"Was in the g. league bubble. I didn't really have anything to do. But just saying the gym. That's what it felt like in detroit. I wouldn't be stepping outside in detroit. There are not many things you can do in detroit like that. Mr rose your namesake. Disrespected your hometown. How do you feel about his sentiments about your home city recipes. Genie cassandra roles ma. Beloved mom detroit native who created the name jalen that he carries. But if you think. I'm gonna come on this show and blast the nays say he gonna have to do a lot more than that. He's a terrific talent. He has a great personality and he has a flair for the dramatic. Jacoby you and i know what this is. This is competitive. Jealousy heating go number one overall going into the draft process. He said out of his mouth he he would love to be a pistol and go number one and live. Detroit will detroit took k. cunningham. So now he's creating a rivalry with k. cunningham who just so happened to get drafted by detroit. I don't know how many times he's been there to say that there's nowhere to hang out with newsflash. There's places the hanging out everywhere where you've got millions of dollars ladies and gentlemen. This is really one of those things. Would you look back at his career if he becomes what i believe he can become because i believe he got all nba special type of talent. We'll look back at this like we look at like. We look at kobe. It will say he took that sleight of not being over one or not getting chills into kate cunningham as motivation to fuel his fire. That's really all this is. It's not about detroit. They just happen to be.

"Detroit Red Wings legend Darren McCarty pick is in. Let's go to the podium with the commissioner. With the first pick in the 2021 NBA draft. The Detroit Pistons Select Kate Cunningham, Oklahoma Mistake University. Yes, Yes, yes, and you know what if you listen at all? Or read the Detroit News. Um Rod Beard has been calling for Cade Cunningham and all along. I had talked to him back before the lottery draft. And he was saying if we get one or two, but the fact we gotta one and we're joined now by the best looking beard, brother, in my opinion. Mister Rod Beard. Rod, How are you tonight? And what does this mean for this organization Got to select kid Cunningham for silver All Daryn. Thanks for having me on. I think it's a game changer for them that it gives them a face of the franchise. That, um, has some charisma has some personality about himself, and that's something that we haven't seen in this town for quite a bit of time. I mean, it's just been a revelation to see the way that he interacts with the media the way that he carries himself as the number one pick in the draft and Um, you can just you feel the magnetism there that fans like it. The media likes that everybody seems to gravitate toward what he's doing, and it's just refreshing to see You know, Rod. It's one of those things where Troy Weaver is going to say the right things, and he's going to take the phone calls, and I appreciate him doing his due diligence, But this was kind of destiny, right? I mean, once we found out that the Pistons had the number one pick, it was going to be caged, right? Yeah, I think that's the case that they just wanted to make sure they weren't missing out on anything. And you've got to keep the tires. You got to go to a test drive and you've got to make sure that you're asking the right questions. So that you don't get surprised at the end of that, and we've seen enough cases where it's going the other way with the Celtics and, um Getting Jayson Tatum instead of Mark Hill. Folds of fixers kind of blew that one. Um, but you just want to make sure that you don't miss out on something. So, yeah, they do their due diligence. They talk to all the other guys Jalen Greene and Evan Mobley, and they just try to make sure that there's no trade offer out there that they just didn't ask about. And you want to make sure you don't, um, shortchange yourself in that opportunity. You don't get the number one pick, obviously. Very often, but there was no trade hall that was going to be enough for them, so they settle back on the guy that fits them. The best and K. Cunningham is then. You know what the best thing to me is? You talked about it, but it's the maturity of Kate Cunningham. And I don't know if that's because he's a young father. Or the way he's been raised in the situation, But the fact that you're going to put this franchise in his hands as a Detroit Pistons fan and somebody from this area and we're just as the ball games on in the background. They just showed a picture of him and Cars, and I'm not even going to try to pronounce the last guy's name. But Isaiah Livers was also there. But this young guys, I mean this. This is the precedent sort of center, but the maturity My question, Rod. Is it out of line to maybe think that this team could make one of the playing teams at nine or 10 this year? I don't think it's out of line. I think you just need a lot of things to go your way. And really, this roster isn't even done. When you think about free agency and what Trey Weaver did last year. If he does a fraction of that, then we could see a lot of more more changes coming and new pieces coming in. But I agree with you. I think it really is his maturity. And I'm going to attributed to him being a young father and maybe just to his family itself that his dad who he emulates in a lot of things that he does is just, uh, taught him to be a blue collar guy, A hard working guy, and none of this stuff is guaranteed to you. So you got to go out and work for it and earn it And he feels like he gets that. And growing up in the Arlington area near Dallas. Um, I think he he just He understands it. He gets it. And we in Detroit know that blue collar work ethic in that that attitude, and he embodies that the same sort of way. Rod Beard from the Detroit News. Kindly joining us, and I might add. Also does a fantastic job doing Wayne State Broadcast Rod 34 days away from being at Tom Adams Field. Not that we're counting down. Count it down. Stone counted down love it like Oh, I can't wait. Hey, what have you heard about Isaiah livers? I think everybody knows his story and The foot surgery in all of that, originally was six months. Is there a timetable or anything like that? Well, from what I'm hearing, it looks like it might be September October somewhere in that time frame, which is right around the time that the J League season starts, maybe a little bit into that, But they want to make sure that he is completely healthy and give him a nice start to his career as well. And he may be a G league guy. He maybe somebody when when all the chips are down. He may be a guy that ends up on the Pistons uniform at some point this season and now, with the G League team playing on the campus of Wayne State University, they're going to have a better opportunity to have guys practice with the G League and play with the Pistons or play with the, UM The league and practice with the person's. That's a different opportunity and what they had previously where the team was in Grand Rapids, and you just couldn't do that. But livers. I think I'm excited about a little bit to see, um in a in a G league situation, if if that's where he ends up what he's able to do, and it's a name that people know it's going to sell some tickets just to do that. Um, but a young man who had his career cut short with injuries and everything else, much like a carousel. Avert that we've seen. What can they do when they make it to the league and they have an opportunity. Mhm. I want to ask you about, uh, you know, last year's national Player of the year from Iowa. Luka Garza, Um what do you What are your thoughts on him?.

"Like that's how dynamic of a guy people saw him to be so for detroit. The finally had this sort of superstar potential kind of guy to be honest with you. I don't watch a lot of college basketball. Just don't think it's very fun to watch. So i didn't get a chance to catch a lot of these guys in in that setting but i have watched a bunch of kale seed type. You know scouting videos on kate cunningham specifically and you know his own ball stuff his mastery of understanding. How the defense is positioned. When he turns the corner on picking rolls his ability to whip those cross court passes with either hand off the dribble on. That's what gets me excited in that. He already has a reliable jump. Shot to me is the troy not having even was even considered potentially this type of number one cat since grant hill. That's the one to me that makes the most sense because they've been so talent starved for so long kyle good. How good does kate have to be for detroit to be a playoff team next year. Pretty good i don't. I'm not sure. I mean they do have some pieces. That kind of i wanted to comment on the grant hill that i wanted to comment on the grant hill thing. He is an interesting. I've been thinking about that more lately. In that. like grant hill's like downhill creation was so amazing but back then with the shooting in the way the defensive rules where you didn't necessarily have to shoot it so it feels like kate is sort of an evolutionary answer to like what cade would be like today but in terms of their unit next year. I mean they have pieces. That i think plugged directly into him. But the you know the lovely thing about a player like cade is three level score He's got big honus. He likes the moment. I think he's a leader. I think he's to be able to help you rollers. I think he's going to hit the corners he can score any big. So i mean yeah. He's a floor raising player. He's he's not on the level of a harden and luca in terms of like an ofensive wiz but he is he has very few holes. Like we've heard mike schmitz eight.

"Deal. I told you about Kate Cunningham and here also, so you know, jail and green is going to the Rockets. Evan Mobili is going to the Cavs. Scotty Barnes is going to the Raptors. Jalen sucks from Gonzaga's going to the magic. But the big news of today the big basketball news, I would say. The fact that the Los Angeles Lakers secured Russell Westbrook From the Washington Wizards. And what did they give up? One of our callers prior to the break said they gave up dead weight. Kyle Kuzma. Kentavious Caldwell. Pope Mantras Harrell. They also gave up their 22nd pick. What did the Lakers get back Russell Westbrook. And you know there. The Lakers get a 2024 2nd round pick. They get a 2028 2nd round pick. Nobody cares about that. The fact is that right now the Los Angeles Lakers they have Westbrook. They have LeBron they have Anthony Davis. This is a perfect match. Is this a perfect pairing? If you missed us last hour, I kind of ran through this already. We know Westbrook isn't the greatest shooter. We know Anthony Davis Injury prone, But come on, You need talent if you want to compete. The Los Angeles Lakers. They entertained buddy healed and I thought that was good because they would be adding shooting, but ultimately adding Russell Westbrook to the Los Angeles Lakers for him to go home. Come on, You got another star. Do. I think he's going to walk in there? One of our prior callers a few minutes ago before we went to break. He's just like Russell Westbrook's his brand of basketball. Oh, it's not going to work. It's never worked. It hasn't worked anywhere. It hasn't worked with another star. Why would it work here with LeBron Now? This is not what I'm saying. I'm not guaranteeing a championship. We don't even know how the rest of this roster is going to round out. But what I will tell you is they have improved their odds of competing for a championship. Do they need shooting? Yes. But at the same time, Come on. Russell Westbrook is not stupid. LeBron is not dumb. Anthony Davis isn't stupid, And neither are the Lakers organization. They know that they need shooting. They know they need ancillary pieces to help round out this roster. They know this. But with what Russell Westbrook you bring in someone who doesn't take a playoff. He's going to up the intensity of the players around him. You can also spell LeBron James, who isn't going to feel that he needs to just handle the ball all the damn game. He got another killer with him. And regardless of how you feel about Russell Westbrook and I'm also someone who at the end of the game, I can't stand to watch this guy. Just shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot. But You can't take away from his intensity. His passion, his level of play. And part of this, maybe for Anthony Davis. We always hear LeBron James has to hype up Anthony Davis. He has to instill confidence in him, man. I think Anthony Davis, he should be able to feed off of playing with two guys who were just gonna go out there and get it. I love the trade. I think it's just a matter of how you round things out. You can look at the shooting as a detriment. You could say that they fall apart. That would be a detriment, but they have improved their odds and their chances of competing for a title. I'm going to get to your phone calls right now. 855 to 1 to four. CBS That's 855 to 12 for CBS. Russell Westbrook is now a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. He even shared a thank you to the city of D. C, how they embraced him in his season there. But now he's back home in L A. Is it going to work? Richard is calling from Atlanta rich you on CBS Sports radio. My brother from another mother. How are you? I'm terrific, Rich. What are you thinking? It had to listen to you this afternoon or no. Way with Andy Barker. Two. Great. Awesome. Thank you. Thank you. Also, like I said, I've been rich. It's a good move. It really is because number one, it gives him a second chance and plus LeBron, I don't have to do it all. Absolutely. But I don't have to do it all. I mean, you got somebody that can actually shoot. And that is not scared. And they always as young folks always say scare, not skirt. Well, I don't know if Russell Westbrook could shoot, I wouldn't. I wouldn't say that. I think he's actually for a guard. I called him a, uh, poor shooter. One thing he does know how to do is get to the basket, and I think that's I think they need to actually surround them. With shooters, and I don't think they're gonna you know, we got a lot of free agents, You know? Do I have the entire list in front of me right now? No, I do not. I mean, but it should not be difficult. To put talent around the squad that want to compete for the title. Rich. Thank you so much for calling up from Atlanta, 855 to 1 to four, CBS. Let's go to Tyler. He's here in Baltimore. Tyler you on CBS Sports Radio. Hey, Jr. How you doing tonight? Very good. What's up? I think the Lakers just got a great player to help. No, Everybody's talking about Russia's shooting, but Anybody any time they go to Isil LeBron or a day and that double comes Gruss if they use them right and cut to the basket, not like Oklahoma City did when teams with ice O k D. I think it's just going to be dirty. Okay. All right. Tyler likes to move. Thank you. Tyler for calling up from Baltimore. Let's check in with Ray from Houston, Texas, Ray you on CBS Sports Radio is Westbrook in Los Angeles with LeBron and a D. Is it going to work? No, sir, that that terrible movie The guy can't shoot threes. He's barely. He barely makes mid range shot. It's just It's a terrible move. If you want LeBron to, uh, win a championship, you gotta get somebody they can actually shoot them all. Uh, Westbrook. Had Yet. Um Yes. Great shooters here. Newsom with harden and everything. And he can't. He doesn't win. I mean, he can't win. You didn't win Oklahoma. Okay, um, and he had he had hard was a six man Oklahoma. Okay? Yes, He's a terrible shooter. Okay, Well, thank you, Ray. I would I would love to hear more. Just sounds like you're you're preoccupied. Don't know what you're doing. If you're in a truck or you move in boxes if you have me on speaker 100 yards away. He can't shoot. Okay. You think you can't shoot? I've seen him do other things to help teams win. I've seen him just this past season and I get it. I've made the same argument here. You know, I've talked about his style of play. And yes, it's exciting isn't necessarily conducive to winning yet know if you're going to look at him as a singular individual? Yes or no, but the fact is he's going to be joining. A team. He's going to be playing with LeBron. He's going to be playing with Anthony Davis. You can tell me about playing with Kevin Durant. You can tell me about, you know, playing what hardened you can tell me..

"I think people are over thinking this one a little bit personally. you know. it seems like every year the further you get from when the games were actually played the more you nitpick players in. Think of all the reasons why you shouldn't pick them right when it seems like like i said just yesterday that commingle was this guaranteed top five. Pick this two way versatile wing that every. Nba team wants and yet there are question marks about you. Know his style of play You know his decision making his shooting ability all that. But it's really hard to find six eight wings with that type of body that type of scoring ability a type of footwork that type of versatility on the high end you think maybe he becomes a jalen brown type of guy and you know if he's not that maybe he's a harrison. Barnes somebody who can play either forward spot Score the ball inside and out And defend a few positions so I do think that teams are nitpicking. Him a little bit. Because when when i hear like oh he may slide all the way to nine to me. That's that's crazy talk yet. I think coming is going to be a guy you see. If he does slide there are going to be teams. Who think are going to be aggressive. And maybe that's number nine with the kings and number ten with new orleans. And i think both those picks are very much in play new orleans. They're going to try to get certainly bledsoe's contract off and we'll see what they do at stephen adams traded for them. They signed him to an extension. We'll see how he fits in here. Is they put their team together for next year. But no one's just taking that blood so deal off your hands and so part of a deal that might include something they like coming back. You're attaching the tenth pick in. This is a draft when you have a draft is good and a lottery that strong that ten pick has more value than perhaps in in other years. I mean that's you can get a really good someone's gonna slide. Their teams are going to be. They're going to be dying to get that guy maybe debut on mitchell from baylor. Yeah i if. I was a contending team or someone who could take on salary and get up into the top ten. I would be doing backflips. If i could go get davey on mitchell like to me the idea that you know. He's another guy who's going much lower than than we had him Over the last few weeks is also i. It's shocking to me. And if if any part of that is because of one a workouts or what's been going on there like watch the film on this kid like did we not watch the. Ncaa tournament did not watch the national championship. Do not watch the big twelve tournament when this kid was guarding kate cunningham one possession and then you know breaking people off the dribble the next possession for pull up threes..

Short again is not fair to say chris. Paul the sons. Did your honest made well. We'll we'll get into it. "Each step to do that. Execute that plan. What would teammates say about him. A if he wasn't around sitting in a room. What would the teammates say about everyone. Everyone i've talked to you even after he's left as nothing but glowing say about him He breeze each and breathed basketball He's he's a good teammate. He loves he loves being around players and and and their families and and doing those kinds of things and And one thing is you never heard it last year. During the season you ever heard of after that. They never felt like cable selfish and took the spotlight from him. He always tried to make sure that else got the recognition. He would rather talk about his teammates and himself. A lot of times He's you know he would light up about bernard. Kuma who's you know a backup center that that didn't play much of the season playing more but he'd light up about talking about a guy like that or for guys away from the court You know or his family Talking about family love talking about family but you know about themselves like he. He always tried to make sure that he wasn't in the spotlight alone. Jacob unruly works for the oklahoma and covers oklahoma state sports for the oklahoma joins us. Here on the sean sows show k. Try to remove yourself from the geographical location in a year. There all the time watching him. I'm sure you saw mobely and suggs and green play this year. Maybe not green as much because aware he played not getting the game in person but especially in cova. Time is kate cunningham. The best player in this draft. I think so. I think. I think it's versatility set apart You know. I think you know mobely has damages. I haven't seen much shaven green light. He said I like jalen suggs and a lot of different ways. But i didn't see a player that impacted a team the way que did I think osu might have been a tournament team without cade. But i think he wrote to the next level Things just they hit some some bad shooting woes. When they got to any to indy and parts and You know they. They had a on the right pack. They could have made it. People run and it didn't work out but i think You know they. They ran to the finals. The big toe term and they got hot He made it seem better to wear os. You went into west. Virginia without him. And isaac likely their second best player and leader and one and That that to me was something that you didn't see from. Usc gonzaga stuff like that. They had a lot of power around those guys and cade Just elevated a program. That didn't expect okay jacob. I'm the rockets. And you're the pistons. What's it gonna take for me if i wanna trade up knowing what kate cunningham brings. What are you going to need from me to let me get into one hole. Man that stuff You know the rockets not knowing their situation entirely well like As the twenty third day. They've got the twenty third the twenty four thick. They got the second pick. And then there. There's talk about christian. Would and and eric gordon moving them some way somehow to be able to package a deal if they wanted to move up with detroit so just even if it's not houston just from anybody in the situation that has multiple assets. What are you asking for to part with kate cunningham. I think you've gotta have one top ten pick Maybe another one or two first round picks and a second rounder and then You're going to need obviously to throw a player to in there. It's going to you know i know. Gm but i mean you're going to have to really i think load them up with some picks in this year's draft to make up for the fact they're going to give up kate at that point Because i think kate is worth multiple draft picks at lease. What will we be saying about him in five years. You know. I think you're gonna call him an all star You know i think. I don't know that it went. Nba title and it depends on what team does around him to help but You know. I think you're gonna be calling him an all star in one of the stars in the league. I think that he's got the demeanor and the the ability to really kind of while people and dominate and he may do it quietly at first But i think he's going to develop to an all star in a leader all right. Kate cunningham were sitting with a buddy. And i'll end up with this and you've been awesome giving people some insight about a guy you covered on on seemed like on a daily basis kate cunningham. If we were sitting around he knew us well and we were sitting there and he trusted us and you asked him or i asked him. What's more important to you winning a championship or being the mvp and the league two times three times. What would he say if they win a championship. And you know that unequivocally yeah every every indication everything unknown known about him and his family is just about winning. Basketball games That's what he wants to do. And that's what he was You know nurtured to do basically you know his brother You know when. I wrote the story. His brother took over his. You know took him off as a ut mattress sophomore season and that summer and put him on his own team and just ran pick and roll over and over and over and over and over the point guard to convert converted into point guard. He went to mount bird and became the starting point junior without having having anything but summer. Experience playing point guard and just he finds areas approve on and make himself better but also makes the team better He was always keen. I it was never about himself. He you know he would get criticized sometimes for being too much of a team player and so i think i. I really believe that he would care more about winning thailand. He would be awesome stuff jacob. This is great stuff we appreciate you taking time and giving us some insight that well we think we know about him but other stuff that we're not around enough to find out and you gave us great insight and a great picture painted for us on. Why the rockets. Need to try to get kate cutting down we we we appreciate it. We'll do you may live man. We appreciate it. We'll do this again. Thanks for spending time with us today. Thanks for having me on all right. That's jacob unruly oklahoma and talking about cade cunningham from oklahoma state coming back. We'll discuss his comments quite a bit too like it's sports. "The country. This isn't the NFL. You can't really think about it in that case. And you also have to think about Kate Cunningham isn't necessarily Sion Williamson coming out, but he's still a star. He's still a guy. He's still a college story. Still a guy that can that can get people to little Caesars Arena actually watch him. You got to think about the gate part of this, too. And you want your guy? You want to make your pick. Take your guy when we cut a lot of stuff. When it comes to luck. You don't trade in a lotto ticket ain't no trade and the number one pick. You take your guy you move on, so I know that there's a bunch of rumors going around. I think it's only that you can get rumors going. If someone's willing to offer something stupid and fine, Of course, there's no no offer that no one's ever gonna listen to accept. If You were just going to get LeBron James all over again at number one. But if someone's willing to trade you something stupid for number one overall and fine, I guess you'd listen. But in terms of picks, no, you're not making that trip. Got to have your guy in there got to give Pistons fans something to get excited for. I assume it will be Kate Cunningham. I know some people have brought up. Well, you know Evan Mobley and Jalen Jaylin Green and Jalen Suggs. Jailed sucks, I think is going to be fine basketball player on or where I'm getting the number one stuff. I'm seeing the number one stuff from on that. You got your guy? Make your pick. Fill your seats up. Get going with that. On the thought of Janice. I don't mean to be a fatalist. If I were a box fan it be hard for me to breathe right now. I'd be nervous. One of my most nerve wracking days as a sports fan. June 19th 2016. I mean, the whole day I woke up couldn't breathe. Just robbed me of oxygen the entire day. I was that nervous for that game. In fact, I had dinner and I got sick because I was nervous from the dinner. Meaning got sick in a trash. Can. I was that nervous about the dinner. Haven't won in 52 years. You push it to a game seven. This is an historically great basketball team that you're playing here. If it doesn't work out Now, When is it ever going to work out? I remember we had had LeBron back. Was terrified going into that day, terrified for the possibility of the feelings that I would have the next day. This. This is even worse. You're down to in a series. Chris Paul. Great story for Devin Booker could be a really great story. We could make him one of the 1%. Someday He could be one of the best basketball players in the NBA. If he isn't already to some people part of that 1% that that is the face of the league. I hope so, because I'm not staying up late to watch these damn games for nothing. But for Milwaukee Would be terrified of our Roebuck's fan, because you know the conversation that happens right after this series. If you don't win this And you can sign as many contracts as you want. You can give as many statements as you want. There's always going to be something in the back of your mind that you don't want to think of, and you certainly don't want to hear. I'd hate it. It's another nail in the coffin of the N B. A The proverbial one. Obviously, I'd hate it, but it's something that we have. We would have to talk about. I did. I got duped. A couple of years ago they lost in the postseason. Maliki. Andrews had the article right out afterwards that hey, you honest is thinking about going? I'm like, man. Why are we putting this out there? Right then and there and somebody had to text me go. Hey, you know, that's Janice's people putting that out there, don't you? They're putting pressure on the organization. Now there's more pressure. There is not just pressure on the organization. I think the organization has done exactly what they're supposed to do now. You can try to give me Chris Middleton arguments. You can try to give me true holiday arguments. Okay, Well, I I still had those same arguments about you know who from 2003 to 2010. Still had those arguments. If you want to. But it looks more like he'd have to go instead of bring people there, and I think Chris Middleton's been fantastic in this post season. People rip him up and down. I don't think he's the problem. I don't think he's the problem at all. When that series started against Brooklyn and people ripping, I'm going Wait a minute. His other two Chris Middleton is doing the best he can through holidays, doing the best he can. They're not Kyrie Irving, and they're not James Harden. It's just pure and simple Fact. But we will find reasons to overreact to create the conversation. To have some sort of speculation on where he could end up. Going into next year if it doesn't work out this year, going into next season. Kyra's back. James Harden's back. Who knows what fashion week he's going to this week, but still he'll be back for next year. KD will be healthy again. LeBron will be healthy again. I can't see LeBron just falling off the face of the earth. Steph will have clay back. That's a tough road that is a tough, tough road..

"Covers the Pistons for the Detroit News. You get him on Twitter at D E T News Rod Beard. Hey, Rod, appreciate the time man, enjoy the enjoy the games throughout the rest of the playoffs and certainly looking forward to the draft and seeing with the well, I don't know There's a lot of drama at the very number one overall pick. But certainly if there's a trade, certainly looking forward to seeing what the Pistons do here over the next month or so, thanks. No, certainly he accused is going to be waiting with bated breath to. I appreciate it. Thanks. So, Yeah, no doubt about that. Yes, Absolutely. Rod. Appreciate it very much. Yeah, well, he he intrigued me. All of a sudden there with Detroit might want to trade and goes, you know, but you moved down for the number two pick And you maybe get Evan Mobile. I'm like, Okay, now he's got me thinking. And I know this is a national show. But I get selfish. Every now and then I start thinking about my own teams, the Houston Rockets and I'm thinking. Oh, okay. I had already kind of sold myself off a Kate Cunningham. And now what you're saying Rod is that there's an opening here. Where they might be amenable to You know the number two pick with a little sugar sprinkled on it. By a little sugar. I mean, probably multiple first round picks. I'm cool with being a two. I like Kate Cunningham as a player. I'm not wild about Kate Cunningham as a player like he's not. He's not a player that did I feel like I got to move up from two to go get him and gut future drafts to go do it. He disappeared a lot of times when I was watching him down the stretch. Watch the big 12 tournament and you know, and he was on an Oklahoma State team that knocked off Baylor. That was good in the tournament. Remember watching Oklahoma State in the tournament? I'm watching and And he wasn't really like separating himself from the pack in a lot of these games like a number one overall pick. Should he just I don't get this massively explosive transformational vibe off a Kate Cunningham. Good player. But I'm cool with being a two and then getting you know Evan Mobili or Jail and green. Like Jalen Suggs, too. I just don't like him as much as those other two guys. Would say you 855 to 1 to four CBS, if you if you want to get in on the program, 855212 4227 if you if you want to get in. We still got a lot to get to on the program. I I do need to play my smack off Call for you guys. I'll do that later this hour. I'll do that at the at the bottom of the hour. Um But up next I want to talk about some of the stuff the CIA has been been doing over the last week or so. This has been for late June, an underrated Lee kind of pivotal time. For college sports, including the CIA. It looks like just kind of throwing up the white flag on a an open pasture of income that should have been there for players. Long, long time ago. So we'll talk about that. If you want to grab a line would love to hear from you 855 to 12 for CBS 855.

"Chris is going to do the honors will give us the news items of the day and I'll give my one thought in each and every your item. Let's go right now on ESPN radio. I've been wanting to do this for a while. Freddie Coleman. I could I could see the smile on your face getting a chance to do this. So, Yeah. Good luck to you. I finally get the introduction. Freddie Coleman. MLB is starting their inspections for foreign substances. Some pictures are just not that enthusiastic about it. Especially Max Scherzer, who looked like Jack Nicholson in the Shining. Well done. Give me your one thought on all of this on the pitcher's being upset on the Inspections, all of it. One thought is no one should be surprised because Your boy. Freddie Coleman warned you about this. When this came down that this is what Major league baseball was going to do. I warned you with all that is good. And Holy Because Major league Baseball is going to be so reactionary and knee jerk reactionary to what happened with the Houston Astros, being involved in trash can gain and video game and so many people upset that Major league baseball sensing that the players off the hook Other guys lost their jobs being managers or former managers. But the players didn't lose any World Series share. They didn't lose any chance to have the title vacated. So of course, no one should be surprised. That no one is thrilled about this. The hitters aren't thrilled about it. The fans aren't thrilled about it. And tonight Max Scherzer three times, Georgia Roddy, the opposing manager, the Philadelphia Phillies. Had him checked for any kind of spied attack or a legal substance. And then Max serves at the striking out real mortal. I thought he was going to buzz the tower in the dugout when it comes to George Girardi. So that's my one thought. Nobody should be surprised about this Major league based by the chance to really do the right thing, and instead they did the dumb thing like they normally do. Move on to the NBA. Not tonight's playoff action, but the NBA lottery was tonight. I learned about that about 10 minutes beforehand and the Detroit Pistons one. So Freddie give me her one thought on the Pistons winning Most likely decayed Cunningham sweepstakes. If you're getting a guy Kate Cunningham, because right now believe he is the best player in this draft. Then he has that kind of presence and personality, even though he's a quiet assassin. He's the perfect guy to lead in Detroit. Detroit basketball team that had two guys make the all rookie team Sadiq bad thing is going to be a terrific player for this basketball team. That's gonna be a nice combination K. Cunningham and him taking into the future when it comes to the Detroit Pistons. So that was the one thing lost about tonight's action, especially the reaction of the Sun's winning Game two of the Los Angeles Clippers. The NBA draft lottery happened any team later Detroit Pistons Where one time you can be in Eastern Conference and be below the surface and then you can jump right up. And the next thing you know all of a sudden you in playoff contention, So my one thought is I'm not going to say it's a new day dawning. When it comes to the Detroit Pistons, But getting Kate Cunningham to go to Galax, Sadiq banker, maybe all rookie team after this season. Those are two nice pill is to have To make sure that Detroit basketball does not get laughed at any more. Great for Detroit. Also, the Warriors have to top 10 picks could be a little bit of trade beat. But to the NHL. Ready. The Montreal Canadians are a win away from the Stanley Cup. They were a basically 500 team all year. They finished with the negative point differential and the 18th most points. So, Freddie, give me your one thought on the Canadians, possibly being a win away in the Stanley Cup final. It's another reason what they've been able to do by the standard cop playoff run is the best playoff run in sports, and that's not sliding the NFL because I love the NFL playoffs. I love the fact that Kaswell playoffs He finally came to his senses. Not so long ago, the NBA playoffs have been terrific. So far for the Stanley Cup playoffs. You could be fair to Midland in the regular season. But then you get a hot goalie all of a sudden the pressures on the other team above you in the standings that they got to take care of you and they're not able to do it. The Vegas Golden Knights tied for the most points. Scored in the NHL regular season and much you all tonight was able to put it on them when it seemed like Vegas to control this series by winning Game four in Montreal, Sports are usually better. When the names that you know are doing well. Hockey is always better when the Montreal Canadians are in contention, and we have not been able to say that about the Canadians for more than a minute. And now they're a game away from a Stanley Cup final and four game five games away from raising Lord Stanley's Cup above their head. It goes to show in the Stanley Cup playoffs. You may have been in the regular season. But in the playoffs, everybody starts at zero. No more is that personified than the drive for Lord Stanley's Cup and the much All Canadians are proven epitome when it comes to that. Let's see if we can squeeze in two more first, Carl Nassib Fitzsimmons on ESPN Radio. Of course, we came with Chris and Freddie Coleman. Let's start with that. Carl Nassib. He made big news the other day coming out. He's the first openly gay NFL player and today fanatics, the giant jersey conglomerate announced in the past 48 hours. He is the top selling jersey in the NFL. Give me one thought on that, Freddie. My one thought is.

"Kevin what? You're with you alongside ESPN, PJ Carlesimo. So as we kind of go through this together, PJ Carlesimo, the notables. Toronto has jumped up to the top four. Cleveland has jumped up to the top four. That also leaves Houston. In Detroit as your top four teams. That will be so the top two who had the best percentage chances at 14%, But joining them will be Toronto or Cleveland as we go through this Golden State will be picking 14th Golden State will also be picking in the number seven position they make. They get Minnesota's pick. Wow. Very fortunate. Houston. They don't drop. They could have dropped out of it all if they dropped to five that beat all the way down to 18 so great news for Houston, and you better believe Cleveland and Toronto are loving the way it's going Well. Remember this. The Toronto Raptors PJ, They have the chance they may not have Kyle Lowry come to Soft season. He's a free agent. Many were wondering at the trade deadline. Would he get moved? So this is a chance for the Toronto Raptors. If you do lose him, or hey, Kyle. Maybe we get number one. Maybe we get Kate Cunningham and let's also kind of go through PJ some of the top prospect. You mentioned Kate cutting him Also, How about Jalen Solid? There's a lot of good players out there. There's no question and Kate Cunningham just staying with him for a second he can play. He doesn't have to be the point Guard immediately. He can He play with Kyle Lowry. Of course he can play with Kyle Lowry. He also brings some size to that backboard, Freddie Bensley. It's a very small backcourt. So, uh, he'll fit in. We'll see what happens again. Houston, Detroit Toronto in Cleveland again, most likely all vying for the chance.
Why USC's Evan Mobley Is the Best Big in the 2021 Draft
"For the next two months in advance of the two thousand twenty one nba draft that is scheduled for july twenty nine. We're going to be dedicating an episode of beyond college basketball. Podcast to notable prospect. Same way we did in advance of last year's nba draft. We started this series last week with a twenty two minute profile of kate cunningham. If you missed it and you're interested don't find it today. We will turn our attention to another prospect who seems like lot to go in the top five of the two thousand twenty one nba draft. His name is evan mobile. he's a seven foot center. Who averaged sixteen point four points. Eight point seven rebounds. Two point nine blocks in two point four assists in thirty three point nine minutes per game in his one season at usc shop fifty seven point eight percent from the field. He was the pac twelve player of the year freshman of the year and pac twelve defensive player of the year. He was a consensus second team. All american who led usc to the elite eight of the ncaa tournament. Most mock drafts have him second or third in this. Two thousand twenty one. nba draft. So let's start with this dead leg. Is evan mobely to you clearly. Unquestionably the best big in this rat. Yes i think. That is unquestionable. We agree. I mean at this point. How about this. How about this for a quick complica- compare him to a recent big one. He played against and was good against james wiseman to me mobilize more versatile player with the higher upside and a year ago in a weaker draft. Class what's interesting is wise men went second moby might wind up going second or third we mentioned in the previous partly sided. I don't think he's going to go. I in this draft because of centers. And how they're viewed and how their role is changing By the year but it is interesting like if you put mobile wiseman even knowing what wise. Men's out like a year ago i would have said the same thing i think i would still take mobely over wise men coming out of college and we agree on the sofa. If we agree there yes mobis got to be the best big available in this

"Are you, Kurt? I'm doing good. Thanks for having me out. Just know my pleasure. Thank you. Before we get to today's four games and maybe a peek into tomorrow's four games and just a general overview First things first, the en bas playing around Had mixed emotions about it when it was announced when they made it formal. They had it last year in the bubble, which I understood what they were attempting do made sense was okay with it expanding this year Now 10 teams kind of in the playoffs. All though they've been pretty outspoken about that's not playoffs. It's playing. There's a difference between playoffs and playing. I talked. It was watering down the postseason and Kind of taking a little starch out of regular seasons. Well, but I'm not sure that it didn't work. Did the N BA get what they wanted out of the playing around? A spur your opinion. They absolutely did A I mean, the game's got good ratings and there, you know, there was some real drama there and Well, maybe not the Charlotte game. The other games like obviously the Lakers Warriors game, but frankly, even let you know, but the Memphis winning, there were dramatic games. They got good ratings and what's more important what the real league really wanted more than Those games and some extra TV, you know revenue for their TV partners. Jody after the All Star break every year. It's just the most NBA games weren't that interesting? Right? Like the seedings were kind of said, and maybe people be jostling around a little bit. There were still a lot of empty games. And the focus would often become about who's tanking and who's going for, you know. Who's going after Kate Cunningham, who is going to go, You know that end of it. Not this year. Like they're obviously teams that were tanking in Houston and Oklahoma City. And what have you but The focus was on Who's going to get that in Washington come back and get the Tennessee native Can they make it in the playoffs and you? Can the Lakers avoid the play in and get to this? All that conversation was what the league wanted. It was about names that matter. They've made games matter at the end of the season. They're very happy with it, and I would It may get tweets slightly, but I would be shocked if you don't see it back on a pretty permanent basis on but I didn't see it coming and I have to admit that I was wrong. I do think all those things you just stated were accurate and added to the end of the season, so I will give them credit in port side for set it up the way that they did. But you mentioned tanking and you're right. There were less teams tanking and the outrage against it was certainly less than itwas. But the other part of that is remember they flattened lottery odds a couple years ago. So If you have the worst record or the third worst record and force works record, you pretty much have the same odds of winning the thing. So that also took some of the Race of the bottom incentive off, right like you. If you're gonna tank you wanna be bad, but you don't have to be You know you don't have to go. You know, full full six years on this thing, embarrassingly bet, But here's what I do Want to ask you about? Don't know if you would call tanking but strategic Player management team like the Clippers coming down the stretch could have played for the three seed. They basically said no, Thank you. Denver here you can have this will take the poor seed instead Sitting Kawai and Paul George with two games to go. Um, I don't know if that had any motivation for the Mavericks today, but it's Joyce how looked like it. That is the one thing But I guess you could do that before before they ever went to play in games that the Clippers make a major mistake by not giving it their full effort until the last game of the season. Mm. Well, I mean, I guess, yes, in the sense that I don't know that it would have been that easier. If they'd gotten the three seed then they would have gotten Portland and Portland just one and looked really good tonight. I don't defend terribly well. But they, you know they wouldn't have been a cakewalk. Either way, there's gonna There's no easy out in the West. You know, there's there's no soft games in Or anybody, including Utah against Memphis, like you're the 18 isn't Utah win, but it's It's not gonna be that easy. Um Their strategic plan was a, you know, keep the Lakers on the other side of the bracket and B They believe they match up really well with Utah, which, frankly, they kind of match really well with Utah. They That's a good matchup for them. In terms of they don't know. They shoot a lot of threes. They they. Utah doesn't really have wings. Defenders lay voice O'Neill, but they don't have guys who could guard quiet and Paul George. You just got to get there first. And Luca was fantastic. Today, the Clippers didn't hit their threes and I would say that that's a serious that's a serious now. I still think that that was a little bit of a one off for the Clippers, but I think that's a that's a coin toss of the Syriza. This point you get the first one on the road. All of a sudden you've done away with home court advantage. You've got to give yourself a chance. And I will say that about the Mavericks and the reason why specifically like the maverick win tonight was Yes, Luca was Luca for the first three quarters and he was phenomenal and had 30 points with three minutes to go. In the third quarter. He ended up with 31. They did force the ball out of his hands late in his teammates stepped up and made huge plays for him. That's a good sign if you're a maverick fan That's the best part of this If you're a maverick san, right, is that it? Cindy Smith. Everybody else like everybody else played really well in the fourth quarter when the Clippers dialed it up and said, we're gonna We're going to take away the thing that you know you're not going to beat us with your star, which is what happens in the playoffs, right? That is part of what makes Look, LeBron is going to get his and Durant's going to get his butt when you get Against a good playoff team. Make it like the Clippers. They could make that really difficult. And you got your second guy is gonna have to step up. Your third best guy is gonna have to step up. They absolutely did that for Dallas right now. And like you said that that makes you feel confident and that gives that team confidence now. Hey, we could do that again. We could do that. As many times as we need to. So that's a and I don't know that part, you know, coursing guesses in there, and I think he can have a better game. So Like I said, if I'm Dallas right now, I'm very confident about About our chances. Like you said. They've got home court now and Right, You're you're suddenly look, that was a look that made big plays last year, and he's going to make some again this year and the Clippers. It just felt like their whole regular season, right where they're just way got it. We'll get there..

Because i can no longer make fun to them by calling them the orlando inertia because they traded everyone and they are going to be so bad when they next play which could be tonight. I don't even know else playing tonight that they are obviously positioning themselves. To go full rebuild. Bow and get a shot at kate cunningham. Whoever's next seat next year skate cunningham their biggest deal let's start with butchnevich to chicago for twenty twenty one. I at twenty twenty three. I and wendell carter junior and otto porter. What were your thoughts on that. Because i didn't think i was gonna get traded. And i thought if he did the price would be even higher than this and i was skeptical that anyone would offer them that kind of pressure i did. I didn't think a deal what happened. What do you think about this from either either perspective. I don't care which one to start with. Yeah i mean. I think for I thought it was going to be three ones. If you're going to get in the game for a reverse first rounder. Three first rounders. I thought that's what it was. And i guess if you're landau i guess you're quite that the wendel carter junior the pickup equates to a first round although he's got two years you know he's going into an extension year so it's not like you get clean slate with him.

2021 NBA Draft Big Board
"Time to do some updates on the big board and like i said before these big boards are based off a consensus at the end of the day between nba scouts. General managers. that. I'm talking to right now about where they have. These guys ranked them not ranking them. According to team needs this is not a mock draft and for the most part those nba scouts and general managers win the day. If i disagree with them but everybody has a guy higher than me then. He goes higher If there's a tie sometimes then you know. I may come in and put my finger on the scales but what i'm trying to do here is report. What i think is the general consensus from nba teams. And i want to start with the top five because these top five right now. I will do my tears column towards the end of the draft right before the draft happens usually about a week or two before the draft. But if i were to do it today i would say that. There's as many as five guys who are looking like tier one guys if you remember from last draft when i did my tears column. I personally didn't have any guys in tier one talking to nba teams and be scouts. While there was guys that got votes for tier one. Like lamelo ball. Anthony edwards james wiseman ultimately none of them got the fifty percent threshold to move into tier one. If i if i were betting man right now and for that particular survey to a pretty wide swath of nba teams and general managers and scouts. I'm thinking that there might be as many as five tier one prospects in this draft right now. So we'll start at the top. He was number one a big board. One point oh he stays number one here in big bore two point okayed cunningham. The point forward freshman out of oklahoma state. Who who's been really everything that he was advertised to be as the one of the most complete players in the draft who plays one of the most important positions in the draft wing. He's averaging eighteen points a game six rebounds a game nearly four assists the game one and a half steals a game. He shooting thirty nine percent from three. Which i think was definitely one of the swing skills for kate cunningham. That teams had coming in. How well of an outside shooter is he going to be and so far. The numbers look really good on that end. If there's an issue with kate cunningham right now and i think it's an interesting one. It's that he has not been a particularly careful with the ball. He's averaging three and a half turnovers a game which is which is pretty high and he has a lot in this oklahoma state offense. They rely heavily on him which means at times. He's forcing things. But that's the one red flag. If i'm looking at you know just sort of overall the numbers and what's going on where the red flag might be. It's that again. Three point five turnovers jumps to about three point eight in this per thirty six. And that's the one that i would that i would be careful about watching because his reputation coming in was that this is one of the steadiest playmakers that you're going to find his ability to see the game to be afford leader very high and that assist to turnover ratio is really the only major war that i can really see on statistical profile right now and again. I think you have to caveat that some by the fact that you look at the team that he's playing on and how teams can really game plan for him every night that there are reasons why i think that cunningham might not have the highest assist to turnover ratio at least one that we would expect.

I don't see where anyone loses in the current situation. Now like on principle, you just asked me on principle like if if I was writing rules of what I think is right. I think they should have the right to go to the NBA, however collectively bargained that they can't. I see no problem with that, either because that's how the industry works collective bargaining. But I mean there's just so much to it. Especially in regards to a Mani just to bring it back to that for a second like. You know. Is he going to move up to twenty twenty? What's interesting is going to be how Michigan state recruits around him. Right 'cause. The words how he really feels well. His Dad and his commitment helped Michigan state build some dream recruiting class much like Oklahoma state did around Kate Cunningham granted no one at at his level, but they've done very very well. And Kate ultimately showed up. Obviously it helps. His brother was on staff. You know or will it actually be a detriment where no one actually believes? He's coming, but they have to save a spot for him over the next two years. In case he does decide to come and play and it actually ends up being a detriment to them because everyone knows at the end of the day. "College basketball powers. Oklahoma state has a nice history but it's not a blood program. It's not even a top twenty program and you could have you will have mobile at u._s._c. and you should and could have a cunningham in oklahoma state. I find that to be a fascinating divergence from what we see in recent years but if you for whatever reason had kate cunningham ultimately deciding to play somewhere else in college within oak state. I feel like that would be unprecedented. I can't say this with one hundred percent certain fact but i don't think that college basketball at the power conference level has ever had a blood relative of a top twenty five recruit behind to a program and then that recruit not go play at that program. I think that that's never happened before. If it is you can perform your listeners will but it <hes> no one's expecting that to happen in our just all looking at our watches waiting for kate cunningham cunningham and if and when that happens potentially price thompson and if oklahoma state does gets both of those guys their expectations will be as high as they've been in a very long time at the start part of the twenty two thousand twenty twenty one season the only thing i can think of an that might qualify is george brooks at mississippi state now now. I don't think he was hired just to get his son but his son turned into an elite prospect and is now at north carolina like with north carolina right right when we were just talking about this a couple of weeks ago you right yeah which by the way i would fire george brooks. If i've been having like you're at assistant coach part of your job is to recruit if you cannot recruit your son. You're not good at it. That's wild. I mean that would've fired spot like i. I guess credit to ban. He'd better i i am i cannot i want your son. You can't deliver your son. You can't work for me that me that suggests that if you can't recruit create your own son what how are you going to recruit another top twenty five player in america. We're done here and i'd say the same thing too. Do i keep saying cake cutting his brother. What's his name mccan. Worry cannon yeah. Can i tell you the same thing like i have an i have another top fifty player in the country who is on record publicly stating that he'll probably come with us if kate cunningham is committed to us. We need your brother committed right now. It will help us get this other player and suddenly we've got a top tim recruiting class in america like what are we doing here and if you you point out might not play college basketball or might go somewhere else fired within seconds fired within seconds and i would be and and i feel like i feel like i'm in oklahoma state alum right now. The cutting un's up. My guns are up but but i just it's it's crazy to me like we can. We it is an actual advantage to have somebody like kate cunningham. I'm committed as early as possible. Yeah you the brothers on staff obviously to deliver k. cunningham and he cusses list of five in the early august. What cut your list of one and go and go get go. Get another top fifty player. Come with you. I'm texting my point right now. I need to tidy to guide him on this like yo man the whole cut your list of fis. This is unacceptable acceptable behavior is he is mad about it as i. I don't think he is actually there's a there's a quiet confidence there i think i i don't think anyone's just mad about this as you are but that's that's okay it's august and and this is one of the prominent storylines in college basketball unfolds but you're not wrong and if anything this conversation's reminded me of just how badly i wish even if i could peer into an alternate universe i'd love to see gary parrish rush division one men's college basketball coach first of all. You'd be fired within a year..
"kate cunningham" Discussed on CBS Sports Eye On College Basketball Podcast
"Oklahoma state 'cause also by the way the backstory with all of this is that when mike boynton left stephen f. austin as an assistant to go with brad underwood to be at oklahoma state he discovered cape cunningham by accident the very like they get the job the end of march three years ago the first. I live period point and goes to some event. He's going to look at another player. He sees kate cunningham. He thinks kate cunningham because of his look is built his style. He thinks he's going to be a senior and goes and asks. Hey listen you know. I'm sure there's a lot of people recruiting them but i'd love to get involved or interested in and then i guess it must have been cades grassroots coach. I can't remember he goes. Oh no. He's a freshman in high school and it's like what so he's been on cunningham. The longest game i offer and also oklahoma state gave thompson. It's i offer from a major conference. Program tulsa was an earlier than them so he's been recruiting. Both of these really really good players for a really long time. I don't don't know why taking cunningham so long. I was told you know this isn't likely but maybe for just to play the field a little bit. There's maybe a slight. I chance that kate cunningham decides not to play college and maybe that's why he has not committed yet because he just wants to kick that can a little bit down more down the road before he makes except decision or not but in terms of the college stuffy i mean you talk to coaches. You talked to recruiting guys do this. It's just kind of like what are we waiting on here. I mean i'll tell you what parrish if kate cunningham winds up not playing in oklahoma state which in big picture we've got an fascinating twenty twenty situation you got the top prospects with family members at nontraditional college basketball powers. Oklahoma state has a nice history but it's not a blood program. It's not even a top twenty program and you could have you will have mobile at u._s._c. and you should and could have a cunningham in oklahoma state..
