"Amy Thank you so much for your support and to everybody that bacteria kickstarter at the end of last year which enabled us to carry on all year long and produced the tennis podcast four. You hope you're enjoying it. We certainly are catherine say. Hello Catherine David. Hello Matt. You're right. Hello yes fine. Thank you good. We have had the most wonderful weekend watching old tennis matches from Rome which we are going to really have with you today from nine hundred ninety two. The story of Gabriella Sabatini is extraordinary. Run in Rome for titles in five years and also talk about how more generally she's one of those players that tends to get forgotten. I'm afraid to say including bias. I can't think of many times that we've mentioned the name Gabriella Sabatini over the last eight years of the tennis podcast. And we're going to put that right today. She also turned fifty as well over the weekend. So feels like a good time to do that. And we're going to go back to the two thousand six men's final between Roger Federer and Rafael. The Dow a dare say many more of you will remember that one and maybe some of you watched it with us over the weekend so lots to talk about before we do that. Let's just mention the news of the week. Which is that more? Tennis TOURNAMENTS HAVE BEEN CANCELLED UP until July thirty first on the ATP circuit and the events. The wheelchair events have been announced on the men's side tournaments like a start Baastad Kitzbuehl in Newport or cancel because of the corona virus. And we await to find out what will happen with the American swing in August. But I mean it doesn't sound great so we'll have to wait and see several WTI events until mid-july cancelled as well but no great surprise. I'm afraid Catherine I should say as well following on from songs that could be used for the corona era a particular mention for EJ Stanton on instagram. Who suggests don't stand so close to me from the police. Yep Yep acceptable. Yep that's yeah. I've heard that mentioned a lot of the lowest we were going for more. I don't want to diminish EJ's contribution that we were going. Ooh For more specifically songs that reference the absence of crowd right so rather than sort of general corona virus social distancing song bags which which I feel are. Is anyone else a bit over sort of Korean social distancing song just over the whole thing generally? It's a very very difficult time for cynical people with a dry sense of humor because there's a loss of well intentioned sort of sickly happiness in sort of we're all in this together in we'll come through this and have you considered crafting. You should be crofting. Oh we're GONNA come out of. This is best move well rounded people and you know people that then you bunny the. I'm so over all of that. This folks is Katharine Whitaker. Who has just shown irs her two thousand piece Jigsaw which makes two in a row that she's not together now and she's also about her fiftieth podcast to the air with two weeks worth of dailies to come during Roland Garros Peppy Catherine. Yeah but I'm not. I'm not smugly telling people if you considered podcasting it's it'll make you a better human being during these challenging times. Stephanie my better I have. You always Dunk Jigsaw. No I mean I have on occasion in over the years done the odds Dixon L- but nights definitely I. I'm not doing this to to self improve. I'm enough to pass the time. I'm just impressed. Because not cool or anything they might even be able to hear me through the wolves but my parents started kick those and they're really not very good at them. How can you be? How can you be bad at jiggles? Unless you've got bad eyesight you've done you've done about five of them in the space have been out of the night soaking souls. We're talking two thousand pieces. My parents struggling with five five hundred faces. Maybe they need help just handed over to my kids. If I was doing a jigsaw. There's no why upbeat during it because I just lose know these inch. It's IT'S GONNA sound like one of these awful peppy. People is the IT. It's it's very mindful. It gets me off my phone hawks. Group it it's very it's you can still sort of be watching the telly obviously not physique. And have something on the tally in the background. And be paying attention to it but it gets you off your phone sort of it. Concentrates the mind. Oh God I hate myself move on. Can Multitask is what you're saying? Awesome specifically cannot multitask. So I would say it's a nonstarter. Meanwhile folks we have been putting photos on social media channels of ourselves in one thousand nine hundred ninety two where possible because Matt didn't exist nine hundred ninety two and two thousand and six respectively Matt has created quashed a picture of a tennis magazine on which he as a child prodigy is on the front cover wielding his racket. Like Richard Gasquet aged nine. Except there's no strings in the racquet That's the away so walk away. A few people were taken in by it. It's my absolute probably favorite thing. That's ever happened to me. That people actually think I was on the cover of Tennis magazine. Age Ten it was just at Wimbledon in the. Lta Tent way you could go up and have your have your photo taken in front of a green screen. And they were then imprinted onto ace tennis magazine. And yes they put up there alongside the words the not a the future Wimbledon champion going to all future Wimbledon. Men's having experienced his game. I can tell you what could have happened to a young Merrin Chile church in appearance. Yeah not sure what to say about that. Well he he opened so I'd go with that. Yeah no great. I'm in favor of all. Comparisons to professionals plays a singular. Us Open title is not all Wimbledon. Titles there is it still in underachievement relative. I don't think we're actually doing any matches from two thousand seven for tennis relived. Who knows how long ten is live? We'll be going on. We may have to come to two thousand and seven at some point but I actually went back the following year and appeared on the front cover again. Let's just put it up as a sort of extra what the people working uniform and that one. I took two full days to find a photo from nine hundred ninety two that I deem acceptable and even that one had me wearing a world wrestling federation tisches. I One David submitted to me was taken at a distance of about twenty five meters and it was unclear whether it was actually David in the face with so blurry so ashamed of myself from that period of my life finding pictures some quite deep profound messages on about your life back then it was. It was an interesting about sending you into the garage to three more face. As at that periods you might never emerge from nat cold of shame. I love how you just sort of wearing the nineties in that in that fight. Chicago to fit the dictionary under nineteen. David what can you do? Yeah what can I say My memories of that period tennis wise Rod happier than of my own life more generally. So let's go back show showy and relive Rome from nineteen ninety two a year in which the Barcelona Olympics took place. Bill Clinton was elected president of the United States of America. Vinyl records were withdrawn from shops. Because of the rise of compact discs and audio cassettes and carry an A-plus Cover Heather Watson and Jack sock would bowl. I mean. That's a broad rundown of things that took place in one thousand nine two but in Rome. Which is the tone. We're leaving because that would have been fine a weekend. Just gone. I found it so interesting to look at the role of honor of that's ornaments which has always been such a good form guide for the four Roland Garros. It's the tournament that people tend to view as the most relevant because the clays similar the the conditions feel quite similar certainly compared to at that time when Hamburg was going on and that was often cold and heavy Andrei Medvedev always used to win it because he could just sit through it and more recently. That's been replaced by. Madrid which is played at altitude and has got slightly weird atmosphere inside the Cuyamaca and and as a result of all that Rome was always the one wasn't it and I think in many of the years you can see a correlation between the two and yet here we are watching over the weekend. Gabriella Sabatini taken on Monica sellers in the final peak seller shooed. Who had already won? What did she won that year? Matt relevant the grandson was should won four of the last five slams and she was in the middle of a run of reaching thirty three finals out of thirty four tournaments that she played from one thousand Hundred Ninety. One thousand nine hundred ninety three she. She was the clear number one in the world. And yeah she just wasn't really losing many matches at all and yet Sabatini had won three of the last four titles. She'd beaten sell us in the final year before. I also watch some highlights of that earlier in the day of the weekend and I mean and they were very very similar matches both matches. She won in straight sets and both sets of the match we soar. She came from behind. But you tell me Catherine I couldn't take my eyes off Sabatini's tenants maybe it was partially because we knew we were covering her as our point of of interest in in this particular show. But you just sort of drawn sir I mean you were. You were probably too young to remember her tennis and understand tennis at that age but having relived it. Now what did you? What did you think I remember her hair? I remember asking my mom to do a French. Platt in the style. If Gabriella Sabatini I was mostly in tennis for the plots that stage had kept `priority double plots and the Sabatini fringe plots. I'd like to think my mattessich become slightly more sophisticated over. The is she's she. She is was completely magnetic wasn't she? It's funny even as he say she was down in both sets even when she was down she was clearly the better player. I mean I'm looking forward to watching so much over the French and Wimbledon where where Monica Seles was was taken in her. In her pumpkin showing all the brilliance that that led to that that run that that might describe because frankly in this match that we bought yesterday she was just second throughout. She was completely outclassed by she looked. She's made to look pretty lumbering. At times. By the touch and the variety of Sabatini. She read instantly a she. She reminded me of Emily Marasmus it was. It was really stark comparison to me. That sort of the power is there. But it's deployed very sparingly quite often. It's IT'S HEAVY. Topspin Moon balls with knifes slice in lovely thrown in lovely touch at the net. But but yeah the to inject pace Will and obviously the single handed backhand comparison as well I. I didn't really know that that was how she played tennis. I guess I just thought I know her slam came at the. Us Open but in my head sort of play called specialists from South America you you get a picture in your mind if the the brand of tennis that likely to play and goodness me. She is so much more than that. What did you think Matt Watching? What we witnessed. Well I'd read a quote from Sabatini saying that she loves what Ching Spotty and to then watch Sabatini play. That quote immediately made so much sense the variety. In in Sabatini's game I I found most fascinating the way she was able to use a slice on the clay as such a weapon and in particular against Salish the fact that she made salish after take her second hand off the racket and hit the ball with just just left. Hand oversee set famously double-handed on both sides. That was how she was most comfortable hitting the bull that so many times in this match Sabatini actually used the slice to get a to get a software reply from from seven to take that hand off and then used forehand to sort of maneuver her around the court and then obviously that obviously the other thing that stood out the connection that she had with the fans..
