They're they're not spring chickens and so but after all over those ten years the problem is they never really like divorced right right and they never clearly defined what the relationship is or isn't it was just kinda like well if we don't talk about it we can just move in whatever direction this is and it doesn't matter it's okay to be separate but we're still together. "Less than sixty seconds like for example. My my wounded scared little survival minded ego anytime. My partner says something that feels remotely threatening to the me. My that little part of me that so terrified i'm going to die is the first one that comes online. The codependent codependent. Part of me is first stage. Codependent part that just doesn't wanna be controlled but also doesn't want to be abandoned kanayama shit show. That's like the worst one right. You're like. Oh my god i feel controlled in. Oh my don't leave me. And i want to control you and it's just it's horrible dance and you think about it. That's also nuts a natural first stage of any humans evolution best babies were born completely codependent on caretakers to to continue showing up for us. Because if they don't were dead we physically be dead and we learn know through the first five east to ten years of our life that okay. I need to be a certain way or this person. It could leave me. And i will i. I don't have to take care of myself literally. Most of us we bring that into our adult relationships because again we have. You don't typically have a lot of our parents were also adolescence in an extended adolescence And so they didn't really give us the tools on how to be healthy functioning emotionally integrated adults so we take that codependence. Indoor adult relationships is why the thought of breaking up with someone like inner twenties or thirties is like oh my god. I can't do this. I'm going to die if they leave me. Or if i leave this death yeah and it is to some degree a sort of death you know as you never gonna see person again so i i don't want to minimize that. It is a death of sorts but the way our nervous systems react to it. It's very childlike in net. I can't let go or i'll die. Y- i can't be be true to myself or i'll die. I can't speak out for what i really want or die And that's for a lot of people. May we maintain that orientation throughout our entire lives now. A lot of our culture. I think leans in the direction of this stage to worth of independence becoming independent doing doing a boundaries work. That's the work of independence. You're really finding out. Who am i. Am i independent of another person. And you know. I remember when i came out of Amari really really difficult relationship before met. Sylvia's a five year relationship and it was extremely codependent. And i remember coming out of that thinking. I had this sort of my battle cry. Was you know no woman will ever again make me responsible for her happiness. And i won't ever again make a woman responsible will from mine. That's the that's the stage to battlecry. You know i'm independent. You're independent you take care of you. I'll take care of me. It's totally understandable evolutionary. Step out of codependence. That doesn't make for really rich relationship. And that's where this third stage work of interdependent worked comes into play. And yeah i mean laura we could do it. Entire could talk for that for hours. We could do a whole episode on nats and but it this three stages model which i write about in in the book I always it helps me check in with. Where am i coming from right now. Am i in this wounded codependent child right now and laura. I go there regularly. I was there last night. Things are saying that like again. That's what i love about you. It's like so many people make it seem that we're supposed to evolve past these things and it's not it's like living with the reality is is human experience but not getting trapped in them right season. Turn knock getting trap. You know learning to stay there for no more than ten fifteen twenty minutes and then and okay. You know having tools and practices to calm myself down to soothe myself because my partner can't soothe me when she's also triggered in that moment is she's in her wounded codependent child's we can't sue each other. Oh my god. I'm so many people come to each other in that state. And that's when you get those banana fights because nobody there's no adult in the room. There's no adult in the room. Yes it's there's no adult in the room is just two kids battling it out and it doesn't go well now so yeah so you know having tools it again in the book i offer so many different tools and practices for okay coming getting bringing the adult back on line so that i i can then show up. You know i've learned for example. Laura learned to you know i. I've apologized in past relationships. But i would always apologize from the child place i would say. I'm sorry because i know. If i don't say i'm sorry mommy's gonna leave me right now now. I've learned to apologize from in that third stage. Play the integrated place of occa- well. I'm sorry not because. I'm afraid you're gonna leave me but i'm sorry because i fucked up and i love him and on there and i'm here i'm back i'm here the adult is here icomfort you. I'm i you know.
