"On today's episode. We are talking space walls as if we didn't have enough to worry about. It's a with earth there's going concern about. How do you police the planets and prevent outbreaks of conflict in the skies above our heads. That's a big thing i. It's our columnists panel. No i think of this week is danny. Finkelstein is off What he's doing scuba diving. Assuming you've got david in of the times and katya balls from the spectator. Let's start with This sort of glowing idea of there being tensions between Voice johnson and wishy sooner can what the power of the mo up to. You've been looking at this polling which looks at how boys johnny's doing competitive other His cabinet colleagues. Meanwhile lo and behold. She soon experts of the times that i go back to the office to get on. What's really going on behind the scenes. Casey i think definitely some tensions between racine in johnson state. The obvious things. Like spending. And i think we're gonna see more and more of that has the spending I think ultimately the prime minister won't send more money than the trumpster is topped with. And therefore we're going to be heading into a row lively debate over how they do that. Then there's an issue in the sense that because still writing fatty high intense approval ratings red. Boris johnson is seeing his take. A dip is now playing to widen authoritative of. Who will next haredi to be even those. Don't carney of acres eight. There's no expect to win anytime. See and therefore. I think richie scenic finds himself in the bushes situation the anything he does which is slightly interesting fools into he's opening and recent home polls which show a Favorite at the next read endlessly fooling on pessina pre-vote a not helpful. I would say number seven right dave. Maybe johnson shouldn't just love this given the he he maybe has some experience of when applied five minutes to number ten has to put up with someone else's the maneuvers. Something theresa may and david cameron had a long experience of i'm thinking when you talking about the mills and boon earlier. What would be on my title. Was i promised you the rose garden and it's about how about how a chancellor and prime minister a secretly in love but they want to throw everybody off the scent because it's really necessary to and actually rashid embarrass overnights. But they want desperately need. Katie suggests there daggers drew. Sighs everybody i think this is a very very kind of modern story in and and the contrast between them will provide the counterpoint. Now i was. I was entertained. Very much by Katie's piece not least because it contained the sentence. The westminster rumor mill Phrase as the westminster rumor mill. Actually because i never quite i once was a sketch. Right and people talk about the westminster. I never understood what the west and did it matter. And then we've referred to this poll of conservative members done by conservative home. Which i think has some kind of and i think how many members are there. What are we actually talking. By the time. I got to the end of these questions. I realized i didn't really have any useful opinion about it at all myself. I just had a series of questions about what it all meant. I think the property when you were scheduled to the west westminster boomer mail. Was the people talking about david and you didn't know anything about it. I think that's quite unlikely. I mean i was. I was in westminster for for example in this shows how long of the day that the jeffrey how speech about about margaret thatcher on. I don't think anybody care very much about me. Then it's gone katie answered. David's questions. I think the westminster rumor mill is effectively. Being at what people are saying privately in person. What's that they should be writing publicly about much more serious issues and tends to be what people want to talk about. But they can't she getaway between the about in an more formal setting because it is petty. Is there any. I'm gonna suppose the thing is that the issue was putting as a sort of as a stooge really. Saudi jaffe is chancellor just over a year ago because of dominic seems like a long time ago. Dominic cummings wanted more control over the treasury and to sack sausage the spots and this was amazingly one of the big stories in the in the whole country and so Wishy soon that goes along with it and far from being. He's basically uncertain. Unstoppable untouchable new. Casey i mean he's on sacco. Burn until the sacked radio isn't he offered forced johnson to get rid of his second chancellor and i take thing anyone it at a decent grit bit situation wet. Obviously dominic cummings every time. He speaks and is critical. The prime minister critical of matt. Hancock perform house secretary. Only has praised knack. I wouldn't say that helps relations between number ten number eleven. But i think we all seeing fray his way to around a bit he is now. Am i think feels very established as chance and i think that means we're going to get more these interventions and because receive next to the land administrative move away also rising in terms of getting his agenda fruit. You for an aid. That was a treasury plan together. Free the coleman's and it worked as number ten. Keep having to make these utans. And i just think that is creating a little bit of bad which we only see bubble up now and then but starting to making something that could get less. I mean that that definitely rings true. Doesn't it because we know that the big a really difficult decisions are mostly financial ones which which is a come and we also know that johnson's instinct is to say yes absolutely up to that. Spends money on that gun governor ridge new airport et cetera. Find the money Bish bash ball. She can all be done and then along. Come somebody to say to him..

"Past podcasts. If you're publishing your e books wide then you're going to need to make sure you avoid katie piece select because when you go onto katie piece select the means that you gotta keep your e book exclusive to the amazon platform and it cannot be distributed anywhere outside of katie p. Okay so now. We got that one out the way publishing the book wide though. No katy b select. You can put it wherever you heart desires. Remember it's got the is. Go buck wild. There's so many platforms so simple to publish to a lot of them. Everything from smash words the drafted digital and published drive and everything else in between if you plan to publish more than one book. One book th ringers spark. I would say in a year so we'll say two to three books within a given course of your i would recommend you look into my preferred platform and place that i really liked. The nonprofit organization called the alliance of independent authors having an ally membership allows you up to five free coupon codes per month utilize ingram spark five per month. Mean even if you were to do say four per month over the course of a year. That's forty eight. Titles without those coupons or having to track down it's about fifty dollars per upload about twenty four hundred dollars was put that stuff adds up after all. Yeah ingram sparks not free to upload unless you have these coupon code beginning them through ally makes it so so much more simple and their membership runs right about one hundred twenty per year. "San Diego. I'm Steve Walsh. This story was produced by the American Homefront Project of Public Media collaboration that reports an American military life and veterans. Funding comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Border Patrol agents have been rescuing many migrants this summer, but the dangerous state face are expected to get worse. Katie piece Angela Co chaired a reports from El Paso. The West TEC says borderland can be brutal during the summer. There's the extreme heat and the high water as monsoon season brings heavy rain. Last flips. That's a big problem. Agent Jose Hell is with more star, which stands for Border Patrol search trauma and rescue. Border Patrol agents in the El Paso area are rescuing more and more migrants clinging to life. We encountered three females like in really bad shape, which is they were really ba hydrates. So we have to provide him with I V fluid to actually bring them up. If not, I'll think that they would like more than 200 migrants have died since October along the Southwest border. With many deaths happening in recent weeks, Border Patrol agents have rescued about 7000 migrants this year compared to a little more than 5000 during all of last year. At a recent press conference at the foot of Mount Cristo Rey, a rugged smuggling route. El Paso Border Patrol agents talked about the dangers of crossing the border illegally. In many cases, smugglers lead unsuspecting migrants to their deaths with false promises, says agent he'll. All they want is your money and so most of time, it's going to be all rise. Like Oh, it's going to be a short walk. It's going to be just take enough water for one day, which is sometimes three days, Sheriff Oscar Carrillo sees the deadly consequences in Culberson County, a smuggling hotspot. The sheriff in 10 deputies have been busy this summer. Certain rescues and recoveries. Unfortunately, uh, seems like we're spending a lot of time doing that. The Congressman, County Sheriff's Office has recovered 13 bodies so far this year. One recent case stands out for the sheriff, the one with Raul and his son that one just peace to my mind a little bit more so than the others. A few weeks ago, Correo responded to a call from a rancher. About two people left to die in 109 degree heat. It was Raul and his 15 year old son. They had crossed the border with a small group. The pair was abandoned by their smuggler. The sheriff Astro what happened as he drove him to a waiting ambulance? He recorded this audio to document the case. We're not using rules. Last name for security reasons. Yeah. Can you roll told the sheriff after they were left behind by their smuggler, he tried to get help by walking along roadways, hoping they would be spotted by Border Patrol agents or a drone. By the time the rancher discovered them, his son Christian was dead man. That's that's going to be hard to live with. Tell you that the guilt Raul and his wife had left Ecuador when the boy was a toddler to work in the US and send money home. Recently, Raul returned to bring the teen across the border so he could be reunited with his parents. After he was released from the hospital. Raul, like most migrants, was sent back to Mexico under the pandemic Health order known as Title 42. Sheriff Dario says the situation on the border is made worse because the smugglers leading people into death traps faced no consequences and then just seen the feds passing on. Prosecution prosecuting a lot of the curiosity is and stuff like that. And, uh, you know, that's discouraging. Even so, he continues to document cases and collect evidence. If there is any evidence left behind those empty water containers. That is that is heartbreaking. There was an empty water bottle on the ground near the body of Christian Rolls. 15 year old son. "That's crazy right. This means as i've shared before that you can become an amazon bestselling author without selling a single stink and copy. I know crazy right craziness doesn't end there you. Obviously when someone checks it out they start reading it you get paid per page. That's red so it makes the deal. A little bit better center wheel increase your ab sr your amazon bestseller ranked which means that you will be more discoverable and served more readers and then hopefully make more sales nine katie. Select a well. That's there exists. Essential response oh. Well you're on your own you go ahead and you can publish it wherever you want to. We don't care but we're not gonna give you the same perks we give to the people that want to stay exclusive and loyal to us reason number two. We're going to go right back into the katie piece. Select well katie piece like distribution mistakes so this is the part if you do publish wide with your e book. Pay very close attention. So let's start out. Let's say you have gone enrolled your book and katie select and it's an agreement that lasts for ninety days at a time in his automatic really renewed unless you de-selected inside your kdp dashboard. Okay let's say you de-select evil fill your ninety day obligation and you decide to publish everywhere. What happens if you go I really like katie. Select i wanna go back into it. That means you've gotta a your e book on all those other sites that you've done away from amazon and you must wait for it to be fully removed before you op that back into select in fact there was a nightmare story by a fellow youtuber and really cool guy derek murphy. Look them up fantastic. Youtube channel has a lot of great insights. He shared one time that he had made the mistake of coming back to the comforts of katie. Peace lecture he d listed all of his different avenues but herein lies the problem he missed one tiny distributor one tiny distributor. And it didn't take them long before they detected that in their system and they're like a slap the hand and i think it came as severe as like he might have got his account suspended and the ability to use katie piece elect Pretty much up in the air. I think everything Out derek's doing better but either way created a scary situation in which he thought he was gonna lose it as account he lost the ability to use katie p select for temporary amount of time. Always double check when going back to katy p select why.

"Tip final tip when you're considering katie piece elect and kindle villa. What your value is. How much do you feel you bring the table. And how much do you think you should be compensated for that. If you're just looking for an avenue to just publish 'cause you love the craft of writing this might be for you but if you're the type of person that doesn't really want to grind it out for say twenty five cents for every purchase or twenty two cents There's also the risk versus reward because katie p select is a proven commodity. Many people have made a lucrative living going to kdp select and some continue to do that whereas some people don't even katie piece left at all they just do it on their own and the wide but we know the proven we. It's all about the devil you know. And so with kindle vela. They're really the devil. We don't know just yet so be very careful. It's going to be about risk versus reward. Because you're probably going to have to write about three plus episodes. Get that all queued up before launches so that way you can have people reading and binging your content and you can keep up with that demand Really there's not too much of a risk if you ask me because you're only out a time. Let's say you took all the time to write. You got it edited you gotta proof-read you got it formatted you gotta cover for and such like that. Let's just say for instance you find. Kim avella doesn't work out for you. All right on. Enroll it from kindle villa and move it over to katie pete and trout katie piece select or maybe even publish it. Why there's so many options you can do here. It's really no negative in my opinion. Hey folks do me a favor subscriber. "No exclusivity agreement for the print book or the audio book when you enroll and katie piece elect for that given e book eric. What kindle vela ooh boy so it's been about a few weeks now and everybody's still kinda buzzing about it and ask me my thoughts about kindle vela essentially the kindle vela system is an app based system for the customers it has not launched yet right. Now it's only a open in beta and available to authors and self publishers and it essentially is a six hundred to five thousand word episodic short read with an exclusivity agreement very similar to katy piece lacked. It actually is even exclusive firm katie piece select. Meaning that when you publish a short read to kindle vela you are not to take that publish shut on katie piece. Elect conversely speaking if you've already published that short read over on katie p in katie piece elect kindle valid does not want it. They only want fresh new content. None of this stuff. That's been spun Her some ambiguous stuff. And i go into detail about that in this past week. But let's just push forward here. Let's talk about the format it's available in all right so with katie piece elect could about anything. You want all right doc doc. Pd pdf e. pob For a limited time. Moby you get so many things you can upload katie p select that is not an issue if you wanna have a ton of images inside your book. You can do that. If you wanna have gramps in bullet points in emojis a you can do that can novella. Not so much. You can come with a doc or docx ex. But you're gonna essentially have to copy and paste that over into their online editor. This is not your normal p type situation. Yes there's many things they share in common especially when it comes to uploading the data but beyond that formatting happens within the dashboard itself and they're only supporting bold underlying in italics that's it no graphs charts no images nothing fancy so they really are catering to fiction authors and more importantly if they're catering to fiction authors are to fiction readers so with all that being said does that mean that nonfiction is out here in the cold no is actually one category out of dozens of categories for nonfiction. Is it one category. So they still will take that. It's episodic all right pushing forward. What about the perks with katie piece. Elect you get the five day.

"Your book sales are going to be very delayed by a few days. Sometimes especially if someone's ordered print books and then other times they're just not even tracking it for whatever reason so you're gonna wanna make sure that you always double check everything you can look at your total sales of a given title or titles general doing ads on all of them versus the amazon ads reported. Sales had an old friend of mine. Big out to him We'll just say. His name's darren and darren and i used to talk about this and i used to cringe when he'd say well i noticed they had some sales increase way more but it's not being tracked as ads in my ads dashboard. I was like now. You can't count those. Were organic and you know erin. Actually wasn't inaccurate. Actually if you see a correlation between running ads in book sales increasing than probably make pretty assumption that those ads are working even if it's not being tracked accurately through amazon ads with that being said anytime you have an ad and you're looking at it and you're going oh my gosh. The acosta's two hundred percent. Now though i get no that's it. Now i'm out i'm out. Don't kill that. Never kill an ad without knowing this first knowing okay. Am i getting a return on my investment. You could be putting in. Let's say ten dollars an adspend. Well let's say that you're actually bringing in twenty dollars in gross. She's me a net profits with the net profits coming in at twenty dollars. Ten dollars will lead you put in one brought back to you pay for the ads and you got money left over. That's not too bad so never kill an ad. I now next thing is i is perfect. Segue over just talking about this. If you've got a series of books. And i in series. It's always good idea if you're running an add to the first in series that you look at your read through meaning that if it's in the katie piece select program. How many pages.

Should You Publish a Book on Amazon Only or Publish Wide?

"Yeah. Are we're going to talk about Amazon and publishing wide. What exactly is publishing? Why before we go into things we here's some people's publishing. Why was that mean, what do you mean? Isn't it publishing? Why when you go Amazon, not necessarily that's just going in one particular avenue when you publish wide you're utilizing every resource and platform, you can't get your content into as many hands as possible. Some people make quite a living at it and other people try to bubbas line in. They don't do. So. Well, so. Can't we publish wide? Anyway, is there any kind of limitations were going to kind of suss that out because? Yeah, we can publish wide technically on e books print and audio books. But the latter will the first and the ladder of the three the exception is e books any books enrolled in the Katie p select program cannot be published. Why because you're doing an agreement with kindle direct publishing that says this will stay exclusive to your platform. So when you agree to that that ninety day period, your e book is locked in. And should you try to test your luck? And I know many authors of done this. They've tried to publish elsewhere. While still inside the kindle direct publishing program a slick program excuse me, and it was on discovers it. They have you know, some type of software out there. That's probably crawling the interwebs and looking out of the stores, and then checking the content and when they find that it's being published elsewhere despite being in an exclusive con. Attract they pull everything I know. Derek Murphy, actually, a great great guy contin create over on YouTube that actually shared some of his personal woes because he accidentally had opted into the Katie piece select program. Well, actually purposely did it, but there was another area that he'd had it published wide. And he thought it was delisted, but it wasn't delisted. So Amazon came in and was like, that's it you're out and they pulled Katy select from him. And I don't think he had hold off for about a year you'd have to look that up. Right. The other exception of exclusively is going to be a c x. And if you do the agreement of the forty percent royalty program than you're or -greeing to keep your audible content through audiobook creation exchange. Now, there's the twenty five percent model. I would say that if you ever want to go publish wide you may want to consider twenty five percent. In fact, there are other by the way, there's others inside the game. I get a lot of people that are outside the US or outside US UK, Canada and Ireland the distribution areas that say, okay, I can't set up an account with ACS. That's okay. You've got find a way Boyce's, and you also have authors Republic those other two can honor foreign account. So just kind of FYI off the side. But any rate with Brent you much, it's it's any persons game. You're allowed to publish white anywhere. I don't know of any exceptions to exclusively clause in any website, at least to my knowledge right off the top of my head. So for the sake of conversation inside this particular podcast. We're going to focus on the book, so who should publish wide as the real question because not everyone should there are some people that would do best to stay exclusive to Amazon Katie p for their e books, and there's others that would do even better for themselves if they went wide, so the people who. Want to reach a wider audience, should publish wide. Don't limit yourself to Katie p select I would say get if you wanna get in as many hands as possible. Don't limit yourself to Katie select now people who don't care about Katie select they see that they're like, I don't want my book being lent anybody and getting cents on the dollar four pages. Read in there's some people that really truly believe that Katy select is highway robbery. I I'm not going to disagree with them. I'm not going to agree with them. Because you know, it's got its pros and cons, and we're not gonna be discussing the pros and cons of Katie select right now, and then there's also the other a lot of people who don't get a substantial boost from Katie piece elect. So I always recommend to newbies in anyone that really doesn't have a berm grasp on the fundamentals, or at least making about one thousand dollars or more per month in this particular business. I would say that is not a substantial earning. So if you've got a book. On there. And no one's checking it out. There's no page reads. There's no point you staying exclusive or let's say that you do have in rolled and you're getting marginal page flips. And it's influencing the rank, but there's no sales coming in. Then you may want to pull it out Katy b select program and go wide,

How to Delete Digital Ghosts of Your Old Accounts

"This is tech news briefing im Tanya, boosters reporting from the newsroom in New York with a warning about digital, ghosts, as we face constant reminders that our personal data is pretty much scattered all over the internet. The journals, Katie Finley reminds us that deleting. Our old accounts is probably a good idea. She walks us through how after these tech headlines. Facebook has taken down hundreds of US pages, spreading false or misleading political content ahead of the midterm elections, marking one of the social media networks most aggressive efforts to stop misinformation spread primarily by Americans. Some of the pages being taken down include right wing news, which had more than three million followers as well as left-wing pages like resistance and reverb, press Facebook, added. The sites were taken down because of violations of behavior, not their content. NVIDIA, the GP you manufacturer for gamers that his emerged as the hottest chipmaker for a I and your friendly neighborhood. Autonomous vehicle pilot project is launching Rapids, an open source platform for data science and machine learning. And according to the journal CEO blog partners on the platform include IBM and Hewlett Packard. East sports. The world of professional video gaming is looking more and more like other sports. These days case in point, professional gamers are getting very serious about working out. The journal looks into a rising era of professional sports where gamers are adopting a life of physical training. Squat jumps ginger smoothies and yoga with big sponsors prize money and fan bases. Teams are also advocated players on ergonomics and hiring personal chefs and the potential for gaming injuries on the rise most frequently in the risks hands and fingers. The journals Timothy k, Martin has more on how the sports universe is further promoting a healthier lifestyle coming up how to delete the digital ghosts of your old accounts in era of increasingly vulnerable, personal data, a look at how to reduce your exposure. Be recent revelations of exposed Google plus data and compromised Facebook security serve as a stark reminder that many of us have a long trail of digitized information out there. Often in accounts, we don't use much anymore or kind of forgot even existed, no offense, ALL yahu and hotmail. And did you know my space still exists? We haven't even gotten into things like Craigslist, but not to where you help is on the way actually. And it comes by way of Katie. Been Lee joining us from San Francisco Katie. So glad we ran into you. Obviously, we're all feeling a little bit vulnerable. What Facebook and Google have on us is one thing. But when you start to think about the years of cleanup, we need to do it could get disturbing, but we need to start somewhere. So let's start with with Facebook's favorite company right now. Google Google plus leak is still pretty fresh. You know, the joke has been made, no one uses it, but most people have accounts and don't even note. So for Google. Especially a lot of people that I talked to just even in my life where like, oh, I didn't think I had a profile, and then I checked and sure enough. I have one and this is because there was a period of time where Google was requiring users to create a profile in order to do other things like post to YouTube was one of the examples. So yeah, so it's fairly straightforward and easy to to shut that one down and Google is shutting down Google plus for consumers over the next ten months. So they will be getting rid of them, but it's good to just be doing this. You know, I think of it is like spring cleaning in the fall. So you know, start with Google plus, and then you know you're gonna wanna move onto all the other ones that you've forgotten about. Let's move onto Facebook. A lot of people have been having these hearts, two hearts with themselves about whether they deleted. I'm actually not on it, and I thought I deleted my account, not so I realized idea activated it another loophole consider. So what should we know? This is so common. I mean for people to. Think that they've deleted it only to learn that they've deactivated at. And you know, part of this is probably because when you go to Facebook help pages about how to do this, they, you know, the de-activation information is is higher up than the deletion information because they would prefer to keep you as a user. So deactivating your account doesn't actually do much. It makes it so people can't search for you and you know your profile won't show up if if I were to type in your name, but all your data is is still there. It's it's almost like I dunno snoozing your account almost in really just doesn't have that much of an effect in the sense of, you know, nothing's gone, deleting, just take some extra steps and you know you wanna I, I think it's a good idea to download your data file before you delete because there might, I mean a lot of people, but on Facebook for years and years now and might have information in there that they don't want to get rid of. So you know, there's a fairly straightforward process in terms of finding were to download your data and then the vile will arrive in your Email inbox. And it comes really quick. I've done this multiple times and done stories about what information you'll find in there by downloaded my data yesterday and it arrived in my Email inbox within a few minutes. So that's a really quick process. And then you know, you find the delete button and actually delete after you've done that, though. Facebook does give you thirty days to change your mind affectively. So you just want to be careful about, like if you've made the decision that you want to delete permanently and you've got like password information and log information saved in your browser or like if you type in FAA see something and my, you know, pop up, log you in and then that would affectively undo the deletion process. If it's within thirty days of when you cancelled your account, could to know you came up with a really solid list. I encourage listeners to check out katie's piece at wsj.com plush tech because there's a lot we can. There's a whole rabbit hole we could fall into in terms of cleanup here. One thing I want to make sure we hit upon is our Email accounts. It's been a lot of years. Some of us more. Than others have opened many Email accounts. What's one way we can really tackle the wealth of you know accounts that may have come our way and gone our way. I mean, once one step would be if you have a, if you have a password manager to go through and look at the list of saved Loggins if you've been using one for a while, you might have quite a few, you know, Email accounts and other social media accounts and website accounts and all that. And then also I found like one of the best things to do is just typing and welcome to in your various Email, inboxes, find different things that you've signed up for, and then you can kind of start making a list of your own. But I mean, if it's mostly like if you think about it, you know if you haven't used an Email account and years and years, there's just not really a good reason to keep it open. I mean, it's different if you maintain separate spam accounts or accounts where you want, you know everything to go that you don't. You know, that's kind of nonessential, but these these really old ones, there's just not much of a good reason to have it lying around and a security. Researcher who has spoke with recommended for you know any account that's got any kind of personal information for it that you wouldn't want to get out there that just changed the information to like Demi information before you actually delete it. And the reason for this is that you know, he says there's a strong likelihood that companies don't wipe all the data. So they might have like databases of a database of closed accounts. And if there was say a, you know a breach of that company or that website that you know the data on the closed accounts could include your own. So it's just an extra step. You can take to protect yourself and you know to make it so that if there is a breach on a site that you've stopped using and they did have that data in there, the information that
