"And good performance and it look good and they'll play the day game today. James welcome in. It's great to have you. Let me start this off. I and it just is on my mind about. Because i think people have an idea that they think they know. But maybe they don't is justin verlander lander any chance he pitches this year for you guys unfortunately no And jv and i talk a couple of weeks ago about this. He actually reached out to his doctors and surgeons and ask them you know. Is it something i can do. You know i it could i. Could i come back Even in a relief role You know october if we're lucky to get that far and You know they told them just with the data the surgery where he would be in the progression. That's you know. could he do it. Yeah but it would. it would have tremendous risk Just for the efficacy of the of the surgery and everything else and so. They advised him You know strongly against it So unfortunately no. But i think it says so much about justin as a competitor and as a teammate. That that he's the one that was asking these questions. He was the one pushing thing. I wanna come back. i wanna help. I want to try to get these guys over the finish line But unfortunately with the with the medical direction that he got something that we have taken off the table james. I have so much respect. I know you to for his grind at this state. You know at this stage their career. What else you've got approval for him. Maybe that's the reason why feels like he does so moving past that. How good can he be starting next spring as we move on when he's healthy. How good can he still be. I mean. I don't think there's any reason to think that he won't return to the form that we saw here at starting in twenty seventeen and You know he kept himself in tremendous shape And he's taking this opportunity while he's been rehabbing from the surgery to get himself in tremendous shape and really rework his body and so. I don't see any reason that he couldn't return to the cy young form that he added twenty nineteen. I'm sure there are people who are going to say because of his age that they would expect that he wouldn't bounce back but with his work ethic the way he takes care of himself away that he focuses the way that he competes. I don't see any reason that he wouldn't return to the form that we saw a couple of years ago. James click as-as gm here on seven. Ninety shot sows berry. Show.

"The first since Justin Verlander against Toronto. Back in 2000 and 11. No, no, no, no, no, no, no! Whoa, whoa. Yeah. E love the No. The Frank No, no, um s Oh, yeah. There you got, there was I mean, he look, the thing with Spencer Turnbull is he's always had this stuff. It's just putting it together and he finally did it, which is awesome. Speaking of putting it together, You know, I was putting it together. The U. S. P B o United your professional Baseball league. A shortened season last year, and now they're coming back in and look the Andy Appleby, who owns the whole thing, Uh, what's your favorite part of bringing people back to the ballpark? I know you're a big baseball guy, but in terms of bringing everybody back in for this season, what are you looking most forward to You know, Chris, I really miss the smiles. I know that sounds crazy. But you know when you have a business where everyone who comes in smiling when they're at the game, they're smiling. And when they're leaving their smiling, it zah really wonderful thing, and we had a little bit of that last year with our 100 or 200 fans. But nothing like this year when we're hopefully going to be back to normal. Yeah. I mean, I don't even think you played 40 games last year, and you know, just with everything surrounding Covad. It was just it was. It was a tough situation to be in as a business owner and operating. Ah, league. Um, so with that being said, now you're getting back to normal. Here. You're getting you're gonna get people back in the sands, Which is cool. What's your plan for folks coming in? Like, what's the what? The protocol is gonna be. Yes. So we're still kind of working that out, Chris, you know, last year we had a 224 page covert protocol program. Believe it or not to 24 pages. Yeah, 224. Pages. You know for employees, customers, you know, we had temperature checks and all of that kind of thing this year. Of course, things are changing so dramatically. There might be a real lowering of the restrictions here in the next couple of weeks, or maybe no restrictions, which would be our druthers. But right now, we don't need to do temperature checks Mass are optional on and we're hoping that we don't have to do the six FT of Social distance. Thing on, then we can just be back toe absolute normal. But what's so interesting when you go over there these days is and people coming again for the first time after two years, it's almost like a grand re opening. I mean, who gets a chance to, uh, you know, open their beautiful stadium twice, and I feel that way. And, of course, as you can tell, I'm more of a glass half full guy. It's great, because I mean, look, Jimmy John's field is a beautiful facility. You cannot really good baseball toe to show the people. So, um, what are the expectations for for the for the games this year? I mean, this is gonna be it's gonna be a lot of fun and write your kind of bringing it back for a second round here. It was like a soft opening before. Now, the game's really gonna get underway. Well, exactly. And, you know, people are seeing it and they're saying, Oh, my gosh, a baseball field And as we know, you know, when you see a baseball diamond, I don't care if it's a little league field, you know, you start to decompress as human being. Things. And, uh, but, you know, we actually have a slogan this year, Chris bringing back the fund and 2021. So even before all these restrictions were lifted, we are. We made a commitment to our fans that we would still have now. Fireworks every Friday night a live band every Saturday. We have a 250 person, strong dance crew who really couldn't perform last year because we had such a limit on people. Um and what we have are bad dog back. Whiffle ball field magician, you name it A Xeni. One knows it's much more than just a baseball game. But I think you touched on something interesting if we were having this conversation. Five years ago, I would have said Hey, if we can get one or two players signed, I'll be happy. But interestingly enough now we've had 38 players signed, including Randi dot net, could just signed a $10 million contract. And if he was on the line right now, he would tell you that there's no way he'd even be playing baseball today. Right without the advent of our league, So it's it's been gratifying, and one other thing I miss Chris is really being able to give back to the community. Believe it or not, we have over 1000 different charities that leverage the ballpark each summer to raise money, and they'll all be back and droves this year. I'm sure so so it's really exciting. And you know, we just can't wait to get started. Well, you know, if you need any updates at the ballpark, you know which players you gotta go to now because they've got they got a little extra in their pockets for you coming up. Went Tonto was that a tiger game the other day. And hadn't been an obviously quite a while. And I can't tell you How much I missed it. How much I missed having a beer and some peanuts and just watching the baseball game now, the magical thing about about us, PBL and Jimmy John's field, is it High level talent. But in addition, it's it's It's a totally different environment, especially for families. If you got young kids, there is no better place to see a ball game. Thing. Jimmy John's field there just really isn't well, You know, Chris because of the wonderful partnerships that we've created, it really allowed me to invest in the game presentation. So you talk about making an impact on the family unit. You know, the family can come and literally park for free. Come for $24 a family of four sitting on the lawn with their blanket, and they literally get to give their kids a multi million dollar game presentation. That is his.

"Just mashing. Cause If today is any indication, their bullpen is really shaky. I get it. It's one game. But that was my concern coming into the season is that their bullpen is going to be really shake, even just tuning and Justin Verlander. Out for the season for the Houston Astros. That's about his That's about is pennant race division race changing Ah, development as you could have. Let me die. I'm trying to think of the other names that change a pennant race or divisional race. As much as that does. You know, Cole? The Yankees didn't have cold last year, and they were still pretty good. You know? So you lose Cole, you know is my guess is that open the door for the raise and the a leased the Red Sox aren't what they used to be. The Blue Jays aren't even playing a home game this year. And the Orioles stink. You know who else is there? Some would say Mike Trout Mike Trout's played in like four playoff games in his life. What's the ceiling for the Angels that that that's on a team that can seriously sit here and say we're world serious contenders. I guess now they could seriously say we feel like we can steal the division. I mean the big winners in this development, the Oakland A's I think already on a team that was good enough to compete with the Astros in a short season for the division. Door's wide open now, man. Justin Verlander going out for the season. You know for a good team. The Astros were really heavily relying on Justin Verlander. The two great teams have death. You know, not that the Dodgers were expecting David Price to be their ace, but he's a $30 million starting pitchers that success he quits the season and you barely even think about it because they've got Walker Buehler. We've got Clayton Kershaw. They've got a ridiculous line up. It's weird because the Astros were in sort of that kind of not middle ground, but in terms of competing for a world Siri's that sort of first team outside the really, really elite teams. Where? Yeah. I mean, when everything's clicking, that is a hell of a team. But, boy, you just remove this guy, this guy or that guy. It could be the world. Siri's aspirations could fall apart. And when it comes to this guy, this guy or that guy Verlander. Is this guy? This guy and back? I Capital letters, Big font. Period. Hard stop. Man. That's big news. I would imagine that's going to come up with my local show here in Houston tomorrow. Justin Verlander out for the year with an elbow injury. Eight by 5 to 12 For CBS the number to get in Interesting tweet from somebody. We've been talking a lot today about Thie Jamal Adam's trade. And I've been bringing up these names of guys that got traded for multiple high picks, either two firsts or a first in the second case of Odell Beckham, a first in the third. Someone brought up Make a Fitzpatrick, which I think is an interesting name to bring up because he pleased he plays the same position as Jamal Adams, and he didn't get traded for For as much as Jamal Adam's got move for, you know that if I remember that trade correctly The Dolphins gotta first. And like 1/6 or seventh for making Fitzpatrick 1/4 and 1/5. Something like that, like you know, there there was some day three shrapnel traded back and forth between the two teams. At the end of the day. It was really Mika for a one So not nearly the price tag that Jamal Adam's Wass And the listener brought it up on Twitter. What about the make of its Patrick portrayed and I would say that it almost feel, Irfan. I feel better about that trade than I do. Then I would if I were a Seahawks fan right now. I'd rather have make a Fitzpatrick for a one Did Jamal Adams for two ones, What amounts to about two ones and a three. They're about. So It's It's just It's interesting man, the market that the NFL has become the currency. That draft picks have become I mean, we've spent the show talking about the trades that have been made in the last less than two years. The Khalil Mack trade is less than two years ago. And those air six names we've been using on the show today. They've got traded for multiple high picks. But that doesn't even take into account make Fitzpatrick who basically got traded for a one, um, a Marquis Cooper traded for a one It's It's fascinating stuff, man, so we'll see. I said my piece on it, But I know I just think of all those trades. The Jamal Adam's one is one If I was if I were Seahawks fan, I feel I would not feel good about that trade as Rams fans could feel about Jalen Ramsey just because I think they're both great at their jobs. But Jalen just plays a more important role. I think I wouldn't feel as good about the Adams trade as Texan fans should feel about the tonsil trade because he plays left tackle plays it well protects to Shawn Watson. There's a lot that goes into being a left tackle. And I think when you have a quarterback like Shawn Watson, who's taken so many hits over his short career So so there's that and then you know the other trade. You know Khalil Mack in Chicago. You know you, Khalil Mack, but folds is your quarterback. Right, So that'll be a big topic. But again if you're just tuning in, I think the big news in baseball Justin Verlander. Out for the year with an elbow injury is 37 years old. The Astros signed him to a two year, $66 million extension, so he's still got one more year left, as does Greinke. After this Verlander's A guy who is recently is the past week or two. Has been intimating that he Hey, wants to pitch into his mid forties. Elbow injury.

"And you know it was a near Washington so really happy for him. Let me say this again 28 scoreless dating back to last season. He is the reigning Two time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom's best pitcher in baseball, right? Can you really argue it? Rick Sutcliffe on Friday and Fitz Simmons, a combination of Greg Maddux and John Smokes. He's the power guy that's mostly could be. He's the strikeout guy that he could be, but it is also the Greg Matic stop guy that could get through five or six innings in 50 or 60 pitches. You know, he's just kind of the whole package. He's competitive. One thing that I love about watching him is that you know he was laughing with Freddie Freeman. After you walk him in the first inning. He's having fun with guys in the dugout. But then all of a sudden when he closed that slab, I mean he's all business. Here's the one number that I'm not. I'm not what you'd call a stat guy. I don't if I throw numbers out, that means that I run out of things to talk about, But the one thing I talked about on sports in earlier today, There's only been three guys to win the roof of the year and multiple Cy Young Awards. Tom Seaver, Justin Verlander, Jacob deGrom, Sutcliffe on How important player like to Graham is to the Mets and baseball in that straight talk wireless no contract. No compromise. The Braves, meantime, without their top two catches, Tyler Flowers and Travis d'Arnaud, both players showing symptoms of the Corona virus, Flowers and Jornal again testing negative after having tested positive but do not travel with the team because they had symptoms. "I mean, even even the you know, even the really short reliever. Guys. We don't see him Go three days on the road, maybe a couple times a year. I mean, there's there's teams out there that don't let any any of their relievers go three days. And now with this being a year that maybe that's different, maybe a little bit, But I just think that with With how all these organizations trying, you know. Keep everyone healthy. Keep everyone on the top of their game. I don't think it's really gonna have that big of a difference. I know there's been a lot of talk about starting pitching. Starting pitching is going to be so far behind. I don't think the pitching is going to be much different at all because the reliance on bullpens Has been paramount. For what? The last 456 years, maybe even more than that. I mean, starting pitchers just don't go that deep. Yeah, when you have you know, when you got into Graham or Verlander something. Yeah. Those guys were going to go. They're going to go. You know, well over 200 innings, but you've got to remember who led the National League in innings last year. Well, it was Strasbourg at like 2 13 No, that's not really that big of a number. I mean, it's a great season for him, but it's really not that crazy of a number. And so I don't think the pitching is going to be that much different than what we saw in 2019. Interesting. Is it true that in like, 91 92 when you're with the Braves, thatyou were tipping pitches, by which way your mullet was facing. Oh, wow. I would have time to myself right there, you little liberating watching these game when they show the classic games for the twins with Muller was outstanding. Allah had 80 mullet game in the early nineties. It was great wasn't really right. That was. Yeah, it was it. OK, Billy Ray Cyrus type. Okay, good. Gotta go back there with playing in Atlanta. You know it was all stringing. Hey, listen, we're talking earlier at the top of the show, Mike. How much you know I have watched Garrett Cole for a couple of interest squad games, and it's so much fun watching compete. And even interest squad games. You got to watch him up close the last couple of years in Houston, your perspective on on what it's gonna be like I'm just looking at same boy. It's gonna be fun watching him pitch 12 times this year and I was only 12. Not 30 but What's your perspective on watching the competitors that we're going to see in this short season? Knowing what you know about the Yankees, the environment in the expectations? Absolute stud. I mean, he is. He's one of the best pitchers in and just the raw stuff. And and he was. The crazy thing is, and unfortunately, you guys are going to be able to get in the clubhouse and get to know him. He is a big time baseball nerd. Okay, well, I found that out. Yeah, he is always tryingto figure out. You know what is the approach? How would you face this guy? How would you face that guy? Um, and it's really he'll. He'll kind of ask anybody that he has any respect for. But you know what's crazy about him is is the velocity is just ridiculous. I mean, he carries 98 all day long. It doesn't matter if the first pitch or 120th pitch. But the effort in his delivery looks like man. He's out there throwing batting practice, and then the ball just explodes out of his hand. No, it was it was fun to watch him. And then you gave Justin Verlander last year go back to back. His Javy would throw hard to now. J B is obviously much older, but you know, J V is a He is a max effort. He looks like he's throwing hard and Garrett, Man, that ball just comes out of his hands so easy. And then you, you know, you mix in the curve ball and slider. I mean, there's a reason why he got the contract. He's the best pitcher in the game. He's in. He's in his heyday, and I think he's going to do this. He takes great care of himself. So I think the velocity it may come down in a couple of years, sir, but this is going to be a guy that's going to be able to do it for a while because of command of the off speed stuff. That's that's great to hear, you know, swimming and I were talking a little bit about that before that. It's great to see guys like that on Jacob deGrom, who I get to watch on. Little basis to you know who could and again they're not going to do this because of the type of people that they are, But you you could throw your hat out there every now and then. It just kind of okay. You know this? Here's another game. I'm going to go get it, but they don't You know, they get ticked off when there are base runners, you know, right if they even if they go out there and pitched seven innings of three hit one run ball, you know, they get ticked off. How can I do it better the next time. It's great to see guys like that, you know, really put in the time. You know you're going to see Garrett walk off the mound after having a dominant inning and he's going to be talking to himself because he didn't make a pitch that he thought he should have made. Or, you know, the ball leaked back over the plate or the breaking ball state in the zone when it wasn't goingto supposed to be in the zone. And that's the perfectionist that he is. He was a pleasure to watch, man. He really wass and and then getting to know him. Ah, and and just his his work ethic and just how much he loves. I mean, we hear it all the time that you know this guy's the ultimate competitors. You know that. That really is. Who? Garrett Cole. This This dude, just love, love, love to compete, and he's gotta drive to go out there and be the best every time he takes them out..

"Of the Houston Astros Justin Verlander on the Astros in twenty seventeen so it's partly jeans again he watched the whole thing happened he won a World Series by being a part of now you do have to wonder how he feels in this moment because the manager he's played for has been fired the GM he's worked with and won a title with has been fired maybe puts his guard up a little bit right maybe a little defensive maybe he's a little embarrassed I don't know right you you wonder a little bit Justin for landers a guy that's come out very strongly in the past against sign stealing he is an outspoken guy in general so what do you what do you think he feels about well Justin Verlander in front of the baseball writers association of America he jokes that quote everyone knows the Astros are technologically analytically advanced wow he's making jokes about the cheating scandal as he's accepting an award as he's accepting an award like a week two weeks after the punishments come down have you no shame right is there a point you look it doesn't go it clearly because to me it felt like as soon as the punishment happened it wasn't enough when you've got for later coming out and cracking jokes in front of people who dedicate their lives to baseball baseball writers other players and he's coming down just saying Hey guys just a little big cheating thing we did when we kind of stole world cheers we maybe should add well wasn't that just great wasn't that fun a good inside joke between us isn't it you remember right and cece's a bath he was sitting there and he was like this is inviting me reports so far that he was pretty pissed about the whole thing and I get that how can you not be sees a bad deal on the Yankees in twenty seventeen lose to the Astros who in the world here you gotta wonder like yes they didn't she would we be the Astros would we be in the World Series it's just it's amazing that he can come out in a venue like that in a setting like that ever violator just make a joke out of it all it tells you it wasn't enough and if I was rob Manfred I'd be embarrassed I'd be mad too but I'd be embarrassed first I mean you can't have a guy mocking you like this didn't set the precedent right so who knows how it's gonna go from here but if I look the Houston Astros they're supposed to issue an apology by the way one spring training comes around boy is that gonna be heartfelt they're gonna shine the rings they're going to walk out on the field and they're going to say yeah I'm sorry guys that you sure then the pop champagne again and look at the batter and have a good laugh we'll be all over with completely ridiculous so eight five five two one two four two two seven that's how you doing the show eight five five two one two four two two seven talk about a sixteen game season or a seventeen game season for the NFL what's better in your opinion what do you think is better for the sport I want sixteen games let's talk to rod who's in San Diego right here on CBS sports radio I'll go and what's up well sixteen games makes the most sense it's white I think moderation is always a good thing when you're sitting in a bar and you do one more shot and you know if you're just one more shot you're going to go over the edge yeah and you still doing it yeah in order to feel scared but you got to drive home going to get up in the morning you got to go to work you know well quick I played football for the time I was nine until I was twenty okay ninety pound is all the way to division one and it's like I mean you kids are smart man I mean there twenty one twenty two twenty three making millions of dollars but at the same time one more game doesn't seem like a lot I mean on top of pre season and you know playoffs and all that good stuff doesn't seem like a lot but one more game it's just I know the money's there and greed is a good thing you know where it's great seven deadly sins you know he's great to while we're at it one of the hi our nothing makes me happier than in just eating until I can't move anymore good I've been there I'm too soon you know I mean you know you're you're twenty four years old he was a young man who was just retired from the answers yeah I mean smart dude now there are billions of dollars you know I think you have like four four concussions and like two years or something like that I was I was I was you know I've already had two concussion playing football yeah any for guys like Keith who they think about those concussions it'll say is it worth it to keep playing I've made a lot of money and and they'll make more money if they go to seventeen games of the season which means their incentive to retire earlier is a little bit stronger ride thanks for the call you still reading my friend you stay greedy now it creates a good thing so here's the thing I think about by the way to talk a little bit about just Inver lander hearing held he doesn't really seem to care about the punishment that the Astros got doesn't seem to bother him a little bit even a little bit the NBA the MLB other too many games in baseball yes there's too many games in baseball there's just too much there's too many games in the NBA I've heard the idea for the before what if the NBA was a sixteen game season instead of eighty two you think of soccer what's made soccer great right part of what's made soccer great is it it's a shorter schedule and they played thirty something games so when you play that many games every game matters and it's not like him you know Hey it's a Wednesday night we're traveling the Cleveland who cares right those kinds of things happen once in a while a good team goes into a bad game they're on the road it's a three game stretch on the road and the just like you know what Christmas is in a week we're going to be playing the box we're gonna be playing the the Lakers whatever like now will will care about that game this game that not for me not for me I mean if we happen to be close to the end I'll try to turn it on I'll I'll try to go from eighty to a hundred but play full tilt the first quarter let's not kid ourselves too many games so that's part of the problem I don't too many games more feels like a good thing do you want more baseball games do you want more NBA games.

The Rays Bullpen Their Way Past Justin Verlander and the Astros

"Start with what happened last night in the trump the raise in the Astros Justin Verlander Future Hall of Famer on the Mound for short rest effectively for the first time in his entire career and you know what he didn't look right from the get-go to Tommy Fam- drives on the left Centerfield this what is hit well it is just over the wall the right of three seventy eight Tommy van has put the razor head one nothing that of course Fleming on ESPN radio he's working with Imboden who was noticing that ver- lander just didn't look right he kept stacking back off the man he was having trouble with the signs you just never looked comfortable the raise continued to rally in the first two Grou- ball left side past the dive into left field Brantley will feel the joy around third there will be no throw joy comes into score d'arno knocks in run to nothing raise joey window into the plate in the bottom of the first pitch is light into right field asking to be a hit and it's GonNa roll all the way to the wall Garcia around Third Hill score here comes Dr no he gets to go sign the relay throw is there and DR no stops turns around and goes back to third yes so they had a three early and if you looked at Justin verlander space after that first inning it was like he got punched in the Chin the Astros going for legacy going another championship this year and they're down in game for trying to avoid a game five and the top of the fourth inning. The Astros rallied your Don Alvarez bonded the gap and what happened after that was amazing breathes out and throws line tried to the Cap right-center on moved here Myrick can't get it it's Short hops the wall glazed camel to bid at third is being way Dallas for the relay here's the throw domino's got it in a perfect relay as heard on WD troy how `bout that play how perfectly they did from Kevin Kerr Meyer to Willie dommage to Travis Dr no you can't do better than that and you could see in the face of Jose altuve after he was called out like are you kidding me with that throw that is a heck of a play that textbook like you learn that growing up and it cannot be executed better than that love with the rated there yeah on Espn Radio Jim Bowdoin was talking about how this series really has been Williams's coming out party that continued in the bottom of the fourth pitch for lander to the plate on Thomas drives one deep at center field that star is getting bigger and brighter it is going on that walk it was a monster home run four nothing lead for the raise and look the story in that game was about Justin verlander future hall of Famer not pitching that l. but the race pitching was outstanding they started with an opener Diego Castio and is the game went along and Kevin cash kept calling on relievers in the when he went to a starter Blake Snell to close out the game is one to pitch is a fastball hit right back up the middle and that's exactly where Wendell is playing he's got it on a backhand he throws the first for the owls and that ends the game we are going to get a game five in Houston

Astros defend decision to restrict reporter from clubhouse

"Ago. The astros released this statement. There reporter who who vernon who has the problem with is a guy named anthony finch they say anthony finish was delayed temporarily from entering the astros clubhouse house following last night's game. This action was taken after taking into consideration the past history between finish and justin verlander ver- landers legitimate concerns about past past interactions with finish and the best interest of the other media members working the game. We chose to prioritize this when making this decision finish was that access to the clubhouse shortly after other media members and had the opportunity to approach verlander or any other player he needed. We believe our course of action. In this isolated seleted case was appropriate. <hes> greg you think earlier i actually side with verlaine ran this because we don't know his side of the story but you think that they should have let this reporter in with all the other reporters i think yeah he should have been leading with all the other reporters and no matter what he did unless it was something just crazy about his family than the free press journal of sent him down to houston if he was doing alice things greg obviously if he says some personal about his family we all been there. He should have been in houston. You know what what else might have happened greg though thinking why we're linda has a problem this guy maybe berlanda told us something off the record and this guy <hes> reported anyway we don't but that's not probably cost and not put him in there with every that would bother me and then he printed it. Oh come on. I would 'cause you the fact that he used the phrase. Unethical behavior makes me think this is not anything to do with baseball that he that this reporter was probably trying to break up in that he was marrying kate upton story and and did something personal to him but what i found odd is that that aspect of the story hasn't broken. Show happy baseball trade deadline by the way it's a lot of hype this year might be married. Baseball changed the rules so teams can no longer move players in August member. Justin verlander came over to the Astros in August. This is the last day to make a move and most of the recent World Series Champs have made some type of midseason deal think of the Astros Getting Justin burland under the cubs getting aroldis Chapman Twenty sixteen but a little more complicated this year because thanks to the wildcard. You got a lot of teams still in the race. You gotTA decide if you're a buyer or you're. You're a seller or the case of the mets. Maybe you're trying to be both so teams may be overpaying in terms of prospects because everybody it feels like needs aids more pitching in GM's are in a tricky spot if you make a move that ratchets up the pressure and could weaken the team in the future. It's about winning now. If you don't fans get impatient nothing more frustrating than having a great team and then you have a questionable bullpen or the other way around good luck figuring out all the the baseball issues here entering into the stretch run of who needs what and what they're willing to give up. You did have a big deal yesterday. The Indians Traded Trevor Bauer. They got a Great Hall in return that included Yoshio Puig puig involved in a bench clearing brawl last night the pirates and the reds go at one more time the reds get Trevor Bauer for Yoshio Puig but the pirates in reds have been down this road before and I don't know what Rob Manfred the Commissioner Major League Baseball. Does I have no problem in policing the sport and sometimes the players do a better job than the commissioner or does or the Umpires to but if you're throwing at somebody and you could hurt somebody then I have a real problem with that if somebody's ladies showboats they'll they're gonna you know Cadillac their home run. "I want to win so young for the next three years. I've already made it clear that Nolan Ryan was my hero. I am Nolan Ryan in Justin Verlander is body. And I wanna to do what he did. So I don't he's not running away from it. I guarantee he embraces it. And if he falls short of it, he is a realist to be able to say I wanted to get to three hundred I ended up with two sixty I. Ended up with two eighty I ended up with two forty whatever the number is yes, he will tell you I wanted to get the free hundred wins. I think if, if John Smoltz had that opportunity he would tell you, I wanna get to three hundred wins. There are different people that, that have different agendas. And I think the idea that we just played sound from Grinky that was authentic. I think ver- Lander is very authentic in his in his goals. And one of them is to throw ninety eight until his arm falls off and win as many games as possible. I think the challenge with him is going to be eventually as much as he wants to be Nolan Ryan. The bullpens are so good. And I understand from Curt Schilling. Randy johnson. Look, you're coming out here to give the ball to that guy. I'm I'm Justin Verlander. I'm better than that guy. Is that these bullpens now are becoming so effective his case in his argument as he gets tired in a six or seven? Inning. And it's a two to ballgame is going to be falling on more and more deaf ears, and I think that's going to be his challenge. But techies in the right system. He's on the right team. They score a lot of runs. He keep prevents a lot of runs. He's in line to pick up a lot of wins the way the Astros are currently built. Yeah. If he was forty three years old and had a more Winston ago, he would find a place to pitch. You know, he absolutely would do the Bartoli Cologne and do what it would take to get to that number. That's that's how he is wired. All right. We'll have fun and Omaha. Carl. Thanks for doing this. You guys. Thanks about. "Two and a half rounds of the playoffs. Won sixty plus games. I mean yeah. They kind of had a decent resume. So, yeah, I thought they were unbeatable and then after watching this three game losing streak. I'm going to actually know what I'm going to stay with my prediction. The bucks will win the final, drew games, even even if the do even if they do make it to the finals. I think that having seven game series. They're completely out of gas by now. Just lost three straight. Great. I mean or do you think they're just going to bounce back after ten days? Rest for Golden State are just coming right off of game seven, do you think that's going to have any impact, you can look at it from the other way you wanna be fresh, right? You want to I mean, you look at fresh from the perspective of rest or fresh from the basketball, Sam point where you want, you want to be enga- mode, and the warriors might not be in game mode. So you can look at it from both perspectives on that. So I wouldn't I, I don't want to dig, too deep into the rest part of it before we hit our break Justin Verlander. We came back from Houston, Detroit. He said that, when Jeff rigor of ninety seven one the ticket asked him. How key was that rest period when he was when the Astros lost in the World Series, he said he would rather just have a day or two of rest. Not sit out a week. A week and a half a different for bait. Yeah, it's very different. I think I think for baseball, you've been going this way for Andre and sixty two games plus all the plane eighty game. Yeah. And you're used to this. But in basketball, there's a lot more wear and tear and you wanna get some rest. That's yeah. And that's a big part. It's completely different game. So I think it's way different from baseball the basketball. Yeah. When we come back from this break, we'll put a hold on it for now, gentlemen, we'll become.

"I confess I had gone to bed. I wasn't aware until I got up four thirty this morning and saw the the highlights and got to read about the no hitter pretty cool night for Mike fires who to me the Pitta me of journeyman. And I really mean that with great respect he's had a terrific career nine seasons. Four different teams era over four. And yet he joins us group of pitchers who throw in multiple. No hitters pretty cool night. Yeah. Pretty amazing. What is he a game under five hundred in his career? You know yet? He toys this list of guys with two note. Hitters, you know, Justin Verlander is one of those among the active pitchers. Yeah. Amazing night and the game started late. So for those of us out here in the east coast. It was what two thirty in the morning, I think when that game ended, but a lot of fun. A lot of fun. And look every no hitter. It seems has one or two amazing plays. I mean, Mark Burleigh with the perfect game. Remember, twain wise, I think that probably was the best player ever made in a in a perfect game. I think you put that at the top of the list, he had these two unbelievable place for made back. Toback Laureano gets a lot of attention because his took a home run away from Joey Votto. I gotta tell you between the two I thought pro Forbes catch was the more incredible of the plays. What did you think? Yeah. Those were in the sixth inning back toback pitches. Actually. Yeah. Pro far on that little blooper in man's land down the right field line in Carl farmer was the batter diving catch and he kind of had to make a last second adjustment. I don't know if the win got it or whatever. But yeah, really, you're right. Laurie. Atas catch was was great. It did rob bottle of a home run. But it wasn't necessarily a spectacular play. It was very good. But pro FARs play. You know, I don't know what the hit probability on that as but it's pretty high just a just because where it was located just which would those two plays in your eyes was more difficult more difficult. I'd say pro FARs more impactful leery on us lorry-owners me. Franscisco and my Ramon. But let's face. It the hero the night. I felt like was Bob Melvin the Oakland manager who just as you could see in his face and that press conference after the game he was tortured by this whole situation because fires pitch count was really high. It was at one hundred eight after seven innings, and that's why Bob Melvin went over to fires in basically broke every rule. That is always been observed about no hitters in progress. You're not supposed to talk to a pitcher. And he was dead on us with fires in telling him. Look if a guy gets on base, I'm taking you out of the game. Here's my fires after the game in the press conference talking about how he felt after that conversation. Yeah. It's it's always it's always tricky. You know, they in a game like that. When a guy has a bunch of a bunch of pitches. And you know, he's definitely looking out for my health and he's looking out for the for the team as well. You know, we're trying to win that game close game. So you know, I thought you know, the game if any runner got on. I was going to be coming out just with. All the pitches. I had so, you know, I'm just really thankful for him to leave me in, you know, trust to me, and I told him. No, I felt great felt like everything was working. So it wasn't. It wasn't a matter of, you know, being tired or whatever it was. You know, I had a gentleman at that point. But just trying to stay within myself and trust vaguely behind the pay behind the plate in his pitch. And it's amazing how the standards have changed over the years for the number pitches that are acceptable. Because Dave when I first started covering baseball. It was not unusual at all to see a pitcher hundred and thirty pitches..

"Swung on and head of the at eight route that goes. Three run home. Run down town goes raise up. He is a three run. Field and the aggies down four three six four lead. Love that. Call all the Yankee fans to which is always the case in Baltimore specially over weekend you get weekend series down there. Same thing. With the Red Sox the Phillies play down here. You have a lot of met fans. Especially don't go down there, very often in that was a great call because that was a big moment yet, you know, you wanna win series. But I think because they lost the series of Yankee Stadium. I think the Yankee fans needed this. They wanted to just pummel the Orioles especially going into a series that I can't say it's a big series because it's so early it's a fun series. It's a test. It's the Astros there your rivals. Now. In a weird way the Red Sox number one rider to now. Those are the teams teams you gotta get through. No doubt. You're seeing a very familiar face tonight in Justin Verlander, and so. Astros Yankees, even in April. It's fun. So I think going in there with a winning streak feel good as a Yankee fan. And we've said this. They just have to survive this. They have a lot of areas still a capable lineup. So go on when the a phrase is going to like this these injuries could be a blessing in disguise if this kid's going to, you know, now, you're going to see what he really is. And this is what he is. Absolutely, absolutely. We'll come back. We'll get your calls and the Mets at eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six I got to tell you about this brand.

"Guys. I work junior of American choppers built the network of bike, and it is awesome. So the. Never been a I'm not a motorcycle guy. I've never I've never even been on one. But this thing was pretty cool. Well, that's all right. So we begin there. Now, let me ask you to as we see the Justin Verlander tweet from yesterday. And I'll read it for those who haven't seen it a hundred or so free agents left. Unsigned system is broken. They blame quote rebuilding. That's bs. You're telling me, you couldn't sign Bryce or many for ten years and go from there seems like a good place to start to rebuild the me. Twenty six to thirty six is a great performance window to that's the tweet from Justin Verlander how how how opposed are the two sides on this off season of free agent signings again for a second straight year. How big of an issue is this get you know, what there's so there's so many layers to pull back from that tweet because I think for me. When he says the system is broken. I'm not disagreeing with them from the players standpoint. I can understand the frustration from the owner standpoint, I can understand if I'm gonna lose one hundred games, and my payroll is going to be seventy million. Why am I gonna make my payroll eighty five million if just going to pick up five or six wins? Right. So so from an owner standpoint, I understand the teams that are going through the rebuild are not gonna invest in veteran or free agent players to make them incrementally better. I just think there there needs to be both the union and and Park Avenue needs to come together and realize that you know, it is an entertainment product. My big thing is is if you're going to try and have a luxury tax. There's gotta be some ramifications for just totally tanking. And there has been teams the cubs in the Astros that have have I don't wanna say manipulated the system. But if done a damn good job of of of tearing it down to the bones building it up and winning a championship. But I would like to see maybe a floor put in where if you're going to own a big league team, you should be able to roll out a ninety million dollar payroll a hundred million dollar payroll and make that a floor where the middling free agent, and what we're running into right now where these teams that are going to throw out a seventy eighty million dollar Pero would maybe be forced to to help out the market. And and to maybe put some better ball players on the field. I quoted this these numbers earlier of from in the day the bottom of the team. Payrolls you enter twenty nineteen. There are two teams. Pittsburgh, Tampa that are below sixty million dollars. And there are a para teams that are above two hundred million dollars. Mark, that's a wide gap. That's it's too. It's too much. Pittsburgh will tell you. They're going for it. And you can argue the point that with Jameson, Tyrone, and Chris Archer and some of the players the middle that they have that they could make some noise in the NL central..

"Pork pairs sports. Justin Verlander had name commitment issues issues with leaving voicemail. With naming his daughter Genevieve Kate Upton and Justin Verlander had a baby ten weeks ago. Congrats to them, and they named her Genevieve which. No, never mind. It always just makes me think of mouth disease. It sounds like ginger. Vive gender gen-. I don't like it. Okay. Gwen aveer Gwen of your better me to they went back and forth on it forever. And they were still going while they were in the hospital. Genevieve was always Cates. First pick at the name. But she ultimately left the decision up to him, even though it took him forever to buy into it. First question. Actually, let me tell my dump story first. And then we'll talk about real life stuff. I was reading. I went down to read it wormhole today, which I do quite often. But I was reading this story about this woman. This woman the title of it was thinking about divorcing my husband over the name of our baby. And I read that was like it was like M I overreacting and I read it in thought. Yes, obviously, obviously. But then clicked on it and read her description of what happened in my opinion changed completely. She was in a fight with her husband because he wanted to name the baby after his ex girlfriend. Oh. No, he was still up. And so she had said up until recently. She thought he's still had feelings for her. And it was a problem at the beginning of their relationship. But the problems are over now because she moved away. And he wanted to name the baby after her and the woman was like absolutely not. And he was like you're overreacting. I'm not moving on this. Like, why won't you? I want to be reminded of her. Why won't you let me name the baby yet divorce him? And so at first, you know, when you do these red things, you're like, okay, you're making this up..

"Red Sox come into this ale with a league best one hundred eight wins and take on the defending world champion. Houston Astros who finished with one hundred three wins. It's only the second time in baseball history that two teams with at least one hundred and three victories have met in the playoffs. The only others were in the nineteen twelve and nineteen forty two World Series. Houston features a superior starting rotation and bullpen led by starters. Justin Verlander and Garrett. Cole while Boston has a powerful offense. Led by presumptive. AL? MVP Mookie Betts who became the first player to hit thirty homers and steal thirty bases in the same season.
