Is Laziness Real?

"Susan kemp has this task. Do you think laziness is really a thing. She writes for the last year. I've been debating of laziness is real or just some concept we created in order to. I don't know protestant guilt trip ourselves doing things. I like. susan already say that someone doesn't do their homework. Maybe they have an undiagnosed sleep disorder or are chronically sleep deprived and that's why they can't focus maybe their diet is off so they're tire. Maybe they're just tired because school starts at seven thirty. Am and science says. That is stupid. Actually i think science says that early school start is bad for some people but not others are different krona types yes well. In general though adolescents tend to be later risers so the science would say that starting school for most high school students at seven. Thirty is dumb okay. So she's right on that. I'm wrong in that she continues. Maybe they live in a poor socioeconomic situation where there's either a lot of noise at home or not a stable place to work etc. Maybe they're peers. Don't value education even if they opt for video games isn't that more lake dopamine zero Rather than pure laziness. So i thought i would ask. She writes and i find this to be an amazingly interesting question. What's the answer. I love his incomes question. I think that it depends on what you mean by laziness if she is asking. Dui laziness is really a thing or a protestant guilt trip. Who's no way you're gonna say that laziness isn't real. You're the grit lady. Well when you call somebody lazy what do you think we really mean. I think it means that we don't think they're eager to put in the work. What we observe is they're not working and we are inferring. Were assuming that they don't want to put in the work. And then she's listing all these other reasons that could account for the scene behavior. Maybe they can't put in the work. Maybe circumstances are conspiring against them. There's a judgment that we're passing on someone when we call them lazy. That is about their motivation.

Why is the MLB All-Star game moving out of Georgia?

"This past week. Major league baseball announced that this year's all-star game and player draft would be moved out of atlanta. This was in response to a new georgia law around voting rules. The new voting law signed by republican governor. Brian kemp makes it a crime to give voters food or water while they wait in lines limits the use of ballot boxes as new idea requirements for absentee ballots and puts the state's republican led legislature in charge of the county election. Boards voting rights advocates. Say that this new law will greatly impact communities of color and disenfranchised many voters which means depriving them of their right to vote by making it extremely hard for qualified voters to fairly cast a vote in future elections. So why is the mlb's action important by moving a very popular event that brings tourist in to georgia. The league can use their business power to protest the new law. Way to go. Commissioner rob manfred said in a statement major league baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box. I know it's like you have so much bandwidth for serial stories. I understand this is a different serial. I'll give you an interesting fact about this serial. It involves neither grapes nor nuts. God great nuts. Greg nuts yes. How did you get great news for everybody. Great nuts shortage that you were not aware what's happening is now over. America's favorite breakfast gravel was gone from stores it due to covid related supply chain issues as well as high demand since it was winter and a lot of people were stockpiling it to spread on the ice when their cars got stuck. "Issue. He's gonna come up with a better better better attitu- refresh attitude man just dominate. Because he can play. You can just see in a game to be played a little bit this year. I mean if he if he take off ten pounds he just that much high runs that much so he goes to be in the same player that he was too. He's dominating the league because they can't stop. Yeah do you feel like you'll era could played in the bubble. I think they would have some of the guys would have struggled. A lot of these guys played in my era often think that they can play with these guys today but they don't realize how fast and how athletic these young men are. And how good. They can shoot the basketball. I believe that i would have a problem in today's air but everybody couldn't shoot the basketball back then and everybody didn't have that much i i i want to ask you who actually can enjoy some of these young guys plaster body as necessary. Look at the game and say that the guys imagine rebecca think the guys in the game was differently when back. But i don't necessarily think that the guys Better plants can. Yeah yeah for me. I think that's all about preference about what air you like with. If anybody is the honest these players Plan out there. Evolution is wade faster in way farther than we ever thought i mean. That's that's part is because of us. They got the see us in before us in everything. we saw. Dan remixing freaked out the way we would just remakes. was also after. They got that they got a fool library. We the people after them evolve on be able to do more to so i'm like you. I just appreciate it. And i'm always a fan of the nba. I'm not one of the retired guys. Like because i think it's a little soft. I mean. obviously it's not it's tough would rugged is it. Wasn't we played. I nowhere near you guys later with. I mean i'll still not one of those people critical of it. I'm a big fan of all. The guys not think overall like the talent league while at league wire plan for player is out of this world. At this point you got so many jews could do so many different things that you bring so much. The table like how he held up this that shawn kemp tate. I can't do that in the nba right now. Just make one as to me. You gotta make the whole everything about everything. It's like it's too hard. Just do want like that but like back. Then you guys as you as a superstar wasn't another shined. Kim running around the absolute might now is like five miles of i mean. Obviously you got your union but this is a lot of time. I agree with you. Burn of his dad relic just the talent that he would be doing Dad's seventy out here having a ball castle dead point guards teammate. So you get a little bit of everything in today's game of course like you said it's toughness isn't there but definitely ni- queued. The basketball game is still there in the will to play. You know and shit. I'm impressed with iran. His inmates i watched him in his first game. Do some do some do a couple of months. He did these age.

You could make more money than hell so you gotta wait. You're tired so after the dark. When i'm switching shoes so i ended up side of by guide looking out for them still making shoes with Make still making this kamikaze. She's still got three shoes at this role tops so. It's been a true blessed. Be with them. Twenty twenty five years still making shoes. Same shoot happening. What they did for many dairies again. That bag they put their badge on my heart like as a ball player. That's what you law you walk somebody to believe in then necessarily about that money about that but the belief that when a sponsor put that belief and they give you that shoe running shoe money it take you personally to another level of scientists. Say forty years. This is really out of work. And this is yeah. This should make me feel like let me ask you. This figures that knowing how you get that shoot i liked borrowers asks. The question like being frank right. You know how we allowed wisconsin where we ain't really had a lot of so when you got a bag you got that money like what did you do. Though both of the two young boys being walked out. That's how asked you this like Will you got traded from the you left seattle. Did you want to leave seattle or did you want to just go on and start a new journey and just see what it was. What was out there for you. Well breakdown that's a question. I'm glad you asked me that. At the entire areas man was a lot of things going. Oh now break this down fast in the nba contracts. Wasn't that great. you ask them. They weren't that great in my mind. I wanted to break one hundred million. Nobody had a hundred million dollar contract. Yet i was wasn't it wasn't about china can't make one hundred million but what was the bible of breaking the barrier. Because i thought we deserved we'll talk. So they larry johnson side for eight four eight four eighty three million eighty two million or something like that. The jerry pate inside for eighty six million something like that. The money i was asking for. I don't see how it wasn't to be able to pay. I don't time. I made sure to all these guys on my team in seattle that neutra checks in crew a leave. The team to everybody got an contract. My heart i of knew was to lead because they weren't gonna pay me a hundred million dollars j. One you only get a hundred million and i had six years left like patrick member of the first athlete. Ever who got a hundred million dollars who still had six or seven years left on his. "Time the whole. Mba was a little bit a lot because remember jordan was going in and out the league. At that time he had retired and nobody was quite sure. We thought it opportunity to play against him. There's no because he had a baseball. But i had a. I had a feeling that he was gonna come back and play. I kept telling my team. He'll come back and play so when they announced that he was comeback in play We just that was it. That was it that that gave us the motivation. We took that summer. Pretty serious. Gary myself we started taking the team about vegas clam vegas after the summer working with different things just communicating with the guys. A lot better know. We trusted georgia. That way was always pushing for us to relate to the guy latino a little bit better. gary was hired on a guy that i you guys don't play but sometimes you you look down at him but sometimes you can talk down to them because you you really trying to raise the level of play out but sometimes you do more harm than you are good. Yeah so we had education of a learning how to relate with teammates. And we did that. Yeah and it worked out fine. We got a chance to practice a whole summit get ready for for for the whole. Am plus jordan to make it. They're so hard to make it to. The championship is the hardest thing in the world. Knowing should get there and they wanna tell the team So what you. I think we had a great chance to win a championship. But they broke the team up to rally. We just needed another go around but was done decision. Textual we love the shoe game and one of the dope issues and everybody else shoes with the reebok kamikazes reebok gave you yo- shoe like like how did you feel. And how was that for you to have your own shoe and lettuce. That's wages matter of fact that comes from that slam dunk contest. Know.

The is different than us in this respect. Like you didn't win. Mr basketball and it was only. It was literally because you didn't choose the state school. So when i came when i came out the same thing habit i actually finished. Third runner-up core mcgetrick finished. Second in frank williams finished first because he ended up going to university School university never even made into my top ten. So i finished last about corey finished second because illinois was his final dispose of bay played. The favorites car with is is saying the same thing that you made alex that was out. Allegedly that was allegedly as the legendary. If let's the basketball mandated actually university of kentucky over indiana university. Which was bobby bobby knight personally off himself and told me he personally told me. There was no chance in hell. I was miss the basketball by gordon. It was in have reversed the decision or just miss the basketball award away. I go man could it could. It could have been anybody else that you decide to go to college. My pets was unlv University in kentucky at the time was finally repower houses in ncaa right no facto. The let you know after. I left the university of kentucky. I actually went to trinity valley community college only because i was going to. Unlv the next year. Larry joss was no way. You know be the next year. We will so We had chained up. You'll you'll draft process since you bet on yourself then you coming out of trinity like how many teams you had to work out for like who all you had to work with them. Taint and wait a minute though you he. He didn't get the play at trinity. Do co. so that makes it. That's what i'm saying some game take the white like how did that go on the breakfast. Damn i was entering to go into school. I didn't play ball at trinity. I was going to clash there. I actually call magic up. And i told logic i said look. I'm thinking about what hardship i might need. Some belt with this magic could be major. I left trinity valley. I moved to. La lakers tiredly out for months than the ladies. The ladies out in la for months here the lakers one to kill the championship solid thinking they go off after high school playing experience. Clearly they might try to send me overseas so it was like four days before the draft a started going out visiting teams seattle was the first thing that i visit. Ellie visit for. Five teams down down was the first thing that i visit. I was indulged. Go to seattle play for several because they had a black coach. I thought he could help me out. Were to me in more ways than have to necessarily play right away because they had dared mckee in exhibited mcdaniel ahead. Yeah where what was the feeling to be just drafted to the nba. Like all the stuff you just went through high school and all the journey that you had to go that you didn't get the opportunity to plan collins. Dan like you get drafted. "Golden. Hey. Everybody! Welcome back to the twelfth six Podcast I'm your host Collin McHugh in a few weeks ago I posted on my instagram on my twitter about a realization that, although my intention with this podcast was to help share perspectives from all around baseball, I had yet to have any players of color on the show, and that perspective being left out was a racial bias that I had to overcome. And as inadvertent as it may have been the conversation around race that's happening in our country right now makes it all the more important to hear the stories of those African American Latino players. Today's guest is a former teammate of mine. And someone who has been an active participant in those conversations on Race Oakland as utility infielder Tony, camp. We talked about black lives matter versus all lives matter. The Tulsa massacre and Tony's new initiative, the Plus one effect. Baseball might be coming back, but that doesn't mean that. Things are normal. In this country, we are still actively battling pandemic and systemic racism. I really hope that baseball can bring three hours of rest to fans all the way across the country, but when those three hours or over remember, there's still work to be done. So without further Ado I. Hope you enjoy today's conversation with Tony Kemp. Tony Thank.

"Would seem like an anomaly with kemp but he's just kept on going and right now he's i think he's second in the all star voting his numbers are not unpaced to match two thousand eleven but they certainly are on pace to have a season that looks like it would come you know a few years after a two thousand eleven type season and i don't know i can't really think of too many other players who had a peak like this took a six or seven year break in the wilderness and then all of a sudden they're back and you know we we we haven't even reached the halfway point of the season but it's been long enough that this isn't just a flash in the pan this is actually something to pay attention to right now all star thing is interesting matt camp hasn't made an all star team since two thousand twelve and that also team included the likes of derek jeter and prince fielder rafael for call chipper jones was on that all star team so that was a really long time ago the thing that's most impressive to me about kemp isn't just as hitting even when he was in san diego and then atlanta he wasn't necessarily a good hitter but he was at least so k issue was his defense stat casts the new technology system rate skies by what they call outs above average essentially how many plays does someone make versus an average outfielder it goes back three years and twenty sixteen matt kemp rink last of two hundred seventy two outfielders with negative twenty three outs above average in two thousand seventeen matt kemp ranked last among two hundred sixty eight outfielders with negative eighteen outs of average this year he's at one positive one he is tied with brett gardner he is tied with bradley zimmer he is tied with alex gordon look these are gold glove caliber defenders and the s camp has still been coming out a lot as a defensive replacement and late innings and he still plays la field which is probably the easiest outfield spot but if you are a good hitter and an average defender that makes you a really valuable player and to me that's almost worse surprising it's he just he just looks right for the first time in a long time a lot of people have talked about how he he shed some pounds over.

"So the social support you derived from your religion in your faith as one way through which religion provides wellbeing it also provide meaning and its control uncertainty about the world and that is also an important factor in determining how mature satisfied with her life and you feel that you know you're a happy person there is also you know for example religion have a lot of prescription of healthy habits for example like lifestyle habits such as not drinking too much which is also predictor of health so there turns lifestyles that religion promotes that seemed you also predict not only mental health but physical health as well so kemp all in all they're like these social and cognitive emotional resources that religion seems to bring in an organized way that how people derive greater wellbeing and and happiness that's so interesting and open curious if when you're doing your research you differentiate between spirituality and organiz religion or that together well a lot of the research showed that if you identify as a spiritual person or religious person there's like similar relationship with wellbeing and and happiness the difference might be in the mechanism because as you point out ferridge rallied he's believes and practices or not really defined by an institution so there is less guidelines incude how i you define your own spirituality or the way the type of practices you do so i think when we study mechanism we would look at it a little bit differently but in my own research i would for example interested in the experience of positive emotions my explain why both religion and spirituality or related to wellbeing and so in one study we had five hundred churchgoers tell us more about the their experience at church and reported how much they fell connected to others.
