"That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said about him. Yeah right but here's the thing what's his role in this team. If it stays what it has been. He's to me been the most important guy on their team since trade happened and he's been unbelievable until he got hurt and he's the glue and he's the guy that was saying. I don't care about taking the last shot. I don't care about now. Would that change in the playoffs. By all accounts it wasn't supposed to change in time for the plant. So if the life the lights get white-hot do you think durant is going to crumble under the white hot lights. I don't do the winner. Everywhere he goes. You know kyrie. I don't see him. I don't think those guys wilt now your point about chemistry and when the game gets tight and let's say joe harris misses a shot and see you know. We'll kyrie turn and do what he did in boston. And start jumping on the guy that might happen. But i think joe harris can take it and i think joe harris is going to make more shots. Bigshots that he's gonna miss most interesting thing to me about this nets team is that if they even didn't have kyri for a couple rounds i actually think they'd be okay. I was just a rant heart and all the other dudes have. I still think they would probably probably pick them to win. These kyri becomes as weird luxury where you don't know what you're getting from him from week to week game to game But if you get anything out of him. Now they're stoppable man which when you kind of like what he wants right. That's the spot when he plays. Oh my god you just you watch him when he's engaged and he's playing so good so good you forget how good he can be could dominate games for stretches that you just go. Nobody could stop him. Israeli town and just think about dinwiddie was here. You know although. I wonder if he was healthy. They would've traded and probably at the deadline rate hundred percent. Yeah i looking at the stats. I was just looking at some. Mvp stuff and i was looking at different stats bouncing around and looked at pr And if you look at the top ten in pr right now. It is all superstars. This will give you the top ten except for the fifth place guy. Yokich jaanus zion. Kawhi jimmy butler steph curry luka doncic dame lillard kyrie irving that's not an mpr lebrons not in their lebron's thirteenth. Wow i'm surprised. Lebron is in the top ten e always is. Can you guess who number five is. Yes the non superstar in that top ten. I'll give you a hint. He's playing less than twenty minutes a game and he plays for my favorite alan. Oh no i was gonna say jared allen your favorite team. Who's your favorite team the celtics. They're your favorite team. Pr oh robert. Williams time lord is number five or behind coed lettered at twenty six point three six minutes a game. I was really shocked to see him in there. Yeah let's not get carried away. I think that's why we've had like slade issues with pr because it right great. But there's always the robert williams type guy in the right and it's often a big guy. I mean from what i've been told by all the analytics guys they have stuff we can't possibly match. You know art layman like myself and others but they do say that the espn real plus minus is probably one that they. They put more weight on than they do pr for his fourth song. For what it's worth. And i don't have that in front of me but it's the same. It's you know it's usual. Cast of characters I think lebron fares well in that statistic as well so yeah well their field goal percentage matters and that kind of stuff either funny thing about lebron before he got hurt. It was statistically. I don't i think it was worst season just from the garage. Stats to six. I think the impact of it was probably low. Better I think that's all i had for you. Oh i wanna talk. Women's college really fast okay. the the stanford wins. Yeah one coach had at one for twenty nine years yeah. Isn't that beautiful that she had a chance not to win for twenty nine years. So what happened. Because i i. I'm just recently kind of becoming enamored with with this whole. How do you. How do you go. Twenty nine years between championships. I thought that was bizarre. Push a good school. It's not like she's like no. She's a lifer and they're always in the top five every year. It's never happened. Yeah just didn't happen after that and she got calls or is there like so. Here's one thing. I have to brag about because my old high school coach kathy delaney smith is the coach at harvard. As you know 'cause. I've mentioned her before but she was for many years. The answer to a great trivia question which was the only time a number sixteen seed beat a number one seat in the ncaa tournament because this is before belmont did what they did. Yes she beat. Tara vanderveer and stanford now. They had some injuries but she had alison feast. Who's now basketball. Ops for the celtics. So they were the answer to a trivia question for many many years. I love the who..

"The position. The ncaa has put women's basketball in this year. I'd like to tell you this is a new breaking news story tony. This is as old as the game of basketball itself. It's so disconcerting. I had an advocate kathy. lee smith. Why she she'll always be one of my favorite people in the world. I wish every young girl had someone in your corner. Like i did and guess what they don't. It's an incredible story. Jackie let me ask you this when you hear the ncaa say well. The fewer about this is going to be good for us. Because now we know. And we're gonna get our internal conversations right now. We know now we know how come you don't know already the story i told you was from the nineteen hundred seventy. It's twenty twenty one. Are you not paying attention. Ncaa come on now guys. Let's go and i mean guys not women guys emily kathleen video of the weight room. I saw posted by women's hockey players cover. I saw it posted by stars of the women's soccer team. I saw being posted by my twenty two year old sister. Who's a d. one field hockey player. There is a reason that this resonated with so many female athletes across so many levels. It's because this lesser than treatment is what they become accustomed to and they have been told throughout their careers to just accept it to be grateful for what they have and if they do speak out. Then you're greedy or your troublesome even if you do deserve more and is not just about the weight room. it's also the fact that there was no child care provided for mothers in the bubble. It's the fact that there was no photographers or transcriptions. Until the sweet sixteen it's all of these other inequities and the biggest game of this to me is the. Ncaa didn't think anything of it because they didn't expect women to speak up because that's what they're really glad this was the exception is route ears. There's four people on his panel today. Who probably felt like what it feels like to have. Other people think that you are lesser than and when you have little symbols like the just tell you exactly what they're thinking. There's my weight room. That's what they think of me whereas on the men's side obviously and so in terms of just how to fix that. As jackie said it's been so long however we not fixed it yet but it starts with these types of exposures and then it starts at the type of communication. You would think that on the women's side they would say. Hey what are you guys doing on the men's side okay. We're going to mirror that over here as best as we can so there are no inequities something as simple as that conversation. You would expect leaders to have all the time. Leaders are just failing us in this scenario and therefore they are still these sort of thoughts of inequity and clinton yates i'd like to address particularly the logical fallacy. That is the argument the. Ncaa is making behind. If you're just now finding out about it why are you seemingly so in control of every other thing. That every other athlete does that. You're striking down on them on. Because you don't like the fact that they actually have individualism. It cannot work both ways. This doesn't even make sense from an argument standpoint. Nevermind obviously foul. This is on a basic level between in terms of any galleon standpoint. Don't lie to us after you get caught. That's the biggest issue. I think for a lot of people do not insult my intelligence when we know full. Well what's going on because people like my colleagues here have been dealing with for their entire lives. Be smarter we are too. That's the point. All the exhaustion in the voices of dawn. Staley and muffin mcgraw and basketball hall of famer. Jackie macmullan before us. I mean it's not on women to defeat inequality here as you said. Jackie it's men here and for the ncaa to ask for. Well we'll get another chance here and look at the changes we can make. It's not just that it's it's you're out you're out if you don't it's not just do better it's do better or you're out and jackie i wanna ask one last question or you can go ahead please. I know you wanted to get back in rows your hand. No but i think what i would say is that maybe this will turn out to be a good thing. The difference between today and all the years ago. When i played there was no social media. You couldn't tako photograph. I mean you'd have to go to. Cvs and wait for days for it. Now it's instantaneous. Results people can see what we're talking about. And that's why. I'm so proud of people like sedona prints for bringing this everyone's attention. So maybe now the ncaa is on call for hearing forevermore and anytime anyone season an equity take a picture. Put it on twitter. Make a statement. And that's how you have to keep people honest in today's world news. Another part of this. Though right it's bad business to have this inequality. What are we see that. The number of bracket tournament challenges that we have an espn or more than double tv. Ratings are through the roof and all the women's sports during this pandemic and the ncaa's mission statement. It's not just to make money in the mission statement which they put on their tax form says an inclusive environment. That's.

"What truck stories, the home to some of the best features investigations, character portraits from across the SPN. I Mike Philbrick your host of the double truck stories. Podcast. Remember subscribe to double-check stories podcast on the ESPN app apple podcast, or wherever you listen to podcasts when Michael Jordan signed his first contract with the bulls, he had a unique clause that allowed him to play basketball anytime anyplace he wanted it was known as his love of the game flaws in his telling that story is it's hardly unique in a game whose history is filled with tales of sacrifice and triumph from some of the most notable personalities of the last two centuries. Today, we will highly these stories through an excerpt from a new book and film series basketball, a love story, an exhaustive effort that chronicles, this devotion, this love of the game stick around after the excerpt for my conversation with ESPN senior writer, Jackie MacMullan. As we talk about what the giants have basketball have taught us about its legacy. Now we present an excerpt from the book basketball love story by Jackie MacMullan Rafe Bothell MU, and Dan cores. Irvin Magic Johnson, three time NBA MVP. I fell in love with basketball watching games with my dad in the living room. I was three or four years old him cheering for the Philadelphia seventy. Sixers will Chamberlain was his favorite player. I would go out and practice Wiltz ugly finger roll and try to be the big Dipper and ever since that moment. I just had to have a ball in my hand. The brawn James four time NBA MVP when I was for five years old, I started playing on a crate. We cut the bottom out, nailed it to the light pole me and my friends, no backboard. So every shot had to go straight in or you didn't make it. And I remember that joy playing on the street cars interrupting our game, the ball, going into the woods, playing basketball. It did something to me. Kobe Bryant, two thousand eight NBA MVP I have a basketball family. My father played in the NBA my uncle plate in the NBA my grandma played. And so when I picked the ball up, I was instantly attracted almost like I was born to play. Kevin Durant, two thousand fourteen NBA MVP. My mom took me to our rec center. I walked into the gym and it was like the gates of heaven opened up. Cheryl Miller two-time, NCWA champion. I just knew there was something bigger and greater out there for me through basketball. It wasn't until nineteen seventy six. I remember seeing highlights of the women's Olympic team. And for the first time I with other female basketball players. Jerry West fourteen time NBA all star. I've always felt that the greatest thing a person can have is an imagination. When I picked that ball up. I was the referee, the timekeeper. If I missed three times in a row, I'd find a way to put a second back on the clock. When I was a little boy, I could use my imagination to be the hero of every game. Shaquille O'Neal two thousand NBA MVP. It was a movie called the fish that saved Pittsburgh. Dr. J. Julius Erving was in the movie, but I didn't know he was a real person. So my father said, come on and we jumped on the train to Madison Square Garden. I'm sitting there like that's the guy from the movie. Then he goes baseline, throws it down. The crowd goes crazy. I look at my dad. I said, that's what I want to be. When I grow up. Charles Barkley nineteen Ninety-three NBA MVP. I was able to make a great life at it, but they're really cool thing about basketball is it kept me out of jail. Adam silver NBA Commissioner. My was in second grade and I'll never forget. I shot the ball and it went in in terms of building character and confidence. The next time I ran up and down the court. I was a different guy. Rebecca Lobo nineteen ninety nine WNBA all-star. I'm in eighth grade and I'm already six foot two. You go to school dances and no boy is asking the six foot two girl with the big Perm haired slowdowns. But when I played basketball, I love being tall. Basketball was the place where I felt good about myself. Spencer Haywood nineteen seventy ABA MVP. We didn't get a basketball for Christmas because my mom could not afford it. So she decided I'm gonna make you boys a basketball, and we were like, how are you going to make a basketball? A basketball has got a bounce. So she made us a ball out of this Croker sack, and we were allowed to bounces in our head to make the pass or make the shot. That's when I started to enjoy basketball. Joining me now is senior writer, Jackie MacMullan, Jackie. Thank you for taking the time again. Oh, I always love talking with you, Mike. Thank you. So this book which I could talk about forever which I will not. I know you're busy, but there was my when I was going through this. I was getting ready to talk to you. My first thought was something that I want to ask you that I thought should have been in the book, but wasn't which is when did you phone with the game? Well, it's funny. I fell in love late. I was, I grew up in a neighborhood with mostly boys, and it was, you know, the sixties in Boston, and we just played hockey all day. We played street hockey all day long. So I don't think I picked up a basketball until I was about fourteen or fifteen, even and I was gonna try out for our high school team. I grew up in Westwood, Westwood, Massachusetts, and the teams were really, really good. There was a coach there. Her name was Kathy Delaney Smith, who's now the Harvard coach and the all time winningest Ivy league coach in history, male or female. She's passed Pete Carroll, and so have coach like that in high school you can imagine. So you know, I wasn't athlete. I was playing all the other sports playing field hockey, running track, doing all that. But I went to go try out for the basketball team and I looked in the door and I saw these kids shooting around and they just looked like. They knew what they were doing. And I knew that I didn't know what I was doing. So I turned around and said, you know what? I'll play next year and all of a sudden, you know, two years ago by now. I'm a junior and you can't play as junior. It's too late, but I was in her office one day 'cause I found her to be a really sort of intriguing figure. She was just someone that was talking about rights for women and girls, and I didn't know that many people back in the, you know, now you're talking to seventies. So I was kind of drawn to our and she started telling me that she had seen my younger sister play down at the junior high school. My sister sue who's a much better player than I was. And she said, well, at least I'll get one McMullan to play for me. And I said, well, I'll play. And then she looked at me just completely horrified. I know it's too late, never mind, and she said, you're telling me you wanted to play all this time. 'cause you know, I'm walking down the hall and five foot eleven for crying out loud, so so I think it took me a while to fall in love because I wasn't very good. You know, I was off. Awkward. I was left handed. I shot one handed. My Elba was way out. You know, I didn't have beautiful form, but I do remember the first time I took a shot basketball, which was well before I tried out for that team. And that's swish noise. It's just the greatest noise in the world when a ball swishes through the hoop like that. But then once I started playing, I didn't stop till I was almost fifty six years old. I kept playing right after college pretty pretty consistently and regularly. And you know it's you and your friends at our regular game for awhile, right? Yeah. We every Sunday morning bunch old ladies. Actually, some of them were young. Some of them were in their twenties and thirties, but most almost everybody was well. Everybody was at least a high school player in a lot of them were also ex college players, including my sister, sue who went on to play at Fairfield. So we had some great games and and then I started watching the game and really fell in love that. You know when I was growing up, I don't remember the Celtics being on TV. Now they may have been, but I don't think they were on very often, whereas the Bruins you know, if you if you, if you had UHF thirty eight, you were going to watch the Bruins every you know, I remember my dad used to let me stay up, you know, late on Sunday nights to watch the Bruins with Johnny Pearson and Fred cutic- and all those guys. So I was just a hardcore hockey girl. But boy, once I fell in love with basketball,
