US taking hard look at UK variant of coronavirus

"Across the nation are not enough. Should Americans be concerned about the new strain of covert 19? Certainly should we keep our eye on it? Absolutely. But also this is not surprising in a way viruses mutate. That's Catherine Bullish and infectious disease expert with Stanford University talking to K G O, also speaking to kgo University of California, San Francisco research. Nevin Kragen. He's not concerned about the vaccine working on the new variant right now. One needs to keep in mind that there's a large amount of antibodies. When you initially get the vaccine, it looks like those mutations have no effect. But when the anybody start to decrease The fear is that those mutations then would result in more susceptibility. When the antibody levels are lower. Scientists are still researching the new variant and the current vaccines. I'm surely Adler. The first cases of that new variant are now beyond the U. "Kgo 8 10. Welcome back to Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. The Bears beating Oregon tonight, 21 to 17. And one of the things that jumps out at me is I may be wrong at this guy's, but those may have been the tooth. The first two forced fumbles of the year for 50 recovers two recovered fumbles. Yeah, There we go. How about that? And how about Nick or media tonight member? We talked about them, making him Maura part of this offense and getting him involved. Six catches tonight. 81 yards a touchdown, but along 28 so fantastic only four catches for nine yards and one touchdown before tonight. What are what? What a big game. This is for Cal to give us some sense of optimism again and trying to get past the horrors of the first few weeks because, as you say, it's the first time they've had a full line up, and now they're playing the way we thought they would, and only 271 yards of total offense for Cal. I mean that It jumps out at you. Obviously, defense played a huge part tonight. They made the 271 yards count tonight. No doubt about it. So Garber's on the night 183 yards, passing two touchdowns, No interceptions. That's a big deal. On overall, the pretty efficient performance. A lot of different guys got the ball they have. In fact, they had seven different people. Six different people who had running play tonight for Cal, so they spread it out pretty good. Get the ball control. What it did is it kept Oregon off the field that offense because they got two touchdowns in the final two minutes and eight seconds of the first half. They're capable of doing that. And so when you ball control like that, that's maybe maybe two. Possibly three other possessions they didn't get because we had the football on that one spanning the end of the first quarter in the second that 19 play nine minutes and 52 yard drive for a touchdown. I mean, that's two possessions there that Oregon did not get because the Bears possessed talk about ball control. For all those guys are like a ball control. Doesn't matter. The Bears had almost a whole quarter. Maurer with the ball tonight. They have 36 03 terms of possession to 23 57. That's almost 15 minutes. That's that's a lot of time right there. I mean, you made the point that you keep the offense of the other team off the field. They're explosive. They got athletes. They're going to find it eventually. But if you keep them off the field they can't and so defense did a great job and the offense did It's job in executing when they had to write Red Zone finishes were huge. Okay, Well, now we have no idea what we think We have coach right or go Good. Ready to go. All right coaches with us and isn't that a much nicer finish? Yeah, It feels good. You know, the Guys earned. It felt like just kind of for all that. I've been working through here recently. And even before I got to camp just, uh, really good feeling for them. I'm super proud of our team and all the people players, certainly, and then all the people that helped us get to this point, So it's a great win for the program and Think we're we're excited about continuing to improve building off of it. Coach. I know that it's college football. No matter who's on the field. They gotta earn a scholarship check. But you had the majority of the guys that you expected to be your starters coming into the game here tonight, Right? The offensive line comes back. Croteau comes back. Call Morris back. A lot of the faces that you expected to be part of that story group tonight how much of a difference of that make in terms of chemistry and attitude on the team. I think it always helps. But I got to say even in the last couple weeks, I thought the guys played well together. You know, we always want to play with a full deck. But I thought even the last couple weeks. The guys that were filling in did a great job and We think there's a big days ahead for those guys as well. But getting some of those veterans back. We've got a lot of experience and some of our better players, I think always helps. Nickel remedial was treated pretty much like a pin yada much tonight and still had an incredible night. He did, Niko. We You know, for the last couple weeks been trying to get him the ball and for whatever reason, it hasn't gone to him as much Just kind of by the look of the draw on some things, but he did a did a great job catching the ball it a huge, fourth down catch made Cem Really tough catches on, then had some really good returns. Unfortunately, we have one big return that got wiped out by a penalty. But Years. A guy, obviously that we Think really highly of him. We want to continue toe get him involved. Coaching. Oregon scored twice at the end of the first half in in a very short span of time. And maybe, you know, like two minutes and eight seconds, they got two touchdowns, but for the other 57 plus minutes of the game What was so successful? I mean, your defense gives up 17 points to a team averaging 38 points a game. Team defense all the way around. I think you look at the different guys making some big plays. You know, we try toe. As best we can make the other. The other team earned there earn their points. Unfortunately, at the end of the half their we gave him They got some really good players and good schemes s o way acknowledge that, but we felt like we kind of gave him a couple easy ones there and So I thought the guys really played hard to routes like that always have and we were able to. At the end of the game. The 2/4 quarter turnovers were Obviously a had a lot to do with outcome and again. Big plays has been a big story for this year. Obviously, for you guys a couple of big plays against you it Oregon State you don't get On your returns. Tonight. You guys were able to make enough big plays in response to make a difference. How did that happen? And how did that work out for you? Yeah, again. It's just a team effort, and we knew Still do that Organs, very talented team. Both sides of the ball and Way knew what we'd have to make our share in order to win. I think the again I think if you look defensively We gave up the two big ones We weigh just had bus flat out. But the finished the game with two turnovers in the fourth quarter. And then the offense take care of the ball like they did, And I also want to note just the offense. Driving the ball and I think the time of possession was discrepancy. There was pretty large, and that had a lot to do with our offense, doing a great job, driving it and then defensively, getting off the field on some third downs. You held it for 12 minutes and six seconds more than they did tonight. I mean, yeah, that is a fantastic differential. Certainly we want to score. We're going to continue to think we can even do better on finishing some of those drives. But it was great, but we had a couple drive in the first half of the one with 13 plays. The other woman was 19. Um You know, and guys just executing all the way down the field, running it and throwing it And that was great to see against a talented team like that..

We've seen this in Countries, other countries in Europe and elsewhere in the world where students have gone back to school and have done so very successfully. Public health experts, however, warning that a one size fits all reopening could drive infection and death rates even higher. "Hello welcome to KGO right our system does not a lot of reporting on Hey he was there was some people cleared out in front of the church and by the White House and president trump will cross the street into the picture there and there's been a lot of missed missed reporting on that that call was made the night before when the riders are crashing the gates of the White House and they push them back in many twenty US surveys rendered fighting for your White House and they wanted me to push it back to me to print a larger they told them three times you have to move what we're doing they did not move so they were removed they were removed forcibly and that's how it works violently right forcibly violently using tear gas using helicopters and using a non lethal projectiles and they did this when the demonstrators at anytime the demonstrators were peaceful and it was just not fun not long before right not long before that you don't make you correct it does make you sound silly excuse me I'm trying to give you facts that you don't want him to you the curfew almost it wasn't about that you know what if you're just going to talk and not allow me to respond the perimeter you're right they were creating a perimeter around exactly there is a larger the projected space yes okay so they did that violently instead of waiting and still waiting for the curfew to come they did a violently excuse me the protesters were not being violent do you Lou do you admit they were not being violent I by mistake they were taking a position which the White House where they were not being violent they're waiting for night to fall so we can dance on the White House okay then you have given yourself up because they weren't being violent and there was no reason then for a violent response there was no reason for a violent response as a matter of fact at the time that Donald Trump was speaking and he was saying he supports a peaceful protest at that time you could hear the flash bang grenades going off I mean it was one of those ridiculous things that were put reporters from around the world who were there who captured this the reporters including an S. Australian reporter who was assaulted as she was reporting on this she was assaulted by one of the federal police I think was a park police officer you can see the video of this you can see with your own eyes you don't have to believe what I say believe with your own eyes and the reporters who were there and they were positioned in various parts of Lafayette park they all say the same thing it was a peaceful protest there was no violence until the horses and the the shooting and the tear gas began to envelop the crowd that is when the crowd started throwing things at those officers it was a peaceful protest eighty eighty eight ten is the telephone number and and moving back the perimeter what about the priest on the lot on the on the grounds of the church he also faced a non lethal projectiles and tear gas or is he lying to eighty eighty eight ten is the telephone number eight oh eight oh eight ten let's go to Adelaide Adelaide call I'm sorry I'm late I have to take a break here I'll get you when we come.

"Good morning and thank you for joining me on the KGO morning show and as I have mentioned many many times I believe that a lot of students could take advantage of us spending less going to college by starting at a community college but college the path there has it changed over night it seems like because of this pandemic there may not be enough funding for community colleges there may be students that were thinking about going to a four year college that is now learning that that college is that just going to be online at least for the fall semester and when we are talking about thousands upon thousands of dollars some paid by the students they met their parents may not be able to afford to send them to college is it wise to go when you're not getting the full college experience should you perhaps take a gap year well Katie's broad I hope I'm pronouncing your name right Katie is a managing counselor at college wise and she joins me now good morning good morning Mickey how are you doing I'm doing well so gap years that is kind of maybe taking a year off in between high school and college many students you know like I want to get some life experience before I go to college maybe I don't know what I want to do maybe I want to travel through Europe but we're in the midst of a global pandemic my colleague Kim McAllister was mentioning taking a gap year to do what exactly so yeah are you hearing from students are you seeing a lot of them considering taking a gap year that words before yeah absolutely so what I've been noticing that might student because it being a super personal and a family decision as they weigh the risk of frankly what a gap year may or may not look like especially given what's actually available versus the risk of what in part of a non traditional school year might look like at your top choice school so the students that I'm working with what I'm really doing is trying to help them think of if you take a gap year what are your actual option because one thing to note is that many colleges don't allow students to take you know community college classes during that gap year because then they'd be considered a transfer student so if you're unable to take classes and you're at home at your parents house knowing that you can't necessarily you know travel abroad I I would want you to think of thoughtful unique interesting ways to spend their time right whether that you know finding something that would impact their community there's really cool ways to get involved in the in the upcoming election this year right or finding an interesting kind of diving into you know new and different ways to explore that so at that point of the trick is to waive those different options we don't know yet how colleges are going to attend the open up or not this fall exactly how colleges view students to take a gap year I mean some students might in other times of course might want to do some traveling may not be necessarily voluntary they just they just don't want to go right back into maybe a four or a six year college career right away do colleges look kind of down on this pause or is it more you know that was a personal choice and they judge the students for where they are when they end the gap year yeah that's a great question and interestingly you know why we start to my family's about how there's no over two thousand different universities in the U. S. so therefore there's two thousand different admissions process the largely does depend on the college university as to how they look at that gap year so for some schools when you apply you can indicate that you're hoping to take a gap year and you know and they'll evaluate that appropriately for other schools after you get accepted you're able to request a deferral you take your gap year into some schools are going to grant that and others are not and that's what's tricky especially during a pandemic because we actually have all these enrollment managers who have a really difficult job right now trying to weigh okay if we allow X. number of students to take a gap year are we then going to be over enrolling for the following year so it's quite a numbers game for a lot of these colleges figure out you know how they will take you back here the most important thing is just to have students you know have a thoughtful reason for wanting to take a gap year and spend their time in a kind of a useful way exactly exactly hi I'm speaking with Katie's frog managing counselor at college wise college wise also is launching a free podcast it's called get wise for parents and students you know because there's tons.

"Six on KGO and you know we've heard it we hear from you that no it's all corona virus all the time and it's and it might be feeding into a bit of the hysteria that's why this morning we were talking to some of the experts were talking to Dr John Schwartzberg who is an infectious disease expert at UC Berkeley school of public health we'll have him back on and others answering your questions because that's where people will feel home it's not three tweets or through social media we have to get through this we also have to understand that there are questions that we just can't answer right now we just don't know the experts are trying to figure it out although one of the phones for one five eighty eighty eight ten Antoine and Brent what how are you feeling has this coronavirus you know just evolves into a story it's playing out on Wall Street well I'm not really bothered by what's going to happen because you know I'm a man of faith the other side of things do you know our leader right now it does matter what he stares at least though warrant warning everyone about his rhetoric and his hyperbole and now we're in a crisis if you were a little first of a bomb disposal elbow bump someone that would have been taken so badly because he's already taken that at least he will disappear into the background and allow you know the experts for front or a lighter note are you still value which ship congratulations maintains I do think that the public needs to take care wash your hands put gloves on and you have to deal with the public but other than that you know isolate yourself in a in a few minutes in a human humanistic way right you know you ain't gotta isolate people and B. there's growing people ownership you know saying because you know we have all of these Oakland based here's where we could have easily there but anyway I don't want to go into that just to carry yourself everybody in Ireland we're going to create a grand baby and you know it is too small of a world for us to be isolating each other you know I hear you saying Anton and thanks for your call I obviously if you're sick you should be quarantining yourself but I think our interactions if we are out in the public healthy we should judge people for how they look and assume that they might be spreading the virus it's also flu season people have allergies people are allowed to sneeze and cough and hopefully they're doing it appropriately but you know we have to listen to the experts one expert that was getting a some he was the U. S. Surgeon General just because you know he had to take some time to praise the president's handling of the whole thing but he did tweet is like employers please understand giving your employees flexible and paid sick leave they'll save you money in the long run it's much cheaper than shutting down because everyone else is sick that's not possible in every field would you be able to do that four one five eighty eighty eight ten if your work told you don't come in with a pay you do you have enough sick leave I know a lot of people that don't have a colleague whose wife was just told to stay home for the week four one five eighty eighty eight ten your calls next on KGO special report markets plunge it was the equivalent of a financial tsunami and hurricane hitting at the same time the corona virus and the Croatian oil prices said Wall Street down big and fast this morning the decline was so steep that circuit breakers went into effect in halted trading after the market fell more than seven percent in only a matter of minutes more from correspondent Alison Conseco on Wall Street did see stocks bounced off their lows but why did they originally panic part of the panic was because of oil prices crashing over the weekend tumbling thirty percent that really spooked the markets because that can have a real ripple effect throughout the economy that creates that layer affects of fear that already existed because of the corona virus no foreign markets are down as well as the U. S. markets European Union leaders will hold emergency talks today to discuss a joint response to problems from your next update is at the top of the hour when it breaks on KGO eight ten and mark the other was also following the numbers who will join us in just a moment first all here in the bay area federal and state officials are preparing to receive thousands of people in Oakland from a cruise ship that has been Idoling off the coast at least twenty one people on board are infected with a corona virus most of them staff members a porch folks persons as the ship is scheduled to dock in Oakland at noon governor Gavin Newsom says the passengers are being triage before the vessel comes to port we will move forward by prioritizing those that are most acute first trust people that will come off the ship in a rapid manner will be those that are a symptomatic and those most in need of medical support fences have been installed and an eleven acre site at the port of Oakland as authorities ready to flights in buses to west the more than two thousand passengers aboard the grand princess to military bases or their home countries or home states for the fourteen day quarantine there are confirmed cases in all nine bay area counties in California's first covert nineteen related death was in plaster county a man who was a passenger on a cruise out of San Francisco so do you have a.

"On KGO hello you heard on the national news and I I heard angel coro sterling for pap Thurston this we talked about and that has to do with the full rights and then you may know but conservative activists led by Phyllis Schlafly wait Phyllis Schlafly waged a successful campaign against the equal rights amendment decades ago and their argument was that would force women into combat legalize gay marriage and he rode gender roles wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute of the R. eight didn't pass M. women now serve in combat gay marriage is legal and general certainly have eroded but in this year opponents are zeroing in on a line of attack the claim the ERA would require taxpayer funded abortions out the house will vote later this week on a bill that would remove the deadline for ratifying the equal rights amendment and let me remind you that eight a date was set out Congress had originally set a ratification deadline of March twenty second nineteen seventy nine for the state legislature to consider ERA through nineteen seventy seven the amendment received thirty five of the necessary thirty eight ratifications and with wide support including that of both major political parties both houses of Congress presidents Nixon Ford and Carter V. E. R. A. seemed destined for ratification until the late Phyllis Schlafly mobilize conservative women opposition and I've explained to you what their position was five state legislatures Idaho Kentucky Nebraska Tennessee and South Dakota voted to revoke their ratification this the first for a rescinded before the original March twenty second nineteen seventy nine ratification deadline well South Dakota legislature did so by voting to sunset the ratification as of that original deadline now here's the point the question now is they want to bring the R. A. back the houses I said is going to vote for the E. R. A. a to bring it up now the bill is expected to pass the house but it has little or no chance of winning support from the Republican controlled Senate or to be honest from president Donald Trump the real fight will likely take place in federal courts but I sense the battle for public opinion is already in full swing and influential and well funded anti abortion groups and their allies in Congress don't want to take any chances and and this is what Steve Scalise the Republican whip in the house is set everyone knows this renewed effort isn't about women's rights it's about eliminating federal and state life protections and ushering in an era of taxpayer funding for abortion four one five eight zero eight zero eight ten let me ask you how you feel about the ERA do you believe that the equal rights amendment should be part of the constitution now I think this is worthy of real discussion now do you remember the resolution HR two oh eight proposing an amendment to the constitution of the United States relatively equal rights for men and women you ready for this and the following article is proposed as an amendment to the constitution of the United States okay section one equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex section two the Congress shall have the power to enforce by appropriate legislation the provisions of this article and three the amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification now every person understands that the equal rights amendment may come up for debate so I want to ask you what do you think the equal rights amendment should be ratified on March twenty second nineteen seventy two the equal rights amendment was placed before the state legislatures with a seven year deadline to acquire ratification by free force thirty eight of the state legislatures a majority of states ratify the proposed constitutional moment within a year Hawaii became the first state to ratify the E. R. Hey when it did so on the same day the amendment was approved by Congress the US Senate vote on the resolution up also passed so so you know every everyone is approved this and I have all states here that have voted for it and Virginia by the way added its voice to this on January fifteenth member the Democrats took control of the legislature this year I am proud of that there were other states that added their voice but then you have states like the brassica Tennessee Idaho Kentucky who rescinded their approvals and now what's required is a congressional extension of the ratification so my question is a simple one do you think that there should be an extension do you believe the equal rights amendment should be approved and do you believe that the debate over E. R. A. now centers on abortion that's the argument Steve Scalise and others are making conservatives argue that because only women who have abortions any restriction on the procedure could be deemed unconstitutional under the are a and they are excoriating progressive supporters of the amendment for dancing around this open legal question at E. R. eight proponents intern accuse conservatives of hopping on the abortion issue because most of the dire consequences they predicted in the nineteen seventies have already come to pass four one five eight zero eight zero eight ten.

"Purity products show on KGO now filling in for that first KGO eight ten as promised going right to the phones talking to you about what the New Hampshire election might have done to your own decision about whom to vote for and why we go right to the phones and talk to Matt was checking in from that but I think we've spoken before how are you thank you thank you sh yeah nothing to specific I guess about New Hampshire but just the the idea that Sanders socialism actions are really going to be a problem against trump plaza couple responses about that I mean number one all the people that are Democrats in particular but independence as well that are thoroughly anti trump I just would really be surprised if the idea of socialism would get them to not vote against trump because there seem to be the most about the idea that no matter what you will be the democratic candidate against drop at this point and also with the Republicans I think he's likely to get a fair amount of votes with them because he's very much an anti establishment Democrats Republicans tend to show some obscenity for that position and Eddie seems straightforward moved actually really believes in what he's what he's saying and I know some of those are kind of obvious things that we've all heard but I think you put it all together and some of the polling that's out there looks pretty good for him I thank you gonna get strong yeah that's my comment appreciate and I thank you for that I I kind of wonder about it and this is a subset of America I spend too much time on Twitter I understand the Twitter is not the world but within Twitter there is a disturbing percentage of people who are Bernie or nothing they don't believe in anything but trump they believe in Bernie or staying home I don't know how representative they are but they certainly are loud and as a percentage of Twitter there certainly large in number I worry about that because to me it puts the importance of one candidate above the importance of what's going to happen in the country overall I also wonder about the people this is something I do not understand maybe if you believe this you can explain it to me eight zero eight zero eight one zero I don't understand those who say if their candidate does not win on the democratic side they're willing to vote for Donald Trump that to me is as beyond apples and oranges that to me is is is bread flour versus concrete I would I don't understand how you can say I will support a democratic candidate unless my candidate loses and then I will vote for Donald Trump I just don't understand that also to match point I think one of the things that we have to pay attention to in this example that we just discussed with Scott clementa The Washington Post is that Sanders has support of young people by far young people are not afraid of the word or the concept of socialism in an earlier poll seventy seventy percent of millennials say that they would vote for socialists and they're not afraid of the socialism label anymore they see an appeal they see a democracy that is failing and they're willing to try something new those people will in fact vote for Bernie Sanders let's move on over the phones Charles interested you are on the air on the Patterson show within I chose yes I'm sorry so I had to press the right button start hi confusing so anyway I actually was we strongly zero warm blueberry ticket I mean I think that's the most balanced degree possible for to have the wherewithal to actually put trump out of office although I must say I was quite impressed that included her and see much more in the past so I might be open to that one and getting out of socialism looks nice it down good academically I told the kid a when people are younger it sounds like a beautiful thing to see actually applied to too many problems with it yeah I know you're gonna probably real quick I'm going time I thought having you please go ahead I haven't seen socials models of personal several times invariably turns out that you can't control the human condition social work perfectly everybody's on the same page is willing to give themselves a larger good unfortunately humans are like that we are not like that Americans have lost the concept of the comments today really absolute truth so I mean some small northern European countries perhaps in some of the baby sent American intervention ride all it's pretty much still in those areas but he was a very small example for kind of works under very special conditions the summit the flight here just as a war sorry guys can't take a moral substantial medically bloomers because he actually has a pretty solid understanding of economic help worse if we can't get our deficit turned around north brook twenty three twenty but also it offers some social belts doesn't bite the P. Warren and or Kuchar plus bloomer kit would be pardon will select one I would offer fascinating stuff in their trials and I thank you for the phone call I'm gonna respond to some of that on the other side of this news break but it is very important to find out what else is going on in the world can McAllister has that coming up next on the Panthers and show on KGO your listening about Thursday Joe filling in for Pat today it's Angie.

"And the reason I wrote that piece which is available on the KGO line the reason I wrote it is to point out that in history Republican standard bearers I have had the courage to take contrary positions I I will tell you honestly but I believe that the soul of the Republican Party is at stake four one five eight zero eight zero eight ten let's get your comments let's go to John calling from San Jose John welcome to cage good evening I always appreciate the opportunity and there's no place I'd rather be in a restaurant thank you Sir but where is your sense of fairness you asked for the senators to stand up against the president when he hasn't even had a chance to present is the sense that I'll tell you I am very fair I really am and I'll tell you the problem the defense attorneys have been on television all day I've watched they have made statements on CNN they made statements on fox right I only had a moment to watch MSNBC but I think I think Jay secular appeared there are their argument fundamentally is this yes he did it but what he did does not rise to the level of an impeachable offense and we discussed what rises to the level of an impeachable offense I cannot help but reflect that if this were Barack Obama doing the exact same thing the Republicans would have been up in arms in fact you would have the peeling off the roof of the capital because they would want to leave the political vomited withhold aid numerous times from what I've read can I ask you can I ask you that the president of the United States offer a quid pro quo residents say one withholding aid and presidents to withhold it by the way this aid could not open it with the gentleman the president that he was holding the quick quotes quill again said no that didn't happen there was no strong arming and all right I go I said enough court rooms to know observing and having served on juries if you ask someone who is guilty they generally deny their gills the president's guilt is clear the money was held up the Lynskey the whiskies guilty knows when there was no Sir or was the money held up what money held out of course okay and number two was the president on the record his own words asking for an investigation of Joe Biden he was asking for a an examination of the reason I and his son hunter Biden I believe no he said the bidens B. I. D. E. N. S. there's a any other thoughts on because there's no many of no no no no no no hold on hold on first full Joe Biden again I'm on it like you know what you're doing wait until we hear from the then we'll hear from them but I'm telling you anyone think you're a little premature you do may I say there were a lot of people who said that about many presidents I don't think so in this case but I appreciate your call my premature four one five eight zero eight zero eight ten did you listen to the case well we'll continue the discussion many of you with comments right here on the John Rothman program on KGO Ross met on KGO eight ten Rowley's in.
