"I'm a little kind of thrown off by you. Instigating issues between desantis and president Trump. I'm a precinct captain. I'm not going to say I'm instigating something. Okay, I'm a precinct captain. And the Republican precinct, captain, okay? So I work my community and I listen to what people are saying. And we all voted for president Trump. And we all love him. We still love him. But there are people that are guiding him that he is listening to and some of those people tried to tell him not to do some of the things that he's been entrapped into. Such as bringing the bringing the supporters to the city on January 6th, they allowed him to stick his neck in that noose and the Democrats sprung the trap. And this thing with this thing with Kanye West and the racism and his buddy that he brought along, who allowed president Trump to think or to do this without even investigating who this individual was. So unfortunately, the president Cred is legacy has been greatly damaged by he himself. I'll tell you what, you know what? You know what's interesting. It's interesting. You're harder on them than I am. And you called out by the hang on, how old is that? Hold on a second. You started the call saying that I'm instigating something here, and then you go and bash him. I'm not bashing him for this stuff. Like you are. I think that you should let, I believe that you should let the voters make up their mind without all this energy behind you.

Is the Trump Stock Falling?

"All right, ladies and gentlemen, let me talk about a finish what I was saying about Brittany griner. You know, you know, one thing that's funny, Sean told me in the break and my wife told me about this yesterday, Brittany griner had a domestic violence charge, at least she was arrested for domestic violence. Back in 2015. Now, Brittany griner was a man and she had a domestic violence charge against a woman, they would they be telling leave her over there. Want you woman beat her. But she a woman beating up another woman or whatever she did to the woman, it's all good 'cause she LGBTQ. Anyway, Trump, let me read what Trump said. Because I think that's why Trump is losing his stock value. I forget the numbers that I use, but I told you, when in 2016, Trump was at like $800 a share. And then when he by the time he got to 2020 Trump was really, in my opinion, before the COVID, Trump was at like $1500 a share. Then after COVID, during the 2020 election, Trump was down to probably like $1100 a share. Which I think he was popular enough to win the presidency, but you know how 2020 went. And then I'll investigations probably got him down to about a $1000 a share. And then when he went out against Ron DeSantis, he went down, he went down to about $500 a share. After coming out against Ron DeSantis in such an epic time of Ron DeSantis his success in his career, a Republican success and then I believe that when he did his speech, he think he went back up from $500 a share to about $800. You need to be around 12, 1300 right now to win. So he went up to about $500 a share. And then he met with Kanye West. And a white supremacist. It went all the way down to 500 back down to $500 a share. And then what he don't realize is that him coming out against Brittany griner, he just probably went down to four 50 a share. I don't know why people are not advising Donald Trump. Stay away from these issues. We'll talk about it. You need to be the president. You need to be presidential. You need people on both sides to vote for you. I don't.

"Since you brought it up, I sent my friend is, you know, in charge of RuPaul's Drag Race show. And I just sent a thing about how drag queens have to travel with extra security now. And we were just saying like, what the F has happened, right? Like we all grew up with, you know, Carol Burnett show on and on. You don't Flip Wilson people. Why how did this happen that suddenly drag queens are being accused of being pedophiles and there's violence, I guess aimed at them, right? It's a distraction. It's a way to also justify this neo Nazi mindset. It's a way to justify homophobia in this frame of we're protecting the children. No, we're not. We're giving in to neo Nazis. A new alt threat, which is this strangely Christian evangelical, it's a crusade. And they want to kill people. And it's evident in this idea of tossing the constitution. Everything but the Second Amendment. Everything but the right to bear arms. Yeah. It's a very, it's horrible. And what Kanye West is doing is actually eroding it further. It's giving them more boldness to do things like shooting up a power plant. Yeah. I mean, whether that's a theory, I tend to believe it. Well, you know, and I was saying people in the cold. Antisemitic celebrities stoke fears of normalizing hate

"Violent attacks against Jews are on the rise in America, and some leaders are warning a new surge of anti semitism being expressed by celebrities could make that type of hate normal in America. The comments from rapper Kanye West, including his love for Adolf Hitler. An anti semitic film being promoted by the nets Kyrie Irving, and Donald Trump hosting a Holocaust denying white supremacist at Mar-a-Lago, are raising fears for some that the U.S. is returning to a darker place. We are prominent leaders spread conspiracy theories about Jewish people without impunity. The mayor of Miami Beach, Florida, Dan, says these are not idiots that no one's heard of. He says when influential mainstream cultural political and even sports icons normalize hate speech, everyone needs to be very concerned. The anti defamation league reports nearly 3000 cases of assault, harassment and vandalism against Jewish people last year. A 34% increase over the previous year, and the highest number in four decades. I'm Jackie Quinn

Darren Beattie: Does Elon Musk Believe in Permanent Bans?

"Make of the Kanye West permanent ban? What's that before we get into this Eric holder situation? Well, we'll have to see whether it's actually permanent. I mean, there is a special advantage to having a direct line to Elon and it's clear that Kanye or VA or whatever he's called. He has that direct line. And so I think deep down Elon, just like Jack Dorsey, nobody believes in sort of permanent punishment without any opportunity for redemption. So we'll just have to see how it plays out as to the policy itself. I mean, it certainly contradicts Elon's previously stated preference that basically we go by what legal speech is. So assuming that Kanye said nothing illegal, which I don't think he did. He shouldn't be banned for it. But so practical matter, we live in a practical world, Elon is far more practical, I think, than a lot of people imagine. And it could very well just be the practical messy reality that Elon's done a tremendous amount for Twitter already. And he needs to offer a couple sacrifices to the sensors in order to keep up what he's been doing at least at these initial stages. And I think we can all probably agree that Ye was certainly certainly testing limits and making things difficult for Elon. So maybe it's just as a matter of practical reality, that's what that's what Elon had to do, even though it violates his stated preference of just saying, okay, if it's legal speech, it should be allowed on Twitter at least for American users.

His Twitter account was suspended after posting a picture of a swastika merged with a star of David. The platform's new owner, Elon Musk, tweeted that the rapper had again violated our rule against incitement to violence, Ye posted an unflattering picture of Musk in what he called his final tweet. Meanwhile, parler announced that the rapper is no longer buying the conservative social media site back in October, they'd said the acquisition would be completed near the end of this year. Parler was launched in August of 2018, surged in popularity when followers of Donald Trump migrated to the site, it had to be relaunched after it was kicked off of Google Apple and Amazon Web servers in January of 2021 over its ties to the insurrection at the U.S. capitol. Rapper Ye Draws Fresh Denunciation for Hitler Praise

"Oh my God. We gotta talk about Kanye West on the Alex Jones show. Man, all transparency I did not watch the particular podcast, the show. I saw clips. I saw excerpts from it. And my staff was watching it, they were looking at it and they had told me some of the things that Kanye had said, and I really feel bad for Kanye to a certain degree. Because I get what he's trying to do, I think I get where his heart is at. But the articulation of what he's thinking and what he's actually doing, they're not, they're not meeting in the middle, baby. They all, they everywhere. He said that he loved Hitler. Now let me say this. I want to put this in perspective. I think that if you say that in the context of the Bible, that would be a correct thing to say, right? You're supposed to love everybody. You post to love everybody. Even your enemies. That's what the Bible say. But in the context of expressing that to human beings. I don't think many people are gonna understand you when you say you love Hitler and then he goes on and he said that Hitler had done a lot of great things. Now, let's be honest here. You know, Hitler probably had some accomplishments that he had made, obviously he was an incredible orator that he used for bad, not for good, and he probably had some accomplishments. However, the bad counseled out everything he could have possibly done that was acceptably good. And that's just my opinion about it. Some people may disagree with me. But I don't care what freeways you build. I don't care. I would argue that people probably study him on the way he was able to communicate and influence that many people to do such evil things with our many without question. He would probably study the fact that he was able to lead like that. However, when you go and exterminate people and put them in internment camps and burn them alive and gassed them and do our kind of stuff to them because you want to purify a race of people and completely obliterate people that you don't agree with or you don't like or you don't believe is worth living, everything that you've done in your life begins to be counseled.

Here's what Willie guy said this morning on MSNBC and morning Joe about Trump's dinner at Mar-a-Lago with Kanye and the supremacist guy. By the way, we should point out as the story has developed over a couple of days. Donald Trump got totally hustled by this guy. He showed up at the dinner with Kanye West. He wanted the attention of having his name out there. He got that. And now he's condemning Donald Trump and said he's abandoned the base. He's not our guy anymore. So Donald Trump got totally hustled by a 24 year old white supremacist and Holocaust denier. Now, again, I don't know if that's true or not. Maybe it is, maybe it's not. I don't trust anything that comes from morning Joe, do you? But let's just suppose that it's true. This colleague of mine calls me this morning. She says, Mike, admit it to me. Tell me the truth. Don't you really kind of wish Trump would fade off into the sunset? Don't you wish he'd kind of go away? Don't you like Ron DeSantis or somebody else? "The Kanye West fallout will cost Adidas at least $250 million this year by Nick poppy. A tough year for Adidas Scott even more complicated on Tuesday when it cut ties with Kanye West. One of the brand's most profitable partners after he made a series of anti semitic remarks on social media and embraced a slogan associated with white supremacists. The decision will cost the company at least $250 million this year, though experts and managing corporate crises tell time it was the right thing to do. But for the affected Jewish community, the cost of the delay is incalculable experts say. Doing the right thing as a company is more important than just the bottom line, says Steven Fink, a crisis consultant, and author of crisis communications, the definitive guide to managing the message. And the fact that it took them so long to recognize that, I think, speaks volumes about where their head is at. Adidas joins a number of other companies and dropping Ye. Including gap, balenciaga, Vogue, JPMorgan Chase, talent agency, CAA, and MRC entertainment, which shelved a finished documentary on him. For Adidas, the German company that's known for its marketing tactics and iconic three stripes logo, reputation is just as important as the brand itself. The company had been under intense scrutiny over the last month from Jewish community groups that condemned its 9 year relationship with west, who now goes by Ye, and called on the company to end its partnership with yeezy, his sneaker and clothing company. Pressure on Adidas mounted this weekend after members of a hate group draped signs over a major highway in Los Angeles that said, honk if you know Kanye is right about Jews. Photos of the men doing the Nazi salute went viral on social media, prompting a number of celebrities to call out Adidas for not immediately cutting ties with Ye after his previous comments. The company's own director of trade marketing, even weighed in on the controversy, writing in a lengthy LinkedIn post that Adidas has dropped athletes for using steroids and being difficult to work with. "And the last few weeks he has displayed both those attributes I want to say. But yeah, another day, another crazy Kanye West story. Whether you want to believe it's a conspiracy is up to you, but it turns out some of what he said on the Tucker Carlson show the other night, the people at Fox decided not to air because, well, he just sounded nuttier than it should house rat. In addition to tossing the word Jew around like crazy, which you don't want to do in Hollywood, at one point, Kanye mentioned something really bizarre. He claimed that fake children were planted in his home to a manipulate his kids. North his daughter who's 9, saint his son, who is 6 chicagos, another daughter who's four and psalm is his three year old son. Tucker wasn't quite sure what he meant and Kanye explained. He said, I mean like actors, professional actors placed into my home to sexualize my kids. Once again, I don't know what Kanye means. I did on yesterday's Patreon describe how their four year old daughter Chicago in a clip on Instagram was wearing full on makeup. Including lip liner, lipstick, lip gloss, probably a little foundation. I bet a touch of mascara too. She was going out with her mommy. I believe they were gonna see the LA rams play. And sit up in a private suite, but I was immediately disgusted to see that. I understand little girls want to play makeup with mommy. But playing with makeup and applying it are two different things. This was applied makeup. And I can't stand when people sexualize children, especially nowadays with all the crazy creeps and pedophiles roaming around. So I'm on Kanye's side completely when it comes to this and judging the way the females and that family have changed their faces and body types with tons of procedures and surgeries and Botox and fillers and God knows what else they have their hands on before the rest of the world knows about it. "I got to say, I'm watching the Tucker Carlson interview with Kanye West and listen, you know something? This is some great shit. It really is. I like a lot of what he has to say. I love the fact that he's, you know, he pegged why the Kardashians use mainly black men. I like that he drew attention to Kris Jenner's boyfriend in particular or fake boyfriend. Corey gamble. Have we ever seen any kind of public display of affection? Anything beyond hand holding on pinky holding? This is all bullshit. You know, when Kanye asked, who is he? Where did he come from? I totally agree. Kris Jenner has the best of everything. She makes sure her children and grandchildren have the best of everything. And then watch she holds Cory gamble's hand, was supposed to believe that. No. Never bought it for a second. And you know, Kanye knows having been in that family for a long time. Now, Corey gamble is phony. He's an accessory for Chris. This way she can look like she's as cool as the four daughters who only date black men. It's very orchestrated. And yet she tells talk show host Corey is husband material. No, he's not. Kanye West says he was told his life and career would be in jeopardy for supporting Donald Trump, memory put the Red Hat on and now he says it's happening all over again with his white lives matter shirt. I wear that shred in a second. I wish I could find one. He sat down with Tucker Carlson and look, he said, I'm getting death threats of a wearing the red maga hat. In 2018, his so called friends slash handlers told him his career would be over if he supported Trump. Well, that didn't happen the opposite happened. He's printing money now. They said you're gonna be killed for that hat. No, he's still alive and kicking. Kanye says the white lives matter shirt, but he debuted this week at his easy fashion show, has triggered a lot of bad threats. And I like, I like when he asked his feet he talked about asking his father. What's so bad about wearing this shirt? Why have people say angry? And his dad said something to the effect, there's nothing wrong with that statement. It's a true statement.

"One of the tricky things about wrapping our heads around Kanye West is that that story is constantly being recontextualized. Yeah, absolutely. And something that we do see a genius is this stream of consciousness by which he always seems to operate and which is always seemed to sort of inform his career. And I think that aspect is important to point out because that even makes it even more challenging to Eva rapper, mine's around like, what we're even seeing in the documentary, especially toward the tail end of the career that part three tries to touch on, but doesn't really quite fully get at. What the documentary covering from this perspective of, I'm just trying to be here for Kanye as a friend, you see them acknowledge the fact that perhaps he might have once called slavery a choice by 2018, and that was in that interview with TMZ, but you don't see them try to square fully the man who said slavery was a choice with the artists who has contended with and sort of use the Thirteenth Amendment as sort of a rallying cry for not only just his music but his entire career, the way that he is put himself given his underdog mentality to not just his music, but to entering fashion boardrooms to like pursuing all these endeavors is because of years of slavery that he then tries to completely disregard by 2018. So it's really hard also to even sort of wrap your mind around that and like the genius documentary offers some glimpse into that. Especially contend with it over the span of an hour and a half as part three is, I mean, it's really dizzying. I think it was just more so a headache and a reminder that of all that we've tried to understand about Kanye. And I don't know if that's a good thing yet. It feels like a doozy as of this moment. Yeah, I mean, it's like, no matter what happens outside of the music, that's going to be brought in. And he's always done that, but it was relatable. I can't, you know, relate to wanting to beat up Pete Davidson. I can't relate to some of the topics of class that he's now seemingly obsessed with, you know, when he met with Trump. He kept telling him like, we're American industry guys. And I'm like, that's where you're at with it now, right?.

"Like me? You know what I'm saying? Hold on one second. He's so precious with the peer pressure couldn't afford a cop so she ain't a daughter Alexis she has. He's known as a producer. He's known as a beat maker and just trying to get the world to hear him for how he wants to be heard. That stuff is really interesting. Right, right. Well, first of all, Stephen, I know you bring up the Rockefeller meeting as to say, this is Kanye at his most relatable. I don't know if this is a testament to me getting older, but who I related to the most were the executive assistants. Trying to do their job on the phone and all of a sudden, if you were an executive assistant trying to do your job and this man walks into your office and plays you music that you did not make an appointment. Yes, I have been Kanye, but oh my God, I was like, I don't know what I would have been able to do in that situation. And I think maybe it's a testament to him being relatable of course because we've all been in that position where we just have to believe in ourselves. But I think that also separates Kanye from the rest of us, which is how self possessed he has been to get him to this point and in this case it is a compliment because that self belief is required to get to where he is today. So I'm not knocking that at all. I was just like, as a mere mortal, I was like, oh my God, what is happening? For me, more relatable was like, his retainers. That was like really the best supporting actor of the first act. No matter where he was, just like where am I retainers? I got to check this out. And the fact that he's talking to other musical giants with his retainer and I was just like, was it Scarface? It was just like doing on the table. Are these had to be like, get that off the table? That was in your mouth. Right. As a kid who grew up with containers, I was like, yo, like this is why this was the guy I fell in love with. Before he was round through the wire, he rapped through some wires, you know what I mean? Once you get to that third part, all of a sudden it's trying to be 2005 to the present, it becomes a really shapeless mess. In a way, it is kind of an interesting metaphor for Kanye's career, right? You have such clarity early on. That first bunch of albums have such clarity to them. They're flawed, but they're flawed in the most interesting possible ways. And then eventually there is just this runaway freight train. And how do you even convey everything that's going on? It's such a whirlwind, and you know, we've been talking about Kanye West for a while now. You know, we're talking about the traumas that affected his life and the losses that affected his life. I mean, but along the way, there have been people who've really been hurt by his behavior, and we haven't even been able to start to unpack that. It was really interesting to see cuda and chique tried to create a full circle moment of part three, which as you said, basically picks up from what 2005 onward and tries to frame the making of Jesus king as sort of a full circle moment in that he's trying to invoke the Kanye West of Jesus walks. And now Cooney and chike are back into the full back to documenting his life..

"The giant looked in the mirror and sees nothing. The loss of her is clearly a massive, massive tipping point trauma in his life. I did want to talk a little bit about the documentary, which, you know, when you hear there is a four and a half hour Kanye documentary. It's an interesting but very, very flawed piece of work. What did you guys think of the documentary? So what's really interesting about this documentary, what I'm at once fascinated by intrigued by, but also frustrated by, is how the director's cootie and chica sort of operate within his life. Because it seems very true to their experience and that they act as the really concerned friend who want to be there as a presence, but don't really know what to make of that otherwise. And I think that also kind of speaks to, I guess, the isolation and his career at this moment because like you said, Steven, like fame and success, especially to the extent that Kanye has experienced very, very few of us are going to understand that in each other's lifetimes. There's a reason why Kanye invokes Michael Jackson as a point of comparison because he might have been the only other person to really have understood that. The way that this documentary operates is that like, okay, we get to see Kanye's career grow and evolve and we get to see how all these different traumatic events sort of play out into his life and fast forward through a bunch of it as the director sort of lose contact with him, but maybe it's because they felt it wasn't their place or maybe because it kind of speaks to how we as a society don't know how to reckon with or we don't have the literacy to compare and what it's like to live with bipolar disorder. Any of these things, it seemed like the film didn't really quite know how to venture into these particular subjects. But I think as fans, it's also easy to kind of get frustrated by that. And as pop culture fans, we want to know more. We're super curious about this stuff. So that's neither like a rave or a pan or anything like that. It's just really fascinating to consider. I had a lot of hope, you know, obviously what it came out. Especially as journalists were like, great. Maybe we'll get both sides of the story. I felt like for a while, we were all kind of cootie, right? Here we are. We get introduced to this person who we're drawn to because of his drive, his passion, obviously his just undeniable talent, and it's like, okay, well, I'm like when we're at now, let's document this. Let's go for the ride. And Christina's point, like as things are progressing, it almost felt like cootie doesn't know what to do with himself when he's in certain situations or what side of the story is telling. I think he was like, I signed up to document what I thought might be the rise of the next great artist..

"Like, it's harder to sort of justify that sort of behavior, even if he is drunk and just sort of like acting in the moment. It becomes harder to sort of, I guess, justify that sort of behavior, even if the public spectacle does make for good conversation, right? There are like a lot of inflection points, I think what the documentary genius gets at also is the donda shaped hole that seems to exist in his life. This is probably the most tangible depiction of what that has looked like. Because I think for fans, we've all kind of come to speculate what that's looked like. We've all kind of come to understand it, especially with 8 O 8s and heartbreak immediately following that life event. But I think in the documentary, I don't think I ever really understood it until I saw just the warmth that donda exuded and this sort of presence that she had in his life. This was maybe the first time where I'm understanding like, oh my God, this is what he was missing in his life after all these years, and I can't even understand what that's even like. But I feel like with this documentary, I do get the most tangible representation or the most tangible depiction of what that might look like. So the answer is, I don't know, it could be anything. Right. Yeah, I mean, it's telling. I mean, donda west died in November of 2007. And she died suddenly, basically complications from a cosmetic procedure. So it was sudden and his response to it as we see in the documentary is to immediately kind of throw himself into work and not really take a break and process it the way he might have. And that does seem like a major tipping point. At that time, I was actually living in Chicago. I was reporting for rolling out magazine, which if you watch the documentary, two different rolling out magazine reporters are interviewing him in studio scenes..

"Anytime he said he wanted to do something, he did it. Y'all can't match my hustle. You can't catch my hustle. You can't fathom my love dude like yourself in a room doing 5 feet a day for three summers. He tested the limits of what our sonic palette is, right? It's like, you know, obviously if we want to go through the school route, drop out late registration, graduation. But then we talk about 8 O 8s and heartbreaks. When I lived in Chicago, I was living by myself and that album felt like a very lonely, almost like heartbreak album for like a better word. And that got me through a lot of cold winters, pun intended. In Chicago, because at that point, I'd come along for the ride with this guy who does worldbuilding every album doesn't sound exactly like the last, but it takes his music and what he wants to do forward. And so my beautiful dark twisted fantasy. It was like, okay, I felt like lyrically and just vision wise he had it down. We had a whole film tied to that. There was like a whole just moment. I think that's when we started to see that this guy doesn't just make albums. He tries to create experiences. And that was so just wild and refreshing to see an experience. And just all of those elements of what was making him below and grow in front of us was just so captivating to watch. And I just couldn't stop watching. And I felt like, sure, as things progressed and he got more successful, you started to hear some of that every man, you know, personality fade away a little bit, but it was still there and now obviously I think that's, again, what we're trying to figure out. Where did it go? Because I think that's what drew us in. And I would say that it almost kind of stopped at yeezus. Yeah, I mean, I do think it's telling that when we're talking about our favorite Kanye moments. We're really the three of us are kind of fixating on those first 5 records, right? So if I'm naming probably my favorite Kanye song is probably all of the lights from my beautiful dark twisted fantasy. Let's actually hear a little bit of it. "I feel like I can't sell to you that I'm going to come up and take your life. I'm not going to rap to you. Go, we only take your life, 'cause I think that's what's hot, what's industry ready. Now, I don't give a about the industry, man. When he did through the wire on the college dropout, which is something that he talks about in this documentary, he's rapping through a wire because his jaw has been broken in a car accident, and it's this very relatable and humble, there was a humility to the way that he presented himself as an artist. And as these subsequent albums rolled out, you heard him find his voice more and more and find this power more and more. And so by the time you get to albums like my beautiful dark twisted fantasy, you are just hearing this guy at the top of his game, sonically and as a rapper and as a presence, that is remarkable, but when you're assessing the entirety of his recorded work, the ability to separate the art from the artist feels impossible because the art is the artist. It's happened with some of his earlier stuff, but can you imagine someone covering a recent Kanye West's song? That's true. Yeah, I don't think I'd be able to imagine that at all, Steven. Happy here for it though. For sure. I don't know. The song, I guess. I mean, before we kind of get to unpacking this enormous creative legacy and all the controversies around it, like what are your favorite Kanye works, like that to you captures who he is at his best. For me personally, Steven, that is tricky because I think for much of his career with every single album came sort of an evolution or like a new phase in his career that made it much more exciting that really added to our understanding as Kanye really sort of complicated it. So when we first get to the college dropout, right? Like you said, Steven, and there is this humility. And more specifically, he is able to sort of seamlessly navigate these two divisive spaces within hip hop, which is the mainstream commercial successes that is labeled at the time..

"B news. Welcome to the show, Gavin. Hey, thank you guys. Good to be here. It is great to have you both. So the Netflix documentary genius is split into three acts, act one subtitled vision, documents his early career as Kanye's struggles to get a record deal, act two subtitled purpose captures the difficult process of recording Kanye's debut album the college dropout and act three subtitled awakening tries to cover everything since 2005 as filmmakers cootie Simmons, and chique oza drift in and out of Kanye's orbit, Kanye's beloved mother donda dies, and the rapper himself behaves more and more erratically. We're gonna get to our thoughts on genius, but we also want to assess Kanye West's career, the rapper and producer has released 11 albums that's counting donda two, which Kanye recently dropped on his own proprietary streaming device, which costs $200. He's won 22 Grammy Awards and been nominated 75 times, including an album of the year nomination this year for donda, but Kanye's career has been mired in controversy. He's feuded with Taylor Swift and Drake. He famously once said George Bush doesn't care about black people during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina at one point he also said slavery was a choice. He was sentenced to two years probation after fighting with a paparazzi photographer. He was an outspoken supporter of then president Trump. He's currently an acrimonious divorce proceedings with Kim Kardashian and he's threatened her boyfriend Pete Davidson. He's also spoken publicly about living with bipolar disorder, as well as opioid addiction. We should note that Kanye West legally changed his name to Ye last year, but we're going to refer to him as Kanye. In this conversation for the sake of clarity. So as you can see, there was a lot to unpack here. Christina, I know you've followed Kanye's career for a long time. And I know you were in Atlanta for one of those stadium shows where he played donda for huge crowds. I want to start out by assessing his body of work. So give me your general thoughts on Kanye's music so far. Oh boy, did you see I was taking deep breaths because it's like, okay, we're writing a book here on Kanye West, but also because there is so much to talk about. I mean, I do think it's fact at this point that Kanye is one of the most influential living figures in hip hop today, most certainly. I would say in general, there is a lot to be nostalgic for. There is a lot to be fond of. Everybody's going to have a different answer as to when it becomes harder to forgive the artists for the sake of the art. So that is my basic summary. I'm so excited to talk about when we first each got into Kanye, though. So, oh man, if we're talking about body of work, there's the college dropout late registration and graduation Kanye that I literally grew up on, right? And as Christina said, he, to me, is one of the most influential people alive. And I think that's a testament to the track record literally that he produced from the gate up till now. And I think Kanye warrants all the flowers that he's gotten up to this point, but now we're trying to make sense of who he is, what he's doing at this point.

"Said the thing everyone was thinking. Kind of every step of the way with Kanye specifically Kanye's Internet presence, we're constantly asking ourselves what exactly is a performance and what's genuine. And that question only gets thornier when we're talking about a man who is a politely, I'll say concern. With controlling his public image. And I think that's part of why certain segments of the Internet spent a lot of years decades a decade, not really taking his actions all too seriously, kind of looking at Kanye's life as more entertainment than anything else, a performance by a performance artist. Formerly known as Kanye. When we talk about a performance by performance artist Kanye West, I think. You can't have that conversation without talking about the 2008 VMAs, yes. A night that is impossible to forget. And features one of your favorite main characters. It's true. So obviously, we are alluding to the night Kanye West, crashes the stage at the VMAs. Taylor. I'm really happy for you. I'm gonna let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. That video being single ladies parentheses put a ring on it. The thing about that moment is that he, again. Kanye kind of wasn't wrong. And importantly, that moment does become a meme, along with the moment from 2005 during that benefit, the still of Kanye and Mike Myers is just ingrained in my brain. And the phrase I'm gonna let you finish is just you don't even have to finish it for people to know what you're saying. Were there perhaps more appropriate venues to say Taylor Swift, your video shouldn't have won? Yeah, and he admitted that later. He did. And the thing is at the beginning of his career, his career as a rapper as a producer as an Internet main character as an auteur as a provocateur. A lot of names for yay, mister west. He gained a reputation as a truth teller, willing to speak back to a mostly white music establishment. Whether it was appropriate or not. Which only made his later maga turn so much more disconcerting to watch. But before we get there, we have to talk about what is perhaps the biggest moment in his Internet career. The sentient BBL herself who will never miss she has a BBL. Kim Kardashian baby. She enters the pictures and things take off, rockets of the goddamn moon. I think it's hard to overstate how powerful this union was. Pop culturally. Yes. In 2012, when these two start dating, you combine Kanye West's calling it a rising star seems wrong at this point. He's an incredibly established artist. His risen star with Kim Kardashian influencer one invented the genre of influencing as we now know it. He captures this much broader audience of the Internet because there's nothing that a Kardashian or a Jenner does. That is it fodder for a viral Internet news cycle. And that's by design. Thank you, mommy. But now Kanye is a part of that. Yes, and he to be clear is fully aware of the power that he is creating by merging his fame with Kim's. He was obsessed with Kim for years before they actually got together. Totally, it really does feel almost medieval like royal in the way that these families combined. Yeah. Very York, very war roses. No, I see exactly you chose the perfect reference for me and you know it. I know. To give you a brief rundown of the war of roses of our era, there's the bound two video. He released starring topless Kim. The wedding in 2014, there's the Vogue cover from the same year, and then there's the portmanteau kimye, and I don't really know how much Chelsea you need to say beyond that. Okay, but I do think anecdotally, we must talk about the time that Kanye West trapped Kenny G sex. Curly hair. Kenny G in a room full of roses for Valentine's Day as a gift. And also the time that they had a kid and named her northwest and the Internet just lost its mind. I feel like more people cared about the name of Kim and Kanye's first child than they did about the royal babies. Is that inaccurate? Maybe not more than, but certainly to tie back to the earlier comparison we were drawing. The same amount of fervor that one feels for a baby that potentially could become a freaking monarch. One of the biggest moments of their relationship was when Kim was robbed in Paris. This was not quite ten years ago, but in October of 2016, Kim Kardashian then Kim Kardashian west was robbed at gunpoint in her hotel room during Paris fashion week. Which by all accounts, including her own, was absolutely just harrowing and traumatic and really impacted their entire family, which is completely understandable. Of course. The month after Kim was robbed at gunpoint, Kanye ended a concert quite abruptly. But right beforehand, he said, Jay-Z call me, you still in called me, Jay-Z, I know you got killers, please don't send them in my head, just call me. Talk to me like a man. And the next day he was hospitalized, and it was, I think the first time most of the public started to see that he wasn't just this kind of grandiose provocateur who's every move was a bit to get attention. But a man struggling with something. I think it actually is the moment to bring up the old Kanye here, do you think? I think so. I think so. Yes. So obviously the phrase I miss the old Kanye, the lyric hints by Kanye himself at a break in this public persona that many of his followers at the time attributed to the death of his mother, donda west, who died in 2007 from complications due to a botched cosmetic surgery that Kanye had actually paid for. So even before he officially, I believe 2019 reveals that he has bipolar disorder. They're part of his kind of Internet imprint is bound up with this idea that Kanye is experiencing some shit. Whether it's grief or exhaustion or something else, everyone kind of knows there's something going on, but in the 2016 era, I think most people chalked it up to stress over what happened to Kim, which totally fair, however, after that episode, he totally understandably takes this break from public life for a few months, but as we all know where this story is going, Kanye West is a person who can not stay away from the call of the Internet and it's attentions. After the break, we'll be back to talk about his 2020 presidential run. Everything that has happened since, oh, is that all? A lot. Yeah. We bit.

"The filling the team. This is the rumor report with angela on the breakfast club. Kanye west has filed legal documents in la. He wants to change his name to from a murray. West is just simply gay. So that's just why is wrong with you know just nickname like i gotta go to feel like he should keep. Aw yeah we only know one kind. Yeah and by the way we've only known one kind year before there was a cognac and he must also get rid of the west part to he just wants it to be just like maybe a symbol mom name. Carney figured he'd like his name. Yeah that's that's true too. That could be part of the reason. He wants to change it. Might it might be dramatic in a way to you. Know what i mean. No i don't so we'll see if the judge does sign off on. Yeah you still any still gonna be called on you know whatever that'd be wondering. So they're going to admit up to thirty eight thousand fans that's less down sixty three thousand people at the same event that he did two other times. They're gonna do again. Well they say one is going to be different said every other. No but i told you why this is actually great. And i love what he's doing because the album is named after his mom. This album is about his mom. He has to build as much anticipation for this album as possible. In the fact he did it twice in the place he was born and now he's doing one in the place. He was raised with his mom and i heard that they're they're building his house. Broken doing replica of the house that he grew up with so this and they're saying the album is really going to come out right after. Don't believe you can't just put out a project about your mom and away. So i respect the roll out the door. Let's all i know is kind of puts. His puts his asthma and drake drops. "Been in eventful couple of weeks in kanye west. Most weeks with gagnaire eventful. These have been unusually publicly. Eventful has been threatening to put out donde for the last couple of weeks. I should qualify this by saying we are recording in the second week of august. I'm going on vacation but times comes out. Maybe don to will be out. Tvd could happen. You never know but enough has happened with gonyea that has been really front and center in my mind that i felt like i wanted to talk to people who had been there. Watching kanye has had to release events for donde both them at mercedes benz stadium in atlanta a first one he played a bunch of music and stomped around the center of the field for an hour and change. The second one was a much more curated affair. Data from one siaga was the creative director. There was a live stream of kanye and friends pudding. I would say finishing touches but nothing is finished. As of this moment so putting touches onto the album and conway sleeping on livestream very the artist is divorced and then he gave another performance. A more ambitious one Broader in scope one than the first event. They're still tens of thousands of fans in the stands but on the stadium floor. Connie was sitting in this kind of acetic setup with a mattress and a few items of clothing and also kind of stomped around. But there were hundreds of extras creating much more of a visual spectacle. And then the end of the show he or someone like him ascended out of the stadium up through the beam of light into the sky or very very high. They technically leave the stadium. I was blessed to know. Many people who were there for night to i was not able to go. I was sick on the first one and the second one. I was on deadline. Which is unfortunate one two punch. However to my buddy's rachel tashin from g. q. and steph jaka from vogue. Were there on the second one and so drop them attacked. I said come on podcast and so here we are. What's up. I can't more opulent thing than to be all pop gas a low. We are on the private jet when we when we got the tax was that the puma jet was at the candidate is it. Can you explain just for for those who don't know what is the logic. Puma jet ferrying press the kenya event. What's the business advocates there. What's going on there. We don't now okay. it's. I thought it was odd because connie has spoken ill of puma qh so we were wondering is that a jay z. Puma connected jet. Perhaps there was a yes. I think it was jay z. Connected judge because someone on twitter. You know we were course following what everyone was saying about the event very closely online week leading up to things and someone posted a picture of our plane and said jay z is here. I saw that and we really surely is not because he wasn't on that plane. Let's first of all jay z. Would not i mean much. I like both of you. Jay z would not take the same planet. Does he would keep it up another right because he stepped janka all be jay z. Does not like chapo. Elena like you. I don't think he doesn't understand the pleated skirt. Yeah i just don't get. I don't get it like five different tartans like what's the by.
