How To Be An Anti-Casteist

"Warner. We started talking about cast with Lauren Freyer. This is Lauren NPR's India correspondent who started thinking about cast and race in part because of an initiative at NPR to track the diversity of sources. This is something we all know do including this podcast. We will note how many women were putting on the air, how many people of Color and other demographic stats I see my company trying to better represent America with the voices we put on the air and I'm looking at my own sourcing and I get too much credit. Every voice I bring to the airwaves from India as a person of color check the box you know that's diversity from my boss' point of view but I'm looking at different types of diversity in India and thinking. CAST. You see it in India when it comes to. Arranged marriages, dating APPS, you see it in real estate I mean there are subtle ways in which landlords choose tenants and signal to tenants. That certain cats are welcome or not welcome. There is no uncontroversial way to talk about cast and even the words we use are fraud. You're going to hear people in this story talk about upper caste and lower caste. We're GONNA try to avoid those hierarchies and say dominant cast at oppressed caste oppression is a strong term, but it definitely applies here. This is oppression that's gone back centuries. It was really amplified by the British. So British colonists came in and gave Brahmins privileges elevated them and exploited this power differential between the BRAHMINS and other castes and when Indians won their independence in nineteen forty seven, they wrote a constitution that acknowledges that oppression and lays out bold measures to try to fix it affirmative action programs to place dollars in government jobs to play dollars, its top universities, and all of that exists in India still today. But despite all of this dalits in India face so much violence disproportionate violence Daulat women are raped more than women of other Castes Dalit men get lynched for falling in love with dominant caste woman lauren knew she wanted to find out peoples cast to make sure she was hearing from variety of voices including people who don't always get access to speak. But. This broad a new problem. How actually do you find out? SOMEONE'S CAST? So Good question. How does one person Oh you're cast light it is not like you have a color which gives away your identity. Same Cornelia says, sometimes, it's easy. You just read someone's cast by their surname sometimes you cannot hide and how about your real surname is it easy to hide your? Name doesn't go my cost us a k. that this wife immediately when I only seven, they will ask me whole willing come from which part of the state you come from. There had to ask a follow up question. If you can't tell by surname, you can ask about someone's neighborhood are also tried to be clever I come from Hyderabad slow from Hyderabad. It's the city of nine million people all casts are there. So that's the people are not satisfied if you do named. So what they do is no, no. No. I'm not talking about with city you come from willow would your parents which relates Came from Sam keeps dodging the real question might played into used to stay in Bombay. Can. Actually before that, my father used to work. So he was daily. You just keep naming, cities. Because that is the facts also, then they will. They will understand that I'm playing around to the. Sam Doesn't want to reveal his cast because most of his Indian coworkers from dominant castes in fact, the overwhelming majority of south, Asians in America from dominant castes. They're often the ones with the resources and access to get here. The other portion usually people ask is already which. Because Brahman Salvage. Aliens. If you say. If you are in. A crisis of comedies at the box office

"KCRW sponsors include Universal Pictures, presenting the new movie yesterday, would, if you were the only person that remembered, the Beatles ever existed, from the director of Slumdog millionaire and the writer of love actually yesterday in theaters Friday, June twenty eighth. I Matt Bellamy filling in for Kim masters, and this is the Hollywood breakdown. Joining me is Brooks, Barnes of the New York Times, and Brooks were dealing with somewhat of a crisis in a certain corner of Hollywood and that is the corner that makes comedies for theatrical distribution. These are movie comedies, and this summer one after another has just been flopping in theaters this past weekend, late night, a very heralded comedy starring and written by Mindy. Kaeling was a total flop five million in many thousand theaters. And it was bought for thirteen million at the Sundance film festival in January, so Amazon, which bought the film, and then released it had big hopes for this movie didn't work. Out what's going on? You know, when you look at that graph teach are published about comedy over the last decade is just like hits you in the face. It's like from two point five billion in two thousand nine to one billion last year. I mean is just a precipitous drop. And so there couple of things that are across the board. Right. The rise of streaming. But I think they're also things specifically about these movies about late night. For example, has some very movie by movie reasons that things aren't going. Well, yeah, I look at the movies that have not done well, this summer, and there have been some studio comedies, like palms which was a an older, female or ended film cheerleaders. And there was long shot, which was a Seth Rogan Charlie's Theran comedy that a while ago you would have thought it would be in the vein of knocked up, which made hundreds of millions of dollars. And it totally flopped, and then book smart was a smaller comedy that got amazing reviews and no one showed up. So I think there's something is going. On. And I think it has to do with this devaluation of the theatrical experience, increasingly movie, goers are saying, we want the biggest the most expensive the event films in theaters and the rest, you know what? Maybe we'll wait for streaming. Yeah. It's not that streaming Netflix has trained people to look for comedy at home necessarily, not in theaters. It's that streaming has trained us to expect exe- entertainment. You know, at highlights the expense, and hassle of going to the theater across the board and the studios aren't blameless, here, either because consequentially they have focused on making these international tent poles and the knock on comedy is at sometimes it is America specific, the stars and the comedy doesn't travel as well overseas. So I think when you're thinking about these mid budget comedies that used to be a stable of the studios. They just aren't willing to make those bets anymore. And Seth Rogan Charlene Darren can't bring people to. The theater who can well late night. You know, there are a couple of things people haven't talked about much. I'll take the bullet one of them. One of them is that Mindy Kaeling is not a movie star. She's an enormously talented, actress and writer, but audiences don't seem to. She doesn't seem to be a draw in theaters which kind of brings us back to that streaming question at the beginning, right? What gets us out of our home to pay for all that popcorn and a babysitter and parking and all of that. And the and the other thing is that when you look at Amazon, this is their tenth release and there's not one of those, that's worked, I guess, maybe Cold War. Foreign film at about four point five million dollars, but you know, they don't seem to know what they're doing with these movie releases and the irony here is that there was a movie star, two of them actually that had a release last weekend, and it was Jennifer, Aniston and Adam Sandler in a Netflix movie that premiered exclusively on Netflix. And while the critics didn't like it. Netflix, put out, one of their periodic audience boasts on Monday saying, thirty million accounts access the film, which, as we've noted many times that is not verified by any outside auditing service. But it shows that people. Were interested in a comedy last weekend. They just weren't interested in going to the theater. And that's right. And the other thing that those Netflix numbers, they say, it's how many accounts watched seventy percent of the title. And so I don't know about you, but I often find myself in the other room with Netflix running the living room, so who many people are actually watching. I don't know. But the interest is, is the key point like you said and that comes from big stars. That's New York Times reporter Brooks Barnes. He joins me this Monday at one thirty on the business. I'm Matt Bellamy. And this is the Hollywood breakdown.

Emma Thompson talks new movie and

"Thomson she's in a movie called late night. It opens this weekend. She also took on a Hollywood titan who has fired for sexual harassment and then quickly got another job and late night. Thompson plays opposite Mindy Kaeling. She also wrote the movie Mindy Kaeling script was one of those strange things immediately, good upon first reading just great. She had a good idea. And she really knew how to bring in for you. That's a. Plus, she said, I wrote it for you. So of course, you haul things, anything God is going to be bad going to be bad, because it's not going away anytime soon being earnest and kind so luckily, I wasn't I was in a blazer with looked back here being incredibly mean most of the time journal, just had our second baby Taylor adorable. She takes to you. Thanks, so there's just a lot of expenses at home right now and I think it's time for a race. I see. This is actually very exciting to be really great because what you're describing is the most clear out example of the classic sexist argument for the advancement of men in the workplace you're asking for raise not because of any work related contribution. You've made but simply because you have a family, and that's why in the nineteen fifties family men were promoted over the women. They worked with never encountered is in such a clean teachable way. How would you describe Catharine Newbury? She is a late night host. She is successful. But maybe the future doesn't look as bright. Well, she's someone who was so driven right from a very early age. We did shoot a little bit of heart doing stand up in London. And when she was very young. And actually, we used my stand up from tally, the I did in nineteen forty five. I remember when forty six can't come on and. I remember so clearly that feeling of whenever I did stand up in my twenty s of being one of certainty. If not the only woman, then one of two amongst great load of men, who were often quite standoffish didn't clearly, expect anything view, so. Spoke to me on every level, we took that piece out because it just didn't help with the story actually in the end. But Mindy understands that, she understands what it's like to be the one who's different not only because of being a woman, but also being a person of color in a fuel the only one you're going to feel different, and that's not comfortable, a lot of the time, it just simply isn't comfortable, and we're not very honest about not. I don't think and she's only about it. She was a diversity higher. She's written about someone who was a diversity. I if that hadn't happened, maybe we wouldn't have this movie. So go, diversity reactively talked to the director of the film Nisha Ghana Tra and she talked about Catherine, as one of those women who came up in the entertainment business. When women were made to believe that other women were their adversaries, not their allies. They were sold this idea that there's only room at the table for one. And if you're here, then you better make sure nobody threatens your position here. And any other women coming up may have been seen as a threat to that position rather than adding to the workforce. And so I think what I love about this movie. Is it sort of breaks up myth? Yeah. I wonder if just women who had, I don't think of men is being enormously generous and warm, too young men, who coming up and might take their position. I think that it might be not only women but just the nature of the power structures that we have created. Do you know what I mean? Like I didn't think of, of blogs coming into writing room and everyone going. Hey, your great. You're a young thrusting blood, a guy like me. I can't wait to give you some extra airtime. I didn't think that happens with mine, iza. And I think that's a problem of power. Right. But I think there's something more to what Nisha sane. And that is that if you're a woman coming up that you are so aware of how limited the opportunities are obsolete that you start to see other women not as your peers. But as your. Arrivals, and that becomes an inch hawk sake. Talk sake. Absolutely. The, the conditions of power do not make it possible, especially for people who find it difficult to get into that position in the first place to be generous will be welcoming will be mentoring or want to help. Movie that you chose not to make. And this is the animated film luck that was at sky dance, which is David Ellison's company animation comedy, paramount and you decided not to make it because guy dance had hired John Lasseter has been fired from Pixar for the way that he treated women. And you wrote a letter that I have described on the air as the Magna Carta of the metoo movement, is one of the most beautiful eloquent, and well argued letters about this whole notion of the way women are treated the way men are forgiven that I found profound, and I hope you would share these two paragraphs with with us right now too. If a man has been touching women inappropriately for decades. Why would a woman want to work for him? If the only reason he's not touching them inappropriately now is that it says in his contract that he must behave professionally. If a man has made women his companies feel undivided and disrespected for decades. Why should the women at his new company think that any respect he shows them is anything other than an act that he's required to perform by his coach his therapist and his employment agreement. The message seems to be I am learning to feel respect for women. So please be patient, while I work on it. It's not easy. What motivated you to write it? What gave you the ability to write it. Very good questions. When I left the production, and then I wrote to Lindsey Durand about it, and in these one of the most brilliant, women, I know, said, Phil, can you talk to some women about this? I'd really be interested to know what's going on. And in fact, that letter is the work of many voices is not just my voice because those questions, very much came from those women. So the dots what's wonderful about it is that it is a collective voice, and I sent it to sky downs and didn't receive a reply, and because I showed it was quite a lot of people because of the issue, being very pressing, a lot of just as you go to publish it, and that was quite a big decision because it's just a public, but the. Vision turned out to be the right one because. Those with the questions that needed to be oft and to this date of not been onset in any way. I've had no response public or personal back from sky don's an dots very disappointing. Because they only way we're going to get anywhere with this own going issue is by talking to each other. It's not just a public thing to do its thing that potentially, and this is what has happened over the last couple of decades, that has kept women silent is they fear that they will be punished that they will be blackballed. They won't get parts that people will rise. They're absolutely really. Why were you able to I'm sixty on thought too old not to woke my own talk time is very much marching on. And because I had spoke to not before when the Weinstein thing blew up, and I've always spoken about this. I was young woman. I'm there was up -solutely, no choice really. And what was interesting to me in very touching was responses. I got from so many people male and female, who had done the same thing who would walk away and who don't have. Perhaps, don't feel as stoppage does I feel you know, I couldn't do other things. It's not going to kill my career even if sky don'ts, says, we're never going to work with you again, and we're going to tell every other animation, but I don't think that that would be possible now because the do feel that with the metoo time's up moving. There is a tipping point. But we do have to keep on, and on one of the ways in which I think we're going to have to do that. We got to talk to people before during, and after film shoots the thing, the clever thing about anybody who's going to bully. Is that they'll do it, not in front of someone who's going to say you can't do that? They'll do it in secret or in quiet or in private. And it's very difficult, for instance, for someone who's a runner, and who can be replaced in five minutes to say anything, bad about someone who will cost a lot of money to replace an all of these things. They have implications for everyone.

Summer Movie Preview

"The movies of summer twenty nineteen. What is out there? What's going to happen? And I've got to start by saying you think maybe that summer begins on your calendar near the end of June. But not in Hollywood everything in Hollywood begins early because summer is when they make all the money that they can make all year. So officially April twenty six it's the beginning of summer because the movie that opens on that day is called a ventures endgame. This is three hours long. Nobody's gonna care. I predict that not only will this be the biggest box office hit of the summer, but it will be the biggest box office hit of the year. You remember what happened last time all the ventures or at least half of them seem to turn to dust than die mean? Now have those ventures that are left to signing if they can beat the evil fan. He so evil will the adventures be wiped out forever. Look how much money did these movies make I'm saying why would you basically kill the golden goose? This is going to continue in some way, we all know it. So what else is out there? I'm looking at my list. There's a major thing going on now of in terms of taking the Disney slash Pixar animated classics and turning them into live action movies. So we have The Lion King line king. One of the most successful Disney animated movies ever is now being done as a live action movie. You have Donald Glover being Simba. You have James Earl Jones actually being this father and the same scores. They're the same using. And it's directed by John Fabbro who did such a great job with the jungle book doing the same thing that I think we can all feel optimistic about what's going to happen. And then we have Aladdin when we remember the. Animated movie who do we remember the most? We remember Robin Williams doing the voice of the genie. This time doing the voice of the genie and being the genie. We have Will Smith. So big stars in this big kind of thing, they tried it with Dumbo earlier this year, and that didn't quite work the way they wanted to do. But we're talking about lying king and the Ladan so big deal. Now, what terms of old fashioned animation is out there. I don't know if you're like me. But there's a Toy Story four toy stories always been my favorite of those Pixar. There's something about Woody and buzz light year, and you're probably saying to yourself. Well, and Toy Story three didn't it happen. That would he said goodbye, Andy. And he went to college, and it was all over remember. There was little Bonnie Andy gave his toys too. So we're going to have little Bo peep comeback. I think when you look at what goes on in Toy Story, you have that kind of feeling of goodness of field. Goodness, but done with all the magic of Pixar. So if those adventures out there are going to have a run for their box office money. I would say Toy Story. Four is going to be the one that does it. So what else we now have men in black men in black international? You're not gonna see Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones anymore. But this time you have Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. As new agents who are out there in this men in black universe. Sometimes you say to yourself do I want more of that? And you never know to actually see it. And I can only tell because I haven't seen this movie yet. But it looks like there's chemistry there. Then we have Spiderman far from home. You know, the Spiderman franchise never seems to end either. But we have Tom Holland who played him last time charmingly, I think, but now spider man, Peter Parker. They're taking a European vacation and the villain that they run up against is mysterious. Played by Jake Jilin. All I just think they're still some special sauce in the Spiderman universe, and I expect this one to also be a major hit. Godzilla Godzilla king of the monsters. I see that. And I go how much can they work this poor God's, but you can look at the trailer and see it. I like the idea that aside from viewer for Megan who is in it, Billy Bobby Brown from stranger things is in its she the dynamo. So if God Zillah can basically meet his match betting on little Millie to do something with that Hobbes and Shaw, this is fast and the furious you remember the rock of playing the the law man, and Jason stefon playing the outcast and the rebel these guys. I don't know if this is Hollywood kind of thing, but they tell us that Jason stadium and the rocked wing Johnson. Don't really like each other. And maybe that what the reason we love these characters and show so much because we liked that conflict. I don't know it seems a PR stunt to me, but I'm going to be there because this cars. There's the rock and their Stefa. So you're going to be there to and you know, it, oh and the big deal. Now, everybody has just in the midst of welcoming game of thrones back to their lives. The last season of that. You can't bear to live in a world where you can't see the stark sisters anymore. Well, now, you can dark Phoenix, which is part of the X men universe. Bring Sophie Turner, and she's Jean grey this character that we've seen before. But she's this younger version of her and she split between the good side of her and the dark Phoenix side of her. And to me, these girls are tremendously talented in what they do on game of thrones. And I think we're going to keep seeing them through the years, but her sister her at least game of thrones sister, maisy Williams is in new mutants part of that universe too. But in this case, they're all new characters to do this. They're all gonna be in the X men universe. Doing it. So that's it for the blockbusters that are out there. You've got everything from animation to comic book characters to everything. And that's the stuff that you hear about that your friends are going to talk to you about. But there's gotta be other stuff to part of summer is comedy of. I think we all really have gone through a long winter. And we're saying make us laugh give us something that will just make say, whatever. I can just sit back and not think. So what's there for that? There's a movie called longshot. This is a movie in which Charlotte Theran is playing the secretary of state who is running for president. But falling Manley in love with who staff throw in. Okay. It's like, a beauty and the beasts thing going on here. Seth Rogan is her speechwriter all of her people say what are you doing? You're going to destroy your career. But no, it's love. And if you don't laugh at the combination of Seth Rogan, Charlie staring. There's nothing left for you. And then we have the hustle. The hustle is a movie that used to be called dirty run scoundrels where the old days it was about conman. Now, it's con- women. They're played by Anne Hathaway and rebel Wilson. And they basically go all cross the continent finding rich people whose money they can steal pretty people. Glamour? What's wrong with that? Oh, book smart. This is directed by the actress Olivia Wilde, and it's about girls graduating from high school and saying we spent all our lives with our head in the books. Everybody else is going to parties and having fun. So they're going to do that beanie Feldstein plays one of them. She is the sister of Jonah hill and real life and Jona hill did super bad. This is kind of the women's version of super bad everything in it works, like a charm. You're really going to like that one. Then we have a movie called late night. This is about the TV talk show world and Emma Thompson plays. Probably the only woman on late night TV who hosts her own show, but she's got only men on her writing staff, and then she hires Mindy Kaeling who also wrote the screenplay of this movie, very very funny about what happens when you put women into what basically has been. A male bass they end of doing this. And the combination of Mindy king writing for the great Emma Thompson and watching them perform together is just so you've got to see that one to my favorite kind of thing. The dead. Don't die. You've got to admit that is a great and funny title. It comes from the indie, directing great, Jim Jarmusch. And it's cut people like Bill Murray and Adam driver by zombies. Okay. If Bill Murray is going to go out there and get laughs. Sizing up zombies. I'm going to be there watching him do it. So we have a good chance for laughs horror. I've got to talk about it now because it's not just the Cajun. Oh movie harm movie that makes money any makes people talk and get happy. It's they're everywhere. Now child's play do you? Remember the old child's play movies where you had Chucky. The crazy nut doll that. Always terrified me. Just. This doll who looks kind of little bit weird and freckly, but he has a voice on him like a longshoreman guess who's doing the west now of Chucky Marquel? Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker. And from what I've seen of it in. It's just been a little bit of it. It's wonderfully malevolent, so I'm going to be there to see that one. Then there's Annabel comes home. Another doll another possess doll also part of the conjuring universe where a viewer for Megan Patrick Wilson. Or the demon knowledge is that tried to make sure that nothing bad can come of this horrible doll Annabelle, but Bill will destroy and I will be there to watch her. Do it then them that follow their certain titles that get me them that follow really gets me? And it's about a snake handling church in Appalachia. No, they there are there colts. And they're almost religious cult where people pray. But they have the snakes, and they hold the life thinks pass them on. And you're thinking, what are you tell me about this like CD movie Har movie will guess who the star of this movie is the freshly minted Oscar winner Ogilby Coleman from the favourite, she's tossing those snakes around so irresistible. I think you're gonna love it. Then there's the Nightingale. See it's does not stop. It's har- everywhere. The night and gas from the director, Jennifer Kent who did a thing a couple of years ago called the baba Duke, which gave millions of people nightmares. And now she's back there following a woman who is chasing a convict got to be hooked. And then midsummer midsummer directed by REI Astor who last year gave us hereditary with Toni Collette, a really scary movie. Now, it's at a nine day Swedish holiday where everybody celebrates. But they'll be no celebrating after this one. So we. Got a lot of stuff out there. That's just going to scare us witless. And I couldn't be happier. All right. When summer comes. So I'm going to read some quotes about friendship from TV and Angela has to guess what? Show. It's from it's game. We call the test of friends are you ready to play? Yes. All right here, we go. You know, what sucks about getting older? Your friends have known you for way too long. They've got too much on you. I want French who still lie to me because they don't want to hurt my feelings. I sadly, kind of mean that. Can have a hint. Yeah. One of the characters in the show was an elf the movie elf, oh, what will Ferrell's audition hill? I don't know you tell me. Oh, new girl new girl. There you go that was Nick Miller from new girl. Okay. All right next up. We made a deal ages ago men babies, it doesn't matter worse. Oh mates. I know this one sex in the city, how the F did you know, that you are crazy. How do you know that quote, I think that wasn't the trailer? And I it was Samantha right? Yeah. I just hear her saying over like, we're we're soulmates like she's holding a MARTINI glass. Oh my God. You're so good. Your brain is crazy. Your brain is crazy. I love that. You remember the sex and the city trailer from God knows how many years ago. All right. Next up a best friend is a person, Danny? It's a tear. What aren't even know what that means? I don't know either. I really don't hear like T E A R I E R O. I really I don't know. I don't know can hit. Danny is the characters name. How do I give hints about this? "You write a little bit about other figures, including Kaeling Kristen week, Amy Poehler, you give shout out to though, I don't think the two of you have worked together. We did. They just that what? Now because they came together. I just they came together. Which is David Wayne movie. I was in one scene. And so I got to sit across the table from her. So yes that magic Alex. And I think you tried out for parks and rec is that right? Yeah. I think that's what I was. I think for before the office. So it seems. It worked out for you. Are there are there folks that just comedic Lee you kind of look to for inspiration whether current or or pass ones I love? Well. Yes, there are so many women. I want to say that my favorite show for so long was the Mindy project. I'm sad. It's off. That's so funny. And it's so many. It's her voice singular Mindy. I love it. The jokes are so good on that show. I as growing up, I loved Seinfeld. And and people will ask, oh, we live Seinfeld. What was it about the Elaine character that you love what I love is that it wasn't an issue that she I mean when people talk about being a woman in comedy and succeeding in spite of that. It's again, that's the part that is. So why are you bringing up his shoes away? I never thought twice about the fact that lane was a woman she was just in the gang with the rest of them. But I yeah, Seinfeld was probably the show. We watched the most growing up. I was just gonna say one of the things I loved about. It was none of them were redeemed -able. And and Elaine was no softer than the guy. I loved that. And I loved watching as I mentioned from the mid west. Maybe we're a little polite there. I love watching this lady who would get mad who would chef people who would not always be polite. Even though she sometimes aim to be, but no they were all. Mike Lindell to George. Oh, yeah. She was tough. She was a very tough comedic character. Are there are are there mill characters you'll look for for inspiration or you actors comic actors comedians, if you're like, you know, pull a little bit of that there. Oh, I you know, who I well. I'll just say who makes me laugh is John Mullany. I think he's so Nick Kroll. I think those guys are so funny. I Barron halts who's on many product is hilarious. There's there's. Yes, there's so it's not often that you laugh out loud. But those guys always make me laugh out loud. Kemper you were if I recall correctly in an intern at Conan O'Brien's show. I think back when he's on NBC, correct? The Lum night roster. There's insane. What's what's with the culture there? I don't know. Yeah. A lot of people from the office came from their Mindy and turn their John Krasinski Angela Kinsey, I think everyone interned there. I don't know. What that is. I have no idea. What that is. But he's like a sorry and ripping he like inspires a certain kind of loyalty from folks who've worked for him. And also my senses for people in the world of comedy. Even if he, you know, isn't the tonight show host or isn't something else. Like people look at him and say, this guy really has a sense of who he is..

"And justin. Man. These conversations will be spoiler filled and may contain objectionable language. Favor. Mouth again. Listener discretion is advised. On. Today. We're discussing wreck it Ralph starring John C Reilly Sarah Silverman. Jack, mcbrayer, Jane Lynch Allen to Mindy Kaeling, Joel trueblue Ed O'Neill as bird eighty mclernon because it's really easy to get a big voice cast directed by rich Moore. This is your co host of now playing review at Arnie, and I've got to review it and Stewart without his children or the candy corn. And this is the podcast or with the most tragic backstory ever programmed Justin yet, you mention your children of the candy corn. I almost feel like I needed to adopt imaginary children because here we are. We added brief discussion of line. This isn't our first Disney film. But it feels like it. It's our first Disney original film. Big hero. Six was a Disney film. But it was a Disney film adapted from a marvel property as much as they'd like to try to make us. Forget that. Now, that's a TV show on the Disney channel does that what happened to it? So no sequel good it did well enough to continue as a TV series without TJ Miller, but not good enough to do another movie. How would they even title that? Would it be big hero seven big hero six? The battle continues. Brecca routh breaks the internet. You know? But sure here we are in full Disneyland. And you know, I do not find it a world of magic in a world of cheers. I find it a world of saccharin commercialism. I just need to put my bias out at the start of the show. Here's my problem with Disney as not that I hate them. And I realize I'm coming from a place of questionable stability as a person with Star Wars and marvel tattoos. But I find their stuff to be so shallow and so- aimed at kids that watching it. I went back and tried to watch three to one contact which I remember being the edgy adult version of Sesame Street when I was a kid, you know, you started as street, then you had your electric company, and if you're really cool three to one contact it does not hold up that show only worked when they had of the bloodhound gang on it. I only like spider made on electric company. But I just think that all their stuff compared to Pixar and even compared to what Warner is doing to be so milk toast. And I just do not understand grown people who just love Disney and without kids. Want to go on Disney cruises and all of that. I referred to them as Disney. What's I just don't get it? It's an awfully big tapestry. You're throwing over Disney by saying that you don't like their product they've been around so long ninety years at this point. You hate everything. Snow White listen, it's not for me anymore. I want back every watched Peter Pan when we did hook. It's not for me anymore. I remember liking Aladdin for the Robin Williams stuff. But there's nothing that I would give beyond a passing glance, and yeah, you said it'd been around. Yeah. I love that we start with a pixellated steamboat Willie here. But I can't think of a Disney product that is not Pixar that is not marvel. That is not Lucasfilm that is not touchstone Miramax. Or some of their other subsidiaries any Disney cartoon that comes out for their time in the fifties. There animation was cutting edge. But they're storytelling its entire success is based upon a bland taste that brings in the most people imaginable there, the McDonald's of movie makers, and I'll go through a drive through once in a while. But nobody's gonna save that a quarter Pounder is gourmet. I can agree with you on that. Aren't you like I can see both sides? And I'll add to that that what Disney is is a slice of America. It's a microcosm of what being American is. You know, it's kinda homogeneously a little bit Christian, but without being preachy, and it's mostly white. And now that they've gotten older yester- trying to do some diversity in some of their things. But put a lot of that aside as a dad I've had kids growing up and neither one of them ever. Really latched onto Disney. Rory was never a Disney Princess type akin. Tyler didn't get into all these movies that were out about that time..

She agreed to do the movie right after girls trip came out, right? If she started getting famous and then by the time have been like, oh, I kept waiting for that phone call. She was like, hey, so I met Steven Spielberg and I gotta go like she kind of spearheaded the taking the cast into this small room on sentence sitting in this tiny room and talking and telling stories a lot shooting videos and she invited the whole cast DJ college birthday party at did he. "Has sorry sir she soldier this hershiser surrey suri i think it was her name in the film she was also in a really interesting but very dark episode of black nearer the final episode of the final season of the last season she she starred in that episode of black mirror cameras said the other thing i posted something about it months ago when she was doing the black panther tore you know she almost quit acting and it wasn't until she became a christian and she said that you know her faith gave her value outside of her career that she felt like she reengage it and then she started getting all these big roles now she could be a big player of the claw i'm that somehow but that's a cool story this is an aside but do we think because i've been seeing commercials for lali do we think oceans aid isn't be good commercials i gotta be honest i love all those actresses but it just doesn't have the zip ocean's eleven had either did the last ocean stuff the style you know it just doesn't have that the again trailers can be misleading it's true it's just i i don't know like i'm scared that it won't be that good i i at least think that it will be funny okay because the chance yeah yeah i think mindy kaeling is probably going to bring the laughs i just i'm such sandra bullock fan and she's like a pivotal at least in the commercial right yeah it's like she's really all right i'm going don't wanna see miskin genealogy for two hours.

"Scorsese your you know whoever so few women even making anything there's no there's not one i can look like that maybe on yes fired up but certainly no american woman filmmakers certainly not a black person period and and you know i look at spike lee's work and i see the time in his career when he was very supported in time in his career where the industry did not support him so you know it's it's it's it's it's tough when you don't have anyone to look at where you want to call there's no one for me to call on this movie to say how did you do how'd you navigate this issue i didn't do this person's giving you know how do you get around that or and so i look forward to being the person that someone can call one day because i know they'll be other women standing alongside me and so i if they don't call me i'll be calling them it it feels sounds like you like you you've got like a really tight network of amazing women by the way in the film and yes oh yeah the woman the film off very close yeah it's been tremendous to fill their love for the story you know race really so you know interest in a lot of the the the role organizing work of times up and so forth and hollywood and you know mindy kaeling like the southeast asian woman with she has a show with their name on it it's called mindy project you know when it is much love show there then you know oprah her whole empires built on ideas about treating people the way you want to be treated and being a good person and then we all just wrapped our arms around this girl storm reid who i love her so much i mean i just really have a deep deep love for her and really my highest hope my prayers that the industry takes care of her in the way that it's taken care of young caucasian actresses over the years like natalie portman or.

"As phone for young black women young women of color but they're always really hard and harsh i think now precious and and of pariah and just another girl in iot these films where women are really axe to overcome such huge things and sometime for black girls it's just about overcoming the things that every other girl is trying to overcome and i thought that was so important and i really love that do for native that in film i think also when you look at just you know the nuances of being a black ground singer self represented were axed to really identify with the harry potters in the kenneth evidence of the hunger games and we do but no one has ever asked to you know identify and see themselves and us so that was why a wrinkle in time was really so important i think yeah so i want to just hear a little bit more from the film this is a moment a little later on in the movie where the three mrs again and misses witch mrs what sitting mrs who will talk about them in more detail a little later but they leave meg and calvin and charles wallace whose meg's brother to fight darkness on on the evil planet and they give the children gifts in order to assist in their battle mrs who played by mindy kaeling gives mega pair of crystal magical glasses and reese witherspoon character mrs what's it who long has doubted megs core strength actually leaves her with surprising present they work well in a moment.
