"Than that. But basically in the mid nineties. I found this company that was beating provider of setup up boxes and software. That goes into set-top boxes and the dissemination of content but digital contents and the world at the time was willing from analog to digital and you could see but this company was going to see an explosive growth in revenues immediately because i bought into a ninety seven in france germany. Uk and the netherlands. Italy and everyone's all said you know we're gonna move from analog to digital before the ninety nine and you're not gonna do it at the last minute and as you move from analog digital yourself boxes and Broadcasting companies these pay-tv companies to basically by new technology and we were the only independent provider of that technology in the world budding. The company at five times depressed earnings and by depressed earnings. I mean not a single digital or analog and it was the end of the orders before the wave official came in so that company ended up seeing a twentyfold increase in revenues within a two year timeframe and then devaluations apply to these companies. Went up tenfold as we bought into the stock at an average cost of twenty seven. Twenty eight pence. So i'd go up to ten pounds within a year and a half and we put a really big trump or the portfolio in it because the company was castro january. If it had that on eastbound shannon was leaving player on a profitable growing industry. So it's like what is the risk of buying leading player in industry that has explosive growth ahead of it is already cash for gender has on its balance sheet that you're buying five times earnings. So he bought quite a especially inside. Go up forty four year and a half and it is my ambition to find another company like this and forty or fifty. Four upside is tough to get. We have a few things that we think maybe could be like ten. Fold if we played in riot. Or if we're lucky buddy. That was probably the most fun i peaked. How do you think about holding company. And this is a challenge for a lot of people as it grows bigger party portfolio. And you have the one bagger the to bagger the five bagger. We did a twitter said. Hey asked our listeners. Have you ever had a ten bagger ever had one hundred bagger most people haven't and part of the challenges you have a stocker and investment and in doubles. It's like hallelujah confetti. You're celebrating the best thing that ever happened because most people don't really see the potential or the chance of a company actually going fifty one hundred x it's hard to fathom and so how do you think about selling and this applies to all your names good times bad times. 's it just a fundamental story in update is it some sort of technical criteria where you don't want it to be more than twenty percents portfolio How do you think about it really good question. And there's a person who has question beautifully. And i've met that person i can tell you what they said. But but look before. I started our fund and i used to work at partners left to start a fund then at basic pre wedding met with all the portfolio managers that i most respected in the world. A number of whom ended up becoming really dear friends. Maybe top among them mark kingdon. Who's one of the most thoughtful people. I've met over the course of my career who i must give a shoutout to but another extraordinary person that i met with was really kind and super generous with his time was julian robertson. And he really. I think does a great job of explaining how important your question is particularly for value focused investors because you might invest in a company as dp on their valued and as it moves from being dp on their value to perhaps being valued in line with peers. What you as a value investor can usually forget or usually do forget is the effect of the most powerful force in the world. This is not what he said. But something along. The lines of i said most powerful force in the world is compounding so if you own a company that continues to grow really nice. The that continues to be well managed and continues to play an important Dominating ruined growing and profitable industry. Unless it's overvalued you will do well knock yourself over ninety five percent of my career until the very recent past. I have always moved to sell when something has gone to a price target to be affected when the company's fortunes were much more than the arts today and we're like well that's the price of can therefore we're going to exit now we go up tenfold. We're like well where we dump for selling spot on the japanese other things that we felt had greater upside. So i can't. There's something to that merit. There's a lot of things refined to allocate capital two but by and large when you catch a company that is a growing leader in a profitable industry. And where you believe that the best is still ahead of them only to sell unless it gets into creamy overvalued territory the concept of lock box or coffee can portfolio. I think it's hard for a lot of people in a lot of people. I also think underestimate the time that it takes for these hundred baggers. If you look at some of the studies over history a lot of these can take ten years. But some of those charts. My god. the most beautiful thing you'll see is a stock twenty percent a year for a decade it's gorgeous sight to behold while you find a lot of the returns of being jammed up in shrimp specific periods and kai-ming element i think is the one that by definition we can never get right because we are in control the time it's sort of like a rag variable in our lives in general uncertain our investment lives and i think that allowing for time to work and being patient enough to let time do its thing i would save invariably rewarding again if you're invested in a company that is.

"Welcome back to ball. I coach through at the world of basketball. And as you all know our world has been flipped upside down. Thinks is the way we feel each and every day of basketball moving forward. Yes we're speaking about the death of Kobe Bryant. In this time this whole show is going to be a celebration towards Colby. This is going to be pretty much part of. Cw and sports second-line coby. So we'RE GONNA WE'RE GONNA WE'RE GONNA talk about all the great things as a matter of fact. Let's talk about what the Brian had the state of this now. Mind you abroad. Within the last twelve hours prides Kobe's desk spoke to call me twice a matter of fact it was right after he passed colby on the all-time scoring list. He spoke not knowing that that will be one of the last time she spoke with his his statement on police passing. I beg but here I go man. I'm sitting here trying to write something for this pulse but everytime I try I begin trying again just thinking about you need. Gd And a friendship. Bond brother La we had. I literally just heard your voice Sunday morning before I left Philly to head back to. I WanNa say but just can't right now because I can't get through until we meet again my brother Mama for Life gee-gee for life. Those words of Lebron James Sound of the words is going to make this season even more important. We can't guarantee anything because as we know in the NBA season. Anything can happen. But I can tell you this. That got motivation from that team has role ten times more. I for one cannot wait to see how things are. Now that the focus is their Mama metality now. We all sat back and waited. Say here how. Bryant was going to respond in her words would be and of course we wait patiently because we have to respect our privacy especially on this very hard time of hers losing a husband and a daughter. But do you are. These are the words that she kind was that was spoken that she will my girls and I wanNA thank the millions of people who shall support and love during this horrific time. Bryant integrate along with a beautiful family photo of Kobe. Bryant being exactly who Kobe Bryant was a family man. A husband and unadorned Fontham doting father at that. He loved those four girls and now was an amazing thing to see. I WANNA go ahead and wanted to next segment and I know it's hard for us to move all but as Vanessa's clearly stated that's Co you would've wanted for us. Go ahead and press on. I'm going to jump over to the next the next topic. I want to talk about the Atlanta Hawks vs the Philadelphia Seventy sixers. This was an important game and the reason why I bring this game up dory are Kobe Bryant tribute is because one whom Kobe. Bryant's biggest. Inspirations Vince Carter was action plane in this game. Vince Carter The fact that he played it as game is amazing thing he actually has now passed. Dirk Nowitzki for the honor on phenomenons dirt with the most games played at one thousand five hundred twenty three games. So congratulations Vince Carter. That was a huge step for you and a million. Keep pushing your your well your way you might have to play a whole nother season. Catch Robert Parish. But I'm rooting for you. Anybody can do it. I know you can say I'm I'm rooting for you now. Also in that game trae young played very well very well. I'm talking hands down on his love. Thirty nine points going hard. But he's still followed that up with eighteen says making sure to go into a move around his definitely moving the ball. I was a big thing to see. We often want to talk about the Brooklyn Nets. Yes Brooklyn Nets with Kobe. Pretty much like little brother. Kai-ming Irving we all remember that exchange between Colby and Kyrie during the time that they played on USA team together. The funny exchange here talking about that he could be called me one on one thousand great thing but it. Heavy Hearts Kyrie Irving took the floor and Spencer. Dinwiddie did something that was. I find to be extremely classy. He as you all know Vincent Dinwiddie for the nets had number eight but he changed at number eight in honor of Kobe so now he wears the number twenty six and he showed out in the name of Kobe yet. When year points three rebounds six assists and not to mention Sean Prints showed up to twenty two points and seven rebounds. That was exactly what they needed to go ahead and take down the Detroit Pistons. Won Twenty five fifteen but everybody would play around now. Let's game that. I WanNa talk about that. This is the mentality that that that Kobe would love. This was a game of two heavyweights going back and forth. Yes the story abroad in beer rolled into Portland and found out that there were running on daytime. And let me tell you. They lillard showed up. He had his first triple double notching. Thirty six points eleven assists and ten rebounds but Russell was was not to go ahead. Abi showed up yet. Thirty nine point six assists and ten rebounds looking really good Jane Hart Herald Eighteen points in the loss but hands down. That's not what it was about. It was about Damian Lillard going against Russell Westbrook and if anybody remembers was okay see when Daimler pretty much you know random. Outta town with that with a low shot to end the game in a way it was something great to behold once again to watch them play against each other. I think that this is something that I definitely add was excited to see. Congratulations on there. That was amazing. Another thing that I want to go ahead and touch base on before we go to break is going to be the All Star game changes yes also gave them to be a little bit different than I watch out of. Stay with me and to understand what was going to go to. First record is going to be like three mini games each time. It's over and it's going to be twelve quarters. Each time it starts over is over and zero zero now. The winner of those three mini games. Meaning they're going to add up all three scores for three mini games and decide. Who's in WHO's ahead going into the fourth quarter? There will be no time but it will be twenty four points. You would have to score between four points. Set by the winning team scored twenty four points higher than that and that will be the number that they will have to reach or pass in order to win so I think it's going to be a little bit more competitive. It don't go ahead and honor. Kobe Bryant and I think is absolutely amazing. I think this would be things done to honor him. In my in my opinion one of those things I would go ahead and honor him by would be changing the game of twenty one to know all the call it twenty one make it make it be colby. You Know Twenty four point game if you missed on quite game you go back to eight. That's what I think. My contract contribution is a great idea. I heard it..

"Now win. Do we escalate to this point of going to the EEOC? Yeah. Great question. First of all, that would pay not been updated since the Trump administration, and I can tell because they have gender identity in sexual orientation included allergy BT Q, protective are really open the air, the Trump administration was very important under Obama administration. But right now, the EEOC is looking for Arbor legislature, or the OJ to come out with something explicit on how they want them to do you, the Q claims. Oh did. I know that it's a big controversy there circuit. But right now, meaning the court of appeal than a different regions, where you go all the way up to the court of appeal some court materials, they gender identity and sexual orientation is included underneath the gender category. Other court threw pills have said, no. If congress one is include that. They should've said it explicitly, right? Right now. We're looking for one of things to happen, either congress to go back and clarify, the law, which is definitely not going to happen in a divided. Congress or getting one of these cases in front of the print court and having them give the final word. So until that happened. It's kind of like a. Really a pasta. I encourage people to still go after those claim. But just don't be surprised. You don't give a lot of traction about what I'll say about that. Will thank you for letting us know that because I, I just assumed like. Yeah. I mean under Obama administration, I would walk into your theme. Aired BB L U B Q poster than we were very proud of the fact that the agency not only included them, but it actually become one of their preferred categories really go out there. So back in, I would say, yeah, four th in a big team of sixteen. Liz was a, you know, recess looters as attorneys like, oh, yeah, the sexy area law right there because it was new. The easy, got their hands on one of the they were taking people to business. I never been more proud of it. You be there when they were like really excited about making sure that everybody is protecting do believe everybody, there's protection and a workplace under the Trump administration. I, I think that this is. I hope the girl I'm gonna poster. Yeah. Y'all call y'all call your congress people, and I'm in, in the episode show notes, I'm gonna put information to get in contact with your congressmen or women, and we need to be calling them and saying, look, you represent me in this is my expectation of you. Oh, god. Help us okay feet created, you know, people right back of nineteen sixty four eight nineteen sixty four in created this commission that we're going to oversee all these charges right? The problem when it was created is didn't have any power. They called it the toothless tiger because it didn't have any power to bring court cases against anybody event nothing that the eight you'll see was even involved. So an amendment by nineteen ninety congress finally got smart, and said we should probably give them some teeth, this is win. The EOC has the power to now bring cases against employer. So. As long as you're, you're has. At least fifteen employees, you can take advantage of barrow EEO laws that are found in titled coven of the Civil Rights Act of nineteen sixty four the Americans but disability act as discrimination, and employment act and a few of a newer ones, but though there are pretty much the largest Lun but fifty about fifty percent of all wings ball. The EU are retaliation clean. And so what usually happens me? My clients is they'll come to me with the initial hey, become being discriminated against because a race or sex. But by the time I get involve, I always set the employer up for repel each trip. So the retaliation claims tend to be, stronger and more straightforward than the underlying discrimination claim Pistilli raise claim are the we've successful. To provoke actually make it through and get settled. Always the lowest amount, this country's still does not like to admit that we have racial tensions and issue in country in a workplace anywhere. Really? So, yes, EEO definitely helps you have to your Queen bee ever better twain that you want some kind of help on, do you ever want to have a remedy for that? I have is a bit too EEOC. So when you have exhausted all possible opportunity, Katha one go back to a work environment or to enter into a contract for settlement when it time to take into the legal you gonna have to go through the EEOC butters, unless there's a steak process that you prefer to go through, and usually, your state agency, our partners that the EEOC and so what's the time limit? Because I know for tech. Because there's the state partner we get three hundred days from the last offense. Yeah. So generally the better the go one hundred eighty days because of these partnerships, and depending on whether or not he worked for state government or whatnot. It could be extended three hundred eight but in five, the law, the very first, and most important in will common timeframe statute of limitations is what we call it is the one hundred eighty days. And with all those important to know is all stuff that you want included. The claim make sure that falls within your one eighty days. Let's say you get fired on December thirty first, but they were also treating you like crap, you know, seven months prior to that, if you fall on December thirty first she could go back for the past six months. But maybe that they happen earlier in the year, we won't be able to include the claim per se. But you get certainly use it as additional evidence that things were going. Why? Okay. That's good to know. But this is why documentation is so important. Documentation is really important. What I'm practicing our vilified it about the EEOC, and there are fabulous advocates who work for the EEOC, however emperor, your expectations. Because especially at the intake level, you were not talking to attorney. And the frustration thing about that is, all of these little back that you think are really important. They're doing a couple of things they could over eighty thousand claims they are underresourced. They are understaffed. They can't take all those. So with the view looking for their weekly for cases it, they are going to take everybody else is gonna get a piece of paper saying that they can take the case on their own. So if the EEOC is in jumping up and down about your case, don't be this courage, just know is impossible for them to really take all of those cases. However, is my vision that my information we're gonna flood the EEOC with so many claim they're going to be forced to get some more resources. I love that vision because they definitely do need resources. I can attest to that. I've seen it of been in the Dallas EEOC office, and it was bare bones. Staffing, and I'm like, oh my God. I can't imagine how many people come here every day, and it's only a handful y'all in it's just a it's too much is too much. Yeah, it's crazy. But I was gonna ask you when it comes to the EEOC documenting to prepare for that path. What is the biggest mistake you see employees doing that sometimes you don't catch him in time? Kai-ming from when they start documenting. So if you wanna have it miserable pizza evidence that is not inadmissible, the truth of the court of always that backed that the court always really wants to look at it. How accurate is your account and there are a lot of being built into the rules of evidence the kind of checked it, but I feel a lot of employees getting to the end. Of all the issues and sitting down and trying to document everything really when something happens. They made a documented within about nine minutes. Okay. Within nine minutes because your memories rash. You're gonna catch the details that you won't remember leader on Donna road. Another thing that you need to look for your documenting is pay attention to the people who were involved and also the people who are not involved, new people who are not involved are usually, the people being treated better than you. So that is going to be really important information because the EEOC is going to want to know who are your comparators, who can we point to in organization who's in your same or similar position being treated differently than you in your outside of your particular class, because we talked earlier, about direct evidence and how hard that is the come by a very complicated game. But allows you to prove a certain things using indirect evidence in a huge part of the indirect evidence is comparing how you're treated versus somebody who outside of your class. Okay. That's good to know. So don't get frustrated when you see Bob and Becky being taken to lunch. When you see Bob in Becky get to do that special project for the VP when you see Bob in Becky get to go to professional development events. And you knew nothing about it just write it down. Really excited drifted down. Yes. Right. Love that. Present your attorney get excited. Like, oh, yes, I love it. Oh, yes. I love that kind of stuff, people, you should not be happy about this. I know in a bag and we are putting together such an airtight king that even if the EU doesn't jump at it. Just the prospect of us winning in court is going to pressure the employer to settle. So it's important to have these solid cases built. Why are you getting paycheck that their paycheck, the hiring attorney, and they know she's here collecting evidence, over paying her Tate, Trini, you know, a lot of times imploring flip out and some of my highest cases, you know, speakers offers have come because the people inside the workplace got so emotional, soap it up. They fired them. We knew there was all you have to write me a chance. Hey man, write checks. If we got to go through this bullshit. Ladies and lease. Let us get some checks. I try to you for the corporation and now I do they write me Jackson. Right, jackson. I'm Bob boys. Oh, yeah. Yet. Oh my God. Arthur, Brooks takes on that question in a new essay in the Atlantic his research and data point to a pretty depressing conclusion that for most people in most fields, professional decline starts earlier years earlier than we've been led to sink. Arthur Brooks, welcome. Hi, mary. Louise, great to be with you. Great to have you with us before we get to the data. I was the president American Enterprise Institute of position that will have the next week and a half or so. A big thing tank wash big thing tank in Washington DC. It's great place. They peak out in their ability to do that high concentration mental work and tells us something about the way that the human brain works something that's very depressing at first, but it turns out that it can be eliminating. And even really encouraging, once you dig a little bit deeper, then you also found this varies actually pretty hugely across field. Right about the difference between something called a fluid intelligence and crystallized intelligence. That's right. So people start off their careers relying on their fluid intelligence that analytic speed our ability to figure stuff out fast. That's fluid intelligence at ten example. What what's your job? Oh, a lawyer, for example, if you're in any sort of business early on. I mean it's just like clicking clicking fast. That's something that will distinguish you that will set you apart that will make it possible for you to succeed in a big way. The problem is that, that fluid intelligence naturally starts to decline and precipitously. So starting in one's early thirties, and that's the reason that lawyers will feel in their forties and fifties. They'll notice they've this to step now, landed wisdom does that does the important things to the point, they're making people will rage against the decline in their fluid intelligence, but, but they're missing something really big, which is that curve may be going down with us another curve that's going up. That's called crystallized intelligence. That's your stock wisdom that the vast library, that you're accumulating all the books in your library, that are your mind and your Billy to use them with wisdom. That increases through your forties, and fifties and sixties and stays high. If you've got your marble through your seventies, and eighties, and that's what you need to rely on you need. Here's the key. Here's the trick, mary-louise, you gotta stop being an innovator and start being an instructor and instruct an instructor is somebody who synthesizes ideas and expresses them in new and interesting ways that people can understand that enriches other people that you can bring other people could literally be a teacher, but stop trying to achieve. Nobel prize winning paper and start thinking about how others have done things and how the patterns all come together that is truly one of the great strategies of the happiest people who've ever lived. So how has all this shaking up for you? We mentioned you are head of a big DC think-tank Enterprise Institute doing great. You're how old if I may ask fifty five just turned fifty five years old. Congratulations. Thank you very much. How are you applying this to you? I started this project because I wanted to know what I should do by about the age of fifty five and I determined that it was after about ten years in my position as chief executive American Enterprise Institute. It's important to move into something else and hand the keys over to somebody else. A new president will be taking over starting July first and I'm going to go to Harvard and teach at the Kennedy School and Harvard Business School and work with students and write books and life is sweet. And I can't wait. Arthur Brooks is outgoing president of the American Enterprise Institute, Technet about his article, your professional decline is coming much sooner than you think or through Brooks. Thank you. Thank you. Mary louise. It's been nearly five months since Venezuelan opposition leader, one Guido launched his campaign to nNcholas Maduro and take over as interim president all with US support throughout this campaign Guido has called attention to corruption in the Madero government. That's been going on for years now. Glide dough faces a corruption scandal of his own to tell us about it. We are joined by NPR's, Philip Reeve's. He was recently in Venezuela. And is now back at his base in Rio de Janeiro. Hi, phil. Hi. So this corruption scandal involves allegations not against quite himself, but against two of his party officials. Tell us about them. Yes. Sleeping on a by the post, it's a website based in Miami that office news and commentary from the Americas and it actually supports quavo. It's published a story about to officials from Guido's potty, this alleges that these two officials misappropriated funds and squandered many thousands of dollars on hotels, nightclubs clothes, and other luxuries. The story says that these two did this in Colombia, whether we're in charge of managing some of the funds sent to support the hundreds of Venezuela security forces who've abandoned the dodo and crossed out from Venezuela into the border city of Kukhta. The desert is studied. I'm sure you remember because you were there. I think deserters. Right now, leads started arriving in February that been living in hotels that being difficulties of who pays that bills, and one of the pen, on post allegations, is that one of these two officials Kai-ming back money from quite as administration, the hotels, though, we're actually being paid for by the Colombian government will by the UN refugee agency. How damaging is this to glider who, as we mentioned, has waged this campaign based on the fact that his opponent is corrupt? He alleges. Yeah, I mean, the Mont money involved is tiny in comparison with the massive sums that officials from the Madonna government, a widely known to pillow and of the is. But, you know, this is damaging Guido and the US, who supported his bid to take PA throughout lay. Great emphasis on the fact that he's, you know, he's a newcomer to Venezuelan politics, a young man, untarnished by Venezuela's, endemic corruption, who's then to clean the place up. This also think undermine skunk. Why does efforts to persuade the military to switch sides? Which is critical. If the dodos eventually to full so right now. Gwen does doing, you know, a lot of damage control. He says he's asked Colombian prosecutors to investigate. And he's talking about full transparency. His officials are saying that this Nejedly misappropriated money wasn't in fact humanitarian aid to Venezuelans, but came from private donations. Interestingly, though, his own void Columbia, Columbia, quite his own void that says he began looking into this two months ago off to being tipped off by Colombian intelligence. So there is speculation that guate- may actually have known about this for while does, when Israeli military defectors are always vocal, what they said about the revelations that money that was supposed to support them was instead used to buy luxuries for the people who are overseeing them. Yeah. We'd been touch with one of them today. Who's clearly upset. He's highlighted the risks taken by Venezuela's military, and security personnel, being been mostly June June. When they decide to switch sides. Instance, you know, relatives back home hoping persecuted and sometimes imprisoned and tortured. However, this particular man, does continue to support Cuando. I should say that to NPR's.
