"Schlereth and Evans yeah, man, definitely frustrating. No, you know, to feel like we could have won that game and just, you know, some, you know, we had some good moments. We had some, that's a good moment. We were battling, you know, obviously to see Billy go down. That wasn't. That wasn't easy on us, and then, and then, you know, Glasgow going down, you know, the judge stepped in. You know, his first time being in there, I thought, he battled, you know, tried to do everything he could. You know, and same thing with Quinn over on the right side. Russell Wilson, after a day in which he went 21 of 42, 50%. Way, way below average. 286 yards, one touchdown one sort of throw it up see what happens interception at the end. Sacked 6 times. Market is now 7 straight games for Russell Wilson that he has been sacked three or more times. So, another pitiful performance by the offense is this on Nathaniel Hackett, is it on Russell Wilson? Order he just blamed the injuries. Pick one. I'm going to push it in the majority of the blame over to Russell Wilson. Why? Why because he. All they see is hold the bot told you, man. There's 30% of plus of the sacks that have been given up over the years of his career, at least that is on Russell, and I'll be really interested to dig into coaches tape and see how many of those 6 sacks I believe in those 18 hits. Or his. Yeah. I guarantee you there's a majority of half the sacks have to hits. Probably, again, I haven't dug through it, but I will. I will, when my coach is taped downloads, I'll go look at every pass play. And see exactly what, are you passing guys by? I know this. I know a bunch of those sacks when he's escaping out the back of the pocket. Like that is, that's. That is teaching rookies. There's nothing good going to happen out there. Like nothing good happens in the deep end of the pool. Stay in the shallow end. Well, we have tell us Tuesday to coming up to tomorrow and you can draw up and describe some of these things that you see on film. Next on the morning brew. We were doing some good things in that first half again, and third down, continually gets us. We got to be sure that we got to keep mixing it up as much as we can. We had to throw some guys in there and I loved watching them battle. Jalen Virgil came up big for us on an audible that Russ had, which was great to see, but we got to do a great job protecting Russ and we got to find a way to run the ball. Coach, love you, but this isn't going to end well. This is not going to end well. And quite honestly, you've got the three and 6 Broncos, you got the two and 7 raiders this Sunday. You got the beleaguered Nathaniel Aggie you got the beleaguered Josh McDaniels. I don't think it's a stretch at all to say that whoever loses this game coach might get fired. Yeah, that's right out of the office space. You no longer work here game. Yeah. Right? Yeah. We're going to need you to move down under the stairwell. We find it best to fire somebody on a Friday. We fight it best to fire somebody on a Sunday. As they're walking off the field. That would be great. Yeah. I'll be I'll be fascinated to see what the crowds like on. Just add to your cost side. We'll pack up your stuff. Get you your clothes. See you later. Somebody just standing on the field with car keys. There you go. There's your car keys. We got it out of your locker. What does expediting the process? What's your lockers now in a box? And a trash bag. Oh, next on the morning brew. To bounce back and to never trail on a game, to get up by as many as 20 8 points. And to get contributions from so many people and to finish up a road trip three in one. That's a hell of a road trip for us. And we only gave up a 103 points did a great job defending the three. I was really proud of our guys tonight to find a way to gut this one out and to do it playing our brand of basketball. Michael Malone's team bouncing back from a no show performance on Friday in Boston. They bounced back last night in Chicago, wired a wire one 26 one O three win over the Chicago Bulls on a game in a game in which Nikola Jokić, right for this? Yes. Play 28 minutes took four shots. Made them all. He was four or four shooting, no three point attempts, no free throw attempts. He had 14 assists is that there's just, you know, Michael Michael Porter junior was on. He had 31. Jamal Murray. Continues to play well. Boy, whatever. Can't wait to have James Merrill Adam coming up in here in a couple minutes because he was like, they're going to take a really slow with Jamal Murray and you know we're going to have to wait excuses for Jamal until January. Jamal's playing great right now. Yeah. And so is MPJ. While he was a no show on Friday, but he bounced back. Everybody was in no show out Friday. Here's one thing I love about what Michael Malone just said. And some I've said forever about NFL football. And but the Broncos in general. Because you can't tell me what their identity is. But when he keeps preaching, I like the fact that we played to our identity. If we win a basketball game playing the way I want my guys to play, playing the way I want our identity of this will of this basketball excuse me. Team, what it needs to be. And I'm a, you know me, man. I'm a big believer. I'm a big believer in that. Now keep your Nathaniel hag said, hey, we got to find a way to run the ball better. That does nothing for me. When I find a way, we're going to run the ball better. You know why? Because we're going to run the ball. I mean, and that's one of those things where you have to change your mindset about it. You got to change everything about you and you've got to adhere to it and just say, this is what we're doing. Next on the morning room. Switch you need when you have injuries, especially, but they've been impressive. I mean, they've been really consistent in what they do. Just shows you they got a deep desire to win. You know, and they put a lot of pressure on themselves to give a job done. They would get it done on a nightly basis. There are a lot of differences between the avalanche and Broncos. Not exactly breaking news here, okay? But here's one of the big differences. The Broncos have a bunch of injuries, and they become an excuse. The avalanche have a bunch of injuries. And all that they do to respond is have their best players just absolutely ball out. Right now, what they're getting from Mika red and Nathan McKinnon and kale mccart, their stars, their studs. Guess what they're doing? They are shouldering and carrying the load and carrying it magnificently as the abs were won four in a row. Then that go to show you though when, I mean, it's not lip service. You know, it's not catch phrases. It's not, there's not, they just go out there and grind. You know, I mean, after every victory, you hear Nathan McKinnon say, let's ride. Let's skate. I don't know why they're just made me personal love, right? It's because that would be really, really, really out of character. Yeah. Oh, that's funny. That'll do it for the morning bro, bring that to each and

"I like the construction of the team last year. It's a little bit different this year. They've changed their starting goaltender. That doesn't happen very often for a first day on the Cup championship. They've lost a real important catalyst in basil cadre, who was a key contributor as the number two center. So taking Darcy Kemper the star egoli and cadre out of the mix has, I believe, weakened them, but it hasn't made them weak. And that's an important distinction. They are still, I think the top team in the Western Conference. But I would suggest that the gap between Colorado and everybody coming up behind isn't as great as it was, maybe four to 6 months ago. Last season, we saw kale win both the Norris trophy as the NHL's best defenseman and the Khan smythe trophy as the playoffs MVP. And he was so good last year that no less an expert than Wayne Gretzky said he's the best two way defenseman we've seen in at least a generation. I would say probably the closest player we've ever seen that offensively and defensively we can make an impact of a game that much, probably Bobby Orr. We got to go back to Eric, what in your opinion does make kale macar so special and is it possible for the guy to somehow get even better? Well, first of all, the latter part is a great question because he is still so young and he has taken such great strides that yeah, I don't believe he's reached his ceiling. Yeah. And I do have as you referenced at the start. Of our interview, a fairly long perspective on the game. And I've seen Paul Coffey come along. He was a special special player. Al macinnis was a special player. Scott niedermayer makar has elements of all of their games. The skating ability of a need or the ability to shoot the way Al McKinnon did. And as a kid, I watched Bobby or play a lot. And I do think that there's an awful lot about the way Bobby horde dominated the game and the way the K on the car could take control of the game. There's a lot of parallels there. And people have made the comparisons in the past to this person is the next Bobby or and it has never proven to be true. But in the case of kale mccart, if he stays healthy, it might be true. Well, speaking of absolutely incredible players, Connor McDavid has started off this new season by scoring a hat trick and picking up an assist in his very first game. And there you have it a hat trick. For the oilers captain. You know, last season, Eric, the oilers overcame a pretty big hurdle by going deep in the playoffs for the first time in McDavid's career. Does this seem have what it takes to go even deeper this season? I think so. Yeah. Because I think the one thing that they have done, not just this summer, but over the course of the last 8 to 12 months is that they have filled in some of the gaps around Connor McDavid and Lee and dry cycles. So for a long time, they had arguably the two best players in the world. And yet we're getting anything done because the goaltending was just so. So the defense really dropped off after about two or three players. And there was no secondary scoring to speak up. Even in a game like hockey, where you can have somebody like me, David and draisaitl, that are so dominant when they're on the ice. They play 22, 23 minutes a night and it's a 60 minute game. And so, you know, you look at picking up event or Kane mid season last year. If you look at getting Zach Hyman at the start of the year before, you look at the progression that some of their younger forwards like Tyler Yamamoto have made. Ryan nugent Hopkins is still a viable third piece up front. So their forwards are just flat out better. And then Evan Bouchard is a young defenseman that over the course of 12 months has settled in as a very solid top four option and you've got someone like nurse there and then they went out and they hope they got their goaltending solution in Jack Campbell and that will really be the key because if Campbell can bring a consistent level of goaltending to an Edmonton team that has the ability in the capacity to outscore other teams, then yeah, they have a puncher shot at winning a championship when you have players that dominated in the last lane McDavid and draisaitl did last year. When you think about the numbers that they put up in the amount of games that they play, it was phenomenal. So yes, they are a viable threat to Colorado for sure. Conor McDavid was edged out for the Hart trophy last season by Maple Leafs center auston Matthews, who scores an incredible 60 goals in 70 three games. Do you figure that was sort of a one off? And should we expect McDavid to regain the MVP crown this season and win his third heart trophy? Well, yes, I do. We had to make predictions and Conor McDavid is going to be my default MVP for the next 8 to ten years. When I started Wayne Gretzky won the MVP and 8 years in a row and I think 9 years out of ten and he was so dumb and we would win scoring races by 70 points sometimes. And when you got your ballot in the mail in those days, you'd fill out Wayne Gretzky first and then you'd figure, okay, who's next and then like will you there's ball coffee? So I think McDavid is that good. And I do think that he is the favorite. But I also think that when I look at the way Austin Matthews plays, I look at his size, his ability to shoot the pot that his ability to find those seeds, I just think Matthews is going to be the next palette so that again, I think he's sturdy. I think he's capable of 60 plus goals every year. And I think that can stay relatively healthy and has the desire to play a long time. We will be talking about him as someone that could potentially score goals at that way in grad school. So that you can level. He could be one of the all time great goal scorers. Okay, moving on in the Western Conference here, one of the most memorable series in all of last season was the so called battle of Alberta, the oilers against the Calgary flames. Those games were absolutely wild and incredibly high scoring. It felt like a throwback to hockey from the 1980s or something. The recovery flames then had a very interesting off season. Eric, can you just sort of walk us through some of their off season drama and where they ultimately landed? So they win the Pacific division. And on the opening day of free agency, Johnny gaudreau, who was tied for number two in the NHL scoring the notified them that he was going to test the market. And I think right up until the 11th hour, they thought that the drug was going to re sign in calorie. I want to wish John, his family, all the very, very best. He gave us 8 great years here. They wonderful years and a lot of memories. And I can tell you it's difficult right now. It's difficult. So that really caught them by surprise. And I think there was a period of time where they were really weren't sure what to do next and then what compounded the situation was that the drones line made Matthew kuchak who was 8th in the NHL scoring last year. He had a year left on his contract that he notified them that he too planned to leave Calgary as a free agent. American born players not staying in Canada. It's becoming a bit of a trend here in both these players are American born. And that at the end of the day, unfortunately, is out of the team's control. This was considered by many people along with the lives lent him to be the best line in hockey. So that you can imagine that the fan base in the city was completely torn by this. I think that pretty much obliterates our first line. I'm heartbroken. Matthew, stay with us, please. But what ended up happening was that the flames made a very astute trade, I believe, with Florida. Matthew could chuck any conditional fourth round pick were sent to the Florida Panthers in a trade which was a happy surprise to flames fans. Jonathan Uber dog who was tied with the drove for second in the league in scoring, and also a defenseman Mackenzie Uighur who immediately becomes one of the top two or three defense was in Calgary. And then with the capped space that they had allocated to good drove, they turned and spent that money on cadre. Former Colorado avalanche and Stanley cup champion nazem kadri has agreed to a 7 year contract with the flames that deal will pay him $49 million over 7

"One. Well, the banner went up and then after that, the avalanche dominated skating past the Blackhawks 5 to two at ball arena last night, opening night and the stars were out. Our Tori lechon and two goals, valerian two goals, Miko ranton and four assists, kale mccart, Nathan McKinnon, two assists apiece. Soderbergh did not play. Come on. What? What? Did he get a ring? Wow, what are you talking about? My favorite player. Great night. It was a great night, man. Hoist the banner. Do you hoist the banner? I think you're hoist one. You hoist the banner. Yeah, sure. You don't lift the banner. You'll hoist the sails, hoist, oyster is a good word. Hoist is a great word. Voice. Try to use that in the broad deal. Why don't you? East did the ball of after a slow start the avalanche got rolling and Chicago, silly Chicago, taking dumb penalties in the avalanche made them pay before you don't want to get you don't want to get on the wrong end of the power plant. Seriously. Right? They make it look so easy. And how about mikko ranting it? Or assists last night. Oh boy. Which I think would put him on pace to have somewhere over 320 assists this year. That would be a league record. I always like that when that first game when somebody put hits two home runs or it leaves everybody. Why is guys like me in the media? You say, you know, he's on pace now to hit a 120 home runs. Well, they hit two, and you got one 61 games. You're gonna play a 150, 50, that's 300. That would be a record I would be. Avalanche with or count them four power play goals they play in Calgary tonight. Added gorky park look. Again, nazem kadri, Georgia have had a really easy night. You only had the only face 17 shots. And complete domination, complete domination. Next on the morning bro well, I thought it was great. Yeah, it's same as the ring ceremony. I mean, either like to have the whole team here from last year, obviously that's not possible, but C Jack, he's such a great teammate, great guy everyone loved him and you know, he's moved on, but it's nice to have those guys part of it, you know, they'll be linked together forever, so it's good to get as many guys see Ken with the ceremony was great. I thought it was very well done. Great. Give me better and bigger words than great. They nailed it. Congratulations to the avalanche. You put on a terrific banner ceremony, everything was perfect. From Mark hoppus from blink one 82 coming out and leading the crowd in a, all the small things sing along to the whole team getting introduced, Gabe land a stock who's out for at least a couple of months to start the season doesn't matter was in full uniform helmet on risk tape. He skated out, carried the cup around, which was cool, remember, because the avalanche clinched in Tampa. So this was the first chance to see the crowd see the cup skated around in front of him, which was really cool. So everything was awesome. It was a great. Great. I used the word great. Gotta come up with a better word. Stupendous. Stupendous. It was emotional. It was emotional. I'll admit. You got a lot of things. I'm man enough to admit that some of my awesomeness leaked out. It is miraculous. It was when it was when Jack Johnson skated over and joined him. And so you have all the guys in their avalanche sweaters, and here's this one guy at a Blackhawks sweater. It doesn't matter. They should not let him in. Yes, they should. Says Jack away. Be gone. Be gone, you're no longer part of the group. That is the whole thing is cool. The whole thing was great. And they have done. They've done an amazing. They really have done an amazing job with this, and now it's time to let it go. See, this is you got to let it go. As a place. This is you. This is the guy who admitted that when you were part of banner ceremonies, you didn't even enjoy it. You were too worried and too nervous about the game you're getting ready to play. Let it go man. Sounded let it go. No, you got things to do. Nope, not gonna do it. That's why that's why football is so much harder than hockey. Oh God. Next up, 'cause you got so many of those games, you get to play. You got 82 of them. What do you do, basil? I think everything's more growing pains right now. We're 5 games into the season, 5 games that we've all been working together. We're all still getting to know each other. Russell's getting to know the team. The team's getting to know him. Same thing for me. Is when you're in those high critical situations, how people react, what plays are kind of our go tos, what we want to accomplish. So everything's just growing pains right now. It's us just getting familiar with each other and understanding what we want to get to when we need to. Okay, Mark, at what point does it stop being about growing pains and getting to know you? Right. 84 years. Yeah, I need to stop a couple weeks ago. I mean, all right, that was during the preseason when you didn't play anybody. Okay, I'll give you two games. And you played pretty well against Seattle. I came three. I game three. Yeah, no. They worked it out. They were two and one. They were two and one. And then to add the regression over the last several games, me played, you played, it was a horrible game against like, I mean, a horrible game against San Francisco. You got throttled by the Raiders. And how do you even describe last Thursday? I don't know, but it's about ready to happen again this Thursday. Today, this is Thursday, right? Yeah. Washington and Chicago. I like to call them the manders. The manders and the bears. No, God. Please no. It actually could be worse than last Thursday. It's hard to believe that it could be worse. But it could. It could. Al Michaels and Kirk her street working on some new material. Al Michaels will not show up. It was just refused to go to the game. Next on the morning broom. Smith. Walled off by Powell, but sidesteps and puts it up and puts it in what a tough play. Preseason hoops. Last night, as the nuggets will get started next week, they improved to two and two in the preseason with a one 26 one 15 win over the LA clippers, a game in which we saw token appearance from Nikola Jokić, Michael Porter junior played, as did Aaron Gordon, but no Jamal Murray. Do you follow police direction as you make your way past? Once again, that's the fairfax county Parkway southbound, your Pope's head road, southbound side of 95, the work crews along the left side of the roadway after one 23, single right lane gets you by with zero delays, so just don't bump into any cones while you're out there, headed westbound on 66, worker was near two 34, the Prince William Parkway, currently, looks like they are on the left gun state to the right, you may have two right lanes available to you there. Eastbound side looks good, no issues towards the beltway. In Maryland, the northbound side of two ten still has the war crew after Palmer road, you should have a single lane getting by as you head up towards the bellway itself. Inner loop, two right lane still blocked near Pennsylvania avenue with no delays either. Out of the beltway is quiet, no issues up towards route 15, continuing towards the BW Parkway. Southbound two 70, no accident scenes reported, just watch out for that sinkhole repair. That's just before three 70, there, of course, along the right hand side. Route 50 from the belt layout towards the bay bridge completely up to speed, and no issues to report on the BW Parkway. So if you're headed up towards BWI, you'll make okay time. I 95 headed southbound as you approach 100 hearing about an accident scene there as well. Sounds like they may be over on the shoulder, and if that is the case, do make sure to give them a little extra room. If you're on the right shoulder, step out of that right lane if you could. That way, if they have to walk around the vehicle or anything like that, they don't have a two ton vehicle driving past at 70 miles an hour. Scares me. If you're headed across the bay bridge, I already mentioned it, but I'll say it again. It's completely up to speed and you got your standard traffic patterns with two lanes taken to eastbound

Well, Jonathan Connor McDavid is, of course, only one player on this Edmonton Oilers team. Who else has really been contributing to this playoff run so far? What else have been the keys to their getting as far as they have? Well, that's just it. And we talked earlier about how one player can't really overcome a decrepit team around him. This is the farthest thing from a decrepit team. The oilers have some weaknesses, but they have just superb tear once at the top end. I mean, it starts with Leon draisaitl after McDavid. Ordinarily, during the regular season, dry Seidel and McDavid were on separate lines. They're playing together now. The reason for that primarily, aside from the fact that it has worked, was in the first round, Leon draisaitl was taken down by Mikey Anderson and he's been playing on what we believe to be a sprained ankle since. They had to have them at the wing because you have to skate a lot more at center than you have to skate on the wing. And he's ridden wing for Connor McDavid before, and their chemistry superb. There may not be a better player in the offensive zone than Leon draisaitl in terms of just pure passing and shooting. They've got the kind of supporting cast up front. They haven't had in ages. Guys like Evander Kane, who came in at mid season, Zach Hyman, who assigned the summer. And Ryan nugent Hopkins, who's been there forever, but really hasn't had any peers. Now they've got three of those guys, and it's made all the difference. Mike Smith, their goaltender, you know, he's 40 years old. He's a fantastic story. Coming into the playoffs, I was a little bit skeptical of Smith. He gets very hot and very cold. So I've seen him be very good and very bad, but he's been very good for most of this playoff run. He's bounced back from some really difficult place. You know, he kind of gave away game one to the kings in the first round with an atrocious giveaway. And he came back and responded with some of the best hockey he's played in Edmonton. So you really have to respect his resilience. But the other key I'd say for the oilers has been the coaching staff. They changed coaches at mid season, something that GM Ken Holland has never done. They brought up Jay woodcroft, who was a very up and coming minor league coach. They brought up his defensive coach, Dave Manson, and those two guys have worked wonders. The oilers are a different 5 on 5 team under Jay woodcroft. They're much more competitive. And Dave Manson's kind of earned a reputation as a defenseman whisperer because of the way he's developed the oilers prospects. He has found new levels from not a pedestrian defense, but one that's really not that remarkable, especially with Darnell nurse fighting through injury. He's found contributions from guys like Brett kulak, Tyson Barry, players who were regarded as somewhat one dimensional. So a lot is how to go right for the oilers to get this far. And it's a big story beyond Connor McDavid. This matchup against Colorado for the neutral hockey fan at least is absolutely mouthwatering. I mean, you have two of the league's most exciting and fastest, most skilled teams squaring off against each other. And they treated us to an old school shootout of a game in game one on Tuesday night with abs hanging on to prevail 8 to 6. Jonathan, what do you think the series will ultimately hinge on? When I look at Colorado, the player who's frightens me the most with due respect to Nathan McKinnon is kale macar because will kill macar has done this season. I don't know if he's going to win the Norris trophy, if not he'll be one or number one or number two. He's a phenomenal player and to me he's every inch the equal of McKinnon. Those two are the key point for Colorado. The differences that Edmonton has extreme skill up front. So you look at guys like Nathan McKinnon. And Gabriel lambda skug, the oilers can go toe to toe with those guys. Nazem kadri. You look at what Colorado has on defense, guys like kale mccart and Devin taves. Edmonton doesn't have anybody like that. Darnell nurse is the closest piece. And he's playing through injury. He's not a 100%. So to me, it's really going to depend on whether Colorado's defense can tip the scales of the McKinnon McDavid battle is going to be fantastic, but that McCarthy is saying that's something that Colorado has that pairing at something Colorado has that Edmonton just doesn't have an answer for that I see on paper. You mentioned McDavid and McKinnon. In those two guys you have two former number one overall picks, generational talents, arguably the top two offensive players in the league. What's also somewhat similar games as well, right? Both guys, it's just all about speed and skills simultaneously. Does this feel like a potential rivalry of the future sort of centered around those two superstars? Yes and no, because it's easy to look at McDavid McKinnon and kind of go, oh, well, this is the new Crosby Ovechkin. The problem there is when it was Crosby and Ovechkin, it was Crosby and Ovechkin with McDavid McKinnon. You have to throw auston Matthews in there too. Who's very much in that same weight class as a heavyweight offensive forward. But the cool thing about McKinnon and McDavid is like you said, they both go out with speed. Matthews is an unbelievable goal scorer. So as much as he's in the conversation and kind of makes it a three way battle instead of a two way battle, he's a different kind of player. And we'll see if Edmonton Colorado stick with a power versus power matchup where McKinnon and McDavid are playing each other all the time. I think Edmonton is going to try and get away from that as much as they can. They like to double shift McDavid. But that kind of speed, I can't think of a forward match up to that compares. As a rivalry, I think it's somewhat lacking because they're not playing each other in division play during the year, which makes it a little harder with Crosby and Ovechkin. You got more regular season matchup, so it was a little easier to.

"They're getting good goaltending right now as well. I mean, Kara it was just a better team, right? I absolutely think so. I mean, between Kel mccart and devonte, who more and more, you just slap your forehead on how Lula Morello traded him away and I understand there was a salary issue and you had to have money to sign your other players, including Matthew barzal, but boy watching Devon paves paired with kale mccart. And both of them legitimate Norris trophy candidates, that's a tough one for islander fans. But yeah, no, Colorado is a really, really, really good team. They're most people's Stanley Cup favorite throughout the regular season when you see them in person. I was down in Denver. I guess it was in February, maybe it was March, the season sort of blends together, but when you watch them play, they are at a different level in terms of team speed and it comes across much better in person than it does on TV. They just think the game better and quicker than their opponents. They play it better and quicker than their opponents. McKinnon for as good as he is, he's almost underrated and how people don't realize how good Nathan McKinnon McKinnon is and you got Gabriel land disguised with him as well. And I know nazem kadri can be a lightning rod at times for the way he plays and let me just say what's gone on with nazem kadri and the death threats and the anti Islamic rhetoric thrown his way has been absolutely disgusting and has no place in society and I would be happy to see NASA kadri be strong. And sort of stick it to the St. Louis fans through all of this. You know, I've watched a lot of Conor McDavid Andrew this postseason and I have to admit, I don't watch a lot of Connor McDavid for two reasons. He plays an Edmonton, so I don't watch the oilers, and he's playing at 10 o'clock at night, and I'm awake, but I'm not watching hockey, 10 o'clock at night, usually. And I'm missing out because he is legitimately. And again, I'm gonna say this again, I don't use the word generational cheaply, but he is a generational talent. You talk about from Gretzky the lemieux to a vegan to city Crosby to Connor McDavid. This is the lineage of greatness, right? Yeah. I mean, he is, is there a weakness in his game because he's not 6 four two 40, but he plays that way. You can't get the puck off his stick. He's got an incredible shot. He skates like the wind. He can stop on a dime, am I missing something here? Is there any? Does he do anything poorly? No, no. I can't think of anything. You talk about generational talents in that lineage and there are certainly some generational players in the NHL right now like I said at the start Victor hedman and certainly Austin Matthews with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but for anyone who is too young to have ever seen Wayne Gretzky play, Conor McDavid is as close to seeing Wayne Gretzky as you're going to get. And that's a hard comparison to make because Gretzky was a magician, but Connor McDavid is the same thing. I mean, it's almost like his escape blades are not touching the ice when he skates. He's just hovering. And speeding through. There's no resistance whatsoever. He's as good as skaters, this leak has ever seen. And his hockey vision and that's why that's what reminds me of Gretzky is the vision. Wayne never watched what was happening. He was always anticipating what was going to happen next. And that's why he delivered perfect passes time and time again because he could have seen plays developing that everyone on the ice could not be. And I really feel like Connor McDavid is that. He sees things that the other players on the ice are not seeing. But here's the problem for hockey. Two of the three guys that I consider generational talents in my generation being 43 years old, Ovechkin, Crosby, and Connor McDavid, two of them playing small markets, right? Crosby's been in Pittsburgh all these years and Connor McDavid is out there in Edmonton and I said half the people listening to the show I have no idea where Edmonton is and I said it's an Alberta and again, I don't think that helps. But the reality is, is this a problem for hockey, at least Gretzky got to LA, right? Major market. To have the best player in hockey playing where he can walk down Times Square New York City and not a single person would stop him and say, oh my goodness, you're the best player in hockey. That's a problem. Well, I would say this to that. I agree that Conor McGregor, I agree on your point with Connor mcdade that he's playing 9 30 10 o'clock at night and you have to be a real, real fan to stay up on the east coast certainly and watch that. As far as Crosby, I disagree in that within the confines of the NHL Pittsburgh is not a small market and certainly NBC or whoever has TNT TBS, whoever has had the NHL contract while sitting Crosby has been in the league as gone. They know Sidney Crosby is a TV draw. The people know Sidney Crosby and certainly he's been on the grand stage. The golden goal, what was that in 2010? If my memory serves, I'm bad on the years, but his time with team Canada. I don't think I don't think Sydney Crosby has been hidden under a rock in any way by the NHL. But I would agree that it is a bit of an issue that the NHL has fallen short in marketing what they have in the Conor McDavid. And that goes for the NHL. And so it's a huge discussion how the NHL markets its players, which is that it really doesn't. And that is an issue because you could really turn these guys into true superstars that transcend hockey and that has not been the case. Andrew, here's a solution. I think both Gary bettman and rob Manfred because he does the same thing with Mike Trout, by the way. No one would recognize him. They think he's a football player. The fact is they need to sit down with Adam silver and with Roger Goodell and figure out how to market their top players because the NFL and the NBA do it very well. Baseball is terrible at it and I think hockey's terrible at it. I mean, you're absolutely right. Connor McDavid is the best player in the game and people don't see him and Mike Trout and shoe Otani or two of the top 5 players in the game and very few people see them. It's a real problem for two major sports that the top guy is not visible per se. So what do you think? Organizing Andrew. It's also and again, this is a little bit of a tangent double edged sword, but it is a double edged sword in that the two sports you mentioned where the players and marketed and the players have become bigger than the game in both basketball and football and that has not necessarily been the best thing for fans of a particular team..

"To I'm happy Gilmore and everyone out there who is Roman yossi for Norris is chubbs, happy Gilmore's coach. I'll start. I'm stupid. You're smart. I was wrong. You were right. You're the best. I'm the worst. You're very good-looking. I'm not attractive. And I understand I fucked up. This is one of the greatest seasons. I have ever seen and will ever see from a defenseman. I love kale mccart and he's gonna win one and he's gonna probably win two or three, but what has happened since basically since I said he'd locked up the Norris trophy, has been outer worldly production from a defenseman who just so happens to be the best looking guy in the NHL. Talk about having the world by the balls, Roman Yoshi. I don't think there's ever been a player in a defenseman in the NHL who's gotten a hundred points without a forward on the team having a hundred points. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure I'll hear about it, but he's probably going to get a hundred points. The pace he's on. And I want him to get it so bad because the 90 point barrier is about to smash. I mean, what are we looking at? 30 years since that happened. And I believe maybe that same year leech had a hundred, but he has to be in the MVP discussion. And I don't know how this is such a memorable record breaking unreal NHL season. I can not wait for playoffs. I know this is the dolphin type of the time of the year that's tough, but what we are witnessing with Austin Matthews and Roman yossi and shirks freaking goals against average and save percentage. And let's not even forget the two the two headed monster and Edmonton, and they don't even really get that much credit. I think just 'cause people are so used to them being so clean. And the other guy, the fact that nobody's even talking about them is Crosby's on pace if he played all 82 games for about a 115 points himself. It's just, we are having such a special crazy year. And I don't know how you're going to get down to three MVPs. I don't, because guy, fan bases are going to be furious because there's going to be legit three guys who could say they're getting hosed, not being on the ballot. But Roman yosi and what he's done and watching how he's carried a team completely on his back and without him, I'm going to say that he is MVP because without him, Nashville isn't even sniffing the playoffs. They could be like, they could be like 12th in the conference without this guy. So as I said before, I apologize. Yeah, it's incredible what he's doing right now. Boys, I know we've been talking about team MVPs while unfortunately the New Jersey Devils lost is for the year. Jack Hughes has done for the season. He suffered a low grade MCL sprain from that all of a wallstrom hit last week. We were all traveling and stuff last week. We missed the PK subban, all the Wall Street thing. And we were like, wow, you know, we basically jumped them, but we watched the clip of it, and I know I'm not sure we agreed on the hit. I thought wallstrom led with the knee, and that's what subban saw. That's why he went over. And of course, Hughes is out. So obviously it was, you know, maybe not the best hit maybe the cleanest hit. I understood the reaction from PK and I really respect the fact that with how his, you know, maybe his overall game has been on the decline. He's been willing to step up in situations like that to protect the future. Guys like Jack Hughes, that's showing leadership. I know he's really well liked in that locker room. You always see him all posted on Instagram hanging out. He's get the hanger out of the Young Bucks. But as far as the hits concern, he clearly goes to hit him with I believe what is his right shoulder and then he leads with that same skate. So from a body position standpoint, he's going to throw a clean hit and what I think happens with and you can correct me if I'm wrong. Nowadays, a lot of guys try to avoid it and fans and with slowing everything down, they don't really want to put the onus on the player who's trying to avoid it where it's like Wall Street had already committed to make a clean shoulder hit in order to stay down on that leg specifically and then lead with that shoulder to keep it down. Him trying to move out of the way last second, that ends up getting him in trouble and it's just sucks at it ends up catching him in the worst spot. It looked like it ended up being like an MCL where smart move shut them down, I also look at it like when I spoke to talk about the situation with stamkos and when he coached him his first year, although his brain was there in his dedication was there, they wanted to get him a little bit more muscular and ready for the man's game where Jack Hughes is still filling out into his body. He clearly has the dedication where he wants to create and develop more of his skill and obviously the strength and the off ice workouts. Shut them down, let them go get faster and stronger, give them an even bigger off season to go work on that and heal up. And he's going to come back in next year and he's going to hit the ground running. So an absolute no brainer there and, you know, sometimes we expect so much of these young guys coming out. He came in as a pretty young scrawny kid, whereas now he is turning more into a man. So no, I don't think the hit was dirty at all. I respect PK for reacting the way he did, but no games, no supplementary discipline. He didn't deserve it. I couldn't agree more, and I actually, I watched his Suzuki on stutzle hit. It's like, sometimes it's just, I don't think they're leading with their knee. They're kind of planting to hit and maybe your knees ahead, but I didn't think it was like a viciously dirty on purpose hit from Wall Street to Hughes and you see your star player get injured. Yeah, you're going to go over and do something, but PK was PK was probably happy. He had to leave that game because there were guys in the Devils. And they don't play again this year..

"I think the evolution of the power play is another. And the last reason is, I don't know, I'm sure someone will have plenty of examples, but I don't know that there's been a time where we've seen so many high end point producers from the blue line. Now don't support the rush, they lead the rush. They don't they're not a secondary scoring option. They're a primary scoring option. I mean, kale mccart might get 30 goals this year. Adam Fox, Victor hedman, Roman yossi, these guys are having monster ears from the blue line. And there's more of them around the league. I think all those things kind of compute to more goals in a game. All right, a couple of other items from the GM meetings, and then we'll wrap up headlines here for episode 27. No trade clauses. This is likely already been agreed to whereby the NHL and the Players Association. Now, independently of one another, we'll have a copy of every player's no trade clause protection, right? Moving forward, all new contracts. And on off scenario and what happened and central registry didn't have the list, all of these things. And then the idea of a playoff cap. So the salary cap doesn't end game 82 of the regular season. Some form of cap would also cover and navigate how general managers is a team in the playoffs. For those who aren't aware, you should be anyway. Right now, game 82 ends. You don't have a salary cap on the playoffs. I mean, the dap lightning want to stand the company kucherov is out for the year. It comes back to the playoffs. Essentially, they had close to a $100 million salary roster, you know, during that playoff run. So why offer two thoughts on both of those starting with the no trade clauses? We would all surprise the PA and the central registry department of the NHL didn't have those lists had no idea. I'm like, oh, the heck would they not have these lists? Like to me, that was dregs out with that's a surprise as I've been in a long time. I'm like, how could something so essential to a trade and a player's movement in the league and central registry in the PA don't have copies? I was blown away..

"We're moving into the home stretch of the NHL regular season, which means the greatest postseason of them all. The NHL playoffs are just a few weeks away. Today, the athletics Eric two hot chick gives us an early look at the playoff picture and states, with impressive confidence, which two teams will meet in the Stanley Cup finals. The Stanley Cup path can be weird and chaotic and there are many, many good teams. There's 8 to ten teams that have a chance. But those are clear to the two best teams. From what are you and the athletic? I'm under skeletal. It's Tuesday, march 29th, and this is the lead. Welcome back to the lead. God, my pleasure. It's been a while. More hockey, I think. That's right. Well, that is my feeling in life in general. So I'm glad we agree on that. So Eric, we are just over a month away from the start of the NHL playoffs. So first things first here, have you started growing out your playoff beard? Well, no, I haven't. And I just find that the older I get, the less people want to see the graying stubble on my face. That might have been something that I would have done in my 20s and 30s, but I'll leave it to Joe Thornton and the rest of the National Hockey League players who are much younger than me to do that. All right, well, Eric, we wanted to run through some of the big storylines and teams to watch as we move into the home stretch of the regular season here. So let's start with the team with the best record in the NHL, and that is the Colorado avalanche. Does that number one position reflect reality? Is this the best team in the NHL? Yeah, I think that absolutely is. The top line has been phenomenal throughout the course of the season. The emergence of nazem kadri this year as a bonafide number two center. That's made an enormous difference on that team because whatever line he's played on, he has driven that line. I'm back in return. He scores. Nauseam covering did it again. The all star gets to 60 points on the season. And there have been times this year when there have been injuries to Nathan McKinnon. And he is seamlessly stepped into that number one role. So he has played at a different level this year. And I think that that changes everything there. You know, they have a fantastic guy and kale mccart. Right off the bat Cale mccar. Sends it down the slot. The number of goals he's scoring this year, the creativity that he shows on offense, you know, most people believe that that overtime goalie started a couple months back as NHL goal of the season. Please watch this one here. Forehand backhand kalema Carr oh my goodness. That better be on number one on SportsCenter tonight here on ESPN. You kidding me? At this stage of the game, you know, kale macar is the clear favorite for the Norris, I believe. And then the other thing is their defense, they run one to 8 deep. And every team that has made a long playoff run in the last dozens of years seems to have an injury or two along the way. No team is better suited to survive injuries on the blue line than Colorado. Samuel Gerard isn't even playing right now because he's got an injury and he's someone that can come into the lineup before the start of the playoffs. So there are depth on the blue line is unparalleled around a National Hockey League and then the only other question there is is the goaltending good enough. And I think that there was a period of time early on when you might have said, you know, is Darcy Kemper the guy. I like him a lot. You know, I look at the way he played at the world championships last year. He has been a very good goalie in the past on some bad teams. And so I look at him now. I think it took him a little bit of time to adjust to the way they play in Colorado to adjust to new teammates. But I think he's found his stride in the second half of the season. I have no questions about emperor at all, especially if he stays healthy. So, you know, I'm not a betting man, but if you were to push all your tips in on one team, going into these class, Colorado would be that team. All right, next up, the team with arguably the league's two top offensive players has also been perhaps the most inconsistent team this season Eric, and that is the Edmonton Oilers. They also made a very controversial move when they signed a deal with the forward Evander Kane a few months ago. So Eric, is this team finally poised to make a deep run in the Stanley Cup playoffs or are we going to once again be asking if Connor McDavid's incredible talents are being squandered up there in Edmonton? Well, I think the biggest issue with edmondson is the goaltending last Saturday they gave up 9 against Calgary and cost cannon started Smith came on and relief. Flames had four goals on 11 shots now 5 on 12. And it's Mike Smith, the former Calgary flame. Hitting to the net here has cost me tonight is over. Vander cane has come in a good fit there, very seamless. Ryan nugent Hopkins has missed a lot of time recently. He's been back in the lab. So if you look at Edmonton's depth up front, very good. They are very strong there. Defense not bad, but I think there's a lot of people that are wondering why they didn't address the goaltending issue. The answer is largely for salary cap reasons. And I think that that will be a question mark going forward. They are relying on the fact that last year, Mike Smith had a very good year at the age of 39. The general manager there Ken Holland has a lot of faith in Mike Smith. But I also think that his hands were a little bit tied. The salary cap is a factor in today's NHL. So no, it is the goaltending holds up and they believe internally that it can, then Edmonton has a chance to make some noise in the playoffs. But if you look at all the other contenders in the Western Conference and examine the relative goaltending strength of the top teams like Colorado like Calgary, like Minnesota, that's the one area where Edmonton is really lacking. Okay, moving on about two months ago, the Vegas golden knights were tops in the Western Conference, but now this team is fighting to make the playoffs. They of course made that blockbuster trade to get Jack eichel earlier this season. So Eric, what is going on in Vegas? And can this team get it together down the stretch? Well, I think it's a couple of things. One is injuries, but the other is evolving chemistry. They've changed so much personnel there in Vegas since that first year when they went to this family Cup final as the golden misfits. And then the one thing about hockey is the consummate team game. I always kind of likened the systems that hockey teams play to being in the chorus line of the rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. If something is just slightly out of sync, it makes the whole thing not work. And I think that that's what's happened in Vegas. They've had to deal with injuries to so many of their key people. 6 of their top players are nursing injuries right now. The latest William Carlson, he's out several weeks with broken foot. And they've had to integrate some of these new faces, including Jack eichel, who I think the last two weeks has certainly been raising the level of his game and starting to feel comfortable after the surgery and comfortable in that new environment comfortable in the system there. So they're kind of a weird, dark horse sleeper because I think that if they get all of their injured people back healthy, if they make the playoffs, they could be a very dangerous opponent, because Mark stone isn't playing patriots, has been in and out of the lineup a number of times on paper with all hands on deck. That is a very strong team. But they've just been out of sync. So do they have enough time to get back in sync? It'll be a challenge. But this way, if they sneak in as a 7th or 8th seed, they're going to be a dangerous first round opponent for whomever they get. Okay, staying in the west, the Calgary flames are in second place and have given up way fewer goals than anyone else in the Western Conference. The team also has a lot of offensive firepower. So are the flames a legit. Stanley Cup contender in your mind, Eric. Yeah. Well, they have a traditional playoff success formula there, because if you think about how do.

"Colorado avalanche defenseman kale mccart has become a bona FIDE NHL superstar. He's up the middle the car down is Robinson. Oh my goodness gracious. That was amazing. And he's now one pace to do something that no NHL defenseman has done since 1986. Meanwhile, his teammate and fellow number four overall pick, phone byram has not spent so fortunate. Got slammed into the inboards of defenseman Bowen barram is gone down the tunnel to the dressing room. Today, the story of two Colorado avalanche defenseman, who have had very different luck in their young career so far. And what stands between each of them and greatness. From wondering anti athletic, I'm Andres kelto. It's Tuesday, December 7th, and this is the lead. Peter ball, welcome to the lead. Hey, thanks for having me. So, Peter, I want to start today with Colorado avalanche defenseman kale mccart. He has been absolutely sensational. Basically, since he entered the NHL two seasons ago, how do you begin to describe this guy's skills and what really sets him apart? Well, he's something that a lot of people haven't really seen before. He's an exceptional defenseman with skating ability that is kind of unparalleled. He does not just ask. Flashing the speed of the skill slides it by flurry. For stories in the past I've talked to some of the great defensemen that have come before him in that HL from Nicolas lidstrom to write bork, who also won many Norris trophies, and they're kind of blown away like this is a really special player who has offensive guests that you just don't usually see in defenseman. Scores. We talked about the mobility of these two young Colorado defenseman the car and Byron and makar shows it right here. He's kind of the quarterback of the whole thing a lot of the time, especially on the power play, where he'll just kind of walk the blue line with the puck. See who's open and just hit them perfectly.
