"Tennis .com and now we're going to move on to the women's draw Chris um well actually before we get onto that I just want to have a quick word quick word on British tennis British female players not having the best time of it at the moment there are going to be no British females in the main draw first time since 2009 uh that has happened at a Grand Slam very quickly any what your words kind of on this because there were quite a few in qualifying and and the second round of qualifying was almost just like a bloodbath wasn't it of for British for British hope this to me doesn't feel great particularly when we're going into the British grass court season and Wimbledon you just know the British press are going to be making a point of this yeah we don't have a headline player on the women's side and when you take away Rada Kani you really do notice there is such a big sort of void of players who it really is and um I think I've always had a bit of a bug bear when it comes to some of the British players who aren't willing to spend life on the tour as much as they should there are lots of tournaments that they could enter they don't enter and they there isn't the focus of getting the ranking up in the same way and they don't always apply the same level of enthusiasm and the same level of kind of um of their game when it comes to life on tour versus life in a team competition so I do really like the fact that Katie Bilt has been over in Asia at the ITF events picking up ranking points so that she can get herself into a situation where she can qualify for Wimbledon by right um so we do have some upper trajectories obviously Jodie Burridge probably would have got acceptance because there's been a lot of withdrawals um she's ranked about in the top 110 so there's a lot of people in a similar spot but it is a pretty sad state of affairs that for the first time since 2009 and with the legacy of kind of some of the players we've had that we're in a situation where there's no British representation and it's also sad that Paola Badosa uh is not going to be there can't catch a break can she no I know she just feel like she was picking up ahead of seam and yeah she's announced today on on social media she is out um with a stress fracture to her back so um yeah get well soon uh Paola but um she would have been your pick yeah absolutely I know don't worry one of my other sort of regular picks Kuda Metava is still is still firmly she's your banker firmly in my banker uh yeah um I mean we're talking about Kuda Metava we're talking about because that is where she is along with Igor Sviontek um Igor Sviontek she pulled out of her match with Rebecca in Rome I still feel like it's all very positive and optimistic about Sviontek's chances with French with the French Open I mean Chris since that happened has the gap between her as favorite with the chasing pack has that shortened for you or is it still kind of like this is Igor Sviontek's to lose all depends on her fitness I think she didn't say she was too concerned she made it quite clear that she was going to be in Paris she booked that flight um she was very chirpy at the draw ceremony but we've also seen a very chirpy Kujikova before she had to pull out of her first round is it the Rafa mentality of show no weakness to your competitors yeah I think it might be um I do think she did seem quite carefree though so I do I do think um it's okay and part of the reason why I have got some question marks is because you just don't know how serious it is because I think whatever happens you'd want to communicate as you say that you're going to be there um and that you're no questions about your participation um but she's got some stern tests you know in her section of the draw um there are some tricky players in the form of like Azarenkas there and Drescu's in that same um part of the draw Kujikova who's had the better of her a few times and a former champion here so I think it's it's not an easy draw but we've seen her come through tough draws before like at the US Open and then start to play her best tennis but it might be a bit of a case like Djokovic where you have to manage the injury as the tournament progresses yeah as you said there are some really stern tests there I mean it's amazing to have Azarenka and Drescu round one grand slam champion grand slam champion probably that is one of the pick of the ties on on either side of the draws it's a nightmare draw for them both you've got to feel like Bianca coming back from her injury Azarenka hasn't had the best clay season um that does scream it could go it could go long I think it's going to have some some edgy moments um but I think that will be a real blockbuster round one two grand slam champions drawn together um there's a few other very interesting matches there are you going to talk about Kai Kanepi being unseeded um and in the grand slam dangerous floater blah blah blah we've heard it all before Chris the world's most um well most uh dangerous floater I guess I can say in all grand slam draws the last thing you want to see especially if you're a big hit like Madison Keys because they can both soak up the speedy ball they really can and um I'm I think that would be a bit of fun to watch I'm not sure what would be the most pretty tennis at times um but Koko Goff that's where my real question is last year's finalist she's had a bit of a bit of a mixed bag of a clay season I've almost forgot that that happened actually um and yeah I'm I'm curious to see how she gets on all because Kalanina could be a round three opponent for her and obviously got to the final um in Rome yes she had to retire so I'm hoping that was more out of just being knackered from the amount of

"Match, just in the moment. I felt a little like had been hypnotized. It's fascinating. I love hearing. Somebody talk like that. It's so different, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, and I can't wait for the match. It feels to me like one that even if it's a straight set win for med that I will be fun. I agree. Yeah. So what about the women's tennis that we saw today? Well, in upset news, the book he's had marquette van drosha is the favorite against the number two seed arena sabalenka. So I suppose sabalenka's three set win for 6 6 three 6 one counts as an upset or does it count as the bookies a silly? I don't know, but anyway, a pretty remarkable win from arena sabalenka. This is, I mean, it's pretty remarkable what arena sub linkers doing full stop at this tournament, really. I mean, she served I think tenable faults today Matt, which is quite a quite a lot of double faults. And usually, usually, your whole game is built around your search, isn't it? If the serve isn't there, it causes you to lose faith in all the rest of your game. It literally shakes the foundations, doesn't it? But somehow she's containing the service yips to just her serve. She sort of hermetically sealed her serve from the rest of her game somehow and it's really quite incredible Matt. I'm all in on sabile Inca this tournament. I think it's one of the most interesting stories at this event. And look, we saw her break down in tears on the court, just at the start of the season when she was hitting a lot of double folds. And at the end of the match today, she joked about the number of double faults she hit. There has been a progression in the way she is viewing that it will faults even within the last couple of weeks, which is kind of extraordinary in itself. And I think you need to have the attitude she's got now in order to be able to overcome it. As you said, the way she is able to isolate it and manage it is incredible because, frankly, the rest of her game looks in really good shape. That's the cleanest, best I've seen sabalenka play in quite a while, I would say certainly the second and third set today I went out onto the court to watch them. And I thought she paid really, really well. And the ten double faults she hit, it's a lot, of course it's a lot, but 6 of them are in the first set, which she lost and two of them sort of came back to back in the third set. The rest of the time, the serve was actually not a huge issue for her. It's obviously caused a problem in the first set. And it's contributed to her losing that set. So it is a problem. But she got it under control, she managed it, and as I said, the rest of her game was contained. And she is now winning tight matches in slams, which used to be something she never really did. If she wasn't, if she wasn't blasting opponents off the court, she wasn't winning. It was a real Achilles heel for her. And this tournament she's done it three times in a row. It's sort of become a little trademark for her. And yeah, I thought I was so impressed and I went to a press conference and she took the energy that she displayed in that encore interview sort of joking and giggling about her game. She took it into the press conference where she was she was followed in by the Netflix cameras. And I mean, she just couldn't stop laughing about the whole thing. And she was really struggling to keep a straight face at the start of the press conference. And at one point, she turned to the cameras and smiled at them as well and she sort of seeing it all as I think that side of things she's taking it very seriously, but she's also sort of embracing it as well. And yeah, she she's a fascinating story this tournament's avalanche of what she's, what she's doing, how is she doing it? And I should say full sabalenka exchange schles grilling on the serve to be found in the newsletter. Link is the details of how to subscribe to that are in our show notes. She'll face Ozzy no Kai kanepi next to beat Aussie wildcard Maddie English two 6 6 two 6 love can be of course the fourth round of Islam with off the back of absolutely no form whatsoever. So that'll be an interesting one. For the next portion of the podcast, you're not going to be hearing much from me because we'll be covering matches that took place while I was asleep. We're recording this podcast a little earlier than we recorded last night's in order to try and get my body clock into some semblance of a healthy place because I woke up at two 45 p.m. today, folks, and that is what happens when I don't set an alarm and full disclosure. I only woke up because I heard you leaving the house, Matt. I don't know what would have happened. I did it. I know. I mean, who knows? I might still be asleep now. Went to sleep at about 4 a.m. thinking, well, there's no need to set an alarm, you know, I'll get as much sleep as my body will allow me. Two 45 p.m.. So I woke up at similar time scattering. We did. We did. I will no matter what hour of the day I go to sleep, I will be setting an alarm from now on. So I managed to sleep through what might have been the match of the day, actually, Danielle Collins, beating Clara Towson, please. Please tell me what happened. I think it was the match of the day. It was great. They spent the first two sets. I actually think they each won the set that the other probably should have won thousand was down in the first set and wheeled off 5 straight games, I think, to win it. And then was really in control and looked very smooth. It was the first I've not watched a lot of Taos and I've seen it play before, but this was this was really striking to me how poised she is on the court and composed and doesn't get flustered. And she was really in control of this match, then up a break in the second set, which is why I think she probably should have won the second set and Collins did what Collins does and dug in and fought and made it a match and stole the second set, really, and then the third set was close all the way. I thought Collins was the better player throughout. But they weren't the brakes have served that they were in the first two sets. And then it all just sort of reached this amazing crescendo where Colin set up a couple of match points with the most stunning forehand passing shot just right onto the baseline at full stretch. It was brilliant. And then Towson just responded with a brilliant point of our own to save match point, so composed big backhand down the line. And yeah, there was just this contrast in styles in terms of, you know, you've got animated versus unanimated loud versus quiet and yet they were both hitting big from the baseline. It was a sort of personality contrast, but game wise, you know, it was kind of similar. And then to win it, you just felt like someone was going to have to come up with something brilliant because they were both playing well and it's exactly what Collins did to backhand return winners to clinch the match one down the line, one cross court at a sort of impossible angle. I don't think she thought it was in because it was such an acute angle she found on the return and yeah it was a great, great match and battle and.
