Alabama education director ousted over book's stance on race

"The director of early childhood education in the state of Alabama has been pushed out of her job because of quote woke concepts, included in a teacher's guide, Alabama governor Kay ivey says she forced out state director Barbara Cooper. Over the distribution of a teacher training book to the state's pre-K school programs. The Republican governor has rejected what she calls WOAK concepts because of language about inclusion and structural racism. One example in the book says systemic and structural racism has permeated every institution and system and then says preschool must be immune from that because that's where children begin to see how they're represented in society. The book comes from the national association for the education of young children, and it's written only for teachers, not for children. I'm Jackie Quinn

Yeah, I mean, if you're a reporter in that room, what else can you say? What else can you ask? You say, well, what about the yellow sheet job? Now that I've asked you about the Southern California okay, our guest today include the aforementioned John talkie. We'll ask him about the situation. Is this another all of its situation? Whose role of it? She's the coach at Washington state who has fired last week after appealing for a religious freedom petition and denied, could that happen at auburn. It's also a possibility, it's also possible that mister B state where Mike Lee has also refused to answer vaccine questions. Mark shipper will join us. Your phone the phone number is 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5. It's just amazing that we're still having this conversation about vaccines. I don't want to, by the way, the federal mandate put in by the president is forcing these issues and the governor of Alabama yesterday Kay ivey said, I'm not going to force anybody to do it. The question really is, is it her decision? We don't know. We'll find out when we talk to John talti here in just a few minutes. Let's talk to Kevin right now. In Atlanta, hello, Kevin, go right ahead. Professor flying bob, I am humbled and privileged to be the first color of the day, my goodness. Thank you. And so now I completely forgot why I called you, I think it has something to do with sports journalism and I do not begrudge them or get angry at them because they have a job to do like all journalists, but can you please spread the word to your colleagues and fans? I call you that Georgia has actually played somebody, my goodness. I know pre seasons, the polling doesn't mean anything, but cleansing does not drop off. Clemson has been there. Quarterbacks leave quarterbacks come. They're there. No one knew what they were at the beginning of the season. Neutral field, so to speak in Charlotte, we did what we did. Goose eggs against SEC teams. You're playing your 8th string team against an SEC team and they can't even get a field goal and people like duly yesterday in Gainesville is talking about, oh, they have a really played anybody since of Arkansas, Arkansas. Auburn beat LSU, everyone was every week every week I hear, oh, this is going to be the test. This is the test. And it just keeps going and going. It's just insane to me. It blows my mind that people can still say Georgia hasn't played anybody. It sticks in my craw. I would like to join the work. Don't let it bother you. I know that's easy for me to say, but don't let pat Dooley in your day, okay? It's not worth it. I appreciate that. I mean, it's actually bothers me because I watch every week and I love what I see. I understand that. But it's just to be that's all they're doing. All we do is pontificate. Tom is up next in Alabama. Hey, Paul, how are you doing? Tom. Hey, how are you doing? Tom. Hey, Paul, how you doing? I'm doing well. Thank you for asking. How about you show every day? I think it's the best show on TV. Thank you very much. My question for you is, I think our balance go go 11 one and being Georgia and win an Azure championship give Nick Saban a national championships. Tom, could you could you enlighten me on what you're seeing that maybe some other people aren't that would make you believe what you just got through saying? The second best quarterback in the league is the best running back in the league. They've got the best running back in the way. The difference between getting a lot better. Yeah. Okay. Tom question, I have a question for you. You might consider this too personal because it's about your health, okay? Yeah. Okay. It's not about vaccine. I would never ask you by that question. Okay, well, I'm not asking you that. I have a more serious question, considering what you just got through saying. You just got through saying you see Alabama running the table, beating Georgia and winning the national championship. So my health question she was this. "Republican governor, Kay Ivey said, Uh that it's time to blame the unvaccinated. They've let us down. Just last week, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice had this message for the unvaccinated. For God's sakes, a living How difficult is this to understand? Why in the world do we have to come up with these crazy ideas and their crazy ideas that the vaccines got something in it, and it's tracing people wherever they go. And the same very people that are saying that are carrying yourself phones around. I mean, come on. Come on. So that being said Justice isn't still not supportive of the vaccination mandate for private businesses, But he clearly wants to get the unvaccinated people in his state to take the shot. Well, it's interesting hearing Jim Justice say that, But if some of his fellow Republican governors follow through with their threats to sue the administration over the mandate, I mean, what do you think will happen to their lawsuits? There's going to be a big fight in court about this. But historically, the courts have ruled that vaccine mandates are constitutional. And remember, even governors in the states where they say they're going to sue. They say We're not anti vax. We're just anti vax mandate. They already have vaccination mandates on the books for public school attendance. Kids who go to public school in Texas. Are mandated to get a vaccine for polio, hepatitis, measles, mumps rubella, So the White House feels it's on pretty strong legal ground to regulate businesses in a public health emergency. But this, of course all has a political cost for President Biden, and it's been several rough months. Several rough months. I don't know if his new, aggressive tack on vaccines will make up for the self inflicted wounds of the messy withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan. But this is one rare instance where the opponents of his policy are making a more convoluted argument that he is Republicans who say they're pro vaccine but anti Vax mandate. Biden says, Hey, we're giving you a choice. Get your employees vaccinated or test them. That's NPR. National political correspondent Mara Liasson. Thank you so much, Mara, you're welcome..

"The republican party as a whole and even as an apparatus listen. I thought the republican party the gop national republican party. I thought i was actually kind of encouraged by them. During the trump years they were actually fairly conservative and or populace. Whatever you wanna say since trump has left office the same people that are there my goodness guys my culture when he left and right back to where they were. You know nothing about vaccine mandates. But we're really really super duper proud during pride month to have so many different colors of the rainbow representative representing the republican party. It is completely unmortgaged from any sort of a coherent worldview and christie noam despite the pretty face and articulate demeanor that she brings to the table. she's just a corporatist. She's no different than a lindsey graham or a fill in the blank with your favourite corporate governor. If if kay ivey did the same things in alabama the christie noam is doing now. I hear what you're saying. You see where i'm going there. I know what you're saying. Yeah top well. I was probably the most bullish a year ago about christie known because of the total package what she represented. And it's it's it's not just that she's attractive but part of it is also she seems to enjoy being a woman not having to run away from it. Apologize for it. Men and women alike. Our side of the fence are desperate for shannon cracked. A joke about it. I was planning this. I would have done hair and makeup. I mean we're just we're so exhausted by the genderless not set. It seemed like she might just have a window into the zeitgeist. A powerful one. That is tough these days for a main even as compelling as rhonda scientists. But here's the thing you can never make secondary or tertiary things the primary things in life if you do those are called idols. And even though she has looked like indiana jones in many cases the last year at the end of the third indiana jones movie the last crusade after all the heroic things. He's did the real test comes up when he has to get that grail and they say it's time to ask yourself doctor jones. What do you believe. And that's the problem with her. And the entire republican party at they may believe in a lot of important things but they are very often out of wack with their priorities in terms of the hierarchy of needs. The order of things in this country was founded on a creed that relies on rights being defined by our maker and that one. She failed miserably to wrap her arms around. Her job is to protect the god. Given rights of our citizens. Businesses don't have rights governments don't have rights groups don't have rights segments of society. Don't have rights. in our republicans smaller form of government. individuals have rights rights co two individuals. From god vertically government's job horizontally is to protect and defend those rights period. You okay that is her job the idea that well job. So she's not. She's not enforcing the the feds codes the eeoc codes on gender and race discrimination. Then i guess in south dakota and you can you can put up a sign. Said we don't hire black people here. We don't hire women here. I mean she doesn't want enforcing the feds do right now just beyond it's beyond it's senseless it's beyond ridiculousness and it's this argument that we have run into here in the last year and a half that one side gets to go out there. The barbarians the visigoths to get to come over the wall they get to rape pillage and plunder all they want while we stand around arguing. About what the seventy fifth corollary and codicil is of a document that no one is respecting no social compact exist any longer. Noah constitution binds the people together when one side decides they will no longer abide by it. I am not forced to live a standard that is not enforceable while they take my way of life away. No i have a question. Can any of you answer this if you get fired for your from your job for not wanting to take the vaccine. Is that an example of conservative cancel culture because remember back when we were having this fight about dudes playing on on women's sports teams in her flaccid nece regarding that her big complaint about her critics was that this was an example of conservative cancel culture so and so is getting fired from your job. Because you don't want to take the vaccine. is that conservative. Cancel culture to. Can anybody answer that question. Exit question true or false. Christina home has now alienated so many people with corporatized schilling that trump could not even put him on her put her on his ticket now talk. Oh i'm going to have to sell on that. One wish that were so. But i'm selling your false false shannon. I agree right now. False not yet. I think people need to see a little bit more from her to to really turn on her. But i think that she still has a lot of support unfortunately barron absolutely false. You're all wrong. The answer is absolutely true. Let's get to issue for political john. Mclaughlin on your you're all let's get to unmasked. Okay are quick. Kicker questioned close this out who will be the next promising republican face. Plant like noam. What's that who could we be sitting here a year from now on we're like i cannot believe we were having this conversation. Who do you think it will be. Aaron i'll go to you first quickly. Okay i very quickly i. I don't want you to remember me saving your life today. I want you to remember this moment. I'm trying so hard not to be a smart ass right now and give you a straight answer. There are so many good answers that came up with think. It's ron to santa's just because i want to not be true so i'm going to say that you're going to try to jinx it. Yup okay. that's core. What are promising. Republicans who are the cinema a- laugh. She's one of the best senators in america right now. Yeah i'm in the same position he is. But i only have two names that come to mind saw. Just pick the other one. And that's our own governor. Kim reynolds okay. Kim santer said kim shannon going to you. Kim is not here shannon. go ahead same as aaron disentis. I'm sorry help. It's not true i would be. I think you're the odds of that happening. A year are low. Just because he's got a difficult reelect ahead of them. Okay now after that you know. I don't know anymore i don't know anymore. I mean this would be one of the dumbest face plants i've ever seen in politics. I mean if he takes on all the fights that he has had and all the baggage that goes along with that and then turns around and decides you know we call it chamber of commerce. I i just that would be. I don't even want to think about it. Aaron because it would be the dumbest. Yeah it would be the absolute dumbest sellout in the history of american politics. I think so. I don't even want to contemplate that one. Let's get to our predictions. Todd you go first. The we're going to see a lot more of what we saw with shannon in school board elections within the next year. it's it's unavoidable now for several reasons but this is ground zero of the culture fight. This is where conservatives get things wrong. The constant abandoned the public schools thing. It's terrible it's educate your kid however you need to in your own backyard and you may need but still if you pull your kid out still fight for that public school district. That's that's where the cult steve said. That's where the cult is being grown. You can't ignore you can't put it on cruise control. You must fight for it erin so after a couple of straight. Primetime games missing big time. Nfl players because of the ridiculous covert protocols. The nfl has put in place when it comes to vaccines and masking all of that junk very very quietly by october. The nfl will change. Its coverted policy so that fewer and fewer players will miss time. It's going to start hurting their bottom line there at a tough spot if they don't test vaccinated players risk vaccinated players infecting other people. And if they do then they end up in the situation. They're in right now. They are in a tough spot. Shannon your prediction quickly. Go ahead. i'd say in the next star thirty to forty five days. We're going to start to see very severe labour shortages in a united states healthcare systems as doctors nurses anesthesiologist. Healthcare workers refused to vaccinated there about forty percent. Who are holding out. Doesn't look like they are going to budge in so we're going to see staffing shortages and potentially a health crisis within our system potential collapse. If they don't pull their heads out of their behinds and give it of these policies. Well you must have read my mind because that is actually part of my prediction. The by the end of this year we are looking at a chronic shortage in unprecedented problem of labor shortages both in healthcare but also in defense in the military in both of them get to see as always glad. Chuck todd breaks them down a deep dive into a topic. Instead of covering all the big stories. We're gonna cover one. Single subject impacting american politics exploring and explaining the critical issues that affect our future. Meet the press. Reports all episodes of season two are now available on demand on peacock. Hey it's chris hayes. This week on my podcast. Wise is happening. I'll be talking with business and economics writer. Justin fox about the weirdness of the housing market after cova. What's happening is that as more people who can work anywhere moved to places that puts the squeeze on people in those places who can't work anywhere some of that can't be avoided and a lot of these places that are still growing and will be able to accommodate that over time so much in this country. It's all focused on the most affluent twenty-five percent or so of americans because they're the ones who are subscribing to the various media properties that report about it and they make more noise and they just have all this market power. That's this week on. Why is this happening. Search for wise is happening wherever you're listening right. Now and subscribe vaccine was developed an authorized under a republican administration and it's been distributed administered under a democratic administration. Vaccines are safe highly effective. There's nothing political about. Look at all the people who took a shot at they later. We learned a lot of them are already been vaccinated from the start. I have to compliment. Republican senate minority leader mitch mcconnell. He had made a political. He's encourage people to get vaccinated and continue to do so in the states in pretty good shape. Alabama republican governor. Kay ivey recently spoke out to encourage vaccination and even the commentators on facts who've been belittling this for a long time. Some haven't but many have are arguing get vaccinated. Look this is not about reputation. Blue states about life and death president biden praising some republicans recent push to get more americans vaccinated these however are the republicans biden will not be praising a number of house republicans yesterday marching over to the senate to protest reimposing mask mandates in the house speaking out against speaker nancy. Pelosi's push to mask up. That is not a speaker for america. that's a speaker. Only concerned about her own wealth her own direction and her own control. This is the people's house. Do we really wanna listen to this day. We really seriously like the dumbest man. It's not really that. I don't know if he is or not. I don't think just plays on tv or if he's actually tom but the question is how many of those house. Republicans are vaccinated. How many members of the house vaccinated. Because they know most of the democrats are we we've been hearing that they're republicans are still not vaccinate. How many of those house republicans are you so right. There are flying back to districts that are still hot with infections. That are still dangerous with infections because the infections are growing in their parts of the country chances are pretty good. If they're the press conference like that chances are really good. Just looking at that map that they're all from red hot districts are most of them. Were from red hot districts and finally i you just gotta ask it just got to ask. Why aren't they following. The example of governor kay ivey. Why aren't they following the example of mitch. Mcconnell who's actually spending campaign money to get the message out in his desk mcconnell. Where's the mass and mitch. Mcconnell has been wearing a mask ahead of all the other republicans taking this seriously. So this is joe biden said..

What if we you know in order to know who we need to blame. What if we gave them a badge that where by law. That's a good idea. Yeah that idea. At all times they've got to wear a bad color-coded like yellow. Or did i see where they actually. And i don't know that it was true when i saw some headlines or as report where they were talking about if you were vaccinated in the nfl they were going to have. Have you wear a bracelet. A different color bracelet. I don't know that that's true. Not but if that's true that's there you go right. It's a good idea. A great idea. I love it. I love i mean i say why. Don't we just make him wear a different color helmet or you know. Put something on their name tag or something on the jersey s. Yeah we gotta know who to blame and So that's great. Thank you a great idea. That's a great idea now. She didn't specifically come up with the. I had to enhance it a little bit. But she's talking about the ones we need to blame. And i'm just saying okay. We'll lend let's. Let's show everybody who it is that they should be blamed. Well i mean see director. Let's said that it was the vaccinated people that were causing the problems with joe biden. So let's get this done please. I can't think of a time where anything like that has gone. Awry can you so. We just had another eight hundred cases pop up and get rewarded with the last twenty four forty eight hours and you know i was considering getting the vaccine and all of that design. Go into people's homes sometimes for work. I'm a pest control technician and then biden comes out. We start talking like vaccine passports. You guys just moving to you just now and then biden says oh yes so everyone is going to the magazine or else and i'm just or else. What all right. Fine bring it. Let's go. i've already caught. I've already had the two months of you know living with not being able to breathe. It's fine but still but let's bring it on. I'm ready to rock and roll. Don't get told me all this exactly. All right now did i did. It was it was. It was not fun. No i'll bet not So you had the part where i mean you. You had a hard time breathing and all that. Oh yeah absolutely. Like i could you could. It was just not fun at all. So i was considering our climates. Go getting the vaccine. you know. i don't want anyone to go through this. Even though i might have a natural immunity and might not read it. And does you ever feel like you're gonna. Did you ever feel like you're gonna make it. No i mean definitely was like i was thinking. Oh my goodness this was bad. This is horrible. I've never felt like this before Like i knew how how sick i was at one hundred five degree fever awhile. For about only to do tylenol or hydrochloric win or ivermectin or anything or did you just ride it out. I have rode it out as best as i could. And i went to. I don't have health insurance and then just too stupid and too expensive. You know thirty five hundred dollars a month ago coming up. Yeah i two adam. I appreciate it man plus network break here. "I was slacking. That's my new podcast. I was i know right. i was lacking. It's actually kind of perfect all right. I'm back focused. It's time for the news fix. Let's do this. Let's do this. I'm just reeling reeling. Yeah it's an amazing companies worth by the way nine billion dollars. It's going to be a real estate company from now on. It's not going to be a tech company. But holy cow ended kennison. Okay so i got about. The news got a quickie. And it's a follow up. Actually on the thing that. I think you out in kimberly and i talked about naomi osaka and the mental health challenges. She had and i wanna talk about some miles per second. Right was he. I'm sorry i wanna talk about simone. Biles who spoiler alert. I'll give you three seconds. Turn off the podcast. One two three. She pulled herself out of competition at the olympics because of mental stress. She basically said. I wasn't there and i couldn't do it anymore. And number one the courage that takes in the moment on the biggest stage for her sport on the planet to do that. I think it's kind of amazing but also just the idea that that We're putting all this stress on on people. As just we gotta we gotta rethink that. And i just wanted to point that out as a follow up to to the conversation we had about numale soccer Number two masks are coming. Back the cdc reports financial times and many others Is set to require a recommend. I guess they're going to recommend right. guidance that the cdc gives Masks for vaccinated people as delta rises and look. We talked about it yesterday. And how You know or maybe the other day about knows yesterday. Sorry i'm just About about you know. This is a pandemic now the unvaccinated. But what happens when you get. A pandemic of the unvaccinated is that the rest of us are put more at risk. And so we got him or masks and number one amazon number to get your shots and please try to convince those of you in your orbit. Who haven't gotten their shots to do that. Even though it's really hard to convince them. That's what i got the. Yeah and just as a side note related to that yesterday. I said we are going to have to create space for people to have a change of heart take responsibility for that change of heart and then convince others in their orbit right. It doesn't mean that we cannot hold people accountable and responsible for their actions when they decide not to get a vaccine and then put everyone around them at risk and i will say that it is hard to do that though in you then see. Someone tried to make that change in that about face in the washington. Post for example. Alabama governor kay ivey and also just take a swipe at anti masking at the same time connaught. Deliver your spoonful of sugar with another spoonful of misinformation not helpful. But it's something so. I'm trying to stick with my advice yesterday But one thing that people have cited and we were actually talking about this before the show in slack. Before i was and then i was like all right. We have a show. We could totally talk about this..

"We've got to get folks to take the shot. Vaccine is the greatest weber. We have to fight kobe. There's no question about that. The data proves it. These folks are choosing a horrible lifestyle of self inflicted pain. My god that's straight. Talk there from alabama's republican governor kay ivey about unvaccinated creating pandemic within themselves. Let's bring in pulitzer prize winning columnist and associate editor of the washington. Post and msnbc political analyst eugene robinson and host of american voices on msnbc weekends menendez host of the podcast on brand with donny. Deutsch donny deutsch. Is with us and donnie. If i could just start with you Before we get into some of these editorials governor. Kay ivey i think is doing real service even though she's talking about her own constituents she's fed up and she's saying it like it is. This is your choice to get covert and die. You look really hard or where you put our after designate whether it's republican democrat because that did not feel like a spokesperson for the republican party over wa obviously there are on the republicans coming out particularly even in our own state. But i mean that's the kind of plain talk we need at this point. You know we've talked so many times on this show about. Oh what can we say. How do we say and just got to say what the people doing you know. You're killing yourselves. Could killing other people. That's it no great here. There's no two sides that his argument and you talked about a story earlier. It's about that camp in new york. I have friends whose kids are in those gas. And you know. I i think the only thing left to to kind of just talking points beyond just kind of that. Very emotional plead. The governor is like kids. How for the kids. But no governor was just poster spokesperson poster tone or how. This country needs to be There's no messing around. There's no tippy toeing. There's no all your philosophy is killing people that's it. Well you know. I think what makes it especially resonant is that she is a republican. I think the the same message would would create more division perhaps even from a democrat but this is a republican governor saying. Stop making yourself die and others as well get the vaccine. I cannot teach you common sense. My gosh i'm i'm moved by it and i hope it helps i really do. Let's look at this reason. Editorial entitled the case for vaccine mandates. This is the bloomberg editorial board arguing that hospitals nursing homes. Another businesses should require their employees to be inoculated and the board rights. Impart this in much of america. Vaccine hesitancy has turned into vaccine defiance. President joe biden should go beyond cajoling the vaccine hesitant and call on hospitals and nursing homes across the us to insist that their employees get their shots. The healthcare industry is the best place to start issuing vaccine mandates. A handful of hospital systems have already imposed them improve. They work to discourage people from getting their shots is unconscionable but it's no longer good enough to simply call on vaccine hesitant to protect themselves and others. Hospitals schools and businesses are within their rights to insist on vaccinations and ought to be doing just that. But will the problem and you see. The mayor of new york he's done a vaccine mandate among frontline workers. Or they could choose to get tested weekly and the reason again is we need full federal approval approval of the vaccine to really have a clear shot excused upon at doing this without legal implications and political implications and all sorts of things. Yeah and that's the point. Dr kavita patel was making earlier on this show and she said it has to clear that. Fda bar before all these things can be unleashed implemented and gene robinson. There was some precedents set earlier in the week. Indiana university won a court case. Because it is requiring its students to be vaccinated before they returned to campus. A group of students challenged that and it court upheld the university side of that saying no they can say that they can tell you there a public university but they can require those vaccinations. Mayor de blasio is miki said in new york. See requiring hospital workers say things makes a lot of sense to a lot of people. Nursing homes is something that people will look at and now schools as well given the fact that students under the age of twelve. We're seeing some of these camps who cannot get vaccinated are carrying this disease that the people who can ought to be vaccinated. What do you think about the idea of mandating vaccines and some of these places. Won't willie seem to me that for for the healthcare industry on a be kind of a no brainer because you're getting the potential patients at risk by not being vaccinated so It you know why would you. Why would you want to run any risk. Any chance that That you that you're adding to the burden of covert and then. An infection could could run rampant in the delta varian especially in a hospital system. That's that to me is absurd so that seems to be an brainer for a lot of other institutes universities and others that are able to require the vaccine require vaccines for measles and for other Other diseases they ought to. They ought to go ahead and require the vaccine for kobe. nineteen But i think all this will be on a firmer footing once there is full. Fda approval for the vaccines. I understand that. I can see why that is a hurdle for a lot of institutions and for some people Once that is given. I think It will be firmer sort of Pr perhaps legal ground and And perhaps in terms of public opinion T to start imposing and i guess imposing is the right word more widespread vaccine mandates. It is just absurd that we have the vaccine that keep people from dying period from kobe and not everybody is taking him. I don't get it and alesia you know given the amount of misinformation that's out there given our culture right online particularly you do have to wonder is. Fda approval really going to change a bunch of people's minds or they so set in conspiracy theories and things they've read on facebook that not fda approvals not going to change their minds on it but perhaps it will allow it to be required in some schools. For example i mean we forget all the vaccinations that for generations. Kids have had to have as a requirement to go into schools. This is not something new that as a parent who is clearly filled out all of the immunization forms of course that standard practice. I saw a heartbreaking story it went viral about hospitalised in alabama who's now seeing a spike in young patients coming in with the virus in very sick and as she's about to intimate them she tells the story of how she's about to intimate them and they say our doctor. Can i get the vaccine. Now she has to say..
