Pilots Agree to Airline Pay Cuts

"Employees of airlines and others are are being asked to Make concessions we see that. In a number of different sit Different airlines but air new zealand staff is. i guess. They're trying to be kind of proactive. And there's been simple flying air new zealand staff. Ask the airline to save jobs and i. i guess there's a petition involved. Here that the employees of signed they're very concerned about outsourcing. They're feeling like at a time. When a lot of the jobs of new zealanders are being cut at the airlines. Why are they continuing to outsource other people's who fly into to work at air new zealand to date. Apparently about four thousand of the air new zealand's twelve thousand jobs have been lost and yet there is a base that they keep Going in shanghai which has a number of employees and basically are new zealand. Employers are saying hey why are you keeping all those people on when you're firing people here at home. Unfortunately air new zealand has pretty much. Held the line and said that That's what they're going to continue to do because they're saying it's fairly standard business practice not just air new zealand but elsewhere to do a certain amount of heirs. outsourcing at some of these remote basis. Klm pilots had to to to make an interesting decision here. They they weren't looking to sign a petition but instead there is a bailout basically from the from the dutch government. That has been installments. As i understand it and the next installment would be three point. Four billion euro package and that would be made up of a one billion euro loan in guarantees for two point four billion euros in bank loans. But in order for the government to sort of activate this payment the kalem pilots had to agree to accept pay cuts that was kind of a requirement for this bailout as i understand it and so we see that the dutch airline pilots association as well as seven other associated trade unions. I say associated not not with the the the pilots association but associated with with the airline Have all agreed to sign a commitment clause that they would Agree to accept. Pay cuts in order to activate this This bailout installment kind of a tough decision

Long live the Queen: We say goodbye to a big chunk of the passenger 747 fleet

"In the last episode Jason said. Go What did I say you said that you could still fly on a British Airways seven, four seven at the time that I said it that was a true statement. And it was a true statement for all of seventy two hours. Then British Airways said, no, you can't. No, you can't they're gone. They're gone effective immediately and we will never fly again. We don't even know if they're going to get any sort of official sendoff for celebration or anything do the at calm rumors necessarily but kind of scuttle. But around the water cooler such as it is says that they are not inclined to participate in any sort of send off because of the current climate they find themselves in. Well. That is just extremely on physician by I think more. So than any other airliner, even really any other aircraft and I know people are going to argue in bicker about this. And L. means emails. Two four DOT com. When I, think of British Airways I think of the seven four, seven I think of the seven four, seven, I think of British Airways the two are intrinsically linked. To imagine a British Airways were about seven, four seven is really difficult for me. Yeah. It's. It's of those things that You know there was a couple. Are a couple lines that you immediately associate the seven, four seven with an obviously the the first and foremost him just because of the history there. But then when when you kind of think of like the top three or four airlines, I, immediately think British Airways KLM. And the. KLM has already retired or I think mostly retired. So they have to serving in in cargo capacity to combat serving cargo Carl only capacity. But but yeah, they're not flying passengers and yeah and KLM only had a few towards the later days but British Airways a significant chunk of its widebody fleet was still seven four. Yeah I mean they were operating a fleet of thirty. So I mean that's not we're down to two tons of with twenty eight young. British Airways we see to retire its entire seven, four, seven fleet by either twenty, twenty, three, twenty, four, twenty, four. So the writing the wall but the wall we've got a whole lot closer right the the wall basically fell. Fell on top of the fleet but there are still some four sevens out there. There are still chances may be two to fly them. Should you want to go out and do that? Obviously, your best chance is going to be Lufthansa at some point, they haven't announced anything about retiring. There's they're putting them into two storage. Planning bring them back So twenty, their Korean Airlines has twelve China Airlines has four Air China has eight, and then you kind of start to whittle things down I. I would say that the under a Russia has nine, but I would say that there's a good chance that may be Thai Airways with eight is probably not bringing there's back or if they do, it won't be for long. But I could be wrong. Indy only has four in. It'll be interesting to see what they ended up doing with there's and then there's a few charter airlines like wellness has five and Atlas Air has four. So you can't really book a ticket on those but you know you've got stand up on you. You've got a decent chance of flying on those if you book a ticket on other airlines. So thankfully at least for my New York City centric mind, we have three airlines that to be the three airlines operate the seven, four, seven, Dash Eight. Tonnes a Korean Air, China all at some point operated the the dash eight two K. typically in the summer. So I hope we see them again. But honestly, there is a a likely reality in which JFK does not see a seven, four, seven in regular passenger service. Again, I don't think it's out of the question that that's a possibility and that makes me very, very sad. Yeah. I. Mean I. I was thinking about this the other day when we were putting kind of listing who who, still flying him and things like that and and I was supposed to do a trip hin in April. Originally, we were going to do something really cool and one of the things that I was really looking forward to flying the Lufthansa's dash eight but did not get that chance but maybe next year year after it'll still be there and still be a possibility. But yeah, I. Mean the fleet was just such you know. That that livery. Deliveries on the for seven just looked so good and then when they did the the heritage liveries games, they just looked so

France announces $16.9 billion in aid to aviation industry

"The French government declares a state of emergency for its aerospace industry live from London. This is marketplace morning report from the BBC World Service I'm Victoria. Craig Good Morning France Economy Minister. Today unleashed another roughly ten billion dollars in emergency aid for the nation industry, which is struggling from a drop in demand, due to corona virus travel restrictions the government support for the industry. Industry now totals nearly seventeen billion dollars including a previously announced rescue package for the airline air. France KLM the BBC. Legged explains how today's fresh funding will be allocated one and a half billion euros for research into decarbonisation of aircraft, trying to green at the industry, an investment fund for Small and medium-sized enterprises, which will start off at half a billion euros and rise. Rise to a billion over time. What this package is about is clearing up the damage that has been done by the COVID nineteen crisis. It's a huge industry. In France it employs nearly two hundred thousand people and the city of to lose him. The South West where Airbus has, its headquarters is massively dependent on this industry and the theories, the with aircraft production having. Having declined by more than a third since the crisis, the thousands of people could be laid off and to lose could become Europe's Detroit, so the French government is very keen to over the crisis, and then to provide the foundation for future growth as well. The Global Aviation Industry has been struggling to stay afloat amid the COVID, nineteen, pandemic and today. It's not. Not just France, but Hong Kong's flag-carrier. Cathay Pacific also received. Government assistance yes. Catholic Pacific has been very badly hit by the COVID nineteen crisis, and even before that it was feeling the effects of civil unrest in Hong Kong, which was deterring people from travelling, so there's a large bail out package. Does the government investment worth about two point six billion dollars a government? Government loan worth another billion and the existing shareholders of Catholic Pacific, the main ones being swire China and castaways putting more money in as well about one and a half billion dollars, so it's to help tiny airline over until traffic picks up again. The BBC's the delegate. Thanks so much. You'll very welcome. Victoria

Coronavirus and the impact on airline industry

"Not looking good for Virgin Atlantic. Yes so they announced yes to that. Cutting third of the workforce lots more than three thousand jobs. They've also said that they're going to be exiting Gatwick. Which has been its London base for thirty five years? They are still maintaining that base up in Manchester And this company had already actually been struggling with profitability for several years. So it's perhaps not surprising that they're really facing issues now. The government refused to Baylor saying that I haven't looked hard enough. Other investors elsewhere in the line is basically said that it's now fighting for its survival and that more measures might have to be introduced in the coming months and years and I think the story shows a few things it really shows that the week affirms a feeling the effects fast in an industry aviation industry which is struggling as a whole. And then there's also the knock on effect on airports Gatwick received a COUPLA recently. Be a Saturday causing flights out of their needs. Airports really depend on airlines for these lucrative slots so this is going to be a big problem to several people up and down the chain but there is good news for Wizar- Yes a Wiza- which is one of the airlines which has proved surprisingly buoyant. They managed to keep a large amount of cash surplus which has helped to tide them over during this crisis. And they're actually already. They've already resumed. Flights from Luton to some eastern European countries mainly bringing the seasonal farmworkers for example they brought over about hundred people lost Friday and they will announce that they're going to be resuming flights to Greece and Portugal from around June July to start tentatively taking holidaymakers abroad. They said that they will stop obviously wearing gloves. And now handout mosques to people that they haven't said that they'll be keeping that middle aisle seat free If if there is enough demand to finit they said that there just isn't evidence that that will reduce the risk of Jumps being spread. I mean we're seeing lots of airlines for instance. Klm saying that That they will be saying that. Mosque wearing is absolutely mandatory. But it's hard to see Without that middle seat being taken out how social distance thing. An and virus control can happen on aeroplanes effectively. Yeah I completely agree I mean on one hand. You are just got your. You have people in fairly close quarters in an airplane. The airplanes not going to be redesigned overnight people all within a mutual two of each other. Anyway I think a lot of it will center around. Different cleaning. Practices was the not going to have the magazine. For example so fewer and fewer touch points for people to transmit things and regular cleaning processes and staff updated on those sort of procedures Right well with the with airlines ca beginning to fly again. Airbnb is seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. Tell us more about that. Yes this is an interesting one because AIRBNB They started out their financials. And it's not looking great actually for the company that cussing about twenty five percent of the workforce and their revenues predicted to hard this year. So that's sir drop of about two billion. And but they have said that they they're starting to see a tends to rise in domestic booking so obviously international travel is still looking shaky and wizards one of the few people and Kalamazoo said to start offering this flights but in places like Denmark and the Netherlands. For example people are starting to look into kings and make bookings to travel and holiday within their own country. And I think this ties in with a trend that we're going to be seeing a lot sort of rise of the staycationing this year as people pass aren't quite sure if they're ready to get on a flight or take an international holiday but they do still want to have a break they do still want to get away from from home so this this works with something that airbnb has already been seeing in China which is obviously ahead of the curve a bit from Europe where people are starting to travel domestically and take holidays within the country. Those name quite a little publicity around the fact that there are very cheap. Airfares out there at the moment. And also very cheap hotel bookings But it comes down to what the insurance policy is because we can book holidays abroad or indeed at home But we may very well may have to cancel them exactly. I think there's still so much uncertainty for people you know. I think people are desperate for holiday. It's been it's been really difficult. Few months vote for Europeans and for people all over the world. But it's just not clear whether for example be another spike in cases in your home country or the country where you're going to whether there's lockdown measures will change we'll more travel bans be brought in so. I think people are still waiting to see how things pan out in the next few months.

Twenty one percent of the elderly had talked to the vice is already up and running and yeah basically it's a very promising medium medium for them so with the consortium and trying to get customers are basically trying to get organizations to create services for the elderly because Handy Handy. That's great you know. I M super bullish on the elderly invoice because it's not technology they need to learn just talk and and it just works and I think it's one of the. There's such an opportunity for the voice industry to get in and help Italy and have them lead a better life. I it's what I've found with snow already for a year and a half is that it's a flywheel effect I found platforms. They get more users at more of a positive a PR angle. It's not just light bulbs on and often buying flowers knows making people's lives better. There is so much impact their customer or the organizations get more customer service purpose than better and then the elderly whose lives get ab- lifted so and that together it creates like a magic potion if you will and we started now also in Denmark. I'm looking to start in Germany in the UK as well as in the US news. So that's my mission so you touched a bit with talking about your project and silver and elderly but where thirty one of the voice and what do you see it going in next year five years. I wonder I ponder that so on one one hand I think are we still. I wonder are we at the gopher stage of see remember ads. Remember that this tree whip creates are are we at compuserve and AOL live at further was walled gardens which suites the platforms aren't or are we at the stage age. Where you had just Nokia blackberry but no iphone or android and I think we are before the iphone moment of voice and Actually Salihi standing in the sand or that? Yeah we're trying to push the industry forward and you know we have very able and great competitors and I think it's all it's all just a rising tide for all going on right now. So Martin. People want to follow what you're doing project silver or yourself. How would they keep in contact with Zilmer with a z dot com where we will publish publish our research results next week? "Fifty four hundred dollars a bag would normally last me five years for as much as I travel. That's that's that's I'm I find that worth it the last to travel pro bags I had their manufacturing quality went down and the last two bags that I had from travel. Pro one lasted me a year. The other one lasted a year and a half before zippers tour, or the seems broke not acceptable. I don't know. So to me I bought a very nice to me bag because I got a carry on bag from to me, which is the greatest carry on bag ever for computer. And it's perfect. So I went for the big piece of luggage. It was it was a little over a thousand bucks. My wife Dutch, cheap couldn't understand it. That's it's it's it's it's to spend that much money for a piece of luggage. So the great thing that happened to me. Me and basil after I was snowed in. KLM is is connected with Delta Airlines, you'll love kale. So I flew KLM to basil to him in Amsterdam back to the states. So on my flight from Basel to Amsterdam the machine that they have collect the bag whatever ripped my luggage. You could see that. It was like some kind of mechanical prong because it's symmetrical to rips in the fucking bang. So I kept the receipt for the bag when I got to empty him. I made a claim with KLM European travel rights, the passengers have rights, the we do not have in the United States because our scumbag corporate overlords. Delta Airlines and every fucking. Politicking who doesn't make safety regulations or with apple rights for the human being passenger tax payers. We don't have all kinds of protections like internet privacy or travel rights, so European travel rights and KLM I was reimbursed for the full price of the bag because I kept the receives fucked it up, and they should pay. So I have to rips on it. But they make me smile every time. I see it because I got a free bag out of the rips. That's cool. Anyway, my mom said that she goes, you know, if they delay over certain amount of three or four hours, whatever it is like they just have to pay you all this money. It's not just like free flight shit like here. Yeah. And then and then also KLM I was given a per diem. Wow. For those days, those extra days that I was in Switzerland, which I should have known. I didn't know that until after the fact because. I was just eating it like some regular restaurants had I known I would have gone too, much nicer restaurants that that KLM was footing. The bill. Oslo? I liked I thought it was a cool. I love on the town. Yeah. You know away from the town centre where the tourists with a Nobel prize places. But like I like it better than Stockholm. And I like it better than Copenhagen. I Oslo I thought like Copenhagen I haven't been to Copenhagen years. So I need to Copenhagen. Yeah. I need to give company. Actually, I shouldn't say that. When I can both be great. I was in Copenhagen. I think fifteen years ago is last time it was December. They had Viking torches. Illuminating the main boulevard, and then they had that they only bring it out at Christmas that warm red wine with raisins and nuts. I know this. It's not it's Glueck. Yeah. Look. Yeah. It was incredible. Yeah. With raisins in there and nuts. It's so it's boon. Yeah. It's different than what do they call it or the call the other one mould mould mould blue-eyed. Yeah. It's slightly different. It's like the Danish version of it. Yeah. Luke. Yeah..
