I don't remember the emotions is that I went through. I was just getting things done right so it was mostly just you know getting out there putting posters and connecting with people going on the media just talking about the fact like that she's missing. You know trying to find a way to get her back Abbey. Had An instant bond was charming as family they both had fled Sri Lanka's civil war and abby new almost everyone in Toronto's tight-knit Tamil community especially the kids bills considerable youth violence involved in the community of that time so I remember at that time because because I remember I I can remember if it was that year or maybe the the next year but it was it was Aviva K Kannan extensive news reporting on god-like so the the the violence was started with ninety seven and some group was in those days the Vita Canon or some Metron owes most active streak things their membership was young and mainly Tamil. One group was based in the east the other in the West. Sometimes their rivalry erupted opted shootouts on busy city streets at the end of one thousand nine hundred ninety eight was when we know we were trying to sort of get the communities together do not you know continue the violence so that all happened on that time right so there's a lot of them cops. I remember that year but they had the Tampa was one of the the Tamil task force a controversial police unit set up to track the Tamil gangs at first the community was thankful for the help the community community there was a need for policing and community but it didn't take long for the relationship to sour many fell. I remember the the person responsible for the town was the and the commanding officer attending to the home and having a conversation conversation with the family and I was sitting in the living room and then I was listening to the conversation that was happening in the kitchen and you know he specifically mentioned that he has been spotted in Montreal. He was implying that she had somehow ran away and I think it was very hurtful. It full the family. The family was very clear from the get-go that you know that that she did not have any relationship. There was no sort of guys involvement I think in one way a this kind of stuff distracted the whole investigation. I believe leave that I spent some time chasing those other stories too so does Germany's family. But she she ultimately, you know, seeks out what what happened to him. And if I don't want to spoil it for people through it kind. You mean did meet time? See annihilation, really weird. Really, no one saw it. I don't think she saw it. Funchess says now, Mike. No, she did not. "I know it was only December. Yeah. So to come now all the way to the end of the summer and be like, they've found a real marketplace for anybody from twelve to forty five who are like, kinda just wanna watch a bad version when Harry met Sally, yes. And there. Gonna probably eventually hit on one. Harry met Sally one of these days and they're probably going to keep getting people like. You know, like indicating tasha, Connor, like whatever, like pitching them stuff and K Kannan or somebody is gonna make like a really brilliant rom com for for net flicks that has no shot of getting into the theaters. It's it's a unique situation because there's a lot of conversation industry-wide about why these movies don't get made anymore. And the truth is the probably get made more than we say that they get made, but Netflix willing to spend just a little bit more to make them. They're willing to give you the extra five million dollars in your budget, or, you know, there's no back end for any of these participants, but they're willing to go a little bit higher on the front end. And so, yeah, I mean, set it up is actually relatively anonymous people's, oh, he digest the Stargell in Powell is the star. You know, the, the writer and the director, both don't have a ton of credits other name, but I feel like you're right that there's like a kind of a cottage industry coming in more people lean towards it. You know the strategy before it wasn't just Cloverfield paradox. It was also war-machine no bound back movies, and it was prestige e- it was mudbound. It was this effort toward. Awards fair. And I think that there will be some awards fair later this year, but that soft middle feels like a really good thing. We've been talking about this off middle, probably since we started the ringer, we were like, when is, when is somebody going to go out and make Pacific Heights and make these movies the whether they're thrillers rom coms from when we were going to the movies when we were in our late teens and early twenties, and it seems like they've really found that the other thing I really like about these movies is they are star factories. They are actually one of the only places you can go see, emerging, acting talent, get fun rolls like you can find some, you know, there's there's rolls out there where it's like, oh, this like trenchant portrayal of somebody who surviving in a, you know, in a bus somewhere shadow to to into the wild. But like. Glenn pal get to try to be. Tom Cruise is actually pretty fun in this day and age. And I think we're seeing it this week with all the boys, both Lana Condor and no centennial now all of a sudden people had never heard of nine days ago are objects of cult affection. There's a weird like hybrid. It's a hybrid of almost like a social media star in an actor. Yeah, I feel like all of a sudden it's like, yeah, you don't know about Noah's antennae. I was like, no, I this became like four days ago and is among fifty five other things that are came out on Netflix on Friday and have like this dudes, Instagram, push alerts, convincing hive Israel, man. Yeah. So speaking of performers, let's let's do best performance. I've I've struggled with this category little bit. What wouldn't you go? I I liked your recommendation. So I I had problems with Tully, but I've had Shirley's on the brain because we just did Mad Max fury road for the rewatch Ables. And I've been thinking about her and I was thinking about how much I love atomic blonde last year. And just what are unique actress. She is to be able to do so many different things so well, and in the last twelve months, she's done straight up action. She's done this sort of prestige drama with Jason Reitman and continuing this kind of exploration into middle age with the ABA Cody that are Reitman thrown and Diablo coterie of working on with young adult. And with Tully, there were issues I have with telly..

City and we became friends and so I started to write for myself because I was auditioning for things and not getting as actor and. I tested for Saturday Night Live didn't obviously did. Not get it the, pain that's a. Hard one right it, is I know looking back I wish I would have been more prepared like a second city is very different. Than the groundlings second city it's an ensemble feel you don't have like characters. And impressions at the ready so I, remember I did Laura Bush and I remember holding Laura Bushwick as I was waiting to go on. And I did Shakira But it was the year that they got hired You're going to lose out And I was just sharing like. Kind of off the. Cuff I had no agenda I would just share the stuff. I was writing with Tina I really honestly did not think like Tina Fey, going to have a show and then she's gonna eventually, hire me onto the show and then thirty rock came, about and she was like? Do you have? Something else besides this pilot, I wrote with my friend Karen and I was taking a sitcom writing class and I. Was doing of the office I was like in week, six, and I was like. Yeah got it, right here and of course. I did not have, it I had to. Like right all night long And I'll never forget it I did all. Night long so I was in New York I sent. The script I got on a plane to LA got off the plane. And. Then had a call that they wanted to. Bring, me. In I know you go from that to writing you wrote all three. Pitch perfect movies but I'm not sure if there's a stop along the way. After the second season of, thirty rock myself and Brownstone productions. Elizabeth banks and max. Handelman we sold pitch perfect universal and so in the third. Season I was riding pitch perfect while at thirty rock and I would just, write on the subway and right on the weekends and, I just worked to be on a personal note I, was going through a divorce during the third? Season so I felt like, I was married to thirty rock and writing pitch perfect like I just threw myself into..

"The girl us all the girls use them it's worth elegance can't come on come no k cana we we we started talking because i wanted to talk about michelle's lipstick because she couldn't natural isn't that yeah she we couldn't hold it in so we started talking before god koetter so just to keep you up to speed talking about this lipstick which doesn't come off with the wad arbat gotti straight to take a sip of the starbucks come look nothing nothing on the cup and you see how wet her lips of yeah it is really really juicy now juicy from called lip sense like this make sense lipson yeah it's like a three three process where you put on the third to get it off 'cause getting is literally like combeback now do you wear to you have makeup on kitten dispensary k kannan is superstar writer director who's blockbuster movie it's perfect that she does that too but her new movie is blockers or cop locker as i like to say pitcher universal bitch the title i was like my direct toil debut i'm going to be blockers him that you came up with oh no no it was it had many names because the script originally was called cherry's when it was on the blacklist and then when i got it was called the pact and there's already movie called the pact which is a thriller yeah yeah yeah yeah and and then it was universal who they were like we have the genius idea and i mean yeah yeah and so i think when i had pitched them the movie i had talked about the parents cock blockers or that idea of like what that would be like i think they ran with it wait a minute hold back up there okay you said that the movie existed and yet you didn't write it but then you had to pitch it to them how does this process work you saw the script on the blacklist which i think i know what that is so the blacklist is like on produced really good script right so i didn't but the producers of blockers side which is point grey and good universe point grey seth rogan and evan goldberg's company and then good good versus nathan haines and they got it and then they develop it so they hired writers to rewrite it and try to get a cast or whatever and then when it got to a point where they felt good they sent it to me as an i offer direct i see then i said yes to it then myself and i hired he just happens to be my husband had been russell comedy writer and so we worked on it for a long time together and he wrote he wrote it and then and then we cast it so it's kind of like flipping house so it's like a caste barunholtz john cena and leslie mann attached to it and then we'd needed a studio so we myself point grey good universe go to different studios and then we pitched the movie so they've read the script they know who's cast in it there's an idea of a budget and then universal said yes and so universal puts up the money yeah i mean i don't know too much of the business but you know but they distribute the move your butt off tonight it may yeah yeah so i had to go in and pitch different studios and i was like this is why like the movie in this these are the themes that are you know some pitch into a bunch of guys you're right and i'm talking about young women lee gin and i was basically like you know when you think of your daughter i have a daughter when she grows up like one day she'll have a cockatiel or jonah or or anything cherries for that idea is hot hot tear yeah maybe yeah because the movie is a hit it's a bonafide thang so because because you know if it wasn't a hit you wouldn't get the chance again is that is it still like that if it had bombed i i would be just sitting in a room right i'll be back to television with me now you've been fanning small screen just saying my husband just yesterday i was like oh my gosh i didn't even think about how like they're so few females who direct rated r studio released comedy slam and.

"Women are people no guys it gets radical no but i mean i know what you mean 'cause i when i saw the trailers for it i was like oh so it's about three parents or basically trying to keep their teen girls from having sex on prom night gross like i don't wanna watch those be vilified for having a sex drive but the film actually is really smartly done it's directed by k kannan who wrote for thirty rock and wrote the pitch perfect movies and it's done through this lens of like it totally recognizes that they're over reacting and actually and i won't get into but one of the parents motives for why he doesn't want to daughter have sex promise is like very specifically smart and and he starts off being the guy who's like hey we just need to not get in the way of this don't be it's it's it's refund subversive the guy you would think in the traditional moving like this from the eighties that would be the most screw up yeah yeah yeah i really thought that was very smart yeah and i thought oh the teens in it are amazing it's it's a movie that they keep promoting his lake there's byron hosts john cnn leslie mann and they're great they're very funny especially being globally man has like a physical comedy section that i was in hysterics over like the team contingent in this is amazing they're really funny and super charismatic like the girl who plays john seat daughter there's one part where she comes down and greets him by giving him a chest bump and immediately makes him uncomfortable because his little girl has grown boobs and i was just like i felt so connected immediately i was like this is so funny and like there it's just so good across the board and i wrote a piece for that also tweet out about one of the supporting players ramona young who's also in santa clarita diet who i thought was so rate in this like everybody it's just fantastic it's a really funny very sweet feelgood movie that's also super raunchy i agree with all that i came out of it just feel like i had a great time i mean it's no it's no game night as far as i'm concerned something game night is the best comedy i've seen this year but man it actually is.
