Antone brings heat in push for Cincinnati Reds' rotation
"Reds played tonight and three hours against the kansas city. Royals perhaps not with these same amount of excitement as the night before her. Green and nikola delo pitched tj anton in relief last night against the dodgers and again that ended with a four four tie. I will admit to you. I get the purpose behind the rule that a team on defense can roll the inning over and basically ended prematurely as a fan. That's not much fun. Tony larussa has said as much. Tony larussa and i are on the same page about anything. That's saying something but above and beyond the outcome of the game which obviously doesn't matter. Tj antone pitch last night and he was phenomenal two innings. His fastball was ninety. Seven ninety eight ninety nine killer slider filthy curve five strikeouts two innings gave up. Just a hit. This is a guy who was a bit of a revelation. Last year made his major league debut with the reds early in the season started. Four games came in and relief and nine others and did a really really nice job. Here's david bell on what he liked from. Tj last night looks very lockton. Yeah maybe could've been the best basketball. I've seen include. Let's santa law so good last year. But his fastball of really good is everyone which means it just locked in a totally kind of grown accustomed to tj being very focused and determined so even those beverly in the spring doesn't surprise me at perching david bell last night talking about t j anto. I don't wanna make too much out of one. Spring training outing the didn't count. There is a lot of foolishness and doing that. But he is a part of a mix of guys who will ultimately answer one of the critical questions about the reds this spring. Which is who's gonna make up the back into the rotation right and even if he doesn't end up as a starter he could be a valuable member of a bullpen. that said goodbye to two quality. Relievers this offseason and rice laziest and archie bradley. But what role will tj antone bien after a good two thousand twenty. Here he is and what role he would like to be. Yeah i wanna start but wherever those. Tv's all right. Good short concise. It's the right answer. You don't get the sense just listening to that that he's going to be upset if he's not a starting pitcher but that is what he's been for most of his professional career one hundred and eleven appearances in the minor leagues one hundred and nine as a starter with different levels of success. I don't think there was anything about just looking. At his minor league statistical profile that would have suggested that he would emerge last. Year is valuable arm but he was. Era to eighty again pitched started four games when needed member wade. Miley had to miss some time. Sonny gray mr starr disc- he came out of the bullpen. Nine times and did a nice job. He'd really did a nice job last year. So now the question is does he factor into the mix a little bit more in the race to be the last starter.
Boston Red Sox trade Benintendi to Kansas City Royals in three-team deal that includes New York Mets
"We did have a A trade godown wasn't a blockbuster. But i think certainly noteworthy is that. The red sox have been shopping. Andrew benintendi for quite a while. Now and i didn't understand why this guy was a top ten pick by the red sox not that long ago but here are the details in this three way trade between boston. The mets and kansas city. The red sox receive outfielder slash d. H. franci cordeiro Right handed pitcher josh win. Chaussee three players to be named later one from the mets to from the royals. The royals get outfielder. Andrew benintendi and the mets received outfielder khalil. ali now benintendi. As soon as he showed up last year he got hurt and he was offered a year. He only played like two weeks and batted one. Oh three he had a strained ribcage but coming into last season he was a career. Two seventy seven hitter and averages about eighteen home runs a game and he's due to make six point six million this year in his second. Rv'er so he has Another year. Sorry i know he has another two years after that. So i argue but the royals will now put benintendi in left field every day because if you think about with mary field i guess he's an outfielder our second baseman so a combination of him. Edward olive arison. Michael eight taylor. But the red sox for their part we'll get cordeiro which is a mix of alex dugo number. How highly regarded wasn't a dodger system. Hunter renfrow talked about yesterday as blooms gonna take a chance on him and that park but cordeiro as to thirty six hitter and he strikes out thirty five percent of his trips to the plate
This week in history: Chicago Cubs win 2016 World Series, first since 1908
"The Chicago Cubs win their first World Series championship since 19 0 wait. Ben Zobrist hits a go ahead double in the 10th inning, beating the Indians ate seven in a thrilling game seven that had been delayed by rain. Chicago becomes the first team to overcome a 31 serious deficit since the 1985 Kansas City Royals on that's just
Chicago White Sox clinch winning season, plus current playoff field
"Turn your head because I certainly did over the past couple of days maybe I got washed up at a bit of college football, the NFL return and but I didn't realize the Chicago White Sox. We're now in first place in the American league central after going eight and two in their last ten games they are. Let's see a game up on the Minnesota twins who have figured things out and are now in second place in that. Leaves the Cleveland Indians losers of six straight all the way down to third place at twenty and twenty one and four and a half games out. So so the Indians have gone from first place in the division arguably the team to beat in the American League two. Now, a wildcard team outside of the top two in the division and four and a half games out just that quickly I mean, don't you know six in a row and when the white sox are winning four that's at least. Four Games in the last four days and with a deficit of four and a half, it's gone from a half a game to four and a half year. By the time Friday rolled around you have the Detroit Tigers at twenty and twenty six, and then the Kansas City royals at twenty and twenty eight. Neither of them are atrocious baseball teams, which honestly is a bit better than I had anticipated for both of them but neither of them are going to be infecting the playoff picture with their presence. Where do we go here? The Chicago White SOx thirty and sixteen winners of four, straight eight and two in their last ten they swept the Tigers this past weekend. Let's take a look at their scheduled down the stretch here. See who they have coming up. They have four with the Minnesota twins who I just spoke about being a game back. So this'll be a fantastic series between the white. SOX and the twins it'll be in Minnesota Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday some fantastic pitching matchups in those. Then they travel to Cincinnati to Cleveland and retell her for return home ver-. CHICAGO. So the white sox tough schedule down the stretch with clubs over five hundred and then the reds mixed in there. So we'll see if they can continue to play quality baseball they continue to be led by Jose Abreu. He's crushing the Baseball fifteen home runs. Forty eight RB is Tim Anderson is currently your Major League leader. In batting average, he'd be your batting champion at three, sixty two. If he qualifies in Thirty six games, one, hundred, fifty, two are bats I think he has just qualified fine when it comes to that statistic on the pitching side of things Lucas g Alito. Continues to pitch well, Dallas Kaikal not a lot of people talking about it but six in two two, one, nine era talk about a successful year Then you got mad foster coming out of the bullpen with a one three, one era so Chicago a well rounded team they were my surprise bic in the American league at least they got the memo because. My Cincinnati reds on the other side will get to them but they still haven't figured things out sell but hey, one or two in regards to surprise picks. So the summer I'll take that absolutely. Did I think they'd be a first place team I didn't think the white sox will be a first place team but I certainly thought they were good enough to. Make the wild card and make the playoffs. Now we're talking standard one, sixty, two, five teams but yeah, certainly a pleasant surprise on the south side of the windy city.
Reds rally for walk-off win on Kimbrel's wild pitch, split doubleheader with Chicago Cubs
"The Kansas City Royals doubleheader split for the Cubs in Cincinnati. Yu Darvish, pitching six shutout innings in the opener comes blanking the Reds three, Nothing nightcap goes. The red 6 to 5 is closer Craig Kimbrel blew a 54 lead The winning run scored on his third wild pitch of the inning. The teams will wrap up their
New York Mets' DeGrom and Yankees' LeMahieu Both Placed on Injured List
"Jacob. degrom the mets we all know Jacob degrom, but he was crash from his start on Friday. With a against the phillies with some next stiffness, he'll start his planning on starting against the marlins Miami and you know. I'm surprised actually pitching to be completely honest because. The season is pretty much I. Mean I guess that he would be. He would basically just be doing it so he could get paid at this point, but I mean he would get his prorated salary regardless if he was playing or not at the mets are nine and fourteen therefore games out of the. Four Games out of the East lead they've already lost one two of their best players with marcus, stroman and Noah syndergaard. Know. Why he would even play. It doesn't look like the mets are really going to be doing anything in the division. So. I mean. A. Whole I'll just come back through another game and then and then pretty much just opt out of the season if I were him but. You know he's he's out there playing and he's doing a great job this season and you know you gotta come you got you give him his props for endlessly fighting for the New York mets even then they haven't. You know they've been trying to hold onto whatever relevancy they've had since the I think it was Twenty Sixteen World Series, Twenty Fifteen, twenty, six world series when they lost to the Kansas city royals but alongside him another one in another player from the Bronx went down this weekend. Dj Lemay Hugh. Aaron Boone said the digital mayhew is going to be out for about two to three weeks. He was placed on the ten day de L. With thumbs strain. Suffered it just on a swing in the fourth innings. Nathan you've all the which is not. Not a good sign for the New York Yankees but I mean they're they brought up Miguel and do hard their defense is going to go down but their offense will stay. Will stay you know. Fairly even Keel for the most part I would say they would go down a little bit because Dj here's a four hundred hater and Miguel Angel Harz in anything like that. But I think M Miguel and do Haro. You'll love the at a little bit more power to the lineup. And? They'll lose a little bit of the base but I mean they're they're crews in right now. So I mean it's not going to hurt the Yankees a little too much.
Reds, Pirates games postponed as Cincinnati player tests positive for COVID-19
"This is sports talk later for Lance Encounters for 700 wlw. By the way. Hope you had a great weekend. As of right now, we are expecting the Reds to take on the Kansas City Royals tomorrow night. In Kansas City. That'll be an 805 1st pitch. We go on the air, with the Arnell carriers inside pitch at 705 Luis Castillo is said to get the ball against Brad Keller. Trevor Bauer is now scheduled to pitch on Wednesday, followed up by Sonny Gray. In the first game of a four game series against the Cardinals in ST Louis on Thursday, this after the weekend that was lost after Friday night raids beat the Pittsburgh Pirates and then a couple of hours after the game. We find out that a player tested positive. For covert 19. Saturday's game postponed Sunday's game postponed Ah, couple of things worth pointing out here. Seafront Rosecrans, who, by the way, covers the Reds for the athletic And doesn't awesome job. I've tweeted out a link to a piece that I think will guide you through everything happening with this team right now. But since Saturday, every Reds player has tested at least three times. The players were tested. Saturday, Sunday morning and this morning. Pittsburgh Pirates. Players were also tested in Cincinnati before they flew to Pittsburgh last night. Um As of now. Based on reporting from a couple of it from people who are close to this. There's only been one positive test on the Reds, and it was the player who found out that he was testing positive work over 19 on Friday night. That player has since tested positive again. But as of now and again, there's the latest round of testing results that they have to get. No other Reds player has tested positive. The Reds have yet to fly to Kansas City. They are supposed to fly to Casey tomorrow if they're cleared to play. The player who tested positive would have to be placed on the injured list. Somebody's going to have to be brought up to take his place. The The Pirates will be here in mid September, September 14th to the 16th so there is ample time to make up. Two games They missed right now. The Reds have 40 games remaining. There are 41 days between now and September, the 27th which is the end of the regular season, and so obviously they're not playing today They're going to play 40 games and 40 days to get to 60. They already have a double header scheduled Against the Cubs next weekend. But there is not only a Pittsburgh trip to Cincinnati, but the Reds also going PNC Park and so you can make up one of the games there if you have to. But as of now, The plan is to play. Tomorrow night against the Royals. Again. All of this is very, very fluid. As we've seen with the Cardinals as we've seen with the Miami Marlins, the good news is again. After the one player tested positive with that result being released. On Friday. Reportedly. No other Reds player has subsequently tested positive and also know Pittsburgh Pirates player As of right now 6 26 on Monday night, no other Pirates player Has tested positive. So there you go, Uh 513749 7800 The big £1.700 free call AT and T. Jerry is calling from Claremont County. Hi, Jerry. Jerry. Hope something happens. Jerry. Your wine? Yeah, sure. Go. Oh, well. A little question here if one Holding him and nobody there. Miles is okay. But they prayed about because they have to get tests back from the other players to ensure that there not also testing positive. Woman get their pink. Ooh, they did that. And so there are awaiting the latest the Siri's of results and they hope to play tomorrow. The Pirates also hope to play tomorrow. Yeah, this time, noting the Reds go to Kansas City before they do that they need to get to clear And for that to happen, they want to ensure there is no other players testing positive. Your city's okay. Well, yeah. I mean, the players are routinely testing positive testing, which is why we found out that a player tested positive on Friday night. Yes. Okay. Okay. Is that all right with you? Yeah. No. There was just a bad weekend without baseball. Yeah, Wass, I I don't I can't disagree with that. Ana would do anything about it. I wanna thank you very much. Thank you. Ok, thanks. Have a good evening. You you you do the same. The Miami Marlins. You may recall after the first weekend of the year they were in Philadelphia, and then again, they had a game scheduled against the Phillies. And on Sunday morning. They found out that a number of players on that team had tested positive for Cove in 19 And instead of baseball, swooping in and stopping the Marlins from playing. Instead, the players were allowed to vote. Whether or not they play now, I'm not sure why that would ever be the case. But that's that was the plan. That was the plan baseball let the Miami Marlins players vote via text by the way. On whether or not they want to play. They did play the game that day in Philadelphia, and then As it turned out that they had close to 20 members of their traveling party. The majority were players, obviously not all of them. The majority of players that a bunch of guys in there traveling party test positive for cocaine, 19 And then it took them forever to get back on the field where baseball is trying to do. Is prevented outbreak now. It is worth wondering. This. Today is the 17th of August regular season baseball ends on September the 27th. Obviously, everybody has off days built in, so there's time if you've got to miss a couple of days. What I do kind of wonder, though. Well, I think baseball has done the right thing here and frankly, I think they did the right thing with the ST Louis Cardinals. October. When we have 16 teams in the playoffs. And we're trying to squeeze a lot of Siri's in a very tight window. And ensure that the season the post season is over before we really get to cold weather in November. What's gonna happen when we have a situation with the team in the playoffs like the one that popped up for the Reds on Friday night? Positive test and now we're not going to play for a couple of days. Not playing for a couple of days in the regular season is really not that big a deal. Not playing for a couple of days in the postseason. Could have a significant short and long term impact. More on that coming up in the seven o'clock hour at Mohagher, 15. 30 is by how you can hit me up on Twitter. One of the best players in college football is has started a petition. "Code on this gorgeous Thursday we're going to talk to Tom Latham hall of Famer in just ten minutes so here's the skinny on the first run of the MLB draft yesterday another season going I don't even have a plan yet they're working on it but the draft is happening it resumes today later this afternoon first round in the outback and compensatory picks are done with the eleventh overall pick the white Sox drafted Tennessee it left handed pitcher Garrett crochet touch one oh one I guess the timer to big upper nineties power fastball nasty slider from the left side kinda long and lanky not not it's been in wispy as Chris sale but he is being compared to Chris sale to me that's always a little dangerous when you start comparing guys too you know the greats in the game but just because of the frame a really maybe the height more than the frame and kind of how he hides the ball little bit from the left side and that big nasty slider in the in the the power stuff that is being compared to Chris sale they said his stuff is a lot of people think it's stuff is almost every bit as good as a salacious is the kid from a and M. that went fourth overall to the Kansas City Royals I believe so that's encouraging first time since fifteen the white Sox use their top pick on a pitcher Carson Fulmer was the last the cubs draft Mount Carmel shortstop at Howard first time the cubs have selected a high school player with their topic you're extant strapped ain't show one done stand no Albert L. mora with the sixth pick in twenty twelve I think that was the o's first pick wasn't Alberto mora junior I'll take your word for the first time they grab a high school player with their first pick in the first round and as we told you earlier he is the first Chicago area high school position player to go in the first round since Jason worth way back in nineteen ninety seven doesn't happen often worry position player that a few pictures over the years J. son worth okay Justin was Philadelphia jail the cashier with Washington remember yeah yeah just what is a good player I mean in a nice career it probably got overpaid in Washington and he's from a downstate Illinois is that what it was he played he played here in the south suburbs figured out yeah I can't remember which high school but it wider net near near mark's neck at the nape if I'm not mistaken down on the south side entry source went on a very nice Group One World Series of course with the Phillies at a couple of great years at in Philly going to free agency that got paid big time by the handsome man then one reason or another tried to try out for the geico caveman yeah he remember he only like the full line I mean he had the big beard and long hair he had the hippie love going for sure for quite some time so here are the players themselves talking about being drafted by the respective teams on the north and south side we'll start with the eleventh pick Garrett crochet this is his reaction being drafted by the white Sox I knew kind of going into the draft they were shown some interest in that they are they like my profile on what I had to bring to the table there's not really much I know about why it starts a lot to learn just a culture that I'm excited to be able to join I feel like brawls with everybody I kind of been able to be heard from the same same thing that was going on I feel like I ended up right where I was supposed to end up I got an organization that leads me and I have an organization that just wants to see me doing a lot to like about that profile and sounds like the white Sox or static that they got him eleventh there was a lot of talk that they were going to go after Patrick Bailey at probably the best catcher in this draft the switch hitting catcher from NC state he went a couple picks later and here's that Howard was on that Jackie Robinson west team back in two thousand fourteen what a story mount Carmel's very on Chicago's very own being drafted by the north siders very tiny Dalal founder gets elected you know in the future but the whole the whole the whole accounting so it will open on the side of my family and number you get to work and I think it would be a great great experience the federation built to conquer the not the top what about it and you know how I progress you know all the time and I think you get the legal if you can find the Farr I don't want to make sure you're not work hard all right there you go this is the the TV this is Patrick in palatine on ESPN one thousand a Patrick Hey tell me you're going how are you good how are you buddy good I just wanted to quickly put some thoughts out there about starting the season even if if they are relegated season are a shortened season why not you know give the fans what they want in this way because you do have a CBA coming up next season and I think it would be at the best interest of the league itself could not go into a CD AC than having already screwed up a year before that's why it's very important you have to have a sense of I mean it really is in it you know we we know the way the PR the you know what what the blowback I guess is going to be directed at both sides you know I think we're learning that more and more people are dying the owners cries of poverty I mean we we pulled that question a couple weeks ago and surprisingly more people were understanding on the side of the players I think twenty years ago there's no way that would have been the case but considering everything that's happened they've already missed a golden opportunity but it is important that they get on the field they play some kind of season it's going to be a tough runner to go shooting next year this certainly isn't helping but even if it is just fifty games Hey I'll sign me up I'll take it and.

"Blue Jays with a sweep of the Kansas city royals else they take six of seven in the season series from Kansas City and my biggest takeaway from this series is that Toronto overs are going to be very profitable the rest of the way look Thomas Pin on Sean Reid Foley Jacob wags back very good in this series but those three guys and own pitched into the sixth same thing for re re fully pitched five wakes back pitches into the seventh actually only ten in strikeouts in this series those Toronto pitchers so a lot of balls in play the royals just didn't capitalize they were to for four divergence position in one of these games so that's the big thing here for Toronto their margin for error the rotation is exceptionally small but the offense offense is coming around Kevin Zhou starting to hit. Let him or juniors got fifteen homers Boba shut now off. He'll be a hitter Mortis correal juniors having a a big year that nobody has paid attention to. There's a lot to like about the young bats in this Toronto lineup and a lot to dislike about the starting staff in about this bullpen now they trade jobe genie Daniel Hudson Aaron Sanchez so this is going to be a young bullpen the rest of the way not a whole lot of like ten giles pitching hurt and the rotation not a Lotta strikeouts to go around for these guys so my biggest takeaway here you're outside of the Blue Jays playing better <hes> certainly here especially in the offensive side is that they're going to play a lot of overs with a pitch to contact pitching staff in a ballpark that is not good at all for that at the Rogers Centre and also here over the last two months of the season. They'll play a lot of division. vision games against teams that have either good ballparks or pretty good offenses so a lot of overs likely coming here for the Toronto Blue Jays the rest of the what the Indians split the first two with the astros absolutely dominated by Justin verlander in game one then they get their Jose or Kinney and the bullpen in game two <hes> Zach. Please SEC almost got danger three run double from your <hes> your agree l. <hes> that was just inside the line. We'll see what the new Look Lineup looks like for the Indians in game three they face Garrett Cole but with Yasser tweet friend morass they're gonNA lengthened the light up in a big way. The Indians have an offer puts it can compete now but obviously they patchwork situation with this rotation here after Clemenger and Bieber you know police acts the guy who's fifth was to runs higher than his E._R._A. Coming into last night what goes a bomb Danny Salazar now his first start and six hundred seventy four days comes tonight Corey Kluber Uber maybe going out on a rehab start next week but still you know he was terrible on April before the injury. Let's see what he looks like now lots of interesting things therefore the Indians but if they can get this win over Garrett Cole tonight I guess is a big shot in the arm morale-booster for this team and we'll see if they're able <unk> carry that over as they welcomed the angels here this weekend finally the comes in the cardinals split the first two games not a whole lot of offense to speak of here in this series Craig Kimbrel role. If the again last night gave up a couple hits got a little bit dicey in this series cardinals to for twenty two with a runner in scoring position and one of those hits belongs to miles. Nicholas didn't do anything at the trade deadline get. I'll talk about that here in a couple of minutes but the biggest takeaway from this series for me another excellent Let's start from you. Darvish shout nine didn't walk anybody since about mid May he's been really really really good for the cubs I don't know how many people in the market have caught up to that but you darvish there was a line move on Darvish in that game against that a win right but you darvish has been phenomenal here over the last little awhile definitely WanNa factor that into your handicapping lots of trade deadline stuff. You're Kinda group together some of the acquisitions some of the different things that have gone on here. Let's start with Houston. You know Houston Kinda lying in the weeds a little bit..
Homer Bailey, Royals And Kevin Meryl discussed on The MLB Show
"Trade I want to talk about is homer Bailey. Another Kansas City royals former Kansas City royal goes to Oakland <hes> for Minor League infielder Kevin Meryl <hes> This is the One hundred twenty thousand trade between <hes> the royals was and the as <hes> in the past twenty five years. Sometimes it seems like these clubs only deal with each other <hes> homer Bailey is actually pitching somewhat effectively so this that's why the as won- in in case that comes surprised just anybody who's familiar with his work the past couple years with the reds yeah I mean I think you can get a little too far. When you're saying he's been pitching effectively? This is his first season since twenty fifteen with an era of six and even in his erase still four point eight which is worse than league average.

"We kind of overlooked Brad, Keller didn't realize how good he was last year to the tune of almost two ERA, and he athlete twenty five twenty six starts. So he appeared in forty games. So he really he really kind of performed very well like you said, and he definitely will be on the rise him in June, and considering the contracts are so great. They. They're gonna be on team for a while. We were looking at your top prospects. Obviously, you're very top heavy in your top prospect. You don't have a lot of depth in the system. You've handful a guys that are decent project prospects. Most of our project guys only one guy in the top one hundred we noticed that your pitchers in single a and AA they're listed a starters. And they're starting games. They're starting like nine or ten games last year in AA or single lie and they've only throwing Li twenty nine pitches. Twenty eight pitches is that by the sign that they're just throwing out there like an opener type situation where they're just kinda like, hey, like, we just wants the other due to three innings get out in the mount see companies and get him out or are. They just getting in trouble. And that's why they're averages are a little high. Or is it just coincidence that it just happens to be that they only had a handful starts? I think the lower levels that kinda just liked to try out a lot of different guys. Just for short starts just to get him, you taste 'cause I think you don't want to pigeon hole. Guys, a starters relievers too early unless it's pretty clear that a guy doesn't have a third pitch than he has to go to the bullpen or something like that. So in their team that needs to find starting pitching wherever they can find it. So you gotta try out really every arm and the organization to give them a shot. So you know, they they've got and they they went very heavy with pitchers in last year's draft. Because there really weren't any pitchers of note in the organization before last year's draft. And then they've helped they've added to that a little bit in with trades last year from August. They got worry Lopez. Why should mention as part of the rotation mix? He could be in there as well. And then also with when they traded Calvin Harare. They got back a a young arm Johansen Morell. So there are some younger guys that they've started. Adding, I think the draft a lot of how this rebuild goes is going to depend on. Astor's draft. They they took college pitchers with the first five their first five picks net draft, including the seventeenth overall, pick Brady singer who was a college pitcher college player of the year last year out of Florida. And you know, he hasn't pitched in a affiliated game yet. He's done some made some outings in instructional leagues over the winter just because they want to kind of rust his arm a little bit. He had he had a minor injury. They wanted to avoid tweaking. So he'll make his professional debut really this year. And I think he could be a quick riser. We'll see how they are bringing through the system. But you know, he's a college guy that's pitched in the college World Series on some of the bigger stages. You can't as an amateur, and and he's you know, they like his bulldog mentality that think he's got a chance to be a, you know, number two or even a number one at the major league level. So, and that's something they really need because they don't have anything like that in the organization right now. Like, I said June. Keller are more back to the rotation. Guys. Duffy has shown flashes of that. But he's been very inconsistent. And so I think they need a guy like singer to be that guy. And they also got some other good yard young arms. Daniel Lynch was a guy that wasn't really. He's a third rounder out of Virginia that wasn't really that heralded. But then once he started pitching in the minor leagues scouts took notice said. Whoa. This guy is actually pretty good. And he may be some people are saying he may be better than singer already. So he's a he's a left-hander to kind of keep an eye on. He advanced all the way to I think the high ball last year..

"Book. Yes, you do. And it's called Powerball, and we're going to get into it. But I I have to do a complete transparency here. I'm a longtime reader and a fan. So. When I got the chance to interview you and especially about my favorite sport. And especially about your history. I I couldn't pass it up. So thank you for your time. Pleasure. The book is called Powerball anatomy of a modern baseball game by count. This is your seventh title is that about right? That's right in the hot stove season. I read baseball books to keep me going until spring training. And I recently read nine innings. I think it was published back in nineteen eighty-two. Are you familiar with that one? Oh, sure, I was I was a huge fan when that book came out. And in fact, the way this book came together was an editor out of the blue came to me and said, rob I would love to write a modern day night innings and having been a fan of the book having read it probably three or four times. I would immediately intrigued I bet and given your history, and we're going to get into that. But be given your history. This book is almost an instant classic. And I don't think I'm overstating that hope though. I mean, we all sort of dream of being imprint forever earned having people. Pick it up in twenty years and think it's still relevant sense of immortality. Rob. Let's talk about your background you worked with Bill. James, right. And you are an early data pioneer. Can you give us a little bit of your bio? So we can talk about the book. I grew growing up. I was just a your typical rabid kids. Sports fan. I loved basketball and football and baseball, and I particularly loved the the Kansas City Royals. I grew up there. I was there in the late seventy s when they had these great teams that were competitive every season with the World Series eighteen eighty at cetera. So I just love the game was obsessed with with with sports, and especially the royals when I went to college for the first time I saw a day one. Basically, I happen to be in the bookstore and saw my first Bill James baseball abstract. I picked it up was immediately intrigued and knew this would something I'd never seen before. And I knew that it was for me. And I just became the biggest dole James stand in the world, basically and four years later four and a half years later, I was somehow lucked into a job working for Bill, which is my literally my dream job. What you wanna do with your life? If they act you that I would say well, I want to work for Bill game. I had no idea how to make that happen. Right. And then I just sort of style into it. That's amazing. Your new book Powerball anatomy of a modern baseball game is kind of a graduation ceremony from moneyball in a lot of ways, especially if you think about the Oakland A's aspect of it, can you tell us how you came to choose a game on September the eight th two thousand seventeen to elucidate your your take on the modern baseball game. Mirer? I we wanted a game that had all or turned out most of the element in high relief of the modern game. Which of course is typified by power pitching and power hitting. And that's hit the. Title. We also wanted a game with them big twists and turns them real moves in that that win expectancy graph that I write a little bit about book. So we had a number of games to choose from. But did aid Astros game, which seemed like a natural because it gave me the trae into money ball and writing about that and hard to believe it's been fifteen years now since the book came out, I know, right? And then the as clearly a Pitta Mayes, the Gnassinde movement toward a lot more data and looking at the numbers making your decisions based on that the object of instead of the subject of and of course, all of that stuff overblown to some degree the way it happened back, then, but it was a real thing right and had a huge influence, and then of course, the Astros probably best epitomized the evolution in those fifteen years since then the Astros do everything the as were doing time two million. And it was just a happy a happenstance, happy happenstance. The Astros wound up winning the World Series because we chose the game late September. So we knew they were in the playoffs. Right. They would win the World Series. Well, that was a quick turnaround that if you just pick that game at the end of September, you push this out pretty quickly. So this must have been topped out from from conception of book late September to delivering the manuscript sticking with either made thirty one or June one was about what nine months very quick for a book like this. You're is is a great turnaround time obviously top of list for this year's hot stove season. But I wouldn't ask you to pick your favorite child in a minute minute. When I talk about metrics. But I want to ask you about the concept of power losing. I really liked the way you kind of pulled this went out a little bit. Let's talk about the evolution of that. Because that seems to be something within the past fifteen years from moneyball two to your book Powerball. Let's talk about power losing. Can you unpack it for us? Well, sure, it's really more about transparency base teams would often go into a rebuilding process or they would never even bother trying to rebuild. They just didn't bother trying to compete. You look at people think about the golden age of baseball, for example in the nineteen fifties. It's called that all the time. Well, yes, there were a lot of wonderful things happening. But there was also the fact that basically New York team won the World Series every year, and with many of the teams in the majors not really competing now they were trying to compete, but realistically, they didn't have the money. They didn't have the personnel. They really weren't going to compete, but they would tell their fans every spring. Yeah. This is the year. Oh, anything can happen, right? Yeah. Anything can happen. Hardly ever. Hardly anything ever did happen right now that in the in the nineteen eighties that equation did change quite a bit when you had the nineteen eighties. It was the most competitive era in major league history. And I think it was great in the eighties different one every year. Because the money was sort of balanced anybody could compete, the Kansas City Royals had the highest payroll in the majors in nineteen eighty nine hundred nineteen ninety so and they were the smallest market or one of the very small markets. But of course, that went away a few years later, and then you saw this huge stratification in payroll, and that's where we're at. Now what teams are doing? Now is saying you know, what we're not even going to make any pretense. We're not going to tell you during spring training. This could be the year. Anything could happen. Look at our roster. It's not it's not going to happen. We're not when we don't have the talent. And it's much easier for everyone the media the fan to look at a roster in in March and say or April and say this team is not a ninety one team. It's a sixty seventy win team. You're back in the fifties. Nobody knew you could make some guesses, but you couldn't quantify these things that you can quantify everything with a fair degree of certainty not complete but you can tell whether a team is. I had the shot of the playoffs. Now every year someone will surprise us. But we're not surprised as we used to be because we're a lot smarter than we used to be. So now you've got teams like the cubs. And in the Astros, basically think telling the world, no, we're not going to be. We're not going to spend what right now what it would take to be competitive. It doesn't seem like a good use of our resources, and it's perfectly rational it does drive away at least short term yet. One of the reasons why we saw four percent drop in attendance this season. We're speaking with rob Neier a veteran baseball writer, and the author of his newest book Powerball anatomy of a modern baseball game. Okay. At the top. You mentioned power pitching power hitting. I'd met that. I am a dodgers fan. I watch. Chris taylor. Swing the bat. And I can't imagine that Ted Williams is okay with that. What importance does launch angle have in today's game. It has a great deal. And I will say that Ted Williams actually way ahead of his time. If you go back and look and look at the book that he published late sixties early seventies. He was preaching launch angle. More and more. Now players are five years ago ten years ago. No players bought into the stuff. They thought it was a joke. And now you go around baseball and talk to these guys and. Oh, yeah. A lot of maybe most players buy into the analytics, they grow up. They grew up with it. It was it was an historic. They read as kids their college coaches, preached it. They're they're mightily.

I have had no one a worm burns into your brain with a song, and you can't get it out of your head. I've had love gone wrong in my head all day long collaboration between pink and green singer, songwriters sports fan, who has. We've just recently found out has been at some pretty keep sporting events over the past few years. Hello, thank you for having me and yes, how would you have introduced herself thinking to myself Hamad injuries, Dallas green on a hockey podcast. Yeah, I don't. I don't know. I mean, I I was gonna ask. I was just wondering to see how you guys would rather get a good that. Okay, I think so. Yeah. Well, there's a couple of things about Dallas. I've learned. I remember hearing the story years ago, the first World Series. I remember watching was nineteen seventy seven dodgers versus but one of the best World Series early in my life was nine. Eighty, which was Philadelphia versus the Kansas City Royals. And I was cheering for the royals. I love George, Brad, but Philadelphia beat them. I didn't know this until recently, but you are named after the Phillies manager, Dallas green to which I say, thank goodness. Your dad's favorite player wasn't tug McGraw. Always. Always been an interesting story for me to tell. I think my father for giving a cool name for give me a cool name, but it is only because the Phillies one and because he because he bet money on the Phillies to win. Okay. Okay. And so it's more that he's gambler the I mean, here's a sports fans, well, but yeah, that's my mom wanted to name me. Graham Todd hyphenated Graham, Todd, green, and my dad said, no. And then the Phillies one and I got Dallas, which I feel like with all the respect. Thanks. Yeah. Father's lose that arguments. So you're lucky your dad's a forceful person? No, I'm assuming ahead. Somebody with the money. So what? What was it for you growing up in Saint Catharines, sports music? Both one was most. Yeah. Yeah. It was a moment that we're both good at just trying to have me and my sister just try tons of stuff. Yeah, kind of see what stuck. Yeah. So that included, you know, baseball and basketball early and also sign me up three tar lessons when I was eight, not because I really showed an interest in it just to see, you know that I think the idea of trying to offer their kids a bunch of opportunities that maybe they didn't have when they're younger. So I was always trying to be on the, you know, my dad coached me and little league, but also some for tar lessons and early on into high school. I realized that as much as I loved planning sports, I've seemed to accelerate more at the music side of things. So I, I talked to that, you know our sun now he's about to turn seven, and he's not big into sports, but he loves music is a matter of. Fact, his birthday's coming up. We're looking at purchasing drum set for them because he likes play. We took him into a drum store and he could've sat there all day. This important part of the band just you know. Okay, that's good. I like that the people musicians hang out with drummers. That's very good. This is so like what advice would you give for a young kid? And I think this goes for athletes to like sometimes people don't always encourage it. Right. What was the best advice maybe your parents gave you and what was the best of as you would give to someone trying to cultivate a young talented person will? The drumming is a good start because like most singers, most good singers would tell you that it's about them as the person holding the backbeat down. That's good start. But I would say for musical side of it, just make sure that he listened to everything don't get pigeonholed in, like, you know, if you're like a metal head and you just wanna listen to metal, but you're missing out on so many other different good songs and good types of music, but also the more styles of music you learn in our fluent and the more ability you have to play types of people. You know what I mean? Especially as drummer..

And they're being dragged through the streets, and killed and then killed, again it's just when I was in general the school I remember. The, one, of the biggest? Journalism was to not insert yourself in the story as much as possible And you know over the last, decade we'd gone into punditry taken over I mean these are journalists who, have not not just have opinion their opinion of. The commute and now you have the point where they're they're the first person voice speaking see the White House It's crazy it's not journalism and it's damaging it's truly damaging. Credit for those who are the purveyors of truth and and people like yourself or China really tell the. Real story we're all that's why I appreciate what you have. Over their foreign desk news dot com because you cover stories that aren't being covered with. The NFL, so there was a little, bit of a, blip yesterday in the middle of, all the whatever Trump's down let's all. React on morose latest tape or what have, you but things like that were Turkey is going to free, pastor who's been incarcerated over, there I mean there's so many different dynamics, these international stories or if they're covered, at all are often covered in little round up. Maybe a TV roundup well and international headlines, and then there's this and let's go back to the. Royals not, the Kansas City Royals but the Royal family because that drives ratings but there's a. Lot going on here especially with Turkey and, the whole Islamic extremist issue ISIS, is pretty much dead But it morphs into. Other things that you see Absolutely I think you know the the incorrect. Reaction to all this is about the the baseline I, should say that Americans don't care about why policy but give me three minutes, and I'll tell you how stories are domestic, policy how it really back to America's, national security our, foreign policy, vis-a-vis countries like Turkey like Saudi Arabia like Iran like Syria and what you just looted to the being held interest, is not only in and of itself a story You know we have the, pastor who held in Iran about the major story we don't be go she, with those who are holding American hostage but, the pucks sanctions I have to mention, here that there's, a much, larger story whether it's in Syria or Yemen or in Gaza or here in Turkey is really Iran tricky being o. About Not only pulling out of the Iran nuclear, deal but we applying sanctions onto Iran is retaliating by not returning the pastor, by you, know obviously standing up to the United. States he hasn't been shy about telling Trump that he doesn't agree with the. Anxious he doesn't agree with the positioning of the United States of the Iran and sure enough yesterday a little. Country rather beam of Qatar comes in to save the day and what do they? Do they wanna bail Turkey out of their economic. Crisis, again signing with, Turkey sticking the finger at the eye of the Arab Asian who are opposing Iran and the Shia Sunny divide continues this is a lot of connecting, the dots on stories again that we don't hear about how they connect and, refer right, back to us and our national security. Meanwhile we're creating bowl noble pockets in places like Afghanistan the I play Egypt. Syria obviously in Yemen places where the Slavic state and other groups are able to grow strive and then you. Have the rest of a a ISIS fighter in state of California yesterday so again? It comes back home it these stories that are. Are, truly what we're, going to see them come up to matter to us in our neighborhood another great stories about In texas Texas getting beat death penalty yesterday for honor killings right here in the United States honor killings which are basically you're going, back to in, this case the deep And the, moderate Muslims would say that it's the it's the. Pre need for reform or what have you where you're basically saying the wife has dishonored the family so they it's okay to go, ahead and kill, that person Honor killing which is a straight everyone thought. About Qatar, Qatar as I. Like to call it I've been over there three times that is such a first of, all they have a great airlines the airlines fantastic all these little sheets that the shakes have their different you. Know they're, all competing like my my airplanes bigger than yours Visit Los Angeles. You many many Qatar over the summer Qatar these people. Come, over they. Surely know. How to live a luxurious. Yes they do they do you, don't dates, like airlines I love. That part of it but it's, it's it's, two worlds because in that Little fiefdom there we have a. Base we had at Doha we have a US. Base there aljazeera is located in the same place you talk about playing both. Sides at all times and. They also do this thing is over there one time I think it was in on. A September trip I did not have been two thousand five areas whose early two thousand six they were going through this, it's beyond the sense that we think are censuses nosy now in Qatar what they do they're these big science saying to the to the, locals who get to share the energy revenue over there and, they get I think it's like four hundred. Thousand a year there for doing nothing and but but it's like the the top Salton whoever basically says don't forget that it's time to report all of the information. Including how much you're doing with your money what are you doing with. It and what are, your debts and what your family situation don't. Forget, to give. Us all. The information and we'll keep. The money flowing so it's it's, it's so, weird because we have a base there And it's you you talk about Hospital in. An, awkward spot that's one right well this is this is like the frenemy foreign policy that, we've had to. Toe for awhile Have the same type of relationship with Turkey. "The language used in the tweets by any of these guys, but we've kinda gone from, you know, we used to say all the time that we love to build people up and then tear them down. It kind of feels like now we're not even interested in the building people up thing like we just like the tear down now, and that's all this is. I guess I just wonder this aren't, aren't there enough things in real time to get mad about like things happening now, things like currently happening right now, aren't there enough things happening in the moment to get upset about. Then things that were tweeted, six, seven years ago. Now, look, you may not by the, you know, the whole like, hey, what I sent, you know when I was eighteen is not reflective of the person that I am now. I don't know. I don't know. Sean nukem. I dunno trades her. I don't know, Josh hater. I do know that I'm a different person at forty than I was when I was thirty. I'm certainly a different person at twenty five. And I was when I was seventeen eighteen years old. So I'll certainly allow for the possibility the distinct possibility that these guys have matured and grown up and don't use that kind of language anymore. Understand why you can't use that kind of language. Like I fully allow that possibility, but not to excuse what they did. I just for me, I feel like there's there's enough things happening now like in the moment, there are nothing's that will happen today in sports or otherwise that are really worth devoting a lot of time and energy to that are really worth getting mad about. And instead we're going to spend time and I'm doing it. We're gonna spend time on things that were tweeted by seventeen eighteen year old kids, six, seven years ago. And then I also wonder this. Have you read the tweets that were sent to Jacob Junius who's the pitcher for the Kansas City Royals plunked, Aaron, judge the other night. So on reading some of the tweets that that were sent his way, he told the athlete, people were asking him about tweets, hit Aaron, judge with a fastball and got away from him and broke Aaron judge's risks. He's going to miss three weeks. There were some angry Anki fans on Twitter, telling Judas to quote, drop dead. Another one said, quote, good luck making it out of the Bronx. Judas told the athletic, I got a bunch of them. I wasn't expecting it, but once it started happening, it was like, man, this is crazy, help. People are messaging me. He got death threats. His family got death threats. Now he is quickly taken his Twitter account mated private said one of the reasons why he didn't offer a public apology to judge right away was because he didn't realize that the injury was that's our veer. He went onto a reach out Soham judge is gonna miss three weeks. Now, tell me what's worse. The tweet sent from. Guy, six, seven years ago who seventeen eighteen or the dude who's in his forties or the act of adult who has a job to go to and kids to take care of who decides to break off a tweet to Jacob is that he's going to hurt him or kill him or hurt his family because he hit Aaron judge in baseball game. Something that happens in a baseball game. That to me is a bigger issue that that to me is is a bigger deal because that's happening in real time that's happening right now. And I guess I'm more concerned with what's happening in real time today than than I am tweet sent six, seven years ago. And again, that's not excusing it. And if you wanna make these guys go through diversity training and you wanna shame them if feel like that's what you gotta do like, that's fine. It just it feels like just enjoy shaming people so much that this is the latest mechanism. Let's go back in their past and find out what they tweeted. Nobody's doing that to teach any lesson to kids about Twitter, use the Sola about shaming people. So fine do that. But then at the end of that were left with people in real time tweeting people. I Jay. Jonas that they're going to kill them because they hit a guy in a baseball game with a ninety. Three mile an hour fastball. I just I.

Embarrassing not to have in the index if there's a stock that has been, brutalized unloved dirt cheap and nobody wants said it's embarrassing to have it in the index of course they're gonna take those out now.
