I really enjoyed understanding physics than how all had also design and build things produce functionality in the world and i was always drawn more towards like smart systems with sensors and actuators. Programming actually delayed taking programming class. Because i'd heard so difficult on the other athletes libel player. They all said oh. You know the programming class so hard. I loved it beyond words. And then i just i took more computer science punching i decided to stay for master's degree and i worked actually in as a teaching assistant a machine shop for two years helping students learn design and manufacturing like welding and casting bronze and milling aluminum and making parts sticking the shop late at night and i really fell in love with working with younger pupil helping them design and create things and i also took this amazing metrics class. Catherine Rampell is at the Washington Post. Kate Davidson is at the Wall Street Journal. Hey, you two Okay. Okay. So Katherine, let me start with you. Uh, and what I said in the open their expectations. Schmidt expectations, even though I probably said that wrong. Um, Here's the deal. There's no wrong way to say that may have word right fine. Um, 559,000 jobs is a lot of jobs. But a lot of the coverage this morning and through the day has been Oh, no, we missed. It's not as many as we thought. And I just want to push back on that for a minute, because let's be honest, This is a lot of jobs. It's a lot of jobs and look, the forecasts were all over the place. There's a lot of uncertainty right now. Some people were expecting a million jobs. Some people were expecting 300,000 jobs, right smack in the middle was this 670,000 number that gets cited as the consensus but consensus implies a lot more. Unanimity. Um then there actually was. So there was a lot of uncertainty here, right? I will say that it wasn't that long ago that economists were forecasting in the neighborhood. More economists. I should say we're forecasting the neighborhood of a million jobs. And like last month that was the best for last month, and expectations have been ratcheted down. And so in that sense, I guess it is a little disappointing, but look where we are clearly recovering. And it's going to take a while before we get back to where we were.

What Inflation and Retail Sales Are Telling Us About the Economic Recovery
"Katherine. Let me start with you And the headline number of the week obviously inflation it was big Part of that's because last year was so lousy But there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. And i'm curious as to as to your take on the whole thing. My general view is look. It could be the case that eventually. We'll get some some greater heating up the economy and maybe some scarier inflation. I guess. But i wouldn't freak out yet. It looks like based on the numbers that we've seen that prices are picking up not because there's too much money sloshing around not because of loose fiscal or monetary policy so much as a bunch of like weird idiosyncratic shocks and supply chain issues. Things that unlike that are unlikely on their own to lead to self sustaining inflation. Things that seem temporary transitory. So like used car prices skyrocketing because there's a chip shortage and so it's hard to get new cars and rental car agencies need to restock their fleets and stuff like that and you know gas prices. More recently. Getting pushed upward because of the pipeline. Shut down things that will eventually

I always say these in this may actually just changed in the past week but gilda with rita hayworth princess bride and usual suspects. It's funny. I killed i now. I wanna see give because those those other two are so gilded okay. Yeah clutching her heart. She collects your heart and is very. Yeah it's kind of the end of noir and the beginning of kind of that old. Hollywood glamour of the thirties and forties. And it's just. The film is just feels like velvet. It's an old gangster. Movie starring. rita hayworth is this gangster moll who runs the show but It's just a beautiful film if you to live somewhere else. We kind of talked about this book. Where the next you want to go. But where would you live. If you could live somewhere else. I would love to live in london. I just feel like it very meant has the same sort of energy and pace as new york city but with a history that we don't have here in the united states. If you could have dinner with three people dead or alive from you've never met debendra rule a little bit. Because i'd love to have elaine stritch at the dinner just because it's so many things i didn't get to talk to her about and say to her because i you know knowing her when i was fourteen fifteen now so much more about her life and ten years of of of being woman in the industry and just being a woman in general. There's so many things. I want to ask her and talk and discuss great stories like they're probably fourteen at the time i'm sure she censored herself somewhat around you now even a little bit. Oh no but she has for millennia. I'm sure i would love to have think the economist and the musical theater nerd in me with love to have alexander hamilton. At the table you know especially given the year that we're pro the the economy that we're probably about to entering we need somebody who you know. He's fixed it before he can help us fix it again. And i know what he thinks of. The musical die would love to know that person. I'd love to be Sidney lumet or sitting the man. I never know how to say his name. That's always one of those names. I'm afraid to bring up. Because i'm not totally confident and how to say. Yeah lumet's lou. May sidney lumet sidney lumet i think as well but i when i was prepping to shadow the director i read his book making movies and was unequivocally like reinspired as to why i love telling stories because from the moment you start that book you can tell that it's yes it's written by director but it's written by a storyteller first and foremost yeah something that i would love to do. Who's your who's your favorite muppet. Oh statler and waldorf. Oh yeah great commentary. Yeah yeah yeah. Speaking of the best. This'll be the best one Yeah love them and that they could get away with being such. It's so funny. I never thought they were mean you know. They said the meanest stuff but they were like there was something that i may because they were old and like the only cut to them every once in awhile. I never was turned off by them. Now this is an endearing sarcasm to them. And i loved it. Yeah if you had to be age for the rest of your life physically what you pick a hard question for me. Because i know i know i know i. I recently asked the thirty year old. Disney relied twenty eight twenty nine. I would like to feel like you know. The best is yet to come so at thirty thirty three. Maybe but also i don't know twenty three. I was training and had endless energy to work seventeen hours and train a budget. Well and i mean. I still kind of in the same way but i I would like have that level of energy. God if you could be if you could be reincarnated as as non human animal. I would probably say a house cat. Yeah just because i you know. They lay in the sun and they get to roam around and have adventures of their own and ida cap that played fetch as a kid and generally loved. Yeah rather be called unattractive run funny unattractive at this weird thing and i don't know if it's it's not really a weird thing but i i really don't like the idea of measuring self worth based on appearances and i think it's gotten to be such a habit in our society but there's so much more to a person than your appearance and and your quote unquote whatever that's perceived to be. I find humor to be quite admirable and it's something that i love doing comedy and ice fired that i'm in such awe of people who are comedians and are so funny all the time i i would so much rather be considered funny attractive. You know. it's funny. I sell you. You were on set. I saw some of the set. Herzog's thing and i was like. How does how does more. How set the cat and like how did they put slick that makes sense now. Yeah did you watch the golden girls when you were a kid. I've seen it. Yeah okay which who do you. Identify with dorothy blanche rosa sofia at so i. I really do think. I'm somewhere between dorothy and blanche because i am very pragmatic and can be very sarcastic but also like i love to have a good time dogs or cats. Say both okay. 'cause i i grew up with it's cats choice but i can't help but i i i love those. I just love animals beatles or the rolling stones. Because i just worked at abbey road studios. I think i have to say the beatles hard. That's a tough one talking about skittles the other day. Are you skittles person. I do like skittles. I i would say for us candy goes. I'm this is my favorite time of year because candy corn is. It's such a polar. But i love candy corn. No kidding yeah. I never got into candy corn for some reason i. I don't know why. I think a problem with the it wasn't wrapped at. I was always a bit of a german. Now you just scoop it up. Candy corn all right. I wonder what's going to happen this year. People are not going to go out. I don't know i. I'm trying to figure that out because i ll. Obviously i love dressing up for halloween and actually well. La but toronto's an amazing town for halloween time here..

"You and i had surpassed that height limit long ago. Thankfully they never replaced me in the show like mickey rudy pills or something like judy. Get growth suppressants or something. Holy knows told to do that anymore. So i had been auditioning for film and tv. Which i had never done in my life. Although i've been doing other things as well like i did i. I have a. I'd like to say a small obsession but it's not. It's a very large obsession with anything. That lin manuel miranda. Does i had done a done. A few readings and things of new shows as they were being developed musicals and things like this one of them was a new version of peter. Pan that was being developed by out flock. More and jeffery sellars and all those people that work with lynn. And i had such a great time working group wendy. I was the first wendy. And the son of the thing. And i did it. Yeah it was just like a reading. You know around about in the rehearsal spaces that they do. But i remember being so enamored. Because lynn came to the presentation and i was huge fan of his work and new kind of it was right he had just gone back to in the heights because it had just one it was about it was going to close and all these other things but he came up to me afterward and pulled me aside and said keep doing what you're doing kid 'cause you're doing you're in the right place. You're doing what you should be doing that. Little bit of encouragement from somebody. I respected so much. So yeah so getting to watch the a part of that and watch hamilton rise and all of those things but starting to work in film and tv in doing little projects here and there eventually got me to booking it disney channel pilot which took me to los angeles. It was the first time they tried to do. High school musical. The series. you've now. I can see beanie doing. I can see you doing that. that sell the mean girl and she was one of my my head minion best time. Talk to everyone fun. It's so funny because you that you're playing the part and that beanies playing that part because she's such a sweet she is such. I mean you know some sweet person must must have been fun for you guys to play last needles and so then went so now your your kid in your teenager in la. Did you do that a big job. you did. The mindless runner maze runner. Sorry just with dylan. O'brien really nice guy. Yeah you did a bunch of those right. The last two there were three pounds. And i remember the first one to just come out in. This edition came up for maze runner and literally. It was one of those you know where they keep the script so secret and they released. Maybe a quarter of a page of dialogue from. You know this is what they do when it's something that's like a hot property like i guess maze rent which maze runner was right. It was like a huge series. They keep it very soon. They don't want anybody to leak the script. So they yeah. Which makes it hard to audition. Because you don't know the context you don't know anything about the character. Exactly runner was such a weird one for me. Because i did the audition and when you have two lines and a quarter of a page go in and you do it seven ways and you go. I don't know what the yeah. I completely forgot about it. You can't beat yourself up only so many ways you can. You can do those three lines adr either. What they're looking for it or you're not you know it's either meant to be it isn't and that's kind of how it goes. It's fascinating that you had that mindset i. It took me years to get you know rejection and of dealing with it being like. Yeah i mean you know. There are those that hurt a lot more than others than those they get attached to. That don't work out. But i one of my first mentor's. She was an actress in kansas city. And she told me one day she goes. Look you're just starting out. You don't know a lot about this yet but just remember that an actress job and you walk in that room and for ten minutes. That's your performance and you give everything you have and do your absolute utmost thing that you love most in this world for those ten minutes for that audience in that room and then you leave it behind you forget about it you move on with your life and if it's meant to be yours if we'll be if it's not it's just such a healthy outlook i mean i i i i also think it really helps the acting because then you're able to just be present and not be in your head. You're very lucky. I don't think you i've just always focused on the joy of it. What we do for a living. Is we play even at work. Sometimes you even when. It's our seventeen. And i i don't know if you're familiar with like the. Cw shows do the big crossover of air. All the superhero shows. Yes and you're doing now. You're on a green arrow now. Got to be a part of the crossover last year. As the the the new green arrow following up stephen a mile there was a moment that we were on set and it was probably like our seventeen and there was some big dramatic explosion thing happening. But i looked around the set and i'm in a super suit. And then there's you know steven green arrow and you've about the flash in a couple of superman super girl about women and all of these amazing people and just kind of go..

Justin long sweet dude shampoo and with me as always is My guess closeted frog lover as well up until now in now. I feel bad for stepping on your story now. Okay well i want. I want solution for dawson's creek and it was for a role that i was really wrong for it was it was for like the cool jockey. Rebel comes into town like the new the new guy in town. Why did you say you were wrong. Well why would you think. I was brown hair. They're looking for more long blonde part of it part of it. I just didn't feel like that guide on was hard for me to be naturally that guy to put myself in that position and it was one of those auditions were. I'm reading with a castle. Who's not really. It's not like i have a scene partner. That's it's not like katie. Holmes is in the room it was the casting directors faulting the role of the hunky. Going next door. Well actually the guy who got. It isn't like a Classic i would say michael pitt. The actor michael pitt. If you remember him he's he's he's very he's handsome very handsome but he's but he's also but i'm saying he's not like a big hunk classical. I remember the ocoee. I remember that role. I i even remember the name of the character who is in henry. Oh yeah my rush because you re watch it. A couple of months ago he was genuinely played by michelle williams love interest and he was younger than her and that led to problems in the relationship because he wasn't mature enough right to handle the a quite precocious linley but he was she was. She was intrigued by him because he was kind of quiet and mysterious and he was. He was and sensitive. Well that's the thing. I required the audition. I remember required that i be cool and brooding all those things you just mentioned it and i didn't feel like any of those things and so rather than act the part I got very self conscious. And i and i tried to too hard to perform it and so i think about that audition. Only in the context of you know when like in audition. Some bad audition gets leaked it. Like i don't wanna say who's but we've seen that. Auditions are maybe not but they do. Sometimes and i always think Oh god i would be mortified if that one. That's the one i think about getting late. Because i i'm not being self deprecating like. I know it was bad it was embarrassingly bad. I bet you're trying to be cool. Like hey i knew about. Why are we talking about dawson's creek. That's a very good question. Well dawson's creek at. The time was on a network called the wb. If if you give kids remember that And then the wbz became the cw but they kept the general type of programming which is and the and the general type of fan base. Yeah yeah and generally speaking Actress much like the ones who were on dawson's creek were employed by this network including our guest today. The very talented very Cw lee attractive. Cw lee has that ever been an adverb. I doubt it can cat mcnamara cat. You don't think anyone's ever said that. Cw early may. I'm sure someone is headed by accident. Yeah sure for katherine right yes katherine mcnamara Should i call her now. I mean we get into that first caller different things but professionally known as katherine mcnamara. But you know now. I consider her a friend right so to me. She's now cat mcnamara so sorry but to some of you. She may be different nicknames but to the majority view. She's probably catherine so you're about to hear. She's not an extremely popular show. That has a rabid fan base. I think it's fair to say Called well they're not necessarily rabid not. They don't have rabies. No but they're they're a big fan base. I imagine there some of them are rabid all right. It's called You have a bad association with rabid do yeah rabbit rabbit a rabid dog who else rabid fans of rabid fans being really like aggressive in your face. I don't. I don't know how i'm wrong. Maybe rabbit is more pejorative than i'm thinking. Well i think it should. I be saying avid and see but that sounds avid fan base. And i think you're probably right to say it. It's descriptive enough and i record. I just mean that. The fabs into the show i mean. They have rabies though some of them. Do you think i'm sure some fans of shadow hunt. Rabies is very rare. I don't think you have it for a length of time. I've maybe some fans of shit undergrad rabies. Anyway she's on as you mentioned shadow hundreds of very popular show. But that's actually on another network. Yeah that's on free form and or was on free form for a couple of years and that has a huge following. But she was he w adjacent but most recently she was on the cw show green arrow. Aero yes i almost said lantern. You know what's funny getting potentially new listeners like huge cat mcnamara fans tuning into this. If you can't call her her all right katherine mcnamara huge katherine mcnamara fans who are tuning in to justify because she's the guest to middle aged guys only heard two guys tiger on dawson's creek. They've definitely are not going to there or they're fast forwarding their their kid their money. They know more than we do how to do it. So if you've gotten to this point also in house writer hit movies. She's of she's a wonderful theatre actress. I saw her. We did the twenty four hour place together. We talk about that. And she's very active in the twenty four hours. she's plays she's Does a lot of charities. She's really good person and she Recently is well is going to be very soon in the stand. The adaptation of stephen king. I'm excited for me to. I can't wait so hopefully you can't wait for Chat with very lovely very bright. Catherine cat i call her catch you can i guess mcnamara. And then we just got loads so sweet and I couldn't believe as only one night stand ever had in my life I was. Bring it back to shame I was like, oh my gosh well Avidan but then he was such a gentleman he didn't play any of these talks me the next day. Then he came straight to England the following week we just started dating and it was the easiest most straightforward thing in the world. There was just no reason not to, and then we got married I think six months after that. When we get married. So that was January we got married in September. Plus Jewelry. Ninety nine months. Yeah. Yeah so it was just very. And that's what I wish. I had known when I was younger is they they say that the right relationship is easy I didn't realize it was that easy. There are no signs of resistance in the right relationship it's not Oh, I'd have to quit my job and to do this and all well, I'm you know there's a flood in my basement and I got For the right relationship there are no excuses in you just make it work. We were fortunate that he didn't have children are. Current wife or anything at home and it was easy. I'm in a position where. We could be together, but it was just so easy it still so easy. We don't fall out. He's just like perfect. The reason we never told about that because it wouldn't make very good sums of films. I know people having a really nice time in sweatsuits. You know what I mean no one wants to see how Film we want to see people running in the rain we want drama sometimes, we want some blood. and. So I, think that in the name of art, we've destroyed everyone's perception of what love is like. There was that film. What was it? He's not he's just not that into you, which is such a mind blowing moment at the beginning of the film where from the minute in particular little girls. Fast received some sort of bullying behavior from a little boy. We are always conditioned to think that that means we're was explicitly told that means he likes you. "Away from my bodily makeup this year you started your own podcast from your house. You don't really really have guests other than sort of Conversations with family members that you asked for their permission after you spoken to them to Adam. You kicked off this new podcast talking about something incredibly dramatic. That happened to you this year, which was a miscarriage. and. While it feels very recent I mean it is literally very recent I. I would love to talk to you about it because I feel like the way you opened up a has helped so many people not to people. I know. But I've just seen the Internet just the wave of support you but. Thanking you because nobody talks about miscarriages publicly. Another thing. Same. It says if we filed. It is I think that people attach it to this. Deep failure and my advice would be don't help people because when you do the day, right you emails about it every day. So I've opened up this Pandora's box of grief and every day. Now that I open my email, there are fifty stories about women who've had pregnancy losses and it's quite emotionally taxing. You're like I just know every time. I Open my computer at Grief Grief Grief. Can then grief and grief grief the grave. And then there's the low pallet cleanser. Ones Ball's. Men and women I don't want to generalize. But? Yeah. So it was traumatic at the time and now I feel a lot better. So if that's any consolation. It can be something that if you deal with it properly, it is a distant memory hopefully, and I think the mind is very interesting in how it heals you. It's sort of the same as you forget childbirth. That, you almost forget. Know I'm sure forgot your car accident people say they get an accident they forget. So is the same think what was most traumatic about the carriage is I always knew about miscarriage I found myself I always thought it was very well versed in women's issues but I didn't realize that..

'cause there's a movie with her and Rosario Dawson that oh I can't remember the name of where she scary the one where she scary and she jerks off to Rosario Dawson's facebook page and that is exactly what this caller does. Oh Oh my God I have to see it. I watched really fun obsessed for the first time it's exactly it's that movie but with Rosario Dawson Patron Laigle's. We can revisit it's in marriages supposed to compromise things on some things at what point is it. Like, no, I'm doing. May not be the thing. I'm not saying it is. But what point is it like one one party in relationships? Like now, I'm not really asking you politely bringing this up. So you feel part of it. But like, I'm doing this.
