"And I was like, oh, I'm gonna get some Lakers tickets. So we, you know, so we go to the games as opposed to what I really need. It was to just go to his crib. Unless just sit on challenges talk. Well, it's. Just specifically Panama. Yeah. I thing that that definitely prevent me from making that move is that I you know, when we first met, and we first started ESPN, I wasn't in the best place financially. I feel you and you know, I I definitely noticed some like some hesitation in that hesitation was born out of like an embarrassment, right? Where I know he's like working on Capitol Hill making six. Yeah. You know easily. Yeah. On Capitol Hill, and I'm like Ican by first substituting teacher, then we're gonna. The most made in a year before I was thirty was maybe like thirty two thirty three. That's right. There are a lot of things that are prevent myself from doing in those years because I didn't want people to be as aware of my own circumstance. Right. Like do. But do you do you? Do you think? Do you worry that you could ever be in place again where you making thirty two thousand dollars a lesson? Don't know what if Email Phil embarrassed about how much you are quote, unquote worth in this culture. I you know, what I think that's one of things. Gary so much Dowling thing about it. It's it's a fair like. I don't know like aliens attack or some like it is so hits meals. That's like a primal level that I'll even bother or even worse than aliens like hell. At definitely think about death more. I think about like just terrible calamities. Does the I think about fish since you start making money as I start making money since I have a family chill. Yeah. I am like in a constant state of like petrol state of just of just hoping doesn't happen while I feel like I'm gonna perpetual status Masuma is gonna I mean, I don't have K's either. But the money so like, you know, I feel like I'm black people rich, but I feel like I could lose it. But I feel like I feel like I get it back. You know what I'm saying? And also, I could lose it because everybody around me needs money. Nothing's I'm good at is giving people money. BI like definite definitely -ticipant dying every single day fulling die suitors leave here on this play the Pittsburgh. And I soon disappointed a everytime again. But I think I'll make it back. That's that's the way apart. But part of it is because I have a tenure track job. So technically, I have a job for life. But actually don't think that's true. I think they go find some way to get rid of. So anyway, I white folks will take my money away from me somehow, and or the black people around me who need my money. I'm gonna give it all the way somebody will take it. But I feel like I feel. Like, I could make it all back, which is a silly way to live in the world. "I was taught by big boys who were taught by big boys who were taught by big boys at black girls would be okay. No matter what we did to them as Kasay explains. Ms book, the lessons he was told or an often a write once Layla wasn't the most stylish girl in north Jackson. But she was definitely the funniest person and Beulah buf- is house right now. He's describing a scene in heavy when he was a kid at a friend's house. A girl. He knows is in a room with three boys the doors close what they up and they're doing I asked Dougie whose ear was pressed against their door full, which they run in a train. A smirk like a newer running. A train was really I had no idea. How running a train worked physically verbally? Who were you? Then. Here. That's a scary question that I wanna evade. I mean, I'm often trying to think about why did I not like take part in lake train running gang rapes that a lot of my other friends dead. But I know I did I mean, I know one reason I didn't because I was afraid, but I don't think the fear of doing that kind of stuff necessarily made me like not harmful. That's why start that book with the way. Like these dues ran the train. Oh, my friend. And you know, I was complicit in that. I didn't stop it from happening. She asked me to help her. I said, no. So I'm just starting to understand now twenty years too late that there's so many different ways to be complicit in the abuse of real people. Right. And this is what black people always ask me. Why folks to do like see how Yala complicit when you're not actually calling us that kind of? But I think even from fifteen sixteen people saw me as like a good do. Meaning that I wasn't gonna try to lake you know, it wasn't gonna slap a girl. I wasn't ever going to try to make a move on a woman at all right? And that made people put their guards down with me. And I you know, I can say like never physically did anything to anybody anything because I was just afraid, but I wasn't afraid to be emotionally manipulative. You know, what I'm saying winning afraid to be like tell somebody something I knew wasn't true. Yeah. I mean, you know, you hear people referred himself as good as decent, you know, in in in in. Usually what qualifies is goodness in this decency. Is while I haven't done this day. I haven't done this thing. And you know for a long time I've like. I've used that as as some sort of fuel to like, oh, yet this I didn't do these things that makes me do right? But I didn't do these things because fear. Yep. You know, even when adult man thinking themselves as being good or being decent. It's just very it's hard. It's it's difficult. But it's very it's crucial to interrogate intent. Yeah. And thinking about that is is messy. Scary too insecure. Yeah. Even saying it, you know, saying some of that allow. But you know, if we really want to change how we wanna change this. Then those sorts of things that we need to talk about what each other right Ainhoa instead of just just fallen back on that like that good too. I don't know going back into that. Good. Do closet. Coming up more messy troops. We've talked about all types of like terrible invulnerable in difficult and explosive. But if he asked me to talk about money in actual numbers. I'm I'm still short with that. Because I believe that there's like a rudeness talking about it. Hey, this is death sex money producer, Katie Bishop. So in the first half of this episode. You heard some excerpts from key essay layman's, new book, heavy and Damon's. Also got a new memoir out. It's called what doesn't kill. You makes you blacker. We've added both of those books to a reading list all about modern masculinity that you all helped us build last summer at the time. We were working on an episode about what it's like to be a man right now confused about a place news very unclear set of expectations as far as how a man should behave..

"For her in that was sort of demonstration that may be it wouldn't get better. You know, like that that phrase has never really worked for me because I don't I don't think she would at least, you know, in who she is today in what she has said she wouldn't participate in that family unit. Have you had periods. Where when your mother is is honest with you about those strict lines for her where where at his felt actually too hard to have a close relationship with her to have her in your life. You know, if if the phone calls ever got to hard once I was living in New York. I would just not I would just not call her or or pretend I was busy. And and it really was it wasn't until my friends that I'd I'd meet up with after a phone call. And I'd be like my mother just said this or like, I'm really upset right now. Because this is what just happened and an oftentimes they would they would laugh, and and it was their laughter and their perspective on the absurdity or the inadvertent comedy of it. All it wasn't until I could. Witness this other perspective and experience how other people related to my relationship with my mother that it it actually helped me re-engage with her and find. Find more compassion or love for her. And there are times where if I'm going through something hard. I have actually said to my mother, I need you to be a human mother to your your son right now, and and try at least for a tiny period of time to relate to me in that way, and not not through any religious filter. I just need my my mother, and and she can do that for maybe two point five minutes. And and I will take them, you know, like like in my most recent break-up, I was like. You know, this is this is what I'm going through. And she was like, you know, you know, four and a half years is a long time. I can see how that could hurt. You know, take care of yourself. Go eat, something warm. You know, when your father left me, I had a hard time to an and that's enough. I guess that's what I can hold onto. And then, you know, after two point five minutes it turns into, but you're actually taking a step closer to God. And it's all for the best and misses all part of God's greater plan for you to become a Christian. And so, you know, I just I just I just add it I'll take that that two minutes. "Over. Coming up being diagnosed with an incurable STI and trying to date. I have a set of links and podcast. Excerpts that I give people. Here's your homework. This is Katie Bishop one of the producers here at debt sex and money, we've heard from a lot of you in the past week, especially in response to our recent episode about a listener named Andrea. She told us what she learned about sex growing up in her evangelical church and her experiences resonated with a lot of you. I also grew up with conservative Christian ideals of purity and abstinence before marriage, and to be honest. I wholeheartedly believed in it so much of the early programming is just getting over what your body wants don't wiggled or church. Don't kiss boys we're supposed to have sex until you're supposed to have a whole bunch of sex. When you get married is very very hard to flip that switch this listener asked that we not share his name. He also learned about sex and his evangelical church the messaging, essentially is it's on the women. Not attempt to it's on the women to say, no to you. And you. As a man it's weird to think that good girl say, no. And then you get married and you're like why she saying, yes. Hopefully, she saying, yes, you know, you wonder to women really like this or do they want to do this, which I think is has some dehumanizing effects on how you view women. Another listener we heard from named Nadia weeded until her late twenties to have sex because of what she was taught in her church growing up. She's still a practicing Christian today, but I rarely think about sex anymore. Regard to my relationship with God. Maybe some people would call it selective. Christianity. I don't know picking and choosing parts of the bible that should apply to you. But I'm not really sure that there's a biblical precedent for a single thirty year old woman with the healthy libido, and no marriage prospects. Thanks so much for all of your responses. Get in touch by Email at death sex money at WNYC dot org or reach out on social. And if you're not subscribed already get our weekly newsletter. Every week we include yours sponsors to our most recent episodes, good death, sex, money dot org slash newsletter to subscribe. This is death sex and money from WNYC. I man assail when I asked for your stories about living with S T is a lot of you talked about how they impact your dating life. A listener recalling Lauren used to love the adventure of online dating. I felt like every time. I went on a date from dating up. It was like looking into like a window of a life that I could try and about year two years ago found out that I had herpes genital herpes and found myself using herpes are STD's specific apps, and then I think about going on the regular apps, and then they would have to have a conversation with the other person. But I know that you can I just have a lot of fear around that. Conor Callahan knows that fear. He's twenty eight. And when he was diagnosed with herpes two years ago, his first instinct was also to turn to STI specific dating apps is kind of that nature clemmie join this site because he's the only other people in my life that I'll be able to connect with fear based it was like exactly everyone just recently diagnosed recent very fearful that they'll never never be loved again. Then they're flailing around in the internet dating world Connor got off the apps quickly and out into the real world where he's had to disclose his herpes diagnosis half a dozen times. He says he's getting better at having the talk with the women he dates, but it still doesn't always go. Well, I've had people leave the coffee shop of where I disclose to them. I've been like in bed like cuddling or something be like oh. And if we want to do something else, by the way, and. Had them while it was it was a really lame excuse. I can't remember what it was. But they left immediately. So that was it's was instill is it's difficult. But it is you'd have to change your mindset because you can't you can't change. The fact you can't get rid of the fact that you have it. Conor takes medication to control his outbreaks when they happen. But that wasn't an option for listener named Wendy back when she was diagnosed in the eighties. There was nothing then in there was really no internet. So for me to be able to run and go look up all this stuff. Like, we can now that was not possible. I was twenty three I had not ever been married or thinking about having babies or any of that? And I just thought along all that's gone. Now, Wendy did eventually get married, and she has three kids, but she's single again now, and she still dreads having to tell new partners. She has Herbie's xactly about a year ago, I met someone just really fell hard for. And so they're the little bells started going off in my head where I was like, hey, you're not to have the condo. And we were on the phone one night on you know, when you have those five our phone things were just telling everything, and and so we're in the middle. One of those conversations. And he tells me that he has it and without yelling will tell you that I dropped my phone and sat upright in bed screaming, and he was like are you okay? And Anna honestly at it never happened. Where the other person told me, I I love you loan start screaming. He was worried that I was so upset that it was a dealbreaker on my end. I'm doing like the end zone dance.

"Andrea quit her job not long after that. And she and her husband eventually moved out of Texas. They don't go to church anymore. Do you still think of yourself as a rule follower? Now. No, I don't. Has that felt on morning? I mean when you when you have had a moment of uncertainty, and where you previously had a place to go a list of rules. When you've when you needed when you've been in a moment where you felt like you needed guidance. How's it fell to not have that anymore? Yeah. It's been hard. Sometimes there are still times where. I find myself. Wanting to pray because I don't know what else to do. I just don't know what else to do. And then realizing, but I don't believe any of this anymore. You know, like, I don't believe that there's a God out there. That's gonna. Answer my prayers. I've gotta figure this out. But it's just my. Go-to instinct. Would you have sex now? Does it feel like? How you were taught about sex in how you were taught about goodness and badness with sex. Does that still feel like it's a part of your muscle memory? He had it's something. Still struggle with. And when you spend so much time and energy shutting that down. It's not like a switch that you just flip back on. It's not like, oh, we're married now, we can you know, how all the sex we want, and I can feel super awesome about it. And I'm not saying that I don't enjoy sex at all that. It's like oh full of shame every time I have sex. But there's always this piece that I'm having to overcome this little mental thing in the back of my mind that I have to overcome. And it's like, I just I wanna get to a point aware. That's not there anymore, and I'll be really honest. I don't at this point. I'm not sure what that would even look like or feel like or how I would get there. That's a listener named Andrea. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter. "Fine. I'm here. Anna sale who produced that peace and Anna you have an update on the story. Yeah. This episode. I heard about a year and a half ago, and I just talked to 'em out this week, and she is now officially retired from sex work. What does that mean retired? She's not doing it anymore. She figured out that she had enough money in savings to only do the work that she was doing it wasn't sex work part-time, and she's now back in school. She got a scholarship and realized she had enough money to take the leap. Permanently. Permanently out of sex work. I think so I think she she looks back on it as something that she's glad she was able to do when she was in a financial emergency. But she said talking to us helped her realize wasn't something that she felt good doing anymore. So once she had the money to stop doing it to try to do it when she told you that I'm retiring how did she sound hundred? She what was her demeanor. When she told you that it was really remarkable. Because what I remember about. This interview is how heavy she felt like she was in a place where she wanted to get out and didn't know how and talking to her now a year and a half later. She sounds happy and light. And like she was finally able to make a decision. That's time had come. Wow. Yeah. Who do we have to thank for this piece? But she said talking to us helped her realize wasn't something that she felt good doing anymore. So once she had the money to stop doing it. She's ready to do it. When she told you that I'm retiring, how did she sound? How did she what was her demeanor? When she told you that it was really remarkable. Because what I remember about. "We first started thinking about veterinarians and suicide back in 2016 when we heard from a veterinary social worker in canada she wrote to us i have such a deep regard for my veterinarian colleagues i just wish the rest of the world understood what they experience and how they struggle and last year veterinary ends and suicide came up again we are putting together our series about student loans one vet in georgia writing about her loans said there have certainly been times where suicide seemed very comforting it was soon after that that producer katie bishop heard about the series of suicides endow us so we went there to hear how this community was coping in the aftermath in to understand more about why this happened well we learned is there isn't a clearcut answer to why suicide is so prevalent in veterinary medicine the limited studies that have been done are focused on veterinarians not that tax but they backup what we heard on the ground in texas that high expectations from pet owners euthanasia debt and low salaries all could contribute to the increased risk of suicide researchers also point to personality traits commonly found in the veterinary profession something we also heard from dr julie duke attack in dallas the kind of academic achievement they have to attain often selects four individuals who are very very driven perfectionist can potentially more introverted and those traits have been associated with higher rates of depression and suicide in the us research is ongoing to document and better understand how the risk of suicide difference by occupation beyond selfreported surveys we partnered with the dallas morning news on this episode they visited the same emergency hospital he did and put together a photo essay in video about the stresses that veterinary workers face you can find a link to that on our website at death's sex money god work.
