Northrop Grumman named its new cargo craft the SS Katherine Johnson, following the company's tradition of naming new spacecraft after influential figures in the history of space flight. In a news release, Northrop Grumman said Johnson's work quote quite literally launched Americans into space, and her legacy continues to inspire young black women every day, unquote Yes, I hired Johnson in the 19 fifties at the dawn of the space age. Her work was to act as a human computer, and that work was underappreciated and underpaid. At the time. I just think that's really cool to see because i think that when we invest in our children and our children's fee from their parents that wow they really care you know and they believe in my abilities. Boy does it. Spur them on. So you know. This is a very positive. You know. positive home environment that she had wear. She was able to get the support that she needed. And that is really what helped her to go on. You know when she says later she would be the only woman and the only black person in the room and you know without having that since of who she was and you know that her family kind of had his deep care for her and not only was she was doing for herself and her family but for the others as well. I think that's something that really probably made her really. Wanna have that push and to did not give up so she's certainly did that Stumbled across his book on amazon. "Pass studies on zinc have gone both ways and it's never a good idea to change your behavior based on the findings of just one study on the other hand. These findings are from a randomized double blind placebo controlled trial. That's the gold standard in science. So there's a reason to believe that this information is better than what most other studies have turned up but whatever you do avoid zinc nasal sprays they can cause you to permanently. Lose your sense of smell no good in the end the best way to get over a cold is what you've always heard. Get plenty of rest. Drink lots of fluids and follow your doctor's orders get well soon. So let's recap what we learned today. Well Catherine Johnson was a pioneering mathematician for NASA. Help US get to space. And she passed away at the age of one hundred and one she left. Such a legacy. It's pretty amazing. Seeing all of the dedications that are coming out on on twitter and elsewhere. It's pretty cool. It's a pretty good run. Yeah and we learned that scientists have made the world's first living robots out of frog stem cells and they do things like Kerry stuff and pair up and move around in different directions. The future is here and I learned that the jury's out on whether zinc actually helps you recover from your cold better whatever you do avoid zinc nasal sprays. No good see. When I got sick I just feel like I've just got to sit around and drink a lot of water. Yeah I never take cold medicine all I know is. I'm thankful very thankful that I never had to deal with a sore throat this winter. Because that's the worst. It's not like the no eight is the literal worst. There's so many other things like you could have nothing I deal with. You never get like chest congestion. I don't mind a heavy cough. It's the sore throat. That's what gets me. Wow Yeah I don't know a heavy cough means I can't exercise. And that's there's there's a rule of thumb for you if it's below the neck take a rest day see and when I have a sore throat. "You'll learn about the legacy of the trail-blazing NASA mathematician Catherine. Then you learn about how scientists recently built the world's first living robots and why zinc probably isn't as good for colds. What's curiosity yesterday? The world mourned the passing of Katherine Johnson. The trailblazing NASA mathematician. Who helped us go to space? You may know her as one of the real life. Women who inspired the twenty-six Teen Film Hidden Figures? She lived to be one hundred and one years old but her legacy of excellence. That broke down. Racial and social barriers will be felt for years to come so today. We're going to celebrate her life by sharing some of her extraordinary achievements. I think about what it would take to become a mathematician in NASA space program. Now consider what it would take to become a mathematician in NASA space program as a woman in the nineteen fifties. Then consider what it would take to become a mathematician in NASA space program as an African American woman in the nineteen fifties. That was just the beginning Kathryn. Johnson's career Katherine Johnson was born in West Virginia and her father knew there was something very special about her. That's why even though he was a farmer he moved his family. One hundred and twenty miles away from his work so katherine could get a good education. She graduated high school when she was fourteen years old and she graduated from West Virginia State College with highest honors at Eighteen. Then after spending some time as a teacher. She applied to NASA's Langley Research Center which was looking for black computers. That was the term for women who performed mathematical calculations by hand since electronic. Computers didn't yet exist. She was hired in nineteen fifty three and quickly proved to NASA. That was a wise decision. Her first achievement was calculating the trajectory for Alan Shepard the first American in space in nineteen sixty one again. She did that by hand. Even when electronic computers began to take over people's still went to Johnson to double check the most important calculations. Famously one of those people was John Glenn for the mission that made him the first American to orbit the earth in hidden figures. Glenn utters the now famous line. Get the girl to check the numbers in reality. That request happened weeks. Before the mission and took Johnson several days to calculate but it still shows how much NASA trusted Jonson's brilliance. She worked at NASA until nineteen eighty six and her contributions were integral to the success of the Apollo Moon landing program and the beginnings of the Space Shuttle Program. Johnson was awarded the Presidential Medal of freedom in two thousand fifteen as NASA administrator. James Bryden Stein said in a statement yesterday quote she was an American hero and her pioneering legacy will never be forgotten unquote. I couldn't have said it better myself. Researchers from the University of Vermont have created living robots they're called Zeno bots and they're the first completely artificial living organisms ever made. Just give you a second digest that it's a lot. So here's the idea behind these new living machines. Artificial materials like steel and plastic have a lot of benefits. They can be strong or flexible and they last a long time but they break. It's hard to fix them and as they degrade the pollute the environment. Living Tissues on the other hand aren't all that strong but they do have the ability to heal and when they eventually die. Their byproducts are usually harmless. So what if you could make a programmable self healing robots out of living tissues? That's what the researchers set out to do and the created their own version of evolution to do IT I. They collected their raw materials in this case stem cells from frog embryos. They turned some into heart cells which move and skin cells which provide structure. They used information about how that combination of cells behaves to create a bunch of robot designs for various tasks like say moving in one direction..

"US finally reach for the stars. Let's talk about Katherine Johnson. Catherine was born in nineteen eighteen in the small town of White Sulphur Springs West Virginia. It was apparent from a very early age aged. Catherine was special. She was brilliant when it came to the humanities and she had a true gift for numbers by each ten. Catherine had started high school school in one thousand nine hundred eighty seven when she was just nineteen. Catherine graduated with highest honors from the historically Black West Virginia State College after graduating Catherine took a teaching job in Virginia which is two years later. She was handpicked for spot as one of the first three black students at the state's beats flagship school. West Virginia University Catherine enrolled in graduate school there for math but left after a year to get married and start a family family eventually should return to teaching then in nineteen fifty to one of Catherine's relatives told her about an exciting new opportunity the all black West area computing section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics was hiring for the Langley Laboratory. The West West Area Computing Unit was a group of African American women who worked on complex manual math computations for the programs engineers it was tough and vital oh work the west computers as the women were known analyzed test data and performed math computations early space program they were key success when Catherine started working at an aca she was quickly noticed for her sharp mind and the quality of her work. Catherine Katherine still had to use separate bathrooms dining facilities from her colleagues because NACE was segregated until nineteen fifty eight when it was incorporated into the new NASA where segregation was banned there. She worked for the Space Task Group which was charged with figuring out space travel in nineteen sixty. St Catharine Co authored a paper with one of the groups engineers about calculations forgetting a spacecraft into orbit. It was the first time a woman in her group received seved authorship credit on a research report and it was just the first twenty six published papers. Catherine authored in nineteen sixty one Catherine Atherton began working on NASA's hyper ambitious Mercury program NASA was looking to catch up with the Russians and put the first man. US Crafts Into Space Katherine did the trajectory analysis for Alan Shepard's May nineteen sixty one mission freedom seven America's first human spaceflight guy the CBS TV news project Mercury Headquarters on alcohol. If somebody and I'm Alan Shepherd astronaut the minutes to walk the next year in one thousand nine hundred eighty two Catherine was called upon to do the work that she would become the best known for as NASA prepared for John Glenn's orbital mission of the Earth it had to construct a worldwide communications network linking various tracking stations located around the world to supercomputers located in DC Cape Canaveral and Bermuda though the computers I have been programmed with the necessary equations for the entire mission. The astronauts were concerned about the new technology which was prone to error and didn't trust the computers is to do the calculations. Glenn famously asked the engineers to change the preflight checklist to get the girl get the girl to check the numbers but when he got ready to go call her to run the exact same equations that had been programmed into the computers by hand Glenn. Supposedly said she says good. I'm ready to go and she says Computers Right. I'll take if she says they're good then. I'm ready to go three to one zero ignition liftoff history. Perhaps being ridden at this moment here at Cape Canaveral face like take parental John around the world in ninety minutes. Catherine continued her career at NASA ASA until she retired in nineteen eighty six after thirty three years at Langley about her time at NASA Katherine said. I loved going to work every single day. In Twenty fifteen at the age of ninety seven Catherine added yet another achievement to her long list of accomplishments President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom America's highest civilian her thirty three years at NASA Catherine was a pioneer broke the barriers of race and gender showing generations of young people that everyone can excel in math and science and reach for the Stars in in twenty sixteen NASA named a research facility in her honor and later that year a book was released about her life and the lives of her colleagues it was turned into into an Oscar nominated movie called hidden figures. Catherine's incredible life continues to move motivate future stem. Ns today you'll lose. Who's your then you stop learning tune in tomorrow for the story of another stellar

"Bradley ripple. It's about young Harper who's kind of a wannabe detective and he's on the trail of some, I guess, would be or want to be kind of criminals. The kind of stick about this film is Harper can't talk, but he can play a her Monica and one would argue that he certainly can talk with that. Her Monica pretty fun flick here. It's also starting Eddie young. We've got roadkill making appearance as the priest and the dog wedding, Katherine Johnson, and they're at least Bradford good stuff. What did you guys think. Lot of chuckles lot of grey eighty slapstick in this movie. The gimmick, of course, is that. Our detective hero can only speak with a harmonica. Now, let me just say, I thought it was going to get really sick of the harmonica. Not I, you know what? I'm a harmonica fan, even grabbed the album. Let argue that the trailer was weirdly exhausted. The trailer is kind of really cover this film, and we always try to watch the trailers before we review a movie. And so we were all worried about this one going in because it looked like a lot of harmonica, but the way the film has actually cut, it's pretty well used, I feel absolutely. You can really understand. Music can express a lot of emotions and our harmonica can easily express a lot of those emotions just with a few simple notes because there's so much emotion and breath in every single note. I I couldn't stop cracking up when Harper was chasing down that the thieving none from the bakery opening scene. You guys aren't really missing anything with the spoiler but chasing her down. And he just has the harmonica jam knit his mouth and it's making like that in and out. Breathing sound. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Oh my God. I was crying laughing. Yeah, it is intentionally funny. I guess we should say. And it's a, it is a comedy, but you know, it helps is Bradley ripple is quite charismatic. Were you know, I, I've never seen him in stuff since and he was so good in this. I was really confused where his career kind of win. Well, that's the thing you may not have seen him, but you've definitely heard him. He's actually part of a pretty famous like pop group. Now, her boy. Have you ever heard of heard boy? He's part of her boy? Yeah, you mostly hear him. Backtracking on the back end of her boy tracks laying down some base, some harmonica bass laying down some harmonica riffs, but that's really his passion and another thing that kind of spoiled his. Another thing that kind of his career was he did onset choke on a harmonica, and ironically lost his voice. He sued the production company for a lot of money. So I don't. I don't even think he really needs to go act in movies, knows the music is all passion project, and you know, the thing is now it is..
