"Very often laying in the streets of bucha shot stabbed burned executed by Russian troops Women and girls raped and thrown into dark alleys were among the victims as well But today as those who fall in silent are found we're starting to hear the stories of survivors who were meant to die but stubbornly did not They are speaking for themselves and the dead today This was never supposed to be public because the Russian military According to its own documents planned to sweep in commit these atrocities kill the leaders of Ukraine take over the country and these graves would lie silent But that's not the case today There are crimes that have been exposed JJ what is the process for catching those who were responsible And since we're still in the middle of a war here how soon could it start It's already started And this is arguably the most important part of the process the documentation The stories that are being told in voice pictures and writing are the beginning of that process The official complaints from Ukraine and the EU will be coming forth soon There may be several different violations that Russia faces Article 6 which deals with genocide of the International Criminal Court article 7 deals with crimes against humanity article 8 war crimes article 15 the crime of aggression A lot of work has to be done to prove this and even though there seems like an overwhelming amount of evidence a lot of work has to be done It's already started And just for context it was 20 years before people who committed genocide in the former Yugoslavia radical melodic and Radovan Karadzic were brought to justice.

"Mitchelson wants to work with kara. I'm going to make this really complicated for my kostecki. So i would be interested in swinging away from that. A group and going with canada's misfit group. They weren't cohesive. This was the biggest problem. Like car was under the impression that she was working with. Georgia georgia someone who is in my opinion hidden here at the stock. I i think she's biggest threat in the brain. One point are tried to be surprising. You don't see a lot of her on the screen but georgia's playing excellent game where she's in this big majority. My belief is that she's created it. She's put joey at ahead of his. He would take any full which he does but she still has incredible trust by the people near the side. Hara is really trusting everything that georgia says. This is what. I'm finding quite difficult about swinging over to the minority this this kind of missed. It minority group is that They don't seem to have a good rate on what's happening so like mitch. His quarreling with george and george in retirement curling niche. Kara thinks she's with georgia whereas georgia season we just. There's a whole lot of chaos happening in the minority side. That i can't seem to bring them together. In a way that i would feel comfortable stepping away from solid four to go work with them. And so i decided not to and i decided to stay with the safer lodge side along along with the idea that you don't really wanna make news too early but mainly like seems like a much more cohesive group of people. So what did you think of their choice target. Mitch like obviously. George is playing this public idol. Things become a little chaotic as they often do with george and going on the say might be more in than obviously some other people on the bottom. Yes like it's a. It's an honor. Uncaptured has his idol. I think he might have been told everyone. So george decides to wear it anyway because we own our and so the call was between car and mitch so we spent all day trying to decide between the two of them. Karadzic mitchell kipps walking back and forth but the decision the end for mitch was because there was a chance that george could play his idol car. He certainly was never gonna play. Mitch he did not get along with it so it was kind of the safest way that we could take up one of those two without without being ruined by the idol play correctly so that was the main reason between those two. I'm and mitch was kind of someone's a consensus because like the minority side didn't seem to be seeing him giving him the truth about what the plan was. The majority like the joey launch wasn't giving him the truth either. Everyone was feeding him. Misinformation pulled me aside and said hi. It's george. I've got all of the votes on george george tonight. I'm like okay like didn't off my opinion. yeah. I think he thought george wouldn't play. It was trying to call his boss. I'm like i'm not willing to risk that. And and just keys are really like.

"Hundred percent responsible. There's no doubt in my mind that he was responsible and that he knew why again. Because i'm relying on the tribunal which had many you know. I'm just one person. I didn't try myself to investigate his culpability. I felt it was important to just rely. On the tribunal's findings and to assess his story against the record. Well i wouldn't say. I assessed his story. Yeah we'll yes. Maybe that's maybe that is a good way of putting it. Yes oh he. His story was actually. I thought there were intercepts. That made him look like he wanted to take credit for serb anita in fact they he did take credit for the massacre. It's he took credit for that massacre until he realized that it could result in his conviction for for genocide and then he walked back his taking credit. But those intercepts were not even you choose to some of the intercept that i got access to were not used by the tribunal because he was taking credit after the attacker. Actually i'm not one hundred percent sure. Why all those intercepts weren't used. I think they didn't find them credible that that carriage wanted to stay that he was responsible at one hundred percent for planning that genocide overseeing it from the very beginning your characterization of it is kind of he. He wanted credit for it within the context of serbian politics and deniability from with with in the context of everything else right he. He wanted to get credit with the serb nationalists that he was the hero that carried out this horrible atrocity not melodic Who was the military commander but he also wanted not to be convicted of genocide so he wanted these two contradictory things One to be to be lionized as the honourable savior of a serbs serbs. Who was prepared in fact did plan a- genocide and yet in in the eyes of the international community and in fact what he said to me was. I didn't know that the muslims were being murdered. He was clearly lie both to the international community and to me. It's very very clear based on intercepts one last area of criticism. That you've gotten is that you give too much credit to his broader political narrative that the serbian community in bosnia was genuinely under threat. And you describe a kind of. I would say sort of an ethnic conflict. Prisoner's dilemma right. You got to attack first before the other side does and that you accept to some degree that the perception of threat was was real and A lot of people seem to find that objectionable bosnia they say was going to be was a multiethnic state. There was actually nothing to fear for the serb community. But for the ginning up of these fears by people like on cartilage and so i guess my question is first of all. Did you buy the fear paradigm too much. And secondly wasn't the fear self stoked by karadzic and people like him. This year was self stoked. And i one of the points. I'm trying.

"Usually associated with psychopathy His grandiosity his manipulative nature. I didn't want to use that term. But i was really hoping that readers would understand from all the adjectives and all the actions watching what carriages tried to do with me and his rage at me. When he heard that i described him as manipulative that they would be able to pull together that he really was a malignant narcissist devoid of shame a habitual liar a demagogue and a mass a genocide. Air at the end. I have to say completely and utterly charming you. I mean one one thing that comes through the book is that you kinda like him and you're angry at yourself about it if you sit with him this. This man is remarkably charming one of the things that he's incredibly good at is somehow intuited. What he might have in common with the person he's talking to. I mean i was watching him do this. I couldn't believe that this serb nationalist leader was able to find things that we had in common so one of the things he kept doing. I think in the beginning. Assuming that if i'm a jew that i would like it that he found ways in which he was pro jewish. I didn't like it. I thought it was completely transparent that he was trying to claim that that he was pro. Jewish and even trying to to make me think that the serbs were the jews of bosnia. Actually a lot of bosniaks In effect suppose they. They have a much stronger claim to being the jews in bosnia of bosnia though have the strongest claim to it. Well yeah you're right to jews claim the farm but the serbs are the last ones to have be able to make that claim there. Is this kind of victimization olympics. And he really wanted to describe the serbs as the biggest victims and that was a very important part of his arguments with me. But for some the thing. That shocks me is that. I'm showing how he makes these arguments trying to manipulate me. And frankly trying to you could see how he was manipulating serbs to come to this perspective and yet. Some people didn't understand that. I was doing that in order to show how fantastically manipulative he was. So let's let's talk about that. Because the i i think the first major criticism of the book is that you got sucked into his worldview. More than you meant to or or even more more than you should have and the more sophisticated versions of this are like. She knows it's happening. She's even describing that it's happening. And yet he influenced her and she looks at a bunch of things from his point of view. To what extent does the criticism have any merit. Well one thing i did is that i did take his story as something. I needed to investigate. So i wasn't writing a book about a the victims. I wasn't writing a book about bosniaks. I was writing a book about him. And so i follow his story and i investigate his claims so one of his claims is that the muslims were going to create a sharia base state in the middle of europe. I investigate that claim. It was absurd absolutely absurd. But i did discover that the the leader of the muslims was an islamist and fact. He called himself in his latest. And that is. I think surprising was it was quite surprising to me. He was not a jihadi by any means but he wasn't if floness and the jihadis did play a role in the defense of the bosniaks in the war. Why did is you beg which turn to jihadis. Why did he turn to iran. Why did he turned to saudi arabia. There were sanctions on the bosniaks and they needed weapons and the united states new That weapons were coming in in violation of an arms embargo. And look the other.

"Word that was used by a couple of people who knew him well. He in his earliest youth was arguing with his father. His father extremely anti partisan anti-communist and so he took the position of that he was a communist in his youth then when it when he was in medical school he became an anti communist activists. Some of his friends insist that even as he was an anti communist activist he dissident. He was in fact spying on youth for the communist authorities. I don't know whether that's true or not. Then i discovered when he was on an imax grant. In new york in the early seventies. i met the man from whom he rented a room and that man told me that at that time he was singing. These banal pro chitose songs. He also joined the green party. But i believe that the nationalism is genuine and i think even though he initially utterly rejected a nationalist position. I think that when he took on them that the mantle of nationalism that is a reflection of how he was raised from his earliest youth. His father was a serb nationalist. Chetnik his father. He was raised to do think of his father as a hero he was raised to think of his ancestors who were served nationalists as heroes and i think that became who he was but he also was able to pretend to be a energy worker when he was in hiding from nato for over twelve years he was able to become a completely different person. A faith healer faith healer. Yes and he actually made money from this practice and he lost about seventy pounds. He completely changed the way he spoke both his accent. And even the tom of his voice. It's i've never heard of anybody able to do this. And so yes he absolutely a an extraordinary bizarre chameleon like quality. But i think the nationalism is who he actually is one of the things you describe toward. The end of the book is that the transformation is so dramatic that he could go to a serb nationalist bar in every night in belgrade in this new persona and sit in front of a picture of himself as rod karadzic and nobody would recognize him. Yes that's what the people in the bar said you know. Of course i can't be a hundred percent sure that they really didn't recognize him because it was a serb nationalists far but that is what everyone said. They didn't know who he was and he you know. He had this very long hair that he tied up with the black bow on top of his head. He had very long beard. He presented himself as this mystical person. Who was at one point. The book has gotten this kind of latent in what we've discussed. But i wanna bring it out. What is your basic conclusion about him. The he's you know. He's a sort of grandiose narcissistic individual with a a deep latent nationalism beef a chameleon like political quality over time. He's a working psychiatrist and a poet and eccentric. How does a person like that. Go from that to supervising schreiber. Nitsa one thing i discovered and this was pretty shocking. Is that his father. Murdered his own cousin. He was not a very able psychiatrist but he was a psychiatrist. Who saw patients. He thought he was an excellent psychiatrist. He says he yes absolutely. He thought he was one of the best psychiatrists he also saw himself. As one of the best poets he was also a poet. He did win prizes. In communist yugoslavia but most of the poets who are taken seriously today did not see him as an excellent poet at all much less the third best in serbian history. Right right he he really. He also predicted that he would get a nobel prize for his literary works so he had a equate grandiose conception of himself one of the things that i learned as a result of this empathetic listening project is that he was not just a political leader. Who turned to nationalism. Because it was expedient when yugoslavia broke up when bosnia broke away all the leaders The the first election all the leaders were nationalised. But this was not a man who became a nationalist because nationalism was in fashion. What i discovered is that he really had nationalism bred in the bone and previous accounts assumed that he was much more like milosevic that he he took on the mantle of nationalism because that would get him elected that was absolutely not the case when he told me in the first five.

And then i often have trouble returning to my notes because i feel this disgust and horror about what happened in the interview and often frankly discussed for the perpetrator and sometimes i have to leave my typed up notes for quite a while before i can bear to go back to them before coming to carretero. Wanna ask you about one other research project that you did which strikes me as a little bit different from these because the subject was dead but it isn't in other ways an extreme example. Which was your search in the book. Denial for everything you could find out about the serial rapist who broke into your house in cambridge when you were a teenager and raped you. I was amazed when i read that book. Which i guess i should say. I read in draft along the way at how much you tried to take that approach even in investigating somebody who had perpetrated a astonishing act of violence against you. Is it fair to say that you couldn't interview him. Obviously but there was a when you say you you you adopt this approach in interviews. You sorta seemed to do it in research. In general even in the most intensely personal situations yes there rape actually occurred in concord massachusetts. But there were many rapes in cambridge. This was an unsolved crime. And i went to back to the police and they realized in their files that there were descriptions of obviously the same perpetrator who Description of exactly the same gun the same modus operandi There were many rapes near harvard. I did get accused of being a terrorist. Sympathiser both in neo nazi n jihadi sympathizer And in fact. I did so much of this work that i sometimes had to have security clearances. One time when i was invested for security clearance i was asked about my my neo nazi which were just seemed completely beyond the pale to me. 'cause i'm jewish. The idea that. I would be sympathetic to neo nazis that that was just seems crazy to me but i also got accused of being a jihadi sympathizer I've also looked at jewish tariffs. So i've been accused of being anti-semitic so this is not the first time that i've been accused of being a sympathizer with the person or persons that i have investigated. When you talk this is a think an important procedural point when you talk to neo. Nazis when you talk to a jihadi is when you talk to jewish terrorists one of the things that striking about your interviews with these people is you sort of try to get in their heads. And you're you're not sitting there arguing with them. You're kinda listening and absorbing. What's the the word. Empathic comes to mind which. I think some people kind of confused with sympathy. How would you describe your general approach to talking to really bad people. I would describe.

Container Ship Stuck in the Suez Canal

"The Suez Canal, One of the world's vital shipping routes, is blocked by one of the world's biggest cargo ships. This ship the ever given ran aground on the bank of the canal and is blocking it. NPR's Jackie Northam reports on what happened and what it might take to move the enormous ship out of the way. Ever given is an enormous ship about a quarter of a mile long, so navigating it through narrow waters, such as the Suez Canal is a challenge. It's still unclear why, but somehow the bow of the vessel began to drift towards one of the bank's maritime consultant. Battle Keratosis was Karatz. This Marine advisors says the vessel is relatively new, so there shouldn't have been any mechanical issues. A ferocious sandstorm may have played a role. There have been reports that visibility was low at the time and may have impaired the capitals and the crew on the bridge. Their visibility and the ship, which is operated by Taiwan based Evergreen Group ended up across the Suez Canal. Karadzic's says powerful tug boats have been trying to pull the vessel out of the sand bank. They may have to bring other vessels and take off some of the containers off the vessel. They may have to take a ballast water out of the vessel. Another connect the vessel right there and to make it, you know, lift itself from underwater large. Jenson, the CEO of Copenhagen based See Intelligence Consulting, says supply chains were already in disarray caused by a ripple effect from the pandemic. So you have a job or congestion. You have shortages of vessel capacity of shortages of empty containers. There's a myriad of things that are out of kilter will supply chain already distant and some top of it. And that's not good guy plant in with the International Chamber of Shipping, says 12% of global trade passes through the canal and more than 100 ships are now waiting to enter

Coronavirus Wreaks Havoc On The Global Shipping Industry

"San Francisco is of course home to a very busy port. The vessels that travel in and out of there being hit hard the corona virus is wreaking havoc on the entire global shipping industry. And this is all coming on. The back of a protracted trade war with China Amperes. Jackie Northam reports an bright blue crane clamps onto a shipping container sitting on a flatbed truck effortlessly picks it up sore sixty feet in the air and stacks it on top of five other containers. Toast the new crane-operator he's very slow. Visually it swam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Joe Harris a spokesman for the Port Virginia in Norfolk says the cranes are part of a new eight hundred million dollar expansion here. The third busiest port on the east coast. There's a lot of moving parts here so many pieces to it. There there are no incidental moves. Everything is planned. It's truly like a like a watch but the corona virus has upended the precision planning here and at other ports throughout the US and around the world the global supply chain was interrupted when Beijing imposed travel restrictions China Manufacturing slowed. The docks were quiet. Chinese exports ground to a halt as a result. Cargo ships are being idled in dozens of sailings have been cancelled says John Reinhardt. The CEO of the Port of Virginia. There've been over one hundred twenty ships that we're gonNA come to the United States. That have been blanked. So that means they're not sailing for the periods of late. February march and April. You could be talking anywhere from fifteen to thirty percent of the freight that normally flows in and out of this country will not be happening. This slowdown is affecting shipping. Companies Large and small worldwide Maersk. The world's biggest container ship operator warned its earnings would be lower basil. Karadzic's CEO of new york-based Crisis Marine advisers says. The past decade has not been good for shipowners. The demand has been growing at a slower rate than at dawn inch supply. So they're all the shipowners right now. Do not have much money to spare. Disruption is having a severe knock on effect for other parts of the shipping industry says Western Lebar. Ceo of the Harbour Trucking Association in Long Beach California. It's a bad time for everybody. There were three hundred teamster drivers that were laid off just last week because of the inability to have enough rate for them to move. We've seen employee. Drivers take a voluntary reduction hours for some of our companies as much as twenty five to fifty percent of ours well over half of Chinese exports to the US are unloaded in California and the Port of Los Angeles. Long Beach is the busiest complex in the country. Labar says one in every five jobs in Long Beach is directly or indirectly related to the port. Andy says businesses are down sixty to seventy percent since the beginning of February. But Lebar says there is a flicker of hope. The Corona virus is starting to ease up in China. We're hearing many of our customers. That manufacturing is starting to pick back up in China that the ports in China especially the main large port. Shanghai is now getting back to full operations and the hope is that in a week or two maybe we can start to dig ourselves out of this and get back to full operations but Labar says there is a challenge ahead to consider whether the corona virus spreading across the US will affect port operations here as it did in China. Iditarod: The Last Great Race on Earth

"We decided that we would cover sled dog races most notably the editor. Odd in Alaska. Now some people are going to say what the heck this is car stuff stuff right but if you remember car stuff for the past we have always covered just about any form of transportation just about everything really funny thing is that can can even be spun off into other things like I remember yesterday. We we've even done like the Pinewood Derby Cars Derby races everything swims or drives exactly. Yeah I mean every form of transportation and I think this is the perfect time of year to talk about. You know something like this. You know some some way of getting around that maybe not everybody's familiar with but it is really really fascinating. I mean when you dig into it and how into You know the sleds these people get into the dog teams. Of course they get Just the whole lifestyle that goes along with us the history of it. It's all very rich. Isn't it yeah absolutely. It's also one of those races one of those events that takes us to the limits of what our bodies can like endure and it takes us to the limits of what we call civilization. You're very much in the frontier. Have have either of you ever been to Alaska. I have you have you okay. Where'd you go? Well I'll tell you it's not the wilderness experience that you might think I took an Alaskan asking crews many years ago this is probably seven years ago. That's right. Yeah no I remember did talk about this and and it goes to the usual ports. It was a celebrity brand and crews I am. We're not getting paid. Don't worry that's that celebrity brand crews so that tells you the ports that we went to and I I can't remember all of them but it was like catch a can Yeah she i. I can't even skagway was one. I know because I'll tell you this. When we went to Skagway we go a little further north to but skagway and one of the excursions that you could take and we did? Do this one was to go to dog sled training camp and I did that weight and we talked about that and it was fascinating. It was a you know A. I don't know maybe a forty five minute or an hour bus ride to get to this thing. You're seeing things like Bald Eagles on the way and you know it's just pristine beautiful Alaskan countryside recital Ma- ma- little bonus you know trees and things like that and it wasn't like a blizzard or anything like that it was. It was their off-season so they're in training camp rape And you he got the opportunity to go and sit in a training dog sled and have them haul you for one mile trek around this mountain course that they have maybe should I hold onto this for later at. You ought to talk about it right now. It's pretty quick. Hey lay it on so at the time if you remember when I got back from this I was so fired up about this. Because it's almost like if you can picture a golf cart like an elongated golf cart on wheels. Obviously it's not on skis and has has a kind of a a runner in front like a A bump bump guard maybe or something like that it holds six people sitting there. Seats can built into this thing. It's an aluminum frame. I believe or or metal frame and then the musher would stand on the back and they have a dog team in front of you. That's polling and they pull in this mountainous rocky road right and I sit in this cart with you know all these other tourists from the the boat were not small people in it were adults. My daughter is with the shoe small but Everybody else's adults even even the Musher so seven people when those dogs took off. I mean it's slammed me back in the seat it was. It was a forceful take off. And they pulled and pulled and pulled and you thought they were never never gonNa stop and and the funny thing is like these dogs were. I mean they jacked about pulling that sled they loved and and you know there's no way there's there's no you know there's a there's gotta be cruel in some way which we'll get to that because there are people that think that right you see these dogs they are at. I know it's hard to believe we've but they're genuinely excited about pulling that sled and I think it's it's I did. I didn't understand it until I was there. And felt it in person sought in person witnessed all this and it was. It was really cool day. It was hundred bucks at the time. It's more now to do this excursion But it was so worth it. It was so much it's fun and just A A real eye opening experience gave you a little history gave you some of the Unique and stand on a real an actual dog sleds that they had retired. You know wouldn't one and check that out it was really cool. All the parts of it and It just it gave you a greater appreciation for what the sport is about the history of it. The you know the The truth behind it really right. Yeah this is this is the thing so I just went to Alaska earlier this year for the first time in my life I was there for about ten days. I wasn't true for out in the wilderness but I was captivated by How close to the wild people are like does even bigger like the the biggest city in Alaska is still going to have a moose that run the town Mussa just huge? I would not be surprised if there's a Moose Moose in downtown anchorage that has like a mortgage business or something you know so I was. I was amazed by how close while we are in. This even goes into the rules of the idea rod dot which will will discuss in a little bit. Let's first Separate two important things here. Although the race is often called the Karadzic right there is it goes on a route for the majority of the time that follows a trail the idea rod trail which is the different thing. And it's it's very old. It was used for centuries before the first Europeans arrived to use it and and the first people who identified and use this trail from you know from the European side of the Ocean we're rushing for traders way back in the eighteen. Hundreds native people in Alaska first nations would use this This trail system right to travel to different villages and eventually became one of those things like a off call it like a desire path was just the best route from point. A. To Point B.. Two point see the and so on and so in Nineteen Eight Government employees cleared the iditarod trail. which made it a little easier to navigate but in nineteen ten someone found gold and that changes everything in the town of I did I did? Ah Yeah okay well it did change everything because you know the town. I guess kind of blew up overnight right. They became boom towns. And there were a lot of these in Alaska as we all know just from our history classes and you know elementary school you kind of learn about the gold rushes and it what was going on there. But what happened is then a lot of the The Eh what do they call veins. I guess of gold dry up you know they they go away. Goals no longer found is not profitable to do that town kind of dries up along the way with the town remains it remains maybe You know a shell of itself it remains kind of a skeleton of itself and becomes eventually A ghost town if if it's allowed to go that far some of them just kind of remain with few residents here and
