"The greatest experience you can have. So now it's time for the final segment of the show. It's called the laughing round. It is like a lightning round, but because this is a comedy podcast, I call it a laughing round. Okay. So shorter questions, I think they will be easier. Do you have a favorite joke joke? Street joke, dad joke, knock knock joke, or any joke you think of when I ask you, do you know any jokes? My favorite joke is a Sarah Silverman joke that she did in a stand up special, a while ago. She was telling about a guy dunking his balls in a glass of water. And then floating, and that's how she knew that his balls were a witch. That is my favorite joke of all time and will always be my favorite joke. It is such an unexpected logical leap. And to say that his balls plural were a witch is just beautiful writing. Is there a character or sketch that you wish you could steal a thing that happened in any time the history of sketch, or character, comedy that you were like, I wish that was mine. I wish I got to be that person. I got wish I wish I created it. I wish I got to perform that person. Mary Kevin Gallagher. Final answer. Yeah. Do you have a short story of an interaction with a famous comedian living or dead that you would be willing to share with us? Famous comedian. Or comedy maker of any sort. No, I can only think of stories about 80 grand. Sure. She's a famous comedian. She's a legend. She is. What's at 80 Brian's story you're willing to share. You're comfortable sharing. If it's a story, and there's another person, I think it counts. We shared an office for many years, and this one time I was eating a scone. And I was like, I'm done. I'm done with this scone, and I had about half of it left. And I put it in the garbage. And then an hour went by 80 came in, we checked in, we talked about our lives, and I was hungry again, so I reached into the garbage and pulled out the scone. And she was like, that's my friend. Sewn on plus. Just and I can think of countless times when we did little things that might horrify someone else, but we're just completely. Understandable for the other. And that's friendship. Do you have any advice for an aspiring comedian or comedy maker? Oh, okay, yeah, I have advice for aspiring comedians for sure. And my advice would be to just perform as much as humanly possible. In any context, doing anything that you wouldn't later regret putting on the Internet. That should be said. But like, I know that I. When I was coming up, I was like part of the UCB community and I did a bunch of one woman shows there, but I was also on sketch teams and I did people were making videos every weekend and I sort of fell in with that community and performed what I'm assuming amounted to about 10,000 hours. As Malcolm gladwell recommends and I think you do need that in order to. Figure out who you are and what you want to say. Yeah. There's no shortcut. You just have to. Spend so much time performing in the sketchiest places. Is there a sketch from your time at the show? I'm sure there is that you thought was so funny, maybe you tried multiple times, maybe when you pictured once who knows how far it got, you're like, this sketch is so funny and you tried it, and at some point, it did not work, but you will go to your grave, still being like, they were wrong. That was a good idea. I have one that I can't say because if I ever host, I'm trying it you guys. But there was a year my life at SNL when I tried every other week. To play us Scottish person. I tried in every possible permutation you could think of. I tried to be a magical troll that was Scottish, I tried to be the prime minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, I tried to be random. I and you're not, you know, if something doesn't go well at the table, the unwritten rules that you gotta wait until it's fresh again in people's minds. I could not wait. I had to try again, and I think everyone at the end of the year was ready to do some kind of intervention with me and be like, Kate. The Scottish thing. For whatever reason, it's not working. And you need to let it go. What was it? About it. I don't know. I think the voice might have been just too far outside the realm of relatability, to be funny to people. Or maybe it was just more funny to me because I am a Scottish descent. I know plenty of Scots and I it was

"I get that. I really do. I feel I use humor in that way. And most people do. Yeah. So I want to discuss what did you land on to use sketch parlance like the game of what her thing is? What did she want? What was getting in her way? What does she think about this? How does she think about these things that are happening to her? And how does it represent to sort of comedy of this person? Well, my favorite sketch is one of the, I mean, I have so many favorites, but one of my favorite sketch formats is the format of the Lawrence Welk show and do nice. I love two normals and a weird or three normal is that a weird. It's my favorite thing. And. I love being the weird one. Obviously, I mean, most of the characters I've ever played are like the weird one in a group of three normals. And this was certainly no exception and I didn't I would never have thought to have the normal thing be. Having like a beautiful alien encounter. That's the genius of my game street. They just are like masters of setup. And among many other things, but so they just to think of like, it's sort of a trope that you've heard about like a person being abducted by aliens and seeing God and suddenly knowing the beautiful secrets and mysteries of the universe. And then you also another trope is just getting sort of like loosely probed and hanging out in basically the basement of a spaceship. And. To juxtapose those two experiences. Is the definition of comedy? Or one of them? Yeah. Can you talk about company in several different frameworks, but that's certainly one of them. You get at one of my favorite things about this sketch, which is that cecily ends up being the straight character and all these huge ones that consistency, even though she's a quite a weird person. But she's plays it and everyone in the reality of this sketch is like, well, cecily's being normal. So then she'll describe this weird thing. And usually in a sketch, the weird character says something weird and then someone goes like, what are you talking about? And you get a laugh, but you do that. You go, you have each one, you go, what? And it's like, even though she's, in some ways, what's exciting is that it's a weird character, but just like you're the norm in your head, you're the only one acting normal about this. Like she's very plain spoken about it. That's interesting. I never thought about it like that. I just always see things in terms of popularity. So I just see two people who are probably popular in this town who had a good experience and then me. Which was just like drawing on my own life a little too much. You referred to how you relate to this character. In general, different sketch actors will have different amounts of how much of themselves is close to the surface of the character, how deep they are. I think on SNL, it often benefits to sort of you can kind of get like, oh, that's Kate doing that. Do you have thoughts about that? How much do you either in this sketch or there's some other characters, obviously, like doctor, we know this who fully is you doing a character? The bit is I'm doing a character right now. How do you think about that? I feel that in everything I've ever done, there's part of me that's in it. Or else I wouldn't have been able to do it. I had to find something that was similar to the person that I, some facet of myself that was recognizable within doing. And those varied by degree. And so this was one of the ones that was like that I felt most attuned to. So the first time it was a sensation, partly because everyone breaks. How did you everyone about you for the most part? Though you smile a little bit. How do you remember it going? What was that first one like? Looking back on my decade at SNL, it was the greatest thing ever. Like, just every time we rehearse it, there was laughter, and it just felt like soaring. Just performing it. And that's because the writing was so good. And I was so excited for people to hear the turns of phrase. That the guys had written. And they responded in a way that I hoped they would. And it was certainly one of the top three moments I've had doing sketch comedy. Yeah. Mikey and streeter described you as an assassin where you were deliberately trying to get people to work. Do you remember doing that? Once you felt like Ryan was gonna go, were you then being like, let's see if I can get everyone. It felt like 80, it was very important for you. And then there's a moment at the end. The sketch is over and you're all walking out and then Bobby shakes his head and he's like, like he had a grid his teeth to get through it. Was there any part of you that was like, let's see if I can get at least 80 or the people. Everyone else because Ryan was gone. I wasn't, I didn't expect that to happen. I didn't expect my colleagues to break. I suspected the sketch would go very well, but I didn't expect that. And I think it's just we all knew that the writing was so good. And that we were all just like delighting in it. I remember one line from the sketch that's like, we weren't messing with the top brass, we weren't dealing with the top brass. Yeah. That is so. Funny. And I just, I think we were all like, wow, amazing writing. We're laughing. The joy, it's so joyful. In general, how did you feel breaking? You didn't break in these, but there are sketches you'd broken, you would sometimes break when you're doing things with 80. How did you feel about it in those moments? I felt ashamed because we're not supposed to, and there's something unprofessional about it. And yet, sometimes

"So I had to just chill up there with madam cuckoo and prune shoe. To a place open up. Man. Man, you got screwed. What do you think, Todd? Well, we'd like to take you guys for physical examinations now. Yeah, all right. They're gonna be in a knocker stuff. Possibly, I'm sorry. No, no, don't be. Just be gentle because they're pretty banged up. Tell me about God. What's God's deal? I am here with Kate McKinnon. Thank you so much for joining me. Thank you, Jesse, for having me on your podcast. That's exciting. Yes. I agree. So we're going to start talking about close encounters and the sketches were originally written by Mikey day and streeter seidell, two writers and SNL Mikey now at cast member. Back in 2015, do you remember them telling you the idea and sort of what was going through your mind when they first mentioned it? Well, I definitely didn't have anything. For that week, I know that, and usually when that happens, you just sort of scrounge and try to do something but ever so often every so often. Someone will put a miracle in your lap and the two of them came up to me and Mikey day who knows me very well and who understands me in ways that most people don't just came up to me with this idea about a woman who gets short shrift during an alien abduction and I thought it was so funny. See Mikey knows that do you see the headphones I'm wearing? They're like 90s over the ear headphones and Mikey started calling them my Rite Aid comfy. Which is sort of almost what they're called. He understands that I'm kind of like, you know, I don't dress so fancy. I like stuff that's like kind of bad. Yeah. And I relish in nasty little bad experiences and so he thought that I could just sort of play myself in this scenario and then it might work out. And so they typed up a draft, I didn't even have to do anything I pitched like a couple ideas. I think I pitched the thing about them batting my knockers around. My breasts, you see. And then, but they wrote this draft and then it was just like it didn't need anything. And that never happens. Usually you have to hone over the week or find what you're really trying to write about. They just, it came out perfect the first time and it was amazing and everyone was really laughing at the table and I added the fact that she smokes at the table with the pretzel stick. Just because it seemed like she would be smoking. But they really did the rest and they did everything and they're so unbelievable. Before we get more into it as we're talking about writing, you know, what is your typical Tuesday writing night schedule? Like are you an early person then leave early ish? Are you there super late? How do you like to sort of play it? In real life, I wake up at like 8 and I go to bed around midnight. So this whole decade has been sort of hard in that regard. Initially when I started, I was I was staying till like 6 in the morning and then that became earlier and earlier over the years. And I feel guilty about that. Yeah, I do. I do, but I try to contribute as best I could. In the hours when I was actually awake and functional. When it is a sketch of your more active in the writing on Colin Jost once described you as a meticulous, very cerebral writer, what is writing look like for you? I must do it in conjunction with someone who's a great writer. And the only thing that ever made sense to me was doing a funny voice. So I have always worked from the sound of a voice. Which makes impressions easy because you just copy what's already there. And then I have other voices that just sort of naturally occur to me. So I just would sort of sit there and talk in that voice and contribute in that way. Was this a character that started with the voice? How did you start building the character once you sort of saw the script? Like what was the first step? This is just a person who I knew would talk exactly like me. So I really, it was just the addition of a pretzel stick as a cigarette that was the only character building element. It just, that's me, baby. That's how I am. That's how I talk. I'm rafferty, all right? I made a junk. And that's so it was not nothing about it was a stretch. At all. So it was really nice. I guess then how do you then elevate it, right? It's like when you were like, okay, well, you sort of, or otherwise, but she has to have a background. She has to not be a Saturday Night Live cast member. Like, are you conceiving of this person's life beyond the walls of this sketch? The dudes really had this picture of a woman who lived in what we all assumed was like Nevada somewhere and like worked. For me, I hear a voice and details just start to emerge and then a hairstyle begins tumor. Hair is the next thing. That's the next most important character defining trait. And then an outfit begins to grow from that and this idea of like a person who. Is like the kind of person who gets abducted by aliens, but is like the worst of that. To me, suggested a whole an endless world of, you know, if that, then what? And it just was just sort of like, some things feel like they already exist and you just have to pluck them from the sky and flush them out a little bit. And this was this felt like one of those. Yeah. When you're talking about the hair and the look, what were the conversations like about like, how did you describe this hair to the hair department? How do you describe her look to the clothes department, whatever they're called? Wardrobe department. I knew that she would have hair that was like short. A haircut that suggests a person who doesn't want to have to deal with anything. And has gone a little gray and is just sort of like, I don't care, you guys. And has clothes that also say, I don't care, you guys. And you know, she's a very, she's a very avoidant person. And what do you mean by that? She, she's not gonna like try to make life better. Than it is. She's resigned. And she is able to find joy in what she knows is her reality anyway. And to have a sense of humor about that. And.

"Agent kirkpatrick. Now we know you've all been through quite an ordeal. So we appreciate you making the trip to Washington on such short notice. Yes, you three experience the first verified case of alien abduction, so naturally you are great interest of the United States government. It was nuts, man. I mean. We're just small town buds. You saw UFO in the Woods. I mean, now we're hung out with the government. Okay. Now, after the blue light pulled you into the spacecraft, what is your next memory? I came to and saw a beautiful being made of like a beautiful calming light. You same here. That being touched my head, and I felt every emotion in its purest form. It was amazing, and I cried, sir. And you, miss rafferty? Wow. What floor were you guys on? I woke up in a dirty metal dome, and 40 little gray aliens watch me pee in a steel bowl. And they took the bowl walked out. Interesting. Were these beings also bathed in light? No, no, they were gray with big fat eyes, little mouths. They just stared while I peed. I don't think I was dealing with the top brass. And how did they instruct you to urinate? Was that telepathically? No, no. I woke up by an appeal like a camel. So I started peeing in one of the gray aliens slapped the wall. And pointed at the bowl. So I got the hint. I kind of ducked walked over a ball pen.

"A joke scene or sketch of theirs and discuss all that went into making it. This week's guest is Kate McKinnon, who you most definitely know from her 11 seasons of Saturday Night Live, which resulted in an unprecedented 9 consecutive Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series. She joined the show right when christen wiig was leaving and quickly Kate took over her hero spot as the show's most prominent cast member. Showing a range in terms of characters and impressions and just types of sketches, and it was so complete it grew easy to take her for granted almost. But her leaving allows you to look at her decade plus as a whole and realize it was easily one of the greatest runs in the history of the show. Honestly, she could have left earlier not to say that I wanted her to, just that I kind of assumed she would because she's already becoming a very in demand movie actress, and that usually is a sign that someone's leaving. But as we'll be clear in this interview, Kate really love being on SNL. Yes, it was always her dream, but it was more than that. Kate has always been admittedly very shy, very quiet. But at a young age, he realized through funny voices and impressions. She was able to speak up. She was able to communicate. She was able to process the difficult parts of life like her father passing away when she was 18. This all to say that though we talk about process and funny characters, this is an emotional conversation. The jumping off point will be Colleen rafferty, a character Kate played on SNL 7 times, who is best known for being abducted by aliens and making guest stars and her colleagues break. Creative with writer streeter Seidel and Mikey day, it was also the character in which Kate chose to say goodbye through. But we're going to start at the beginning with the very first close encounter sketch from December 5th, 2015. Also in the sketch, you will hear AD Bryant and Bobby moynihan as the interrogating agents, and Cecily Strong and that week's host Ryan Gosling as the other abductees. Fun fact, all of those people are former guests of this podcast. It excluding Ryan Gosling, of course. Though, if you are listening Ryan Gosling, I'm happy to have you on to discuss your spooky Halloween band dead man's bones. If you've never seen the sketch, which would be a shock considering it has like 55 million views on YouTube. I'd really recommend it just to see your physicality, how she's dressed in her hair and how she smokes a cigarette and ashes it into her coffee cup. So we will link to all the versions of the sketch in our show notes. So here is Kate McKinnon. I'm agent Morris with the NSA, and this is special

"But here's the real deal, okay? I'm gonna tell you something that no one else is gonna tell you, because they don't have the balls to say it. And it's not even a ballsy statement. It's just so fucking obvious. You're trying to honor a man for being a funny Asian, right? We get it. In light of all the stop Asian hate, all that bullshit, it's become a thing to hold up Asian people in Asian cultures so that we can all get along and hopefully forget that it was China who developed the fucking pandemic that changed the world and fucked up everything. We all see what's going on. And if you add Joe Biden's heart on for the middle kingdom, it's really not surprising Boeing Yang would get a nomination. It's perfect timing. After fucking parasite won best picture, you could just see how badly America was about to go down on any and all Asian cultures. It's gross. But here's the real truth of the matter. Boeing Yang is funny, not because he's Asian. He's funny because he's gay because he's openly gay. He's a very creative, very funny, gay dude. That's why he stands out in sketches that he performs in or rights. It's his over the top queer attitude, something we've rarely seen if ever on SNL. Terry Sweeney was openly gay. He wasn't that funny. John millhiser, you don't even know the fuck he is. He was on SNL. He's gay. You know, solar, Denny Dillon. Did he advance? No one knew she was a lesbian to let her she died. Punky Johnson was gay. None of them are funny. Let alone over the top gay. Kate McKinnon, we know is a lesbian and maybe one of the top 5 funniest members of all time. But you never know she was a lesbian until somebody told you. But Boeing Yang is the type of gay dude that leaves the fucking pride parade down the streets of vintage village and ends up finding a glory hole in the meatpacking district. "Now four lines and then weaken. You know, kind of mold those lines into you know versus that. Make sense to you right now To the word back, he writes out O w E mean so like at the table, I do it right on, then. Yeah. What's up with that? And then one more time we way What's up with that? And that's the chorus, you know, timing out and then we go from there. What? No, no, is one of these more Sort of fill in for you creating a new character in a new situation like that. We're doing an impression of somebody. What are the different parts of the brand? I don't know if his different parts of the brain It's definitely people's forte, one of the other I feel like I think we're good at impressions and your semi gated character work or you're really good care of her work and in your semi good at impressions and then you know, Of course, there's some people that could do it all. Like Kate McKinnon, you know, but For me, like impressions come very naturally to me. Like when I saw Billy Porter yesterday, I was like, Oh, I got my next character guaranteed you And if you would like the workshop it, please. It's just one of those things. People just fall out of this guy, especially in New York. Like Jenny McMillan was one of those things like I would have never researched. You know, a character that behaved like Jimmy McMillan. But he happened to be a guy that you know, look like the floor axe and We talked about the rant being too high. We were worried about Agent orange. One is like you can't make these things up. Please. I can't. One of my favorite Impressions of yours that happened in a sketch was it was kind of it's kind of controversial, but it was you did Bill Cosby in jail? So what do you in here for? You don't ask a man that in here you put your head down. Keep the business. Wow, Old timer. You really know the ropes. I've never done time before. This friggin sucks. Hey, you don't come in me..

'Saturday Night Live': Why is Leslie Jones Leaving the Show?

"Jones is leaving saturday night life <hes>. She's been there for a little while. It's been therefore many <hes> there's no specifics yet about why but they just say that she has opted to depart. The series won't instead focus on her upcoming feature film projects and her netflix comedy special. I didn't realize she had a knife was comedy special coming up <hes> she's been on s._n._l. Since two two thousand fourteen okay so it's been a little while but opted to depart she's department is that what are you reading this hollywood reporter dot com so you know what's real right. I know i wasn't saying was fake news but i'm thinking of the language that's used it. Just spin is not sell celebrate story as it should be like usually folks leave them. We think about them. Moving on like oh snap they graduated from saturday night live and about to do some shit unless there was scandal tied to it like six year left or whatever there was some scandals like what why why isn't the p._r. Of this being framed as some type of celebratory. She's graduating from from that shit. I think she was probably given a contract or lagasse. You probably don't wanna signing in and it's like but that happens. Every day is positive because i because i think that maybe she might not have the right p._r. Team behind her to get in front of put it out because of s. and l.'s team put it out then. They're putting it out like oh. She's no longer going to be with us. Whatever whatever whatever and then whoever at the hollywood reporter is kind of figuring out like well. What does she have to do. You know what i mean like if it depends on who's controlling that story if i mean what happens with what have i everything you're saying understand totally makes sense. I have to the say it out loud because i feel like this is. This is what happens to black women. This is what happens to black people get further. This is what happens to black women. She had an amazing run on saturday night live. Why isn't the spin whoever is around webb isn't shot. Why and here's the let's pretend right and let's let's run with your theory that <hes> they want her to sign a contract. You don't want to sign whatever so now s._n._l. Perhaps is controlling the story right. We run with that what does s._n._l. Gain as the white powerhouse that it is is from spinning the story in a way that's not celebratory in a way that's not we loved having leslie jones with us because we love having black women and women of color on our team. We wish the best like well also as that so i i haven't i haven't looking. I haven't seen any like something official from s._n._l. Zero things that twitter and this is just all yeah. I put that shit and all this but the thing is like a comedian yet. I'm committing person so like. I have like a a a a a very weird perspective on it because i'm like i can z. s._n._l. Doing that but it's also like that p._r. Team has to be <hes>. I guess i don't wanna say like woke enough but like aware enough to to be like no. This is a celebratory thing because if s._n._l. They might take her not resigning as a slight and if they take it as a slight like what you're not gonna sign. What does it get. You know what we do here. That's supposed to be on t. o. Now you don't wanna be on the team okay. We're going to let the press known at you ain't gonna be on and we're not gonna make it a celebratory thing just because we will assaulting that could be what it is that literally can be just what it is and it's like it's unfortunate. If that is the case it could also be like leslie could've got right off the phone one of her friends and one of her friends another one her friend's taught to another one of her friends and then it got to hollywood reporter and s._n._l. And leslie don't want to come out like that. You know what i mean. It's it's a but i think if the only way i feel that way it should have been done correctly and it's also time is like whatever but if leslie knew that she wasn't going to come back to the was hard decision it up before the and i'm reading this from deadline now <hes> it was jones decision decision according to sources it was jones decision to depart before the n._f._l. Contract the standard s._n._l. Kasa she'll leaving seven years. The actors options are picked up. Every year and performance can also ask to be released early so that's that's another part of it too because remember when i don't know if you guys remember when like kristen wig left and it was just fireworks this this is her last show they brought tina backboard everybody back and it was a thing and we haven't really seen that and even for the other cast members when when when jay farrar left it wasn't the only piece when share leftovers name a white person who is like what like well <hes> jason davidson away but i i wouldn't even say really famous by that but also it was like even though he was like he wasn't like the the star he was part of the starting team team but he wasn't like the star and that starting team where leslie is a you know who is. She's a starter so it's like it's like if if if you have a team and you have like one of your biggest franchise players leaving utah. I think you should want to spin it because you're kind of like hey. This says we got her from like. You didn't even know who she was. You know and look at her stock and we can't wait because now we're actually looking to fill this void of of we need. We need a dope strong. Black woman like well to do again. I'll say these are not from s._n._l. Themselves or lessee's official sources deadline headline stuff but somebody found out that info and now it's everywhere lawyers get like that can get out any way but like in a sense of like the optics optics of it. I do look at things like that because it's like i have friends who work at us now and it's like oh. This is interesting might be some text later kind of don't care that much but as a comedian in the industry. You look at things like that just like man if that was me how i wanted to be played out. I would want it to be a thing where i'm ahead of. It and i'm talking about it and i'm. I'm big up the old house as i go into my own thing but i also think as an artist up the old yes they'll. Hey say gaza dope you guys. Were dope native language. Yeah you know what i mean. I'm on my way right but it's it's a as an artist. I can imagine that leslie might wanna do some other shit. She can't tour stand up wise like she's a standup. You know what i mean. She never wasn't s._n._l. Type of thing. She's a stand a person so for those five years. She had to be in new york to learn these things that are right these things she this is probably not the life she wants and especially when you see someone like kate mckinnon who actually renewed her contract renewed a contract. It's funny that you talk about framing because every single article when it gets to the point like it says says some other shit in the lead and then it says she opted not to renew and then it says comma semicolon wherever the fuck kate mckinnon renewed her contract and i'm like okay that's that's ask my regardless to what really happened the framing of it. It's problematic me. You know as

So the Emmys it considering ditching the present to all together and tell us more. The phone critic Karen, Christina vich me now nicely back laughing. Thing you the night, south wins or loses depending on the host that is true. I mean, obviously, sometimes if they're being rude to guests play music over their heartfelt things. Then that's not so good either or it runs over people don't like that. But generally, yes, if you've got a bad host, people would turn off though people do turn off. They show after eleven o'clock at night, you lose hundred thousand viewers a minute. Here's done it. Well in the past, and who's in who's a sting, okay? The reason the reason okay, this is all about numbers. And because it's trendies world about trends. So last year that Oscars suddenly went without a host. I mean obviously they've done it before. But and the ratings were really high, they were six point four with huge huge figures of twenty six twenty six million now last year's Emmys had a two point four ratings, the lowest in history, with ten point two million viewers. So the Oscars leading the way and they think. Emmys are going. Well, maybe we should do that too, because we're really bleeding viewers. I mean last year, Kate McKinnon and Keenan Thompson walked out of the top of the show, and everybody was like, oh host, but then they didn't. And then will they knew they weren't going to, because it was Colin Jost, and Michael, Michael j, but the only real unexpected capper was a wedding wedding proposal by an Oscar director. So there you go. So how we got to this stage, we've got to the point, okay?

"Okay. So while you were gone while you were out, Bradley when you're on your vacation during the week that you were gone one of the things that kind of caught the people's attention was this HBO documentary called the inventor, and it is a documentary about Elizabeth homes. That's not a name that you probably immediately. No. But she was the creator in the president of a company called theranos and the documentary is all about basically, how this woman who dropped out of college out of Sanford. To create this desktop or or countertop blood. Blood testing machine. How she began her empire how she was able to get nine hundred million dollars in investment cap capital for this invention, and it all turned out to be a fraud. And that's what this HBO documentaries about. No. I've heard the story. I mean, not the details of the story. But I've heard about the story for a while. And you know, now, it seems that the media has become an rap in rapture interested in this particular story enamored, but there has been a lot of interest about the telling of this story. And I think even after watching that documentary you come out of it with a lot of questions. And so there's this is like a hotbed of activity when it comes to how they can retell the story in different ways. Here's a new way. It was announced today that Kate McKinnon who you know, from Saturday Night Live has been tapped to produce AM star in a series that Hulu is ordering called the dropout. It's a mini series about the rise. And fall of Elizabeth homes, the creator and founder of theranos. Now, the thing that's really interesting about this. First of all, I do not have any information about whether how this is going to be played whether this is going to have sort of a comedic element to it. Or if it's going to be played dramatically. She's done both. I mean, we mostly know her from comedy, but she has played serious roles before his way were straight roles. The thing about the thing about the character of Elizabeth homes is that one of. The things that people notice about her immediately. Actually, there's two things that people notice about her immediately. And both of them were pointed out in the documentary. The inventor HBO one of them is she does not blink. It is very bizarre an unnerving. She does not Blake. So when one person was talking about being interviewed by her. He said I noticed she wasn't blinking. And so I had to sit and hold I contact with her because I wasn't going to be the one to blink first. The woman doesn't blink. So that's like the first thing, which I could just see Kate McKinnon taking that and like really infusing that into a character making it funny or interesting the other thing about Elizabeth homes. And this is the thing that had everybody talking that week was that she would lower her voice like on purpose. So that she could sound more than in all the interviews. You saw her. She was speaking of this manufacturer, low voice. It was so bizarre. It's very creepy. So Kate McKinnon, she's good. I mean, this seems like a role that she would be very well suited for. Absolutely. And I think in a she is so talented. I think we've only begun to scratched the surface of the talent of. Kate McKinnon and giving her the opportunity to both produce and star in the role. You know, this isn't the only project that allegedly has been sort of inspired by the popularity of that HBO documentary because we also heard that. Jennifer Lawrence was being cast as Elizabeth homes in some in another movie. Now Hollywood saying earlier today that it does not look like that is in production. It just it's been announced at this point in. That's according to I m d so that means that she is set to play that role, but we don't know necessarily. We don't I will say that the the TV show will be called the dropout the mini series with Kate. Mckinnon will be called the dropout, and that is based on a podcast of the same name about this very same story. And by the way, one of the people who hosts that podcast is is a gal by the name of Rebecca Jarvis. Who's a Minnesotan five? Bizarrely familiar used to be on the what? The whatever show. I know these things what's the whatever show. So the whatever show was this show that was on channel eleven for many years that was hosted by teens. Yeah. Whatever. Beca jarvis. Yes. So she was one of the hosts on that show. And that's how I know of how thrown it back. Yeah. But she, but she's actually a successful. I believe he's like a financial reporter now successful American journalists the chief business economics and technology correspondent for ABC news. Yeah. And the host and creator and managing editor of a real busy with Rebecca Jarvis. Oh, good for her. She's a big darn deal. Minnesota Minnesota.

Hillary Clinton still doesn't get it

"On Sunday. Hillary Clinton was interviewed on CBS Sunday morning and offered up some surprising new comments about her husband's actually not really that surprising new comments because they were kind of rehashing of old comments. I, I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed about her husband's affair with Monica Lewinsky when asked whether she felt her husband former president of the United States abused his power by having an affair with Monica Lewinsky. She said no added that Lewinsky quote wasn't adult when it happened later. She was asked if her husband should have stepped down after the scandal. And she said, absolutely not then in very Trumpian move. She pivoted the conversation to Trump's scandals, she said, but let me ask you this, where's the investigation of the current incumbent against whom numerous allegations have been made in which he dismisses denies ridicules. Okay. Megan, what did you think about this moment in Hillary Clinton's continued refusal to see how there's anything wrong with what happened. So I have like a lot of friends who are bad, and I don't mean like bad people but bad in the sense of you'd have to like, give them a talking to before you like brought them to a black tie. Event, you know, they might get a little wild, but they're my asshole. You know, like I'm loyal to them because I'm like, they're my girl forever. And Hillary continues to disappoint and enrage me. But I'm like, you know what? She's my asshole. I. Well, it's just so hard because we we, as as this self-aware group of the population have to constantly be like, why did they do that? This Elizabeth Warren DNA it's like this constant like disappointment because we are self aware and we do have self reflection and the Republicans just get to do none of that. They just get to be like, Yup, I don't know. Lindsey, Graham said another racist, crazy thing, but that's our guy. And so I have decided that that's how I'm going to be now I'm gonna have no. Well, no, I have to have some because then I am deeply upset, but. I just don't know. She makes it so hard to to defend her and I do. I really do love her, and I think she is so valuable in so many ways. And so then I want to be like, can you just stop interviewing her? Can you just interview someone else? I I liked Hillary, right, right after the election where she was like in the woods and we maybe saw her with like a Cape taking long walks in in in the woods, and maybe she like had, I think she had dinner with Kate McKinnon and there was like a photo shoot, and it was like, oh, well, 'cause they'd be talking about and it was beautiful. And now this kind of stuff happens and it's very disappointing. It's very disappointed and I'm not about silencing women by any means except for when they need to be silent. And I just, I man, this is asking thing questions. I think. I think he'll dog you gotta you gotta just PR team should be like, we're done. Actually. We're done forever. I just, I think that this is not. I don't think Hillary Clinton is the only person that has these views like in the I think that this is a generational thing do and it's sort of. Reflective. I read this piece in the guardian for I'm forgetting right now off the top of my head who wrote it, but this person who wrote the piece in the guardian pointed out that it's a

Coming out, this weekend what's hot what's not? With Kevin car? Kevin, how are you. Man I'm doing well how? Are you doing. Today we're doing great so what are? We talking about today we're talking. About, the spy movie yeah the. Spy. Who dumped me yeah I'm, sorry that does not look. Good No I mean it's a. It's a girl that kind? Of movie you. Know what I mean it's abroad competent Upon The general broad comedy that that that should hit a group of. People it's about a meal kunas as a woman who's done by her boyfriend who turns out to be a, spy and she has to travel to Europe to try and finish his. Mission and she brings along her best friend played by Kate McKinnon There's sort of this sub genre of movies that are the the comedy spy, movie we did that with the hit man's bodyguard last year and they. Did spy with most of them go down movie was hilarious Yeah I mean, I actually kinda. Like these, kinds of, movies. Because they run longer than your standard. Average comedy but that's because they throw an action sequences in there and then this one you've got our chases. You got him shoot them ups you've got you know explosions you've got people trying to escape. It they have bonafide action secrets hanging out of a, helicopter like Tom Cruise was last week or. This week still but still Action, movies and their whimsical enough of a. Of. A comedy, and if you like the people involved I think we'll kunas fine there's there's some good laughs, in there Kate McKinnon I can only take so much. Of her she's great, on Saturday Night Live and five minute, chunks but I. Don't think, her stick, moves. All the way through a movie I. Think she needs to sort of revived room refiner delivery to do features right yeah she's a little manic for, my taste Yeah Describing are so fine for date night movie or girls night. Out, yeah Works. The other one I saw Kevin was Christopher Robin Wright with the story it has guy the guy who's in Star Wars. McGregor Yeah Yeah he plays Christopher Robin after he grows up and becomes an adult and he's learned he's got thrown given, away sort of left all the childhood things. Behind he basically becomes an old fart you, know and he's leave to reconnect with his. Childhood and so the was, like, hey go help me by my friends and they go up to the hundred acre wood and actually new McGregor does a great job in it because he's able to BV no nonsense, adult but then also become sort of get that childlike wonder again without seeming overly cheesy and, I, it's he's great in the, movie but also? What what really makes a click are the the characters you've got? These, well, they're they're not live action because, they're they're, CGI but you've. Got You know we, need a and piglet and you're and tigger. And you've got all the characters from the, hundred acre wood showing up and when they. Show up it's adorable and, charming, and wonderful and brings you back to your childhood the the biggest struggles getting to that like first half hour where Christopher Robin's not the Robin we remember if just takes a little, bit of time but you know when when when your shows up kick kicks off the movie, and, in your ass all the, trailer right the? Last time at the theater and I mean the CGI of bringing? Those, characters, is really really good I mean, they good, job with that Yeah I think this came out of them wanting to Disney wanting to do a live, action Winnie the Pooh, movie and they sort of did the hook. Thing you know that movie with Robin Williams back almost thirty years. Ago but I, mean I'd love to see more just sort of hundred acre wood stories with just a just. Toys, I I'd be happy to do a whole new remake blustery day for the big screen as a feature, film and I. Would I would go see that without a. Problem, now, Kevin I just saw. That I guess this movie won't get released in, China which if you wanted to get that Margaret because there's like, whatever how many billion? People what's the reason for? That I. Heard I've seen that story just because the Winnie the Pooh character is like the the sign of government. Resistance it's like associated with that over. There so it's not, like you? Know China's rule Do you need a better? Resistance model Simple is Winnie the Pooh.

The Spy Who Dumped Me Director Susanna Fogel Interview

"There was a report out this week from USC Annenberg its annual research into inequality in the top one hundred grossing films of the prior year. Literally, the first line in the thing is the needle is not moving onscreen for females in film. Women are still under-represented on camera and they are underrepresented behind it as well of the one hundred nine people who directed a top movie in two thousand seventeen. Just eight of them were women and even more rare than a female director in Hollywood is a female director doing an action. Comedy movie much less such a film with female leads. Redder director, Susanna Fogel is doing it though her movie out tomorrow starring Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon is called the spy who dumped me. Thanks for coming in. Thanks for having me. Tell me why you wanted to make this movie now shameless opportunism and ain't that the way. I mean. You know, the reason is really that I have always wanted to tell stories about friendships and it used to be that there was a place for for friendship stories in in the cinema. And now it feels like there's a a real binary between awards, drama type fair that you buy ticket to and ten pulse. And then I think I started to shift my own paradigm about was there like Jonah hybrid that I could explore that would make my my very small character stories cinematic. And so that's kind of what prompted this whole experience this. This is actually further down Melissa questions that I wanted to ask you about, but you wrote a piece in time magazine a couple years ago about a little bit about the culture of Hollywood sort of gender wise, but also about the culture of Hollywood mentor was and how you find people who can encourage you to do what you wanna do. And I think I think it's it. I think that's a lesser known part of the story of Hollywood today. Yeah. I mean, I think especially for women, it's it's just been hard and I think it sort of in some ways runs across purposes with the very necessary progress around me too. And that because it's sort of like if you're looking for a mentor had a very experienced director and there just aren't a lot of women who've been doing that for that long. Your your options are older men and and those older men probably rightly so have a certain amount of trepidation about entering into a mentorship relationship with the woman. It's kind of something that people don't talk about enough, I think. Have you to change at all in sixteen years you've been doing this? Yeah, definitely. I have felt that there's a lot of receptiveness to female stories now. I think some of it is a little bit. A lot of it is economically driven and driven by just kind of studios wanting to check that box because now they know they have a woman problem that they need to solve. Yeah. Yeah. I, it's hard to suss out what is real excitement to tell underrepresented stories and and what is kind of just kind of people realizing that they need to kind of catch up to the times. But I think it's your one conversation away with a away from knowing whether it's offense or not. You can just talk to people in know whether they're saying, oh yeah, it's just like a guy's movie, but we'll just put a a famous woman in it, and it will be we'll solve our problem, and which is actually like, let's revisit these narratives because we're sick of the same stories over and over will an and that's just to the spy who don't me right? That's it's, it's named after bond movie in it being build and and being written about as a born type thing, but with women. But it's not because the dynamic that you see on screen is just by definition different between two women than it is between mitt. Yeah. It's interesting to me that that now talking about the movie a lot, I think about the politics and the gender politics so much in a way that maybe I didn't when I was just inside it. It's interesting, you know. So now I'm thinking, you know, there's one..

Review: 'The Spy Who Dumped Me'

"Hasn't he thinks a also does ticker, right? Yeah, he has a wonderful, wonderful. Originally Gilbert, Godfrey was supposed to. Busy being. I found it very moving, and surprisingly touching said in the back row weeping for my lost childhood, bring all the things that are no longer available to me, I think is a great family flick. So that's good. I saw the Middleburg film festival had a screening of puzzles. Stowing Kelly MacDonald, right? Yes. And she arrived in town and first of all, I would like to say she's very open about this. She's forty two years old and she looks like she's twenty five, and that's why she is a movie star because I won't tell you how old I am, but I look about thirty years older than that. And it's a nice little. Movie of a of a downtrodden housewife who finds her Mojo doing jigsaw puzzles that she finds a partner and, and you know, it's, it's not exciting. It's not. It's not loud or anything, but it's a nice. It's a, it's a nice coming of age film and don't just Google jigsaw accidentally. Cassava, Papa torture porn totally different than what you. Yes, she is a lovely actress in. We're talking about this the other day. I think it was off Mike, but just some of the things that she's been. She was first in Trainspotting as a child. Essentially, he was the baby on the ceiling. Boardwalk empire. She was in no country for old men. And that's to me because I know she Scottish and beautiful doing the boardwalk empire thing was very hard because she was Irish desires, but the southern Tekere western Texas accent. She had. She might as well been born in Odessa. Here's your own lady bird. How do they do? I don't know. So I'm a big fan and it's it's a lovely movie, and I saw the spy who dumped me the other night because somebody needed to go to that. Kunas and Kate McKinnon, and it's not very good would expect. And Kate McKinnon is squandering her talent. And so I am worried about she is Uber, talented, death, but even I think we all agree and you should never judge a movie on the trailer, and then we saw the trailer. It was like, oh, no, really? And so that you're telling me that my fears are confirmed. They play it like a Saturday Night Live sketch except it's two hours law to our. I wrote this down. It's one hundred sixteen minutes when she's Larry on SNL. I wonder why. I mean, what is it that you Ghostbusters. Needs to develop her own material or work with people who know her to develop stuff for her. That really doesn't have to just take any script. Melissa McCarthy will write her own. Sometimes it's hit or miss, but sometimes hilarious. Even Melissa McCarthy, I was thinking Melissa McCarthy because she needs a new breakout something to get her to the next. She's doing the same thing over and over. Again. It seems to me and Mila Kunis was hilarious. And Ted ten thought was Jerry, so they both can do it, but not this time not time. So here's a reminder and Hornets when she's in town reviews at Washington Post dot com. And I'm arch.

Morning Michael on the. Heels, of the bonafides by thriller mission impossible fallout we have a new spike comedy coming out this. Week called the spy who dumped me and this one's a bit of a mix of comedy and action film and we've. Seen these kind of movies before with like hit man's. Bodyguard or spy with Melissa McCarthy this one, stars me lacunas says a woman who was dumped by her boyfriend. And then learns out he's a spy. And he wants her to bring a package all the. Way, over to Europe for him along for the ride is Kate McKinnon as, her best friend basically playing the broad, comic relief Now like I said these these movies are. Somewhat popular and they, tend to run about. Two hours so they run longer, than a regular comedy and the reason for that is because the interspersed action with the comedy so you do have actually bonafide action sequences that are put together. Relatively. Well so if you wanna go see the excitement and the thrills, you've, got that you've got the car chases and you've got the gun play, but you also have the goofiness in, the Salinas and the absurdity of a spy thriller and in? The end it's? A funny, movie. It actually has more laughs than I expected it, is a girl out kind of film because it is very much a female Centric movie directed by, women Susanne full and of course it starts to very big names right. Now in comedy and in Hollywood in general another big attraction for the audience is going to be. Sam Hagen whose best known in the outlander series he plays another spy in the film that's mixed. Up in everything Mila Kunis I think is fine for what it is it's it's a movie that's cast well enough for what it needs to do and like you said it has the action it's A. Bit of a mix of styles but overall I found it to. Be.
