"Team's primary conduit for communications with the russian ambassador and dealt with russia on to sensitive matters during the transition period a united nations security council vote and the russian government's reaction to the united states imposition of sanctions for russian interference in the two thousand sixteen election. Despite kushner's conclusion the kislyak did not wild influence inside the russian government. The transition team turned to flynn's relationship kislyak on both issues as to the sanctions. Splint spoke by phone to katy. Mcfarland is incoming deputy to prepare for his call to kislyak. Mcfarland was with the president-elect and other senior members of the transition team at mar-a-lago at the time although transition officials at mar-a-lago had some concern about possible russian reactions to the sanctions. The investigation did not identify evidence that the president-elect asked flynn to make any request to kislyak flynn s kislyak not to escalate the situation in response to us sanctions imposed on december. Twenty nine two thousand sixteen and kislyak later reported to flynn that russia ceded to that request a united nations vote on israeli settlements on december. Twenty one twenty sixteen egypt submitted a resolution to the united nations security council calling on israel to see settlement activities in palestinian territory the security council which includes russia was scheduled to vote on the resolution. The following day there was speculation in the media. The obama administration would not oppose the resolution according to flynn. The transition team regarded the vote as a significant issue and wanted to support israel by opposing the resolution on december twenty two twenty sixteen multiple members of the transition team as well as president-elect trump communicated with foreign government officials to determine their views on the resolution and rally support to delay the vote or defeat the resolution kushner led the effort for the transition team. Flynn was responsible for the russian government minutes after an early morning. Phone call with kushner on december. Twenty two flynn called kislyak according to flynn. The resolution later that day president elect trump spoke with egyptian president abdel fattah el-sisi about the vote ultimately egypt postponed the vote on december. Twenty three two thousand sixteen malaysia new zealand senegal in venezuela re-submitted the resolution throughout the day members of the transition team continued to talk with foreign leaders about the resolution with flynn continuing to lead the outreach with the russian government through kislyak when flanagan spoke with kislyak kislyak and formed flynn that if the resolution came to a vote russia would not vote against it. "For us to have to take sadly we had no choice president trump who says the mole report cleared him of working with Russia on the twenty sixteen election is now accused of using aid to Ukraine to solicit election interference an investigation of Joe Biden and his son okay well I've read through that transcript the transcript of president trump's phone call and I've been on a number of phone calls like that I was president trump's first deputy national security adviser and was responsible for the initial Ukraine policy helping formulate I shouldn't say response will prompt the ones responsible for his policies but during those phone calls the the person who is listening and one of the they're one of the people get testimony was in the room was from he was in the White House situation room listening in on a deadline on the phone it's different when you're in the oval office you don't know what conversations happen prior to that phone call but in any event I looked at that phone ball pretty carefully and we here's what I saw the president has said a number of times he has three big concerns with Ukraine one why are you cranes the neighbors not stepping up to the plate and giving you crane assistance number two Ukraine is a very corrupt country and why should the United States pour money and material into a country where it's going to blind the pockets of corrupt officials and when trump has said those things that makes a lot of sense so when I look at the transcript he's saying we want you to investigate corruption and frankly if it if if it affects an American citizen of an American citizen is in the middle of this corruption probe to know that so would you agree with the president's argument that the whistleblower complaint that started this whole thing is based on political bias that it's it's really just politically motivated there are three things I think are kind of fishing and I think I do know the whistle blower is constable of me to mention the name but in any event there are three things that are a little fishy number one the whistle blower according to press reports was very close to the former head of the CIA John Brennan and to a number of CIA officials all of whom have come out and said recently in the last year to that Donald Trump is basically a Russian agent he's terrible person he's committed treason yada yada yada so what is the connection is that a political motivation number two there's something very fishy about the whistle blowers report in the past a whistle blower had to personally experience and personally see first hand evidence of wrongdoing but the law or the regulation was change just a week or so before this was a blowers report came out now you can just say well I heard that or somebody told me about so that's a first hand report and then the third thing that makes me very suspicious is that the whistle blower does seem to have been in contact with the Democrat chairman of the house intelligence committee either with hammer personally or with his staff to cook this whole thing up so this is a political trick to try to discredit trump to try to impeach him I don't think we should go down this road is the nation I don't care if you're a Republican or a Democrat or I don't know a vegan free but you should not go down this path and less we are sure that there is hard evidence that merits the United States being put in jeopardy for a year maybe they'll was it I don't want to use the word unwise but maybe politically and wise I guess for the president to ask you crane to investigate corruption at such a sensitive time having had the Muller report hanging over his head well I think attraction has for it let's investigate corruption any point because that's where it is did you say some sort of silly things probably on why things you may want to take back sure but look at Donald Trump is not what he says that counts I know that Washington cares only about what people say they never care about what they do but watch what he does okay so he said I want you to investigate corruption okay they're doing it Joe one age you but I want to make sure that your neighbors are doing the work as what trump is the only guy eighteen and were there some on wise words perhaps but in the greater scheme of things it's a drop in the bucket in an ocean I want to ask you about the former ambassador to Ukraine Marie Ivanovic who has in kind of a central figure in all this at least from the standpoint that she seems to have been considered a very long time well respected diplomat essentially ousted you know from this post she told lawmakers she felt threatened and people were looking to hurt her hearing something like that does it make it any harder to support this president to support the administration let's go back and what is the role of an ambassador United States ambassador to any country is to represent the interests of the United States who gets to choose to those masters are the president of the United States the president the SS was elected by the American people who wanted a change in American foreign policy the ambassador to Ukraine who does have a very good reputation she was part of the old policy toward Ukraine and if she couldn't adapt to the fact that the president wanted to take the country in a new direction and wanted a new relationship with Ukraine that's not that's her problem with the concern of this you know a regular back channel process that was being set up by Rudy guiliani through that through the state department essentially to dig up dirt on a political opponent is how the critics frame it but because some state department and national security officials national security council members have testified there necessarily think there was anything illegal on the call between the two presidents trump insulin ski but they're not comfortable with diplomatic channels being used in the way they are being used in the past me say for example in the Nixon administration Henry Kissinger who is the national security adviser was a back channel in conducting our negotiations with the Chinese with the Vietnamese during the Vietnam War and a certain extent with the with the Soviet Union channels are used they tend to be government officials when they are used I really think that in in the trump administration which is so unusual your doesn't follow any of the rules because Donald Trump is not a career Washington guy he's a businessman from New York he has a different approach if he has used other people to represent him or other people who claim to represent him I think what's what trump says not what a bunch of people who say I represent trump or this is what I think you should be doing watch what he does why do we get to hear from Katy McFarland now you're essentially breaking your silence on on all of the things that have happened in the past couple of years why now well I was trump's first deputy national security adviser I was instrumental in setting up his foreign policy in the early days and then I left I left for a number of reasons and I was also wrapped up in a mother investigation wrapped up in it some congressional investigations they're all behind me now and I when it happened I decided I'm out of here and I for a year and a half went off the grid I went to rural Scotland in the Hebrides and I try to figure all this out what's happening to America and is is this the end is this the beginning of the end of our country anyway I wrote a book it's coming out in about two months this call revolution trump Washington we the people and I trace back why I had a band in the studio stabbed broke with the establishment over foreign policy issues I described my experiences in the trump administration please I come to a really weird conclusion I'm like everybody else in the country's wringing their hands saying it's the end of the world I actually think it's the beginning because throughout American history we have had populace revolutions beginning with the American civil the American Revolutionary War in every forty years we have someone we have them because the country is a dynamic place immigration demographic changes business change as technology changes we're constantly changing government on the other hand is stale government is status quo it protects his interest so that every forty years the Selby become so disconnected government and and the people that we have political revolutions at the ballot box I think that's what we're going through now and I think it is America's greatest strength because it allows us we the people to take back governess to this country and leave the people are sovereign Winfrey invent ourselves and that what that is what makes us great innovative creative and always looking to the future former deputy national security adviser and author KT McFarland look forward to the booking thank you very much again here thank you make the right choice for the morning drive with cheesy and Elliot weekday mornings talk radio sixty eighty W. CDM are.

"On change from NPR news. This is all things considered. I'm Elsa Chang. And Mary Louise Kelley today. President Trump approved a disaster declaration in the state of Nebraska where flooding has already caused an estimated billion dollars in damage roads bridges homes farms, businesses, crops, livestock are all damaged or lost Nebraska. Governor Republican Pete Ricketts is on the line. Now, governor welcomed all things considered. Thank you very much for having me on does this disaster declaration that the president has just signed off on does it match. What you asked for? Well, it is a great start where we're looking we asked for an expedited process and while FEMA still ask to go. Inspect someone's counties as far as the individual systems. This is getting allow us to start working with FEMA right away to start working on the public infrastructure. We have to fix as well as some of the individual assistance and some of the hardest area. So we're very very pleased. How many of your counties in the state are still under a state of emergency? Actually, we've got seventy nine of our ninety three counties. So just about eighty five percent of our counties in the state have been impacted. This is the most widespread natural disaster. We've ever experienced in Nebraska. Yeah. So now that this money has been approved this federal money. What will it mean for your state? What we use it for most urgently. Well, what allow us to do is start working with FEMA on our plans to repair the public infrastructure. We've got about two hundred miles of roads that cannot be used until the repaired we've got about sixteen bridges that we have to repair their unusual right now. So there's the public infrastructure part, but it will also allow us to start working on the individual assistance. So we've got over two thousand people were out of our homes or two thousand homes have been damaged. We got three hundred forty one businesses that are damaged or lost. So it'll help us with that individual assistance. It also allows us to bring small business administration in here to start working with those businesses and homeowners with regard to loan. So again, really helps us kick off recovery process. Yeah. I mean, the hearing from what you're telling me that your state is very. Much still right in the thick of this. But that billion dollar figure that I mentioned the estimated billion dollars from damage does that come close to reflecting the true cost. Well, that's our initial preliminary estimate, I expect that number will change because right now, we've just estimated some of the damage, you know, the four hundred million dollars in cow calf losses foreign forty million dollars in crop losses. The three hundred forty nine million dollars in infrastructure as well eighty five million dollars in business and homes. That's all preliminary that gives us to a billion. But when we have time to go in and assess that number may go up and other things like insurance may help bring that number down. You mentioned that this is the worst such event that your state has faced, but this flooding comes just eight years after the last billion dollar flood. Are there lessons learned from that last flood to apply to this one or or to help you God forbid plan for the next? Well, that was a little bit different. From the standpoint, it only in fact, it impacted the Missouri. And I think there was some issues with regard to how that. Occurred in this case what we've got is the ground was very frozen. There's a lot of snow on the ground. And then we got the reins as well as a blizzard in our panhandle. And really what that meant. It was a lot of water just rushed into our river systems. And so we hit record press in river systems like the a loop the elk horn, Missouri where we'd never experienced that all at once. So certainly there's going to be saying that we learned with regard to how we prepare our levees that will going forward. But I just don't know how we could have anticipated this much water coming to ours into our state all at once and to the point you just made about levies and preparing for the next time as you look at what needs to get done and fixed quite urgently. What can you give me give me an example of a couple of the projects, you're planning to prioritize? Well, one of the things we know is that there may be a weather system moving in in a couple of weeks that may bring more snow and rain, and that could potentially put more pressure on the Missouri river. So we've got just a couple of weeks here to try and shore up our levee system along the Missouri before that weather hits. How we also have a lot of roads. The I mentioned in these are roads that allow people to commute some for example or kids can't get to school because bridges are out. So those will be the types of things are department of transportation is prioritizing Nebraska, Governor, Pete Ricketts. Thank you so much for your time. And and good luck issue as researcher with us. Great. Thank you very much are people resilient. I know we'll get through this together. This should sound familiar controversy over government officials using personal E mail accounts and messaging apps to conduct official business. This time though, the officials in question are President Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner and the president's daughter Ivanka Trump among others. The head of the house oversight committee says the lawyer for both Kushner, Ivanka Trump told the committee that the two of them have used personal communication tools for work and PR's. Tim Mack joins us now. Hey, Tim hitter. So we should note that this information is coming from a democrat that committee, chairman Elijah Cummings. What does through exactly what Cummings is saying here? Okay. So the house oversight committee head a meeting with Kushner's lawyer Abbe Lowell in December and says that during this meeting the attorney confirmed that Kushner has used and continues to use what's app as part of his official duties in the White House. That's the communication staff when asked if Kushner communicated with foreign leaders. Using WhatsApp law simply said that Kushner, quote, head communications with people outside the United States. And when asked if classified information was ever discussed using the app Kushner's lawyer simply said, quote, that's above my pay grade, not exactly answering the question the law requires that senior officials like Jared Kushner, preserve their official communication's. His lawyer said that he is in compliance with the law indus-, oh by taking screen shots of his what's up conversations and sending them to his White House E mail or to the national Security Council but law contents he has never confirmed any conversation between Kushner and foreign leaders. Okay. So that's the Kushner story what about others in the White House like Ivanka Trump? Well, so according to Cummings law also told the house oversight committee that avant Trump gets work emails on her private account, and that she doesn't Ford those emails to our official account unless she response to it her turning now says that he was referring to earlier emails to a personal. Count and stress that she now follows proper record keeping rules. The committee also claims in another situation to have evidence showing that Katy McFarland the former deputy national security adviser used a personal AOL dot com. Email address to talk about the transfer of sensitive nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia McFarland was apparently talking to a personal friend of President Trump's while working on that issue and Steve Bannon, he's the former White House chief strategist he also received an Email about this Saudi nuclear plan. So his personal Email account all these allegations here sound a lot like the criticism Republicans leveled against Hillary Clinton for using a private Email server when she was secretary of state how fair is it to compare the situation with Clinton to this these situations here is that the same law that governs both of these situations. But it's the same principle that senior officials in the administration needs to conduct business on their professional working mills, and they shouldn't be doing professional work through price. Channels. This is generally done to ensure that official communications and records are properly stored and archived. It sounds like both Clinton through her use of a private E mail server and now senior White House officials have run afoul of these rules. So what is the White House saying about all of this? So I'd has hasn't said a taught about this. They they did say that they've received the letters the reviewing the letters, and they will be providing some response at some point. But Kushner's lawyer says that his words were twisted as I said earlier Lowell said that he never specifically said the Kushner spoke to any foreign leaders using WhatsApp, and he also says the Kushner and vodka are both currently in compliance with relevant rules. Okay. That's NPR's. Tim mack. Thanks to him. Thanks a lot. You're listening to all things considered from NPR news. There was a time in summer Brennan's life when she wore high heels almost every day Brennan was working at the United Nations at the time a place as she describes it of suits and ties skirts and silk blouses freshly shined wingtips, and yes, high heels the heels were critical aspirin saw it to being the kind of woman professional feminine poised the kind of woman who marched those halls of power with confidence Vernon is now a writer, and she explores all this in her new book high heel, it's a meditation on beauty and power and stilettos summer. Vernon welcome. Thank you so much as to in the intro, you used to wear high heels every day, and you tell a story about falling toppling over wearing four inch heels, and the killer detail was that, of course, you were on your way to a UN event about gender equality. Yes. It was. And it wasn't the first time I've found down in high heels. He was living in New York. I commuted in them. I was running up and down subway stairs. So it's a kind of thing that is bound to happen eventually. But that one felt particularly poignant I think because like you say because of the circumstances. And I thought gosh, you know, many of our modern articulations of feminism say we can choose whatever type of womanhood femininity we want. But sometimes it's also interesting to take a closer look at some of these choices were making in single bit strange. Why am I wearing this thing that's dangerous in this way? Yeah. I mean, this is this is the undeniable truth is that high heels cripple you they make it hard to run you also I feel stronger. I feel empowered when I'm wearing them only two, and I should say also say in the book, you know, of course, not every woman in these types of work settings where high heels and even at the UN's mantha power who was the UN ambassador for the United States at the time random on the building wearing sneakers a lot of the time. And she certainly authoritative, but that idea that you're supposed to present. This kind of image was still very much present for all the people listening who are really happy wearing their sensible non high heeled shoes. What were you to book about something? That is no one could make the argument frivolous not necessary. I think it's not frivolous. Obviously because I wrote a book about it. But I think the fact that even if it's not something that everybody wears or is obligated to wear. Some people are obligated to wear them, or at least expected to and those people usually women, and it's worth looking at why that is and it ended up being very interesting focus point for me about all these issues that are coming up right now with feminism and women's rights in terms of where desires meet politics and a desire for femininity meets a desire for freedom and the points in which maybe these don't always sit very comfortably together. Yeah. You're making me think of a point in the book where you write about Hillary Clinton in twenty sixteen. She was running for president she at the presidential debates war Kitin hills. Which first of all just explain what that is. So for those who aren't familiar a kitten hill is a very thin. He'll that's that's not. Very tall. And you write that. This was the only thing she could have worn the only acceptable choice. Why? Because I think we still have a very narrow definition of what we find acceptable for women to seem both feminine and authoritative, but a high stiletto heels ser- to youthful and sexy for older woman from essential commander in chief will exactly right, and sometimes we're more tolerant of some of these styles on women when they're powerful, but not the most powerful person in the room..
