"This is i think a hindrance to beyond aids insurance to arena if you experiencing life in a small way in a private way in a reluctant way how do you make a record. That's going to be received with. Like bugles how do you balance those two things. Because i think certain stars are at the place in their career where they may not have an option to release a small records that to me. Why the lord record jenin love. But i think it's pretty good but the lord was interesting to me because it was a choice. It was a choice to walk away from a certain aesthetic pathway in potentially some of the fans that came with that aesthetic pathway. Very few people make the decision at this level to say. I am aware that i am going to be received a returning conqueror and choose not to conquer at least for an album. It's one of the real failings of internet driven fandom being the kind of engine of a narrative because it doesn't allow someone to say. Hey can you turn the volume down. I just like to slip this out here. I just like to put this out. And casey who. Maybe you know in the piece that amanda road is just very explicit. She's like. I'm not trying to be a popstar like absolutely not. That's not that's not the game but when you have this kind of built in thirst or desire for a quote big album whatever. It is whether it's about divorce or marriage or i don't know staplers enrolls tape like a big album in all you kind of want to do is just be like i just absolutely say that's tough and i and again i think it's an obstacle that that level of star is wrestling with and like i said lord you get a little bit with billy at least in the subject matter this year. What do you think about that..

"That felt like that for me. Yeah i didn't know space to get into this in the review. The i right. But i felt like i was like a subtle kind of refusal here in the same way that i heard in like bela album and the album. Where it's like. She knows that you're expecting like a big brash. Sassy so of like country break- problem and also that you know. Divorce is the perfect match for laker. Returned country valleys. And i feel like she denies a lot of that like she won't give us what we want. Which i think is interesting. I respect for it and i. I respect the ambiguity in the record. But i don't know how gripping is like i think this is. This is something. That's capitalized at all of the reviews. I read about it. It's a really nice record. It sounds like somebody sighing. Like you know taking a few bra at the end of the day. Like i'm free but i don't know how engaging is let's listen to actually angel which you mentioned which i think i agree. Could be read skeptically or or not skeptically. Let's listen to a little bit of angel angel after. Try so hard to say to show you how to fly. If i was an angel wouldn't get so mad. I can't tell if i was being kind or unkind or dead ass wrong saying that angel reminded me of time in a bottle. Because it's like that level of elemental schlocky pop that pops up a few places on the record that kind of straightforward song that you cannot erase from your head even if you are trying to raise from your head it does seem like she's like trying to touch on that slightly izzy less intriguing set of references than she has tried before whether in her psychedelia phase or in her hyper traditionalist. Or hyper post traditionalist. Phase. it is less interesting. I agree when i justified. I was like i can't put my finger on. This reminds me of and then i realized it was died..

"I'll i'll tax your fixer other exhibits. Okay thank you. Were there any other impressions you were left with whether cutting floor staff or just like you know how fraught the interview scenario can be in. You know sometimes people wanna give on. Sometimes they don't but are there things that you walked away feeling were just like subcutaneous. Just a tiny bit. Maybe unspoken about this moment in encasing casing. I think partly. Because i i have a an almost one year old son and so i spent the past leg. You're being thank. You always gotta fit him in there. Any conduct can horrible. We saw what. I saw you on the street a couple of months ago. I was like better in person than on the But i've spent the past year and a half like pregnant or breastfeeding in so coming from that perspective. I was like casey. I really want to speak to you about drugs. That i personally can't do but then i know you have end. She expressed to me like a little trepidation about feeling like she is being being written into. This role is like a dilettante druggy lady. And she's very much not not a dilettante does do is she does drugs not dilatot about it. She's committed. she's used them in this very intentional way in her work she did a guided suicide and trip for. That's part of this album process. Yeah it was an in the story that you mentioned the talks about this silas. I am playlist listened to while she was on the trip and one of the songs on it is grassi. Asala vida which is the final song on the album. She does cover of it and she listened to that while she was doing that. So that's where that came from. I did ask her casey. Do you ever listen to casey musk's songs while you're on a trip. And she was like. Oh no like i would be so happy if other people did..

"It's a little bit always felt a little like over determine for me personally but there is an exuberance kind of on that album right and then this album feels like very reluctant and that tonal shift is actually really where derives its power. I think is in implicit dialogue or response to the last album and that juxtaposition. That kind of like i debut all of this fullness three years ago which could be true in music and it could be true in marriage right. I gave you all this. I presented this full of color. And now i need to kind of get back onto the shell little bit by four myself. I spoke with her and her producers about a particular song breadwinner. Which is i robert villa. Who like the minute. The track listing for this album. Came out was basically like i was resting kelly. I would literally be leading the minute. I fall the word breadwinner on this track listening. I would be like in a camper like driving into the desert somewhere. Nothing bad santa rosa kelly. I'm just saying if you see that and you know it's about you who yeah and it's the song as you might expect..

"She found that she had this very warm reception. That also complicates to me this idea. Of how much do you have to change about yourself. In order to become a global star. And how much do you just have to go around the world. Casey is an interesting case of someone who assembled the fan base largely outside of what we would think of as existing whether it's demographic or genre boxes and in the current internet ecosystem where people often feel loyal to a person more than a sound or an idea. What you said is right. She carries them with them. She carries people her. You said you'll go wherever she goes. And that's how. I think a lot of people feel about casey. I think those people probably don't have loads of anxiety over whether she's going to get played on country radio. I think there are people in nashville. Who having zayed's someone like casey. Musk graves functions the way she jones. But i think casey must crabs fans don't have very much anxiety at all about whether natural gives a damn about what keeps doing that ven diagram. There's not really overlap in those conversations. I don't think radio is less and less of a concern. Mean specifically to her. It also seems clear to me that whatever the algorithm is hasn't quite caught up to her and maybe it's even changed since her new album is come up when i went to casey musk's radio on spotify it was all just contemporary country artists and i asked her about that. And she's like. I so wish i could program this myself and i've had to just ignore it better. Not say that. Because that's that's spotify will make or do it. They'd not to say that. I mean to me and i said this is my review..

"So i was hanging with casey and her to producers in their garage. Studio in nashville. And casey gotta call a facetime on her phone. But on and i didn't know who it was and she showed the screen to her fellow producer. And she's like i'm not gonna answer it and he was like no. You should answer it in so she answered it. And for i would say john five minutes i i did not know who it was. And then ultimately became that she was talking to justin bieber phenomenon. It was like it was a little too perfect. Because i had come with this question. You know what is her orientation toward pop stardom and to have a conversation with her pop. Stardom incarnate in the story is obviously you know very helpful for answering that question. Though i would actually say sidebar. Justin bieber himself pretty ambivalent about pop stardom. It did seem that way. When i was listening to their conversation. It did become clear to him that i was in new york times reporter. Who is there so he knew that i was there to be asked about me. You didn't you didn't come home just eating. Come up but this story was then later. Picked up by some kind of gossipy press you know where they take like one of the most out of your story and make it into. It's like you know justin bieber face times. Casey must graves. And i want to set the record straight. Because i i feel like. I didn't make it clear and i felt like i didn't need to make it clear that he was not facetime ing her in a romantic context. Oh that obvious to me obvious..

"Okay. So lindsay. I'm going to start with you. What did you think a star-crossed. I gotta start by saying that snippet that we just played i kind of feel like every side. Meam that you see on the internet like when i first heard that song it hit me like that and that was my initial reaction. I've loved casey. Since i heard same trailer different park. I grew up listening to country music. So i have this relationship to the genre what i loved about that. I record of hers and just in her work sense. There's this irreverence. that's just irresistibly fun. She's so smart and so critical but also just so endearing. And what led me a little astray on. Star-crossed is that it doesn't have the same. Subtlety golden hour felt so innovative in exceptional. And it made you feel like this is the only person to have ever fallen in love before because this is how intimate i feel with this relationship and look. We had really high expectations. Like casey musk's coming in with this divorce record. Which first of all like dot concept of the break-up record the divorce record is already got so much baked into it and now having a few listens under my belt you know. It doesn't feel like it's as much about the break-up or about like what went wrong as it is about the aftermath and the personal reflections and i think there were moments of golden hour. That were so dreamy optimistic. But it wasn't without some clear eyed insight into exactly what made that relationship tick and anything star-crossed again. I think it lacks some of the subtlety. It speaks platitudes rather than sort of like the incisiveness that has always made casey's work so singular that being said let them all in. I got tickets to the tour. I wanna see that. Dj are real frequently narrative about a break-up one that i felt personally invested in and i don't want to get into social relationships after that we've on twitter that anything that star-crossed it's not a letdown. It's not perfect. But i think that there's a little lack of fat. What made casey really feel so elevated from her peers. It was quite a journey that you took us on. That was very much like. Here's what i don't like. Also i would die for her. They really do. I would die for casey but at the same time you can want more for the people that you love. And i'd sink that way my you know what first of all she's definitely waiting on this divorce album and kind of trying to see where she takes it and i think in a sense because she's such a high profile person. There's a lot of interest to and like just the natural curiosity of like. Oh we're getting a little bit of a window into kind of like this whole experience and what happened and what this was like for her and what went down and i don't think we get a ton of that because she is in many ways absolutely the main character in this album. It's really about kind of like you know good wife and her conforming to something that she's been taught is expected of her and is a role that she's supposed to fall into in seeing that as obviously like an irony there in in that like this is not who she is in an how she's built her career and all of that and so like there's definitely that element of it that i actually appreciate like i think that stayed centered on her however i one hundred percent agree with you. The nuance is not really there. In most of the album for me. I think like a lot of it is so on the nose. I think she expanded kind of her creativity in terms of production and took some risks here in a way that she hasn't. I think in previous albums. But i do think like so much of it was just so cut and dry like this was my divorce. This was high was feeling and it left me feeling a little flat about the whole thing. I wasn't feeling as drawn into this one. I felt kind of removed from her experience. I felt like she had this very specific experience with her divorce. And this is what happened. And for those listening i have never been married so i can't speak to that experience but i would hope that i could have felt a little bit more part of it in that sense and i think the feature and all of that kind of stuff She kind of styles. It in this like greek tragedy for it really leaned into this grandiose opening in these sounds and the way she closes it and ross as el avi then all of these different things and i think she was trying to do something huge here and make a statement here that i think just was ultimately a little absent. You know i agree with you guys. I had somewhat of a similar reaction to this. And i say that with the caveat that there are several songs record i think are outstanding and also that i think this album cannot help but buckle a little bit under the weight of the enormous expectation surrounding it not only in the public at large but for me personally when i think of my favorite albums of the twenty first century. I think of several break-up albums Bonnie avair noah and the whale whale beyond say lemonades not a break up album. But it's very much a relationship turmoil album. And i think of several case. He must graves records so combine the two. It's going to be obviously my favorite album of the twenty first century right. Well obviously like we kind of weight of expectation on something. It's gonna sag a little bit under that weight. I think one thing you guys said about like falling back on platitudes. That kind of comes up again and again. There's a kind of like reaching for the stars thing that comes up. There's like certain lines that just kind of fall flat 'cause they're deeply felt but they don't say anything new one area in which this record suffers in relation to golden hour is that it's very easy to think of those two records thematically as polar opposites. But they're not. Golden hour is not an album full of nothing but technicolor. Love songs. mooney is falling in love. Space cowboy is a break up song. There are some devastating pieces on golden hour. This record by contrast feels more kind of thematically monochromatic in a way. And when i think of some of my other favorite break-up albums they're going through. I think a greater range of emotions more anger more recrimination more bitterness more acceptance more. Here's where i slept around. And this album is kind of gliding over the surface of some of those themes without necessarily going deep into them in a way that feels visceral to the listener. But i do want to kind of segue into the next point of discussion when we're talking about individual favorite songs. I wanna talk about an exception to.

"Akc bioethicists guys. What is something that you wish you could test for the first time again so i just had like a receipt and imagine not trying really one adult and it was the title of my mind. So what's something that you would walk to just as the first time again. Get that same feeling right. I I think Cheesecake for me. She's state because i moved. I didn't have one at all of my childhood. Like living in the bronx that i moved out to philly Outside of philly and the cafeteria you said she stakes but obviously a elementary school cafeteria. It look disgusting. I was like that's fucking gross. And all you weird like philly trash people like can suck a dick. And then when i finally did have my first. She's sick when i was older. I was like this is my favorite thing. I've ever eaten a you. You do love cheese. Love cheese steaks booze here so sick. Why because you're not calling which which which specifically beer whisky beer. Because like i didn't like beer. But that's the thing i mean. So when you relive it you're not going to like it. I think i was like seven the first time i had a beer. Yeah i started drinking. It was the first time. I going to see him you. You didn't enjoy it. You wanna relive that. I buy like you'd like it. But i feel like it's on acquired taste because you've been drinking it yeah wipe your palate cl- clean of it and you take a sip of it for the first time. You're going to have that same reaction. I disagree but i see what you're saying. I mean i guess because you've eaten at drank other things that are like bitter or whatever that kind of similar and you've grown to like those that maybe you would like beer. But i feel like when you say acquired taste. It's not just that like. I don't know maybe it's because you're talking in your body and whatever has changed or is it just because you've consumed that thing and i think it's like it's like you do with everything really dark chocolate until i was like i was like completely. I was eating it the whole time. It only eight milk chocolate. And then one day i am sorry dark chocolate again and i was like well never milk chocolate ever again. This is way better. Yeah that's a good question. What what exactly does acquired tastes me But i would pick something that tastes much better than alcohol. I like these alcohol. That's your downfall slows. Me down enough that i wanna drink it so i don't need it but when you like the taste. That'd be dangerous. That's why especially. Martinis are so great to me. It's like to me that. I do like the taste of that so i could drink. A bunch of them knew budget..

Okay temperature change. Yeah i actually got suddenly taken off to some. I don't know whatever hot i'll tell you. Well some hot about casey graves owe spin. And here's the thing this. Casey must graves fan. Yeah so almost like dave grohl hundred uk. I'll just ask you know it's it's the most obvious. Rebuff of all so casing must graves is coming out with something called sad girl fall which i think specifically is like tear-drops based on your fucking or something like that that product kinda sucks girls like this shit sad girl fall. When i'm not saying casey must grave stolen. I'm saying someone on casey buskers team. Right choice. season was. Greece has been listening to joe radio twitter but her like publicists has an internal as a friend who like like sad boy season. And we've got a great idea musical bagel. You know what happens is you know. You're you're some intern. And some record exact. Anr whoever is like all right any ideas from everybody in the room right now intern go and you go sad girl. Got it because i was just listening to the final burke. That's a great fucking idea. And next thing you know that guys like shed now even blaming them as a blatant like theft. But it's a blatant theft. I've had people who aren't even like fans of barcelona text me being like. It is the most obvious yes of all time. Whatever we've had an instance I remember specifically with this guy batty fun times. Who used to make mike francesa photo shops. They were awesome photo shots but used to ruin them with his watermarks. So i would cut around the watermarks oppose them and he went nuts over that. And i was like you know the funny thing is if you just came to me and said lake. You'll do. those are actually my photoshop. If you don't like the watermark maybe i can make a different one for you and and then we would have had like a thing and fucking at barcelona that could lead to a garden job. You know what i mean but you're nestle about so i was like now i'm gonna make sure that i never give you any credit ever in a cut out every watermark ever. 'cause i was like you could have been cool about it and you decided to be an asshole about it. I wish we could be cool about like. I wish we could get on the line. With casey must graves. It'd be like why. Don't we like collaborators. But it's just not enough league so we have to be assholes about it. We got just it. So i am i am. Casey musk's casey selling really well. So then we're gonna get a deed and then we got to have a reply like back. Why don't we can see them here at barcelona barcelona concentrated. I don't think so. I don't know. I killed this phrase savoie season. that's it that's it. Yeah you like it should be like if you put it in your twitter bio that's it should be enough proof. I bet you know again. It's a whole thing. Remembering John Prine

"For more than fifty years ago John wrote songs that were sad and funny and overall just human songs about regular work in life songs about quiet ordinary days rolling by the songs that were incredibly profound he wrote songs you could grab your guitar and sing along with songs about simple honest truths songs you could use a sort of a road map to life songs that use the language that you spoke with your friends at the bar and songs that you could spend three or four weeks parsing and trying to figure out John died on Tuesday at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville he died from complications of COPD nineteen he was seventy three years old that road map to live John sang about so often he was singing to one person in particular take a listen to this I want to say this is when whenever I've read naming this sounds like advice S. as in I'm talking to myself and you know I was trying to convince myself for that at the time that time don't get wrapped up in your anger you know because people don't realize it but there you can be your own best friend your own best your own worst enemy yeah it's hard to say if you don't know yourself for for some reason you're the hardest person to get up for your case you know it's it's how it's difficult to forgive yourself but within three years of these that's kind of where I was staying there and it works for me is that I'm say this John Prine and Mariposa folk festival in a really Ontario over his seventy three years John's songwriting genius caught the attention of pretty much the biggest names in music Bob Dylan called him a midwestern mind trips to the nth degree who writes beautiful songs Kris Kristofferson hated him after he discovered him because his songs were so good and so easy Bonnie Raitt famously did a cover of his song angel from Montgomery which launched her career John this paper trail for tons of younger folk and country singers people like Jason Isbell and Margo price and Kacey Musgrave if you ever saw John do a live show he tell these hilarious stories and then sing the most devastating songs which is the combination that you really need in twenty eighteen John released his album tree of forgiveness at that time it was first new record in thirteen years and now well I guess it's in honor of John Prine I want to revisit this really special interview I did with him around the time that album came out I got to talk about a line of his that I repeat myself at least once a week even now as we go through this whole thing here's my conversation with the late John Prine when I get to heaven MACA guides in thank you for more blessings than one man can stand then I'm gonna get a guitar and started writing little band check in do swell down any day after live grand and then I'm going to give it back and is that this is there is god is my witness the judge John you can you
