"And you've got, like you said, it's not a small deal that your coach is reported to want to resign or considering resigning, he never also, by the way, answered directly whether he had considered that. From his answer, it actually sounded like he had considered it. And just was like, we all at the end of every season we all think about whether we want to come back. It's like this isn't the end of the season, man. So Nate McMillan has often had really good starts to his ten years with teams and then just kind of fizzled out and that kind of looks like this might be what that is. So we'll see. I'm interested to see what happens, but it's not looking great right now. The best you think you can hope for right now is that Trae Young just plays better offensively and then maybe some of the stuff becomes a little bit less valid. And then real quick the wolves. Is there anything for them to do? I don't know that they can move off Gobert. They're in a weird spot. It just is, you definitely can't move up him this quickly because you would never get unless you're just happy with like ten seeds on the dollar, yeah. I'll use the quick analogy. You know, I love my now fiance as we talked about earlier. And when you're going ring shopping and you know, maybe you get cold feet for a moment or maybe you just are like, it's not even copy. It's like, is she gonna say yes, which, you know, frankly, if you have a really deep question in your mind about that, you shouldn't probably be buying one. But I'm more interested in like, what's the return policy here? If I decide I want to push this back, if she says no, whatever. And they're like, buddy, you're not kidding. Look, unless there's something wrong, you're not gonna get your money back for what you're paying for this. It just doesn't work like that in the industry. So then your resell value is extremely low because a car stones depreciate after you buy them. That's what Rudy Gobert is right now. Nobody's paying for him what you just paid. Maybe you can find a straight team or two out there that really needs his skill set. Again, I would probably have to look to see which team that even is. The funny thing is that it probably would be Utah. In terms of needing a rip protect sector because they don't have one. But you're not getting anything near anywhere near what you paid for them back. So I think because of everything you just laid out, it would probably be a smarter question of like, what could we get for towns to ask that question? I don't think that they're going to do that. I think it would be too big of a concession that they effed up this deal to begin with to even make that deal. And everything they mortgaged on that deal. But I'm not sure where Gobert could go would go, I think it would be more of a question of like, where would tals go? Because the entire league would be interested in that deal if they had the assets to do it. So but I don't know what there is for them to do. I think they're only real responses like wait for towns to get back.

"You could make the argument that Toronto would, but like Toronto's not trading their best guy for him or their best guys for him. Toronto's got link. So maybe play around him, but I also think they kind of thrive on being a little bit of a democracy with that team too. And I also think that they've got a young player that they like having the ball in his hands a lot and Scotty Barnes. You know, the team that came to mind that I started thinking about, I don't think that they would do it, but Dallas would be interesting just because I feel like it would be like a new look Houston with harden and Paul. If you had, I don't think I would do it. Again, I don't think they would do it either. He's coming in saying the rockets with the rockets trade for Trae Young. Well, I mean, they do have a team that I don't think there's anybody on the team that's like so clearly a superstar going to be that maybe you take the gamble. You take the chance. It seemed that already doesn't play much defense. I mean, but that doesn't mean you want to be that way forever. They also made the really hilarious comment on inside the NBA yesterday of like, you know, like what is Houston doing or why are they playing like this? And I think Charles just said women Yama. Which is essentially why. They kind of do look like they're trying to do that. Should we throw out the wizards too? I don't think the wizards, I think the wizards would rather tank. You got to figure out what you're doing with Bradley Beal first, I think. Also, I think shout out to a name that we have not mentioned in a while unless maybe you've done it on one of the pods I was not. Is porzingis has been really really fun. Completely. He's been really good. Good defending the rim too when teams have tried to Shelby also threw out Orlando enough. No, the magic or not. We're not touching the ground. We're not touching the Orlando Magic, okay? Our beautiful, perfect Orlando Magic. We're not touching them now. They've been really even yesterday I was watching them in that game against Memphis and it's just like they've got, I would say three guys right now that it's like and maybe more than that that you look at them and you're like, yo, this team, if they just don't F this up over the next two, three years with Franz Wagner and obviously Bon Carroll, Bon Caro had a 20 point quarter yesterday and just dunking all over the place on a pretty good defense.

"You were kind of expecting him to get hurt. I mean, I remember that first, was it the first season that he had in Phoenix that I was stun I was like, why is this guy not sitting out games? Missing games. And I think he had done pretty much the same thing when he kept Oklahoma City afloat and got them into the playoffs too. But you just kind of expect Chris Paul to miss games like he'd had a lot of injuries over the course of his career. He's getting older and was able to kind of fend off father time for a little bit. But they consistently had the lineups that played the most. So all the stuff we talk about with the Clippers and the pelicans and everybody else in gelling and getting time to develop a rhythm with your lineups. The sons had more of that than anybody, as far as they're starting 5, as far as their foursomes and bridges and Booker and Paul and ayton, they played so many minutes together for years. On some level, almost should have been like law of averages. If you're able to stay healthy for two years with your top guys, 'cause granted, there were other guys, Shara edge and what have you. I think Kaminsky also got hurt at one point or somebody. Granted, you were going to have your starters, you know, get banged up at some point. And it's kind of crazy to think about the whole Crowder thing now, because one, no one's traded for them. Two, the sons have been really banged up at exactly that position between Kim Johnson and obviously Chris Paul, Booker now is the big one for them. An 8 and always misses a little bit of time here and there normally. So it was bound to happen at some point. I mean, number one, you have one of the oldest point guards in the league, but number two, your team had kind of skated by without major injury in anybody. And these granted, you know, what the exception of camp Johnson, none of these were really major necessarily. But it was kind of time for something to happen. You figured that something was going to happen. And now that it has, you're seeing the results of it. The positive thing here is, again, no one's really running away with the west yet. It doesn't mean that the suns aren't going to be a potential factor in the playoffs. But it does all of a sudden look a little bit different when they're struggling with the same things that most teams struggle with. Yeah, they have had a rough go of it with the injuries. As good as luck is they've maybe had the last couple of years. This is a harsh overcorrection that they've had with cam Johnson. Almost everyone except Mikael bridges, one of the league's best Iron Man is miss time. Poor Monty Williams, I can not imagine how stressful that job has been room this year. Soccer is often been called the world's most important least important thing. "And I also kind of trust like I was saying before I'm a little bit jaded by the Derek rose stuff of when he was here in Chicago and the way that people ragged on him when he wasn't playing when he'd been cleared to play. And he'd had the one major injury at that point. He sat out after he was cleared, including a playoff series, which I think was no different than essentially what happened with Jamal Murray last year. It just didn't get as much attention. You know, I don't think that these guys don't want to play. It's Kawhi Leonard, who's won two finals MVPs. You know, clearly at times it's been at least a top three player in this league. If not the best. And I know that there was a time. And I think this tends to happen, I think, more or less people always kind of take the player that just lifted his team to a finals run in the finals win. They always find a way to include that person in the conversation, whether it's stuff right now or Kauai after he won the raptors title. I think people kind of do that or find a way into that conversation, but Kawhi was in that conversation. I don't think he's like all of a sudden lost a competitive fire. Like whether he's a motive or not, he clearly wants to be out there. So if for whatever reason he's not, after he's been cleared, to me what that shouts screams is like, this guy doesn't feel like he doesn't trust his body right now. And stuff I would imagine has to be pretty bad for someone to not trust their body at that point in their career. When they've accomplished that much and rose had done stuff similar to that. And then when he did come back, he hurt himself like ten games, 12 games in. So I trust these MVP caliber guys to know their bodies better than we do as fans. Better than maybe even the team doctors to some extent about what they trust or what they don't trust or maybe if their body is still compromised on some level. So I'm trusting the clippers doctors I'm trusting Kauai to kind of know where he's at enough. For him to be able to make one healthy run, even if it's just a play out run along with Paul George, maybe I'm just hoping that that will be the case, but I do trust at some point. They will have that. I would hope that they can run this back until they get an opportunity to do that. And they have had one playoff run together where they just kind of blew it. Let's be honest too. And I want to say that last night was one of the poorest performances I've seen between the two of them. It was apparently the first time neither one of them had scored ten points. In a game together, but again, they were cut short. So I think that part was interesting too, is that maybe that signals Kauai wants to be out there more. It doesn't surprise me that he would want to be out there more, but maybe that's a sign that, look, I'm going to throw a little bit of caution to the wind and play longer minutes, play more games, even if I'm not feeling great all the time because we need to kind of we're not progressing as a team if I don't play. And maybe that's a realization that he's come to him as well. You know, yeah, on one hand, it's impressive where this team has given all the injuries, but they have now lost four games in a row.

"Do have a group of guys that on any given night, one guy has to be a star as opposed to being a role guy that goes four or 5 possessions without getting I don't know necessarily a touch, but like certainly a shot because you've got Paul George and Kawhi out there. And so I just think it's something where the team probably is going to need more time to gel. I think the team based on what we've seen from them and how inconsistent they are as far as the lineups where I think Stephanie ready or someone on the broadcast yesterday said that they have not had the whole team available for a game, which is kind of jarring to hear it out loud, but also makes total sense with what we've watched, that it's going to be a team that's more susceptible to kind of having these sorts of games. Particularly on the road, particularly in an atmosphere where the altitude is that high. So like you said, my bigger surprise was just at like normally the game gets like you kind of turn your head sideways and squint a little bit and it kind of can get close. And this one just did not ever feel that way. And I'm essentially was like, well, I'm going to stay up and watch inside the NBA, but aside from that, I don't need to watch this closely anymore. And that was a little bit disappointing. But I don't take much from it in terms of contender status. Hell, the clippers are still despite not having had their guys really for a whole game together. All of them are like what one game out in their division. They're right there. I mean, if they were to go on a run and guys were going to stay healthy, it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility that they could even compete to win the conference. I don't think it will happen, but I think the west is right there for the taking. And even if it's not in terms of the regular season, would I be stunned? Absolutely stunned. The clippers were to win the conference. No, I wouldn't. How do you feel about the Kawhi Leonard experience? He's had one of the kind of the stranger careers and, you know, obviously the ACL injury that he had was very bad luck. There's the weird ear in San Antonio, the sprained ankle. So, you know, it's hard to hold all of this against him, it's just been a strange career,
Curry, Warriors cruise to 137-114 win over Timberwolves
"Stephen Curry, Jordan Poole and clay Thompson combined to score 70 points as the warriors routed the Timberwolves one 37 one 14. Curry led Golden State with 25 points of oven rebounds in 8 assists. Pull added 24 off the bench and Thompson had 21 points going 5 of 8 from distance. This is warriors forward draymond green who had 19 points and 11 assists. I think we're starting to put it together and if we can keep building at this rate, you know, we'll be poised for a run pretty soon here. The warriors scored 47 points in the first quarter and had 86 at the half. In the loss, Minnesota's Anthony Edwards scored 26 points and Karl Anthony towns had 21. I'm Ryan Leon

"If Memphis is a sloppy as they were against Minnesota, they're going to be done quick. I think they'll clean some of that up. I think they maybe get caught up a little bit. Again, not to I promise someone trying to hammer a point here, but pace is going to be important here. Memphis wants to get up and down. They want it to be a running game. That sounds super dangerous against the warriors because we know what they can do as an offensive team. But if you watch, the warriors that that they use, that's the single biggest difference I think between the dynasty warriors and the warriors now, is that group was perfectly content to run, run, run all day. This group's a little more. We're going to pick you apart with precision in the half court. We're just going to run our stuff and you're going to find it impossible to defend. They'll run, but it's more opportunistically, where Memphis is, let's go. Getting go. I do think Steven Adams kind of reemerges in this series, probably more in the come on loony minutes than anything else, but I think that'll be important because you want to close down the rim. You want to make sure you're taking care of the boards. But I think Memphis needs to run, run, run, try to try to really get these guys going, try to get them tired, they're an older team, try to really get it so their legs are feeling it in the fourth quarter because you're ran them for three full quarters early on. The grizzlies aren't ready yet for this with a healthy warriors team again. Dad, that's the thing I think we're close. We're on the tipping point. And I think this is going to be one when next year and years beyond. We might point back to that 2022 series when the grizzlies lost, but they were there. Man, they were battling. That was the one where that's where you knew. That's the feel I have on this one. Yeah, agreed. I think they're going to take a page from the wolves series too, and they're going to go at John morant a lot force him to defend and then hopefully that will help. He seems like his energy reserves are limitless, but I think they are going to go after John morant quite a bit on that end of the floor. We'll see how that ultimately looks. They're going to drop him to when he drives. To the rim. They're going to be draymond. Not in dirty ways, but they're just physical and they're going to make you pay if you come inside. Does Steven Adams get minutes in this series? I think so. Like I said, I think against kevon Looney, I think, to make sure you take care of the boards, you limit it because you give the warrior second chances. You're done. They're not going to miss shots the second time around. And they're sneaky good on the offensive glass. I just had it up. Let me re pull it, but they're not in a position where you're like, oh, man, this seems the most dominant offensive. Rebounding team I've seen. There were 18th in the league, but they're sneaky how they get them. They get them and they tend to, I bet if I don't have the ability to pull it right now, but if we look, we would say, holy cow, they really make you pay on converting second chance opportunities. Yeah, absolutely. And so that'll be something to watch there..

"And I think that showed, I think that showed in closing out games. I think Memphis trailed by ten or more in the fourth quarter or at least the second half of three games in this series and then they managed to win all three of those games. So that's obviously a huge for them. And I think you saw the walls get a little panicky down the stretch while there was car Anthony towns took about a 35 foot three pointer at one point with about a minute or so to play. That was just, it was just not a good time place for that shot. They make a lot of sense and he missed by a mile. So yeah, I just went in there and got it done, but the most entertaining series of the first round, I think, without a doubt. There was the one blowout game in there, but other than that, it was close games up and down, a lot of action, a lot of crazy stuff happened, and two fun young teams that you kind of look at those two in the pelicans. And if they can handle things right, that's kind of the future of the Western Conference, I think. With those three teams of, hey, just retain your guys, build the right teams around them. And you can see those three teams doing stuff for years to come in the west. Yeah, absolutely. I really enjoyed this series and not because it was the most beautiful basketball because it certainly was not. But it was just, it was close games, these two teams got after each other. It was super competitive, and then of course you had the comeback element, right? In most of these games, the wolves were happy. They're yelling and screaming and fired up and doing all that kind of stuff. And then come fourth quarter that doubts started to creep in. They start missing shots, they tighten up, and then here's the Memphis Grizzlies, grizzlies just kind of stayed within arms like the entire game stayed right there and then overtook them in the fourth quarter and we saw that game script play out a number of times and credit to the grizzlies for being the team that, you know, as a young team themselves, but having the composure and the experience to ultimately get the job done. And I'm excited to see grizzlies warriors. I think that's going to be a really good series. Yeah, I completely agree. We're going to get to that one in a minute, one thing because I just don't want to lose it is. That sense of how the grizzlies just keep coming is going to be huge for them in a series against the warriors because the warriors, they're not the warriors right there. They're not quite that team, but they're not far off that team either where they can kind of hit you with that avalanche. And the next thing you know, you're down 15 in a three minute period and you're like, what happened? But the grizzlies just, they just keep coming, they just keep working. That's going to be big for them in that series..

There's been talk of Ben Simmons, possibly coming to town and even talk of Karl Anthony towns, getting dealt somewhere. So this is probably a lot to pack into one question, but what are you hearing on the trade rumor front? And what if anything do you think this team needs to do before the February 10th trade deadline? A couple of things Andres, they are absolutely trying to be buyers going into the deadline. They see an opportunity to go up and maybe get as high as the number 6 seed in the west and stay out of the play in tournament altogether. They love the way that starting 5 is playing. It's one of the best net ratings of any starting group in the NBA. And so I think that right now the most realistic option for the Timberwolves is not maybe going out and getting Ben Simmons or miles Turner or a major major piece that comes in and it's like an all star level player to join their core, but maybe to add some size on the bench to add a little more depth a little more shooting a little more playmaking, Harrison Barnes is a name that may have come up. There's a few others out there that they would go that would be maybe considered sort of minor tweaks to the roster, but could make a big difference in their ability to match up against different teams of different sizes and shapes and be competitive. I just think with their assets and where they're at, it's going to be hard for them to pull off a major blockbuster type of a trade, which leads us finally understood the talk about possibly trading towns. So far all indications are that he is happy here in Minnesota. He has said many times throughout this season that this team with his buddy D'angelo Russell with Anthony Edwards with Jared Vanderbilt is one of his favorite teams he's ever played on. It just has a more of the family style atmosphere that he wants. In a group. And so I don't see him asking for a trade anytime soon. The Timberwolves also do not want to trade him. They view Carl Anthony towns and Anthony Edwards as the absolute core of this team that they want to build around for the next several years going forward. So unless something changes dramatically down the stretch into the summer where towns just decides that this is not the place for him, I think he's going to be here and be here for quite a while. You mentioned that the Timberwolves are chasing the succeed in the west. John, you and I are native midwesterners. And as we all know, midwesterners are by nature, optimistic people. So pay us a rosy picture here of how the Timberwolves season could unfold from here. What is the best case scenario look like for this team? Yeah, I think a best case scenario and we talk about as we sketch this out, I would say they have the top end talent to be really competitive in the Western Conference. You also look at the teams around them and the Lakers are a mess. The clippers have a lot of injuries, Denver has a lot of injuries. Dallas has played well. You don't know how they're gonna be. It's a big jumble from like the 5 seed to the 12 seed in the west. And now they really believe with Carl Anthony towns playing the way that he is with the angel Russell getting out of his shooting funk with Anthony Edwards just overall dynamic athleticism that they can start making a move here in the west and pile up some wins and get on a run and climb up the ladder. And so I think if they can stay healthy, knock on wood on earth that they can absolutely look at the 6 seed as a realistic possibility for them. And that is not pie in the sky thinking. That is an attainable goal with the right health, maybe the right trade or two, right before the deadline, they can be right in this thing going into March and April. And bringing it back to Carl Anthony towns. Do you think this new side of him that we've been talking about burying the hatchet with old coaches and teammates, keeping his head for the most part, at least during frustrating games, talking openly about gratitude and things like that is all of that here to stay? I guess we'll just have to see Anders. I think that it makes sense that, as he gets older, he's in his 7th year in the league, he has been around the block. He has been through incredible tragedy. He has also lost a ton of games that maybe you just learn as you grow up. You adjust what you're doing and adjust your outlook if things are not working to try and make a difference. And he is making those efforts to do that. Is that sustainable? You want to see a larger sample size of it before you proclaim any sort of grand evolution. And so I think it's too early to say that he is definitely turned over a new leaf and is a different person from that respect, but I will say that it is clear that he is really putting in a good faith effort to become that. So I think he's still going through that process. I don't think he's quite arrived, but the fact that he is putting himself through that, I think is encouraging to the Timberwolves who have kind of been wanting to see this effort from him and this perspective from him for a couple of years now. "John, you recently talked to Carl Anthony towns about how all of this has, I guess, reshaped his outlook on life, really. And even caused him to bury some hatchets in the process. What did he tell you? It was really interesting in our conversation and it came up kind of unprompted as we were really kind of just trying to get a feel for how he is evolving and how he's persevering through all of the adversity that he has faced. And he is and to his own admission, Ben a sort of fiery volatile sometimes personality on the basketball court. And one thing that he told me is that when he went through losing his mother when he went through COVID himself, he also had a very bad bout with it himself and lost a ton of weight and really had a hard time with it. It changed a little bit of his perspective on how he looks at the game. Basketball used to be very front and center, the most important thing in his life. And he has kind of come back this season, knowing that there's more to life than just what happens on the court. And so what that is done for him is tried to make him more grateful he's told me. Tried to make him more appreciative of the moments that he does have. And so he told me that last season when the Timberwolves were in New York, he pulled Tom thibodeau aside and said, he wanted to move past their problems that they had and sort of patched that relationship. With regard to Jimmy Butler, he was on a podcast that he did in December, saying that he doesn't want to hold that grudge anymore with butler that he was thankful for the way that butler teamed with him to make the playoffs. Thank you, Jimmy, appreciate you. No matter how we saw it, we didn't see eye to eye. All right, we didn't see eye to eye. We don't have to, but guess what? We got the job done on the court. We gave the wolves a chance to be in the playoffs. We did that. Thankful. And he wants to just kind of give people their flowers, as he says, and be on the positive side of life. He does not want to be in the gutter of NBA Twitter, you know, throwing shade, having all sorts of drama. He wants to move past that. Y'all are spreading negativity. I want to spread love. I want to spread to some appreciation. Flowers get flowers more. We losing people every day and I keep talking about trying to spread negativity and all this shit. I hear for that. I hear for that. That's bullshit. Well, personal stuff aside, Carl Anthony towns has also been changing his game on the court this season and John you've watched this guy play up close for years now. What's he doing differently this season? So what you're seeing is he's still shooting the ball from three point range remarkably well. He is scoring in the post with efficiency, but one of the things that is tangible that you can really point to that is different is he is starting to set screens on the perimeter and then roll to the basket for passes to get layups and dunks. And in the past, what he almost always did was set the screen and then pop out behind the three point line for a jump shot. He is kind of like looking at what are the other ways that I can be effective and maybe even try and help this offense take a few steps forward. The biggest thing though on car lengthy towns is much more attentive defensively. I think we've been waiting for him to put in the requisite attention to detail and consistency of effort on that side of the floor for much of his career. He's done it in short little bursts throughout his career, but this is the most sustained level of focus and intensity that he has provided in his entire career. And the wolves have been all season long, a top ten defense because of that. And let me tell you something in Anders to see the Timberwolves in the top ten of defensive efficiency is like we are living in an alternate universe. And so they are bringing an entirely different mindset and approach on that side of the ball and towns is a big part of that. He is the last line of defense. He's blocking shots. He's getting rebounds. He's getting out on the perimeter and bothering people. And so that's made really all the difference when it comes to them being able to pile up some wins and get into the Western Conference playoff picture. You also wrote about Carl Anthony towns performance in a big win over the Knicks on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. Can you walk us through his performance in that game and what was so significant about it? Yeah, that was a performance that really kind of underscored the growth in his game and in his maturity level because he came out of the gates in the first quarter, just dominating. Towns gets around Robinson. Great job not shuffling the feet and being able to finish on the spin. In the second and third quarters, the Knicks got much more physical with him, and that is a case where in the past. Towns would have let that get to the no calls, the bumps and the elbows and the kind of tenacity. Into the paint lot of contacts no whistle walker the other way. Kim has got 5 here in the first two minutes in the second half. Instead, towns kind of just kept his cool. He allowed D'angelo Russell, Anthony Edwards, Jalen Noel to kind of get their shots and kind of keep things going for without forcing himself on the game. And then in the final moments when the wolves absolutely needed a bucket, they went to towns against Julius Randle right at the top of the key. During the wealth offense Edwards packed with the sounds including at the nail cat on the attack off the glass and wood. And the Timberwolves go back in front. That really was the go ahead basket that allowed the wolves to prevail in that game. So just kind of the ability to fight through adversity and then stay in it and be able to make big plays down the stretch. I think just showed kind of how far that he has come in that process of becoming a professional. I stuck to my guns and I just kept playing and playing the game on and lend the gameplay itself out and when it got to the end, just to be mentally prepared for that moment and to not let anything affect me to feel that confident to feel that kind of calm. You know, it just speaks to the growth of me since I was a rookie until now. Now, there are still going to be nights where he doesn't do that. They lost in Atlanta on Wednesday night and he was a little bit out of sorts in that game. And it didn't go well in the third quarter with some referee confrontations and things like that. There are going to be those nights that happen. He understands that it's a work in progress and Chris Finch that head coach has also said that they're going to take two steps forward and they might take one step back, but as long as they keep kind of going down the path, gradually going in the right direction, I think that they feel that they're really going to be in a position and the end of the season to be in the playoffs and to be a factor there. Coming up, the trade rumors, swirling around the Timberwolves, and around towns himself..

"Butler was a powder keg behind the scenes. At one point, in the scrimmage sources says, butler, butler turned to GM Scott late and scream. You bleeping need me. You can't win without me. But the left teammates and coaches largely speechless. And I think that towns lost a lot of respect for tibs in that situation because fibo was a guy who preached accountability who preached all business who preached kind of being there for each other and meanwhile he is letting his prized pupil, the guy that he brought in to change everything, blow everything up. And so at that point, watching tips just get run over by Jimmy Butler. I think Karl Anthony towns to look at this and say, you are bringing embarrassment and drama on this organization. I'm out of this. I'm just gonna stay out of it. John, what would you say that we learned about Carl Anthony towns through all of that drama involving him Jimmy Butler and Tom thibodeau? So I think that there was some people in the league who would say, you know, tibs and Jimmy Butler were trying to show Carl Anthony towns how to be tougher. And I think there is something to that at least that was the method behind their madness. But what we learned from towns is that he was never going to be the guy who got in the gutter and was slinging mud at his teammates at the coaching staff at any of that. What towns did instead was distance himself from the situation and say, look, you're not going to draw me into some kind of a public spitting match. I'm not going to be the one who is contributing to the feeding frenzy kind of in the media and in the court of public opinion about the drama behind the scenes. And so I think some people looked at that and said, you know, come on, Carl, get into the fight. Why are you letting other people dictate the narrative about you? Whereas Carl was saying, hey, the way these guys are conducting themselves is unprofessional. It is just an in defiance of everything I know about what a team is supposed to be, and I'm not going to abide by it. Well, John, what are your recent stories you wrote about how we've been seeing some changes in Carl Anthony towns this season, both on and off the court. And some of those changes seem to be connected to the incredible tragedies that he's lived through recently. First, can you just remind us exactly what this dude has gone through and what that experience has been like for him? Yeah, when people kind of question Karl Anthony towns toughness when they call him soft. You know, you really do shake your head if you really pay attention to what he has been through. She was very uncomfortable. Her lungs were getting worse for cough, was getting worse. She was deterring. He lost his mother, Jacqueline Cruz, to COVID-19 at the very kind of outset of when it was just starting to get its grip on the United States and shut down the NBA. He has lost he says at least 6 other loved ones close one's friends, family members, to COVID-19 over the last couple of years. He has been through the ringer emotionally in a way that few of his teammates have during the last two years..

"Soft right now. But could that reputation now be changing? Today, the athletics John Krasinski on how towns has been elevating his game and his outlook on life. And why that could take the Timberwolves to the next level. From wondering in the athletic, I'm under kelto. It's Friday, January 21st, and this is the lead. Doctor Krasinski, welcome back to the lead. It's good to be back on earth. Thanks for having me. So John, as I was prepping for this interview last night, I was looking at timber wolf stats in recent years. And I have to say, I knew this team has been pretty bad for a while, but I didn't realize that they've only made the playoffs once in the past 17 years. And when they did make the playoffs in 2018, they lost in the first round four games to one, which means Minnesota fans have literally seen one playoff win in 17 years. So my question is, with this team now squarely in the playoff picture and miles ahead of where it was last season, is there some buzz forming around them in the twin cities? There is some buzz oners and it's been a very pleasant surprise, I think, for Timberwolves fans who are used to the worst case scenario unfolding. They're used to seeing teams really just kind of come out and find inventive new ways to lose. And to send them home, brokenhearted. This year, I think that they have a much better chemistry than we're used to seeing with these timber wolves and they're on track for a roughly 41 win season. Now, a lot of markets around the league might say, what's the big deal about a 500 season? They've only had two of those in the last 17 years. And so you can pretty much hang a banner for something like that, just with the progress that they've made. All right, well, John, we wanted to pick your brain today about the guy that Timberwolves have been building around ever since they drafted him. Number one overall back in 2015, Karl Anthony towns. I alluded to this already in the intro a bit. But from your perspective, John, what has been the overarching narrative around this guy during his career? Sure, it's been a complicated narrative and there's in terms of he is one of the very best offensive players in the NBA. Towns drills the Trevor talents and he is three triples for towns tonight. He is supremely gifted as a 7 foot three point shooting, put the ball on the floor and get to the basket type of a player who can hurt you in so many ways. The chance for the end one. Such a great a strong move decisive move, but that's been the problem for Karl Anthony towns so far in his career is that all of that talent and all of the statistical production that he has brought forth in 6 plus years in the league has not brought the winds with it. And I think that he has unfairly gotten a lot of the blame for that in terms of being dubbed a stat stuffer and not a winner, but really when you look at it, this is a franchise problem in terms of not surrounding him with enough talent to be competitive in the Western Conference. He has had one player in his 7 years who made the all star team the year prior to joining him and that's Jimmy Butler. And so I do think that he certainly needs to be better in terms of leadership in terms of helping to raise the game of teammates around him. But when you look at the revolving door of general managers of head coaches, and of teammates, he just has not been put in a position to succeed either. Karl Anthony towns spent the first few years of his career playing under Tom thibodeau. And I think it's fair to say that the relationship was a bit rocky. Can you remind us what the main tension was between those two and how that tension played out during their time together? So remember Anders in 2015, Carl and Thompson drafted number one overall by flip Saunders. Before Karl Anthony towns even played in a game in the NBA, flip Saunders died. Just two days after it was announced that he would be missing the upcoming season while battling cancer. Minnesota Timberwolves head coach flip Saunders has passed away. Saunders was also a team president and part owner of the Timberwolves. That really set the organization into this tailspin, where for Carl a few times rookie season, he played under an interim head coach and Sam Mitchell, and then they brought in Tom fibo to basically be the Taskmaster who helped a very young team at the time. Karl Anthony towns, Andrew Wiggins, Zach lavine, tried to expedite that learning curve and that growth process and get them into the playoffs and become a contender in the Western Conference. You hear him talk about defense and the work and he's going to be a guy that's going to make you guys work. I know you're not afraid of work. How do you think that's going to go over in the locker room? I mean, it's going to make us better. Obviously, working hard always makes our own better. So the only thing that sharpens iron is iron, so I think we're on the right path. And you know, from the early stages of the marriage between Carl Anthony towns, Andrew Wiggins, Zach lavine and Tom thibodeaux, it just wasn't clicking. It wasn't ultra combative or anything like that. But in Carl Anthony towns, would he wants in a coach in teammates in an organization is camaraderie is family, a lot of communication. And Tom thibodeau was all business. He just wanted to show up, clock in, go to work and win games and then go home. And so they were just two very, very different personalities with different approaches to being in this league and it just got off to a rocky start and they never really got on the same page. And how did we see that sort of tension between them playing out during their time together? So there was a couple of things that would happen under in terms of watching the marriage kind of disintegrate. And one thing that would happen often is when the Timberwolves would struggle when they would lose a game when the defense wasn't clicking. Carl Anthony towns would often give answers and press conferences about kind of what he did at Kentucky. And so towns would lead heavily on that experience and all the success that he had there and say, what we did at Kentucky was this, and this is how it worked at Kentucky. And that didn't sit well with Tom fibo. There would be veiled sort of comments that he would make in his postgame press conferences about this is in college. The NBA is body on body. It's not, this is in college. It's like when you cut someone's hitting you. You know, that's the, and it's continuous. It's never ending. And until we understand that, you know, that's what separating us right now. And so I think that from that aspect of things a very stubborn and headstrong head coach and a player who really believed that he knew the keys to being successful just were kind of talking past each other often during their time. And then it really fell apart and during the Jimmy Butler trade drama. If you recall, Jimmy Butler requests a trade, just a days before training camp opens in the season, Tom thibodeau declines to honor that request and wants to play through it and hope to convince Jimmy to change his mind and stick around, and in the meantime,.

"Lords of the sky, Trevor, can we put my girlfriend in the master lock? She started to watch the second half with me, and that's when everything fell to pieces. So it's her fault because she started watching the game when the second half started. That's who we're going to blame this whole thing on. And I got to say and learn to this guy. Isn't that if you saw this going down? Isn't that on you partially? If you saw what was happening, shouldn't you have just turned the TV off or something, if that was really the problem here that she started watching the game? Come on, man. Take one for the team there. Bundy said, Trevor, what's with the repeated third repeated failures in the third quarter and the reliance on jump shots so early in the possession. That's what gets me. That's where effort I think becomes a problem and that's where I say there's no excuse. Yes, look, fatigue is a factor and all of that. But when the jump shots aren't going down, what do you need to do? Start going to the basket. Start manufacturing some shot attempts at the free throw line draw some valves. Things of that nature. Now the wolves, they responded, they saw that the Lakers weren't hitting their shots, and they just compacted their defense even further. They just completely sucked into the paint. So that's a factor that we have to. Do we have to add in here? But the bottom line is that the Lakers have this bad habit where they try to shoot themselves out of shooting slumps by continuing to cast away from outside and those shots just never started following. It wasn't like they made water the damn burst next thing. You know, they made 8 of their next ten or something like that. They just never got on track and they never adjusted and started really going to the basket in the third quarter. And we've seen them do that in the past as well, where they fall in love with a jump shot and it comes back to bite them. And here's the thing. We tend to look at offense and defense as two separate entities as though you defend one way and your offense is something completely different. And that's not the case. They are as connected as can be, and you see that in what happened with the wolves. Yeah, the wolves were hitting their shots. They were hitting some shots they probably wouldn't normally, but they were hitting their shots. But why were they getting so many good looks? Part of that was just poor defense by the Lakers, but part of it was also because the Lakers were missing on their end and they're missing on these long jumpers and that's leading to transition baskets for the wolves. Not everything was a fast break, but how many times did we see the Lakers cross matched, where because they're in emergency defending situations, you wind up with a random player defending say Karl Anthony towns, you end up with a small defending him or something like that..

"From karl anthony towns asking out if this down this road And this is the year where that's kind of up in the air like I i don't think that that's in any intention or anything. But it cat is of course very committed to the wolves as right now in his been awesome and i think that's are launching point too because everything hinges around. What cat does this year There's a lot e even as good as he is there. Obviously you know steps you can take it. I think he's he's starting to take over the last year and a half. You really been paying attention. But i know not. Everyone has Attention to to a team as bad as the of band or literally has actually played in the last right off too but I mean yeah. everything's stems defense. We were talking about this the other day and i went back and i watched some of the stuff. I'm loving seacat playing closer to level the screen. I think we saw that for a short stint. When when tom sibito was coaching i made the robert covington trade or no wait was that that was saunders. Still my bad i. It's been so many coaches have changed. It's very hard to keep up with but We've seen it for small stretches and it's works. I think we're at the point where we know. Okay katyn and drop is not always great and part of that too is on the point of attack defense. But where are you out with the defensive changes so far. We're only one game in. But how are you feeling about roster construction-wise in the way that everything's everything's levin just conceptually in your head like going into it where you out with him. Yeah just been a big proponent of like cat camp keep playing the drop. It's not gonna work especially when you have no size next to him so it's been a welcome change for me and i know for a lot of wolves fans i kind of feel the same way..

"But at the same time, that hasn't always been the case. You know, I mean, it seemed to be something that got worse and worse as this season went on. If you go back to previous seasons, he wasn't shooting four shots a game. You know, he was he was comfortable taking those little mid range shots and attacked the basket. He did not seem to want to do that as this season went on, but it's not like that's been the defining factor of his whole grain on Philadelphia was in a similar situation with Markel pool to remember. And wasn't sure what to do. You didn't have anybody of evidence there if you were Philadelphia that showed that he was going to break out of it. He never really put anything forward for them. You know, at least with Simmons, you're in a situation where you're looking at a guy and you're saying, he hadn't always been like this, so he's gonna go somewhere else. He's gonna go to wherever Sacramento or somewhere and he'll be fine. But the 6 and a half time making that case to other teams as they're trying to find the right trade deal here. He's not just going to be fine, Evan..

"And then, you know, you get this shocking news that he's out. You know, whether it's a culture thing is something that's been going around. There's, of course, talk that he had sex with another employee. And then click on that, by the way, because that was, you know, that's part of the athletic article. It's right there in the tweet teasing the article. It was discovered that all right, so okay, so I take it back. I take it back in part because I missed this part. So all that was in the initial tweet that I saw. I guess there have been multiple tweets because this is not the tweet that I saw that I just pulled up. The initial tweet that I saw was he had a consensual intimate relationship with a member of the organization. And I'm thinking, my initial instinct is, I mean, like Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner did that in draft day. They even brought a baby into the world, like who cares? Why is that a story? But all right, so he's married. That's a problem. Obviously, that you can't do. That part, I feel like has not been well publicized. Yeah, but, you know, they've been trying and really, I think with that, they can't really fire somebody necessarily for that. I think rosas would have a lawsuit on his hands. You know, he'd have a reason to come back at the organization..

"He is so wrong. I don't think he realized how how dominant he looks at times out there because he's you can see the humility in him and he certainly I'm trying to take over any game or, you know, check this out and which is really cool. That's exactly what you should do on a team with dream on and And curry about tell you those guys were taking notice, and they're digging the hell out of it. No, Dan In the six games that I've watched, they've only played six games. Have said the same thing to myself when watching Wiseman player he makes a play, and this is meant to be a compliment to him more than the slam on who I'm about to slam. I just go toe say to myself, man. Minnesota's dumb How do you not take that guy? What? What? What? What did you not see it when E can't even get on. How do you not take that guy? It's so painfully obvious that he is perspective. Edwards. But he's clearly was the better of the two players. How do you not take that guy? Yeah. I mean, the only reason is they had Karl Anthony towns really been that I've never been that high on imagery very counted. There s O. Especially right now. You're wondering that I think at the time with the draft, you know towns is really he's a talented guy. I could I could see that I could that be the only reason though you would take Weissman over Edwards, Um, you know, and that that's just work to the workers benefit. They got so lucky that it was Minnesota ahead of them, and not like a half dozen other teams. Or, um or you know, Edwards is is totally confident. He's brought a lot of swagger but his shot and then there's been way off. He hasn't been playing, you know, with all the big minutes. He's got a what He's got a lot a long way to go, too.
