It's patrick because last year it was thrill edmund who was moving in and moving into difficult situations. They solve problems like when they had a match. Up mismatch rene problem. It was terrell edmund solvent latte that game when they were having trouble with cold beasley when they were having trouble with steph on digs. They were moving fitzpatrick to that spot. And they were keeping troll edmonds deep. So i'm very interested to see if they continue that with minka or make it becomes kind of that problem-solver position. Or if they you know kind of divert back and that was a one week thing where they really saw. Hey this is this is something. We can attack facing the bills that i'm looking forward to going forward from what i saw with what i think. He was a missile. He was a missile over the that bowl a few plays where he ran raw down into the the running back was a covet him. I believe he almost got to pick way was really close around the area. Athleticism is lincoln high out there on the field. Also i think it's just gonna make us a better defense so when those guys come back into gives back we're going to be loaded. What's the what's the big threat that you think that can blake that teams can exploit the steelers and something that we really need to work on. Otherwise we all losing thirty two nil. We always in these guys. What's something that we need to fix. Well we're still seeing in my thing. We're still seeing job. Acclimate to this defense. It took devon bush. Awhile to get used to vince williams. It took them a while to get used to mar when he first came in a last season. He only played with vince williams and they they were on the same page and they were credible together. So far early this season they're not standing out the linebackers like you said Devin bush looks fast. He looks healthy. That's the good news but they were really. They didn't seem on the same page. There seemed to be a lot of late communication between them and there seemed to be even some hesitancy especially from dose over It it doesn't seem like joe chauffeur's entirely comfortable in this defense yet which is a good thing for the future right. That's a good thing for when these guys get together this is going to be better But right now heading for the next couple of weeks. I would look for teams to go after. Joe devon bush and really test inside linebackers especially with emotions in some difficult coverage assignments. Try when you when you catch them in zone. Throwing three different routes coming through their zone and let them sort it out. Make sure that they know you know they they. They're both on the same page. That's i think you're gonna see teams. Think they can attack. Steelers is gonna be entrances resting to see how those guys respond. And i think we could see this week. When you've gotta darren waller and you've got Kenya gonna play. You know you you can. You can really attack the linebackers those guys. Yeah darah bowlers He's an amazing. Human is amazing supply'll while these look these really fun to watch the andros sweeter shutting down but tight anything that we can anything. That's a threat to the steelers. That can be exploited I think i don't disagree with jeffrey. I think schober. Bush still still have a lot to show us. But i think i think their lack of production less call in last week's game was more because again play. I mean buffalo stretches you out for four or five. Why so the the whole bunch of runs we only blitz time. So you know like they just weren't always in the action. They were kinda just playing their zone whether we heard their name on lamer not i think they i think they were a huge help in minimizing stefan digs in passing game just by playing their zones. In being where. There's supposed to be. I i did see some of the miscommunication and stuff like that. I think something. i think. Just cohesion with the offensive line. Is something that we could be exploited on still just because the because you know we. We have a young long inexperienced relatively going against a veteran. Along with the with the raiders with cries being nasa. And those guys. So you know those guys. Run some stunts and things like that. I think we. Maybe that's the place we can be exploited at. But you know i. I still kind of like the way they played in. "I think that i liked the tape. Captors i think that hayward has leadership Somebody said that nevada it might have been what with the situation is At every thank hayward was right choice. and dairy quiet you know. He's the leader of that special teams Especially with guys like dangerfield gone so yeah i think they picked the right choices. There you go so Yeah i i really think that as well too and as far as you know. There are rumors in the slack. Channel about t. J. watt that now we have some people saying that. They don't think it's going to happen. Dave scofield reminded of this earlier on the in fact. I actually saw him. Put this out on twitter. There's about five or six players that took longer to sign their deal. Unluck closer to the season. And i remember. I remember a toy paula. Mallaby and one of them cam hayward joe haden. We've seen a lot of guys go right up to the wire so that's some think about as well so i would not lose faith on that until kickoff on sunday and if it's not done at that point because i remember fellas if we can go back to two thousand fourteen and this was the the start of the start of the regular season against cleveland. It's when brian hoyer came back and almost won that game. they were beaten up on cleveland. They announced right before the game. That cortez allen and marcus gobert signed extensions now those that was not oppressing suppressing of situation. But they do. We've seen them do that on saturday night. Before the star of the regular season in sunday morning as well so to wrap up the tj talk. I'll go with tj. i really yeah. I think it's a matter of a guaranteed money. It's something that somebody have to give in. either watching. Have to have to concede something or they're going to have to go out of their comfort zone and signed him and agree to more guaranteed money and they're used to. I think that's what it hasn't the hold up is obviously they. They know it's going to take as far as like a structured contract. You're talking about average salary per year to keep him here. It's just a matter of how how far into the contract that they want to go with with the guaranteed money. I think that has to be on. It's holding up. They're not gonna low ball him with a five year forty million dollar deals. That can't be what it is it has to be. You know th th. There are probably in agreement in agreement in principle with with the length and the average salary is just how much guaranteed shannon white. Is this going to be a distraction if this goes into the regular season without a deal for tj. What a lot of people try to make it one From the local media to the national media but jay will give the same effort regardless He'll be outstanding player. he always is. I have no concerns about that I agree that. I think it's the the guaranteed money Which would definitely be going out of the steelers comfort zone They're going to have to start giving more guaranteed money on these contracts. I don't think it'll be a big factor. With what my main concern. He has played any this free season. He hasn't been hitting. Going in to the regular season last week we talked about some of these games going into the before training camp. So we're gonna talk about the entire seventeen game schedule here as well. But i want to go back to the confidence rating with the t. J. watt situation with the trades. The team once again is always tinkering. They are not standing pat. They're always looking to do something so if you don't think that they're not i've seen a lot of people you know be depressed that the team wasn't addressing the secondary situation. Obviously they are trying to address that with bringing in a guy. Like karl joseph bringing in kello witherspoon in the last couple of days so they this is not. This is not your steelers of just ten years ago. They where we've seen them say. Hey we're okay going on the season. This is our crew. This is what we're going with. So i wanna talk about confidence rating. I after everything that's gone on in the last week since our last show and then we're going to go into the into the schedule shannon will start with you confidence as far as the the roster is presently set confidence for the season. The season I i would say. I'm about seventy five percent confident because to me the question. The big question is still into one I think this is going to be every bit as good as last year. i think the special teams is going to be better because they've got so many Excellent athletes on that the kick coverage teams. And then you got percy Presently harvard on me But the officers gonna go as far as office vodka. Take him and so. I just wanna see steady improvement. They don't have to be dominated. They don't have to be the best line if they can be average by of the season This office could be special. So yeah i i guess i'm seventy five percent confident. Tony your thoughts yeah. My confidence level hasn't really changed. Because i what's going on right now. With the line in the secondary. I expected that. I think we all did we. We knew it was gonna be a question margaret line because they're adding all these new players. It's completely different line from last year. You have a new coach so they can have that solve by week one. It was going to be an ongoing process that was gonna continue into into the season and hopefully At some point sooner rather than later they they figure the right combination out. These guys build some chemistry cohesion. And and as dave centers skill position players. This offense can really be dangerous if that line is even average so in the secondary you know again. They made a big decision when they moved on from. Mike helton was inevitable. When god from steven nelson that was gonna it was gonna take some work to to rebuild that secondary. So you know i'm not. I'm feeling pretty good. I i've been saying all along. I think is a roster that could be a few negative or positive plays away from being anywhere from seven and ten to seven and ten ten and seven eleven six. I think that kind of team so my my confidence is about the same. I'm feeling pretty good about a lot of areas. Like i'm really excited about nashi harris and the defense and alex smith. "Coming out Thought this was kind of big news but as things went on and ultimately this this breaking news. Podcast is about the steelers depth chart going into week one but we'll get there in just a moment real quick. Those jersey numbers that came out jamir jones changes jersey number. Two forty buddy. Johnson moved to forty five wait. I thought that was joe schubert. Yeah joe schubert moved to number ninety. Three also kello witherspoon. He chose jersey number twenty five. They also assigned jersey numbers to the other practice squad players. That weren't part of the steelers. Most notable karl joseph who was reported to possibly be moving up to the steelers fifty three man roster once he clear some protocols is number thirty. I'm not gonna get into all the others at this time. But the other thing is the pittsburgh steelers chose their captains for the twenty twenty one season. They selected ben rothlisberger on offense cameron. Heyward on defense and derek watt as the special teams captain so Missing from last year there was five captains had to on offense to and defense and special teams which was jordan dangerfield. So derek watt first time captain for the steelers in his second year rothlisberger and hayward has been seven straight years. That's as long as hayward's been captain. Rothlisberger has been captain thirteen times at eleven straight years. Two thousand ten. He was not a capital one in there. But the other offense of captain from last year was mark pouncey who retired and on defense. It was tj watched who there was some news with watt. Today he did not return to practice in any different role the what he's had throughout training camp so that kind of setting off some more panic and steelers nation I would say wednesday when the team practices and they have to give an injury report. That's going to be a real big indication with tj watt. Talk about him in a little. Bit more ear on this depth chart and we'll get more information tomorrow from head coach. Mike tomlin and his press conference scheduled for noon on tuesday. So let's get into this depth chart real quick because of some very interesting things. Let's let's start off with the offense and we'll go with the offensive line if went by the older depth chart. They only had four offensive lineman because they hadn't filled in a name for the starting right tackle. But as of right now with the new depth chart from the pittsburgh steelers. here's your starting offensive. Line right tackle. Chook sikora for moving back to the right side like he played last year. Right guard trae. Turner center kendrick green left guard. Kevin dotson left. Tackle dan moore junior. So that's the offensive line. That's the move. A lot of people expected some people were really reading into jc. Half an hour still being the first player listed on the depth chart that was simply because they had a mirror. Preseason the steelers hadn't changed it but kendrick green is. You're starting center with an hour and reserve joe. Hey is listed reserve tackle on both sides a bj fini's listed as the backup to turner on the right side at guard and left guard with kevin. Dotson the backup is listed as rashad coward Let's go ahead and jump into the wide receivers. The steelers have three wide receivers listed as starters. They have it in three different slots and that jujubes. Misuse turkey. Andre johnson and chase klay poll. The backups to those players. Are they have ray ray mcleod. He's behind smith schuster. But i don't know if that matters and they have james washington listed by the johnson. I would read into who they fall behind. That's just the order that they listed him at tight end. Here's what's interesting. Even though there was only one slot they squeeze two names into it. They have both eric. Hebron and pat fair moves listed as the starting tight end on. The first team was zach. Gentry as the reserve quarterback is what we expected. Ben rothlisberger one mason rudolph to duane haskins three derrick watts listed as the fullback and For running back is nausea harris followed by bennie. Snell junior and then kaelin balaj. That's the way the steelers have it for now. We'll see how the playing time shakes out when that ends up coming around. So there's the offense the defense here's some interesting stuff The way they have the defensive line they haven't listed as a defensive tackle at defensive in a nose. tackle it generally been hayward to it. Awhile well steph. Onto its on injured reserve so a tackle. They have cameron heyward backed up by isaiah louder milk at defensive and they have chris worm leaves the one and carlos davis the to and then at nose tackle. They have tyson allah with isaiah bugs in reserve now for outside linebacker. Trent jordan watt one. Tj watt is listed as the left outside linebacker on number one on the depth chart that has not changed we. Hopefully we'll hear more from coach tomlin about this tomorrow. If they plan on him being available for week one and then on the on the right side is alex highsmith. The reserves are the same for both they did it for both melvin ingram's listed as the reserve for both players followed by jimmy jones when looking at the inside linebackers. They have devin bush listed at the left. Joe schober the right. I'm not gonna read into left and right there but those are your two inside linebackers the next set of inside linebackers because remember the steelers have six is marcus allen and robert spelane then the third set is buddy. Johnson and ulysses gilbert the third. So that's kind of interesting especially if the steelers are going to have to make any more roster moves. You're probably looking at guys that are further down the depth chart and a lot of people feel that inside linebacker where they have six players could be somewhere where they have to make a move otherwise we'll get to that soon became cornerback. Here's what's interesting. The steelers in the past have listed slot corner or nickel or nickel corner as a starting role. They do not have that listed here. They do not have any quarterback listed in that way so all they have is left and right. Which is joe hayden on the left in camp sutton on the right on the first team. The second team is justin lane behind. Joe haden and james pierre behind cam sutton then. They're the third team has a pillow witherspoon behind justin lane. And arthur. Let behind james. Pierre no surprises it safety as its toronto edmonds. A strong safety minkah fitzpatrick is free safety. Miles killebrew's backing up crow edmonds with trae norwood backing up. Mika fitzpatrick finally to finish things off. Let's talk about the special teams. No really big surprises. When it comes to the specialists. Of course a chris boswell as the kicker presley harvard the third is the punter and holder and christian koonce as the long snapper. Ray ray mcleod is listed as both the punt returner and kick returner for the first team now. His reserves are let's go punt returner. I is deonte johnson to and then james pierre third when on kick return it goes rain. Mcleod benny snell junior as the second kick returner in jeans peers. The third It'll be interesting to see when he comes back from injured reserve. Anthony anthony mcfarland where he would fall with. It would be a head of railway mcleod behind because he was used a lot during the preseason so there is a pittsburgh steelers depth chart but they released today very interesting. It's funny because there's it's not a lot of big surprises but more a less or less there was a lot of confirmation of speculation on especially when it comes to the offensive line. So it's interesting with with these things just to see how they lay out in the in the reserves and everything else. I am pleased to see. Tj watch still there Probably because he is on the fifty three man roster. They're not going to remove him but they did list him. As the first player we should get more information on. I'm not as excited about him as other people are because you know there are a lot of people who think he will. He was reaches a first round. Pick which let's face it. The raiders have been known to reach for in the first round for players. And i think joseph was probably more of a maybe a second or third round pick a strong safety and he got pick fourteenth overall but he is a veteran and He does have some abilities. So if you're looking for someone who can be a decent backup safety You could do worse than karl joseph. So if that's all he winds up being a is a decent depth piece in there you go. i'm not. I'm not that impressed by it. But but it is nice to see them addressing the depth issue. And it's like. I've been saying all off season the off season. It's a fluid situation just because they didn't do anything about depth in march or During the draft or immediately after the draft or or even during training camp doesn't mean that they're they're not going to do something about it eventually and now they're making these moves and they're all kevin colbert said a long time ago they're always looking at players are always looking to make moves. You're always looking to improve so it's just a matter of when they decided to do it and sometimes it's not always about making moves right away. It's about waiting in seeing what developed saying who gets cut seeing who becomes available in a trade. So you've seen that in the last few days with them. Karl-josef became available after cut down day so they picked him up on the practice squad. They apparently have plans to make him a fulltime member of their roster Witherspoon became available in a trade because of some other moves at the seahawks made and So they picked him up and for fifth round. Pick so there you go on that note having said that as to address one more thing about about this before i move onto something else. And that's this this ongoing story ongoing perception about steven nelson. I realized the reason why the secondary is in such a flux is because first while they might help left as a free agent he was starting slot corner one of the best in the league the past few years. Now that was expected you know he was gonna. He couldn't work a long term deal with him so he was eager to join the hit. The free agent market he did he signed with the bengals. They had a plan. And that plan was cam sutton they recite him. They sign him to. They gave them a raise. That was the plan he was going to be a new slot corner. But not long after that The rumor surfaced that they were looking to either trade steven nelson or if they couldn't find a trading partner a suitable trade it. We're going to cut him well once they once. You heard that you knew he was going to get cut once you put it out there at you. Either gonna trade a player or cut him if you can't find a suitable trading for him then you know you pretty much destroy the trade value of that player so you knew he was going to get cut and eventually a week or so later. They released him Not without some controversy Consisting of his tweet city. Put out there please. You made your decision. Don't hold hostage. Please move on and they did eventually not not long after nelson went public with his His dismay over the situation But the belief was that you know steven nelson when he signed here in twenty nineteen He immediately became one of the better cover corners in the nfl in. There really wasn't much talk of him regressing that much in two thousand twenty then all of sudden and these integrate are fairly well with sites by pro football. Focus if i'm remembering correctly but he's certainly was a really good started for them for two years and all of a sudden they cut him. And there's this again this perception that that first of all he wanted a contract extension which apparently was never in the works and at that they went to him and ask him for a pay cut. Take a pay cut in. It's been verified that he he was never approached about a pay cut so There's that perception is also the perception that suddenly he he was. He was a a liability as a cornerback which nobody ever really mentioned for the two years that he was here. You know what really the real reality of situation was. Steven nelson is the steelers. Were in in salary. Cap hell at the start of the calendar. The new nfl calendar year and they had to make some tough decisions in early many options for them. You know as far as restructuring So they decided that they couldn't justify paying nelson eight million dollars which what he was doing base salary for twenty twenty one so they decided to move on from him a tough decision they made it and they had to live with that decision but this that nelson was somehow either a a disgruntled player or that. He was an awful player on the field. Those just not true. So i just wanted to clear that clear that up because i think it's it's an ongoing narrative that won't go away for some reason. I think a lot of has to do with the fact that.

"So i i think he can make a spot from ulysses gilbert third and then kind of Sacred joseph linebacker. Justin lane is also someone that a probably on the cutting block but the steelers don't have very many corners at all So that's another name. I could see i. I feel if they're going to release the corner though they're going to be bringing corner in So if someone's gonna to end up off this team. I think they look at that kind of inside. Linebacker spot and yuji threes just showed me nothing in honesty. Kinda shocked to begin with that. He made a team the first place so i think that's probably where they look to try to trim some fat to get karl joseph in line up all right there you have it. Mr sorry coach. They might struggle and they're going to lose games folks. They're going to lose games and you will. You won't hear me predict him to lose much. Just that's just the fan in me but nonetheless prepare yourself for a season that might be up and down but maybe it differs at the end. Think back to go five. Two thousand and five. There were a lot of bumps on that road in no one myself included. Thought they had a shot at actually winning it all in and got hot at the right time. Same in two thousand nine against the toughest schedule in the league. Boy did they just step up and play big and big moments and that was a team that two thousand and one thousand nine. That offensive line was awful as well. So just keep this in the back of your mind folks. It's not going to be easy. This season is not going to be a cakewalk. This season is going to be rough. You have to you have to bunker down you gotta anchor yourself and say i'm gonna stay steadfast behind this team. I'm going to support him no matter what we're gonna continue to fight the good fight and that is rooting this steelers team on to victory every single week. "Wasn't available for that game. Really number of steelers players weren't available due to the kobe policies A year ago. But stefan digs he absolutely embarrasses steelers field that day a year ago. So now i want to see what the steelers able to do with the hayden back in the lineup. And of course this rebuild secondary and whether or not they add another nickel which still seems like on the on the table wise. I feel like they have to make haven't done it as of yet as the time of a recording this but this secondary needs to have a big game against stefan digs because honestly us one of the big reasons why the bills were so successful against the steelers on thursday night or i believe the game was played so hopefully ad they're able to contain him so only the very big and important game for our secondary i'm gonna i'm gonna go on the other side of the ball and yeah i agree one hundred percent the the corners in the secondary. We talked about that a lot. I'm gonna go running running game. The steelers are going to have to run the football. And they're going to have to run at just well enough that they can set up play action for once my goodness for once we are actually talking about the steelers. Potentially getting back to rothlisberger under center play action pass is driving the ball downfield. This canada wants to do every article for the website on thursday about mac canada's comments about play action. How creeds mismatches. And they can really start to utilize the tight ends the. We still don't quite know enough about them. And we've seen kenneth green get bullied a little bit in his kind of welcome. The nfl moments like these guys are gonna get better but kind of lack of knowledge of the nfl. Playbook is a little bit worrisome In in that sense. I think a core for dotson and trae turner are going to be fine. It's an aggressive scheme. They can kind of get after seeing things but dan more tender green are going to have to do a lot of thinking and not as much just playing football at those upper levels. You really have to kinda understand all the intricacies what to do in team stunt against you when they blitz against you and given the size of nfl playbook there's just a ton of thinking these guys are gonna have to do So from that sense the rookies are going to be the the two spots. I am definitely honed in on to see how they perform in. If they're ready for this moment They'll get better and better goes on but there could be some growing pains especially early on in the season. Run it down their throats on the left side of the line. You don't have to think much when it's escape. Snap the ball and see the guy in front of you and just driving backwards. I remember in the preseason when we saw dodson and more together. And i'm sure you remember this michael. They were mahler's you think they can duplicate that in the regular season. It's not going to be as easy. Obviously but still. I mean that should be their forte. Right honestly i think the the best version of the steelers offense align is when you have dan moore author left tackle and you have a healthy healthy. All those dues are run block the first guy. So you're starting to push guys back. Nausea harris doesn't have to make someone missed three yards into the backfield instead trying to make miss at the whole. That's a big thing and like you said this left side of the oftens line datsuns. A people mover dan. Moore's of people mover tendering that still his thing. He's an aggressive type. This lesser offense line. I think is where the steelers are gonna find a lot of success running football an until zach. Banner gets back. I wouldn't try to run too much right at the point of attack behind core four. He's he's more that kind of pass block guy. But i think they're gonna find a lot of success with those double teams being able to climb in the second level over that left saudi off his line. Yeah i visited the steelers if they wanna go into buffalo and win in week one after run the ball they have to control the clock they have to they have to dictate what's going to happen offensively. And that's by running the football. So that's where i'm pointing to one hundred percent. We'll get into that more next week though. I wanna ask you one last question about one specific player in this player. No one really knows what's going on. And it's karl joseph. He was obviously acquired. He's on the practice squad right now. But jerry do lack or buddy gerbera from its repairs is that he's not really our buddy anyways he he said that the steelers play on activating games. If you're the coaching staff. You're mike tomlin keith. Butler tara lawson. Whoever is making these called the decisions. How are you. Utilizing karl joseph in this defense. Because it's already good. Does he make them better or is he just another body no he definitely makes them better at an honesty looking at his skill set he someone the teams like he could play a little bit of everything amino how much mike tomlin loves. This guy I remember when they played the browns last year all three occasions. Mike tomlin always brought up karl-josef when they played the raiders when he was there saying thing either Gush over this guy for years. They finally have on the roster. After years of hyping his guy. I feel used to be playing a lot of spots a little bit strong safety a little bit. Like a dime baecker heck even maybe into the nickel in that slot type role. I think he's gonna move over the all over the field a ton and he's not just to play one specific spot. Hopefully he's up to learning an entire defense of course of about ten days to that buffalo opener butts. I think the steelers got a real but numbers. Type a guy Someone gives some electoral edmonson rests. Give them certain packages get on the field. I think curl. Joseph is gonna play ton. He's complained special teams. I think this is a this is one of those editions that says is going to be kind of a sneaky. Good one is. I haven't seen the contract details yet. I don't imagine it's gonna be more than a million bucks or really kind of affect the salary cap that with the fifty three men rule now in effect so i i think this guy is going to play a ton team in considering how much the steele's coaching staff is. Hype them up. In in years past i of this will not be his final season. Pittsburgh either as interesting. Who do you think. It's the fact that my gosh jerry dulack are the pittsburgh post gazette or as we call them on the website gerbera. He's saying that the steelers are going to activate him in. They're going to put on the defense. He might be filling those antoine junior role that we all thought he was going to the slot and things like that. I'm not sure what to think of that. Because if carl joseph comes on and wrote this article thursday for the website if coral joseph is active right away once he clears. Crow cova protocols which i think six days or something like that if clears kovic protocols and all that good stuff then you have to ask yourself. Who's going to get cut. Who's going to play that gets cut. They have fifty three players on their roster. They have one open spot on their practice squad. Not on their active roster. Of course this has been a very busy week especially for your pittsburgh steelers and of course around the nfl. So if you've been consuming this information like i've been It's it's been one of those insane weeks across the nfl landscape but I guess really kick things off. There's a ton of news today but maybe we should start off the show on a positive note. Pittsburgh steelers signed curl joseph The former first round. Pick of the oakland raiders. Former cleveland brown. Back to the raiders gets cut. He signed to the practice squad but after his sixty corn teen is expected to make the fifty three man roster. Jeffrey what are your initial thoughts on curl. Joseph the new safety slash linebacker slash Swiss army knife is a mike tomlin described. Traynor would well. What are your thoughts on the pittsburgh. Steelers news player. I've liked carl. Carl joseph is coming out of college. He's he's not quite the player he's had some injuries but getting him to the practice squad get him for like you know nothing claiming him claiming off waivers even just signed him like a cheap deal. This is kind of a thing. And i i like the signing. I like the you know giving a guy with that kind of pedigree that kind of experience in the nfl because he was a good player when he was healthy. I like it. I like bringing them on board in this in any way affects the status of terrell edmonds. Could he pushed him for his spot. I don't think so. No if you look up what karl. Joseph is like even last year. He he can't. He's not a coverage guy like he was not a coverage guy when he came into the league his injuries of made him significantly less of coverage guy. So i don't. I don't see him being a threat to really any of the main. Any of the main safeties are defensive backs because he's just not that he's not that guy. It is pretty interesting. How will the steelers use him. Then in your opinion what what can spot should we expect in the lineup at will planning special teams which we expect out of Joseph they call. It was the plate special teams in oakland. I wouldn't doubt that he could is good tackler. I actually think. Karl joseph is a good candidate to get the marcus allen treatment. The like play some linebacker here I think he could get work in dime against certain teams. I don't think he's a deep safety kind of guy. I e you can use them in joan zone but he was always good in more of a linebacker or robber type zones those type zones. He was always better at that. That's where he got his interceptions that's made most of his plays so for me. I think he is a candidate to fill marcus allen death linebacker role And maybe get in on some some interesting some packages now jerry. Dulack was the man who broke the news that curl joseph not only signing the team. But it's expected to come up to that fifty three men roster after quarantine period in that scene tweet. He mentioned the pittsburgh. Steelers are more likely still going to add another defensive back They really haven't addressed that nickel corner spot. Arthur led of course. He signed back to the team today after the steelers play. Some guys i are. We'll get to that but it seems like there's still a a fairly substantial hole on that on that nickel corner spot. Do you expect them to still bring someone in because right now the way. You look at the roster. It doesn't seem like there's that guy and it looks like there's a number of free agent. Second i would. I expect them to pursue somebody one of my favorite mos interesting things about this. Preseason is that aside from cameron sign right. Outside of cameron sudden every single player they have put in the slot in like early in the game is listed as a safety or a linebacker because these are the guys these are the guys that have played in nickel or dime in the slot early on in any of the preseason games should antoine junior. They listed him as a safety. Arthur millette they listen to him. As a safety miles. Killebrew played there. They list him is a linebacker. Marcus allen has played in the slot he's listed as a linebacker and traynor norwood who is listed as a safety so it's three safeties and linebackers Which i find interesting because the steelers are always grabbing these kind of hybrid players and using them. Safeties guys like a make. Patrick where people are like is this guy. Linebacker is he. Is he a cornerback. Like what is like these guys that can play all those positions but don't really fit one perfectly. The steelers love collecting them. We've got a whole slew of them and they're trying them at the nickel spot. So i'm going to be very interesting to see if they do sign someone you know. What type of player they sign. But i'm also interested if they're unable to upgrade the position at all and how they will play the dime role. You know the the nickel slot because it's clear to me for what they were doing. Preseason they are really still looking for that kind of safety who can play in in the nickel or dine. Defenses and inside corner yahoo just the way this roster is being constructed. I would also assume that a body is coming in. I believe Jimmy moreland was one of the names that are floating out there. played for the washington football team last year. I've pretty solved player. He was cut on the injury designation. But it's still expected to play in week. One be healthy enough to play for week one. So if there's a name to watch. I feel like that's the one i throw out there. If the steelers weren't able to swing a trade which at this point seems a little less likely although the steelers still have a ton of cap space that something we have to keep in the back of our minds are kind of stepping away from the more positive news of course but staying in secondary. Joe haden today a little bit of news with him. That's him the steelers will not be working at a contract. This offseason This i guess This training camp. Of course we know. The steelers don't negotiate deals during the regular season slash. Postseason and joe. Hayden is expected to test free agency next summer. I'm curious what were your initial thoughts to that. And do you think this is going to be the end of the joe. Haden era in pittsburgh after the season. I always like the steelers. Don't like to extend guys early unless they're like their top most valuable players like it. Y ben rothlisberger can get a new contract anytime you want it. A but most of the time they go pretty close to their deal ending so wanted to hit me here either. Joe haden wants money that they're not willing to give him or cannot give him looking at what they're trying to do right now and so they're saying hey played out a year or they really are ready to move on from him Maybe they think that. Highly of james pierre and they're basically just grooming james fiero to be joe hayden's replacement next season. That's a possibility i. I'm leaning towards some finding a way to sign. Joe haden cut the salary. Cap will be bigger. There'll be more money. I i don't i think it's smart for him. Money wise to wait till next year and played out and see because there might be some teams with that much cast base saying. Hey we can blow money for two years on joe haden and give us a give us a guy who can come in and fill in here for a bit i. I would prefer that to be the steelers. "In the regular lineup or at least as a key reserve coming up in the future seasoning would be very good for more gilbert. I'm glad he has an opportunity. Really glad to see him back a guy who had an intersection in the season donovan. Steiner was also retained steiner. Looked very good. I believe in the first preseason game that interception against dallas. The safety is back as well. And there are a lot of concerns about depth in the defensive backfield which brings me to the next player. This one is going to make a lot of steeler fans happy because they were really pining for this guy when he visited the pittsburgh steelers back in april. It is the one and only west. Virginia mountaineer karl joseph. Joseph ended up signing with the raiders. The team that drafted him in the first round of years back and now he has been cut by the raiders and he is in the steel city on the practice squad with the issues at safety. That might be interesting. You might be seeing karl-josef almost fifty three man roster in the very near future. But carl joseph is back now. We were talking on the tse slack. Channel and jeffrey benedict brought up the fact that he is almost a clone of marcus allen except for he does have a little more pedigree little more experience. And karl joseph picks up the defense he could revive his career in pittsburgh. So that's going to be very interesting. Karl joseph i think has a lot of talent. Glad to see him on the black and gold practice squad the other players. Here's another interesting one to me now. I was confused by this. Because i think the steelers made a typo because on their regular fifty three man roster christian miller in the inside linebacker was listed but he is actually a practice squad player. As i'm reading the actual list from the steelers. So i think that is a mistake. Also they picked up a player from the denver broncos who played quite a bit last year derek tisco and to cisco looks like a very good inside linebacker. Very good special. Teamer good opportunity for to scott here in pittsburgh to round out the fifteen. Here is a defensive end that is coming. Courtesy of the chicago bears his name. Is daniel archibong so daniel archibong on defense in a very crowded. Gosh there's a very crowded defensive line in pittsburgh in a lot of that was thought to be because of the fact that they think that step onto it is going to be on the injured reserve. Joseph fan all right but be a backup safety making over a million dollars when if everything goes right. You're not even gonna see the field except for special teams. I think that the raiders just kind of thought you know what we could probably you know. Save money and bring along some of these young guys you know. So it's abram or marriage. I should say as the starters and then gary gillespie which he was. He was a draft pick. So that's not should be surprising. But then now the surprises rodrick teamer makes the final roster as a safety. You know i was told by my producer before the show started. Marks johnson is producer by the way of the show That rodrick team were actually I wasn't even aware of this rodrick. Teamer played for bradley already in In the chargers so he he he had a leg up on a lot of these guys because he already knew the scheme he might. I think he might have been on injured reserve or something like that last year and then there were places. Preseason where he kinda he kinda showed up you know So he definitely didn't have a bad preseason. But i think the the kicker here okay when you got karl joseph. He's a box safety. Only right and i think you want some guys where your backup safeties to be able to play either spots in rodrick teamwork did play in the post as a free safety exclusively. This last week. so i think that that's something that they looked at taibbi. Gillespie has also played deep in the post in college. He was a free safety so there. There's some flight position flexibility. now with the backups. That perhaps one of these guys could play either spot. I think that that's kind of what made the determination as well for the safety position. Having this big surprise. I guess he was the one that started the fight. Special teams fight. So maybe he's a. He's a dog on special teams. Maybe this guy stuck on his team you know we. We didn't have the special teams all twenty. You might This coming you're watching. The special has man. I gotta i gotta you know you you might you. You might have been See this adds up. Because i think that's how he made the team. I think that he outplayed down. Lebanon special teams. And i think he's younger. He's probably faster. Who is a little bit bigger faster. Yeah for in plays a little better. "You can also download the app vegas nation. Let's get right to it sam. The raiders cut their roster down to fifty three. It's not etched in stone whatsoever. There's going to be a lot of moves. I think made over the next forty eight hours but any surprises regarding what What we saw today. How you doing great work today. Greg today becky over. A number of those moves broke several of those transactions. Great work as always. We appreciate it for me biggest surprise. I don't think there's a ton of surprises. You take a look at the roster in for the most part guys that we expect it to make the team guys that had prominent roles in training camp guys that we expect to have. Prominent role season are on the team The one surprise to me. And i guess it's not too much surprise when you contextualize training camp and how everything went through the preseason Brown three years removed from the one thousand yard season. You figure you know his speed. His veteran presence could play a factor there that receiving core. But it goes to show you that. The raiders have a lot of faith in henry rugs in bryan edwards to take a step forward in hunter renfro to continue to be a productive sought receiver and and felt it was. It was a mutually beneficial. John brown asked for his release. I expected to be a market for him with the raiders. Feel good about where they are at receiver. So that was the biggest surprise for people for the most part this roster looks how i expected it to look at this point of the season. What about you. What did you think. Yeah and As it relates to john brown zeta-jones also continues To to emerge as a guy that the raiders value as a reserve player maybe even as a spot starter. There's a lot of value in zeta-jones that goes obviously the numbers because he really hasn't put the numbers up but there's a chemistry that he has with dr carr. There's also an understanding now going into year. Three in this offense of what the raiders are doing so Not a bad option to have that deep down on under depth chart. It'll be interesting to see what some of these younger wide receivers Dita turner and dylan. Stoner who did get cut. Whether they're brought back in some capacity. Very lisa i would think both would be on the practice squad. And who knows maybe one could end up. On the on the regular season roster fifty three man roster as well i thought karl joseph in the in totality was a bit of surprise but the writing was certainly on the wall on sunday when he showed up in santa clara along with john brown which is somewhat unusual given all the veterans and key players. Were back home in las vegas. Not only were they there but they both played and that was an obvious indication that something was amiss in futures with the raiders probably wasn't You know real all that secure and a lotta times in that situation. And i think i think the coaching staff was pretty far along on their decisions and i think they just wanted to give it one more look to make sure they weren't overlooking anything or had missed something or basically given these guys one more shot to kind of convince them otherwise Obviously neither one of them did that. And in john brown's case it sounds like he asked for the release so There it is. But i think that aside from that maybe a little bit of derek carrier. I know that he's a gruden guy. As a lot of value as a blocker a special teams player But obviously the raiders for now anyway have gone in a different direction with their third at a tight end. But other than that you know. I think that for the most part it was it was pretty cut and dry In terms of of the cuts I'd like to throw this out to you. What do you feel. good about. In terms of the roster's strengths. And where do you feel like. They're still a little bit of vulnerability yahoo question. I think the like what we saw during training camp. We talked about during the off season. I think there's a lot more depth on the defensive line. A number of those players. The raiders went out there and acquired during the off season to fortify that line. Make the team and same with the secondary. Those those two units. I think go from obviously mrs last season on one of the bottom. You know. One of the worst defenses in lead to death. Now you have some some veterans. Now you have you some rotation and some competition that i think is going to make these unit stronger throughout the course of the regular season in terms of depth. Where there's i think question marks obviously vinnie linebacker right because we know nicholas moral a good chance. You're going to want to have to get him acclimated before you really let him go so i think i expect them to kind of mind. The the waiver wire for help linebacker or to shore up that unit and then running back to of course you what you have. Which shakeups drake as the ops guys but jalen recharged with banged up. I was a little surprise. Trae reagan's after the season that or the preseason that he had a one. He showed that he wasn't going to get a look on the on the active roster the fifty three man and start the season. But like you said this is so fluid. it's early. Maybe there some some some wiggle room. And and i think i would be surprised if the raiders checked out to see what was out there wanting back. What about you what were your initial takeaways. Yeah and also. I think that You know if. You're the raiders. If nf jalen rashard is starting the season On the injured reserve which that definitely could be the case Which would mean it would be out for sure for the first three games. At least if that's let's just go down that road if they're gonna put jalen on. I r i think the thinking is whether it's bj bj are trae ragas. One of those two guys probably both We'll get through waivers. And i say that because when you when you look at the waiver wire process One or both of those players will have had to convince somebody elsewhere. Thirty one other teams one or two whatever the case might be of thirty one other teams That they're good enough. Not just to claim on waivers but then they have to put on the fifty. Three man roster. You know what i'm saying like like you can't just pick up a guy and then put him on your practice you have to. That player has to go on your fifty three man roster. I'm not so sure that either trae or bj has moved the needle Enough around the league for that to happen. So i'm i'm i'm guessing. The raiders are gambling a little bit that either one or both will survive waivers and then re brought back and at that point Maybe one of them is the replacement for rashard on the roster for the for the duration of his I are visit if he goes on. I r or if he doesn't have to go on i r then you've got to Practice squad candidates that on that practice on the out of those two players so one way or another i think one or both will certainly be back and in the meantime you could also if recharges only gonna miss one game. I think you can get by with combination of josh jacobson. Kenyan drake And and alec angled as the fullback slash backup Third running back. We should be able to get through it. And if you don't then you're always gonna have then. You'll have one of those two running backs on the practice squad To bring up in an emergency situation in case something were to happen between now and jalen rose shards return. So i think that's kind of how they're they're playing that So i think they'll they'll.

"Get right to it sam. The raiders cut their roster down to fifty three. It's not etched in stone whatsoever. There's going to be a lot of moves. I think made over the next forty eight hours but any surprises regarding what What we saw today. How you doing great work today. Greg today becky over. A number of those moves broke several of those transactions. Great work as always. We appreciate it for me biggest surprise. I don't think there's a ton of surprises. You take a look at the roster in for the most part guys that we expect it to make the team guys that had prominent roles in training camp guys that we expect to have. Prominent role season are on the team The one surprise to me. And i guess it's not too much surprise when you contextualize training camp and how everything went through the preseason Brown three years removed from the one thousand yard season. You figure you know his speed. His veteran presence could play a factor there that receiving core. But it goes to show you that. The raiders have a lot of faith in henry rugs in bryan edwards to take a step forward in hunter renfro to continue to be a productive sought receiver and and felt it was. It was a mutually beneficial. John brown asked for his release. I expected to be a market for him with the raiders. Feel good about where they are at receiver. So that was the biggest surprise for people for the most part this roster looks how i expected it to look at this point of the season. What about you. What did you think. Yeah and As it relates to john brown zeta-jones also continues To to emerge as a guy that the raiders value as a reserve player maybe even as a spot starter. There's a lot of value in zeta-jones that goes obviously the numbers because he really hasn't put the numbers up but there's a chemistry that he has with dr carr. There's also an understanding now going into year. Three in this offense of what the raiders are doing so Not a bad option to have that deep down on under depth chart. It'll be interesting to see what some of these younger wide receivers Dita turner and dylan. Stoner who did get cut. Whether they're brought back in some capacity. Very lisa i would think both would be on the practice squad. And who knows maybe one could end up. On the on the regular season roster fifty three man roster

"We may seem real sticks. Okay so you mentioned it. Sam and i was right there with you in terms of john. Gruden's kinda gushing over the secondary and a couple of times yes absolutely You know and i know. And i asked the question about tyree glaspie You know Keep an eye on tari. Gillespie it's just somebody that you know what i've been doing. My detective work During the off season and checking in on guys in trying to get a handle on things. It's the name of that. Keeps coming up now. Look It's one thing to flash with shorts and helmets and out there playing touch football during ota's An it's an entirely other thing to do it when the pads come on that's usually differentiates. You know the the the guys that are just the start of the the wonders in charts and shoulder pads in almonte and the ones that are going to be able to bring it when the real lights go. Why but after say this before we get to the full secondary the thing about tyree. Gillespie has that part about whole with the With with the pads. That's where he truly excels so that's the part of his game that everyone talks about is the physicality that he brings. What i think is encouraging for the raiders and for raider fans is that he obviously showed it on the mental side during oj's which is very important as well and then applying it on the on the on the football field so he's firmly planted themselves On their radar. He's gonna have a role this year. Jon gruden talked about for sure. Special teams I don't think it's going to be too long before he. He figures out a way to get on the field now. That's one point. Go point. I wanted to make real quickly sam and then get your thoughts is as i was writing it. It was ki-. It's kind of ironic. That jon gruden talks about this group being strength when the reality is there's one to two maybe even three spots that are completely open right now for competition. So he's talking about the secondary being what he considers could be strength of the team. And yet only two starting positions trayvon mullen at one cornerback and probably jonathan abram At at box safety truly being You know Firmly sat right now. And even. But but in abrams a jonathan's case if he doesn't play well there he's he probably won't be for long at this position. Okay so logically. You would think okay. How could he be talking about that. Being a position of strength when really he only has two. Starters identified right now. But you have to look at it from the opposite end of that to me. And i want to get your thoughts your sam. I think what he sees as a whole bunch of players that he can. He feels comfortable with whether their starters are role players that they're going to be able to man all whatever positions are still up for grabs not only able to adequately man those positions with the depth that they have and the players that they have on hand but also those backup positions as well so i just feel like he feels like yeah okay. We don't quite know who the starters are going to be. But but it's actually a good thing. It means that they're having to settle on any players. There's open competition because there's multiple good players on hand to potentially compete for those jobs. So i think out of all of that with all the competition all the names that he named they're gonna be able to come up with not just a good solid starting group but also good start at good good quality depth ours the rotational pieces. I'm i'm with you hundred percent and we kind of you know we touched on. We saw how this roster was being built out in what they were doing to address different position groups. Of course the aussies right going back to free agency and then in the draft and then as the summer continues and this was a an area where there wasn't a lot of depth last year there wasn't a lot of experience and there wasn't a lot of players that you can count on her that you can rely on. There was a lot of youth. And now you look at this unit yes. Most things are still true for the most part. It's younger unit. But you have veterans. You have guys that are that that are familiar That have been in the in the proverbial trenches so to speak. You have a casey hayward you have even got karl joseph a veteran. That's been there done that. With this particular team you have a residual douglas. You have the young guys. Now that are progressing that are going to be in year. two year three And then you have again. Gus rally and mindless who have a track record as we've touched on for the last eight months of player development and and putting is position to be successful so yeah you take a look at that unit now. That's the biggest thing the depth in the competition. That's gonna come with it. So yeah maybe you don't know who you're starting outside corner is and we're starting corner is or what exactly you're you're doing for sure at free safety but you got to three guys that you feel good about that whoever's out there is going to be able to produce a maybe you don't know who that is yet but you figure it out and neuro position where they again competition they get. They have multiple players. They feel confident. In where the best interests and then be like you said beyond that you're going to have deaf because as we know especially now. I think we're the seventeen game season. Football is a game of attrition right the healthiest team. It's a lot of times. It's who who. Who is the last me. A standing who was last team standing. Now that there's depth in the defensive backfield. I feel like based on what gruden was saying today that there's some comfort internally that knowing that hey regardless of how this shakes out who wins what position we have guys that are versatile enough to fill different holes to fill different needs and to build out a much much better unit than they had a year ago and it makes sense because they really invested a lot of capitol building that unit. Yeah and it's always been my experience Sound when when when coaches go that far out on a limb as john did today And you're obviously he's optimistic. Obviously he's fired up. It's the day before training camp You know what he says today might be completely different than what he's talking about or feeling two months from now But it's always been my experience. That coaches don't normally give it up like that just for the sake of give it up you know I think he like you said internally he feels good about what he's seen thus far and is excited about where that group And ends up going and there's no doubt that Anything less than like he said. It's going to be a strike the team. I wrote that at this point. Let's be honest. The raiders were take basic competence in that group This year and if they are able to get that huge improvement from last year now having said that we're talking about the back end of the defense it really does all start up up front and As much as john was gushing about that secondary he also gave it up for the retooled defensive line. And i know in talking to him during the off season He's been fired up about this group to For for a while now and he mentioned unique unique and gakugei at the key. Kind of echoed. What a lot of us that watched. Ota's really saw especially in mini camp. That's when unique agok way showed up so so during those two days of practice when when he unique was there. I'm not kidding around. Sam like there's a there's a difference between him and everybody else and that's not taking away anything from anybody else because max crosby looked really good. I thought Cle- farrell look. Good carl nasa was in tremendous shape during during not as many camp. The rest of the guys look pretty good and look solid enough and able to contribute but unique in gakugei just has that you know what i'm saying like you know you just have to do is watch it for about a minute and go okay. This new different and think good about that as well today tip. Yeah i mean forty five and a half sacks meeting over the last five years that's over nine sacks here right like that's that's production on on the edge that is real that is real pressure and you go back in terms of his bill. Two thousand seventeen led the. Nfl forced fumbles with six woman had twelve sacks so when he's at his best he is one.

"That was hornbach. The mgm c. o. Talking optimistically about the opening of allegiance stadium to full capacity time for for this season talking to to the raiders. There obviously optimistic as well. Knock on wood no question. They're you know they're they. They have to adhere to whatever the state. Regulations are at that point But but you know their hope is that allegiant is going to be open You know a restriction free. Come august when when season comes around. Preseason comes around and i know that There they understand especially with the feedback that they're getting from fans How everyone is it up the bit to get inside legion stadium and really make it the home field that everybody envisioned here in las vegas. That stadium was going to be An and you know we've talked about this ad. How many times sitting the empty stadium in an important parts games and we're all sitting there wondering wow what would it be like if sixty sixty five thousand people were were in this building. I want to get your thoughts on that. But also and Mark between the president of the raiders brought this up as well You know when you think about allegiance stadium As fans they're thinking about getting in there and make it. A great environment for the raiders. Making a difference as we've seen other stadiums difference makers and key parts of the game just because of the atmosphere that creates and all of that is true But when you think about allegiance. Stadium the stadium. This deal this partnership between the nfl. And las vegas and the state of nevada There's financial implications as well and the stadium is expected to be a driving force Here in las vegas and not just for the stadium. Not just for the raiders. Not just for you know The people that run the stadium. But let's be honest about it. You know people like bill hornbach over at mgm. And and you know the the sands corporation everyone that has a vested interest in the hospitality. Business here in las vegas having a stadium like allegiance stadium open full-throttle throughout the course of the year. This isn't just a football stadium. This is going to have super balls in final fours events and concerts and you know we could go on and on about what is going to be in there. What's what's what does that mean. That means people are coming to las vegas Yes obviously the locals are going to be supporting a big time. But throughout the state of nevada throughout the western part of the country and really even nationally people are going to be coming in on weekends for big events and staying up hotels and eating at the restaurants and gambling and drinking and do all those things at pump money into this economy were coming off covert teen And you know everything. All all siser are pointing up as far as getting back on our feet here in las vegas but this place was going to be a strong i of financial influence as it is but even but now coming off covid nineteen and the importance of getting really getting back to two strikes hereafter. What was really tragedy. People losing jobs. The economy being obviously affected because the tourism Industry took a big hit during covid. Nineteen that as well is an important part of this is not just what is going to look like in their on sundays which we all can't wait But what it means to this. Local and state is huge as well right. Do you survey the landscape in. The pandemic was devastating for everybody. That's not that's not breaking news like it was devastating for everybody. But this vegas like you said this. This market relies on tourism and hospitality. That's a majority of the economy that more people work here into in hospitality than anything else and part of hospitality. Part of like you said why people come here for entertainment for shows for what they thought would be football games for concerts for offensive. Elisa's stadium was really a game. Change right we'll beyond say would go on tour before there wasn't a venue in vegas that she could go performance. Now there is right and now there are now the mega fight like canal. Alvarez billy joe saunders down eighteen stadium in dallas. They considered allegiance to you but at least stadium was already to have a full capacity of fans yet. So you think about the marks events boxing. Ufc concerts like you. Said final fours wrestlemainia. Whatever you name it. This allegiance stadium opens the doors for all those possibilities to come in vegas and It's going to be we're gonna get this year. What we thought we were going to. Have you know last year. Going into the season. And i really. I think it's even going to be amplified even more because think about the excitement or the energy that people who raiders fans in general of different events build up cheering on team from the couch the entire year when they thought there would be at the game. So the i-it's is the perfect timing. I mean really. I mean it kind of needs to happen and i'm really excited now. Like you said we got to see where the pandemic set. Obviously were all really optimistic. We want this to happen. But we're gonna see where everything's happening. It feels many living in vegas. That things are starting to turn a corner here by. Hotels are starting to back up. The cases are it. Feels like it's getting to be more manageable vaccine is being more and more distributed and it's like there's a glimmer of light at the end of this long tunnel that we as a country we as a community vegas. Musil world have been just driving through waiting for some kind of end in elision stadium in the nfl. Like i if if the raiders adding their full season here in front of fans if that's like the metaphorical sunshine at the end of the tunnel. I'm all for it right. If if it can safely happened than it needs to happen you know some of those games last year right like the really competitive fund ones were. Were going to be competitive fun nonetheless foot like you really felt in absence of a crowd like football spectators when you have sixty five thousand strong making noise a being into the game like it makes the experience more fun for everybody involved including us as journalists. It feels like there's more of an event on as opposed to just a game being played for tv audience so It's it's here will say that. Very optimistic still still cautiously optimistic.
