"Good morning karen. Many good morning motorcycle goes by my house. Let's do it again. Monica morning again. I didn't hear okay motorcycles. Coming back. I live on a very busy street. How you. I am so good. I'm so glad you're doing this this morning i <hes>. I know a little bit about tara. i've done. I did a reading. I'm going to tell you this story. My own personal story. I have a friend whose wife does this. And when i first heard about it. I thought like a lot of people this is not just fanciful nonsense and you know like a fun. Little aside thing. I i didn't believe and i decided well i don't i'm not going to disbelieve. Believe until i see something. So this is when i was doing stand up a lot and it was my career and one of the cards. I'll never forget this card came up and it was a guy <hes>. Jumping off of a cliff into the dark. it was. it was a career card for whatever reason. I don't know how this works. But and she looked up at me and she said you're going to have a really big career change. I had not thought about it. i'd had not explored it. I didn't have any intention of doing that. I went what are you talking about. So i was sure at that point that it was nonsense. Well several months later this was you know back. Twenty five years ago. The bottom kind of fell out of the standup scene. And i was making a lot less money and there were outlets gigs. And i <hes>. I sent an email to tom. Arnold who was getting a tv show called the jackie. Thomas show and asked him for a job. I had never written on a sitcom in my life. I i wrote jokes. So i call them up. Which something. That's not something i ever did. It was just out of desperation for income and he said no i my. I'm staffed up but you can start on roseanne in three weeks. So that was my first job as a tv writer and i remember thinking that card was right. I in this. This is less than six months later. There's your card there. I see the card is the fool card. She might have had a different deck but it is literally taking the leap into something else. It's the it's the first in the last card of the deck. It's there's a lot to be said for this stuff. I mean maybe they're just strong tendencies and you can. Obviously i could have not called the guy not taken the job. I could have done that. I suppose that was my free choice at that point but the fact that that possibility entered my brain that moment because she sat it and it just it just rested there in the back. I never thought about it until circumstances changed. So i know you're doing a lot of readings. I'm doing a lot of talking. And i wanna hear. That's okay i can give you a good nation that will make you feel a little scientifically better about the cards because <hes> in there's i almost you know there's an effect that i wonder happens to because ladies come to me a lot that can't get pregnant and i will pull immediately like to pregnancy cards and she'll say no we've been trying for twenty years and i go. I don't know the problem is it's right here literally a call in a month. You're not gonna believe it. I'm pregnant happens all the time. In sometimes i wonder if subconsciously. I've given them permission to let it happen but the tero which is i'm sort of a terrible historian all the <hes>. Symbols the colors what they mean. I studied the cards for probably thirty years. I still get up every day and find a new book. Because i love them that much. But they're actually they call the archetypes that are that young talked about and the dream are sort of the same as a dream arc. Typeset that you would <hes>. You would actually be dreaming this same thing. In other words it all means the same thing. The high priestess would mean mystery in your dreams. So they're not just sort of cards that come out of nowhere. They sort of been built on the subconscious and psychology for many many years or vice versa. The cards built psychology but <hes>. It's it is coming from something. They they used to say. Somebody told the story that gypsies that didn't speak the same language used to carry different decks with them so they could come up to a different tribe in they could say showed him a picture of the medicine. Man showed him the picture of the magician so they could communicate through them but every time someone tries to say this is where they were developed. They find another car deck back further <hes>. They also <hes>. Are the know people that. Get weird about lulu. This is where our regular paint playing debt comes from. This is also where chest house room.

"That one though this is the second black jeopardy skit. So in it, Chadwick Bozeman was playing his Black Panther character to shower. Oh, this is so excited all the way from what Kinda is the. A Big Fun of this program. And to Chow is getting all his answers wrong in jeopardy because the game is based on Black American idioms, which he doesn't get at all because duck he's from Kanda. But at the last minute, he's asked about someone named Karen bringing her potato salad to his cookout before answer if you questions this woman Karen is Caucasian. Yes. Something tells me that I should say. Only with a tiny bit of. RICA NO PATTERNS She probably add something unnecessary like raisin I know. Something tells me that I should say. Oh. Hell. No. Keep the. Senate tickets. Look maybe it's because Iran in Puerto, Rican and both sides of me puts raisins and current things. Raisins in potato salad doesn't actually sound that bad. Me I'm just saying or Senator Your recipes we the reasons in whatever. But anyway. Meredith. Says this moment and a few others like it is when the nation kind of got it too and I think that's one of those moments that you had crossover from. This is an internal joke among black people to wow. This is something that can be consumed by pop culture. So after that skit and a few other social media incidents. Everybody knew what had Karen was the point of was for black people to have a way of talking about white women without their knowledge but the point of Karen is that you can publicly call those women out for their behavior. So Karen Beck and call the COPS and so given name to that phenomenon gives people blackpool particular some of the power back at least to ensure that there are some social consequences and you know that may or may not turn into legal ones. We know it did in the case of Cooper which brings us to Karen as a slur you may have seen that some British. Won't carry raced because they say a sexist and classes slur. Sure Whatever Yeah Merida's Kinda Eugene. Having any of that to me, it just points to another unfortunate characteristic of Karen. That is that she is only able to see the world from her worldview. She doesn't think for a moment about what this might mean to another person. And that right there is classic Karen Behavior it is. But Charene, Merrill says they're still hope she says instead of white women getting defensive about being called Karen's they could try to honestly examine their motives for their behavior and if they find themselves tempted to do something Karen Ish like calling the police on a little girl who's selling bottled water on a hot day, they should ask themselves what is it that you're trying to accomplish Is that something that can be accomplished by you simply walking away from the situation? Is that something that can be accomplished by reconsidering what's actually happening and maybe seeing it from someone else's perspective is something that can be accomplished by simply minding your business. Imagine that. All right time for one more break. When I play cousins at coast which come back, they will look at what the next evolutionary step of Karen. Might be. Be. "That's a segment that aired on the CBS Sunday morning show at the end of. June And I I want to say that. In a racial context, there are some very concrete reasons that we don't really have a word for male Karen's. The twitter is trying as an charity. Huddle pointed out to me. White women are the social workers and teachers and neighbors and shoppers that are typically in a position to surveilled black people in the first place. While the Williams said, men had been socialized not to complain not to call the cops, and barring that to take matters into their own hands, but the other thing I want to say is that when I see some of the quibbling and Griping about Karen, I'm reminded of that moment right after trump's election when there were all these pieces based on the fact that a majority of white women had voted for him with headlines, like what is wrong with white women and white women sold out the world. As a white woman, who did not vote for Donald Trump I remember having this little twinge. Not all white women twinge or I just didn't want to be lumped in with this group, but this feeling of being lumped in of being misjudged of not being seen as an individual of being equated to and held accountable for people. You don't know who may or may not anything like you besides some demographic details isn't experience so many Americans have so much more frequently for so many less legitimate reasons and so much more damaging and consequential effect than a straight white woman like me and vern example of all of this. I WANNA turn to one more name. One white people have applied to black women. To supervise my supervisor. What is your name? Johnson. Big Focus surprise. That's a clip from the movie crash. The infamously bad Oscar, winning unsolvable film about racism from two thousand and four Matt Dillon Co starred as the man. You just heard a racist cop, and the reaction to the name Shaniqua is supposed to be shorthand for his bigotry. Distinctively black names have existed since the nineteenth century and enslavement, but the names that were distinctively blackberry biblical names like Isaiah and names related to enslavement and emancipation, like human and master are different from the ones that are distinctive now. Those names which include names like Shaniqua began to appear in the nineteen sixties and seventies as an expression of black cultural empowerment, but we will. We're starting a new cultural identity one that was less tied Eurocentrism enslavement, but these names given to get some distance from racist white culture, had been effectively punished by white culture four that difference and you can see that with Shaniqua which cracked the top five hundred most popular names in America in the late nineteen eighty s and early nineteen ninety s, and has often been used as a straight up. In Salt. TRAYVON! Logan is a professor of economics at Ohio. State, university and he's one of the authors of the study about the long history of distinctively black names that I paraphrased minute ago. Yes, so these names like should need-we have linguistic structure is specific to these new names that are popular among African Americans your remember the very popular character on the Martin TV show. China is referring here to Chanina. The neighbor on Martin Lawrence is TV show. was also played by Martin. Parents. What did you watch? All of our. If. It isn't little miss attitude. Always all there's also a class dimension to this as well and aim should need-we. Shimane A IS A. Working Class African American woman so when I hear people use these names in pejoratives. They're invoking a lot of things that are consistent with say what welfare queens and other sorts of negative stereotypes of African American women that combined race, class and gender. You can hear a white man who's rolling black lives matter outside the two thousand sixteen. Republican National Convention using Shaniqua to imply all of these things when he hurls it at a black woman who has taken issue with his racism. This sort of incident is just the beginning when it comes to the racism directed at black names. The most famous study documenting this was done by Marian. Bertrand and deal Mullah Nathan out of Harvard in which I submitted job applications with both statistically white names like emily, and Greg and statistically black names like Lakisha and Jamal. They found that resumes. The. White names called back fifty percent more often, and were the equivalent of eight years of work, experience, or to put it the other way. Having a black name was the equivalent of having eight years of work. Experience just disregarded, and this is only the most well-known study like this so very interesting study by Francis a WHO is at Umass Boston looked at whether guidance counselors recommend. AP Calculus to students, and what they found was when they had a black female name, the guidance counselors. I'm elise likely to recommend black girls for AP. Calculus just based upon their name. Having certain names in this country comes with real concrete punitive consequences far beyond just being made fun of which is pretty much all that's happening to Cairns right now, and if even that seems painful to some people that's kind of the point. The Karen is supposed to hurt because that's what she does to others. As much as we joke about her the things she does that make her a Karen can be lethal. That's why black people have always given this type of woman a codename because they needed to talk about the specific threat. She presents to black lice. What's really different about the Karen? Is that now? White people know this code to. That's the change. This episode is really tracing. The Karen has been here all along, but it's only recently that many white people are beginning to recognize her, and to take seriously what it means for black people to encounter her. So instead of trying to shrug off to aside to get past her, instead of focusing on how the term can be misused, trying to pass the blame or asking why white men aren't being called out to make sure you're not being a Karen and that no one else is either because that is the only way whatever name she goes by, were ever really going to be rid of.

"Though I've been thinking about it i. think the reason why Karen is having a moment is because. A lot of entitlement in the age of Covid April Williams again. If you're in the me, that says like. On wants to speak to the manager of Corona virus. She wants the country to be reopened. In the months since mid March twenty, twenty, when America began shutting down to contend with Cova, there has been a seemingly endless stream of white people trying to enforce their own personal set of rules. Karen Sean out in trader Joe's. She does not have a mass and somebody you leave. And See. Well, most of these have been aggressively lax and skeptical about public health protections like the woman in Tennessee. Who brandished assigned saying sacrifice the week reopen Tennessee. Some have been overly strict. Ready called the neighborhood. Watch on anyone not wearing a mask that anyone more often than not being a person of color. All of these Cova. Karen's or more than just a scourge to service workers, though they were a problem for everyone, and they weren't just ruining people's days. They're potentially endangering and trying to control their lives. Corona virus in other words took the rhetoric Karen, and expanded her scope, her habitat or notoriety, and her villainy for many white people covert Karen. It was a kind of crash course in the Karen Won. Won they only undertook as they realized, the Karen also posed a threat to them, but once they were attending to the type, even they could be made to see that the Karen was a far bigger problem for people of Color which brings us to the incident on May. Twenty, fifth, twenty, twenty, when the Karen as we now know her racist Karen fully explodes into the mainstream consciousness lose. Don't come close. please. Please call the cops. Please call the clamps. african-american men threatening my life. Please tell them whatever you like. That's a snippet of video recorded by Christopher Cooper, a black band bird-watching central park when he asked a white woman named Amy Cooper to leash your dog and she called the police on him. The video was posted to twitter by Christopher Cooper's sister along with the following text. Oh, when Karen, take a walk with their dogs in someone like my brother, an avid burder politely asks her to put her dog on the leash. This video, just the latest to show white people using the police as a weapon became a huge news story and Amy Cooper became widely known as the Central Park Karen. The Central Park Karen was named by Black Twitter, working off Christopher Cooper sisters initial tweet as a nickname. It's almost in the style of Barbecue Becky or permit Patty, but it's not quite because it's not exactly alliterative. That would be something more like Central Park Cynthia or dog walking Debbie, but at this point mid cove it with Karen's so much in the Zeitgeist you just had to call a Karen Karen and the epithet pulled everything together. Central Park Karen is when. When the entitlement of the CAN I speak to your manager Karen and Cova Karen is explicitly connected to the racial violence of calling the authorities. It's a rival just the day before the nationwide protests sparked by George. Wade's death began in Minneapolis further underscored what was at stake when a Karen called the cops at this point, the dominant feature of the Karen became that of racial oppressor, and with that the modern Karen the Karen as we now know her had arrived. But that's not all. There is to the Karen working on this episode. There were new pieces of Karen News every single day there were endless examples of escalating Karen behavior like a white couple known on twitter as Karen and Ken Standing Barefoot in front of their mansion, pointing guns at protestors and a woman in Michigan who pulled a gun on a black woman in a parking lot. Amy Cooper lost her job and was charged with filing a false report A. A potential law was introduced in San Francisco. Outlawing racially motivated nine one one calls called the Karen Act which starts with a C.. N. stands for caution against racially exploited non emergencies, and that's the concrete stuff. There have also been so many arguments about the term. Is it too cute? Is it a slur? Is it misogynist? What about all the Karens who aren't white ladies? I'm calling Karunakaran if you will, but let's be careful. We're not, racism with sexism. Discount..

"So, the pernicious and privileged white woman has gone by many different names over the years, but it's only recently that she's become known as a Karen and now I WANNA get into how that happened. Karen is a Danish shortening of the name of Catherine. It was a top ten American girl's name for almost all of the nineteen fifties and sixties peaking at number three in one, thousand, nine, hundred, sixty, five. This puts Karen from the height of the name's popularity in their fifties now and just hearing the name. Most Americans get that a name is handy as a shorthand because it brings the living breathing person into view, and it can also be handy because names tend to go in generations, and so often the name immediately summons not only type, but their age Jonah quarter as a professor at Columbia and the host of this. This late language PODCAST LEXICON, valley it's very articulate way of communicating. You don't have to define it even often. You couldn't define it and yet. The two of you were talking about the same thing. Say a name to someone, and they will have a feeling about a vibe, and that's by a lot of things, personal experience, knee-jerk judgments and anthropological sense of its demographics and pop culture and pop culture has been priming the Karen for years. I had an epiphany here. It is right here. There was one person in every group of friends that nobody fucking likes isn't a bit. The comedian Dane Cook's two thousand five comedy special retaliation. Example. Karen is always adduced back. Has a Karen, and she's always a bag of dish. When, she's not around just. God Care and she such a Deuce Bay. Until she up and you're like. The Karen, this joke doesn't have any specific traits or any particular personality. She just sucks. If names are like a stew of associations, this Dane Cook joke is a leading ingredient in the Karen Stu, also in the do the Karen of will and grace who is funny, but beyond entitled one of the Lesser Mean Girls in mean girls played by Amanda safe read, maybe even the way Ray Liotta says Karen over and over and that one scene in Goodfellas. Two. Dollars, I need that money. That's all we supposed. Money that we had Karen, and then into all of this plops one more Karen. So I'll read it. I want to say around three to four years ago. You had a user Asia Romano is a digital cultural reporter for Fox. He actually had the now deleted usery count. Stock Underscore you underscore Karen? So Reddit user fuck you, Karen. Basically made his entire account about a shooting on his ex wife named Karen and he kind of got to be known for it in, he got repressing these really long elaborate, really angry stories about carried the original posts along with the account have been deleted, but for a couple years this user would pop up in various sub writes the term for the theme discussion boards that make up read it and go on impassioned over the top performance of harangues about his supposed supposedly awful ex-wife. These posts turned into Asia. Calls read it Lor because they became part of read more read. It did what it often does. Another reading is your made some bread devoted to. Just this guy, sort of an in joke site, and so he made the suck. You Karen the suburb. It became a place or read it. Users shared memes and rifts and jokes about the Karen lampooning her, and in the process, fleshing her out I want to underscore that they weren't just sharing examples of Karen behavior. They were creating a character a detailed in joke with a very specific set of characteristics. She's antitax. She's usually a Christian. She's always lied. She might have multiple kids. She's one of. Of those parents super super super like hybrid, tense about how her children need to be cared for in Oh. She's probably on a diet. There is something there's a strand of the me that I don't really understand. That's associated with her buying box wine this Karen call her read it Karen is a very specific variation on the Karen Karen's now are not necessarily Christians or MOMS or conservative or anti or into drinking box wine, but the version of the Karen developed on read. It was all of those things. Coming as it does out of a sub at based on a man's rants about his ex wife, there was a real misogynistic streak to this characterization, but the sub it also did hone in one detail at a time on an idea of the Karen as a suburban affluent white mother, narcissistic in Ohio privilege, and oddly enough you can see that really clearly in her most notorious trait, her haircut. Remember, what Karen Rider and we spoke with at the beginning of this episode said that it is haircut with the Chunky.

"In the decades after Little Richard released this song, the term miss an faded from the vernacular and another name with a related, though not identical connotation took its place Oh. My God becky. Look at heart bet. So big. In one thousand, nine, hundred to sir mix lots hit, baby got back and owed to plump post terriers, the name Becky became widely known shorthand for a white girl, lurking around black people and culture, even though just decades before becky hadn't necessarily been white at all does so many different songs and the history of black music about a Dr Adams is a music, historian and writer. The becky and the songs was usually blessed. There's the lead belly. He did a song called Dome Background Nineteen. Thirty five did a song cold begging deemed she was a gambling. Gal and Becky supposed to be black in his song. He will Amnon. When all money and you? Other songs back in nineteen hundred nineteen twenties. There will always songs about becky. Becky was always of a different ethnicity. Often, becky was Jewish becky being short for the Old Testament name Rebecca there were lots of becky's early vaudeville recordings. Fanny, Brice, the famous Jewish showgirl saying Becky is back in the ballet in nineteen, twenty two that same year. Julian rose released Becky the Spanish dancer in this song. Becky isn't actually Spanish. She's Jewish, but she's learning to dance like a Spanish dancer. Each! Spanning ideas. Becky in other words started out as an ethnic thing but overtime. That association faded away off. Rebecca got more and more popular throughout the twentieth century, becoming a top twenty name in the nineteen seventies and eighties. At the same time coming out of the civil rights movement and the black power movement, black naming conventions were changing and Rebecca and so becky became increasingly white so much so by the nineteen nineties. Becky could become the quintessential white girl named in baby got back even though in a funny wrinkle. It's not actually becky. In the song's intro. I like big. Exactly. Right, so you can imagine all the becky dancing to the song. And Charity Hutley again. Becky is exactly that type broken. Not Ironically dances community got back railing around. Like someone who used the word twerk a lot like after she learned it from Miley Cyrus and. Use Me use me. Average grew be. Safe Becky is not quite a Karen. She's younger and she's more clueless, but she's not harmless either. The becky is a white girl who is racially obtuse. Who doesn't get it and part of what she doesn't get? Is that just her presence in black spaces can be dangerous to black people and particularly black men. There's more threatening aspect of the. becky would get a very public airing in another soft. He Better Caldbeck you with good hair, this lyric from the beyond Song, sorry offer, two thousand sixteen album lemonade was widely understood to refer to the other woman, and beyond as marriage, though this woman was a woman of color herself. The lyric still accentuated the BECKY's nefarious side. Becky is just more insisted on cultural appropriation. A black people on particular narrative black men s that you may five, Holzer, which you may be practiced for some you know. Exotic vacation model was still go all the way back to slavery to admit so. That's like you get your say talking about that with the good hair, right? They have no interest in Oakland best, blackness. FANTASIZING In, the beyond, say Song. Becky is a menace in the private sphere wrecking marriages, but in April of two thousand eighteen showed come something even more dangerous. A would be killer who operates in public by making use of the violent power of the state in other words approach Karen. Yeah, I'd like to report that on the legally using charcoal grill like it's about with immediately, so that goes nobody. More children are has pillow CACTUS. And a person season the real. I need a description won't racer to. African Americans. That's a clip from a nine one one call placed by a white woman over two hours, harassed a black family, picnicking and grilling in a park, and Oakland California, calling the police on them multiple times. The woman who did this is named Jennifer Sheltie, but you became widely known on the Internet as Barbecue Becky an image of salty. Her cell phone was photo, shopped into a variety of settings like the march on Washington so it looked like she was calling the cops on Martin Luther King, junior, or Obama or the Jeffersons in another image, a picture of Solti was accompanied by the taxed. Hello, I'd like to report black people minding their own business. Are you just was very fascinated with the barbecue? Becky tweets able Williams is an assistant professor at the University of Michigan in the Communications and media department and a fellow. At Harvard, honestly I thought they were hilarious. Got Lots of chuckles from him. Looking at it just started as like a casual twitter user. Well I say casual, but also I research twitter and social media so. Nothing is ever terribly casual. Since two thousand eighteen April has been studying the particular alliterative twitter memes, the Barbecue Becky birthd-, she now has a data set of over eighty nine thousand tweets, making fun of not just barbecue back, but also permit Patty, a white woman who called the police on a black girl selling water, who you heard earlier in the episode and Corner Store Caroline a white woman who called the cops on year old boy. She falsely accused of groping her. Her Anna Bodega and golf cart, gale and road, rage, Randy, and so many more so with each no meme. Most of the time it's a white woman who is using her power to release black bodies in public spaces. It wasn't just immune to be funny, but people were actually of extending the movement and away a in particular matter movement because they were saying look, these Karen's are calling the police on black people wonder why people keep getting murdered by the police. Naming and mocking and meaning these women and very occasional man may be funny, but it's not a joke. It's calling attention to what is still happening and has been happening for centuries, white women, weaponising their privilege and marshalling the power of the STA- to quote protect themselves and their preferences from people of Color even though it's the white women who represent the much more, grievous, an immediate threat. That's the really important thing to understand about this type of me. The way less important part one. That's relevant to this particular podcast. Is that through two thousand, eighteen and nineteen, the women in these memes were not primarily being called Karen's Barak was the first one who sort of started the trend, and then from then on the subsequent women, even though they were given a particular nickname like Patti or bus Raider Brenda for example, were still referred to as Becky's, so people would say oh, we have another becky and it's permit Patty, right or we have another becky and it's best Burger Brenda so people were calling. Becky's is at the time, and I think the shift from Becca care. It's really interesting I. Do too, and that's why I wanNA. Head next..

"Those who say I'm going to address this just this one time on this very special episode. There are those who say I get this feedback occasion. Yeah, I subtly played to the left on this show, and it's true I do a little. There are people out there who think of me as a conservative Republican fire-breathing, right winger, guess playing to the left, and even using that adjective fire-breathing, but no I am as I've often said a cranky liberal, but you know you should know in the next year and a half. You're going to see two books from me. Those of you who think that I play to the left one of them is about. About cursing, and that's going to be the funny one, but the other book that I'm writing will make anybody left of centers toes curl so for those conservatives among you. Who Listen to this show. You will see that. I understand all sides of the political spectrum. That said Karen is just a game and I think it's an okay one. In our time, there has to be room for settling scores to an extent as long as somebody at some point allows that the scores have been settled. That can be a problem definitely, but I can say that with Karen. We're not there yet. That is what I think for whatever it's worth of the Karen Business. Well you know this has been a fun show. And so to play it out. Let's use some music that I think of as just fun. This is horace silver. This is some of my favorite jazz. This is one of his later albums. He did two or three in the early nineties that are kind of weird and wonderful. This is from Pencil, pack and Papa and this is red beans and rice, the words, a kind of lame and in a good way I. Don't know why, but this song has always been an earworm I recommend listening to the whole thing once it goes from the head into the improvisation. That's a lot of fun. It's very written, but it's also just very good. Music's is red beans and rice..

"With this is described Alan Charlton as exploitive and vindictive. A man who preyed upon weak and vulnerable people people like Karen Price. One of the witnesses who came forward was twenty four year old Idris Ali. Ali told police than Nineteen eighty-one he had acted as a pimp in central square where he would procure. Young Girls Allen Charlton's parties at his basement flat. One of those girls was Karen Price and he had been in Trenton Slat when she was killed according to Ali just two months after Karen ran away from the children's home. Charlton told Karen that he wanted to take lewd photographs of her but Karen refused. Charlton flew into a rage. He reaped Karen and strangled her to death then. He asked me to help him wrap her body in the carpet. He didn't later Charlton buried her. Audie Idris Lee was promptly arrested for his involvement in Karen. Prices murder at the heart of the case against Charlton and Ali was the witness. Testimony of a young woman identified in court records. Only as di. "The logic of the whole thing is important and also just suspense and build up an timing kind of like comedy the setup and the payoff. I think if you get that right right then then you're in a good position I think but you really have to pay off if you set up and it's difficult because it's hard to make things actually scary when you see them Uh of course and also with horror too because a lot of it's not high budget like maybe you didn't you couldn't that shot that day for like the prosthetics for the monster monster in all of those things. Yeah it's it's difficult. It was hard in my short film because I have a little bit of cheeky monster. There the credits as cheeky monster. was that next time next time next. What are you excited excited about right now? Like what is what is making you happy. How are you staying fulfilled in your crazy nonstop work schedule good question and what is it? I think just being creative is probably it good like I do that and then I go out and then I make more stuff and then I go and that's it that's pretty much it and I could do that for the rest of my life and I'd be like yeah. I did that right. That's that's really healthy. Because so many people I think get so caught up in the pursuit of the next thing or keeping this or not losing that. I mean it's all that kind of ego stuff that you referenced before that can really topple people in people that seemingly have everything they just seem like dead inside an empty. Well yeah because that's that's not the thing that's GonNa make you happy. You don't realize that at the time you know but when you get it the goalposts move all the time so if you get it it's like what's the next thing yeah. I don't think anyone really ever sits back and goes like okay. Did it done you know. There's always something more and so therefore that's not where the happiness comes from. It's hard to you. It's hard to see it because I don't think anyone ever feels different. Especially when your circumstances changed I don't think people they still feel like that same person. Yeah when they were first starting starting out. It's true and everything's temporary like the high of achieving something or getting something isn't GonNa last forever temporary high right. That's how did you learned that there was a new or no. I think I've just been watching youtube interviews with tech moguls. Also unlike seeing themselves something for a billion dollars which is obviously like a lot of people's dream and then they say that they're happy for about four days and then it goes back to normal normal right because it's the new reality so it is is really about the embracing the process stuff for just or just figuring out you know so you think it's yeah I think personally for me. It's like sort of deciding the I am enough worthy of all of these things without needing validation outside of myself. Oh my God. That's incredible. I mean that's the that is dumb most valuable lesson anyone I think could ever learn. Yeah I'm working on it. I haven't fully achieved that and I think we all need to work on that consistently. Well no but yeah I mean you look back at the history of philosophy there. They were philosophers who were old men who are like. I'm still trying to you know like I don't think it's ever. I wonder if maybe sometimes we have this false cinematic idea events like the goalpost like I'm going to cross it and it's all going to be on. Yeah no it's never you always have to remind yourself. Yeah you know for the for always raise. I know it's yeah it's interesting to sort of reach that place of total happiness and I don't know if anyone really does do they. I don't know because I don't think people chase happiness like a drug. Yeah like it's some sort of a spike that you're supposed to feel rather than just a state of of like peace and contentment. Yeah those are better words I think oh they are because happiness. You can't beat out all the time. Because emotions come in waves they spike and then they drop and of course they do because we're humans bright but to be content and at peace says another thing and I think that we can strive towards that that is just such an incredible. It's just an incredible thing to know. It makes me happy that you know that because you know it does because I just such a great I consider you a friend just great person and so inspiring all the different stuff that you do and it makes me happy that you're happy like it makes me happy. You're at a place where not only is going well. But you're but you as a person as Karen are really not asking to speak to the manager like you've we know now I'm always going to ask the goddamn manager. You see what is good. Yeah definitely and you know. I'm not exempt from those moments where I'm like. I wish I achieved this by now. Like I have those moments but then I come back from them because I can remember what we just talked about it right right right right right is do you. Do you read any philosophy or do you read a psychology essays. You do. Yeah that's all I read. Is there a site that you like or particular essays that you enjoy the quality to date. Yeah just have reconvened on Google just looking into conditions or all sorts of weird things. That's fantastic fantastic. Yeah it's really really interesting and helpful for acting well it also I would imagine for the storytelling to motivation character. Motivations that's where it really comes into play so besides people looking to external sources to find happiness rather than figuring out how to just be happy with themselves. What are what are some of the psychological optical trends of the day that you're noticing like in today's society? I don't know I don't know if I can think of any specific a to today. I mean we have social media which is certainly having an effect on yeah. I don't know if it's particularly different to what we already do as humans. We're looking for validation from people right but but on a weird messed up scale. Well Yeah it's just amplified. I don't know that it's like very different and like I think it's the same as wanting to be popular in high school right but it's just on a different platform and there's more people involved. Yeah I can't even imagine being a kid today okay and I was talking to a friend of mine about who has a bit of a social media following and I was like I can't when you were a kid it was challenging enough to just sort of fit into your immediate community but in that community there were it was just a fitting into a smaller group where you're trying to figure out your place in a smaller room and now it's like you're competing with the world. A fake heightened version of the world's. Yeah I mean the comparison aspect of it is is scary because you're looking at people's lives that aren't necessarily real and you're comparing it to your own life. Vinit can suddenly make everything seem much more miserable than it might have had not seen on social media right. So that's the new affect. I think I hope someday you are comfortable optimal enough to give a talk about stuff like that because I really yeah because I think people would listen to you and I think people would really I think I think you could affect the world in very positive ways as if you've heard some of these ideas because I think people do listen to you and kids should idea ted talk you could do a tedtalk. That'd be really scary but I'm into it okay. You can talk. Yeah Karen Time Talk. That's another branch of my studio but it is. It is helpful helpful. The people and I think it's when when people have healthy perspectives on especially when celebrities unhealthy perspectives. On this stuff. Yeah 'cause you 'cause kids look to people like you and they go oh she must have everything figured out in the ceiling handle. I remember everything figured out but these are some of the things that I also worry about X. Y. Z.. I just think people would probably go like okay. Maybe I am enough and I don't need to worry about all that. Yeah I would love it if I could make someone feel like that. That'd be really cool. What's next you're let's see you're here today? Are you doing anything else today. or You have one more phone interview. And then I'm done done for the day the day for the week. What and then more more press next week then back to Scotland Than Your Own Mexico are you is there is it more? US Presser you have to go to another country you're just in the US. Los Angeles Fantastic pastic. Is there anything else you WanNa promote deserve anything else. Call of the wild with a dog and Harrison. Ford is coming out at at the end of February. And it's really good fit the dog before Harrison Ford. You have to. It's funnier that way. It even means dog frenzies and Harrison. Ford he'd he was on the podcast like six seven seven years ago and it was rough. It was rough it was because he was like I blame me but he was sort of like me why because he was I think he used to kind of do the singer he was sort of like he kinda play. This character of sort of grumpy guy. I you know. Just talk with people but maybe there was a little bit of that too and I just I just devolved into the fandom so fat I mean we've had some form of why blaming gap. I mean. It's like some people it's like the first time I got to work with a muppet and it was like how could I not. I just like tear up because it's like it's so reelect dealer into your childhood. Yeah and that was him and it was just like I just kind of melted melted down. I mean it wasn't a disaster. I go home and listen to that. You're fine if you're going to. It's IT'S A it's a linear meltdown. And but but my feeling was like look I should have been more emotionally prepared like. He's going to give me his time which is very valuable. It's like riding a horse. I should have been able to ride that horse that I got on in those moments. I don't know it was it was. I was found girling over him when I was shooting the movie I think he is. Something happened in because he had that he had the plane crash scare. I talked to him about. You did well after that. I noticed like when I would see him on panels does it COMECON. He had anything to do with it but when he came back for the Force Awakens panel he was genuinely touched. He seemed genuinely happy to A. B. Their new perspective perspective. He was. He seemed excited to talk about star. Wars like he seemed appreciative of the fans navy at changed him. I wonder if it did. I mean it's a scary thing to happen. I'm sure it must have. Yeah I can't believe you talked about it. Yeah I tried to make jokes about it. You did yeah because I I don't know why I thought that would be funny. God then he didn't find it. Funny I you know where you're like. Why Hi why have I done that Harrison? For sometimes there's nervous energy and you kind of want to you. Know he was talking about it in kind of casual way which led me to believe..
