Dustin diamond passed away from leukemia. It's tragic so elvis duran show put up a post that put up a picture of dustin diamond and said he died. And everybody's like oh my god. "Thanks for coming on. Thanks for having. But first of all big fantasy team It's an incredible show and you portray it so well thank you thank you tell me something. How are you most like your character. I'd like to think that i was his thoughtful. Is i'm very similar With my wife and my my kids in my mother the way he the way he is his faith of course in his the sense of just getting things done you know kind of drowning out the noise and just doing thing by doing things by the numbers. I've imparted a lot. You know part of myself onto him like that. Are you involved with the military outside of the show. Though my dad was a marine my uncles everybody was in the military muslim vietnam era. Nominate got out I was in rotc as a kid. i've done tons of military movies. Been through like fourteen weeks of boot camp altogether for various films and just kind of always been around. You know help out certain organizations that we work with seal team as well as like. I'm on my own private part my life but i try to donate what i can do. I can Because they're like our ultimate servants. That's amazing i heard that When you were younger you actually had ambitions of becoming a navy seal. I did own apartment. Is you've got to join the navy. Shout out to the navy. I just couldn't imagine being on the water all anti I love to swim but and when you get out there. It's it's tragic spaceman order but Yeah i was in. Rotc junior rotc. A air force reserves reserve trae core as a key for four years Studied aerospace and aeronautic engineering was in high school And it was on a scholarship to west point everything i thought i was really going to go to the military and It just wasn't in the cards for me. Wife got pregnant my girlfriend at the time and we a different path. She was going to join the military as well as air force she went down to maps and everything and showed a. I'm pregnant okay. We can't go now. So yeah. I've been It's always been around my life Because my dad's marine raised me very militant household a free household. My mom was the winds. Like live your life and my dad was like do this by the numbers. So i had i think feels the perfect brain. How did your parents feel about you going into the military. Did they want you to it. My dad did. My dad sees a vietnam era marine. And he said there's no place for black man son at that time But then he didn't want he thought i was smarter than that and he didn't want me to be a greenwich. If i was gonna go join the military than i had to be an officer. That was his one rule and eat just saw how much that's one thing about me and Ray period has the same raise. has ocd a lot of people don't realize he's always together because he has ocd and As a kid you know. Once i started putting on that uniform on my increases had to be sharpened to cut cheese with you know in my room had to be squared away and and everything so my dad's saw that love that i have for following directions and and doing things by the numbers so he knew he couldn't stop me from when to join the military but i think he always knew that something else was gonna happen. Did you have brothers and sisters yet. I have my sister my older sister and my brother Who passed away. My mom had my mom had to be signs and then my My father had another son From both from previous marriages All passed away. So all i had was my sister My sister kalandria brown was nine years older than me Who used to beat up on to beat up on. She's for water on my head. She was She thought i was spoiled. So she was worthless to me but She's one of the best people i've ever met. No so we're really close. And that's great. Did she ever take to this military way. No no no. She was a bookworm. Super smart you know in my brother spencer. He didn't he didn't pass away until he was like thirty He was a big musician. Guy so i also get really into books like my sister and start playing music like my brother. Kind of honor him but No she was not a big military person she no not not even the slightest She's always reading archie comics. Got it okay. So your love for this structure of military were your inclination to a. I should say Is is that something that your dad trained into you or did that come naturally because euro cd my dad imparted. A lot of that. Too on me is she showed the value it. My dad is the greatest person i've ever known. He's my hero and he he would always he's spoken like parables he'd speaks in parables. Like jesus you know the way he would explain things just kind of blew my mind very common sense type person but he's always very episode. You know commonsense. it's not very common. But the way he taught me It showed me the value in structure And i guess he saw those things in me. He's he saw. The kind of germany's are kind of like the wild side and then on the other side of me fighting to to put everything in a box and he wanted to teach me that Certain things belong to box or something things outside of it. But i have the foundation of know how to put things in the box and then you can color outside the lines. Got it after you understand what the colors are. And what do you have. In the box. So yeah i think he imparted a lot of that imparted a lot of that in me as well as my mother. She loves cleanliness. She hates filth But both of them kinda tag team be arrays. My parents were being raised by malcolm. X martin luther king junior my dad i was being malcolm l. Melito as baas and my mom being very much martin luther king junior sweeter kind you know so both very strong very strong personalities and since values yeah right one hundred percent. So how'd you get involved in martial arts. Because i know that you've got some extensive martial arts tracy I am as my dad. My dad He my mom is well but my dad came up in a rough neighborhood. Now's a short little bright skin kid with long curly hair. He wanted me to be able to handle myself and then he saw i really liked. But he always had me watching bruce lee movies and chuck norris and all that and he saw him which i liked it. Not run around and kicking and stuff. He just always wanted me to have training in my life. I mean those four or five years old running. Teach me the value of physical Physical work early on and learning how to to be able to do To be.

kalandria brown four fourteen weeks four years nine years both thirty jesus one one hundred percent baas spencer Ray martin luther king bruce lee one rule five years old one thing l. Melito first

So put on a happy say, they have like a good chorus and then everything else like people on the beat like Kelly role comes she's like me. Present. And then. Everything's GonNa be alright. "It keeps us free and then the words democracy dies darkness is on the screen. Yes dies darkness so long as it doesn't get suspended by an editor there for tweeting. True facts about a basketball here but you can buy the Washington Post or take this ad also from last year telling US veterans could google their military occupation mutation codes to help them with job search. No simple code can define who you are but now can help you. Search for whatever's next but the point is we now associate Google a product with an uplifting emotion even the trump ad that is to air during the Super Bowl does this Under president trump America is stronger safer and more prosperous than ever before that's associated with uplift the Bloomberg at dwells in sadness and doesn't really offer a solution Kalandria in camp will never hold her son again but it does associate the cause of fighting gun violence with Michael Bloomberg and yes clenching camp is a black woman from Texas. Texas has a lot of delegates. They vote Super Tuesday. And it's more or less it doesn't break. New Grounds is some amazing new political ad. But I do think it will stand out during the Super Bowl. It's true. The AD is no more insightful. And no more stirring and no more convincing convincing than a similar ad by any other candidate would be if that other candidate sat on a pile of fifty two billion dollars already spent two hundred seventy five million and ads and all the other candidates are going through the traditional route of meeting actual voters in the actual states. That actually vote early and I can could understand why it seems unfair to them to ignore the established path in favor of an aerial assault. But you see Bloomberg is buying vote with his factual message message that he has spent time effort and lots of money to become a very effective counterweight to the. NRA is unfair. That is a message that could and should connect with lots of voters even if they were only exposed to it because Bloomberg alone was able to put it in front of their eyes on the show. Today we've no impeachment. Update think you know what's going to happen anyway. The Pentagon announces its bringing an old weapon system. Back that it could be something of a landmine. What John's been doing the last couple election cycles is a show called the Wilderness now in twenty eighteen he took the show which looked at all constituencies within the Democratic Party? They put the show out there. And guess what the Democrats won big am I saying there was a cause and effect. Maybe maybe if they had edited that interview with with Tom Perez a little differently currently there wouldn't have been a big democratic win based on that premise. Don't change what's working. The wilderness is out with a new series. What they do this time as they go region by region and and talk about how the Democrats can win the White House? Jon Favreau is here. Thanks for coming on John. That is such a better pitch than what I've been. I've been pitching the fact that this is key to. Why didn't think of that? Thank you. Let's talk about that as a matter question. You guys are activists and at least some commentators. Let's say you know something along. The lines of journalism is their attention. There is their attention when you put together a show and you want to be as informative as possible but you also have this goal and this goal isn't necessarily simply informing the audience. It's winning in election. You know it hasn't been as difficult as I thought it would be when we sort of got into the business we're orphan about the fact that we're activists and you know what our biases are like. When we started this week we sort of looked at each other? And we're like everyone's GonNa know us as Obama people forever you know. So what are beliefs are you know what side of the aisle over brands like. But we'RE NOT GONNA able to hide that and pretend that we've become these nonpartisan reporters who just gonNa tell it like it is now but what we can do is promise. You know that we're going to give commentary that's based in fact that we're going to give you the analysis as we know that that we're gonNA be especially after two thousand sixteen humble in our analysis the primaries have been tough because we have all wanted to be a I'm not travel yet or at least transparent right and what we think so neutral is not like we're not gonNA take your neutral about Tulsi Gabbard right. I'm not I'm not neutral about Chelsea. That's an exception because I think she has I don't think she's in this for the right reasons. And I think that's fairly transparent but when we talk about all the other candidates we try to be honest about What strengths and weaknesses? We see as people who have been on campaigns before yes and I want to get to the wilderness. But since we're here let's talk about this year I had one critique and I want to give you great compliments if there is one critique it would be that you guys will weigh in and say rhetorically. This was successful zestful. That brundige did rhetorically. That was misstep that warranted. You'll save tactically smarter. Spend your money here. A misstep to spend your money honey there where I see you're weighing in is on the policy positions that are actually alive within the Democratic Party. Zeal skewer bad republican policy positions but if it is on a Medicare for all and Medicare for all who wanted. I think you'll mostly talk about how to communicate the different points of view. But I don't know which of those two choices any of you guys. Firmly believe is the right choice politically. I think we've done that policy by policy at times times. The problem is I could tell you like if we were to start the healthcare system over from scratch. I have real forget all politics aside. I have have real concerns about what the transition to a single payer system. Looks like from what we have right now and I guess all politics aside all Democratic Primary Marie politics aside but politics in the sense of you need sort of buy in from the public to do something. Once you're governing forget about elections right and and having gone through the affordable care act Not only passing the affordable care act which is very hard but the implementation of the affordable care act. which as you remember ever hit a few bumps it's really hard to move the giant system of government at all even in a small little direction? Let let alone something as big as that so then let me ask you. There's another part of this debate. Which is the overton window that some people and I believe Bernie I believe what he says? Not Because of some rebound effect of what he says he believes because he believes it but there are a lot of people who will least argue. Well it doesn't matter you have to talk about the way Warren and talking about it to get a movement. But here's a here's overrated to some extent. Here's a good example of that gets into the Wilderness. So I do four. And I didn't even mean to focus groups for the wilderness and did four different groups of voters in Arizona just outside Phoenix. I talked to Romney Clinton voters.

"Simply. In this case in the USC case, it's a backdrop. It's it's something to add to your resume. It's something that will make you look more plausible to others. And this is not the only thing that happened the unquenchable desire of college, admissions officers to engineer, racial diversity. So they're worried about getting their racial quotas up to a certain level lead to cheating scandal far more consequential than this when my Kalandria his wife ran a college prep school in Breaux bridge, Louisiana. The subjected students to seduce dick, physical abuse and emotional humiliation, while inventing their college credentials out of whole cloth. The transcripts that Landry fabricated adopted every trope of the holistic admissions process used to override the admission standards apply to most Asian and white applicants see. Colleges are now biased against Asians and against white people. They're they're telling them that. There are too many of you all. And that. We want more black applicants. When indeed. What happens is that many of these people get there, and they find that they're really not quipped. To study at the level that some of these schools allows to study. So they have to be up there. Mental health experts, you know, to deal with the depression and the burn out that that occurs in some cases. And that's what this this article is saying many of the schools graduates, experienced psychological difficulties at their colleges when you're put in a place that you don't belong by false. Pretenses then you will suffer stress from having been there falsely, you know, because you're in classes that are over your head. Now, the what happens is some of these schools, if they're going to do this game that they're playing and gonna compromise their values in order to let anybody in based on money, or whatever you're going to you're going to have to deal with the fallout of it or either that or compromise your standards, you know, what a Cal says about UK. It's now for everybody. What college is not for everybody. That's right. It's it's not an when you get to college. Hopefully, your freshman year the way I approached it you learn how to get better yourself more year. You learn how to study more you learn how to schedule you learn time management. You learn all those things that you can apply in the business world when you're out on your own and either you get it or you don't you flunk out? It's right and. Vo something to Liz with. I was talking to somebody last night about this subject because it's on everybody's months. People are baffled. We have a friend. That's Dana, Florida state. And he told us that they're not flunking people at like, they used to which is a shocking fact. That was the big fear. You know, if you went to college you had to make it work, and apparently now professors are not giving much below sees. And they're wanting their tenure and the bad grades or flex on them. They think instead of the student, and you know, I think the whole system is becoming more and more broken in. This is just got parents that. That. Remember when when I was. I had a small stint as the radio announcer. Well, not radio the PA announcer for a small school here in Lexington. Their baseball program. And so I was the guy on the on the Mike public the PA system announcing the batters and things like this. And there was a fly ball that was hit. And there were three of our players around it, and none of them jumped into catch it and fell in for base, hit anyone of them could have got it. So I said over the PA system come on guys. You know, you can do better than that that caused an outrage among the parents that I would have said something about against their child. It's amazing nowadays, you know, my parents would have done anything. Well, they weren't that interested in my let career such as it was. But they would not have ever been triggered by somebody saying something negative about me. They would say maybe it will serve to grow him up a little bit today. Parents are so concerned about potentially going against their kids or somebody saying something harmful to their kids that they'll fight you over any corrective measures, and I'm sure that comes into the classroom that that Univer when you got mommy's still trying to get in the ear of college coaches to get their son more playing time. I'm sure college professors to give the kid a D minus because that's what he or she deserves probably hear from the parents. And if the parents are giving money to the school, it's the same thing. And so where is the truth? And all of the fact is the kids don't get anything out of. Of it. And they they end up entitled brats when I came home, I freshman year person Mestre, Georgetown, and I had incomplete in English. My parents were like now the I mean, they they didn't take me out back and horse with me. But it was you're on your own. If you're going to flunk out if you can't figure it out we're done, we're we're not gonna pay for this and Butch for years through college just for you to do whatever and second semester, I had to straighten up and figure it out. Right. And I did and I really had to work hard. And you know, there's there's no accountability anymore. There's none. Yeah. And I told him I said this this is on me. I didn't turn in a couple of papers. It wasn't fact I didn't go to class. I went to class. It was just some things I had to improve on. And I worked my tail off to figure it out. There you go and the professor didn't give me any leeway whatsoever. Because it doesn't get any right way. Right. You'll get out find a job supplement, your income, everything you guys talk about in the second hour, but try exactly all goes hand in hand. And this, you know, the other thing is to not to change the subject too much on this. But this goes the Nath let to if you read the list coaches involved in this deal this college. Absolutely. Yeah. It was the fraud deep. It is got into them paying those guys were taking money to act like the kid could be on the team when indeed they were never going to be on the team. And how the colleges themselves don't know about this. I don't understand because I think they are in some ways complicit they act like a we didn't know this was going on the fact is how could they have not known. It was going on. That's a failure. That's an institutional failure failure to supervise that's called institutional failure. In my business. It can cost you your license. So. And we're one of the most regulated businesses out there. "Definitely I grew up really fast in that time period because I just had titan three weeks before. And so just as I'm saying Hello to someone. I I'm turning right around and saying goodbye and it happened. So quick, you know, she was just in LA like holding titan when he was. Oh, teeny tiny, and then I was literally watching her a sin, you know. So it's indefinitely matured me pretty quickly, though, but I had the best support system like have people flying who I hadn't talked to win years, and they flew into Atlanta, my family was there, and they were supportive in my face. Fans word salt. Awesome. That will make me cry alone. They were so supportive. I'm sorry, you had to go through right? All right. But I learned so much about friendships and relationships. And when you look at people in there are you speak to them, you're to be present. You know what I mean? Like, that's what that taught me above anything. I'd like to be present with people now and it's, it's sometimes hard, you know, in the industry, you like, oh, you had fashion shows, and you're texting and you this in like, is this person walks in, and this, and that, and I'm like, hi. How are you? Like I wanna be in that began with face to face. Yeah. Nothing like it. I love it. I crave it. Yeah. Yeah. What you get that in, in live performances. It's different. I know. That's not that's not a friendship but you've had some incredible live gigs recently. You know, you reference the Destiny's Child moment at Coachella. But you also performed with Stevie Wonder mistaken until, like two in the morning. One night in LA. Oh, it was so awesome. What's it like this is not the first time you've performed Stevie? Now, it was once with Destiny's Child in this time he asked me there, and it's an honor to get invitation from savy wonder because I grew up loving him loving his voice loving that harmonica loving his melodies just like how he makes us feel every emotion that we're so blessed to feel. So when I got on stage by the way, it was so late and we were supposed to be leading our nanny go. And so someone every working mom, by the way, relates on TV. The person that works was like he's about to go on. I was like I'm supposed to be leading money any go right now. He's like in five minutes. I was like, no problem. I was like I need. I have to stay here. You're gonna have to understand that tell you Nancy Stevie Wonder I'll pay you extra Stevie like it's all good God on stage and I did not want to get off the stage. He was just awesome. Because those are moments you don't take for granted. Yeah. Okay. So I wanna talk about your sunglasses collaboration coming up with smoke and mirrors at Barney's, which is one of the reasons we're here. First of all, why sunglasses I have been obsessed with glasses ever since I could afford them to be completely honest. What was your first period year emojis? Okay. You started bang. Jay some good glasses. And I remember I got so excited, I, I had them for the longest time, and I remember I took a boat trip with some friends, and I was so bummed because I had them since ninety eight and it was one of the first big things are bought myself in lost on a boat trip. I was so bummed. So I've always had this obsession with him. So I was so happy when this opportunity came about specially because mocha mirrors is like rooted in music, a main collection that they have is, of course, like inspired by songs. So it just made sense. The collaboration made sense in how did you figure out what you wanted the sunglasses to look like what the style would be was just like things I Kelly would wear use things. I would wear what looks great on off facial shapes. And, and what like what makes you feel fly, you know what I mean? 'cause glasses like also do that. You can have the worst makeup day or face day as soon as you put on some glasses. You like they can't tell. Oh, me nothing that home. And I love that. It's can't wear sunglasses in job interviews, right? Can you imagine if people starting to, like, oh no, I got this job? I'm good. So what was the process of creating fashion, like compared to the process of creating music? Like, did you feel like they were kind of similar? There were definitely kind simply because I think that each time you see it like, once you send it in, you know, to, to be made you like okay when it comes back to make sure it's everything that you wanted to be. And even if it's the smallest hint of something that you're just not sure about you have to say, I think we should try this over or make this lens a little bit darker than I think, is going to match the shade of the exterior of is like, all kinds of stuff you think. Yeah, but I think that just as much as you put detail in music, you do it in everything that you do by the way. One of my favorite details about you, your first name is actually Kalandria. Yes. Crate name. I'm mom anybody call you Kalandria my husband. Yeah. And who else Kalandria my husband? That's beautiful. Thank you. I like that. Well Kalandria give thank you so much.
