Coronavirus Wreaks Havoc On The Global Shipping Industry

"San Francisco is of course home to a very busy port. The vessels that travel in and out of there being hit hard the corona virus is wreaking havoc on the entire global shipping industry. And this is all coming on. The back of a protracted trade war with China Amperes. Jackie Northam reports an bright blue crane clamps onto a shipping container sitting on a flatbed truck effortlessly picks it up sore sixty feet in the air and stacks it on top of five other containers. Toast the new crane-operator he's very slow. Visually it swam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Joe Harris a spokesman for the Port Virginia in Norfolk says the cranes are part of a new eight hundred million dollar expansion here. The third busiest port on the east coast. There's a lot of moving parts here so many pieces to it. There there are no incidental moves. Everything is planned. It's truly like a like a watch but the corona virus has upended the precision planning here and at other ports throughout the US and around the world the global supply chain was interrupted when Beijing imposed travel restrictions China Manufacturing slowed. The docks were quiet. Chinese exports ground to a halt as a result. Cargo ships are being idled in dozens of sailings have been cancelled says John Reinhardt. The CEO of the Port of Virginia. There've been over one hundred twenty ships that we're gonNA come to the United States. That have been blanked. So that means they're not sailing for the periods of late. February march and April. You could be talking anywhere from fifteen to thirty percent of the freight that normally flows in and out of this country will not be happening. This slowdown is affecting shipping. Companies Large and small worldwide Maersk. The world's biggest container ship operator warned its earnings would be lower basil. Karadzic's CEO of new york-based Crisis Marine advisers says. The past decade has not been good for shipowners. The demand has been growing at a slower rate than at dawn inch supply. So they're all the shipowners right now. Do not have much money to spare. Disruption is having a severe knock on effect for other parts of the shipping industry says Western Lebar. Ceo of the Harbour Trucking Association in Long Beach California. It's a bad time for everybody. There were three hundred teamster drivers that were laid off just last week because of the inability to have enough rate for them to move. We've seen employee. Drivers take a voluntary reduction hours for some of our companies as much as twenty five to fifty percent of ours well over half of Chinese exports to the US are unloaded in California and the Port of Los Angeles. Long Beach is the busiest complex in the country. Labar says one in every five jobs in Long Beach is directly or indirectly related to the port. Andy says businesses are down sixty to seventy percent since the beginning of February. But Lebar says there is a flicker of hope. The Corona virus is starting to ease up in China. We're hearing many of our customers. That manufacturing is starting to pick back up in China that the ports in China especially the main large port. Shanghai is now getting back to full operations and the hope is that in a week or two maybe we can start to dig ourselves out of this and get back to full operations but Labar says there is a challenge ahead to consider whether the corona virus spreading across the US will affect port operations here as it did in China. You got to <Speech_Male> attack first before <Speech_Male> the <SpeakerChange> side <Speech_Male> does <Silence> and <Speech_Male> that <Speech_Male> you accept to <Speech_Male> some degree that <Speech_Male> the perception <Speech_Male> of threat was <Speech_Male> was real <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> a lot of people <Speech_Male> seem to find <Speech_Male> that <Speech_Male> objectionable <Speech_Male> Bosnia <Speech_Male> they say <Speech_Male> was going to be <Speech_Male> or was <Speech_Male> a multiethnic <Speech_Male> state. There <Speech_Male> was actually nothing <Speech_Male> to fear <Speech_Male> for the Serb <Speech_Male> community. But <Speech_Male> for <Speech_Male> the Jenning <Speech_Male> of these fears <Speech_Male> by people like <Speech_Male> Rod <Speech_Male> and so <Speech_Male> I guess my question <Speech_Male> is <Silence> first of all <Speech_Male> did <Speech_Male> you buy the <Speech_Male> fear paradigm <Speech_Male> too <Speech_Male> much and <Speech_Male> secondly <Speech_Male> wasn't the fear <Speech_Male> self stoked <Speech_Male> by <Silence> <Speech_Male> Karadzic <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> people like him. <Silence> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> This year <Speech_Female> was self <Speech_Female> stoked <Speech_Female> One <Speech_Female> of the <Speech_Female> points. I'm <Speech_Female> trying to make <Speech_Music_Female> about <Speech_Music_Female> the fear <Speech_Music_Female> of SOCI- aided <Speech_Music_Female> with <Speech_Female> losing <Speech_Female> demographic <Speech_Female> status <Speech_Female> the status <SpeakerChange> <Silence> as the most <Speech_Male> numerous <Speech_Female> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> group <Speech_Female> is that <Speech_Female> this is what's happening <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> some whites <Speech_Female> in the United <Silence> States today <Speech_Female> this <Speech_Female> the fear <Speech_Female> of <Speech_Music_Female> in the case <Speech_Female> of whites <Speech_Female> of <Speech_Female> America becoming <Speech_Music_Female> a <Speech_Female> <Speech_Music_Female> minority majority <Speech_Music_Female> <Speech_Female> nation. <Speech_Female> That whites <Speech_Female> will no longer <Speech_Female> be in <Speech_Female> the majority <Speech_Female> as <Speech_Music_Female> twenty thirteen. <Speech_Female> More non <Speech_Female> white babies <Speech_Female> were born than whites <Speech_Music_Female> there. <Speech_Female> There is a <Speech_Female> fear <Speech_Female> among white nationalist <Speech_Female> in <Speech_Female> the United States. Do <Speech_Music_Female> <Speech_Music_Female> I think that <Speech_Female> there's <Silence> a reason <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> fear? Is <SpeakerChange> this a <Speech_Female> rational <Silence> fear? <Speech_Female> No <Speech_Female> and <Speech_Female> Serbs had <Speech_Female> been the the <Speech_Female> most numerous <Speech_Female> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> group in <Speech_Female> the former Yugoslavia <Speech_Female> when <SpeakerChange> Bosnia <Silence> <Speech_Female> broke <Speech_Female> away <Speech_Female> suddenly Serbs. <Speech_Female> Were outnumbered <Speech_Female> by Moslems <Speech_Female> and <Speech_Female> I try <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> tell the story <Speech_Music_Female> even in the very <Speech_Music_Female> beginning <Speech_Female> of the book <Speech_Music_Female> that carriage <Speech_Female> insisted <Silence> that <Speech_Female> when you're <Speech_Female> afraid <Speech_Female> of snake what <Speech_Music_Female> matters is whether <Speech_Music_Female> the <Speech_Female> snake is <Speech_Female> real and he kept <Speech_Female> saying <SpeakerChange> the snake <Silence> was real <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> and <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> what I say is <Speech_Female> that he conjured <Speech_Female> a BOA constrictor. <Speech_Female> <Silence> Out of <Speech_Female> our snake <Speech_Female> couldn't kill <Speech_Female> people <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> and <Silence> so <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> it's true <Speech_Female> that Serbs were <Speech_Female> going to lose <Speech_Music_Female> their <Speech_Female> status <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> as the <Speech_Female> dominant numerically. <Speech_Music_Female> Dominant <Silence> ethnic <Speech_Female> group. <Speech_Music_Female> But that doesn't <Speech_Female> mean that they were actually <Speech_Female> under <Speech_Female> threat any <Speech_Female> more than <Speech_Female> that. The <Speech_Female> same argument <Speech_Music_Female> would apply to whites <Silence> in the United States. <Silence> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> One <Speech_Male> more question. <Speech_Male> What <Speech_Male> has the response <Speech_Male> from Radovan Karadzic <Silence> Been? <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> He <Speech_Female> wrote me a letter <Speech_Female> telling <Speech_Music_Female> me

Iditarod: The Last Great Race on Earth

"We decided that we would cover sled dog races most notably the editor. Odd in Alaska. Now some people are going to say what the heck this is car stuff stuff right but if you remember car stuff for the past we have always covered just about any form of transportation just about everything really funny thing is that can can even be spun off into other things like I remember yesterday. We we've even done like the Pinewood Derby Cars Derby races everything swims or drives exactly. Yeah I mean every form of transportation and I think this is the perfect time of year to talk about. You know something like this. You know some some way of getting around that maybe not everybody's familiar with but it is really really fascinating. I mean when you dig into it and how into You know the sleds these people get into the dog teams. Of course they get Just the whole lifestyle that goes along with us the history of it. It's all very rich. Isn't it yeah absolutely. It's also one of those races one of those events that takes us to the limits of what our bodies can like endure and it takes us to the limits of what we call civilization. You're very much in the frontier. Have have either of you ever been to Alaska. I have you have you okay. Where'd you go? Well I'll tell you it's not the wilderness experience that you might think I took an Alaskan asking crews many years ago this is probably seven years ago. That's right. Yeah no I remember did talk about this and and it goes to the usual ports. It was a celebrity brand and crews I am. We're not getting paid. Don't worry that's that celebrity brand crews so that tells you the ports that we went to and I I can't remember all of them but it was like catch a can Yeah she i. I can't even skagway was one. I know because I'll tell you this. When we went to Skagway we go a little further north to but skagway and one of the excursions that you could take and we did? Do this one was to go to dog sled training camp and I did that weight and we talked about that and it was fascinating. It was a you know A. I don't know maybe a forty five minute or an hour bus ride to get to this thing. You're seeing things like Bald Eagles on the way and you know it's just pristine beautiful Alaskan countryside recital Ma- ma- little bonus you know trees and things like that and it wasn't like a blizzard or anything like that it was. It was their off-season so they're in training camp rape And you he got the opportunity to go and sit in a training dog sled and have them haul you for one mile trek around this mountain course that they have maybe should I hold onto this for later at. You ought to talk about it right now. It's pretty quick. Hey lay it on so at the time if you remember when I got back from this I was so fired up about this. Because it's almost like if you can picture a golf cart like an elongated golf cart on wheels. Obviously it's not on skis and has has a kind of a a runner in front like a A bump bump guard maybe or something like that it holds six people sitting there. Seats can built into this thing. It's an aluminum frame. I believe or or metal frame and then the musher would stand on the back and they have a dog team in front of you. That's polling and they pull in this mountainous rocky road right and I sit in this cart with you know all these other tourists from the the boat were not small people in it were adults. My daughter is with the shoe small but Everybody else's adults even even the Musher so seven people when those dogs took off. I mean it's slammed me back in the seat it was. It was a forceful take off. And they pulled and pulled and pulled and you thought they were never never gonNa stop and and the funny thing is like these dogs were. I mean they jacked about pulling that sled they loved and and you know there's no way there's there's no you know there's a there's gotta be cruel in some way which we'll get to that because there are people that think that right you see these dogs they are at. I know it's hard to believe we've but they're genuinely excited about pulling that sled and I think it's it's I did. I didn't understand it until I was there. And felt it in person sought in person witnessed all this and it was. It was really cool day. It was hundred bucks at the time. It's more now to do this excursion But it was so worth it. It was so much it's fun and just A A real eye opening experience gave you a little history gave you some of the Unique and stand on a real an actual dog sleds that they had retired. You know wouldn't one and check that out it was really cool. All the parts of it and It just it gave you a greater appreciation for what the sport is about the history of it. The you know the The truth behind it really right. Yeah this is this is the thing so I just went to Alaska earlier this year for the first time in my life I was there for about ten days. I wasn't true for out in the wilderness but I was captivated by How close to the wild people are like does even bigger like the the biggest city in Alaska is still going to have a moose that run the town Mussa just huge? I would not be surprised if there's a Moose Moose in downtown anchorage that has like a mortgage business or something you know so I was. I was amazed by how close while we are in. This even goes into the rules of the idea rod dot which will will discuss in a little bit. Let's first Separate two important things here. Although the race is often called the Karadzic right there is it goes on a route for the majority of the time that follows a trail the idea rod trail which is the different thing. And it's it's very old. It was used for centuries before the first Europeans arrived to use it and and the first people who identified and use this trail from you know from the European side of the Ocean we're rushing for traders way back in the eighteen. Hundreds native people in Alaska first nations would use this This trail system right to travel to different villages and eventually became one of those things like a off call it like a desire path was just the best route from point. A. To Point B.. Two point see the and so on and so in Nineteen Eight Government employees cleared the iditarod trail. which made it a little easier to navigate but in nineteen ten someone found gold and that changes everything in the town of I did I did? Ah Yeah okay well it did change everything because you know the town. I guess kind of blew up overnight right. They became boom towns. And there were a lot of these in Alaska as we all know just from our history classes and you know elementary school you kind of learn about the gold rushes and it what was going on there. But what happened is then a lot of the The Eh what do they call veins. I guess of gold dry up you know they they go away. Goals no longer found is not profitable to do that town kind of dries up along the way with the town remains it remains maybe You know a shell of itself it remains kind of a skeleton of itself and becomes eventually A ghost town if if it's allowed to go that far some of them just kind of remain with few residents here and

"Can that can shave their behavior and actually but karadzic way instead of being actually enemies were there uh and uh we agree though that if like let let me like you agree i guess richard i guess what i'm getting at is and what richard as saying i think i'm going to interpret that is when it's to the extreme level so when it's the extreme level and we see that if you have something that's extreme on on any side to this that's when that creates that riff that is felt round the world so to speak and so it's not the well we disagree to disagree but okay you're in charge kind of like i say and organizations what i gotta speak frankly and i talk about how do you make how do transitional leaders really take the reins and disrupt whatever the status quo is and people embrace it well it's the same thing so somebody new comes in unexpected or there was a wall of pushback on it but now they are in charge so you can agree to disagree but ultimately you've come to the point where okay we have to move forward and to move forward we have to we have to be able to come to an agreement that we're moving forward with this ten too bad you either get on board or you could be critical but there's a certain kind of course criticism when it's like these dams that overflow that are just two bloody damaging you can't put them back and then ultimately it causes this incredible rippling a fact that weekends the hole and i and i really think that's what what he sang if and weakening the whole what what good is that doing the country how is that helping the country because i do think and i think it's powerful to to have different opinions i mean.
