"Of the nine eleven families are continuing to seek discovery and of indication in district court in in civil court Against what the saudi royal might have been in nine eleven. What can you tell us about where those efforts stand on. Well i'll that. And we're in second but i just want to touch on what you just said about The statement that they gave out yesterday you know. I think their statement was interesting. It's kinda reminds me of what the nine eleven commission likes to say that they found no evidence. There's a difference between finding no evidence and there is no it's and i hope everyone considered that nuance because if you don't look for something you're not gonna find it. And so with example of being the nine eleven commission in look for the evidence. So that's why there was. No evidence found so keep that in mind and the second thing is when it comes to the kingdom's knowledge of the hijackers. I would point out to prince bandar the former ambassador saudi ambassador to the us whose wife somehow through i guess riggs bank since some checks to the hijackers but having said that prince bandar was on cnn. I think around two thousand seven and he said that saudi intelligence was closely monitoring the hijackers before the attacks and had tried to share that information with the us government. So i would just question the kingdom If they could try to give some clarity onto the discrepancy between their statement yesterday at the statements prince bandar having said all that this is the kind of information that the nine eleven families would like to get solely to hold anyone in everyone accountable who played a role in supporting the hijackers and the operatives that killed our loved ones. We feel that when a homicide takes place. The murderer should be held accountable on the question of the saudi royal role. I was reminded of something when i was just looking up some old clips yesterday. You are as i mentioned before one of the so-called jersey girls who lobbied to create the nine eleven commission and very active and the original people. Don't remember this. But the original chairman who the bush whitehouse was going to appoint the head. That commission was henry kissinger and you and some of your fellow jersey girls had an opportunity to meet with the famous henry kissinger right after he was slated to take over that position and The question of the saudi role came up. Tell us about your Encounter with henry kissinger back then. Well it was a very short encounter. I had done some. We had the white house at appointed him to be the chair of the commission. I did some background research on him. Not that i needed to do that much. Because i think he's pretty well now and so. We had gone to the meeting very well-prepared and we were sitting in his office. Which i might add was like one hundred degrees which i don't know whether he does purposely to make people feel uncomfortable but we were all literally sweating bullets and so at one point during the meeting. Were asking them all kinds of questions. We're trying to differential and my friend Fellow jersey girl. Laura decided to ask him if he had any conflicts and he couldn't understand how could have conflicts and were extrapolated forbid mentioned. Well do you have any saudis as clients and I don't think he was quite used to having such a direct question. Because you know you're not supposed to really ever questioned the integrity of someone like henry kissinger and he bobbled. He was drinking a cup of tea. Any bob with his cup of tea nearly fell out a seat unfortunately bill the t he couldn't answer the question. What will tell you is the very next day. We got attacked for forcing him to step down but the reality is he resigned on his own. I guess he thought it was more important to serve his saudi clients. The bin laden's perhaps rather than serve his american citizens and be a patriot. That's an amazing story. I want to go back to the issue of trying the nine eleven perpetrators or not trying them since they have not really been prosecuted but for some time at the start of the obama administration. There was a plan to try them in civilian court article three courts in The southern district of new york. Most people know that plan fell apart but the nine eleven families. I remember at the time. It seemed to me that the majority of them correct me. If i'm wrong. We're actually opposed to article three trials. They actually wanted. Is that not right. I know that there was the faculty of the media of being selective in its coverage of the reality is the nine eleven families wanted any sort of accountability whatsoever early. We there was a large swath that wanted to show the terrorists that we as a nation would be able to hold them accountable. Our court of law and so we failed to do that and at the time it was. Frankly senator lindsey graham who led the charge to block us from having those open trials and what we ended up with was the morass that you're currently seeing at guantanamo. You know guantanamo is like quagmire wrapped up a conundrum you know surrounded by debacle. It is a disaster and there is no justice. There would you. What would you want to say to lindsey graham right now because this is what i mean. More than ten years after he was leading that charge against article three tiles. Listen i know enough about senator graham to know that he moves his positions the way i tac sailboat. So which is a lot. And it's all about the prevailing winds and so whether senator graham wants to hold the saudis accountable for jamal kashogi but yet let them off the hook for nine. Eleven or whether senator graham wants to talk about how. He's tough on terrorists and he can invade countries and you know support drone strikes versus really holding them to account in an open court by the rule of law. You know he's someone that moves us positions with the prevailing winds. And you know. He's very difficult to get to want to hold anyone. Connected to the kingdom of saudi arabia accountable..

"What do you think is at the core of the failure of the united states government and maybe maybe it goes broader than the us government. Maybe it's it's our society sort of large but the core core failure to not respond appropriately and is there anything that gives you hope that we as a country will do better the next time you know. God forbid there's something as catastrophic because as another nine eleven. No i mean. I don't have any hope that things will be better next time. Because no one was held accountable. So there's no reason there's no impetus for people to do anything. Otherwise and the reality is there was an utter failure leading up to on the day of an after september eleventh you on behalf of our intelligence agencies on behalf of norad on behalf of the faa bs the airlines. They airport security. You know even at the world's are the It sounds like there's two levels of failure. There's a failure of competence and execute properly and then there's a failure of moral courage political courage. I disagree. I respectfully disagree. I don't think it was a failure of moral courage. I don't think it was incompetence. I think when you have you know. People at the cia knowingly withholding information about known al qaeda operatives who had just participated in the us. Cole bombing were seventeen. Us sailors were killed. That is not incompetence. That is a knowing decision to withhold evidence to allow al qaeda operatives to operate inside the country as they're planning a terrorist attack. That's not acceptable and that water. Why would they why would they. I'm trying to understand why they would do that. What is your. Why do you think that happened. That's what i'd like to get an answer about and unsworth The us government is not willing to tell the american public why that happened and hold people accountable but the reality is because at one small decision and by the way that's one thing at a whole host of other that contributed to the attacks being as successful as they were but three thousand people died as a result of that. I want to know as a person whose husband was killed. And also as an american citizen that that person or those people that made that judgment call are no longer working in those positions because again you know ironically if we didn't hold them accountable immediately after september eleven and then we had bad. Wmd intel take us into iraq. And you know. Is it any surprise that you're leaving people in class that make bad judgment calls one example. You give love to hear you elaborate on. Is that george. Tenet the director of the cia at the time shouldn't have been awarded the medal of freedom. He should be in absolutely under percent George tenet when he testified before the nine eleven commission was not being fully honest and i think if the american public was given access to the information the facts and circumstances surrounding the cia Leading up to nine eleven in there. Let's say interactions with these hijackers for the eighteen months at bare minimum with some of the nine eleven operatives. The american public would have an awful lot of questions. And i think that we are entitled to see that information and i think we should be able to ask those questions of our intelligence agencies because we live in a democracy and three thousand people were killed. And i want to know that. Those people are held accountable. Just like i want to know. The terrorists are held accountable because anyone who failed to carry out their sworn duty to protect this country. That day should be held accountable in addition to the terrorists who attacked this country that day. So just a flesh this out a bit for our listeners. Who might not be as familiar with all the details. What we're really talking about here. Is those two hijackers. Paul has me and college alma. Dr who flew into lax in january of two thousand after attending the al qaeda summit in kuala poor malaysia that was being monitored and surveilled by the cia and the cia was aware these guys had come into the country and then they get taken in by a number of Operatives in southern california they get put up with an apartment. They get bank accounts and are helped while they are in the united states. Planning nine eleven now. There are two basic theories about this. The official account is the cia. Didn't fully realize the information that had or hadn't circulated to the top and it and that's the reason it never got passed along to the state department and the fbi that they were in the country the one that. That's the official account. The theory of richard clark. The former white house counterterrorism adviser among others is that the cia was hoping to recruit these guys and didn't want the fbi mucking around on their territory. And then there's the third theory that this was. Somehow they were being assisted by the saudis. And that they were saudi operatives. Who are consciously assisting them while they were planning the attacks. Give us your own sense of how you sort through the what we know about the facts of of those two hijackers. And what you believe to be the case you know. I think that it's probably in amalgamation of everything you just laid out. But i think when you pull out and you take other things in context along with what you just said. That's where the problem starts even Sort of magnify when you consider that ressam. Ahmad ressam was captured at the border At the millennium in december of nineteen ninety nine in you consider the arrival of those hijackers into the la area and you know that ressam had connections to those two hijackers that raises some serious questions. You know that resolved on was cooperating with the fbi. He was not getting tortured. He was giving them an awful lot of information. And so one has to wonder what that sort of information would have been shedding some white onto additionally. You know. I am of the opinion that perhaps those two hijackers might have arrived in the la area a little bit earlier than january. Two thousand there is some evidence that shows that they might have arrived earlier. And i knew who they were living with and where they were living prior to the january fifteenth arrival how they got into the country. What were the aliases did. They have agency clearance to get into the country but putting that stuff aside. I want to also mention that the two individuals also had At some point in time live with an fbi informant additionally they were brushing up against on moral ocoee who was also known to our intelligence agencies so again the official narrative of the nine eleven story makes it seem like these guys were out there on the road and i think Former director of the fbi. Robert mueller testified that you know they acted alone and we had no way of knowing. That's just hogwash. It's just absolutely dishonest. And the reality is these cars. Were very well known to our intel agencies on all of them the nsa the fbi the cia dia. The ns day in particular is one of my favorite things. You're talking about an intelligence organization. That was monitoring the yemen switchboard. one of. You know meet arse. Father-in-law ran the which or it end. Bin laden used it to communicate to is operatives to carry out not only nine eleven but the uss cole attack. And i think also probably the embassy bombing but so again our intelligence agencies knew an awful lot about these guys so did foreign intelligence services that our intelligence agencies might have farmed out some work to whether or not. That's the saudis. Can't say because we're not allowed to see that information. And i think twenty years out. We should be able to see that information particularly when you take into context. What was shared with the american public regarding kashogi murder. I think if you are able to share with the american public the private communications between a sitting crown prince In this case. Nbs have bin soman and his tiger squad than certainly you communicate that took place in two thousand eighteen and involved in alleged murder. Jamal kashogi that information was given to the american public by president. bided february. If that information can be shared than you need to answer for me why information about wiretaps that came out of these. Two hijackers in california meet aren't me and wiretaps out of the yemen. Switchboard cannot be shared with the american public. Can any of you guys why. It shouldn't be so i think just yesterday the saudi embassy Released a kind of a preemptive statement once again exclaiming that the saudi government had no involvement in nine eleven and that it was I think false false militias claims persist yet..

"How did he play hidden in creating his image. At the height of the of the war against the soviets the might have been three hundred. Arab circled afghan arabs on the battlefield. Meanwhile the you know somewhere between one hundred seventy five thousand to two hundred and fifty thousand afghans at any moment fighting the soviet. So the arabs. Virtually no impact on in any you know strategically or even operationally on the war in afghanistan. But in bouma's mind. There is no doubt that he himself fought with almost suicidal bravery against the soviets in nineteen eighty seven. He and Some of his kind of follow us set up a military camp quite near a soviet base and they fought for two or three weeks against soviet special up special forces But you know bin laden setup this military camp you didn't have any strategic impact when the war the afghans don't really need help with fighting but imbalanced mind the his arabs. The people his follows helped defeat a superpower. I think this was absolutely delusional One of many delusions he had but it was a delusion that he felt very strongly and wish ed by others. Because you know. John lewis came to cover bin laden including Jamal kashogi who of course was quoted by the saudis in two thousand eighteen in istanbul. But jamal kashogi was the first mainstream journalists to cover bin laden and wrote a pretty low masterpiece and our big annan english documenting bin laden and his efforts and bear in mind that there are several thousand members of the saudi royal family. None of whom were fighting in afghanistan here is bin laden a member of a prominent a saudi family fighting himself personally against the soviet some recruiting people to fight against this and so it was kind of a heroic story and there's no doubt that dan lavin four with some bravery but what affected it have on the larger war. The answer is virtually nothing. You're right that he formed al qaeda there actually documents that show this. I guess in nineteen eighty eight Moves to sedan and operates there and eventually is forced to leave because he's creating problems with the saudi regime and they They exert pressure to get to force him to leave. He relocates in afghanistan and in this period. He's angry about american troops intervening after the iraqi invasion of kuwait. He doesn't like to see all these american troops in muslim countries and he begins planning mass attacks that will kill large numbers of civilians. Do we know why he chose that. Approach the why questions are very difficult in history. Why bin laden went down the path. He did i. I i try and explain to the reader. How did he get that. Because i think how is is perhaps more clear way of explaining it. So i i think there was nothing inevitable about how bin laden this shy religious teenager then becomes the leader of a group dedicated a mass motor..

"This is gonna be with us for. Yeah you mentioned this. Ramaphosa call the unrest a coordinated effort to sabotage the economy essentially stage a coup To your broader point about zuma in the anc. I mean the the anc is political parties. Been in power since nineteen ninety-four basically no real Opposition corruptions gotten worse. Inequalities gotten worse. And it's just i. It's hard to tell exactly where the tipping point was from sort of like political allies staging something to create unrest to broader thing that incumbents Basically was two of the nine provinces in south africa were basically just destroyed. I mean they account for nearly fifty percent of gdp. So it's a really big deal. Yeah and i mean the anc issued. More broadly i mean everybody remembers the heroic history of the anc in nelson mandela's leadership mundell himself stepping down instead of trying to stay in power forever like a lot of people in the world. Do but it's gotten progressively worse up through zuma where yuck when you have one party system that opens up a lot of doors for potential corruption and guys like zuma kind of traded on the legitimacy of their history as part of that struggle tragically to just kind of enrich themselves and hopefully ramaphosa. He seems to be A more on the level character but There's just a competitive. Political environment would be healthy there So that there isn't this kind of sense of impunity. Yeah that is trying to do much reading on this opening like from jacobin on the left. And then i clicked on a fox news story. It was laura ingraham and talking to lara logan. Who's a correspondent who i believe. South african lara. Logan tried to blame what was happening. South africa on critical race theory woke ideology in tech companies. And then she goes and obama's former ambassador to south africa. Patrick gaspard now. Works for george soros. It was like hawks fever. Yeah they just saw like video of violence or unrest and they decided. Let's take this and make it about the united states. Try to scare old white people once again discussed. That's really dark. That's that's your first reaction lincoln because none of that is connected to what's happening critical race theory fuck talking. Yeah i mean just shows you wha- images of black and brown people in the streets. It doesn't matter where they are whether the united states during around the road. Let's just play those and play the greatest hits right. We'll go after george soros. You know we'll go after obama somehow y- cap. Were patrick gaspard. What else insane. Yeah the dlc. Let's throw some more in there Disgusting okay. We'll keep an eye on that story But let's talk about spying for profit. So they're a bunch of blockbuster reports this week. There's an israeli company called the nfl group that has been leasing military grade surveillance technology to governments. And they've been using it to hack phones belonging to journalists human rights activists in even to women who are close to jamal kashogi. The saudi journalists. Who was murdered by the saudi government. this comes. This report is like seventeen. News outlets in a french nonprofit called forbidden stories. Who got all this information and put it out and it's worth reading these reports in full because the post and others are just like cranking out riessen reams of stories but a couple of things. I took away one. The software is being used against private citizens. The claim by the company that against terrorists onset notable to those of us who iphones. You ain't safe They're generally considered more secure. But this software could gain access to everything on an iphone. Emails calls passwords location data. Pictures straight bad news badges three victims like sometimes when people are victims of fishing attack. You think oh you. How do you click on that right. In this case you don't have to click on a link. They can just text you something. You might never know about it. You can be infected not do anything. So it's like everyone could be a victim so again lots of the story. But here's some things that really bug me ben So the ns group was founded by former israeli intelligence. And goons right. They worked for their version of the nsa doing signals intelligence. The israeli government reportedly signs off on all their licenses so in hungary gets a license. He's really government signs off on this. The us subsidizes the entire enterprise. Right we give three billion dollars a year in military aid to israel And help prop up the israeli defence industry the iron dome missile defense system. Good purchase this very bad purchase. And so here's my problem. Like the net effect here. Is that tyrants. Like viktor orban. The authoritarian leader of hungary who've written about a lot can spy journalists did the the indian government can spy on activists maybe like. I don't know that to be the case. That's not in our interest rate in so like their concerns about this software company aren't new I am sure listeners are probably this thinking. Hey you guys worked for like the. Us government the government. Spies on more people than anyone else. You're fulla shit your hypocrites you know what fine but like a bunch of companies selling spyware for profit is a very slippery slope to me and i'm just wondering what did you make these reports and do you think that we're gonna pressure these really government to say shut this down. Well i yeah. I mean i couple thoughts on this in one is to play back the tape right and and i do. I talk about this a lot. And after the fall I learned that. I was spied on by black cube in you know so block you a bunch of former massad guys and they also had spied on. Harvey weinstein's accusers right So you have massad is kind of the. Cia and nsa. It's like these guys. Just leave and set up private shop yet And what was interesting working book. When i went to hungary. Two of the people. I met with in hungary Had a connection to being spied on by block. You sean letter. One of the main characters and hungary his cousin have been spot on by block. You've worked for marta. Povey another person whose organization was spied on by black cube. I and then i talked navalny and he'd been spot on by black you and there is like the international community of people if you're if you're an ngo activist or former official like me or any corruption percent or what. Have you like something you know. We should just expect that. An autocrat or an oligarch paying like a bunch of former massad guys to buy on you or intimidate you survey and it led me to come investigate more this question of this private intelligence industry. Where any autocrat or any oligarch associated seated with an autocrat can go kind of one. Stop shopping for disinformation campaign to dig up dirt on someone to survey someone tried to entrap somebody. The person in hungary Who had actually been caught in this black cube scheme where they went to them and they they they got him describe this in the book they they got him on tape saying that he was lobbying. The european union to be tougher on orban's government. Which of course he was. He's an joe activist. But this appears in the jerusalem post of all places. That's where it's leaked right before. The hungarian election is proof of like a conspiracy by hungarian. And joe's to overthrow or bonn right. So that leads me to my second point which is again like people may add us..

"Peter let's take one step back and recap so the deal. The joint comprehensive plan of action. Jcp away was struck in twenty fifteen by president obama iranian president hassan ronnie and six other countries you as uk france germany russia and china. It was an effort then to achieve nuclear de-escalation and in a nutshell the promises by iran where to put their nuclear ambitions on hold for a decade and a half in return for the west putting an end to the economic sanctions. That were really crippling. Its economy criticism of the deal centered most of the fact that the agreement was silent about iran's active interference in its version of other countries in the region so when the trump administration pulled out of the deal in twenty seventeen no surprise. Iran retaliated by resuming their nuclear program and repeatedly breaching the terms of the agreement so the discussions on another non surprised disintegrated despite f europe. Who tried really hard to keep them alive so now. Three years later iran has pushed towards its uranium enrichment facilities pretty quickly but still an economic distress sanctions have again begun to bite. So the recent meetings in vienna. Were i guess. Mony a good step a tentative step and rebuilding confidence with a willing new. Us government now at the table but the prospects and timing of all of this pretty uncertain giving high levels of mistrust on everybody's end with each side wanting to make the other make the first concession importantly iran is facing presidential elections in june and domestic pressures for a more hardline. Approach that are weighing heavily on president ronnie. Meanwhile the neighborhood which is never a good neighborhood. Muni has become increasingly complex with shifting power structures and internal pressures and like everything else in the middle east. It's just damn complicated. In the fast five years iran israel and turkey have grown influence while countries like egypt syria and iraq which are traditional middle eastern. Powerhouses have lost power. Saudi arabia continues to be a military and economic powerhouse. But it's found it's mojo pretty depleted given the biden administration's displeasure with crown prince mohammed bin salman war in yemen and his ordering of the gruesome killing of washington. Post journalist jamal kashogi. Meanwhile ron has accelerated its support of shia militias and missiles with money in a large swath of land that people call the shia crescent which stretches basically from the gulf to the mediterranean through iraq and syria and lebanon around has also signed an ambitious twenty five year cooperation agreement with china in exchange for oil and this agreement is a game changer shifting the dynamic significantly by increasing china's foothold in the middle east and weakening further the hand of the united states meanwhile russia continues to be an unlikely intermediary also vying for power in the persian gulf so mooney. It's the typical middle eastern shifting messes. The one thing that's true. Peter is all sides agree that the longer the stalemate the harder it will be to make some type of an agreement reality and meanwhile everyday iran comes closer and closer to be building a nuclear weapon. So what is the view from the youth in iran. that's here from tehran. How tech savvy. Young iranians are shaping the political conversation and influencing the outcome of the deal and of the upcoming election..

Biden to reexamine Saudi relations after release of declassified Khashoggi report

"Turn now to president biden promising and announcement monday on saudi arabia. After that intelligence report on the killing of us based journalist jamal kashogi he was last seen entering the saudi consulate in istanbul. In twenty eighteen that report finding the saudi crown prince ordered the assassination but no direct punishment for him and tonight growing calls for justice. Here's abc's alex birsh tonight. One day after the release of that report blaming the saudi crown prince for jamal kashoggi's brazen murder president biden with this warning. Monday with chris. Botti reagan while the us has taken action crown prince mohammed. Bin salman is not faced any direct penalties overnight. Biden said he'd put the saudi king solomon's father on notice weird hold them accountable for human rights abuses in two thousand eighteen kashogi. Us resident and journalist was lured from his home to the saudi consulate. in istanbul. He was then brutally murdered and dismembered the now declassified four page assessment cited bin salman's control of decision making and support for violent measures to silence dissidents abroad before. Now now i. I believe he will never come back. After the report's release kashoggi's fiance. I teach shaky posted this photo. She took of him in their home. The white house imposed visa bans on dozens of saudis and sanctions on one former official but not the crown prince still some democrats and republicans are questioning. Why bin salman has not been penalized. I think it's fundamentally a problem. If you conclude that the crown prince ordered the capture killed but only hold people that follow the orders to account with the white house had no further guidance. On what monday's announcement will be. The secretary of state said that the us doesn't want to rupture but recalibrate its relationship with saudi arabia. The saudis have called that report inaccurate

U.S. says Saudi crown prince approved Khashoggi killing, imposes visa restrictions on 76 Saudis

"It was just about two pages long but those pages carried the weight of the. Us government will not proven a summary of findings issued by us intelligence agency state that saudi arabia's crown prince approved two thousand eighteen killing of jamal. Khashoggi it's been long suspected that prince mohammed bin salman defacto leader ordered the murder but the release of the summary finding sends a clear signal. That president biden's taking tougher stand against the kingdom than his predecessor. Npr's jackie northam has been following developments and joins us. Jackie thanks so much for being with us morning. Scott hi please give us an overview of the main findings right well just to be clear. There's no smoking gun but you know. There's a lot of circumstantial evidence in this two page report. And let me just read you a line from it. If i could quote the crown prince has had absolute control of the kingdom security and intelligence organizations making it highly unlikely that saudi officials would have carried out an operation of this nature without the crown prince's authorization unquote and scott. It goes on to say that members of his close inner circle were involved. In the killing and dismemberment of kashogi and the crown prince has supported the use of violent methods to silence dissidents abroad. And you compare what's in this report to what president trump said when asked about whether the crown prince had any knowledge of the killing and he downplayed it saying maybe he did. Maybe he didn't and One of the things to keep in mind. You know this report is a summary and there's a lot more evidence that the cia has about khashoggi's death that remains classified this report summary note but Does seem to say pretty bluntly that. The saudi crown prince has blood on his hands What kind of potential impact Could this happen relations between the us and saudi arabia. Which after all has been a very close ally for decades right. yeah well. it's it's definitely bound to have an impact you know. The crown prince is likely to become king of saudi arabia. And we'll be around for a very long time and it'll be interesting to see how the us will deal with him both in the short term after this report and certainly in the long term once he becomes king. We don't know how that's gonna shake out yet but as you say. Saudi arabia is a longtime ally in a really strategically important area of the world. You know in an interview with npr. Yesterday admiral hanes the director of national intelligence. Said it was just too soon to tell if the relationship has been damaged by this. Let's have a listen. It is not surprising. I suppose to see a shift in the relationship in some ways with the new administration and a new position and the number of challenging issues that we face together. But i think there will be what he's to whether the various storms that we have in front of us and one other thing. The saudi foreign ministry said on friday that the kingdom has already jailed. Those responsible for kashoggi's killing and that while it completely rejects the reports findings it called. Us saudi relationships robust and enduring. Jackie calls from From many quarters Clothing members of congress Human rights organizations calling on president biden to to punish sanction of the crown prince For his role in khashoggi's death. How likely does that seem to be. Biden's stop short of severely punishing the crown prince. But he said on. Friday evening that from now on the kingdom is going to be held responsible for human rights abuses and he said that there would be more significant changes announced on monday. He didn't indicate what those might be. But you know the administration did take some other steps yesterday. It announced something called the kashogi ban which allows the state department to impose visa restrictions on anyone acting on behalf of a foreign government Who's threatening dissidents overseas and it's already imposes kashogi ban on seventy six saudis and their families. And you know secretary of state. Anthony blinken talked about these moves by the us yesterday. Here he is. So what we've done by the actions that we've taken Is really not to rupture the relationship. But to recalibrate to be more in line with our interests and our values but apparently this travel ban doesn't include the crown prince himself and administration officials said on background yesterday that as a matter of practice. The us doesn't apply sanctions on the highest leadership of countries with which it has diplomatic relations and already there are increasing calls for tougher action against the saudi crown print

US implicates Saudi crown prince in journalist's killing

"I'm anthony davis saudi arabia's crown prince likely approved the killing of journalist jamal khashoggi inside the saudi consulate in istanbul. According to a newly declassified us intelligence report released friday that instantly ratcheted up pressure on the biden administration to hold the kingdom accountable for a murder that drew worldwide outrage. The intelligence findings were long known to many us officials and even as they remain classified have been reported with varying degrees of precision but the public rebuke of crown prince. Mohammed bin. Salman is still a touchstone in us saudi relations. It leaves no doubt that as the prints continues in his powerful role and likely ascends to the throne. Americans will forever associated with the brutal killing of a journalist who promoted democracy and human rights yet even as the biden administration released the findings it appeared determined to preserve the saudi relationship by avoiding direct punishment of the prince himself despite demands from some congressional democrats and kashogi allies for significant and targeted sanctions. Saudi arabia's foreign ministry responded by saying the kingdom categorically rejects the offensive and incorrect assessment in the report pertaining to the kingdom's leadership democrats in congress praised the administration for releasing the report the trump administration had refused to do so but urge to take more aggressive actions including against the prince representative adam schiff champion of the house. Intelligence committee urged the biden administration

But i think even more importantly than that was the brazenness of describes some somebody walking into their own consulate seeking wedding papers while they're fiance is waiting outside for them only to never come out again and then for us to find out that he had in fact been murdered dismembered just a horrific situation so i think there were a lot of elements that really catapulted this story to the top of news feeds and then of course you know the kingdom itself and the repression going on within saudi arabia. That at the same time was being heavily marketed and promoted that mohammed bin salman was this great reformer changing saudi arabia opening up saudi arabia allowing human rights

Trump and Biden's Diverging Visions for American Foreign Policy

"In our ongoing election coverage were taking a deep look at how president trump and democratic. Presidential nominee Joe Biden differ on major policy issues. Today, we're going examine foreign affairs mark. Stewart spoke with the journals national, security reporter Warren Strobel. A lot of attention in recent days to the Middle East obviously president trump is touting success with peace accords with Israel. Let's talk about the trump approach versus the biden approach. Yeah I mean in the waning weeks of the campaign here Mr Trump has secured really historic agreements from the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to make peace with Israel and recognize it diplomatically big achievement. No. Matter how you count it. I think most people would agree but there are fundamental differences between the Republican Democratic candidates particularly when it comes to Saudi Arabia Mr Biden has said that he would review relations with Saudi Arabia, which is probably the most important US ally in the Middle East that he would consider stopping arms sales he's been very critical of their killing of the journalist dissident. Jamal Kashogi Mr Trump on the other hand has declined to put pressure on Saudi Arabia. Really. In any significant way he sort of dismissed defining by the CIA that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman probably ordered the killing of Mr. Kashogi and he has vetoed congressional moves to limit arms sales to Riyadh. Saudi Arabia obviously issues in the Middle East but also Iran. Let's talk about the different approaches there. Yeah. Here again, that's quite a stark difference Mr Trump. Two thousand seventeen withdrew from the Iran nuclear accord known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on. He has launched a campaign of maximum pressure designed to limit Iran's ability to cause trouble in the region and try to force it back into talks. He's also by the way in recent days Mr Trump has said get reelected around will come to the table and we can make a deal real quickly. Mr Biden has said he would go back into the nuclear agreement. He would get the United States back into that agreement if Iran also returns to compliance. So again, Joe Biden is tough on Iran but he is much more. I think looking at diplomatic track to try and halt their nuclear program. Another region of interest is certainly Europe. Obviously there are economic issues, their political as well as military issues. When we look at Europe, how big of a role does the relationship with NATO play in this discussion? You know I think it plays a significant role. NATO's the probably the most important and one of the longest standing alliances that the United States has. Important economically in terms of the trade between the United States and Europe, and important strategically given its role in sort of countering Russia Russia intervention in places like Ukraine Belarus. Again there's differences here though Mr Trump has been pretty critical of NATO. He demanded that all the countries live up to. A promise they made to spend two percent of their GDP. Self. Defense, and there have been rumors that he might withdraw from NATO entirely or want to. This is Chris from Mr Biden who again stressing the importance of good alliances with Europe and other parts of the world. You. Briefly mentioned Russia, where are the distinctions in viewpoint and policy between the two candidates? That's a good question. I think the trump administration has been in terms of my reporting and analysis sort of a weird bee's when it comes to Russia Mr Trump himself. No has been quite friendly with and trying to strike a good relationship with Vladimir Putin, but the people in the middle and. Upper levels of US government agencies are taking much more dim view, Mr Putin, and actually you know the US has done a lot of sanctions and other actions against Putin during Mr Trump's terms. So there's sort of a kind of a bipolar aspect to his administration's dealings with Russia Mr. Biden. I think has been more critical. Putin personally and has said he would stand up to Mr Putin on things such as election interference the Russian incursion into Ukraine and other things like that.

Jeff Bezos Got A Shady WhatsApp Link From The Saudi Crown Prince And Was Hacked

"Reuters writes that the Saudi Foreign Ministry has again dismissed claims of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman's involvement in hacking Amazon founder. Jeff bezos is phone as absurd. That is they didn't do it. And especially the the crown prince didn't do it but investigations are in progress and it certainly seems that something was done to Mr Basis device. Is it possible. The Crown Prince May Himself Elf have been hacked either his phone or WHATSAPP account as some have suggested. Well sure maybe. And it does seem odd that a crown prince would directly actually get his digital hands dirty on the other hand who better to hack the richest man in the world's device than a fellow billionaire who's met him at the places where billionaires go to meet in any case buzzfeed notes Saudi aligned. Twitter accounts have been doing a lot of anti bezos wolfing with accusations of insincerity concerning his expressions expressions of mourning for the late Jamal Kashogi a discreditable personal life. As evidenced by the intimate pictures someone provided to the national enquirer and so on buzzfeed thinks the accounts doing the tweeting are a part of a coordinated and inauthentic campaign presumably directed from beyond so does the United Nations in Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial killings. Agnes Alamar told buzzfeed quote the hacking and the campaign are two actions taking place place alongside each other both of which aim in my view at intimidating creating fear and ultimately controlling or silencing the people who are the object of both hacking and the campaign and quote. Mr Bezos has been the target of such campaigns before. NBC News reported that they began shortly after. Dissecting Trump's Twitter 'Diplomacy'

"Their Israeli for better unusually for worse no more enthusiastic proponent of twitter diplomacy in US President Donald Trump joining us now to dissect a representative few of trump's interestingly punctuated blurts. Is Brian Close political scientist. I author and Washington Post columnist by way of imbuing trump's tweets with a finesse. The ill deserve. They are read by foreign desk producer. You'll engulf on any and all grammatical infelicitous of the fault of the author not the narrator September fifteenth two thousand nineteen mystery missiles target. Saudi oilfields Saudi Arabia. Oil Supply was attacked. There's reason to believe that we know the culprit are locked and loaded depending on verification but are waiting to hear from the kingdom as to who they believe was the cause of this attack and under what terms we would proceed. This is amazing tweet because this is the second time that Donald Trump has issues locked and loaded. The first was when he was saying that he was about to attack North Korea. And it just shows you know the twitter diplomacy made on the fly where nobody believes what trump obsess anymore. You know that He. He is a saying who's behind the attack. People are questioning that and then you have. This claim that he's about to attack them which people again are questioning with good reason that his twitter threats are increasingly erratic and also unfounded and never backed up October. First two thousand seventeen reaching out to Kim Kim Jong UN being nasty Rotman hasn't worked in twenty five years. Why would it work now? Clinton failed. Bush failed and Obama failed. I won't fail. I love this tweet. For several reasons I is that he's has been nice to rocket man hasn't worked in twenty five years. Kim Jung took office in two thousand eleven. So penalized him when he was a child probably wasn't going to be a very fruitful way of conducting diplomacy anyway Clinton and Bush of course did not even deal with Kim Jong into any point and then the second layer of this of course is saying that being nice to him hasn't worked it won't work now. Well trump said that he was in love with Kim Jong Hoon after this tweet so I would classify that as being nice and then finally. I won't fail well. I mean what's happened. Since trump's multiple summits with Kim Jong is that Kim has gotten a massive boost international national profile and legitimacy by meeting with President without any preconditions and has simaltaneously ramped up the missile program and the nuclear capability which is the only point of involving involving Kim Jong UN and diplomacy so there are many many problems that tweets but my favorite one is the idea that trying to have diplomatic relations with a three year. Old Somehow didn't work. July thirtieth two thousand nineteen trade wars are good apparently and easy to win. China is doing very badly worst year in twenty seven was supposed supposed to start buying our agricultural product now no signs that they are doing so that is the problem with China they just don't come through. Our economy has become much much larger than the Chinese economy is last three years. Where do you start with the stuff of it? The idea that the US economy has eclipsed the Chinese economy in the last three years because because of trump is an amazing claim. And then the other thing. That's sort of unspoken this tweet but if you know trump's tweets really jumps out to you is the number of times that he contradicts himself so he constantly says things on twitter like China has just announced that they are going to be buying massive amounts of soybean from a great Patriot farmers and then a week or two who later. He has this tweet where he says. Effectively they're not actually doing it and then he'll come back and make the same claim again and so it's this sort of whiplash that twitter allows him to get away with because his base. Here's this they think okay China's now going to buy some soybeans well. The people in his twitter base are not the people who are actually selling soybeans. So they don't know if it's happened and they believe him and he can get away with it and this is where I think. Twitter diplomacy also bleeds into domestic politics. Where you end up having a lack lack of accountability because you can just shoot off a claim everybody moves on and then it's like it never happened when it's false? I think that the trade war stuff though is also indicative of how miscalculation can be very dangerous because China is actually reading these tweets trying to make not just sense of them but make policy based on them and they have no idea what it means. I mean it's riddled with Typos and grammatical errors. And then you know. They're they're scratching their their chins sort of saying will two weeks ago. He seemed to be happy with President. Then she now he's not and this causes again. Miscalculation which is I think the name of the game for twitter diplomacy July eighth two thousand nineteen some thoughts on Brexit and on the. UK's outgoing going. I'm blessed to the. US have been very critical about the way the UK and Prime Minister Theresa May Handle Brexit. What a mess? She and her representatives have created. I told her how it should be done but she decided to go another way. I didn't know the ambassador but he's not liked or well within the US we will no longer deal with him. The good news for the wonderful United Kingdom is that they will soon have a new prime minister. While I thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent state visit last month it was the queen who I was most impressed with so this tweet I think unveil some of the other problems with twitter when it comes to diplomacy and that is that statements of national importance is can be made without vetting. You know if there was actually communicate from the White House in the past this would have gone through a series of different advisors it would have been checked and the first instance in which trump trump tweeted about theresa. May He misspelled her name and accidentally tagged somebody with I believe one hundred sixty twitter followers. So you know. It's not exactly a crack team at the White House when it comes comes to twitter but then beyond this when he says she didn't go the way that I said what he's actually talking about according to the UK government is his suggestions that she sued the the European European Union as a way to solve brexit which his maybe it's ludicrous it's idiocy it's not going to work and then you have sort of the basic ignorance that comes out of these types of tweets. Were win actually. Trump arrives in the UK and gets pressed on various tweets though ask him questions and the followup about say is the NHS on the table the National Health Service on table in trade negotiations and he doesn't know what it is and this is again. You know this is the problem when you can make a statement you interfere in the affairs or politics of an allied country country and have no idea what. You're talking about October sixteenth two thousand eighteen taking Saudi Arabia's word for it just spoke with the Grand Prince of Saudi Arabia who totally denied any knowledge of what took place in their Turkish consulate. He was with Secretary of State. Mike Pompeo during the call and told me that he has already started and will rapidly. Expand fanned a full and complete investigation into this matter. Answers will be forthcoming shortly. This is of course about Jamal Kashogi who's a fellow columnists the Washington Post just before he was murdered and dismembered by the Saudi government which then led to a series of attempted cover ups by the Saudi government's with trump's help where he tried to sweep it under the rug. And and say you know they don't know anything about it and provide political cover to the Saudis and I think you know. This is the dark side of twitter where you can very quickly spread. What is clearly misinformation in pursuit of diplomatic relationship where trump clearly values for a variety of reasons whether it's strategic reasons or his financial conflicts of interest with the Saudi Kingdom? And you know a different president a pre twitter era first off would not have made the statement and secondly would have waited till the facts came out before staking the credibility of the White House on something something that was going to be very quickly debunked. I mean one of the famous examples during the Kashogi investigation was the idea that he had left the consulate. When the Saudis put a body double in clothes it was similar to Shoji's but forgot to change his shoes I mean it was amateur hour and for the US president in the White House to be affiliated with it because of such sporadic in a quick quick tweets was just embarrassing for the credibility of the United States August? Twenty of two thousand nine hundred an attempt at humor accompanied by a mockup of a trump trump casino on the Tundra. I promise not to do this degree land so this is a a photo shopped photo of trump property a trump hotel in greenland amongst a sort of sparse looking fishing village. And I think this is well is one of those moments where you have trump make a comment in the sort of real oh world right off off of cyberspace where he says. Maybe we'll buy greenland and then it sparks. This whole controversy of how Silva's claim is this proposal etc and and then he tries to make light of it as though it was a joke to begin with on twitter. But I think that this is also important in highlighting the risks of twitter in terms of photoshop or doctored images and trump did this with greenland as joke and there was obviously a joke. But there's other times where he's done and hasn't been a joke so he has sent tweets where they have basically doctored video video of Jim Acosta the CNN reporter who was temporarily banned from the White House looking more aggressive than he was because they speed it up his arm movement yeah right and this went throughout the conservative twitter sphere. Very very quickly. You can imagine something like that happening in diplomacy to. That's the big risk is that as deep technology for example fake videos that look very convincing or photo shopped images or any sort of disinformation campaign actually gets promoted by governments and by presidents presidents. That's where we answered very very dangerous territory and this type of stuff. I mean again when you think about the combination of Dr Video doctored images all being promoted by trump trump with no regard for the facts and the lack of credibility that he already has how much more dangerous it gets when you try to make sense of as a foreign diplomat Brian. Close thank you

Filmmaker Barry Levinson on Ukraine scandal

"We have an email from Oscar winning director and screenwriter. Barry Levinson. Who writes if this hearing was a fictional oh piece of material it would be presented in a totally different manner? One of the democratic players would ask this question. How is it possible? That president trump was looking into corruption in in Ukraine. Suddenly he is crimefighter has the president has has the president ever tried to end corruption anywhere at any time in his his life over the years he's been found guilty of stealing from his own charity. Also the president has been found guilty of running fake university and stealing money from people who believed in him. The president has paid off women because of his sexual aggressive behavior. Now out of the blue. He wants to clean up corruption in Ukraine not Russia where Putin has killed off opposition players poisoning them in far off countries. President trump has no real problem with the Saudi prince. NBS having his butcher's chop up a Washington Post Post reporter not a real problem or turkeys aggression against Kurds not a big problem but the Ukraine is corrupt. That needs to change. Are we supposed to believe this. Donald Trump wants to clean up corruption. Starting with Biden's son. In Ukraine the Democrats have not yet emphasized this absurdity at the center of the Republican defensive. Donald Trump might that moment. Come in the house. Judiciary Committee impeachment hearings or art in the impeachment trial in the United States. Senate we are joined now by one of the jurors in the possible impeachment trial of Donald J trump if he is impeached by the House of Representatives. Senator Amy Klobuchar is a Democrat from Minnesota and member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. She is also a candidate for president of the United States. Senator and it's because you're candidate for President United States Florida. I believe you have all you already have the strength but have built up the strength to deal with the kind of frustration. Australian that Barry Levinson is feeling and people all over the country my feeling about this movie person. He knows that truth has become stranger than fiction. I think makes that point. The second thing yesterday member is you can't that long of a question would take your time. The third thing is I think that Adam Schiff I was trying to focus and did a very good job of this on what was in front of him and I think these arguments will be made later but remember this phase of this was gathering offering me evidence from career diplomats career military. I will never forget. Seeing Fiona Hill today I saw snippets of it of course and just her STOIC STOIC nature and the thought of her my favorite story that I read today about her was when she was a little girl in school and some boy behind her set her pigtails on fire and she doused it out with their own hands there. She was and she was focused on what was before her. And that was what Russia did the Ukraine didn't do and I learned from going to Ukraine twice now and once with Senator McCain and Graham I mean Russia tried to influence as as we know in a big way Ukrainian elections they put up a puppet and not only that they invaded their country an annex Crimea so this this thought that it was Ukraine that was the bad actor is absurd and I was really glad that you pointed this out. It's not to say they don't have problems in their country with corruption option but I loved how she explained today that for the president corruption in this case was code word for going after getting dirt on by I they had a different introduction for this segment tonight until I got this email just minutes before the show and what what I thought it captured was the kind of viewer frustration. That there is out. They're in watching this and just to clarify we know that in a courtroom. That wouldn't be admissible if if Donald Trump is on trial for ex. You couldn't bring up all these other things you know that. Art The About his life but this is a different arena. Would we hear something like that said for example in the Judiciary Committee when they're considering impeachment or could that be said that kind of thing be said in the Senate impeachment trial. This is example of evidence because the fact that In this case he was allegedly that corruption crimefighter and when you have other countries and other things that happened including the murder of journalists Jamal Kashogi he showed no care Really absurd relevant. I would think it would be but I think again a lot of this is going to depend pen and what our Republican colleagues do and this is their moment to decide. Are they going to put their country first or not. What would your reaction to Mitt Romney Susan Collins and others having lunch with the president today it disappoints me It's legal or anything like that. I could see if they were going over there on a major issue. That of course would be fine but instead this is what's happening and I just hope that they listened to the evidence and that they remember what this is really about. It's putting private interest partisan interests in front of our
