"Morning here in the Bay Area early afternoon along the shores of the Allegheny River in the Steel City, the final game, the Jazz playing Pittsburgh this year, the Giants and the Pirates Game four of the four game series. Starting lineups for this room will start with the James who had a late change to the line up. You heard Gabe Kapler even just a few minutes ago on our pre game show. Talking about some of the players who were in there for the Giants. And since that conversation, the lineup change Brandon Belt who is still just not 100%. And it's a concern for the James because he is so important to their offense belt was scratched with the side tightness still lingering, James, You're gonna have to figure out a way to get him a few days of rest. Maybe something like that to see if they could get that thing cleared up because Even the last couple of games. I think you could see he was compromised with the way he was playing. Just not 100% belt was in there, but now he's not. Here is what the Giants lineup looks like. Mike Talk Hman. He's in center field hitting leadoff Mikey Stransky, the right fielder. Bad second Buster Posey doing the catching, hitting third Alex Dickerson off the injured list today. That's real good news for the James. He's in the cleanup spot now with no belt in there. Evan Longoria, third baseman banning fifth. Brandon Crawford, the shortstop hit six Darren Rough, will take belts Place and play first base hit seven for the Giants. Mauricio du Bon Second basement and eighth place hitter and the starting pitcher for the Giants Guy who's just done a terrific job. The left hander Alex would It'll be a six start of the year would is four. No with a 180 earned run average, tremendous pitching. By Alex would Meanwhile, the Pirates to straight walk off wins against the Giants in the last two nights. Very tough Jan's losses. Adam Frazier will hit leadoff, the National League's hits leader. At second base. Batting first. Kevin Newman, the shortstop, Bad second. Brian Reynolds, former James Minor Leaguer in center field. He hits third, Jacob Stallings, the catcher and the cleanup hitter. One of the heroes from last night. Well, Craig, first basement, batting fifth. Gonzalez. Third Basement hits six, then the lineup today. Chi Tom in left field, batting seventh. Troy Stokes Junior is the right fielder on the eight places her in the starting pitcher. Four. Pittsburgh is the right hander Mitch Keller. He bats night Keller over all this year's been a real up and down season for him. Seven starts a 781 earned run average. Despite that, when he's been good, he's actually been really good. Just had some blow up starts for the Pirates. Mitch Keller on the mound. Former second round draft biggie is important. He's for them. They're trying to get him right. He'll pitch against the Giants here this afternoon. So those are your lineups. The umpires for this game. Cory Blazer, the home plate umpire, Eric Backus at first Tom Hallion, the crew chief. It's second Mark Ripper, Jer the umpire. Along the third base line. This'll copyrighted broadcast is presented by authority of the San Francisco Giants may not be reproduced or retransmitted. In any form. The accounts of descriptions of this game may not be disseminated. Without the express written consent of the San Francisco Giants looks like just a little bit of breeze blowing through Pittsburgh at the moment, it is overcast. James manager Gabe Kapler also told us that but this morning it looked like it was going to stay at best sort of partly sunny, something like that. And so I think that does help the hitters. We've seen how the glare In this ballpark can be tough for hitters, especially in the late afternoon early evening shouldn't be as big of a deal in the mid afternoon like today's game, But still, I think the hitters will appreciate just a little bit overcast. If it stays around. That's what it looks like. It started The game today from PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Beautiful sight with Clemente Bridge connecting the ballpark side of town with downtown. There's lots of boats out on the Allegheny River today. Right near the confluence of the three Rivers. PNC Park, one of the most picturesque ballparks in all of Major League Baseball, James B. And Cincinnati along the banks of the Ohio River, starting tomorrow for a four game series is the road trip continues big game today for the Giants trying toe Bounce back from two straight tough losses. Mitch Keller's ready to go and his first pitch to Mike Talk Man is a fastball right down the middle for a called Strike One talk. Hman had a nice game yesterday through a couple of walks, hit his second Giants home run. Waiting for the old one pitch from the right hander Keller and it's very high with a fastball one in 1105 Eastern time. First pitch time. 70 degrees in Pittsburgh seems just about perfect game time attempt..

"It was grounded out and reached on an air and really In some ways, singing that air is the most pivotal play in the game. So far tonight, it was Machado leading off the bottom of the fourth, hit a ball back of third. And Nolan are not a witch. Got it. It was a long throw, but a good throw, and he gets some of that air kind of Opened up. The floodgates says it were. The Padres scored four times. Yeah, it really should have been. I mean, it is a player. You look at that You're frustrated. You wear a lot of it on yourself, but you also have to have pictures, make pitches and not end up giving up four runs be different if there were two outs and he makes that air and It opens up the floodgates Great point, and there were three walks. Giving up by came in the bottom of the fourth as well. Two of them forced in a run now one Oh, breaking ball swung on and missed by Machado, a ball and a strike. He'll be followed by Jake Cronin Worth and then Tommy Fan 234 hitters in J Stingers lineup tonight. Tingler in his second year as the manager in San Diego. 11 of the way that's low ball to 99 from Cabrera, but he's having trouble finding the strike zone. On occasion. Tasting. Miller, one of the youngest managers around he's 40 years old, guided the Padres into the post season last year. 21 from Cabrera. Fastball, little bit inside of the belt Ball three. Jace Tingler looks like singing. You know, if all the managers had, like a chin up contest, I think he's in the he's knocking some guys out. He's gonna be in there a while. 31 and a swinging a foul back. Big cut there by Machado three and two. Tingler looks like he gets with Jim. Yeah, my top tip guys, big leagues. Gabe Kapler. Chase Tingler? Yeah, um Was, I think, and I just Lost my train of thought. I gotta throw Aaron Boone in there because he's probably listening. And he's probably thinking, you know. Yeah. What about me? I won't get out alive way. Don't quite tell us much is these guys great to swung on and missed Machado? Strikes out one down. That's great point of parents listening. He's probably you're right. One of his first thoughts is what about me? Yeah. You just wait for that text, you know to come off? Yeah. But, uh Yeah, He's a pellet on guy. I don't think he's I don't think he's in the final four. The final in a shit up contest, But he's a He's a pellet Tanaka. You know who else I got? Luis RoHaas, Mets manager. All right, jacked news. Jake Cronin worth on a breaking ball, Mrs. Inside Ball one. Oh, yeah, I bet you Mike Matheny's a little bit older than some of the guys were just talking about. Yeah, I bet you he could give the younger crowd a run for their money. Want toe and Cronin worth fouls back and knee high fastball one on one. Now we're talking about analyst. You're my God. I am God, I'm putting my money down on you. You got me over. Lucky I got you over Trucky. I got you over Kirk Chip. What now? I feel so much better about my workout routine. 18 thirsty. You have you and Kirch and getting a chin up contest. My money's on you, boy. We've gotten off track for two Padres over the Cardinals. Bottom of the fifth one down, and nobody on No North is over to on the night went three for four in last night's game. 11 and a swinging a fly ball to left center field, and that's going to drop for a base in before Bater could get there, And then he bobbled it on the bounds, but he recovers quickly enough to hold Cronin worth two along single. I'm a little surprised here, said Bater didn't lay out for that one, especially because it was a tweener in between. He and Tyler O'Neill and knowing you've got that back up there. If you're not able to love it. Because it was kind of up in the air for a good bit wasn't hit. Particularly hard. They had some time to run there. But he pulled up.

"Been fabulous. You slow down Reynolds and Frasier, I think you slow the pirates down. I do, too. And I You know, we talked to Gabe Kapler here coming up, and I just ran out of time. I meant to ask him about Adam Frazier because you know to me Adam Frazier. He's a problem on drily. The problem is, in some ways. He's not enough of a threat to where you're just out now pitching around him and saying, Oh, we can't let that guy beat us because he's not hitting a bunch of home runs. So you pitch to him. Then he gets the barrel of the bat on the ball. It's kind of a conundrum. They need to pitch him better. And maybe Alex Wood is the guy to do that. The thing about Alex, though, also is You know Reynolds when he switches round bat right handed that slider to the back foot of right handed hitters is just awesome. And so Alex is not just limited to dominating lefties. He's got that great weapon to get right, Anders out as well. And I think that's been a huge Key to his success. I can't wait to watch him pitch again. He's just he's just been fantastic. We actually set up a zoom within this week, which tells you all you need to know about 2021 because we wanted to talk to him and say I and check in with him and like basically introduced ourselves to it, which is sort of ridiculous, But he was so fun to talk to, and man when you I'm sure you've talked to him before, too. But he just wants to dive into the analytics and the technology to.

"About Chad Zerby like the way I believe they would youse guys is, you know, he's from a different generation of managerial mindset, Right? Like he was a guy who was like, Hey, if we have a hot and we have a guy who fits in this role, and I have a guy who can get me from the fifth to the eighth wonder of the Jim Brower come out there and throw three innings five times a week. Like on occasion, it felt like that would happen. And I think It was the year where you had a pitched upwards of 80 games or something. And Tyler Rogers right now, I think it's on a pace where you're gonna be close to 100, so I know that you can keep using it. But I actually do believe that if you were to move him into the closer role, you would throw him less frequently or Maurin frequently than you're using them right now, because he's the best arm. He's the Swiss Army knife, but the Giants have and so Gabe Kapler has to rely on him because he doesn't really have Many other right handers he can trust. He's not going toe Tonto. Matt Wisler. Sam Selman from the left side is not proving he can get out. So we talked about you know, identifying with the biggest problem is with right handed pitching out of the bullpen for the Giants and Tyler Rogers is the most consistent the most reliable the swinging this guy. Get your ground out. He can get you a strikeout. You can come in with guys on base. You can come in with a clean inning. He could do just about everything that's asked of him. So I don't blame Dave Chappelle for wanting to keep going to him. But you're right. It doesn't have that sort of belief. A allude Enbrau a vibe and we were talking the other name or from back and I about about Chad Bradford Susan's cluster of the Chronicle on how many times the A's used to use him, But I think there was a season where they used him like 68 times, which I guess is a little bit high, but not abnormal for reliever. But then he goes over to the Baltimore one here in the Orioles you some 78 times in a season, which is more Jim Brower like so Don't know for sniff 100 appearances with Tyler Rogers, but I think those appearances go down. If he's in the closer spot. I want to throw it off the Giants fans extra innings, the postgame show I interviewed National League umpire Ed Montague. We talk about balls and strikes. Replay talk about injuries. We talk about Joe West. So please tune into extra innings tonight after the game, but I want to stay with the umpires. And Mark Rip Inger yesterday just got to heat to their own at him by the Pirates manager gets tossed Strike zone was open. It was really tight. He was inconsistent, and I think that's what the players and managers want more of a consistency behind the plate. Hopes you saw the game. What did you think of that? Yeah, I mean, If you're noticing the Empire's felt like that, in any game, or any leads, or any sports, you never seeing the empires of the officials. It's not a great thing. Baseball is, I feel like they were noticing it, maybe more now than ever because of instant replay in because of the The They've changed the number of things you can argue, right? Like if you come out to argue balls and strikes that you're gonna get tossed pretty instantly. That's what we saw last night like you start chewing out an umpire for something he's like now, man. You can't argue that this is something that we're supposed to debate. The same thing can happen on an instant replay for Guy comes up to argue after instant replay review Your generally toss pretty quickly. They don't give you a long rope on that, because The thought is that we got right because we went to replace. So I think there's something lost in the game without having those those. You know we don't We don't need Lupin l out here throwing first space there or anything like that. But I think there's something fun about another fire. Sort of getting into it with a manager or Ah, head coach. Bill did you ever to out and umpire Did you ever get into it with with Ed Montague? Did he let you have it on the mountain? And it was really good. It was Bruce from Ng. He was the one that I used to always argue balls and strikes with it. And Terry Tate. It cost me a couple of times. He find me pretty much. They didn't toss me Find me for drilling and events like I had seen, like Andy Van Slyke and I I drill them four times. So at the end sooner later, they thought I was this head hunting for him. But he had a big mouth on him. So I just drilled him in the leg and the back and moved on. But no. You know umpires really communicated just on balls and strikes. Lee Wire was awesome. He was one of the best. And you could go right down the line. Oh of with a few of them, but no, you Noah's long as they communicate with you and you don't show him up and you don't have that catcher's head turning and they have communication. You get to know a little bit about him and you get to know their strike zone. So It's difficult now because of the box and I think that box needs to be removed because the strike zone isn't the same box at every hitter. You sort of cracked actually agree with you that fucking it's off line two. It's a different to different angle and lying to the plate that we're seeing from the center field camera depending on the stadium. You remember you just cracked me up there, Bill. You said Yeah. And Andy van place four times He had a big mouth and for some reason, they thought I was doing it on purpose. You caught me their CO c. You are awake this lorry doing a great job of defending yourself there, boy. He might have been right to run you. You know, those were much. Oh, that reminds me comes. Who's the guy who had it out for Omar Vizquel, who hit him every single time He saw him. Was it was it Jose Lima. There was some guy who we always would, you know? Oh, 607 there. I want a boy. He was on the Indians of a maid. For there You go. Good knowledge there, wrap it So they make up on. I believe I believe what happened was this is this is pretty cold. I think what happened with something basic off the World Series for the Indians in 1994 90 95 96. Somewhere in there might have been 97 might have been the Marlins here anyway. Oh, market Still afterwards, I think you wrote a book or he'd done an interview or something. And he said that when he looked into his into his eyes on the pitcher's mound, he knew that he didn't have it. So who's the maid forgot all upset with Omar has said every time I faced that I'm going to drill him, and if he charges the mound, I'm going to kill him, and I was a boy. That's pretty intense stuff, man. But you want to send you look into a man's eyes on the pitcher's mound, and you knew he didn't have it after he lost the World Series. I thought that was that was a little telling. I thought of what was going on in that clubhouse. That's great stuff comes arrives with the game. We play on our podcast Walk one, hit one and pitched the one That's always It's always my favorite. We should bring Omar Vizquel into that conversation. But thanks so much for joining us this morning and go back to bed. All right. Guys like breakfast in bed. That's what you need to do. Breakfast event. Great stuff. We love having him Adam Copeland. You can hear him every weekday morning on the leadoff spot. Five.

"And that there are people who have been you know. Isolated away from their families Income case in case you knock being able to go to work and so we are so lucky glass but it's you off the question. About what what. They got the most different. Yeah that's a great point but now we're closing in on Baseball twenty twenty one. And there's an expert expectation for better days and the hope is for one hundred sixty two games. Unlike last year was sixty. But you know we we know now. The fans will be at the ballpark at oracle at least in limited numbers. And you're getting the team ready. These are the final weeks going in the season. Opener is not far off. Wh what is your level of as we move forward is pretty high. I mean john as a Optimistic person in general. So i think any ending turn on continued out that racist. It's just natural for me. I got. I got dot for my dad. Who had a similar outlook and look forward to each day. So i gotta say. I'm that that naturally who i am in this particular case That elevated a little bit because we have vaccines in place and You know people around the country and around the world are slowly getting back any which is creating a level of confidence that we haven't we haven't seen in a little while and i think there is a bit of light light at the end of the end of the tunnel if we do things the right way Just having limited fans in the stands in spring training has been a huge boost to morale We'd love having our fans on the stand and just gotta hearing the cheers when something goes well and sometimes even hearing the dot. it's actually one thing And we missed that. We feel like we're in a partnership with the fans and they are a part of our team in many ways so we look forward to to oracle park with fans and they got going to be pretty at the mental moment. We're obviously everybody in the ballpark but for the place. Well this is wonderful. Thanks so much gay bud. We're all rooting for normalcy. Or something close to it Good luck moving forward enjoyed. "Had no idea that you know. We're hours away or day. Away from from a shutdown. But but you were about to enjoy a long-awaited scheduled day off thursday march twelfth but just curious on on your reflections going back a year. Yeah i remember that conversation about. Johnny cueto outgained concealed light. It was just yesterday. We wrapped up a pretty good game against the range osen and and discussed it. Just like you mentioned there was kind of exciting for me to announce Mike i opening day starter with giant than Honestly really seeing at that point and we understood that we were in a timeline. We're gonna to need to be really careful. But i don't think anybody really careful because of the virus but i. I don't think that anybody at that time was fully prepared for what was to come and i don't think anybody at that time. Thought that you know we were going to shut down But i think what that moment did for all of us in industry one in demonstrated how serious. This was how much attention it needed. And how we were going to need to be resilient together and really thorough guidelines protocols and health and safety earth which. I think we did a really nice job over the course of the summer and even to today after our spring training game day against the borough every day pretty seriously and i think a year ago jumping. You will do you remember where you were when you first either got notified or saw it online or With with your phone or whatever source you used to obtain that information or was it a phone call or how how and where were you Because yeah the club obviously to inform everyone to stay clear of scottsdale stadium and then it became clear. You know within a day or so. You know we're not playing ball and eventually people started going on. Yeah i know. I so i'm just kind of me. I don't remember how that information got. I assume it was be a text. Message from from sky errors or or from far on Because at that point it would be my responsibility to inform our field staff and in our club so that that's my assumption but honestly i don't remember it out permission. Can't i can tell you what what happened. After which was a matt scrambled to make sure that we got the information to all the parties that need lit assumes partial and we started making plans for You know what comes next and we knew that we wouldn't be playmate all anytime soon but we had no so You know we knew that we weren't going to be playing baseball. The next day was for sure and and that in itself was enough of. What's i guess looking back at. You pretty proud of maybe baseball. In general but more in particular the giants how how you as a franchise handled everything because it was so new to everybody. Yeah i am actually to. The giants handled things. I'm not proud of the way. The industry handle things a Around baseball who felt strongly that lobby. We weren't gonna make it through and I think there are people. And i remember talking to national writers more in in just conversations and they were privy to a lot of the information from the various clubs around the league thinking that we work in a start back up at all and so and at every turn there has been and continues to be a ton of uncertainty. And so that's why. I think it continues to be so So important that we continue to focus on health and safety protocols because we're just not out of the work and While it's really comforting to know that we have seen now that we can depend on and that we you know the johnson johnson doc the join moderna and pfizer. We're still we're still not out of the would that. I think we ought to be we. Continue to be dolgin. I don't want us to get overconfident. His point I think we have to take it. Zoos yeah we are A year removed To the day and in your mind how has change. I mean that's a pretty broad question but might there be one or two elements in the game on your mind that that's a year ago you would've said wow i never could have imagined that. Yeah i got two great question. I feel like we all mitt baseball the way we remember it and i ate without need for the ballpark like it was second home. And not coming to the ballpark peeling light. We ought to be really careful because really a major league clubhouse things but it's really a safe space for player players. It replaced to meet you. Eat out to bid socialized to empathize. Plan to strategize. And right now it doesn't feel like it. Did those things now feels like a place in get work done and get out as quickly as possible and i think in particular. I feel most for people around the game like wrong. Lords who really have come to expect the game to be certain way when. You're out the ballpark and that it just doesn't bring back or many of us for that matter. I don't want you know. Ron and others myself included. It doesn't bring saying rubble dot his faction. It certainly it certainly feels great to compete. And i feel walking. We all feel lucky to be at the ballpark every day. But it but it's not the same environment right now. So that doesn't feel that one day i think the biggest change that we're all we're all dealing and hey i just can't get enough that i know that we are all in air very privileged position.

"As class san francisco chronicle podcast on the giants. The oakland a.'s in major league baseball. I'm chronicle as writer. Matt kawahara today chronicle national baseball writer. John shea and i are looking back to one year ago when baseball abruptly shut down in the middle of spring training under the weight of the growing coronavirus. Pandemic as manager bob melvin and giants manager gave kappler will each share their recollections of that jarring an uncertain moment in baseball and the world and john and i will recall what it was like to cover that from spring training camps in arizona. All that now on this join episode of giant splash and as john. I'd like to start by asking what you remember about the events leading up to two midgely baseball announcing that it was going to be pausing spring training and delaying opening day. What was happening in giants. Camp what stands out to you. When you think back to that that erin just crazy. Looking back was normal. I mean the morning of march levin. I got school interview with a listen neck and it had been set up and we talked for about a half hour and the went to a backfield. it was kind of a drizzly rayvey day. The giants were out to surprise. But buster posey wasn't on the trip. He was working out a back there. He you know he said something. Never really from daddy so baseball secondary figuring the important stuff out. I then figure out baseball. And and of course. I mean and i spoke with jeff margin and kevin dowsman that day because those are two guys who played in that april. Two thousand fifteen game in baltimore that had no fans. There is civil unrest and nobody was invited to the park. That was the question time. Would games be played an empty. Ballparks that was. That was the question not what baseball be. Shut down and But but his alma surreal looking back the capital named johnny cueto the opening day starter after that game in surprise in wasn't that strange. I mean we you know we all we all were thinking. The season would start up baby without fans maybe at neutral sites but then of course the nba shut down after rudy. Gobert tested positive. And then the next day the giants were scheduled to be off that was march twelfth and that was the day baseball shutdown and i kept going out to scottsdale stadium and same with you and mesa to report on whatever was happening goings on but You know nothing was half that sunday march sixteenth. A rented a car and start driving home. The posey comments. It sounds like we're pretty prescient. Obviously when things started up again he opted out of the season. But in it's just it's odd to to look back on that now in knowing what you know. It's kind of see what was coming yet. You're right. I never connected that. But you're right. Jose up dowden road. Another surreal moment is is once again the manager named cueto the opening day starter Right before things ramped up again in july And so we swapped the same story all over again. Sixty games later and postseason and now a year later here we are again. Yeah it was as campaign was a little bit different. The march eleventh. They were actually rained. Out that day there was supposed to play a game against the angels on the road and i think there were actually on the way there and it was called off due to rain so they turned around and went back and they they. Everybody showed up on the morning of march twelfth. They had a game scheduled against the dodgers. They didn't know if it was going to be played or not because that was in the in the wake of the nba shutting down and there were thoughts. I think that you know major league baseball wasn't going to be far behind but But days were all ad hoc stadium on the morning of march twelfth. There was another gray morning. There were players sort of filing it out of the clubhouse we did a couple interviews on the concourse. They talked to jake. Diekman and tj mcfarland. Two left handed relievers about the new better. Minimum rule knows a story. That i didn't enough writing and And yeah there were guys kind of milling around Working out thrown await ball against the against the wall just waiting and then when the announcement came down bob. Melvin came out of the clubhouse in antarctica. Few of us on the concourse in part of his message was yeah. It seems like it's it's time to slow down there is there. Are things here that are happening. That are a little bit bigger than baseball. Obviously i don't think anybody at that point at least in that setting really had an idea of what it was gonna turn into Is definitely it was definitely a jarring moment and And yet like you said. I was going to holcomb stadium for a couple of days after that We catch players in the only one. I really talked to. Who's chris bassett starting pitcher who was loading up his truck to to drive back home to north carolina and He said basically. I don't know where we're going to get back together. But yeah it was. Obviously it was two and a half three and half months later. Everybody reconvening in july so Right now we're gonna hear from From the managers of both teams I bob melvin of the ace and then give kappler. The giants will will share their recollections of what happened in those those days in in their thoughts on how baseball has has evolved over the last year while i was on my way to a game against the angels and as i was on my way there i got a text joe maddon sam game was cancelled so i think it was weather related though and then we go back. You know the first thing that stands out to me was the rudy bear thing. So we're watching that. In the morning. And i might have been the day before. I'm not sure but that's the first thing that stood out to me about this thing could could get in here pretty quickly and then you know after that rain out. The next thing was a meeting You know amongst our team felt like there was like a day off in the day after that it was done so it happened. Quickly was dramatic to think about itseld ominous There was no time table for us to come back and is is the days went on it. Got more and more ominous like are. We actually gonna play this year. I remember. I think it was march. Twelve you came out to the concourse hope stadium and there were just a small group of reporters standing sitting around and You talked for a couple minutes in you. Basically said it's when it's time to slow down just generally and i was wondering what was your sense of of sort of the scope or the potential scope of this. Yeah no is. I was saying that though in my mind that was like you know i have to come out here and talk to you at a distance and so forth thinking to myself. This is ridiculous and then not only. Was it not ridiculous. The world changed so Those were my thoughts at that time When i was when i came out there for the first time and a half they talked you guys into distance. What was your biggest concern in the moment. Do you think when everybody was going their separate ways. We if we're going to be able to play we're going to be able to play baseball at your let alone you know. Get spring training going again So everybody went. It almost felt like the end of the season on you go home and you know it's gonna be quite a while before you know potentially get going again or if you'd gone at all and then you know it it becomes reality and then it just kind of fills you up and consumes you with you know now. This is not just about baseball. This is about life in general and.

MLB Spring training: Which Players Have A Shot At Making the Giants' Team?

"One guy that stands out to me and we'll get to Luciano. We've talked so much about him and how exciting and tantalizing he is. But we're talking bullpen, arms and guys who have a legitimate shot to make this team and one of the parting gifts from Bobby Evans. It seems like one of these guys. Camilo dove all he's been in the system time now did we saw him against the Dodgers the other night? He is exciting, and I think is you put out carry the best hair in the Giants bullpen right now. Oh, yeah, he he does have the best care because last year they had a guy Rodolfo Martinez, who was a Johnny Cueto look like just with better dreadlocks than Johnny Cueto. If you can imagine that this year, they've got Camilo Jovel who does not have better dreadlocks. But he has died his dreadlocks, so they're like orangish Red, And I'm hoping that by the regular season he'll have in his Giants Orange, because could you imagine that coming out of the bullpen? Got weapon 97 98 with a cutter and the breaking off a nasty slider. And then all of a sudden he's got the closer like hair, Camilo Devil and you make a great point. He is a parting gift from Bobby Evans. And this is something that we should talk about. I should write about eventually is all the parting gifts from Bobby Evans because you're starting to see the fruit of the Giants International. Sign me focus coming through the system. Marco Luciano, a Bobby Evans guy, Alexander Canario, Bobby Evans Guy. Curving Castro, a Bobby Evans guy. And so the Giants are starting to see this focus that we saw in the like post 2014 2015 World Series era where they went down to the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and other Latin American countries and sign some dudes and you're seeing that those dudes who they got when they were 16 17 years old are coming through this farm system and are going to be ready to contribute and so The village of all immediately popped out the other night against the Dodgers Cubs, But there's several other players, several other young players. Several other young pitchers who have really stood out so far. Well in another one is from the left side. Jake long this kid is from Sacramento. I think you would the Sac state or he's like up from the Northern California area. So he said. It was so funny. The quote I saw from him the other day was Buster Posey called him over to throw a bullpen and he called him by his name, and he was all stoked that Buster newest name because he's of that age group beauties like you and I. If Buster called us over, he'd be like, dude, that's Buster Posey calling my name so Him from the left side. You know, I hate to do the com thing, but I'm getting I'm getting Billy Wagner Vibes. Dude, What do you think? Billy Wagner vibes? That's that's fascinating. And so the reason I say that is because the jobs are actually building this guy up is a starter there. They're thinking of him a 97 from the left side, a guy with a hammer curveball and a good change up there looking at him as someone who could actually be in the rotation. And so when can't first started? Gabe Kapler traffic trump Buster Posey. They all said. Hey, pay some attention to this Sam Long guy. He's got something to him. And we're thinking, okay, This is just, you know, a guy who threw two good bullpens. You never know that happens every spring. He's probably a double A or maybe a triple a arm who could help them out of the bullpen Eventually. Then all of a sudden, he appears in the Cactus League opener against the Angels, and he has got major league stuff. No question in my mind after seeing him. Three pitches in I turn to Mark Sanchez in the press box. I go. I have seen enough. This guy can help the Giants right now, and I think that in keeping him as a starter and sending him down to triple A or double a to open up the season, you're potentially talking about someone copes who could somehow morphed his way into the Giants top pitching prospect and maybe beat Sean Jelly or Tristen back or some things other guys. The chance to excited about to the major league level. And so it's really fasting to see Sam Long come out of the bullpen because you're juxtaposing that with guys like Camilo, Javelin Caribbean Castro, who is another guy, Bobby Evan, signed who just has that hammer curve coming out of the bullpen 97. Very little mite early experience. But there are the pieces in place and you can correct me if I'm wrong. If you've seen anything differently, the first three or four days of spring training their pieces in place for the Giants to have one of the most exciting bullpens and Major league baseball and potentially one of the best is far as electricity goes like with stuff

Bobby Evans Giants Johnny Cueto Camilo Dove Rodolfo Martinez Camilo Jovel Buster Posey Camilo Devil Marco Luciano Dodgers Alexander Canario Curving Castro Billy Wagner Luciano Sam Long Buster Gabe Kapler Dominican Republic Venezuela Cactus League

"Com slash. Is teams are really kind of interesting face. You've got a lot of really know very accomplished veteran players. You got some young players and their as everyone knows. There are a lot of really good prospects. Some of whom might be guys who could contribute as as soon as this year as a manager. How do you. How do you kind of put all of that together. You know somebody again from the outside. Might look at this and say well. It's maybe not quite a rebuild but you're playing maybe for the future you know other seasons especially given the complexion of your division and certainly getting some young guy some experience etc. I'm sure important. But how do you in the front office kind of juggle all of those things. I think it's a really interesting to thinking that you make. I'm an affair. One which is like hiring new in the front office juggled an and i hope and assume that that essentially you're making i believe it. Is that the front office and the manager while we are were. Were seeing the big picture together and thinking through things together. The manager's job and the players job is is not to think about whether it's rebuild. It's not that think about whether Where we are in our progression within not reveal it our job. Try to win today. It's our job as many games as possible so whether that's with a collection of young player a nightmare of young players and and veteran is whether it's thinking out dance in advance little new guys on a forty man roster like santos and castro And the wall like you guys making an impact on point in in our season that you we need to be thinking about hoping that i really do think from my perspective faking about winning today now it goes that that's all that matters. Now we can. I can take a step back. And i can analyze this picture. But one time at the ballpark. And i've got my uniform on my job. Is it do everything that i possibly can. Night that makes sense for sure now spring time of competition You guys look set murata different areas what you feels like that the areas he most wanted to kind of be watching in terms of competition. The the wasser is developing. So i think those things are gonna may change. We may have more competitions stocks. That that we didn't expect out competition but i think Without like bringing any any names some really interesting opportunities earn spots in the bullpen and and in the rotation I think for the most part our position or are you know. Pretty well for And so again without addressing them dip of it. I would say that if there's gonna be competition everywhere and we always want run him. Where players feel like is operatives take down in fact as possible and on the mound of many english possible and that said i think like we. Your point is fair. we out Some better that are a little bit more locked down and others that have a more opening like and opportunities on jobs and who who else do you see in the mix there for for the back end. Guided stand are tired. Obviously get really nice job in in high leverage king barroga's who got down down from love origines four hours and one of the things they about this the closer's role.

"Giants baseball. God bless for staining the news here. Getting your stretch yesterday was fun. And he was great, honey. Molly. Yeah? Yes. Hearing him out their tremendous doing his thing. And then Gabe Kapler showed up yesterday. Yeah, this stuff. Guess, he says he's down in Southern California, seeing his family or his two sons, legs, I think be their high school senior just graduated once in college and Games down there doing his l a thing. Question. Is he wearing that Niner? That gold Niner hat down in l. A. Ah, and people say is that Gabe Kapler? We're in a strange hybrid of a giant night. I'm gonna say no, because he's such a sensitive man of the people I'm going to say like he's very aware of his surroundings. You feel like you know what? I'm not gonna. I don't want to annoy my friends and Soquel with wearing the the Niner had. I think he's just sensitive to people's needs, and he's going to say no Niner hat when I'm in. So Cal. Well, here he is. He's back talking. And I guess you know, as we kind of get ready for. It's funny. People are saying that Mike telling us yesterday that when you get to Christmas time as a baseball player, you start getting the itch. Yeah, it's almost time. Yeah. Are we gonna get the itch or do we not get to get the itch? I don't know. I don't know what's gonna happen in this costume. That's OK. Great question can wait. It doesn't mean I don't know. Let's put it this way. I don't expect that we're going. I mean, we get the unless we get the NBA on TNT. Bob. Yeah, upset me. That video's hilarious. Yeah, vaccine getting rolled in on a cart. That, uh, that that you guys you guys have heard about the last couple of days. The Major League Players Association and said they were They were anticipating a 1 62 game season. "That The number one headlines across the country, and maybe even here locally are going to center around the national anthem and what happened with the Giants players and coaches and manager During the national anthem. Gabe Kapler took any several Giants players Jalen Davis and Mike Extreme Ski in Austin. Slater were among them. And John Richardson, one of the Giants coaches was on any other Giants players, seemingly even if they weren't kneeling down in solidarity. I think that is going, Tio Generate a lot of discussion around the country and we saw a quick Word from the giantsclubhouse sort of like in a Cactus League game. Players who leave the game are made available for comments. I think it was Kevin Gausman, who commented on it and said, Hey, we're all here to support each other, and the message before the game was with the first anthem coming up. Since this restart that whatever anybody does, you're going to be supported around here. It's your choice and will support you. And so anyway, I have a feeling that's gonna generate a lot of discussion with the Giants did tonight. Well, I think so. And

"Meetings as well as our major league coaches were building communication with our minor league coaches for the zoom calls. That we haven't another time in history where we've been able to see these things play out because we just haven't had the time in the day the what's happened. John is the relationships are being built between our miley getting coaches in our major league getting coaches and Antoine. Richardson are outfield. Base running coach is facilitating these zoom calls. So that our outfielders in the minor league and at the major league level. So if you can if you can picture under bishop and you Stransky on these calls with all of our minor league coaches and Major League outfielder outfield base running coaches all having conversations about first step quickness and about winning the first three steps. You can see that we're collaborating as an organization right now using these technologies that that you reference so that's the main part of my day and and a part of my day that I'm most proud of is participating in and and helping facilitating facilitate some of these calls utilizing technology. Well what a great opportunity and experience for these younger guys to actually be on the call with the bigly coaches and the big league players very very cool opportunity it and like I said kind of unprecedented. I think as a farm director when I played that role and then as a major league staff number you always dream about connecting minor league and Major League coaches and players alike because minor league players get so much out of hearing major league players talk and seeing them face to face. But you never have the bandwidth to make it happen and we really see this as competitive window for us to be better than than other organizations out this and you know. I. I don't mean mean mean to say that other organizations are doing. The same thing I would say is is that we're.

"A couple of people around the organization who play. We talked about doing some jam sessions together. One of them is a are are traveling secretary or our travel lead in. I might get together and play music together. I remember back to being in Tampa Bay as a player Longoria myself. Fernando Perez other players who played instruments or get into jam session regular basis We'd have a play set up where we could go play. Rocco Ball Deli was involved in that as well So I think it's a really good way to stay connected. Play music together songs. Wanted to make sure that I have my base boy. That's beautiful sounds like a great zoom opportunity these days but I think you're using probably for other reasons. That's about my family. I can relate you have an eighteen year old. I have a seventeen year old. Who's using zoom every day in school? Which is a great thing for these kids? It's a classroom setting and it's a lecture. It's a class participation. It's as if you're there and it's a really cool thing. I myself spend Easter on zoom. Usually I get together with the family but wasn't to happen this time. Anyway what could I could ask. What a typical day is for you. You know from communicating with your staff and players and front office to even do in the personal things like like eating or cooking or working out under You know obviously you have to prepare for a season that may or may not come but the communication factor I imagine is paramount. "You need a closer or are you. Open to rotating that position or even used in your best best reliever in a higher leverage seventh or eighth inning situation where we'd see a stereotypical closer into twenty twenty twenty things a little too early to tell John I mean I think we want to see see what our our roster looks like heading into spring training. I think we've got a lot of possibilities right now. For the sixth through the ninth and we'll look to be creative to to find the best fits for each situation now do von seems to be a a real wildcard linear. He was really impressive. toward the end of last season at Ed both short and second but he so athletic he could do a lot of things that I was the outfield particular Centerfield do see him roaming around the diamond or is he the in the mix at second base with the Solano and the newcomer Gilmer Sanchez. We see it as we see opportunities for playing time as as merit based so We see Yohmor and we see DEVAN. We see Solano. No no as competing for playing time. We see some openings in the outfield and so for that reason we're excited about let's see what do bond can do in the outfield as well and these are conversations that we'll continue to have with with all players. Are you looking For the second baseman to be more defensive minded or more hitting minded because Sanchez comes as a raining. Gold Glover From the white sox where he was wonderful on defense but maybe provide the pop that you might be looking for with this lineup. We're excited about Sanchez's Sanchez's Defense contributions and he's also put in quite a bit of time with with Justin belief. One of our major league coaches Spent a good deal of time with him. This past offseason working through swing adjustments Those swing adjustments Yohmor has been pretty committed to and we're excited to see what those changes producing spring training and in the regular season. Speaking of the new coaches have they at all met with or at least spoken with all the veterans. Including you know buster Posey in Crawford and belt and Longoria. Here's been a lot of work done so far John so Longoria and Crawford both have spent time with our hitting roof in the cage in Scottsdale Buster and some Marjo have both been here in San Francisco had an opportunity to talk to both of those guys. They're both working really hard into to put their bodies and their minds in the right position to have success in in twenty twenty But all of our coaches are making consistent contact with with our players That's that's true for me as well. Some really good conversations with with our players already. Pablo Sandoval is a giant again. Yes or at least he will be resuming. His Rehab with the giants opening day. Seems Unlikely I don't know maybe I'm wrong. But he's A. He's a bit ahead of schedule. But I think opening day is is certainly certainly ambitious given the circumstances right you met with him in Miami off season did that Lead to the signing here or was that the introductory Conversation you had and would you expect from him. It wasn't for sure that he was gonna be back but he does as Bruce Bochy said many times provide a lot of personality in leadership and Enjoy those sure so Collaboration always leads to the signing of players As far as Pablo's lows impact on on the clubhouse I don't think it can be discounted. It's a it's a big thing. He's he keeps the mood life. He knows how to to inspire his teammates and have been example of that. When I went out to Miami and I sat down with Suarez Anderson and Pablo Pablo double had a a really mature perspective on how to handle that conversation he knew when the right time was for to take control of the conversation but he also also knew when to tee up Anderson and Suarez so that I was able to get to know the three of them together at the same time? He's just he's a mature but also very lighthearted joy filled athlete. And then I'll say this as when we came in with the phillies Pablo. Oh was dangerous coming off the bench swing and a good bat and he. We always had to account for the possibility that he was gonNA come up in a big situation and and we knew that he was going to be a grind of a plate appearance. And so yeah I mean He. He had a good year last year with the BAT. And I'm excited for for him. When he's fully healthy he would that be made with Epi June July? Would that be August. Do we know. I don't think we have an exact timeline yet I've I've seen videos of Pablo. He's he shares awesome and he's excited about his progress so he's throwing fairly aggressively at this point And obviously he shared some videos. Swing swing looks good. Looks in good shape. You mentioned Anderson is one of the three met in Miami. Which Anderson was the Sean John Anderson? Okay in Tyler will be ready for the season. I don't know exactly where he is in his time. Line right now but I can get that information for you okay. Anybody else Smiley anybody else. Who is questionable? annable for opening day smiley healthy okay. Yeah we're we're good to go there. Okay Okay and Darren rough another newcomer. Who spent the last last three years in Korea? Yeah hit some home runs. Eighty plus I don't know if that's the level of AAA or what but eighty five home runs. Eighty five home runs. Let's first baseman slash corner. After would you see of him. You nailed it on heat. So in in Korea the numbers he put up. Were really impressive. I I think three years in a row were was nine hundred opie s and I think at least one of those years was over thousands so he was able to to do two things. He's very well that we value number one hit for power number to get on base so and Darren we had some exposure to Darren when I was in player player development with the dodgers many years ago And Look I mean I'm not sure how much of the performance from Korea the last couple of years translates it's two major league baseball but they're certainly reason for optimism. Where's this going to get? Its power This is a tougher ballpark park to hit them. Most if not all and the numbers on the offensive side last few years haven't been impressive on the power side with. Where are you going to get your our our job as a major league? Coaching staff is to take the pieces that we have in this room. The athletes that we that we have in this room in on our roster right now and try try to turn the dial up just a little bit We are a player. Development Focused Major League coaching staff. So one way for us to to get a two to power in our lineup is to improve swings improve swing decisions And continue can you to to make adjustments to get the most out of our our very talented athletes. I think there's another level in another gear in some some of our veteran players. And I think that we're GONNA do everything necessary to develop the the young players that are still coming into their own and I think in Strips Ubon Jalen Davis dickerson. Like these are slater. All of these guys have have some pretty high ceilings. Yes you have a relationship with Kevin Pillar. Yeah we We both come from the same part of California. Yeah Yeah we've stayed in touch over the years. Now he's a free agent yes Farhan told me that before spring training. He's expecting one or two more outfielders in the mix to bring in church and I'm wondering if You might shed any light on whether he would be somebody you'd like to pursue or have I know this. Isn't you know party. Part of your Gig you manage. The team brings the players in but with no and your relationship with other players who have come in. Let me drop that name. Yes so I I'd say I respect the work and the job that far on and Scott hairs are are. GM have to do which which is to decide on on what the roster is going to look like and it's my job to be a thought partner with them on those decisions but then also to I fully support and and get the most out of the players that come into the clubhouse in our on our major league roster rather than speaking to individuals I can speak to characteristics heuristic value I value and respect hard play gritty play Fiery play guys that are tough and that are gonNA scratch and claw in grind for every possible advantage so rather than speak to anyone individuals individual. I can tell you that the character characteristics value. Are Those understood. Some of the characteristics centered on. Roy Does maybe the last thing would be. What could you tell giant Ryan fans about the twenty twenty giants that would make them encouraged after three straight losing seasons here? Yeah I think the thing that comes to mind immediately is when teams get on their charters to fly back to their home cities after playing three game series in San Francisco Cisco we expect for them to be exhausted because of our grind our hustle our determination and our fight. So I think that's brand of baseball. That giants fans can get on board with and one that our clubhouse our players our staff will be proud to play and I think that's an that's an entertaining brand of major league baseball. Well good enough. Thank you very much thank you. Thank you for listening to this. Episode of the giant Splash. We'll have more your podcast leading up to spring. "Covers talked about the fact that he and his ex wife had a domestic violence charitable foundation. Because she herself had been the victim of domestic violence wanted a previous relationship He has suggested in places where the things he'd learned from that organization. He sort of tried to apply. I think in this instance things like mediation and things like that when it was you know equitable situations. Obviously so I think he said well some of this was was trying to come from a good place and try to handle things in a good way and it was the wrong thing to do but it wasn't done maliciously or with criminal intent to where it was it was trying you to help things. It didn't right backfired and I think a sampled the former as outfielder Who somebody that I covered and respect a lot is very close friends with Kappler and he said the fact that this incident happened at all? Not The fact that it's been publicized that it's been a problem for him but the fact that this incident happened and and was And Kappler feels like he did mishandle at has really kind of crushed him and been very difficult for him because he has had that background with domestic violence advocates at advocating for victims of domestic violence rape. But but again I find it odd that if you have that in your background and you've have those connections In your faced in a decision making capability with how do you handle it. What's the right thing to do? You don't turn to those resources instead you go out over your skis as he said it and try to do it on your own instead of knowing that there is a huge network I mean I've had this this issue with other sports franchises including the forty niners about not tapping into these resources. That are are available and WanNa help in wanted WANNA guide organizations through this this messy ugly situation So it just seems odd that he had that background and yet didn't tap back into it sometimes. A little knowledge is actually a dangerous thing. I think I've familiar with domestic situations. I know you know. This woman. Allegedly had had been assaulted by two women and physically And I think he was thinking. Well this is Domestic violence situation oldest step in and handle this and obviously it was not turned out later. She you know there were accusations of sexual assault and Yeah it was I. It was not his place to to do that when I talked to a realized I talked to him and asked asked him. Do you have a daughter because I mean I have a daughter and I can't imagine suggesting that a teenage girl sit down with two men who were There when she was is being assaulted and videotape and videos. I mean diligent. Yeah so I mean I mean the whole thing is is messy and ugly and And sample may be right. It may have tortured him. But it only came to stick came to light in February right And we know how it came delight. Obviously there was a disgruntled former employee. Who who made sure people knew about this but be that as it may the fact that these Kappler admits that these two incidents happened in in his unhappy about the way he handled them in? So I don't know you know. He was a candidate for the dodgers job. I don't know this handling handling with disgust. Obviously that's the same as Asian. I don't know if it ever came up when he was a candidate for the phillies job. And and then it came out in February. And now you you know so. It's it's relatively fresh. which is one of the reasons? It's being rehashed Even though these things happen for years ago they've only been known about since you know in the last last seven months. Well it was a very strange strange strange press opening press conference he no. There's very few as you mentioned. There's only thirty of these jobs The giants have had had so few of them. The these openings come up and then you spend the majority of the press conference talking about this. This topic is very very strange. I talked talked to numerous former teammates. Kappler's people who know him pretty well Today and Two guys declined to talk not not out of from from my. You know just didn't have time but everyone else that I spoke to was incredibly enthusiastic. The level of passion a little commitment. The you know how knowledgeable and Quick he has to learn. What do you think just in terms of him? Put this incident the side and the way he handled it and potentially decision making with with that with do you think of him sheerly as a potential manager. Well I mean that we don't know from one we don't know because we don't know what decisions he'll be making right. I mean that's the big thing I mean he's going to be. You did ask that. He's he's not really beat around the Bush you basically ask. Are you going to be a puppet. I think I might have but so obviously obviously far on his controlling the roster The new guy the new general general manager might be making out the lineup. I mean what. So he's GonNa be taught you know dealing with the clubhouse dealing with the chemistry and it was interesting hearing him. Talk about Changing the culture and getting being the culture right and looking behind me at buster Posey who kind of had this bemused look on his face and I just wanted to know what was going through. His head is like you know like I've been here. Well well we had a pretty good culture. It's kind of all about having really good players right so I mean I know that with the phillies did a lot of unconventional things. People blame him for sure Some things that went wrong including Cousins injury which is too bad I know that You know they. They are considered to have underachieved And they tailed off badly at the end of both seasons which to me is always a bad sign about how eighteen is connecting and and how cohesive it is I I don't think the giants are going to be very good next year and so it's one thing to not be very good under Bruce Bochy. It's another thing to not be very good under Gabe Kaplan and I don't know how you know ardy swaths of empty seats for the last two years. I just don't know I don't on how it's GonNa how it's going to go over. Yeah and I wonder how long the leashes you know that they if they aren't going to be very good which they probably shouldn't be like. What are the expectations for him? Realistically now he did say he was going to rely on. Buster Posey A lot. He's talked to Bruce Bochy. I think he feels like he can go. Bruce Bocce with the questions and has had an has house them for him. He's got run motus he's got Ron Modus back. Which makes you know makes fans feel good of a million face? I think we were all in favor of that So but it is going to be interesting He is a polarizing figure. There's no doubt about that. And he always has been he's always been sort of people either love him or they can't stand. I'm Kinda Guy I ask Sam fold about that and Sam said that's his because he's got such a big strong personality opinionated he's not afraid to state his opinions ends but he also listens like he will. You can talk him out of a position if you give him the facts and and you convince him You know he's not. He's not a dummy that's for sure but now does have a big strong right. Now any any comes with words I mean from his detractors call him narcissistic and arrogant Polarizing so so. It's just interesting because those are not words that have been associated with the person who has held this position right in the past down. This is not the I mean yes. It's one thirty jobs but just because it's the giants and they haven't had any that many over the last thirty five years it's not like is not becoming the pope or something thank you smoke. I saw smoking no baseball. It is but it is one with a pretty strong lineage H. and and the and the truth is Now no offense to buster but I mean because far haunt you know is a pretty low key keith guy. Because Larry Baird's now in a much reduced position on Cape Kepler's can be the face of the team and a high. I don't know how that goes over either. You know I mean I mean there is no I mean Bruce Bocce Gut Gut Kinda lucky because even though people aren't super excited when he first got here. Timmy had already you kind of become the face of the team So you know there was there. I don't know it's just. It's a whole different era. Yeah well it's GonNa be interesting to to gauge on my behalf for from far from the other side. This hour Bob. Melvin is now the height of stability yet longest serving manager right right now so that keeps going all right and Killian. "Welcome to the San Francisco. Chronicle's giants splash. PODCAST I'm your host for once not Henry Shulman it's me Susan's lesser Filling in while Henry is a much deserved vacation in well. John Shea is at the baseball General Manager meetings in Scottsdale and killing and I covered the Gabe Kappler press conference the introduction of the new giants manager a which was certainly an unusual press conference and you and I have attended many oppressor introducing a manager or a new player in new executive and this one Before you're GonNa Questions were even asked journal Manage Team President Farm on safety Address the allegations of dodgers players assault against an underage girl and also another woman That occurred while he and gave copper. We're both with the dodgers. Kappler was in charge of the the dodgers minor league system. At the time you have written about this topic COUPLE OF TIMES A. You're obviously writing about it again. And you asked asked numerous questions during the press conference about it What's your takeaway from the way the giants handle this today? And how surprised were you first with the press conference and and really just with the with the hiring altogether given this what we know about these incidents. Well I I gotta say. I'm a little surprised at the higher We've been hearing Gabe Kaplan. It was named for weeks now as soon as he got fired from the phillies even maybe even before he got fired when his his fate was kinda hanging in the balance because everyone knew he had a relationship ship with far Han but because these allegations which surfaced last February even they took place in two thousand fifteen but they really came to light late last February in a couple of different national publications and We you know I think given the difficulties. The giants silence have had with not only their on field performance but some of the off field issues surrounding Larry Baer surrounding the majority owner. Charles Johnson Just the fact that they're lose. They've lost a chunk of their fan base. People have gotten very disillusioned with the team and it just seemed like an odd time to hire a guy who comes with a lot of baggage and a lot of Highly sensitive baggage of issues that That are or not very palatable to people regarding sexual assault and how it was handled which speaks to his decision making to be quite frank. It's not just that these things took place but it was was did he make the right decisions And and then you add on top of it the fact that he was a major league manager and not a very good one and in had to really underachieving seasons in Philadelphia and There were other candidates and so I am surprised that they hired him and then again. I am surprised I'm not surprised by the tenor of the press conference. Because you knew it was going to be like this. You knew when far Hawn had a conference call last night you knew. When he went on the radio this morning you knew when he opened the press conference with remarks addressing what happened in the dodgers Farm system for years ago Still it was a hour long Interrogation really not a coronation Russian. And you know you've you grew up here in. You know the team you cover has had. It's not recently but has changed managers Alive in recent years. The giants have had such stability at that position. They've had four managers in thirty five years saying Roger Craig Dusty. St Baker Philippe illu the shortest tenure. With I think six years and then Bruce Bocce and and to have All this controversy following on the heels of all that goodwill that Bucci left behind is just. It's very odd it is. It was a strange press conference. I mean I guess you could argue that if Farhan is willing to make a higher under these circumstances knowing. There's going to be some uproar that they're going to be a lot of questions asked he's either very very convinced. This is the right guy for the job Even more so than he might have been for anyone else because he knew this was coming and it can't be an easy position to be in And and you would hope extremely convinced that the things he's saying. I E that he thought that Kappler Handled that as well has he could have at the time now. They've both said. They wished they had handled things differently. In retrospect they wish they had consulted with outside experts. They I wish they had been more supportive of the victims Kappler you have criticized him for trying to set up sort of a meeting between the alleged inch perpetrator and the underage victim. Who at the time? Kappler did not know that there was any allegation of sexual assault that was later she had allegedly at that time been assaulted by another woman and it was filmed by dodgers player. That was So to make that clear at the time that was his working knowledge but he did try to mediate a session between them which he spent and he really kind of said today that that was Non Yeah not. That was not really what he should have. I've been doing so I think he's learned a lot from it and clearly not just far Han but the rest of the giants brass are convinced that lessons were learned. And that's enough and I guess they feel like the incident Get something that. They're willing to overlook the wrong word. But certainly it's not enough to have kept them from hiring well and the the thing that you know more and more has come to light during this process. Is They have to overlook it or else. They have to hold far haunt accountable accountable too because Farhan was also a decision maker in that process with the dodgers. He was one of the guys that that Kappler reported up the chain to Oh and was also involved in not going to the police in punting it to the legal team in the legal team was basically You know duck and cover hover was their strategy and and you know they didn't inform authorities and and so You know I think that it's weird. It makes a a weird bond Between Kappler and far Han that they had each other's back back then when they had to make this they they were making. What many would consider the wrong decisions? And now they're going to be decision makers here with the giants and sure so. I'm sure there's trust between the two some of them and learning processes between the two of them. But I don't know how well that's GonNa be viewed from the outside like. Can you trust their decision making together. I also also You know and you and I have. We're we're both women. Obviously we've both been working in this business for about the same amount of time which is a hell of a long time and you know I just. It's just kind of familiar scenario. You know you. When when incidents of domestic violence or sexual assault happen they dr trivialized or overlooked or kind of swept away when they happen then if they kinda resurface or someone's held accountable then there's a whole bunch chipper hand wringing and apologizing? You know talk about lessons learned and all of that and then everyone goes on with their business anyway. Like people aren't really held accountable. Well let's say in this case in one of the things that is a little bit different than some of these others was an far. Home was very clear about this and emphasized at numerous times. There was no effort certainly by Kappler to cover anything up. You know what I went up the chain. He has not denied anything Certainly anywhere along the line So the fact that there wasn't any purported cover up or anything like that Maybe it was just massive massive naievety. Yeah perhaps and it feels that way it feels like naievety and which is weird because it was four years ago. We're we're not talking about like nineteen sixty five or even nineteen ninety-two. We're talking about a world in which Ray Rice had just you know been caught on video a year earlier punching punching his his fiancee. I mean we we. It's not like this happened in in the dark ages and so sometimes when I I appreciate people have saying lessons learned and we're going to be better and do better but it's like really. That was not very long ago and they were grown men making decisions about this at the time and it just felt like they were protecting you know the players. which are you know? They're commodity I'll be back with more with my conversation with an Killian after this contour from Cox has all your favorites all in one place and with the contour remote you can use your voice to fund them on live TV on demand. "Where the giants gore right now Hey guy Bruce Bochy who but not a demand is back in the mix one of the last fully autonomous managers you know Joe Maddon is is an analyst guy was on for front of it where the giants going now maybe not to the day Kapler extreme well maybe to the Gabe Kapler street as of there's been talk that he is own list of giants guys to be talked to if he has been talked to already wasn't just did they say bad was three for twelve so it was it is a three for between rival between twelve and fifteen yeah here is good in the make I was surprised only in three years then they only yet in the only given five they give a five or a little over five in Chicago was it like five press was five it was definitely five year gap I think it was five for twenty eight I'm not positive but if you take a little bit of a pay cut that kind of shows you where things are at right now percent and the angels the cost was it it it it matters before he managed in in Detroit short I. N. I don't even know you learn there because it was a very much it was really a winnable situation there that he had one good year but I have to go back and look but getting your rate of just because of of is it has its shortcomings this year was because they wanted a bad back they were they wanted a guy who had been there done that he did it with the with the rays one did win the big one and then when the big one with the with the cubs and they probably hired they probably they had no idea they can get rid of us was because they didn't think the cubs get rid of bad luck the cubs made out of got rid of mad it except for the cubs just they ran into a brick wall the last three weeks of the season they were brutal they they couldn't win is they can get away and go when night nope not gonna win at either in the Milwaukee could lose I mean who would have thought that would the odds of that have been Milwaukee making their playoff cubs don't after your guides or gets hurt down that going to happen but it did not so easy falls out of favor there and let go and he gets to go to the Anaheim where you want to go he wanted to go there they wanted him there that's the reason they got rid of them but if you're not gonna see that that's one of the reasons they said you won't see boshi this year because no one's going to want to paying that much
