"As well steve. Welcome to the show. Hi thank you so much guy Bill you mentioned the prospect of having to resettle A billion climate refugees. Where do you think the cities of the future will be and should should. We begin focusing less on remediating current infrastructure and more starting to build cities. Well it's a really important question and this there's sort of two sides at the moment to the climate fight one is adapting to that which we can no longer prevent so the sea level is definitely going up and probably way by a lot new york city as you know has started trying to build a seawall that will protect at least lower manhattan of from sea level rise. It's expensive but it's necessary and there's going to be much more of that it's necessary up but what we have to along with adapting to that which we can no longer prevent. We desperately have to prevent that to which there is no real adaptation so if the sea level goes up you know not one meter but four five six seven meters. Then you don't get to have new york city are indeed most of the other cities of the world anymore because our cities tend to be built along the coastline. And so it's worth almost anything to try and arrest the rise in temperature before you know that kind of dislocation becomes mandatory. That's why as i say job. One between now and twenty thirty is to replace as much carbon generation as we can with clean energy. And then we'll be able to take better stock of where we are and what we're you know. What sacrifices Those who come after us. We're gonna have to make our job right now. Is to limit the scale. That by making that transition as fast as possible speed. Is the question here you know. This is the first real time limited problem that we've ever faced and and winning slowly is just another former losing. That's terrifying prospect though bell because we have we haven't we haven't even one slowly for decades now absolutely. That's why it's a good thing that over the last ten years we've seen this great boom in engineering and we've seen this great boom activism and if those two things can unite then they have a chance of changing the political equation fast enough to let us make some progress. There's not any guarantee that's going to happen. We don't know what the outcome is. But it's desperately desperately that's why people are going to jail. That's why people are are spending their lives trying to get this shift to happen. Let's go to richard in manhattan richard. Welcome to the show Thank you very much I have two questions for bill. First of all the thank you very much revenue. Doing because it's about time. Somebody shook us up and got us active active wherever you call it active. I'm a bicyclist. I'm over sixty and i'm gonna ride a bicycle from manhattan to northern ontario canada for my mother's ninetieth birthday if i'll get into an airplane and and like you did talk about that talk about transportation alternatives bike route's rail trails commuting to work and alternate ways. Secondly i'm an architect. And i'm really interested in passive solar design which is an international organization. That's training architects engineers builders manufacturers of building products in designing net. Zero your high-rise buildings and houses so that we generate zero carbon footprint in each of these house. I'd like to hear what you have to say about each of their. Let's talk first about houses as we build new ones. There's no excuse for producing housing construction of any kind anymore. That doesn't get as close to zero missions as possible. The technology is there affordable usable. The real challenge sadly is that we already have one hundred million buildings in this country. And we're going to have to retrofit. Does that's why that local ninety seven is so crucial on transportation richards. Exactly right we need to make all of our cities Much more amenable to people who wanna get around on the power of their muscles or on an e bike or whatever it is. Some parts of the world really used the pandemic to do that. All of a sudden paris is one of the most bike friendly cities on planet New york seems to be struggling with the concept of how fast you can build out bike lanes and stuff. We don't have time for this to take decades while we go. You know adjudicate every single block of the city one by one. We really need some vision here in getting things to happen at speed. It's why it's good that there are groups like transportation alternatives I follow doug gordon in the city whose bike advocacy has been terrific This is not this is not stuff that's beyond our it just means we're really miss case. It just means standing up to the cars and saying In new york city and other cities we're going to let other people have some priority for once journalists and activists bill mckibben. His new organization is called third. Act targeting people over sixty bill. Thank you so much for this conversation. What a pleasure cayenne. Very good to have you back in the studio man. "Just spend all that money that they apparently can't spend making a pro phone actually black instead on turning the entire state into your office have interoffice trams and trains air. We go the big empty cupertino spaceship. Yes that's that's an you know that. I think that's a lot of employers are encountering during this whole period. Is they look at what we spent all this money on this building on this office space and we're done everybody in it because but we want people in it because we spend all the money right. Yeah it's sort of a microcosm of every is everywhere every bit. Well it's really a macrocosm because it's it's apple well okay but than the entire world still. It's almost there. But i yeah i thought it was a thought. It was a solid event. It did feel a little ru- i think the beginning felt a little rush to me. I don't know why. Maybe because i wasn't expecting the ipads the time and so it caught off guard but we we were still ready. I just didn't expect them. Yeah i want to. I want to publicly Shout out the entire team at. "Because not only were there for a lot of us. Apple watch surprises but there were ipad. There were no air pots. So let's let's just dive in. We'll go in order we'll start with With ipads which we were not at all expecting to karen what did apple announce with the ipads. Well i apple announced that there's gonna be a new regular base model ipad We call it the ipad nine. Apple's not releasing numbers anymore but It's very similar to the previous generation on the form factors pretty similar. We the chip is bumped up from twelve to thirteen bionic The it has true tone display now. Which i feel like a lot of people may not know what that is but trittin display basically the colors on the screen automatically adjust to the lighting where you are to give you more of a realistic book. So what you're looking at looks like more like what it's supposed to look like trek. It really is. It's kind of subtle But when you see it you know when you compare a device with it without it it it is really cool. It almost makes it A little paper. Yeah yeah no And it has the. There's a big upgrade to the front camera. It's now twelve mega pixels which is like real countless like a real camera now basically And it has center stage which is really close to the all. The camera will follow you around. If you're moving around so. I think this is really good. News for people who are using their ipad for remote learning or you know zooming facetime ing all the things that people do these days. I'm at of course it's still price right for educators. A lot of schools have whole classroom sets of of ipads or multiple ipads in the school. So the educators can get them under three hundred bucks which is still which is nice. Start at three twenty nine for everybody else. So it's a good. It's really good entry level ipad. A nice little irritative upgrade Don't that was very cool. And of course the big star of the show is the little tiny the star many which i had no intention of buying new ipad minus only. It's only i think two years old. But i just up with this little mini when they said pro flowers like all right. That's it take my money. So i d- they got me so they they totally changed. The form factor. It's basically like a scaled-down ipad air now so it's got air stage and improved camera and chip and all that stuff so I haven't even got it yet. And i'm i'm in love. I want to give you a shout. Karen you're absolutely right. They moved the volume buttons rather than make a smaller pencil out. Now the pencil. Is i think all just almost exactly as tall as the is the ipad mini. Yeah it's almost there. Yeah it's pretty close i. I'm looking at the the cases and the ones that have like cut out for the pencil and they're just like this just the tiniest bit on each side laws protecting the corner exactly but it's still fit. So yeah it's all good. And and it's the footprint of the i i've had many as not substantially bigger if at all and i don't have the exact dimensions in front of me but the screen is substantially larger. Because they felt. Yeah just just about half an inch. Yeah we're just pretty substantial for small screen like that and the vessels are small. They got rid of the chin and the forehead and the home button. And we're bringing it into modern times so yeah sterry call. That is i. I couldn't resist either karen. I mean i. I don't so and we might. We might get into this a little later. I don't like many of the colors of this false device. Lineup i do. I think i have comments about the colors. Yeah has a lot of comments pink enough. I wish i could have pink iphone. Thirteen tro that. All i wanted. That's we were so we'll get into that exactly when when we talk about the iphone and just a little bit but what are we. What are we thinking. These ipads the the baseline ipad is is what it is. But it's also you know that's a decent upgraded eight thirteen chip. It's basically basically an iphone. Se in ipad form. Now but the many. I think karen i think you're right. The star of the show looks great. And it's got you. Sbc connectivity which shiites. i see means it'll charge a bit faster. It is expensive to which i think is a lot for. That's that's kind of an noxious but it does. It does follow dollars more. It's a lot more does. Follow the same pattern as the as the ipad. Air where it's base price rose by one hundred dollars this year. It's still a hundred dollars cheaper than an air which has historically been the case for the and pro or aaron mini anyway. Yeah so can you you. You're getting one on one. Christine has for me my money. Some yeah yeah. We're gonna talk about you your tb in a bit. Yeah that sounded really weird but So so the the other feature forgot to mention it is. It does have five g. on the cellular models. Yeah that's right. That's something cool thing fun and i really liked the colors. The the the the rose rose golden. Just the gray in the goal sent some nice. I resent the name. Starlight will say that. I don't know why we had to go with starlight. In what color exactly is it. It will start one you midnight. Yeah i think pretty clear. Starving nights better is starlight as like an off-white like a beigey. Sort of yellowy right. No you don't think color star then. Midnight is like like a dark chris. I think our next topic really gives us more of a chance to talk about color. And that is the apple watch. Oh boy howdy. Let's talk about watch in surprise. It looks like an apple. Watches always looked just better so disappointed. You are the that that meam. My my disappointment is immeasurable. And my yes were you. Were you planning to got an apple. Why was if it was the new redesign. Because i actually was. I was intrigued by the redesign of the flight edges. She was digging and that would have been enough. That would have been enough for you to buy it just flat edges and the and the mint green color that i kept seeing. Yeah except less. It wasn't a mid green now. Oh it's horrible green right now. I mean some people may love that. It's not for me. Yeah you heard that you hear that here. I everyone karen freeman says. It's objectively horrible and now i shouldn't say that because somebody might love. That car should absolutely enjoy it. It's it's more along the lines. Of like i feel the midnight. Green of the iphone eleven. It's very yeah. I know there were a lot of people that did like like midnight. Green and i mean i look kind of like the green on this one but i think it depends on the light lighting. Your here's my here's my thing about the colors this year with the exception of the red across the board so apple watch and regular thirteen which looks great this year. The red looks fantastic I feel like the colors are more muted. This year they went with more muted Definitely all the blue the blues not as vibrant which was disappointing winter in the apple. Watch watch and phone. I thought i love the blues across the board. They're all different. But i think all the the watch the ipad the The fo the both of the iphone mont not the bills are the iphone models. I love all those blows where they're all different though yet. We're going to get into this a little bit when we talk about iphones but yeah i. I'm not biggest fan. We're not. I'm not the biggest fan of the blue on the watch. Certainly but though that read like it i pod wouldn't by a any of the color watches. Just because i i wear it every day so it has to go with every single outfit. You have so many bands. I took so you can still see the case. Yeah watch so yeah. Well you're doing you. The band's you wear regularly have like metal lugs okay and i can. I can see we're on on a colorful more colorful watch that that would be classy. i don't i don't think so. I have loves all different colors. It might have like rose. Goldberg might have the stainless steel apple. Watch but i have Logs that are rose gold. If it's a rose gold band or a color like green. I have like a green. It's like green plastic logs on a green band. I don't think it matters as long as it matches something like the logs..

"Twenty twenty one. Today we're talking about apple's latest controversial Child safety initiative that was announced yesterday. And we're also going to dive into some rumors about the rapidly approaching. Fall product. rollout Joining me today as always. I'm more contributor karen freeman. Hey carrot and joining us today as one of our special guests is. I'm more writers stephen work. Hey steven hello. I'm definitely like the least like the the lesser of the special guest. Let's joining as or other special guests this week. My friend in yours rene ritchie of. I believe it's pronounced youtube dot comb back to h. All right great to be here. It's great to. It's great to have you on the show rene because yeah. Yeah it's it's like having someone back from from for a nice family visit and it's it's good that you hear this week rene because i mean it was a fairly quiet week for news is fairly low key. We had some rumors we had some. You know maybe smaller. Mac pro coming down the line and then yesterday happened. I feel i'm saying more and more tom. Because apple came out with this These new child safety protections. Well the they announced these new child safety protections that will be coming with the major software updates. Let's say next month just to be safe. iowa's fifteen ipad. I was fifteen and mac. Os monterey so rene wanted to have you on the show to just kind of walk us through some of that. What exactly is going on here. All right so there's three separate features that are coming. Us only At first us only ios fifteen ipad s. fifteen the first one. The idea of it is if you are enrolled as a child like you have a device that has parental controls on it. And you get an explicit image. It will warn you that the images explicit. It's using on device machine learning to determine what an explicit images. Don't make any of your impossible burger jokes. Because i'm sure they've heard them. You know all all all over. Already pop up warnings. This might be an explicit image. Do you want to see anyway and you can choose. Yes or no if you're under the age of thirteen and it's enabled if you choose. Yes it's going to say. Are you really sure because we're going to alert your parents that you're getting this image And then you can still say yes. Sure it's literally a picture of a hot dog from the last baseball game. We'll get off my back apple and the same thing happens if you send an image if you go to send it. It'll say this looks like a sexually. Explicit image are you sure you want to send it And then you can say yes and if you're under the age of thirteen and again your parents have enforced at permission. It will say. are you really sure. Because we're gonna tell your parents and then you can say yes or no and it's it's some people have looked at this as as oh it's breaking to factor sorry end to end encryption. It's not in that you end. Encryption is about disclosure. it's like nobody who shouldn't be seeing. The message is seeing the message. If you choose to send a message to somebody. You're opting them in to seeing that message. And this is the same thing you or your legal guardian. Gets it aside if someone else gets to see messages under certain circumstances so doesn't have to be enrolled in this. You'll know for sure if you are enrolled nest. Nobody can enroll you in this without your knowledge of it. You may not like it if you're under the age of thirteen exists but it's there and apples intending this to prevent grooming some people. Say why don't you do is for adults. Nobody wants to get those eggplant picks like all of us. Have this as an option. And they're not commenting on that yet. But it's it's meant to stop grooming people sending images to children to Eventually scale up to greater abuse as the first one the second one is the database which is a database of known images that involve and if we can actually say what stands for on youtube or that's instant quarantine on youtube site so it's an image of a database of the absolute worst images images that illegal to possess a lot of stuff. You can search for like a lot of stuff. Might be like disreputable. You might have ethical qualms this stuff is illegal to possess again. It's us only the us database. And what apple is doing is my guest. My gut is that apple. Does not apple's not legally allowed to have this stuff on their servers. They do not want this stuff on their servers but they don't want to scan are photos on their servers to find it and get rid of it which is what every other tech company does facebook microsoft microsoft invented. The i forget what it's called something. Dna photo dna technology ten years ago to solve this problem. They've been using it ever since. Apple's is very similar in terms of the albums being but facebook twitter google. Everybody does this apple. Doesn't want to do it on their service because they'd have to actually go through all our photos so they decided to do with this incredibly intricate kind of clever approach where they take the database. They converted to what they call neural hash. So the database is already has. You don't actually have the pictures you have hashes which is a mathematical representation of the picture and apple wraps in rural hash to make just one more level abstracted because nobody wants everyone. Some people. Were afraid that you're getting these pictures on your device that applicant match against them. Nobody's getting any cease sam on their device. You're getting the neural hashes. And what those neural hashes do is only if and when you upload to to. I cloud photos. If you don't use. I call photos if you're not uploading anything doesn't affect you in the least if you're uploading your images. I cloud photos as they're being uploaded apple..

"Mag safe battery pack on. We've got some interesting new rumors about some features that are coming to the iphone and possibly even the ipad mini later this year. And we're going to want to talk about those because this is the more show joining me as always is more contributor karen freeman. Hey karen and today is our special guest. Is i'm more news writer stephen warrick. Hey steven hello all right so another we come and gone and we talked about it a lot last week but it's finally in our hands. The mexico battery pack is here. And it's washed out on my display. But that's okay for those who are just listening. I am holding up to the camera. Apple's new mexico battery pack. This is one. I bought myself. They this this seems like something. they had. Ready to go minor. I've this one arrived wednesday. I already kind of love it But yeah max battery pack. And i wanted to show everybody so i still have the iphone twelve. Many here i wanted. Show everybody who's watching How this how this looks on an f. And he said here's the twelve many. Here's the battery. Pack just goes on as low iphone backpack so it does hang off the bottom. We'll no that's just me. It's just me it's suzanne era. That is more user error than anything else. Because it doesn't it doesn't like tightly grip onto the thing you can kind of like bit moves around a little second. You make it so it's definitely not hanging off the bottom. Okay so it it goes right up against the Okay so now. It looks even yeah right up against the camera module right right. It's right below on us. Okay gotcha yeah it just screams but it fits seems it does fed but it's thick it's thicker it's the and so one of the thing it but that's the one of the things that's interesting about it especially on the many. I don't find this as much on the it shirt. I mean adds a bunch of haft too many but it doesn't feel like it doesn't feel it's not super. The package isn't super heavy now. And it actually. It's it's it's still easy to grip might little more to hang on. I could see how like might make holding your phone here. Yeah yeah but it does feel that way This secure on the back. It's not you know the the the monk safe wallet with the wiggle and the it is feels more secure on the back in the mac safe while it like it like it doesn't i don't feel like it's gonna get chopped off when i put it in my pocket. That's that's for sure and i should. I guess that was the many this is on the twelfth pro so also the standard size iphone this is that still thicker obviously looks a lot more natural. It does look a little more natural. Yeah it's funny. It almost looks like a i. Guess the most silly on the iphone twelve many. But that's As we've we've kind of discussed a lot previously. Not that's probably the iphone that you would want for the most because it has the smallest bots or it does fit better than other brand that i have so you know that you can remove the i have the movie one but the mafia also has like three times as much juice. Is it plastic cry. Isn't it joe but is is really plastic. It's weird it feels co you mean outside here. Yeah yeah that you would see the faces the phone. It feels almost like a softer plastic right like a silicone. Almost like a like a hard silicone but almost a softer plastic. Do you know what i mean. Does it feel like the silicone case. No it doesn't feel. Like i mean the the back part that actually touches the phone does because that's what's there Because i assumed it would feel like you know the the tree cases old. I just assumed it. It'd be kind of silicon valley rubber. So i was really surprised when i i saw saw people when it was plastic. It definitely slides in and out of the pocket. Easier us good. Yeah anyone who's watching live if you have questions feel free to pop them in the comments. Truly what are the cause. Someone has already noted. Joe what charge times like in your experience. So they're like they're fairly slow. It's like you're on a five watt. Yep i've contractor five watts yeah However if you plug the if you plug the battery pack in and just kinda. Use it as maxine charter. It goes the full fifteen watts. Yeah did i let like your phone in. Well that's just it isn't it is you. Don't have to if you've got if you've already got your iphone on the battery and it's charging the battery and like you come home. You can just plug the battery and and it's already on a charter and in terms of capacity like what have you found with with usage like how much extra juice is it worth Because i've read like as low as like no. I didn't fifty percent. I won't charge any of the iphone. Twelve two full no well. So here's the thing from speaks on us a little. I'm going to speak on this little. Because part of iowa's fourteen point seven. That came out. I believe on. Monday was adding compatibility to the to the iphone. Twelve line for this battery. Pack now for those not watching. I am showing my screen on my iphone. Twelve many which is running iowa's fourteen point seven and then i'm putting the battery pack on does its little maximum thing and it also has a little readout for the battery. Pack itself now if you go into the phone and go to the battery which it see it'll properly show the battery griff and the batteries charged. However if i do the same thing on iowa fifteen point or fifteen beta three. Let's see if we can do this properly now. I only yet thinks it's a cable in fact if you go to the battery which it i don't have the big battery which it so i'll just pull it up in the widget picker go to the big witch it in that second entry looks at ups and it still shows the battery level but it shows it as a cable. So that is the sort of compatible. Andy does actually. It charges a device that isn't on iowa's fourteen point seven nine percent. Yeah i guess it will take a little bit more time in and testing and regular. And i'm sure they'll be you know software quirks kind of like you've said in in terms of capacity we have the review and from from christie live on. I'm all and i know. The thing she said was.

"I more contributed karen freeman. Hey you karen and joining us today. Again is our special guest. I'm a writer. Look filipovic handbook. Welcome back so it's been a long week for all of us but Bed of a bit of a commerce section of the week early on and then we. We've had some some interesting rumors pop up as well as a A very very superstitious survey. That's how i'm going to phrase it so let's start there. let's start with iphone. Thirteen or iphone not thirteen. We the iphone. We're not gonna we will not name. Maybe this is the maybe this is the year apple finally switched to finally switches to just like iphone and then year because New survey is out A seventy four percent of people Say they don't want their next iphone to be called the iphone thirteen. The i found that shall not be named exactly. I just i. I have a lot of thoughts on this. Most of them are not charitable. I don't hold. I don't hold a lot of A hold a lot of superstitions myself and third. the number. Thirteen certainly isn't one of them. Yeah i mean. I'm not superstitious. Either but i do. I do think that at some point. It is kind of silly to keep naming the iphones this way. The nothing else named this way in apple's ecosystem so why not just have it be the iphone. The many found pro the iphone pro. Max would whatever and then just attach your to it. Exactly exactly unofficially. I think were were getting in the realm where it's a little little ridiculous you know i mean i o s i think. Ios numbers are one thing sir. Let's just software versions have been around forever. It's you know people going to walk into future apple stores and say yes. I'd like the iphone. Nine hundred thirty two. Yeah they have to abandon it eventually. Or whatever replaces the iphone. Whatever brain chip. We've got by the time that thirty two bit far in the future but even like twenty seven. I don't know it is important to remember that like you know the number thirteen pass a lot of significance in certain cultures. And it's not all just superstitious though. It's true superstition but some of it but there are other numbers that have cultural significance in in a bad way also in certain cultures. So we've pan sauce right over those numbers already. So totally and i mean for i understand. Yeah i couldn't. I couldn't care less. What the next. Iphones called the can. I think they start calling him. Apple phone right. Just the apple with the symbol. Yeah you're not writing correctly. musty right. It with the symbol which is not great for our content management system. But here we are. Yeah i mean i've actually. I'm not saying the numbers are the best way to do it. But i actually appreciate that. There is some sort of sequence because as somebody who writes about the iphone a lot. It is very much easier to identify what. I'm writing about rather than having to always stick the year on the end of it. Which if you see what we've done on. I'm more with you know a lot of it's just i it's kind of conventionally done. A lot of the apple sites is like for example with macbooks. Books obviously don't have a number Usually we just put the year in parentheses. People can understand right macbook. We're talking about especially when you're comparing different macbooks from different years for different specs and like i've always enjoyed the iphone. Always sort of has a name that makes sense at least in some sort of biological order. But i agree like eventually. The the numbers will become untenable. And it'll just be like like what are we doing at this point right. Don't get me started on. Mac book pro thirteen inch early twenty twenty macbook pro thirteen inch late. Twenty twenty i. Yeah it is a nightmare. This is true. Luke brings up a very good point. Yeah but but but that's for us. We're we're minority. In december of things the majority of people have that issue. But i selfishly. I like the idea that they that they continue to make it very easy to understand which iphone you know. You're writing about it from getting about. Yeah from a content organization for yeah for sure but ultimately. I don't think it really matters that much people are getting very emotional about it. And i think it's just not that important. Yeah i mean. They broke the mold when they went with the iphone x. Which i still call the acts. Even i know it was the ten i mean. They broke the mold before that. Either the original iphone three g s right or the three g. I you know there was a whole weird naming thing there and then again with where they skipped the nine and went right to ten but it was x. Right i keep forgetting we skip the nine we ask. There is the ten as- there have been a number of s years. Were was another whole generation of iphone really but they call it s instead will remember remember. The last year there was a lot of thought that maybe they'd call the iphone. Se the iphone nine. 'cause skip guys. That would be interesting way too confusing. That would have been a nightmare. That would have been nightmare talking because just the numbers don't really match up anyway lead. The numbers are sort of meaningless. Maybe there's a compromise solution where we can. We can not. Do you know iphone year but we can move on from the numbers. Maybe if we just maybe if we started with greek letters so started with the iphone alpha and the iphone beta in the iphone game. What are the. But we're going to run out letter. Variants come on the of variant of iphone os like animal names or something iphone. The iphone gabe pro. Max yes but we'll still run out of greek letters though. Then we might say what. Chips in hieroglyphs. We just keep getting more pretentious but egyptian. Hieroglyphs don't have verbal. You can't necessarily say them. Are you going to describe graph. It's a little. I with every time you said you said pictographs karen emoji. There we go. Oh i i could not name the iphone and then you know the s variant you so like this one could be you know. The last year's iphone could've been like the iphone heart and this year could have been like the iphone blue heart purple heart or something like that last year Last year is definitely should have been the.
