Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Recap (Spoilers)
"Just want to put my cards on the table. Right at the front rise of Skywalker is not a great movie. Okay it is not even really a good movie. It's all right movie. Get what happens in less which left a lot of people who are fans a star Star. Wars really annoyed his. They decided to clean up the mess and cleaning up the mess leads to a really really jam packed movie. That doesn't have any room to breathe. It takes a lot of weeks that I don't know where the puck thing force. Helium Lean. How how did you see? She's deflecting line. Lean only Mason Nokia. Whatever anyway it takes leaves is trying to say and I think it's not a good movie however compared to the last Jedi it is like Shakespeare because the last Jedi for like five minutes here getting the this shit the way because this is what this is initiated us to talk about this in the first place? Wow you feel or personal. Do you feel like the last night is a good movie or do you feel like it's just the best of the three. I think I would qualify it as a good movie. Yeah I enjoyed it. I don't understand that. The side is objectively a bad movie. The choices it makes and the things that ask us to do with the characters that we've long loved it just but uh-huh Here's the thing I didn't feel like we need to really have a discussion about that. I feel like what we can agree on is the Disney. Didn't have a plan. They bought a four billion dollar franchise and and decided to make a trilogy which I guess they did that. Just because that's like the cool thing to do like they did trilogies. Let's do one now. But they didn't have a frigging plan. And like I know people have problems with the prequels but as I said so if you bought online at least the prequels had a plant it had a line of thought it had lower like the writing was terrible. Oh and I felt like the execution was pretty bad and somebody effects weren't great but at least I believe that the screenwriters and the producer and the director like had a vision of what they wanted to show us like growing up and then he kills the people killed his mom and then he becomes dark and we saw how that happened. I couldn't even tell you what the last three movies were about like. I guess they were about this girl named Ray who was the daughter. Granddaughter Powell Patine which how did that happen did he get busy. I don't know but like I just like why. Here's the thing. Why do I care about these people? At least I cared about Anna. Can I cared about luke doc I cared about layoffs on never gave a shit about ray fin and I never cared about any of these people. Why did they did they show them my TV? So my movie screen and I'm like why are you here. Why are you bothering me? So that's where I'm coming from. I here's the thing that the rise of Skywalker can be accused of anything and one of them is having a lot of fan service in it but considering that the last Jedi I had virtually no fan service in it I feel like the rise of Skywalker can be excused for like letting fans is literally get wet with themselves with everything. They've got nights of rain on my God. Oh my God lake For Stanley all my God like real Landau Landau like. It does so much that we wanted to see. We hope to see in like this entire trilogy. It was just like shoves them all into one movie. And there's no time to breathe and you're like how the hell do that happened. BALCON game bag. I guess I guess he's back like like he cloned himself just sorcery. Oh again like they did. They don't even explain it. They don't even get a hand. Wait to your and it's just like it happens deal with it and then so we can talk about the movie. Now go ahead. I know you agree with me. They showed about a pre compliant. Yes I completely agree that I mean I I definitely I I will agree with you. I thought the Prequel trilogy was the better trilogy. And it's not even close not even close so thank. God Oh my God okay okay literally. You're not totally malfunctioning. Okay well I also say that as somebody that probably enjoyed the prequel trilogy Morrison focused because I actually think. It's pretty underrated I think that I think George. Lucas is really good at world building and he has a lot of interesting ideas and I know this is a fairly common opinion but he just needs to be. I think edited a little bit helped along with some dialogue choices and so on But I would much prefer stilted dialogue weird performances and silly CGI then like a bland flat world that that doesn't really go anywhere and a story. That is not really a cohesive because that's what star wars to to me at least is it's fantastic and like yes. The new trilogy is much prettier and the performances are better and the dialogue is beer but lots of movies can do that. You know what I mean. The imagination being imaginative. That's would star wars was to me. It's it's really like was when I was a kid like opened my mind to like all of these new crazy worlds and aliens and fun fantasy like things and that's what I liked about it so personally for me. I enjoyed the prequel trilogy much more than and I personally will say well. They didn't know that was going to be Luke's Luke's father in the empire strikes back. They just thought of that along the way so it wasn't like they had a plan back then but they had lucas as somebody who has an over arching figure who was in charge of Star Wars. Here what do you have. Kathleen Kennedy. I guess who just doesn't care really. What way director takes again? I feel like the ends of the three is the best one we because when I saw the force awakens yes it is basically a reprise of new hope fine but like it helped me and I was like excited for where we could go. Oh my God like seriously this is serious. Part of Brent. I'M NOT CLASSIC J.J. Abrams is that he's he's good at starting things. Yes exactly and I'm like Oh my God like who smoke in like what's his backstory and the Knights of ran and how Kylo fall to the dark side. Who's this ray girl and she can do everything? I'm sure there are going to explain that. Not
The Rise of Skywalker trailer is out
"There was one big news item from today that he clipped everything else. News item. That was really the only takeaway that you should have had from today's events. And that was the release of the teaser trailer for the new Star Wars movie Star Wars Episode nine which apparently is going to be titled now, the rise of Skywalker, and that title in and of itself is a strong indication of the direction they're going with this film. And I'm encouraged I'm encouraged by what I saw it was very. Cautious going into watching this thing, and we should still be cautious. Because trailers only a trailer. We have no idea what this movie's extra end up being like once it comes out. But you know, just give you a little bit of context. In case. You're you're not a hard core Star Wars fan, which is probably likely for significant portion of this audience. There's a lot of controversy in the nerd universe. Right now, particularly when it comes to Star Wars, and that's because of the the last movie, which was called the last Jedi which detoured significantly from a lot of the established cannon and established rules of the narrative that had been laid down in previous films. And when I I watched the last yet I episode. I was actually okay with it. I actually liked it. My my first viewing when I walked out of the theater. But my opinion changed as I let it breathe a little bit. As the film aged on me, and I became less and less of a fan of it to where. Now, I'm more in the camp of folks who say this movie was a travesty and what informed that judgment for me was less the actual content of the movie itself. Then learning that, you know, my presumption had been that Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy was the president of Lucasfilm, and that they had this story group because they made this big deal when Disney acquired Lucasfilm, they made this huge deal out of how going forward, you know, they basically threw in the trash can all of the non film cannon that had been established books comics video games. What have you up to that point? And said we're starting fresh the only thing that exists in this fictional universe. Are the movies and one of the cartoon shows? And that's it. Everything else is fair game. We're starting fresh new books. New movies, new comics? And in order to keep it all together, we're going to have this editorial story group. This core group of people is going to keep their hand on the helm and steer. The sheep of this franchise going into the future and make sure that everything's interconnected and make sense and has common themes that the stories interweave with one another. And so that you can have this kind of joint experience sort of like, the marvel films, right? The marvel cinematic universe. And so presuming that that was the case I walked out of the last jet. I think in myself man, there's a lot of stuff in that movie that I did not expect. But hey, that's okay. Because presumably based upon the fact that they have a story group. It's all part of the plan. Right. Like, it's all building towards something. It's okay. That they didn't answer a lot of questions that have been raised by the force awakens. It's okay that they didn't explain who this person was who that person's heritage was or what the what the underlying political conflict. Even is why these people are even fighting in the first place, that's fine. Because it'll all be revealed later. It's all part of the plan. But of course, what we learned in the aftermath of the last Jedi. What was revealed much to the shock of many fans, including myself was that there was no plan. They they in fact had not been it wasn't as though Jj Abrams who directed the force awakens. Had handed a roadmap to Ryan Johnson who directed the last Jedi. And that Ryan Johnson built off that road map to create his movie important affect any idea any outline that Jj Abrams had and that the story group, which presumably is nothing apparently destroy group doesn't have any actual thority or oversight whatsoever. What's going on with this franchise? JJ handed his wanting to Ryan Johnson, Ron Johnson threw in the trash can and just did whatever he wanted with. No regard, and you can see this in interviews with him when he talks about his process, and he talks about writing he talks about why he made the choices. He made such as the choice to kill off the big villain the big looming shadowy villain in the background supreme leader. Snow? Just kill them off in the middle of the movie. When you listen to Ron Johnson talk about that. He says, well, you know, it was necessary for Kylo rinse character to come out from under the shadow of his master and become his own his own man, and to develop as a character is the right thing for my movie was the right thing for my story. Well, that's nice. But this isn't your story like this. It's your story in the sense that you're tasked with telling it, but you're coming into a well established narrative the and by the way, there's a movie coming after yours, right? That you have to be somewhat cognizant of being able to actually have a through line narrative that continues for one hall of the movie, and he just didn't care. He did whatever he wanted and worse than that worse than Ryan Johnson doing what he did Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm and the higher ups at Disney, let him do whatever he wanted. This is a stout. Like from a business perspective. Here's your thing. If you're not a Star Wars fan if you don't care about any of this stuff, and I'm talking about right now appreciate it from this angle. Appreciate it from as a business decision. Okay. You're the CEO of Disney. You're the president of Disney entertainment and marketing and Kathleen Kennedy runs one of your film studio divisions, Lucasfilm a hotly new acquired property that you paid. I forget how much they paid for it. But it was hundreds of millions of not billions of I'm sure it was billions of dollars that they paid for it. And you they put out that money with expectation that this is something that they're going to be able to milk forever, right? That there's going to be this, and they had plans from the time that Disney acquired this franchise. And these intellectual properties they started laying out their plans, if we're going to have a movie every year, we're going to have new theme park. We're gonna have tell live action television shows and cartoon shows and video games. And it's going to be this fantastic. New expansion of of merchandise, and storytelling that the fans are gonna love. And we're going to be milking in raking in the the dough for decades upon decades decades. So that was the plan. Well at the fantastic, right? Looks laudable goal from a business perspective. But then what they did was the equivalent of handing the keys to this Ferrari to a teenager and just saying have fun with no direction, no curfew, no guidelines as to whether or not he had a follow any sort of rules, or when when you should be back or where he's even going any knowledge of where he's going any terms on when he should be back. That's the equivalent of what they did with this multibillion dollar franchise that the that the it stood to lose billions of dollars on. So just as a corporate story is a corporate business story. It's extraordinarily fascinating that the m- the modern era of Star Wars under Disney has played out the way that it has. So there's your background. So then this trailers coming out for the ninth one and Disney has been very diplomatic. And protective of Ryan Johnson. And pretended as though everything's fine. Right because they're not going to acknowledge that they've screwed up. They're not gonna acknowledge that they've made mistakes. In the public sphere. But they know right. Like, it's van they're very well aware of the fact that the fan community is divided there. A lot of people who don't like the last Jedi and even more than not liking last Jedi. I they don't like how Disney has handled this property. They don't like the fact that there seems to be far less intention and care going into the making of these films, then has gone into the watching of them, which of course, is a recipe for disaster when you're dealing with genre. Fandom something is big Star Wars. And so going into the release of this teaser trailer today for the ninth and final Skywalker saga film. The expectations. Were you have got to blow people away you have to this has to be this teaser trailer needs to leave everybody wanting more. And if it doesn't then you might as well, just kissed the franchise goodbye. Those were the stakes. It had to be good. It had to be impactful people had it had to leave people excited that mission appears to have been accomplished. And watching this thing as a fan. You know, who's been a fan as long as I've been alive and been capable of comprehending. What I was seeing with Star Wars. It was really nice to see the kind of subtle reassurances that were laid out in this trailer that there was the way it was cut and the texts that they overlaid was Vakhitov of the first trailer for episode one the Phantom Menace that came out in nineteen ninety nine. I believe it was. So they're drawing that connection between. They're basically saying look we recognize this is the we're trying to connect the dots here between where things started. And where things are ending the inclusion of oyster over from Luke, the which was then very shocking reveal at the end of this thing that apparently the emperor the big bad from the first two trilogies is coming back in some way. Now, we don't know what form, but he's going to play a role in this film, which is completely unexpected. And more than makes up for the the loss of snow in the previous film. So now, I'm excited again. And I think a lot of people who were doubtful. About whether or not JJ was going to be able to land this thing Jj Abrams are excited once again about the potential of this movie coming out on Christmas. Now, we may be sitting here. Looking at New Year's twenty twenty and shaking our heads with our face, and our poems and saying well man, why do we let ourselves get excited again? But as of right now, I'm going to allow myself to have a little bit of optimism. So there's my there's my freestyle Friday completely apolitical pop culture commentary for you on Star

"So I was just alighted to say people alighted for you know, different. Not just like odds full only, but I had other people. I, you know, I tweeted out the announcement and some people like, you know, breast alles. Howard. Yes. Day flirty. Yes to Haiqa. Yes, like so it's like, I'm glad this announcement has. You know, might people's dies for so many different raisins. I don't know. It's funny because I remember when Kathleen Kennedy was asked about, you know, hiring female directors and stuff, and she kinda got some flack over that. And then I feel like what was it like a few weeks later? They announced that John Fabra was doing this live action show and. Again, every outraged that you know, a white man was high. You know, another white man was higher to two. A bit of salt to that wound was that it was announced on international woman's day. Oh, in that too? Yes. Forgot about that. Boy, looking in this, it seems like they were well aware of that. I mean, you have to women here. You have to people of color difficulty. I'm not sure what his background is. He feels in the the diversity for hat wears. Yeah. Okay. Let's talk take away t- have you seen any of his films like you seem like a comedy guy? So I would assume that you have seen at least his last two movies, right? I definitely saw Thole what else? What else does he made? He, he, I, I discovered him with this movie called eagle, shark, which was like this very quirky, Wes Anderson ask like New Zealand film, and I'm I'm happy because I discovered him. I'm going to break this is gonna be my Jason ward moment of the podcast. Fifteen years ago. I saw that film or whatever it was in my quote is on the cover of that Blu Ray and DVD. So I feel like I discovered ticket t- way before everybody else, but he made this a mockumentary that was his vampire monkey medi called what we do in the shadows DC that not. No, it's very good. And then he did this drama that appeared at that permit. Sundance was nominated for a bunch of awards called hunt for the wilder people. Well, one thing that I've seen a lot of was he looks like he's directed and appeared in a few flight of the conchords episode. That too. Yeah, yeah. And I like was that was fun that that was just a fun movie to watch. Yeah, that one's good. I the my favorite of all the people announced and I have no idea what these guys done except for these one credit, but I'm gonna pretend not the credits because it's Rick. Themm Uwe we Yama. Say it again. Fumi. Yama. Fumi alma? Yeah. Rick food Miana and I just liking brackets. He's credit is dark, but when I read it just sounds like who was writing the pressure lace was just really stoked as like, don't Rick because that's I talk like a seven year old skate kid. So that really relates to may. Did you see film dope? It sounds like you have. I know I have. I have it. So I because I watch lots of style walls and I try to watch anything set, you know. So I can assimilate with your coach. No, I that's another film I thought Sundance in loved in. Who was it? Kersee Clemens was in that and cheese, you know a rising star. She's supposed to be in the flash film. Yeah, anyways, getting off track here. I do. I have to say I, I do have a limit of two Sundance references podcast. So. And you'll just you'll be dead. Yeah. Yeah. No, it's. No, he's very good. And you like dope, you talk was Doug. No, I'm excited about him..

"Hello, everyone and welcome to slash on daily for timber. Twenty eighth two thousand eighteen on today's episode. We're gonna talk about the latest film and TV news is last shown editor chief Peter Saretta joining me to spike Aslan writers. Why turn buoy hey everyone in Chris Vangelis STA alot guys. It's it's Friday. And when will this week be over. That seems like a long one humor hours left. Yeah, there's all this, you know, stuff that's going on in politics and our own Jacob hall is out, you know, cover tastic Festus week. So we've been kind of in Abend traveling. So we've been, you know, short staffed and there's been, I feel more news this week than there was in the previous three weeks combined. Like literally I was putting together this podcast end. In the last thirty minutes, three stories broke, which completely changed our plan for this podcast. So you know, we should get to those stories, get to the big breaking stories. And let's start that off with Star Wars because he can't give any bigger than Star Wars. And the big news is that Kathleen Kennedy is returning as look as film president, Chris, would we know? Yes. So after solo Star Wars story didn't do that. Well, at the box office, there were rumors swirling all over the internet specifically on YouTube where literally anyone can report on anything. If they have a camera claiming that Kathleen Kennedy was out, I actually had someone at me on Twitter literally saying, I know for a fact, Kathleen Kennedy has already been fired, and you'll see, I swear to God. You have a same youtuber said that what dark Phoenix wasn't even going to be released. I think yes, the more of the story is people on YouTube are wrong, but so yeah. In light of all these rumors news just broke that Kathleen Kennedy has reappeared deal to be Lucas film president for at least three more years. So for three more years, Kathleen Kennedy will still be running all things Star Wars, and Indiana Jones and other Lucasfilm properties. I think you know, there's a lot of conspiracy theories out there that hated last June. I, you know that are you know, declaring, you know, the reason why solo bombed was because of them. You know, they think that, you know she hasn't handled this well, obviously, was usury shoots for not just solo but rogue one. But you know, I've liked the output so far and I'm I'm a fan of Kathleen Kennedy. What she's doing HT would you have save us? I'm so happy that this story broke and just through all the detractors wrong, I'm I'm not happy just for that sense, but it was a big factor. I think Kevin Kennedy is get her job and she shepherded so many great films over the years. And yes, Star Wars had had had some very public troubles, but I think that's because such big property and she still has a bigger success too. Failure ratio. So I'm happy that she signed on for more years at Lucasfilm, and I hope that now that she is set for the next three years, she will encourage more diversity behind the scenes and hopefully pick more female directors and crew for the films which she's often been criticized for. The the big problem here. And I know we've talked about this in the past is that you know she kind of tried to hire a bunch of upping common, some new talent to direct these Star Wars films, and that kind of, I think, bid her in the behind quite a bit. And you know, I, I wanna see her hire female Star Wars director, but it's hard to do that in less you're going for the, you know, the two female directors that you know have done, huge movies. So I do hope that she finds a balance of finding, you know, up and coming talents and pushes, you know the diversity in the way she has been, you know, without falling prey to, you know, the problems that Lucasfilm has been having in the past Chris. Are you happy about this news? I am..

"A good idea just because no matter like the tumults going on behind the scenes at the film i think kathleen kennedy is doing a really great job bringing like good quality star wars films to the to the big screen for sure i'm also honestly not sure disney would wanna lose feige at mar level did i mean like right that makes so much money for them not the star wars isn't but who'd want to be responsible for the idea of making that decision in possibly messing things up of but it let's move on to greta gerwig who you know directed one of my favorite films of last year i excited for anything she is going to do i wanna see any movie she's going to make away she's making little women hey don't hate on little woman peter i okay i've never read the book but i've seen i wanna say it probably seen three film at a patient's of little women in out maybe it's just not for me i maybe i'm not the target demographic for little women put it to meet before we you you tell us what we know it kind of disappoints me that not that she's doing a film adaptation of something that i don't care about that's fine because i want to see someone make me care about it it's i guess i'm just wanting to you know there's been like dozens of little women adaptations i wish she was doing something more original right yeah and it's there's been like a million there's even two little animated by the way which i find hilarious but greta gerwig is currently apparently being wooed by tristar pictures to direct little men after her new big splashy solo troll debut with lady bird which want her a bunch of accolades and is making her like one of the hottest new directors in hollywood and a lot of people were sort of helping or expecting gregory do another original film but i think little man is actually a good bet for her just because at its heart it's a coming of age film and it will also possibly reunite her with her lady berg stars socia ronin and timothy shallow may who are currently up circling the roles of first issue ronin joe march who is the protagonist the strong headed through feminist writer of the book and a shallow may would play laurie laurie who is a the he was played by christian bale in the ninety four version was kind of the childhood friend slash dream dream boat character of the series and there's really a list slate of actors who are on the other roles including meryl streep emma stone and a florence pew so it seems like the cast if if this were to happen and being placed would be credible incredible and the combination of that and got a gerwig at the helm makes it seem like a really exciting attestation not to mention the fact that this will reportedly be a retelling of the classic novel and not just a straight adaptation so they're begum was retail modern day can event dan and the based on the fact that it's a telling as they say and a lot of these actresses and actors are older than the characters are in the original novel i get the feeling that i might be a modern day remake of the louisa may alcott book okay i got to take this opportunity to ask you a question hd because i think almost every female i have known in my entire life has liked little women it's kind of like the phantom of the opera and little women are like that like i don't know why but it seems like every woman loves those two things so me on a little women why why why why should i be excited other than you know the people involved here so little woman was one of my favorite books as a kid i read it i think the first time in like fourth or fifth grade and it just really appeals to i think the reason it feels is so many women is that is just so specifically about that female experience even though it set in the civil war era and is basically a time period that we're not familiar with a lot of the struggles and pain and the grief of coming of age and i love it's all there and people really relate to that like despite being a period piece that feels like it would be stuffy it's actually really heartwarming and universal in the.

"Good with kathleen kennedy and you take her suggestions and you to get along that's great but kathleen kennedy told the directors of han solo no you go do this and they said no we won't go do that and so they were fired and kathleen kennedy and colin trevorrow had a bit of a row themselves with personality conflicts and from what i hear colin trevorrow is difficult to work with and kathleen kennedy was like no you're not gonna do this to me you're out you don't bleep with kathleen kennedy not demented and colin trevorrow may one of the worst films a two thousand seventeen book of henry yeesh so ryan johnson he was told that he could develop his own story he was brought along as a producer working alongside kathleen kennedy everything has to be vetted by the entire story group that's going to figure out how while the comics and the novels and the movies are all going to interplay together and what those stories want to tell all our but yeah i think that he had ideas the he brought to this i mean they go just pick and is like a lottery winner the interview directors and directors give their ideas about what they want to see and a movie and i think what ryan johnson said excited kathleen kennedy and that's why we got the movie yeah i would say that if you feel like there are controversial choices here these are things that disney feels they want to follow one not just ryan okay there's some weird alien porn we'll talk about that i'm shocked to them at disney villa but reportedly ryan is going to do a new trilogy after this reboot trilogy your new trilogies gonna do the next one so they must like his ideas that is certainly a vote of confidence for johnson the gave me good feelings coming into this if they like what he did hear so much that he's doing the next trilogy that's great that said i really wished they'd kept him on for nine instead of bringing back jha fultz we'll talk about that in two years i guess yeah well all see if i like that idea by the end of this film so i buy the plot.

"More unseasoned directors not being able to pull things off quite as smoothly as kathleen kennedy had hoped so i i you know i i've said on the pike as i heard that they're trying to hire more seasoned director's first star wars projects in the future and i'm thinking that uniform he's going to have to get his chops elsewhere before he gets his name on it store standalone movie and what better placed view that than in the tv rome which he has already proven himself in in what innovation so that's that's my thoughts on it yeah also in the news wall out promoting thor rag morocco we have found out that take what tiki popular movie what we do in the shadows which is a makki memory a vampire mock you memory is going to get a tv show for the united states cress what do we now right so taking we td said basically were trying to develop a you as urgent of what we do in the shadows uh he said you're in the states so especially all he said he doesn't really clarify that means it's going to be a complete reboot in the sense that carry the same characters but play by american actors or it's going to be a different set of american vampires in with the same format so john water details but that's basically what he said they're working on at the moment now when i first heard this i as i headline is like what we do in the shadows being remade for the usa and i was like why why would you do that because first of all you know it's such a good movie it's not like it's subtitled it's not like um you know it's not accessible for american audiences and then when i found out of the tv show made perfect sense to me because it seems like they could you know go they could make a whole season out of that movie like it almost when i was watching that movie i was almost thinking like why isn't this a tv show a this is almost like real world with empires the i mean like like i want to see the tv show version of this and this is what this is going to be what are you guys thank you have any thoughts on this.
