Phillies owner John Middleton questioned after deciding to fire Gabe Kapler

"Last year. Hindsight's great, but it wasn't hindsight. John Middleton at the news conference last year when Hey, fired Gabe Kapler, and this is self explanatory, and let's hear John When you fired Ruben Amaro, you said it's a results based business, right? Gabe Kapler took the hit. And I'm wondering why it was just Gabe Kapler. And I, among other people are wondering why this and I like both Matt and Andy. Why those two gentlemen are sitting with you today after what you've done, so I'm gonna ask you a question. How are you going to give you some stats? The question is this You tell me what part of this organization isn't better today and really substantially better today than it was four years ago when they came So that's a little minor league system and I see since match drafted I believe you have two players that made the major leagues and Kohler bring this year and hazily. So outside of that, I'm wondering there's a feeder system. Other teams have injuries and they've overcome them. The Phillies couldn't and I don't think it was all games for, but I realized the decision had to be made. But what did he have to support him? From your draft picks. So happened Let me I've got the bullpens IRA, but to answer your question in the second half of the season, particularly from the trade deadline on Howard Isn't it? The fourth highest for the best bullpen? You're a in baseball. So this kind of sit there and say that covered was bears is not true, because if that's the case, then what about the other 2016? The worst bullpen. The cupboard was bare. Look at the bullpen this year. I love the way McClintock and he looked at Macklin Tak when he said that he fed him all these stats. Two roll out during this news conference. That's a joke. The bullpen the fourth best from July on well, this season doesn't go from July 1, and that's It was, it was a mirage. It was a joke to defend him and then animate failure says Well, we have three players in the top 100 baseball in the minor league system. There's 30 teams. That's barely an average. The Braves had five in the top 64. So let's go. Let's move on. So this week, McClintock and this is beautiful, too. This is a joke. God, let's go with McClintock. Um I am really proud of this team the way that they have overcome Not only the cove it issues early in the year, but more recently, the way the guys have stepped up to overcome some of the injuries that we've had Andi put themselves in a position this week to control their own destiny on DH Make a push for October. Um, that's probably The biggest thing for me, Bob is that I'm proud of the way this group is handled it. There's been, um, you know again, there been many challenges, most of which you've written about, but Just to see guys. Come up from the system and contribute to see the way that No nap and March John have performed in Jae Hee's absence to see The way that bone has been able to slide over from third to first security downs from 2nd 3rd to help us navigate. Reese is injury. Um, you know the way that Kodiak come up and got a couple of big plate appearances for us. I'm sure I'm missing. Jo Jo and Brandon have taken down beginnings the last couple of weeks. I think that's the thing I'm most proud of with. This group has been really rallied around the next man up mentality and put themselves in a good position heading into the final week. It's a joke. It's a joke I spin. He is the new spin doctor, Philadelphia. They've navigated through the Kobe. So is every other team. The Cardinals are still in it, and they had 11 doubleheaders. The Marlins had to sit in a hotel room for over over seven days, and they're in the playoffs. I don't want to hear about navigating through it. I don't want to hear about injuries. The Braves lost at one time or another, Every one of their five starters. They lost Freddie Freeman at the beginning of the year. They lost a kuna. I mean, it's a joke to you to say, Oh, yeah way injuries and bone moves from third to 1st 1st is probably his natural position and sugar goes from 2nd and 3rd. He started the season at third. It's been It's nonsense, and Jo Jo You know, coughed it up the last two outings. Stop stop. They actually got a break The way Hoskins was hitting that those things happened in their offense, maybe became a little bit better in five years. He's got one player to show for it. One player And that's Alec. Bone. One player

Giants manager Gabe Kapler, players kneel during anthem

"Phillies manager Gabe Kapler joined several of his San Francisco Giants kneeling during the national anthem before a preseason. Game last night when the national anthem began playing last night in Oakland for San Francisco, Giant players kneeled and they were joined by their manager, Gabe Kapler, Kapler became the first major league manager to take a knee during the anthem. I wanted to demonstrate my dissatisfaction with our clear systemic racism in our country when the baseball season finally begins on Thursday, many other players are expected to kneel during the Anthem.

Giants' Kapler kneels with players during anthem

"That The number one headlines across the country, and maybe even here locally are going to center around the national anthem and what happened with the Giants players and coaches and manager During the national anthem. Gabe Kapler took any several Giants players Jalen Davis and Mike Extreme Ski in Austin. Slater were among them. And John Richardson, one of the Giants coaches was on any other Giants players, seemingly even if they weren't kneeling down in solidarity. I think that is going, Tio Generate a lot of discussion around the country and we saw a quick Word from the giantsclubhouse sort of like in a Cactus League game. Players who leave the game are made available for comments. I think it was Kevin Gausman, who commented on it and said, Hey, we're all here to support each other, and the message before the game was with the first anthem coming up. Since this restart that whatever anybody does, you're going to be supported around here. It's your choice and will support you. And so anyway, I have a feeling that's gonna generate a lot of discussion with the Giants did tonight. Well, I think so. And

"Meetings as well as our major league coaches were building communication with our minor league coaches for the zoom calls. That we haven't another time in history where we've been able to see these things play out because we just haven't had the time in the day the what's happened. John is the relationships are being built between our miley getting coaches in our major league getting coaches and Antoine. Richardson are outfield. Base running coach is facilitating these zoom calls. So that our outfielders in the minor league and at the major league level. So if you can if you can picture under bishop and you Stransky on these calls with all of our minor league coaches and Major League outfielder outfield base running coaches all having conversations about first step quickness and about winning the first three steps. You can see that we're collaborating as an organization right now using these technologies that that you reference so that's the main part of my day and and a part of my day that I'm most proud of is participating in and and helping facilitating facilitate some of these calls utilizing technology. Well what a great opportunity and experience for these younger guys to actually be on the call with the bigly coaches and the big league players very very cool opportunity it and like I said kind of unprecedented. I think as a farm director when I played that role and then as a major league staff number you always dream about connecting minor league and Major League coaches and players alike because minor league players get so much out of hearing major league players talk and seeing them face to face. But you never have the bandwidth to make it happen and we really see this as competitive window for us to be better than than other organizations out this and you know. I. I don't mean mean mean to say that other organizations are doing. The same thing I would say is is that we're.

"A couple of people around the organization who play. We talked about doing some jam sessions together. One of them is a are are traveling secretary or our travel lead in. I might get together and play music together. I remember back to being in Tampa Bay as a player Longoria myself. Fernando Perez other players who played instruments or get into jam session regular basis We'd have a play set up where we could go play. Rocco Ball Deli was involved in that as well So I think it's a really good way to stay connected. Play music together songs. Wanted to make sure that I have my base boy. That's beautiful sounds like a great zoom opportunity these days but I think you're using probably for other reasons. That's about my family. I can relate you have an eighteen year old. I have a seventeen year old. Who's using zoom every day in school? Which is a great thing for these kids? It's a classroom setting and it's a lecture. It's a class participation. It's as if you're there and it's a really cool thing. I myself spend Easter on zoom. Usually I get together with the family but wasn't to happen this time. Anyway what could I could ask. What a typical day is for you. You know from communicating with your staff and players and front office to even do in the personal things like like eating or cooking or working out under You know obviously you have to prepare for a season that may or may not come but the communication factor I imagine is paramount. And what's Your Day like in these times? A great a great question and you mentioned you mentioned zoo. I think we're lucky that we're sheltering in place in a time where we can use various.

"Public apology today from your friend Gabe Kapler are you do not deserve one no I feel pretty good about what you had done you kind of got yesterday while you were hinting at or or not more than it yeah we were staying loudly last you in that it was you know Jeter's fault what happened I mean Jesus made it but I don't think you're gonna get a public apology and I will say the rest of with cigarette that was I thought fascinating because I think all we wanted and you want to forget capital with accountability for for security there because obviously the loss of a great player McCutchen I think that happened a minute whether or not it because the captain I don't think so I think it's just he may got hurt it clearly affected gene the girl which I think was with kind of what we're wondering he cared he care what he did and I began to study that all right well that's all well and good but I want to get back to my apologies all right because he has the problem the man said this last year you're telling me you shouldn't be apologize it wasn't worth all the that it is it's absolutely irresponsible that's my reputation play with Geely all what you wanted like if you were right and somebody called you irresponsible you would expect them to clear the record with an apology would you not I would be upset but I I don't believe I I very rarely believe in an apology phone or talk radio we fail we stay we move on and we don't usually apologize for that I'm going to turn the key challenge here is far more of a professional than any of us Jody is jail we are right here now if you have the dot you have a do you have what's your name the Oscar is your desk asked who makes more sense right now you Oscar or Geely Oscar Oscar the big brain dump blading jackass that still yeah I can't believe I anyway I cannot get away with this guy do you at all feel stupid now that you supported this moron no not at all okay that was a good manager is going to be one for a long time and I I could see right here's what I can tell so that that it come out I think it loudly and then in between the lines as well I think last year that disconnect between the coaching staff I don't know if it was a Catholic mostly pitching coach and and the pictures there they have not been shy about it like work with Brian who brought those those coaches in I will gave a contact and then it kept a meticulous training out yeah they kept on that's that's games problem he fought for them hard because you know every time they went Adam about it he vociferously defended both of those guys who were not very good at that no no no that's right the biggest fault we had last year was putting a coach that players that he did not like we don't work out with Joe what will you miss most about Gabe what what was soul captivating about him to you all the press conferences come I gave him a job even for after the game so that that that's stuck with it but what I think most press conferences in baseball because there's so many that every single day they're boring remember not at the very same thing every day they rarely anything that gets people care about but but obviously people reacted to Gabe Kapler whatever you tell you wanted to add things to make fun of them about yes I think I think we could have reacted yes my woman are you come on board you did support I'm not right next week in this slot we are going to book Oscar real we're going to get Oscar odd to see if he's doing a better job to Geely absolved her have a cellphone number it's getting one Joe let me move out a couple of days ago and I'm Matt Breen on this show yeah say covers the Phillies for the Inquirer dot com said their fourth place team you agree with them yeah I I do right now and they they look like the fourth best even the other way so I will say that the gap between first and fourth is I believe less than it was at the end of last season here the graves lost Josh Donaldson which is a gigantic what they get bad good players a lot Donald than the national law that he rent own who's really irreplaceable for them then that's what that Wheeler to the Philly we even other GM and went back and forth about that his ability and all that he's a good pitcher so if you think the police have closed the gap a little bit right now if you had to line up yeah I would say the fourth best team in the division all right if that's true it's the last year for both macphail and Klentak you agree with that yes well I mean just think about the the the way the Phillies have gone about their business but you may have they've really put it on to where they the way we talked last weekend so we drove me crazy both excel and click that they're really double down on the idea that last year the failures they had they believe they built a good team and I had some bad luck you know injury locked out of the bullpen McCutchen and and just things didn't go their way that is that the way they view their team so they really didn't do much to change the team you know we always a good picture depicted shortstop that's really the significant changes so yeah if I'm the owner and then the GM GM of the present are saying we built a good team we had bad luck with bringing back that same good team this time it'll be different if it's not then then I have to make a change it's going to be very interesting because I agree with you they made it sound like they've done an amazing job for four years and they are one bad streak away from B. and go on let's move on to our what's going on in baseball in general and the Astros right now I know if you heard the commissioner a more obnoxious you're out here I think I lay come less than Roger Goodell yeah what a dismissive arrogant man you're one of the things he said about why he will not stripped the title from the twenty seventeen Astros is that it would be futile I listen to this the idea of you know an asterisk or asking for a piece of metal back scenes you know sort of a feudal act people are always know that there was something about the twenty seventeen World Series that was different and they're gonna know that because whether we made every decision right or wrong we undertook a really thorough investigation and we had the intestinal fortitude to put out there.

Spring training: time for pitchers, catchers and cheaters

"Are to believe but baseball is right around the corner both the ETS and the giants pitchers and catchers report to their first spring training workout next Wednesday as for the giants a member of the old guard is coming back former fan favorite hunter pence the thirty six year old outfielder has signed a one year deal worth three million dollars with incentives pens played with the Texas Rangers last year hit two ninety seven with eighteen homers and fifty nine R. "You need a closer or are you. Open to rotating that position or even used in your best best reliever in a higher leverage seventh or eighth inning situation where we'd see a stereotypical closer into twenty twenty twenty things a little too early to tell John I mean I think we want to see see what our our roster looks like heading into spring training. I think we've got a lot of possibilities right now. For the sixth through the ninth and we'll look to be creative to to find the best fits for each situation now do von seems to be a a real wildcard linear. He was really impressive. toward the end of last season at Ed both short and second but he so athletic he could do a lot of things that I was the outfield particular Centerfield do see him roaming around the diamond or is he the in the mix at second base with the Solano and the newcomer Gilmer Sanchez. We see it as we see opportunities for playing time as as merit based so We see Yohmor and we see DEVAN. We see Solano. No no as competing for playing time. We see some openings in the outfield and so for that reason we're excited about let's see what do bond can do in the outfield as well and these are conversations that we'll continue to have with with all players. Are you looking For the second baseman to be more defensive minded or more hitting minded because Sanchez comes as a raining. Gold Glover From the white sox where he was wonderful on defense but maybe provide the pop that you might be looking for with this lineup. We're excited about Sanchez's Sanchez's Defense contributions and he's also put in quite a bit of time with with Justin belief. One of our major league coaches Spent a good deal of time with him. This past offseason working through swing adjustments Those swing adjustments Yohmor has been pretty committed to and we're excited to see what those changes producing spring training and in the regular season. Speaking of the new coaches have they at all met with or at least spoken with all the veterans. Including you know buster Posey in Crawford and belt and Longoria. Here's been a lot of work done so far John so Longoria and Crawford both have spent time with our hitting roof in the cage in Scottsdale Buster and some Marjo have both been here in San Francisco had an opportunity to talk to both of those guys. They're both working really hard into to put their bodies and their minds in the right position to have success in in twenty twenty But all of our coaches are making consistent contact with with our players That's that's true for me as well. Some really good conversations with with our players already. Pablo Sandoval is a giant again. Yes or at least he will be resuming. His Rehab with the giants opening day. Seems Unlikely I don't know maybe I'm wrong. But he's A. He's a bit ahead of schedule. But I think opening day is is certainly certainly ambitious given the circumstances right you met with him in Miami off season did that Lead to the signing here or was that the introductory Conversation you had and would you expect from him. It wasn't for sure that he was gonna be back but he does as Bruce Bochy said many times provide a lot of personality in leadership and Enjoy those sure so Collaboration always leads to the signing of players As far as Pablo's lows impact on on the clubhouse I don't think it can be discounted. It's a it's a big thing. He's he keeps the mood life. He knows how to to inspire his teammates and have been example of that. When I went out to Miami and I sat down with Suarez Anderson and Pablo Pablo double had a a really mature perspective on how to handle that conversation he knew when the right time was for to take control of the conversation but he also also knew when to tee up Anderson and Suarez so that I was able to get to know the three of them together at the same time? He's just he's a mature but also very lighthearted joy filled athlete. And then I'll say this as when we came in with the phillies Pablo. Oh was dangerous coming off the bench swing and a good bat and he. We always had to account for the possibility that he was gonNA come up in a big situation and and we knew that he was going to be a grind of a plate appearance. And so yeah I mean He. He had a good year last year with the BAT. And I'm excited for for him. When he's fully healthy he would that be made with Epi June July? Would that be August. Do we know. I don't think we have an exact timeline yet I've I've seen videos of Pablo. He's he shares awesome and he's excited about his progress so he's throwing fairly aggressively at this point And obviously he shared some videos. Swing swing looks good. Looks in good shape. You mentioned Anderson is one of the three met in Miami. Which Anderson was the Sean John Anderson? Okay in Tyler will be ready for the season. I don't know exactly where he is in his time. Line right now but I can get that information for you okay. Anybody else Smiley anybody else. Who is questionable? annable for opening day smiley healthy okay. Yeah we're we're good to go there. Okay Okay and Darren rough another newcomer. Who spent the last last three years in Korea? Yeah hit some home runs. Eighty plus I don't know if that's the level of AAA or what but eighty five home runs. Eighty five home runs. Let's first baseman slash corner. After would you see of him. You nailed it on heat. So in in Korea the numbers he put up. Were really impressive. I I think three years in a row were was nine hundred opie s and I think at least one of those years was over thousands so he was able to to do two things. He's very well that we value number one hit for power number to get on base so and Darren we had some exposure to Darren when I was in player player development with the dodgers many years ago And Look I mean I'm not sure how much of the performance from Korea the last couple of years translates it's two major league baseball but they're certainly reason for optimism. Where's this going to get? Its power This is a tougher ballpark park to hit them. Most if not all and the numbers on the offensive side last few years haven't been impressive on the power side with. Where are you going to get your our our job as a major league? Coaching staff is to take the pieces that we have in this room. The athletes that we that we have in this room in on our roster right now and try try to turn the dial up just a little bit We are a player. Development Focused Major League coaching staff. So one way for us to to get a two to power in our lineup is to improve swings improve swing decisions And continue can you to to make adjustments to get the most out of our our very talented athletes. I think there's another level in another gear in some some of our veteran players. And I think that we're GONNA do everything necessary to develop the the young players that are still coming into their own and I think in Strips Ubon Jalen Davis dickerson. Like these are slater. All of these guys have have some pretty high ceilings. Yes you have a relationship with Kevin Pillar. Yeah we We both come from the same part of California. Yeah Yeah we've stayed in touch over the years. Now he's a free agent yes Farhan told me that before spring training. He's expecting one or two more outfielders in the mix to bring in church and I'm wondering if You might shed any light on whether he would be somebody you'd like to pursue or have I know this. Isn't you know party. Part of your Gig you manage. The team brings the players in but with no and your relationship with other players who have come in. Let me drop that name. Yes so I I'd say I respect the work and the job that far on and Scott hairs are are. GM have to do which which is to decide on on what the roster is going to look like and it's my job to be a thought partner with them on those decisions but then also to I fully support and and get the most out of the players that come into the clubhouse in our on our major league roster rather than speaking to individuals I can speak to characteristics heuristic value I value and respect hard play gritty play Fiery play guys that are tough and that are gonNA scratch and claw in grind for every possible advantage so rather than speak to anyone individuals individual. I can tell you that the character characteristics value. Are Those understood. Some of the characteristics centered on. Roy Does maybe the last thing would be. What could you tell giant Ryan fans about the twenty twenty giants that would make them encouraged after three straight losing seasons here? Yeah I think the thing that comes to mind immediately is when teams get on their charters to fly back to their home cities after playing three game series in San Francisco Cisco we expect for them to be exhausted because of our grind our hustle our determination and our fight. So I think that's brand of baseball. That giants fans can get on board with and one that our clubhouse our players our staff will be proud to play and I think that's an that's an entertaining brand of major league baseball. Well good enough. Thank you very much thank you. Thank you for listening to this. Episode of the giant Splash. We'll have more your podcast leading up to spring. "All right during the break here we'll get a little heated talking about Kapler and the reactions and all that so you know what the Westin approve each set it's time to get into the island five I want to get all right at five I'm ready so we have with us our friend Hey Lani ha hello hello hi I'm bass here at the Westin opponent that's correct aloha hello my my hollow for coming on yeah for having me I'm very honored to be here with all of you and the world look what you gave us here I know all gazing out at or just this morning one most beautiful places on earth if not the most beautiful place is that since it's such a blessing to be here I don't even feel like working two I love being here so much because one of the reasons is because you can walk right down from the pool area to what I will call the greatest beach I've ever been on in my life the water the sandy bottom I mean it is truly spectacular thank you for the beach yeah it is appointed piece is very special to us especially the ones that lives here on the island and of course our visitors that comes to visit us every day yes so great so you have some cultural features here which I really like we you know mom but my family here before we investigated the history and culture of Hawaii so for people who are coming out to the west and have to know what can they learn about the beautiful state of why here well what we offer here at our beautiful all put on our civil put a beach we do hula lessons are lay making you want to learn some Hawaiian language you know a lot of people come to wait to be connected it to have a relationship with our beautiful land of course are beautiful ocean that's right here that you can see that for us it's very important that we share that of course you know that's kind of like someone's bucket list control what he had to get that culture vibe like would you dismiss earlier Murphy yet a Joan you're going to hear all this is your first trip to Hawaii she has hula lessons les making Hawaiian language lessons does everything a pancake Sam yeah yeah right yeah welcome thing right so much for being here with us so I'm all into can guys do who will last one the only time who was actually done by our men or women today and one of our best hula dancers are actually meant nice okay so that our and my classes yeah all of you got to come out we do you teach I do I am actually the teacher that does all of that wow so we do it right here in the lobby so that everyone can see us well then I do know in time is this I maybe that starts about noon hello hello no just the slow nice so here's what I'm thinking right now we get Merv to sign UP I show applied in the corner film him and then put it on social media that's the deal what's the number one key like the number one key to a great hula dance like yeah it would be your expression you have to give out your expression so that they know what you're dancing to it's not about shaking giving the racial expression they so okay with lots of love it in theory it has come from the heart all of that what's that history of the who live here like whiskey was actually taking back all the way back back then who was not just done for entertainment it was actually done more ceremonial purposes if a key or cheap was coming into your district who was present when presented to that family love it yeah it's open to everyone we should you know these guys I want to see our listeners did you get involved some who do who I have seen he has a ready Lani it's fantastic other things you guys do things in the water and you actually early in the morning at about six fifteen it's called a I'll a it's actually a Hawaiian ritual jewel journey yeah a lot of people and I take them down to the ocean I do a whole line chanting it's like a blessing that opens up every day I would love to do this now are you in the water or on the in the water your info okay and this is in a note here that you don't want to come and join me it's early in the morning at six o'clock I know you guys are on air well we four AM how do you feel about me leaving the but I would I would love to do that okay and then like you to give the report tomorrow let's do it I will I don't know if only to be a lot in here but I found myself up I would love to do that yeah yeah all part of the cultural features at the Westin upon with Hey Lonnie are aloha and faster yeah man my hollow for stopping Mylan newly for having me everyone all of you for he alone absolute and I want to see you guys in the water it was he who laying I want to see you lay making it worse you learn the language you got to admit that early morning ritual the chanting has got my name all over this is I don't I mean when I'm getting from this is that the hula is sort of basically a Hawaiian hippie yeah I mean like a boy the hip so elements here for sure I was selling these guys earlier like we're gonna look are going somewhere that I always find the hippie spots and there's a little hippie haven north here call hobby go check it out to cool down I feel like right now I need your summer we need to beat Nelly right I know I mean I don't smoke yeah yeah yeah I didn't want to coach yeah yeah yeah right so that I feel because he's in Maui he's the only yeah right now users watering his plants over and over he's got his own morning ritual involves watering the plants in a role in one up are we got choices here and might be wants us to play the Ingram Jackson sound well we could talk cappers receive Capper for tomorrow because tomorrow there's nothing going on tonight it's a Kapler Marla okay is all quiet on the Kapler front for now let me just share one quick can't yeah yeah so the giants community fund you giants I'm on the board but to be vice chair but we co chair which is to be too much for me by the way it's a huge time commitment but I'm happy to do it for the kids I I just I just feel like I'm gonna screw it up yeah I'm saying yeah I thank god I have Kelly from a bank of America to help me out as my coach here because she's the brains the operation but we're about to start your run as the chair so we gotta go we get to go to all these events so in November they do the junior giant willing backward luncheon and that is every leak from San Luis Obispo to Nevada to Oregon there are so many leagues and many women who have with twenty five thousand kids like eighty something leaks or something every league picks a Willie mac award winner which is the kid who embodies nice here it up nicely mac or yeah so that's that kid the most like the heart and hustle award you know what the Willie mac award winner of the Murph and mac family being we mean the listeners who noted on the back of like your cold's is your man you know I mean like it's gonna be met and that I would think so too does the specter cups of going to hate us what an eye with a willing to work you know what I don't like cops here it is there it is right there anyway so I missed it on Saturday because I had to be at a family of whatever yeah I was up and got a whole thing going on yeah we're to swim you're just being a dad being I got to run all around California visa okay Flemington thank you Dave for doing any M. suit and who showed up and spent a ton of time with all the kids Gabe Kapler all wow yeah yes and that is not been done by other manager I know we love boats but he's you know he's in San Diego this time of year usually couldn't make it work yeah also for Hon showed up in their own right full well press yes definitely yeah I'm going on here making an effort yeah but he's been a tough deal they were there so we can get more into the particulars of interesting on the other side but just to kind of like make the third topic of the segment here the NFL because that might be says the said you got here mark Ingram of the Baltimore Ravens so it's great to sounds money and Lamar jacks in had too much fun after their fourth consecutive win of fourteen points or more I'm gonna say this too before we played you also need the visual because he's like throwing hand gestures he's like grown three fingers all kinds of stuff going on so here's mark Ingram so large axes you know when you're doing like kills doing an interview and then Richard Sherman enters yes on that swap places yep well marking was finishing up at his and his podium and Lamar Jackson walks in any gives an intro fit for a king here our selected who shot the man the myth the legend the MVP front runner anybody's guess is something different about dating come see me yeah right here be more outside the bank if you had an issue with that come see me we'll come out there we'll.

"Update from Bruce Kapler as the new giants manager but most baseball fans CMOS giants fans in most media are very skeptical of those hired by giants head of baseball operations for Hon Sadie Capparis forty four years old spent the last two years managing the Phillies before that was a director minor leagues for the Dodgers and before that was a twelve year major league player Kapler is certainly a realist after two years of mediocrity with the Phillies in his first major league managing job he knows the expectations won't be very high and twenty twenty for the giants I would probably just use it as an opportunity to roll up my sleeves a little bit more to dig in a little bit more to really find out what the issues are to find out why I have had some of those issues and why so far I I have not been a popular higher campers bright articulate World League but is to Philadelphia teams were mediocre underachieving and disappointing it was his first job in the major leagues as a manager formerly he was the director of the minor league operations of the Dodgers he helped put together some pretty good teams down in LA recently working with far Hon Sadie Kapler mis handled a situation where a couple of Dodger minor leaguers were accused to have committed sexual assaults sampler says he would have handled the situation much differently today far mention that day he I'm done I finally speaking for himself personally but I think I certainly haven't done enough and the industry hasn't done enough and I think it takes people willing to have those first conversations with players about what's important to us and and what we're gonna stand for in our clubhouse and I think the way that I can make the biggest impact immediately is to talk about these things openly with our players a lot of work at forget Capper we haven't even touched on his baseball argument finally in basketball no surprise the warriors got pummeled by the Lakers in LA one twenty ten ninety four on Wednesday night the record now a sorry to intent at the sports desk Bruce McGowan KCBS holiday tips and fun facts from Paul Kristen indexer total anymore there are some Conservatorium bubbles are ridiculous selection of champagne and sparkling wines will make the holidays Chris white perfectly misprint cocktail other.

"Covers talked about the fact that he and his ex wife had a domestic violence charitable foundation. Because she herself had been the victim of domestic violence wanted a previous relationship He has suggested in places where the things he'd learned from that organization. He sort of tried to apply. I think in this instance things like mediation and things like that when it was you know equitable situations. Obviously so I think he said well some of this was was trying to come from a good place and try to handle things in a good way and it was the wrong thing to do but it wasn't done maliciously or with criminal intent to where it was it was trying you to help things. It didn't right backfired and I think a sampled the former as outfielder Who somebody that I covered and respect a lot is very close friends with Kappler and he said the fact that this incident happened at all? Not The fact that it's been publicized that it's been a problem for him but the fact that this incident happened and and was And Kappler feels like he did mishandle at has really kind of crushed him and been very difficult for him because he has had that background with domestic violence advocates at advocating for victims of domestic violence rape. But but again I find it odd that if you have that in your background and you've have those connections In your faced in a decision making capability with how do you handle it. What's the right thing to do? You don't turn to those resources instead you go out over your skis as he said it and try to do it on your own instead of knowing that there is a huge network I mean I've had this this issue with other sports franchises including the forty niners about not tapping into these resources. That are are available and WanNa help in wanted WANNA guide organizations through this this messy ugly situation So it just seems odd that he had that background and yet didn't tap back into it sometimes. A little knowledge is actually a dangerous thing. I think I've familiar with domestic situations. I know you know. This woman. Allegedly had had been assaulted by two women and physically And I think he was thinking. Well this is Domestic violence situation oldest step in and handle this and obviously it was not turned out later. She you know there were accusations of sexual assault and Yeah it was I. It was not his place to to do that when I talked to a realized I talked to him and asked asked him. Do you have a daughter because I mean I have a daughter and I can't imagine suggesting that a teenage girl sit down with two men who were There when she was is being assaulted and videotape and videos. I mean diligent. Yeah so I mean I mean the whole thing is is messy and ugly and And sample may be right. It may have tortured him. But it only came to stick came to light in February right And we know how it came delight. Obviously there was a disgruntled former employee. Who who made sure people knew about this but be that as it may the fact that these Kappler admits that these two incidents happened in in his unhappy about the way he handled them in? So I don't know you know. He was a candidate for the dodgers job. I don't know this handling handling with disgust. Obviously that's the same as Asian. I don't know if it ever came up when he was a candidate for the phillies job. And and then it came out in February. And now you you know so. It's it's relatively fresh. which is one of the reasons? It's being rehashed Even though these things happen for years ago they've only been known about since you know in the last last seven months. Well it was a very strange strange strange press opening press conference he no. There's very few as you mentioned. There's only thirty of these jobs The giants have had had so few of them. The these openings come up and then you spend the majority of the press conference talking about this. This topic is very very strange. I talked talked to numerous former teammates. Kappler's people who know him pretty well Today and Two guys declined to talk not not out of from from my. You know just didn't have time but everyone else that I spoke to was incredibly enthusiastic. The level of passion a little commitment. The you know how knowledgeable and Quick he has to learn. What do you think just in terms of him? Put this incident the side and the way he handled it and potentially decision making with with that with do you think of him sheerly as a potential manager. Well I mean that we don't know from one we don't know because we don't know what decisions he'll be making right. I mean that's the big thing I mean he's going to be. You did ask that. He's he's not really beat around the Bush you basically ask. Are you going to be a puppet. I think I might have but so obviously obviously far on his controlling the roster The new guy the new general general manager might be making out the lineup. I mean what. So he's GonNa be taught you know dealing with the clubhouse dealing with the chemistry and it was interesting hearing him. Talk about Changing the culture and getting being the culture right and looking behind me at buster Posey who kind of had this bemused look on his face and I just wanted to know what was going through. His head is like you know like I've been here. Well well we had a pretty good culture. It's kind of all about having really good players right so I mean I know that with the phillies did a lot of unconventional things. People blame him for sure Some things that went wrong including Cousins injury which is too bad I know that You know they. They are considered to have underachieved And they tailed off badly at the end of both seasons which to me is always a bad sign about how eighteen is connecting and and how cohesive it is I I don't think the giants are going to be very good next year and so it's one thing to not be very good under Bruce Bochy. It's another thing to not be very good under Gabe Kaplan and I don't know how you know ardy swaths of empty seats for the last two years. I just don't know I don't on how it's GonNa how it's going to go over. Yeah and I wonder how long the leashes you know that they if they aren't going to be very good which they probably shouldn't be like. What are the expectations for him? Realistically now he did say he was going to rely on. Buster Posey A lot. He's talked to Bruce Bochy. I think he feels like he can go. Bruce Bocce with the questions and has had an has house them for him. He's got run motus he's got Ron Modus back. Which makes you know makes fans feel good of a million face? I think we were all in favor of that So but it is going to be interesting He is a polarizing figure. There's no doubt about that. And he always has been he's always been sort of people either love him or they can't stand. I'm Kinda Guy I ask Sam fold about that and Sam said that's his because he's got such a big strong personality opinionated he's not afraid to state his opinions ends but he also listens like he will. You can talk him out of a position if you give him the facts and and you convince him You know he's not. He's not a dummy that's for sure but now does have a big strong right. Now any any comes with words I mean from his detractors call him narcissistic and arrogant Polarizing so so. It's just interesting because those are not words that have been associated with the person who has held this position right in the past down. This is not the I mean yes. It's one thirty jobs but just because it's the giants and they haven't had any that many over the last thirty five years it's not like is not becoming the pope or something thank you smoke. I saw smoking no baseball. It is but it is one with a pretty strong lineage H. and and the and the truth is Now no offense to buster but I mean because far haunt you know is a pretty low key keith guy. Because Larry Baird's now in a much reduced position on Cape Kepler's can be the face of the team and a high. I don't know how that goes over either. You know I mean I mean there is no I mean Bruce Bocce Gut Gut Kinda lucky because even though people aren't super excited when he first got here. Timmy had already you kind of become the face of the team So you know there was there. I don't know it's just. It's a whole different era. Yeah well it's GonNa be interesting to to gauge on my behalf for from far from the other side. This hour Bob. Melvin is now the height of stability yet longest serving manager right right now so that keeps going all right and Killian. "Welcome to the San Francisco. Chronicle's giants splash. PODCAST I'm your host for once not Henry Shulman it's me Susan's lesser Filling in while Henry is a much deserved vacation in well. John Shea is at the baseball General Manager meetings in Scottsdale and killing and I covered the Gabe Kappler press conference the introduction of the new giants manager a which was certainly an unusual press conference and you and I have attended many oppressor introducing a manager or a new player in new executive and this one Before you're GonNa Questions were even asked journal Manage Team President Farm on safety Address the allegations of dodgers players assault against an underage girl and also another woman That occurred while he and gave copper. We're both with the dodgers. Kappler was in charge of the the dodgers minor league system. At the time you have written about this topic COUPLE OF TIMES A. You're obviously writing about it again. And you asked asked numerous questions during the press conference about it What's your takeaway from the way the giants handle this today? And how surprised were you first with the press conference and and really just with the with the hiring altogether given this what we know about these incidents. Well I I gotta say. I'm a little surprised at the higher We've been hearing Gabe Kaplan. It was named for weeks now as soon as he got fired from the phillies even maybe even before he got fired when his his fate was kinda hanging in the balance because everyone knew he had a relationship ship with far Han but because these allegations which surfaced last February even they took place in two thousand fifteen but they really came to light late last February in a couple of different national publications and We you know I think given the difficulties. The giants silence have had with not only their on field performance but some of the off field issues surrounding Larry Baer surrounding the majority owner. Charles Johnson Just the fact that they're lose. They've lost a chunk of their fan base. People have gotten very disillusioned with the team and it just seemed like an odd time to hire a guy who comes with a lot of baggage and a lot of Highly sensitive baggage of issues that That are or not very palatable to people regarding sexual assault and how it was handled which speaks to his decision making to be quite frank. It's not just that these things took place but it was was did he make the right decisions And and then you add on top of it the fact that he was a major league manager and not a very good one and in had to really underachieving seasons in Philadelphia and There were other candidates and so I am surprised that they hired him and then again. I am surprised I'm not surprised by the tenor of the press conference. Because you knew it was going to be like this. You knew when far Hawn had a conference call last night you knew. When he went on the radio this morning you knew when he opened the press conference with remarks addressing what happened in the dodgers Farm system for years ago Still it was a hour long Interrogation really not a coronation Russian. And you know you've you grew up here in. You know the team you cover has had. It's not recently but has changed managers Alive in recent years. The giants have had such stability at that position. They've had four managers in thirty five years saying Roger Craig Dusty. St Baker Philippe illu the shortest tenure. With I think six years and then Bruce Bocce and and to have All this controversy following on the heels of all that goodwill that Bucci left behind is just. It's very odd it is. It was a strange press conference. I mean I guess you could argue that if Farhan is willing to make a higher under these circumstances knowing. There's going to be some uproar that they're going to be a lot of questions asked he's either very very convinced. This is the right guy for the job Even more so than he might have been for anyone else because he knew this was coming and it can't be an easy position to be in And and you would hope extremely convinced that the things he's saying. I E that he thought that Kappler Handled that as well has he could have at the time now. They've both said. They wished they had handled things differently. In retrospect they wish they had consulted with outside experts. They I wish they had been more supportive of the victims Kappler you have criticized him for trying to set up sort of a meeting between the alleged inch perpetrator and the underage victim. Who at the time? Kappler did not know that there was any allegation of sexual assault that was later she had allegedly at that time been assaulted by another woman and it was filmed by dodgers player. That was So to make that clear at the time that was his working knowledge but he did try to mediate a session between them which he spent and he really kind of said today that that was Non Yeah not. That was not really what he should have. I've been doing so I think he's learned a lot from it and clearly not just far Han but the rest of the giants brass are convinced that lessons were learned. And that's enough and I guess they feel like the incident Get something that. They're willing to overlook the wrong word. But certainly it's not enough to have kept them from hiring well and the the thing that you know more and more has come to light during this process. Is They have to overlook it or else. They have to hold far haunt accountable accountable too because Farhan was also a decision maker in that process with the dodgers. He was one of the guys that that Kappler reported up the chain to Oh and was also involved in not going to the police in punting it to the legal team in the legal team was basically You know duck and cover hover was their strategy and and you know they didn't inform authorities and and so You know I think that it's weird. It makes a a weird bond Between Kappler and far Han that they had each other's back back then when they had to make this they they were making. What many would consider the wrong decisions? And now they're going to be decision makers here with the giants and sure so. I'm sure there's trust between the two some of them and learning processes between the two of them. But I don't know how well that's GonNa be viewed from the outside like. Can you trust their decision making together. I also also You know and you and I have. We're we're both women. Obviously we've both been working in this business for about the same amount of time which is a hell of a long time and you know I just. It's just kind of familiar scenario. You know you. When when incidents of domestic violence or sexual assault happen they dr trivialized or overlooked or kind of swept away when they happen then if they kinda resurface or someone's held accountable then there's a whole bunch chipper hand wringing and apologizing? You know talk about lessons learned and all of that and then everyone goes on with their business anyway. Like people aren't really held accountable. Well let's say in this case in one of the things that is a little bit different than some of these others was an far. Home was very clear about this and emphasized at numerous times. There was no effort certainly by Kappler to cover anything up. You know what I went up the chain. He has not denied anything Certainly anywhere along the line So the fact that there wasn't any purported cover up or anything like that Maybe it was just massive massive naievety. Yeah perhaps and it feels that way it feels like naievety and which is weird because it was four years ago. We're we're not talking about like nineteen sixty five or even nineteen ninety-two. We're talking about a world in which Ray Rice had just you know been caught on video a year earlier punching punching his his fiancee. I mean we we. It's not like this happened in in the dark ages and so sometimes when I I appreciate people have saying lessons learned and we're going to be better and do better but it's like really. That was not very long ago and they were grown men making decisions about this at the time and it just felt like they were protecting you know the players. which are you know? "Where the giants gore right now Hey guy Bruce Bochy who but not a demand is back in the mix one of the last fully autonomous managers you know Joe Maddon is is an analyst guy was on for front of it where the giants going now maybe not to the day Kapler extreme well maybe to the Gabe Kapler street as of there's been talk that he is own list of giants guys to be talked to if he has been talked to already wasn't just did they say bad was three for twelve so it was it is a three for between rival between twelve and fifteen yeah here is good in the make I was surprised only in three years then they only yet in the only given five they give a five or a little over five in Chicago was it like five press was five it was definitely five year gap I think it was five for twenty eight I'm not positive but if you take a little bit of a pay cut that kind of shows you where things are at right now percent and the angels the cost was it it it it matters before he managed in in Detroit short I. N. I don't even know you learn there because it was a very much it was really a winnable situation there that he had one good year but I have to go back and look but getting your rate of just because of of is it has its shortcomings this year was because they wanted a bad back they were they wanted a guy who had been there done that he did it with the with the rays one did win the big one and then when the big one with the with the cubs and they probably hired they probably they had no idea they can get rid of us was because they didn't think the cubs get rid of bad luck the cubs made out of got rid of mad it except for the cubs just they ran into a brick wall the last three weeks of the season they were brutal they they couldn't win is they can get away and go when night nope not gonna win at either in the Milwaukee could lose I mean who would have thought that would the odds of that have been Milwaukee making their playoff cubs don't after your guides or gets hurt down that going to happen but it did not so easy falls out of favor there and let go and he gets to go to the Anaheim where you want to go he wanted to go there they wanted him there that's the reason they got rid of them but if you're not gonna see that that's one of the reasons they said you won't see boshi this year because no one's going to want to paying that much

"Went with the ninety four W. I'd be in for and it's been a busy one this morning as we look back on some interesting comments Macklin tack and Gabe Kapler over the last couple of days it really gave cappers the most surprising part about all this because Gabe Kapler has just been he's basically if the Buddha was a manager I mean really I would imagine there's incense in the clubhouse in this little water falls on his desk and you throw a pebble in a pond when you walk in the room like you know it's it's something about Gabe Kapler it it's got this funky vibe to it that it's that old California you know U. T. there's a spirit to Gabe Kapler and he's well established it too really strong criticism since he got here and now for the first time we're starting to see him place criticism and I think that's a massive and jarring distinction to see from Gabe Kapler in the timing of it is very curious as well we're gonna talk about all that because it starts a couple of days ago after the trade deadline when mac clin tack he he sets the tone here he's the general manager of the organization and he says basically I have no accountability for what goes on with this team the rest of the way I've done what I can here's Matt talking about all the great additions that he's made today is the culmination of two months of of roster building and you know starting with J. Bruce and then Brad Miller and then I should write this down I have in my pocket I'll try to remember them but yeah it's time that you know obviously more recently was Morin and Parker in the bull pen and it was smiling Vargas in the rotation a deaf player like Logan Morrison I don't even know if we've announced but we acquired danced really today in a small trade with with the Orioles for cash considerations he'll go to triple a so there you go Macklin tech naming all these different people it's a season it's not just a single day it's a couple of weeks and months to gather and so all of those little moves the Macklin tax may have been enough that if he's not responsible for anything that happens here he's done his job that's what Macklin tech told you loud and clear and he has said it before and and so here's the other thing that he said before this is mac contact talking about his star players you've all heard me say this before for this team to accomplish what it wants to accomplish we're gonna need the stars in that room to carry us and we have the talent and we we met we had a very splashy offseason we brought in a lot of talent and those guys are going to have to do what they do to put us in L. to push us into October yeah he's putting it on the star players you say I've made all these moves look all these pieces I made a made like a different trades for all the spare parts and so I build a Ferrari and it's on the star players to be the engine that drives this thing somewhere I totally disagree but that's Macklin tack pushing responsibility for all this aside and saying Hey I've done my job and the V. really surprising thing here is the person that said I completely agree with that statement I've done everything I can and this is on the players to get us to the playoffs here's none other than Phillies manager Gabe Kapler one of the things that stands out to me is is what Matt said either yesterday or a couple of days ago about how if we're going to be the team that we expect to be our stars are gonna curious and you know JT is one of our stars Gabe Kapler who hates criticism with a passion the same way oil hates water mac clin tack Gabe Kapler have now decided together they're going to blame the star players how significant is that when Gabe Kapler a guy who makes everything positive coal Irving goes into a game where it's five to one against the Braves in I I mean I get why he was out there it's not about why he was in there whether contact occurred rather Kapler was right the moment but Cole Irving goes out there against the Braves he gets crushed any game that the Phillies really could have used that win they get the mostly get blown out it's the sixth inning gave Capper after that games as color of it we had a lot of confidence a color but he's been great recently which is just flat out not true that to me that's okay cappers bit and now he's saying I agree with the general manager that the it's on the star players here they need to be the guys to carry this team in sense I've done what I can hear I've done my job and that's just not true and in my kid Angelina's producing the show might give some thoughts on this yet what if he now hold ever admit this but what if it's also and indirect way of admitting that it is his fault so that's why the stars of the bill now it's because he didn't provide enough depth with it with the pitching staff both starting in starters and bullpen the the benches then you know it's been a disaster up until they got Brad Miller Jeepers which is very proud to point out yes so maybe saying like the stars in the go bell him in the the death out well yeah because he isn't coach those guys up enough and the other thing is his assistance having coached him up enough either right because Gabe Kapler couple months ago or a month ago or so you they were playing they had that series just before the Mets they're struggling they're playing horribly and it's like all right Gabe what about firing somebody on your coaching staff and this was Gabe Kapler a different answer for you today that I had yesterday with the right person on the room we're continuing to refine and work on our processes and our practices so the work we do leading up to the game has to improve you know I think the last thing I'd say about that is nobody's gonna out house was nobody's gonna work us prior to the game to get campers and fired anybody hasn't blamed anybody on his coaching staff yes and blamed himself and now he's going to say it's on the players players that the star player specifically not the offense as a whole and I think that's an important distinction to make Gabe Kapler says it and when he echoes Macklin tack Macklin tax said it himself as well it's not the offense it's the star players that's where they're putting the accountability but here's the interesting element here Gabe Kapler goes out and criticize the star players you mentioned the aid these are the guys that have to do it he also very recently in the same it really the same press conference he goes out after the giants game yesterday and he talks about his lead off hitter he criticizes got care we're looking for more consistent high quality at bats the first about of the game when we can get him we were able to get that for a little while and that's no disrespect anyone individual it's just something that we're looking for yeah that's what he says but we all know how give Capper speaks Gabe Kapler will tell you the Rangers swore as the greatest leave this ever lift the throne you some of his pitches are just the most beautiful page you'll ever see I drew Smyly and cliff Lee are exactly the same god you know that's that's K. capital so when he's going on say yeah our lead off fitting is good enough that's interesting and by the way he says the star players of not being good enough that's pretty interesting he changes the line up that's pretty interesting and it all happens after the trade deadline when mac clin tackle does what accountability doesn't give cap or any help and so why is it that now Gabe Kapler decided he's going to start being more vocal about the problems on this team do you feel that he's on the hot seat a little bit that's the most logical conclusion I can come to this team was at a major crossroads moment and management decided they were going to sell out on this thing we're not gonna bother we're just gonna get Corey Dickerson has gotten injured hamstring and dance Strela who's in triple way and that's gonna be it we're gonna be satisfied with that we're gonna wait till next year essentially is the nationals going to add three people the bull pen as the Braves going to add three people the bull pen Phillies are making those moves and so they're blaming the star players now star players the criticism that you can have is that it's more tangible it's emotional it's energetic those are the kinds of things that you're not seeing from the Philly stars Aaron nola Bryce Harper Reese Hoskins real Muto sick Gora those guys are not rah rah guys they're not the people you're seeing has there been a closed door meeting with this team no nothing like that and so the Phillies have just sort of coasted by N. Kapler has set that tone again cap or not taking accountability is putting it on the players and so what I think is interesting is that while you're looking at the Phillies in a manager that very well likely realizing now that he's on the hot seat the team that struggling and falling behind in the playoff race well we on the other side of the equation right across the street you've got a guy in Carson Wentz Jason Kelsey was speaking about him yesterday he's as hungry as ever not a feeling of difference cautions incredibly intrinsically motivated guy he's been not just for its own sake of the energy he brings were really from an offer to just change the competitive person that he is rubs off on everybody else and isn't it exciting to get him on the field in just a couple of days next Thursday eagles and tightens we're about to go man I mean Broncos and falcons played last night the hall of fame game first NFL preseason game of the year it's football season we're getting a game every single week until February and that's an exciting feeling you can't wait to see what the eagles are gonna do a team that has accountability team that has leadership team and has consistent veterans I mean it's just that the Phillies they don't have that it starts with accountability and you look at the manager and you look at the general manager and you look at the present and they just don't want to accept it and they're going to put on the players instead who has more responsibilities of the players is the manager is it the general manager I think it's pretty obvious who and so Gabe Kapler feel a little hot on that seat and he should we'll see how.

BIG3 basketball 2019: How to watch Week 6 of Ice Cube's 3-on-3 league on CBS Sports Network

"Five one nine eight nine nine two two six Clinton facts tonight Morales against Nova are pre game at five thirty Chris had a very Korean Danny with the play by play at six ten points won the opener on Thursday three home runs for Nelson Cruz that was a home runs in four consecutive games he adds another one last night mags Kapler a three run bomb early twins crew six to the final and good pitching performances out of burritos end of big money Mike Pineda went seven innings last night once again twins when it's six to two so we'll see your progress can I keep the starters on a role for the twins more on that a little bit later on Minnesota United FC bad connection this long your Eric you know they talk about MLB pitchers and catchers go to camp the end of February the game start now end of February but there's no doubt the balloon started training way back in the winter months they started out on the road in March this season runs through October yeah they have their own marathon going on and really right now it's two seasons in one remember Minnesota United has reached the semifinals of the U. S. open Cup which is played during the regular season of MLS and they're gonna play Portland in a few weeks in the cop but of more importance is what they've got going on tonight at the soccer cathedral known as Ollie ons feel they will host the Vancouver Whitecaps Vancouver twenty points tied for last in the MLS west they are winless in their last ten matches all six and four Minnesota by the way thirty four points and right there in the thick of the playoff chase in the M. L. S. west of course the wounds of never made the postseason and Stevie T. if you count MLS matches and U. S. open Cup play menu has an eight game on beacon street dating back to early June so on paper this looks like a slam dunk a lay up you'll pick your analogy but these are the games that can be dangerous they need to clean three here they don't get a clean three they could drop in the standings quickly yeah and that is quite a story considering how dreadful they were on the road in years one and two in Major League Soccer they they have certainly found the right formula on the road it is it is a good story and I think apply all appearance I would reward these fans really been on board since the days and blame when they played in the north American soccer league and made the move to MLS and once again Ali on field continues to get rave reviews and they they've been able to improve the product in there was a lot of talk of between year two and year three in the move Dalian's feel and how they needed upgrade any you've got to give Adrian heath well I think was on the hot seat many ogle's probably on the hot seat doctor bill McGuire the majority partner right the the front man if you will for Minnesota United FC is a competitive guy and they needed to improve so not only it's just new stadium that's gonna wear off at some point in time you have to have a winning product this sports market is way too competitive and there's a lot of people that know the sports market Chris right came over from the timber wolves now is the president over there they know that it is hard to maintain that you know once you build the base putting a product on the field that wins games is very important yeah it's it's a saturated sports market no doubt about it the pie is sliced into a lot of smaller pieces with the exception of the purple that's the total eclipse of the sun when the Minnesota Vikings or start playing as they have now in training camp but I I think your point is well taken yeah they knew they were going and Ali on field this season there would be a honeymoon with the new venue and they've sold out all the MLS matches but guess what they need to make the postseason and now they've been playing well enough for the fan base is suddenly saying yeah we expected because if you look at the team Minnesota United came in with two years ago it Lana United FC they won the Cup last year they were averaging seventy thousand fans a game down at Mercedes Benz stadium so their expansion because in Atlanta already has won the Cup LA F. C. came in last year and L. A. S. C. has quickly morphed into a power in MLS so if you compare Minnesota United to recent expansion teams the bar of expectation is high and I realize every franchise goes about building a team a different way Minnesota United been a little more conservative in in the way they've allocated in gold out their cash but it's time to cash in on your right about bill McGuire he he knows they got to get it done because this honeymoon will landed Ollie ons but what a wonderful venue it is in Vancouver's there tonight and don't forget on September third Megan Rapinoe Alex Morgan and company the U. S. women the World Cup winners times too we'll be here to play Portugal in that victory tour that's gonna be a fun night yeah and and Megan do in interviews talk show appearances why not I exactly I I know I'm gonna try to get out there and see that match I I might even get an Alex Morgan Jersey in where I love Alex Morgan here's the thing about Major League Soccer go they they've been in this period of rapid expansion of rapid growth they they finally reached critical mass of fuel causes leagues been around awhile and they finally got to the point where teams are building facilities white collar young's field they've they want to get on board they want to get into the mix but the simple fact of the matter is that they're getting good players but it's still not a league that both the best players in the world and going forward for me that this challenge because when it comes to American football as players in the world are in the NFL they're not in the CFL they're not playing overseas the NBA the NHL M. L. B. the one thing you can say and for that matter the PGA tour you could argue that there are quality players on the European tour there are quality players on the Asian tour but as a whole the best players in the world are on the PGA tour so when it comes to American sports I believe that's a gigantic challenge for M. L. as in Major League Soccer going forward because they can't say that that the best players in the world there there are good players there are maybe some players that had great careers Wayne Rooney comes to mind who plays here but he's he's on the downside of his career that's the challenge from melos going forward they can't say with the other leagues can say no and eventually I I think they're going to have to get to that level it's going to take a while they're there sure of these new soccer specific venues has helped because what you have or wonderful facilities that are fan friendly and I I think the athletes like performing in them but it but but you have major leagues in Italy you have up the army ranger leagues in Spain and drive in America and then of course the premier league all you yeah that's exactly right so it's going to be a much bigger challenge to get to the point that point on some level where you can say yup we have the best players in the world or some of the best players in the world I don't think I'm as can say they are not yet wind in Britain for me that's that's a challenge competing in in the big picture in the Markham what's they will need at some point in time by the weather up to twenty four franchises right Austin Texas comes in next year so they're gonna get a football club as they like to say Miami with David Beckham is part of the ownership group now there's a little splash for you back bend it like Beckham so he'll be down in South Florida that's going to put him up to twenty six and I know there are other cities they want in on this like Detroit I think San Diego was expressed in San Diego and I don't know so yeah there are a number of others but well as it could get to thirty right now I think that's probably pretty much that's kind of the number N. B. A.'s at thirty NHL's thirty one NFL's thirty two M. L. B.'s thirty right gel soon to be thirty two yes yeah the Seattle Sakai's that's what I'm hoping they're called but it but here's my point eligible make one they're gonna need at some point to you know kind of a get into what you were touching on Stevie T. if you go back in time this is old school but what put the AFL on the map with the NFL getting guys like Joe Namath and Bobby bell and taking them from the NFL so MLS is gonna need to do that at some point and get some starts from the European premier league or elsewhere and have them come over here to the states and in Canada there's a few teams in Canada as well my opinion not gonna happen not gonna happen in your life times not gonna happen in my lifetime not gonna happen in any of your kids lifetimes the reason why is because this country is I wouldn't say they're fractured with their resources but you talk about other countries around the world what is the number one sport what is the number one athletic endeavor that is in most of these countries around the world it is not basketball it is not American football it is not baseball is not hockey it is it is international football it is soccer and you are not going to have the ground swell that you would in England or Spain or Germany or Brazil or Australia or Japan for most of these other sports then you will for international football they are there's just nothing the yeah these these the papers over there if if you have a cricket match a rugby match that'll that'll garner some headlines football F. U. T. B. O. L. is going to be the main source of your sports page it's not going to be the M. L. B. home run chase is not going to be the patriots going for another Super Bowl it's not going to be whether lebron James can make the Lakers a title contender it is going to be soccer yeah so I I agree Jonathan we we are not going to get to that level in this country it would it would just not an astronomical financial package and also recruiting somebody with the pitch of come over here and raise the level of the MLS with your name your they they would need the the money that you would need to get for them for that you're not get yes you're gonna get probably two three four five times that in Europe people like Cristiano Ronaldo Leonardo messy little messy is one the best players in the world and he's from Argentina they can't get him to stay in Argentina and Brazil and that area Chile that part of the world and they are soccer mad that's because the money is in Europe not going to get that kind of money I anywhere else on the globe I I can remember when the Vikings played the Steelers in twenty thirteen in London and I went over to the UK and the day before I saw Chelsea and Tottenham played the old Hotspur venue and we walked through the player's parking lot on our way out of the stadium and while what they drive I thought it was impressive what I've seen at winter park in the TCM Lamborghinis yeah whatever the thing he's rolls Royces porches I was like holy buckets these guys are doing well in into you know what Jonathan is saying about the coverages true because after that Viking Steelers game at Wembley the twenty thirteen game another break is but the Browns as well over there and it was a great game at eighty thousand fans next day pickup the London tabloids it's all soccer I mean all soccer some rugby I know it about page thirty there was a story on the Steelers in the Vikings and blind I know commissioner Goodell didn't like it but that's the way it is three twenty one here at C. Minnesota Twins hit 5 homers, turn triple play in 8-6 win vs Yankees

"River Edwin Encarnacion ground into a triple play the top half of the first and then see see see about the but the Yankees in the early hold against the twins strong on John sterling news me four homers total blasted off the Vatican is four innings of work in between a three run third for Minnesota is well on their way to an eight six victory at target field nothing really went right for so bad yeah I mean it is what it is you know of some cell contact with a lot of hard times as an item so you know look to be better in a sign of these in the area up to four and a half twenty two homers allowed in eighty six innings well on his way to a career high in that category Mitch Garber three for for couple homers as the leadoff spot for the first place twins Max Kapler blasted his twenty fifth Nelson Cruz his twenty handle is expected with their ability to hit the ball in the ballpark obviously you would hope that you will be able to keep it inside but knowing how much power they have an outlet well I mean it's not what I expected I mean I I know they're capable obviously would you think is it what I find interesting would you guys think so Minnesota it's a town home runs yep like everybody does and I don't know this are they capable of scoring in other ways from the standpoint of when they get to a post season baseball is coming in cold there yeah and you think about Minnesota in October the bulls are going to be I know the ball might be quote unquote Jews fine but the it's not gonna be as warm all take a look at the April numbers and if they were hit home runs in April there than I guarantee they can hit him in October two yeah I guess is already thinking that that's true they do lead the majors in home runs eight game this season with five or more only the second team in history to do that join us in nineteen seventy seven red Sox Yankee long balls from a make you void enter Shelagh Gary Sanchez and Erin Hicks though for ten five strikeouts combine to make the final two out to the game representing the go ahead run at the plate and Sancious still in this prolonged funk at the plate when you get your bed she got it you got to put in play with authority and that's just one thing he's not doing right now talking about Sanchez Kyle Gibson to make over mon the starters tonight with a pregame coverage under way at

Philadelphia Phillies' Gabe Kapler calls on reliever who hasn't thrown

"And replay has just gotten way way out of control more than anyone thought was necessary that should have been a win win for the tigers and the pirates ended up winning thirteen to ten in thirteen innings i didn't see this yesterday but i heard about the phillies avenue manager gabe kaplan and he's like a lot of these new managers never been a manager before younger guy analytically driven you know that's the new wave right maybe gave kaffir should have had a little managerial experience because yesterday in atlanta he brought in a pitcher that hadn't been up in the bullpen and it's a little unclear exactly what happened but the umpire allowed the pitcher to take more warmup tosses the the quote from jerry lane the crew chief for whatever reason the picture wasn't even getting ready who got crossed up i'm not placing blame on anybody because i don't know but he wasn't ready hadn't thrown a pitch and the last thing i want to do is get somebody hurt so he let him throw more pissed off the braves manager he ended up getting the jackson gabe kappler said afterwards any time we have a miscommunication that miscommunication is my responsibility so i take full responsibility for it i mean it's third game as bigly manager and you bring a pitcher into the game who was sitting out in the bullpen and not thrown a single warmup pitch that ain't good we got these new ally of all these new managers most of them have had no manager experience aaron boone hadn't even been a coach anywhere a broadcaster and they're doing a lot of different things and aaron judge playing center field and he might even be batting leadoff would seems kinda crazy and you know we saw the astros using four outfielders i saw the other day and it actually work because it was a fly out and they moved bregman out to the outfield but that's kind of crazy we see a lotta pitchers batting eighth in the order now i know tampa bay is considering using a bullpen for an entire game every fifth day having a four man rotation and then every fifth day just using the bullpen i mean i'm i'm fine with taking a look at things and just because things have been done one way for a.
