We were up for the fourth day and the S and P. The NASDAQ composite and the Russell 2000 all set records. Today We had the banks and information tech along with industrial names. Leading the advance. Some evidence today on improvement in the American economy to begin with the weekly jobless claims fell last week to the lowest level since the end of November, and we also learned U. S factory orders were up 1.1% in December That was ahead of estimates, and there also is select high frequency data on things like weekly consumer confidence readings in some restaurant booking data. Pointing to strength as well. So we had a little bit of a move up in long term interest rates. Not surprising. 10 Year Treasury last quoted in New York at 1.13%. Now in the equity trade, the Dow and the S and P were each up 1.1% NASDAQ composite up by more than 1.2%. Today, the Russell 2000 rallied By 2%. Welcome back to our TV viewers and radio listeners all over the world were speaking to Kansas City Fed President Esther George, who joins us now for our weekly Bloomberg Equality. Syriza's Along with Daybreak Asia Co anchor Sherry on So President George I want to start with the Jackson Hole symposium The Kansas City holds Fed holds us every year. It's been more than 30 years now. There was a point in the last several years. When you as president of the Kansas City City, Fed decided, you know there's some women here every year, but we need more women. What motivated you at that point So Kathleen. The Jackson Hole program has been a very important program because it focuses on broad issues that affect central banking and monetary policy debates. Ah, globally As you know, when, more than a decade ago, we began to look at the program and Who was presenting who would bring views to these important issues that we were talking about way began to identify the need to address some diversity and again. Diversity of views and the people that are on that program essential. I think to understanding and so we began to look at who are the people that should be on the program that are not Um what women, for example, are in the economics profession that could bring insights to the topics we were discussing. Became a process both for women and people of color to begin to press through some of our usual networks and very qualified and reliable networks to begin to ask others who else should be part of this program, and that was really the impetus. Beginning to think about how we could diversify and bring broader perspectives to that conversation. What was that was the biggest challenge here. You know, there are fewer women, for example, who get PhDs in economics. So that's changing fairly quickly. I think now, um Is it wasn't difficulty to find the women you need, or did you kind of have to start thinking differently, thinking outside the box? Well, it takes a little bit of both. You have to be willing to say, what is it I've expected. Historically, that maybe isn't so important that I could adjust how I think about the requirements for who's on this program. But importantly, I think what helped us make progress was really asking. Women that were in this profession to introduce us to other women take to let us know who else is out there that we should be talking to. And as we did that that network began to grow, and today I think you see on that program. Far more balance in terms of the diversity of people that participate in that program, and I like to think it has also enhanced the quality of what's being discussed to your point. You have been doing this and championing diversity for years now. So what sort of benefits have you seen from bringing more diverse views, whether it's gender or from minorities when it comes to bringing those voices to the table? So I think one of the things you find when you began to expand is diversity can take place. In many instances, people's experiences so the experience of women whether it is their field of study. Whether it is the subject of what they're going to be talking about people of color. They had context that it can add richness to that discussion. It comes from a background of experiences that you might not otherwise get. So I think it has really added a meaningful e to the depth and the breadth of that discussion. When you look at adding these voices, How important is it for you not to on Lee look at the numerical targets of getting these voices but also the substance that these people bring the sort of lens and intellect to actually add more views to the very important issues that could actually move forward equality. That it's a very important issue, so you have to be careful. It's not just a numbers game, but you have to be intentional about what you're looking for. And so there are highly qualified people that sometimes you just haven't met because it takes Being persistent. It takes really reaching out to find people that can be part of this network. And once you do it, as I said, it really adds to I think your ability then to see the numbers those follow when you began to identify the kinds of voices you're looking for what? What's it like?.
