Capitals' playoff hopes take another hit with loss to Blues

"The capitals playoff hopes took a hit with a 5 two loss to the blues. Sammy blay scored twice and Joel hofer made 33 saves in his season debut. I was obviously a lot of uncertainties with being in being the a all year and first game in a long time, but I thought the guys put really well in front of me and kind of kept in the outside and like I said earlier, super nice to get the one. Kasperi kapanen and Jordan Cairo also tallied and Braden Shen edited an empty netter. Martin Ferrer vari and Nicholas Baxter had the third period goals for the capitals who are 5 points out of an Eastern Conference playoff birth with 12 games remaining. I'm Dave ferry.

"Your team and we don't even know the GM of the team will be or what direction they'll be going. It feels like the Matthews nylander ROR axis sort of determines what Toronto is going to do going forward this summer anyway. And I feel like this is sort of a step to get in front of it by getting a guy to help you considering it looks like you're pretty set down the middle and maybe are going to need some dynamic contributors on the wing going forward. I didn't even mention but bunting is also throw bunting in there too who's actually a UFA. Right. I just assumed that if O'Reilly does stick around, it'll be at a massive hometown discount and it won't necessarily force their issue. Or force their hand on any sort of financial decisions. Jack my initial take from this first off, before Tom, you hopped into the green room and we started recording. Jack was like, I don't have any like Luke Shen or Canucks trades because I'm sure Tom is going to come through with those. So right on brand, you deliver right out of the gate. You demon make us wait for it. But I think my initial take is, I think Shannon for like a third is perfectly reasonable. I am on the high end of my homelander evaluations, and so I don't like it from that perspective. I understand the glut of wing. I just think that he, I would like to see a longer runway of him playing with top players to see what I have as opposed to trying to cash on her right now. So I wouldn't be trading homelander at the moment, especially for pontius holberg, but I like the, I like the idea and I kind of wear your heads out in terms of the big picture I'm looking forward in terms of like team needs. Holmberg's actually good though, right? Yeah, I don't know, he's easy. He's getting fine, but I really like all that. I think me too. He has a chance to be really, really good. I agree. I understand it's been frustrating that he took such a big step back after that really promising rookie season, but development isn't always linear. Jack, what are your takes on that trade? Yeah, admittedly, my first thought was, oh jeez, I'll blinders available that cheap. Penguins off for pick and prospect to get nil so glad to replace kasperi kapanen. Again, I don't really know the temperature and Canucks land around I'll gland it. I would hope that the Canucks would be able to get a return like a third and holmberg or maybe someone only slightly worse than hallberg for Luke Shen based on how we know that defense with the rental market works. Again, my instinct is to be side with dim here that that seems a little low value for homelander, but again, the temperature in the market is obviously going to be different from me, especially as somebody with that pain was bad background, where I hear young winger available and my brain immediately just goes to dumping pics and prospects to get them.

"Yeah, I will say that I think there's a distinction to be made between skating ability and then actually being able to leverage it into functional usage over the course of a hockey game, right? I think when I first started doing this and I don't know how to prospect evaluator, but I'd watch young players play the NHL level. And I'd get mesmerized by just pure skating ability in terms of point a to point B, watch how fast this guy can get up the ice and I'd be like, wow, with this type of game breaking speed, anything is possible. And then you watch more episodes of that player and you realize, all right, that's kind of only the only gear they have and while it can certainly be effective in doses, ultimately unless you're able to sort of change speeds down unless you're able to pick your spots and be able to use it in ways to actually get open or get areas on the ice. There are very few instances over the course of an especially in NHL game, which is very structured, even though there are more rush opportunities these days, where you can just straight up go from your end of the ice to the other end of that is a top speed, right? Like a number of times you could actually do that in a fast break setting, so to speak is a very limited. So I remember you watch like an address authenticity or you watch a kasperi kapanen and I remember in the early days I'd be like, wow, I'm all in on these players because they could do anything out there and then you watch them and you're like actually what they could do is pretty limited in that regard. Yeah, absolutely. The change of pace game is so, so, so important, being able to delay at the right moments, just enough to kind of bait the poke check and then turn on the jets. It's all, you know, players can be high end skaters, but they're functional speed can be quite low.

"But since that 7 game losing streak, they are ten two and two over their last 14 games, fourth in all situations expected goals for percentage basically in those 14 games. They're fourth. They have super good offensive numbers. They have like solid but not great defensive numbers. And a lot of this winning, honestly, looks like the puck started going in the net when I'm getting involved in this on the ice. It's never been a problem with Crosby, malkin has been putting up similar underlying numbers all season, but the puck just was kind of like staying out and not going in. And then malkin started scoring or malkin flying or whatever. And you see what happens. They're like a 60% expected goals team. If you want to see regression happen in real time, kasperi kapanen's hat trick, the other night. It was like the living embodiment of that. The three goals he scored were all, it must have been the easiest hat trick ever recorded in the NHL based on what the player actually did. All three of them were him just kind of standing around the net and then Malcolm making a player or something and him just like Tapping it in or wanted them even bounced off of him and he didn't even intentionally tap it in. And he just got three goals. It's like the hats are flying on the ice and kudos to him, but it's like, wow, this is an amazing collecting them and handing them to Guinea malkin. Thank you, sir. Yes. Classic. Okay, the Tampa Bay lightning. Here's my question for you. Okay, what's going on with the Victor headman? Yeah, it's crazy, right? The numbers are awful. His defensive metrics are like her stunningly hideous. Yeah. Now remember a couple of years ago when I believe he won the Norris and he had spent a good chunk of the season going, I'm playing horribly. Yeah. I wonder if this is him being like, well, I can just play bad. They'll give me the Norris trophy at the end of the year. Well, two years ago, I played the wedding of referencing. I think that was the year Adam Fox won. He was a finalist though for sure. Yes. You're right, yeah, yeah, yeah.

"The penguins scored twice in the third period to hand the golden knights just their second regulation loss in 13 road games this season. Four to three. Jake ensel and kasperi kapanen tallied one 52 apart to give the pens a victory in their first game since defenseman Chris la Tang suffered a stroke on Monday. Genzel tied it 7 33 into the final period, kapanen gave Pittsburgh, its first lead of the night. The last game I played before. You know, I got healthy and I missed that wide open that. It was time to just get feeling put in. Brock mcginn and Ricardo Raquel also scored for the penguins. Jack eichel had a goal and an assist for Vegas. I'm Dave ferry.

"Could they? And so the ones that I still think the rangers are going to be pretty good because I think the team they'll have pass March 3rd is not the team they have right now. You know, like I applied 1900 right now. Yeah, I think they'll change a bit. I'm just looking for teams down in that mid range and that's really I don't think we talked about St. Louis as the door closed, like I mean, if you're just going to put some cake down. St. Louis, the penguins can't be as bad as those 7 games in a world that they lost. Right. How about kasperi kapanen and a healthy scratch? I know. You know, they got another year at 3.2. This year plus next year. They signed him in the off season, which kind of surprised me, but I mean, he is a healthy scratch, and they've started to win a couple of games. All right, Chris Albert, hopefully we'll reconnect with us on Thursday. And we got to start looking at the World Cup too. I mean, we're getting right up the first kick here. Oh, that's true. Okay, well, we'll get abs thinking about that. Every time he visits, brought to you by baton, check him out, patano dot C 8. That game starts now. All right, ask gray and Greg's anything as we get set to land the plane, you know, land the plane. Please. God. Guys. You can send this to your questions at Twitter, Instagram, at Rand Riggs, or on the website, Rand Riggs dot com. We've got an international question. And this must come from the number of conversations we've had on The Rain rigs podcast. About the coach's challenge, you know? And we have our differing opinions on what might be a better idea, you know? I mean, again, most recently we had the Trevor zebra school call back 29 seconds after the ducks had entered the zone off. Way too long. So Benny from our website rate and I think Raheem yeah, Raheem is phonetically spelled. The pronunciation is there. Benny's strong is a listener from Jan, Sweden. Cool. Awesome. So yeah, Benny, welcome to the podcast. Benny gets the shout out for joining the brain Drake's pocket. He says, how about decriminalizing the offside rule? That's a word that isn't used often enough on hockey podcasts. The criminalizing the offside rule. Everything the same. If you want to review, it will be a question of did it affect the play or not. Not this stuff about millimeters. I don't mind it. I don't mind if Benny, however, more opinion is always a bad idea. I had I'm not going to say because I don't know if the ex official wants me to say his name, but I had a X official reach out and say and give me his idea, which I think one I had never thought of it. I never heard of it. And I'm like, wow, this thing actually makes sense. He said, what if there was a thin line 18 inches or two feet inside the zone?

"I'm just wondering how much I can say about this, but no one listens to the show. I think you're fine. Differences in we've seen coaching differences may pay a make a media changes in zone exit schemes. Of course. Exiting up the middle as opposed to going up a wall. I think, well, even certain coaches can change that system as well. I remember when Mike Sullivan first became the coach for the penguins. They played a very trans call at punt and hunt. And they were just sending the puck in the neutral zone and using their speed to get onto it. And now that most of their guys are not what I would call fast. A little longer in the tooth. They're a lot more, I find they're a lot more methodical in their breakout. And I think despite not winning cups anymore. I think that there are, I think that they're a better team. It feels like there are more formidable opponent. Well, tougher to stop. And this is why I do believe that I think there's a lot of coaches in today's game that are interchangeable for the most part in terms of I don't think they're very meaningfully changing their team's results for better or for worse. None of the ones that listen to this show though, right? Well, you know, let's just point out that Jared Ben R and John Cooper, both follow me on Twitter and on a day out of their fair, for a bit of success this season, so just putting that out there. I do think that Mike Sullivan, that's a great example, because I remember the year he came in and took over. They had really bad results at the start of the year. And I went back and watched all those games at the time. And it was remarkable how limiting their strategy was. It was basically like, every time anything could happen, it was because Sidney Crosby and afghani malkin went as far back in their defensive zone as they could, got the puck, lugged it up the ice, made a couple people miss and eventually got it for a scoring chance to a teammate. And it's like, those guys are great players, but having that being your barrier to a successful shift is really hard to sustain over the course of a game over the course of a season. And then Mike Sullivan came in and you're right, he was basically like, all right, we're just going to play really fast by just going and getting the puck as opposed to having our star players have to do it the full 200 feet basically. And that changed things dramatically for them as we know. And so I love that kind of strategic component of a coach coming in and recognizing the personnel he has because look at the success their defensemen have had in terms of the names they've had and they brought in. We were talking about this recently with Mike Mathis and after he got traded for Jeff petry. And he was actually far better in Pittsburgh than I thought he was going to be based on watching him in Florida. And I'm very curious to see what he looks like next year in Montreal because he clearly has the physical skill set. But he was also coming from a place that is like catered to making defensemen look good by making their think of it as a quarterback. They were like, they're like rouche in terms of the things they have to do is so minimal offensively. And that was used as a negative against John Moreno when he got traded as well because people were like, oh, he's kind of stagnated. Like he hasn't really developed offensively the way we thought. It's like, well, most of their advancement other than Latin have a very minimal checklist of things they need to do and they wind up being better for it. Yeah. And I think this is a situation where I don't have the data to show this, but where we're having tracks both players, I prefer Marino to Matheson. I think that I think he's just able to do a lot more with the puck when he's under pressure. I feel like he makes a calm or play, you know, but you're right. It's very difficult because a lot of these are system effects. And I've seen, you know, and a lot of my judgment is clouded by seeing mathison just wanting to puck up and rim it around in Florida for a whole bunch of games. Yeah, he played differently than that, especially in the playoffs last year. When he went out, he was playing top airing with latte and look quite good in that role. And he's a beautiful skater. I do think I like Marino more as a player just because I think that the things that he does defensively are much tougher to find. And so I thought that was a great get for New Jersey. But yeah, I certainly think knowing your personnel and then being able to play a system or a style that gets the most out of them it makes sense for those players is really valuable, which is why you can't be so rigorous as a coach because your team might change dramatically. If you switch teams or in an off season where all of a sudden you have a lot of turnover. And so if you're just like, all right, everyone needs to play a certain way that might work for you one year. But if that's all you got, it's going to be tough to have sustained success. Another good example of that would be a defenseman that you've talked up about Cody. An Ottawa. I think just the way that they kind of, are you taking a Cody CC victory lap right now? Well, I wasn't with the oily last year, so no. That's true. But CC and Ottawa, I think just the way that the Sens played, where they really activate the left defense, kind of let their right defender hang back. I don't know if that was a system that really worked for Cody ceci, who was like too oftentimes stuck kind of defending miniature two on ones and three on twos just based on how aggressive they were on the other side of the ice. Yeah. So, and I think it would be interesting to go back and look and see how whether he had any sort of micro statistics that would show that he's a useful player in the right system. And I think that he's played for three different teams over the last three years. I don't think he's been a bad defenseman. I think and Pittsburgh scores one of those teams. He's gone from being a 45% course he player basically to being above 50 and top four minutes, which is pretty much what you can what you can ask for, especially someone who's who kind of came with that really low of a reputation. Well, and he was excellent Fred minton. Especially, especially in the policies and legitimately good. He still has no puck skills. He did score a big goal in game 7 against the kings. Which I think might have wound up being the series clinching goal. But I think I wonder how much of it is because I used to make fun of it quite a bit in Ottawa certainly. And he's had some famous moments where he had the puck on his stick and did comical. He did a one famous moment then. It was a good one though. It was one of my favorite unintentionally comedic moments in the NHL. But yeah, that was leading up to kasperi kapanen's overtime winner. It was. Who can forget the moment like that? But here's the thing. I think because of where he was drafted and because of what he was thought of at the time, he was totally miscast. Yeah, because really he is like, whatever today's version of a pure defensive defenseman is. And he's good at it. But if you draft him really high and you have these expectations coming out of junior of what he's going to be, and then he just doesn't have the capability to do any of that stuff. I
