"To grow. Good afternoon, I'm Mark Lewis And I'm Deborah Feinstein. Mike cicadas is our producer. Breaking news on WTO, D.C.'s attorney general. As announced he's filing a civil consumer protection lawsuit against the Washington commanders, owner Dan Snyder, the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell. Karl Racine is announcing that suit in a news conference that is underway at this hour. He says Snyder lied to D.C. consumers when he denied knowing anything about allegations of a hostile workplace environment at the team. The team's owner did it to protect himself and the profitability of the team. The evidence shows mister Snyder was not only aware of the toxic culture within his organization, he encouraged it. And he participated in it. Mister Snyder exerted a high level of personal control over everything, the commanders did. And his misconduct gave others permission to treat women in the same demeaning manner. In a statement out yesterday, the commander said they have fully cooperated with the attorney general's investigation for nearly a year, and that the AG has quoting here fundamental misunderstandings of the underlying facts. Well, now to the latest on the economy, inflation was up 7.7% in October over the previous year, still high, but that's lower than it was in September. And boy, the stock market is responding in positive territory, the Dow up now 888 points, the NASDAQ had 6 21 and the S&P up one 64. We talked to CBS business analyst Jill schlesinger about the new report. If you look at the October report, we see the CPI up 7.7% from a year ago. And just the month prior, it was an 8.2% annual increase a few months prior to that. It was at 9% increase, so the trend is our friend. It is going down. That's the good news. And the core rate, which strips out food and energy, those numbers also look good. The core rate was up by 6.3% from a year ago. And again, that is down from the previous month where we saw a 6.6% annual increase. These numbers are still big, okay? So there's no sugarcoating that. But this report is probably the first one that's really soothing the investors nerves. That's why they're buying stocks. They're feeling like maybe the fed is getting close to the end of the rate hike cycle. Well, that's right into my next question. This should be a sign, right? That the fed's efforts are working, but will this slow rising interest rates in the coming months? I don't want to be a buzz kill. You know, I feel like your people are calling me buzzkill jail right now. But here I'm going to be a buzzkill. So just to put a fine point on this, one of the big components of what we all spend money on, it's shelter, right? The cost of our rent, the government also tries to figure out, well, what's the cost of shelter for people who own homes, they say, what would it cost you if you had to go rent the house you're living in? So that's how they come up with this shelter index. The shelter index accounts for a third of the overall CPI and 40% of that core rate. Shelter actually had the largest monthly increase in October since 1990. So that tells me, and that will tell the fed, their work is not done. Shelter costs are up 6.9% from a year ago. So we've focused so much on energy, but it is really shelter where we studied the bulk of our money. That is CBS
