"Hostage is wrong. And we would urge them respectfully to reconsider when Democrats take control of the house today. They plan to pass legislation to reopen the government legislation which will likely go nowhere in the Republican led Senate. I'm Terry Moore in Washington, we're coming up on twenty one till the hour a new congress today. Correspondent Karen Keva tells us what to expect? You hear new congress new power dynamic on Capitol Hill after two years of Republican control of the White House. The Senate and the house the Democrats take control of the lower chamber of congress and Nancy Pelosi. He said to take back this week goes gap while Lucy a familiar face, many of her democratic rank and file are not a young diverse freshman classes as a result of the November midterms Blue Wave. That includes the youngest woman ever elected to congress. The first native American women elected to congress and the first Muslim women to serve between Democrats and Republicans more women will be in congress than ever before House Democrats lead to use their new power for a number of investigations of President Trump's finances and conduct of current and past cabinet members. Republicans meanwhile, boosted their majority in the US Senate where new faces include veteran political hands like former Florida governor, Rick Scott. Twenty twelve presidential nominee Mitt Romney elected Utah who preceded his swearing in. With a Washington Post op Ed sharply critical President Trump's conduct in office twenty one thousand nine hundred. We'll also be a lot about twenty twenty today. I announced exploratory committee for president of the United States on Monday, Massachusetts, Senator Elizabeth Warren took the first steps toward a twenty twenty bid one of quite a few hill. Democrats eyeing splitting the next year between early primary states in the halls of congress in Washington. I'm Karen Kiefer. Now at twenty before the hour, here's jimbohannon at high noon today, an appropriate time, given the theme of that old movie. The congress will be convening the new congress as per the twentieth amendment of the constitution section to the congress shall assemble. At least once in every year, and such meetings shall begin at noon on the third day of January. Let's say shall by law appointed different day. They didn't. And so here we go. We're talking with Julie. Grace Russky Capitol Hill reporter at the hill dot com. The definitive voice of the Capitol Hill, she covers the house of representatives. So for openers we will have a speaker Nancy Pelosi now that requires that, you get two hundred eighteen votes, and is there at this juncture any question left about that. I mean, I suppose you could still hear hear some rumblings from the left side of the democratic caucus. But I haven't heard much now not a betting girl. But if I had to put money on it, I would put my money on her take tomorrow. I think there'll be a handful of detractors on the floor make campaign promises, they would not. But I think she whole cruise through that vote. All right. Very good wants Democrats have control of the congress. Then what comes next to one thing that we've heard about was be at approach to try and cut. Bringing about an end if you will to the government shutdown by means of two separate appropriations cracks all appropriations bills must begin in the house per the constitution. One would be sort of a bunch of of of different appropriations and the other would have to do with homeland security of the the border wall. Do you see that two pronged approach as being acceptable to Republicans who control the Senate? As of right now. Senator McConnell's office who said that there is a chance for green. Any legislation that the president won't agree to sign and the president has been pretty that. He is not open to the Pelosi approach of the two prong. Cr and legislative package there. So I think right now that's pretty dead in the water and the upper chamber now than looking at possible areas of agreement certainly the president has been talking about this for sometime months ago. He talked about this with the Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer about possibly some kind of immigration deal. His wall in exchange for some form of amnesty for the dreamers. And now just in the past few days. I've heard that the president is talking about this again, do you see any likelihood that such a deal could be struck and ultimately become law? Congress is a wholly struggled on immigration to come to consensus. We saw was publicans control in both chambers. They had difficulty getting a building could to the house whether or not be dynamical change with Democrats charge now and their push for doc guide publicans controlling the Senate. I mean, it's a possibility. But I think it's gonna. Uphill battle for them to be able to try and. Come to a consensus there. All right. Let's look at infrastructure where both parties, and quite frankly, the president to have not shall we say put the the government deficit and debt at at a top priority level you spend money around. You spread it around from district to district and state to state and everybody enjoys some little pet project and our kids and our grandkids got to pay for it, yours always some lip service about the debt. But frankly, we know how far that goes nobody ever actually range it in that would seem like a fertile area for some kind of agreement. I think that it's definitely something that Republicans and Democrats could agree on. I think the deficit is going to be a problem. I know initially when Republicans had keystone, I control the house, they were their plans do healthcare tax reform, and then infrastructure and then healthcare intact. Former kind of blind to offset each other, cost wise. Kind of going to be the next to the plan there. But I think after tax reform, I'm not sure funding wise if they're going to end up getting fat. But I do think it is an area that both Republicans and Democrats to come together. And work something out there. What about something regarding health care, for example, obviously Republicans are way past being able to repeal and replace ObamaCare. Democrats you're not gonna get Medicare funding for everybody. So that takes us right back to basically patching up a system on which many people now rely even if you're a Republican who wants to eventually repeal and replace doesn't have to be repaired between at least for the next two years for the people who depend on it. I think they don't healthcare was definitely such a huge issue in the midterms. And part of the reason why Republicans lost the houses, I think constituents frustration with the lack of action on trying to fix the healthcare system. So. I mean, I think it's going to be tough for both chambers come together. But I think probably both in their best interest to try and figure out a plan. That includes the system, I think healthcare is is a whole it's a it's a tough topic for lawmakers to kind of come together on a lot of details a lot of complicated. So it'll be interesting to see how that pans out. Beauty grace Brodsky Capitol Hill reporter at the hill dot com.
