"You see pink muscle. After The Serpent's turn, that is Calder's turn. Calder, you are down in a pit. Okay. How hard will it be for me to get into her mouth? Oh my God, you are. A 140 feet away. Okay. She's 80 feet up near Kali. 60 feet in the ground. What are you saying about my mouth? Forget it. Do I have anything with that? Oh. Okay, so but if I move 20 feet, I could theoretically hit her mouth with a scorching ray. Which we're calling an ice ray. Yes. Yes, yes, yes. You could definitely hit her with a spell. Then I'm gonna do that. I'm gonna climb 20 feet, or move 20 feet towards her mouth. Okay. Cast. Freezing ray. You start climbing up her scales of starfire. You feel your hands burning underneath you, your hold your hand up and begin shooting freezing rays at her mouth. Here's the deal I'll make you Calder. You'll have to roll with disadvantage if you're trying to hit like the inside of her mouth like the roof of her mouth. I guess I'll do that. Sick. It's already a bad gamble. I rolled a three. You accidentally shoot some ice right in front of you and begin sliding down your skills. I scoop up the ice onto my broken ice dagger. What's going on down there? It's all fake. Thank you. Okay, as the last thing I do then, I don't get three shots. So take two more. Yeah. Hell yeah. All right. That's a 26 and a 24. You got it. You hit with that one. So yeah, you shoot as she says, what's going on down there? You shoot a perfectly

"Let's bring in syndicated radio host Hugh Hewitt, Hugh you follow this a lot. This is a big, big deal, and a big get for the U.S. and frankly, for President Biden. Oh, it is. Brad, it's a huge compliment to President Biden for seeing it through. It's also a compliment to the American intelligence community and the military, which never gives up on a target. This is the 6th of 6th that they've gone after. Saddam and Zak Kali was killed under president Bush, the American military got those two in the intelligence community. President Obama, of course, famously getting bin Laden, president Trump going after him getting Al Baghdadi of ISIS and Soleimani of Iran and now Joe Biden the American military and intelligence community getting zawa here. He's always in many respects. The closure that a lot of people have been looking for. He was behind the bombing of the African embassies back in 1998 under president Clinton, and if anyone has read Lawrence writes the looming tower, they'll know. He's a malign. A malignant figure who has had smart is perhaps been Latin was not detail oriented. He was not much of a charismatic leader, but he was relentless and all hats and all honored to the American military, the intelligence committee of President Biden broke in the strike. You know,

"There are these chicanos in Denver and they're incredibly mixed people and their lineage goes all the way back to their indigenous ancestry. And all of the characters in that book represent that. On the morning the flyers appeared across the city like snow and early July, dodie went outside to fetch the newspaper after starting breakfast with Tina. She stepped out of their duplexes screen door with her hair crisp and black curls. The flyers were printed on cheap brittle paper with a photograph of the girl, borrowed from the 1955 north Denver high school yearbook, sitting dead center on the page. Missing, Lucia Pereira, 19 year old girl of Filipino descent dodi's chest ached with hard and sadness. She lifted her gaze, eyeing the quiet street, almost hoping the missing girl would suddenly appear beside a mailbox or a parked automobile. This was on our tree, dodie said in Spanish, setting the flyer on the table and taking a seat. Tina gave it a glance, she shrugged, Lucia was very beautiful, with strong precise eyes, and doughty felt an urge to know her. Dodie said to Tina, I know you've seen her at church. What could have happened to her? Maybe she's dead, Tina gulp to glass of orange juice. Someone could have chopped her right up. Don't say something so ugly, that's horrible. Fine. She probably had a boyfriend, Tina suggested her voice strained with annoyance. I bet they ran off and wanted to get married in a hurry. I don't think so, said dodie. She didn't seem interested in that. I.

"The oral history and I took the tape with me and I was living far away from Denver at the time. It's about a 6 hour drive through the mountains. Every time I would leave, I would remember my mom saying, now we're entering the kingdom of the mountains. And so I drove all the way down to Durango and I had the tape and I had to go to the library to find a way to play it. And I plugged it into this VHS tape and I was sitting there with headphones and I was watching it and the first thing that really struck me was just to see my great grandma again. I mean, I haven't seen her since. I was a little girl and she died, but also since she's visited me and dreams. And there was one more thing that just really blew me away. My family now, we besides the few siblings of mine that have been able to reclaim Spanish and learn Spanish fluently. We are monolingual English speakers because of the abuse of the past. And my family talks about people being beaten school for speaking Spanish for being attacked on the streets for speaking Spanish. And my mother asked her in the tape, she says, what languages did you speak at home? And my grandmother looks at her and she says, well, we spoke Spanish, of course. And my mom says, okay, did you speak anything else? And my grandma says, well, yeah, of course. We spoke our old languages too. We did not just speak Spanish. And that, to me, it just felt like such loss. I had no idea, I mean, she was referencing their indigenous languages. It was incredible to me to realize that my family had lost so many languages and so quickly. It happened really in one generation..

"From the 1930s and I was just, you know, I drew a blank and I said, no, I just thought I knew it. And so that sort of felt like a challenge to me. And at that point, I was set off on this very hungry search for research. And that is how I ended up visiting archives and libraries, a really across the Southwest region. I remember a particular day I went to the Denver public library, western history and genealogy floor, which is one of the largest archives in the western United States. And I walked up to the reference desk and I asked the archivist there, I said, I want to know how my Filipino great grandfather met my chicana great grandmother and I don't have anywhere to start. And he sort of just looked at me blankly, but then we started writing down certain notes and references. And that's when I really started to look at the newspapers at the clips. But there was one big issue. Are people were not really in the archives than the way that anglos were in the archives. And I got really lucky that year because I also found a VHS tape. My mother had conducted an oral history with my great grandmother. And I found this tape and I transcribed it. Did she tell you guys that anything about what had happened or why he would know nothing? I remember distinctively when I found the tape, I found the VHS tape in my mother's closet. She is the one who conducted the oral history and I took the tape with me and I was living far away from Denver at the time. It's about a 6 hour drive through the mountains. "Wasn't easy. You know, sometimes when I look back through my old emails, it makes me feel so sad to just see the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of rejections. I was told that nobody would want stories like this. Sabrina and Karina became a finalist for the national book award in 2019. Nobody was really talking about that book when it first came out, but the people were, my community was. And my community really carried that book and pushed it up and out into the national sphere. And now Kali, who is 35 years old, has just released her debut novel, woman of light. In this episode, Kali talks about how her life experiences and identity. Blend into her work. And how she's honoring her ancestors from the American southwest. Here's Kali fajardo and Stein in her own words. My family, my ancestors, you know, we've been in Denver now for over a hundred years and we still run in to prejudice and to people saying, this isn't your place. This isn't your city. This isn't where you belong. And so women of light is really my attempt to show the world that we exist and not only do we exist, we have really big entertaining, dramatic stories, and I hope I'm providing that space for others who may be come from these ancestries that are.

"And so you just add the web authent module and configure it and you're probably good to go. Yeah. Right. Well, that day I hope comes soon. It'll be interesting to see. It's not and this is the problem is there was a benefit to Google and Facebook doing the log in with Google login with Facebook. Because as we know, they track you as you pass by, they know who you are and where you're logging in. So this Federated OAuth login, they had a benefit. They had a reason for doing it. It's not clear to me what the benefit will be to web servers and websites adding pass keys. Things are working the way they are now. So we'll see. Yeah. Yeah. And as I said, not everybody is doing the log on with Google and Facebook. You certainly can't use it universally. You see it here and there. And it's kind of like being able to buy something with PayPal. It's like, good. I could use that here. But other places, you need my credit card number. WordPress does have a squirrel plugin. Did that get a lot of uptake? Yeah. It did. Yeah. Yeah. I think that's got to be key. You've got to have those easy. Yes. It's got to be a drop in solution. So last Wednesday, a company known as offensive security that who are the people behind Cali Linux announced that they'd be live streaming their penetration testing with Kali Linux course sessions on Twitch later this month. I mentioned this because a subset of the course's material, all of the streamed content will be open to the public on Twitch at no charge. And I felt sure that some of our listeners would find that interesting. For those who don't know, Kali Linux is a debian based Linux distro, which is targeted toward facilitating information security tasks such as penetration testing, security research, computer forensics and reverse engineering. The course in question ten 200 is a paid course, which helps students prepare for the offensive security certified professional, O SCP certification exam. Before the pandemic, it was only available in person. But during the COVID response, live training was suspended and offensive security moved their courseware online for remote instruction. So today, a 26 part 13 week twice weekly,.

I'll say, yeah, there is this little arcane motorbike that he has that it will travel so slow with all three of you on it. It's like a hover thing, essentially. It doesn't have wheels. It's got like handlebars and it's got certain things that cast spells to make it accelerate and stuff like that. There's just the one seat on it. And then it's got like a purple glow of like a levitate spell. And it can go usually pretty fast, but as soon as Calder gets on it, you feel it like almost hit the ground and then as Kali gets onto the back, it fully starts scratching on the ground. He's making sparks. I think Callie should drive. And then Saul is on top and it's just fully like ruining the road as you guys ride along. All there, you need to push off the ground like it's one of those toddler bikes without pedals. Okay, you know what? Kelly, you wear the handler helm. Our soul. We just need to shift the weight around. Okay. Yeah, we fully commit to the scooter and we go to this address. Sweet. "Was there a particular market opportunity that you saw something that you felt wasn't being done at the bigger companies. No not yet. That's not really worried happened at the time when especially so i had moved on from helmets and eventually became the head of engineering specialized for everything for bikes. Mostly what i concentrated on was the carbide projects. They i worked on the tarmac in robea and things like that other guys who had much better frame experience than i do. You know the geometry. So i would go over to the factories and work with the carbon lay ups and things like that and we would make it and break it. I still have tarmac. frame number. two doesn't look anything like what went to production. It had split talk to who knew that was uci illegal but so my people see it all the time. It doesn't say anything on it so it's got carbon top tube and changed in the seeks to and and then the underbody aluminum so the idea was it was gonna be nice. Chris feel the aluminum. But where your body touches. You're gonna have that forgiving carbon-fiber conceptually feel and so. I still have that bike when people see me out on it. I'm not a big rodeo ride. A lot on the road. But they're like what the hell is that because it's totally recognizable but it's pretty cool so actually less specialized primarily because they were going through some transitions at the time they had wanted. Transfer a lot of the engineering to taiwan. And i wasn't interested in that job. I had my first kid. I didn't want to travel. Did not want to travel at all. And so i actually resigned from the position. There was a great experience. It took me nine months to leave. Because i didn't have another job. I hired my replacement. I finished those two bikes and then just started consulting a little bit so i consulted a little bit with beta worked on their first carbon bars with jared smith..

That i loved so definitely played a huge influence on the artists. I am today. The beginning of breaking into the industry was definitely just. When i've got my first laptop. I wanted to make documentaries in colombian i wanted to make art films and i always love making music and writing as well so i wanted to make music that accompanied there so i guess that was how i started the journey of like putting together my first little mix tape i maybe songs really quickly and i just put it out on like a website called opinion at the time and i put out these little videos that had been making it started just getting a lot of shares between people who had been around much longer than me making music mish longer than me and were very established in the industry so it was kind of embarrassing for me actually. After i realized that so many people were sharing it. I took it down off the internet. I couldn't have been eighteen because i graduated early. And i think it was my graduation year. I might have even been like seventeen going on eighteen at the time. I just was like if something that i literally made. Just messing around could get so much attention. "Right he goes out the press and says something has viewpoint has a you know and everybody feels that. Would networks for microsoft. They know that they're part of representing that for you. The athletes are part of that. A major part of that voice and when they go out and speak reestablished part of the culture and they established what you stand for and they establish what meaning is and all those who are things right so it's important to let that happen in a real sense and to be able to let them tell their stories to let them give behind the scenes. Look of what they do and to make everyone feel connected to them as humans are not something on a lofty perch. They're right there part of it. So true goner those trophy. Athletes were athletes. That you have a story. Share it and comfortable sharing that. It wasn't easy to get here. These are the obstacles. This is what i'm proud of. You know had a tough game like that. Authentic voice is what we're valuing As fans now more than ever and the club has to help deliver that when we talk about pivoting and make it happen. We couldn't talk to fans in the stands anymore. So now you've got to talk to them in their homes with everything else going on in the world. So i completely agree with you. It's fun to watch and it will. It will change. I keep up on the storytelling sides. Now now i'm getting. I'm getting all excited like you are talking about all this stuff. So let's get deeper into the staffing side a little bit. Because i know that's what a lot of people in our audience really really want to know more about from a tactical strategic standpoint. Obviously you play a major role in creating the people strategy at nyc afc. Is there a common denominator that you look for employees at nyc afc. I know we're talking about removing barriers in not having people to segmented and we're opening things up but are there certain traits that you're looking for and like are there certain must have attributes. And how do you find and identify those people that are going to be complementary to who you are as an organization. Those are some really great questions and should help. The audience navigate the sporting industry. In general we talked about it at the beginning. Being passionate is a characteristic that cannot be created so it's something that we look for. Now mind you. Everyone's not going to be passionate in how they communicate. Everyone's not going to be passionate. You know necessarily for soccer but what we're looking for. Is that burning in the belly. What what is it in your life that you were passionate about. It could be family. it'd be cooking. It could be animals. It could be culturally but when you are in an interview setting it's important for you to show up as a person a lot of times Injury level roles when we're doing applications interviews for those entry positions people. Show up trying to be what we want them to be what they think we want them to be. And it comes across as robotic in authentic. So would i encourage each person considering not just in. The sporting world is identify who you are. What makes you different from your friends. What makes you different from your siblings and own in possess and think about how that can make organization a department or t. Maybe you haven't worked in the professional environment for very long but if you put me on a team this what i can bring to that t..

And you and I talked about just how utterly absurd this was. You gave us the whole background on why they were even named the rebels to begin with. And it was all on the up and APPA had nothing to do with racism or slavery or confederacy or the South or anything right? It was named after the pope. Who by Ron Kali, who was deemed a rebel because of his actions for good as it related to the church. Yes, and so why they've decided they need to change that. Is totally just woke. Virtue signaling bullcrap on Gui got some reactions to that we've got, I think quite a handful of voicemails in reaction. Some people learned about it while we were talking about it, not even from Ron Kali itself, and that was frustrating. Let's go ahead and start playing him. Hey, Mark and Rob Rob first hard when I say everything you ever say about Eric Holcomb is absolutely 1000% accurate. What? You asked about my opinions on the run. The Power Of Poetry

"So blake auden welcome. Schmancy the ios. Thank you so much for coming on. Thank you very much for having me poetry. I'm very excited to talking poetry. I feel like. I haven't been waiting enough poetry but anyway tennis about yours and when you started rising yeah absolutely. I started writing when i was quite young. Mark mark fathers in the military. And so i grew up with wolf poetry and i i just became fascinated by it by its ability to convey so really strong and deep emotions. And so i've been reading in on doubling for twenty two years and by then even really taking it seriously for about two years. I sat my instagram account february. Twenty nineteen ammon dots. When i saw really started trying to make him a career. What kind of reaction have you had on instagram. And in general in the wo t o poetry. It's been Sa- brady surprising. If i'm going to start you know. I suppose you never you stop these things in the The other people will enjoy them and monette may view get. Some read was awesome. Nice comments. But i i've been completely blown away by by how people have responded to it. People say to me with the time that my poetry helps them to process emotions and mental health issues heartbreaking loss and not every time i hear it it means you actually well to me. I think i've been very lucky in that. Regard does depends in the first place to help you with that mental health. Stuff will just generally kind of the going on at the moment. Yeah i think it does. I mean visit certain certainly kasichs about about writing. I think it's about so of all forces you to organize your emotions and kind of give them a gram to to stand on and on. I think that about price s helps you come to terms with what you might be experiencing the state of the world with the mainland or whatever it might be and that's the real payoff. It's is seeing other people react to it and particularly people fail like a con thy kalis how feeding or they struggled to talk about it and would just you know they put it into words. They often tell me that. I'm doing that for them. And for me back only makes make like whatever i go through. It's worth it. Because i know i'll be out of tune into something that helps someone else. Can we talk about your own experiences of mental health. Because i know that you've spoken a bit about your experience of anxiety. Windy anxiety can stopped fear. In what what does that mean fee. So i have been anxious to some degree harming mike my life when i was a kid i remember i and i think a lot of this comes from having a dot in the military and to worry incessantly. If you know if my mum was late from to pick me up from the childminders from school. I would immediately stop in. Kenosha must have been in a car crash or something awful happened. And i remember at a young age On the other night. Seven or eight. And when i was in bed if i if i heard the front door i would assume that must be my my parents leaving to run away or something. Say i've always had know. Not kind of always worried. Probably unnecessarily more than an average kid should they and bet ahsan ads and probably in the last. Ten years is gotten progressively worse. And to the point where. I get anxious about we'll seemingly nothing you know. I caught composting. Garon on what is the might be causing it so it's been something i've struggled with for a long time now. So what if you saw this helps and dealing with so i mean writing is certainly one of them off in general. I'm a musician. As while i have a degree in music so i always turn to to the to try and make sense of this stuff that otherwise. I've tried everything. I've been to therapy. Which didn't help necessarily in lessening not. But it did help me understand the recall of it and i'm wear these things might have come from which was i mean. It was fascinating if nothing else am. I meditate every day dot starts really helpful and breathing exercises or this kind of stuff but i think the me the radi bake change came so i noticed probably two years ago you the anxiety was slowly taking lots of things away from eisai stopped performing music. I socialize less and less and i didn't. I hadn't been on holiday a about fifteen years at that point and i was i was essentially just spending everyday in the house too too scared of a panic attack to go and do anything. I found that the anxiety. Just find new things to make you anxious about if you if you remove or the sunny mike experience. He probably removed the trigger. It would just got replaced by something else so suddenly watching films with make anxious whereas it didn't before and so i saw you know what it's going to make me on kisses anyway then as just do i want so i started. I started writing about it. And i- i characterize anxieties wolf in my writing something that you know stokes me so i got tattooed quite large on the back of my left hung where i can see every day and not kind of reminds me the you know what enough is enough. I'm just gonna do the things and if the makes me anxious he makes me unctuous fiber panic attack panic attack very they can do about it so i'm just gonna down and live my life and oddly enough thought has really helped. The last two years have been much better.

Soccer star Carli Lloyd received offers to kick in NFL preseason games

"It's been confirmed by Carli Lloyd of the U. S. women's national team that she is quote seriously considering on offer from the NFL now it's gotten old it's gotten a little fuzzy what can offer a we talking about is it an offer to simply come in and kick on Thursday night in the final preseason game for a team that's possible that's how I originally read at this time they were a little bit more Corey in terms of what the offer actually is and what Carly is thanking and the reason for this if you missed it about a week maybe a little bit more ago a viral video surfaced of Carly at eagles camp kicking a fifty five yard field goal and by the way kicking it threw up rights that are squeezed together even fitter than actual goal posts in the NFL fifty five yards no joke now granted no rush no snap no timing look like maybe her her run up to the ball was a little bit longer than what an actual kicker would do but you know fifty five yards that is not a joke and this thing did not just barely clear the cross bar it was with ease and it was perfectly centered and Carly's time with the U. S. women's national team probably doesn't have a whole lot of laughs because she's in her mid thirties courses a kicker what the hell you could just get started at that time now is this ever going to turn into Kali kicking in real NFL games I find that to be a little bit far fetched but who the heck knows and quite frankly who the heck cares this is fantastic it's fantastic it should happen don't get caught in the debate and the minutia of whether or not it would work it doesn't matter that's not the point the point is out all times and everyone in all leagues can do it better all times they should be thinking in twenty nineteen about entertaining the masses that's the thing you know we look at baseball games and we go and we need to restart the game no you don't need to shorten the game you need the game to be more entertaining there need to be more things going on that that that that keep the attention of the audience and even the NFL which is incredibly entertaining there's urgency already built in only sixteen games I'm number one television show across the board throughout every football season by far our basketball very entertaining but are there ways other ways that they could make it even more entertaining while the big the big sore thumb for the NFL is the pre season it is incredibly difficult to find reasons to watch a preseason game out one I've watched so far one one time did I actually sit down on the couch with a pillow behind my head make food and say let's get it on I'm watching this happened one time and in fact is the only time I can remember it happening in the last I don't know how many years and it was last Saturday because Jimmy Garamba fear was was running through the streets of San Francisco and seemingly beyond and so we had to see it he was gonna play all high off he gets some continuity he could make a mistake or two and have time to to button it up he did all of those things and I was there for and then half time came and I wasn't there for it anymore and do you know how much I will watch of Thursday night narodna nothing I promise absolutely nothing I will I watch all that game on Thursday night because the relevant it's relevent the stars won't be there it's just not watchable however if Carli Lloyd were kicking for one of those teams I watched the whole thing I'll I would watch the whole thing and I would be rooting every time offer every drive just all of the twenty five yard line so why not who gets hurt how many teams already know who their kicker is gosh I hope the forty Niners of the team making the offer Robbie gold your quarterback don't put him out there on Thursday why who knows somebody could roll into his leg get Carli Lloyd M. and letter kick and who knows what would happen next but when you want to see it are so this is taking the next step there is serious consideration going on and and who knows where this is going to go on Thursday or quite frankly beyond it would be

This episode has the most planet money staffers onscreen if you can't watch right now, we've got all our usual. Audio episodes waiting for you to skip back a little bit. Okay. Enjoy the video. This is where the story of the magnetic stripe and the chip on your credit card begins. Airport in the nineteen sixty back. Then you want to pay with a credit card walk up to a ticket counter over your credit card and the airline calls up the Bank to make sure it all checks out. It's all done manually. But as the lines grew the time it took to get on the plane grew to. To the airlines went to IBM International Business Machines big deal back then and they said, this is the problem can you make a card that works faster. So IBM tried a few different ways to make a car in a machine that could talk to each other. Finally, they said, yes, here take this piece of magnetic audiotape and stick it on the card like this. And the tape had all of the important information that you'd normally have in that phone conversation a credit card machine could read that tape send it over the phone lines. And the Bank would get the information almost instinct, so instead of sounding like this. I'm going to check on. I'm calling to check on. It sounded like this. But not in France. France ended up with tons of credit card fraud because the phone lines there. Well, they kind of sucked I can't hear what you've anything. So sometimes those swipes just wouldn't go through to the Bank and the way French stores dealt with it was to stockpile their credit card transactions and then make one big call at the end of the day, if you were a French criminal. This was a bonanza. You could get up in the morning. Make a fake card show up at the store, I something. And by the time, they call the check your credit, you're halfway to your mansion in Marseilles. But unfortunately for all those nefarious fraudsters. There was a colorful man named Roland more. When you just how to solve this. Who's kind of a hippy, according to one Kali a freelance journalist a comedian. What is the deal with credit cards? And an inventor, and he had all these engineer friends who tell him, you know, France has a ridiculous inordinate amount of credit card fraud. Aren't you do something about? So our hippie inventor came up with a solution. He knew all about computers. So he said why not put a computer chip car that chip could generate a unique code every time you using. In fact, we don't even need to use cards. We can put the chip in this giant ring. But during didn't really catch on the chip was a good idea though, because it meant that the machine could firm that you are using a real card offline and as fraud got worse and worse it started to become harder for the banks to ignore the ship. Finally, French companies adopted it with a pin code system instead of a signature, so it was even more secure and it worked it was so successful that the chip began to spread all across Europe credit cards were finally super secure, but in the US, we were still using the magnetic stripe.
