The fate of cash bail in Illinois is now in the hands of the Illinois Supreme Court. Here's Nick Gale. "Sake w G. Last week, Indoor dining restrictions were rolled back to 25% endorsed service and will in Kankakee counties. And in Chicago, Naperville Mayor Steve Torrico joined John to share his thoughts on that. And he finally addressed his niece is critical. Tweet. Hey, Steve, Welcome back. You're on WGN radio. How are you today, Steve? Hello. How are you doing today? Pretty good. I talked to a couple of restaurant owners in a Joliet and Frankfurt New Lenox area earlier this morning, just asking them about what it's like being able to open up in Will county. Kankakee County. Now you're in DuPage County, mostly right? Well, you about a third of our city is in is in Will County as well. So South Naperville is. Well, that's weird. So well, Some of the restaurants in Naperville be able to open up to 25% and some not then. Yeah, they will. They will And you know that I'm happy for the will County restaurant owners. Because last time it was the other way around where DuPage County restaurants were able to stay open and will got shut down and you know a couple of restaurants there right on the border, And so you know, they're looking across the street in a restaurant they could open and they couldn't lose. Yield way It works sometimes, but so happy for our Out paper mill restaurant owners who were able to at this point least start to partially reopen the virus could walk across the street. I mean, what do you make of that? If one guy on one side of the road can open up, should the guy on the other side of the road be able to open up to Steve? You know, I honestly think this whole thing targeting restaurant is misguided. I mean, the data certainly just does not support it. And I've been arguing the whole time that we're focusing in the wrong spot from my perspective. You know, all of the the the infection, and certainly all of the You know the death. Have been on that all predominantly, have been in our seniors 80% or 82% in the Naperville area. And, uh, That's long term care facilities. So you know from my perspective, what's focus on where the you know we're having the most fatalities and try to make a difference, But Um, you know, I don't make those decisions so it is what it is, but I think you're right. Do you have to your question? Uh, you know why across the street? Is that okay? It's not on this side, so How important is the restaurant business to Naperville? When I think in April, I think of a really robust restaurant district. What does that meant to you all? Yeah. Outside of Chicago, Naperville is the number one restaurant destination in the state of Illinois. Pretty impressive, and we know that because my food and beverage, food and beverage numbers that come through that we can compare him to other municipalities. And so it's a It's a really important industry here. It zindzi of jobs. And, um, you know, obviously it zbig part of why people come and visit our community because we have a really great great restaurants. You guys have been then close down since November, right? Yeah. I mean, they've been creative. We've got outdoor igloos and someone put train cars out there for outdoor down that saw that were too. By the way, Steve. I just have to insert this because the people that have the clearing blues I know that that's only you and there but It's zemser to me like it's the It's the same thing, but in a different location, a train cars that kinda close space. That's why you're going into the train car. You know, it's it's crazy. I mean, you know all the things the restaurants are trying to do that. Oh, stay in business, basically right, so it doesn't make sense. But it is. Ah. You know, it's a little bit of a work around, but you know again, it's It's sort of survival mode. We'll have restaurants in Naperville, then sort of ignoring it. And what has your police department been doing about that? You know, I'll tell you we are. We are not well. We are speaking with our Health Department, County health departments better rules. And I have, you know, sport. I speak them every every Monday at 10 o'clock, and, you know, we said, Hey, look at you know, do you need our assistance? And if so, where, on what they had asked for in terms of compliance and enforcement is What they termed super spreader events, and they kind of define that for us as 50 more gathering, no masks. No social distance seems so basically completely ignoring all the rules. Um, they are. They have not requested the assistance on enforcement with restaurant. So I gather that they this point don't feel that it's been a big, big problem to focus resource is towards A heck of a judgment call them for a restaurant owner who knows that he could get away with it. Maybe his neighbor is but he feels an obligation to play by the letter of the law, not just the spirit of the law. So one guy's not making any money and somebody else's maybe making 25 50%. That's just such a weird metric or border situation, isn't it? It isn't too bad we had to put him in this situation as well. And I guess this is always sort of true. You know, when you think about it Restaurants. You know, I suppose always there sort of playing on that. Any business, you know, playing in the gray area little bit, and you know someone somewhere very, very much by the by the book so Well, Do you have any influence? I mean, when do you think the rest of Naperville will be able to open up? Uh, e wish I had that influence. I certainly tried and, uh And I think I got to a point where, uh, the state doesn't want to hear from any more. But You know what we're getting close region. Eight, which is DuPage County and King County. Um, is tracking the right way We are We have screen green signs in two of the three metrics. The third. One is our capacity are hospitals and unfortunately, it's It's a regional capacity. Our local hospital does have capacity in the right amount. Which is about 20%, but regionally we still haven't met that metric. Um and I think soon as we could meet, it is in five days. Five days from today. Yeah. If we continue to track the same direction, I think we could meet in five days. What do you think about that? Do you have any Have a crystal ball on that. Do you think that s O by the 26? Maybe? Well, everything's going the right direction, you know, And I think you know, we certainly It certainly appears that way. Have a good shot at it. Yeah, I hope we make it. A lot of our listeners are saying I call Bs John every restaurant Naperville's open for insight. Dining. Hey, John Williams. What about all the restaurants in Saint Charles? Completely open. They've ignored the quarantine rules. 630. I've seen restaurants in downtown Naperville operating as though nothing was wrong. Another one There has been no enforcement in Naperville. This one says my grandson works in Naperville it of restaurant. They haven't closed it all. I'm not going to say the name. Steve Steve. What do you say to all of those text messages? Mr Mayor? It's true. I mean, the thing is, is that we have a lot of restaurants also that have outdoor dining still. Several of them and we have some. There's sort of hybrid situations. I could feel one that's got outdoor like covered tunnel that they closed up. And, uh you know, they have been.
