't right. She told the parent. She did what she should have done. And. You know? Right here. Lisa kinda throws up her hands. Lisa glances at our daughter sitting right next to her on the bed. Tears. Well up Lisa's is. We've talked to so many parents who feel this way heartbroken guilty pissed off absolutely helpless and betrayed even that doesn't cut. It words. Just don't really cut it. They are now members of this terrible club parents who were unwillingly and unknowingly witnesses to their children's abuse. But most you were there, you you can't understand how manipulative this person was this is Ted again the dad you heard at the beginning. After the break, we're gonna hear Ted story. It's the story of a dad who was in the room, and it shows you how Larry didn't just groom his victims. He groomed. Their families too..
