LEADING OFF: 9 of 16 playoff spots open going into last week
"Need do. Steve Baker is Goa eight. No. When every game at home this weekend and you're sitting there at the Bay Area Chevy dealer Sports desk would say they're in the playoffs. I boiling to bet on it. Yeah, You know, you never know what could happen. The Giants probably have the best schedule of any of the teams they're battling with to get into the postseason. The Giants after that 14 to 2 win an Oakland yesterday, their first win in six games against the A's fact they have been outscored 42 to 16 in the first five. They play a four game series here against Colorado and that a four game series there against San Diego. Cueto against Marquez. Tonight. The Giants are tied with Cincinnati in Milwaukee. Right now they're all of the 500 mark. There are half a game back of Philadelphia in the wildcard race. Two teams make it The others Don't Although six teams are in fact separated by just a game and a half, fighting for four spots, including ST Louis and Miami, it will be fascinating. To see how it turns out the Rockies air virtually out of the playoff funds, and now it looks like they won't have Nolan are Renato for the entire last week of the season, he has been battling a left shoulder injury. And then the Padres second best record in the league, already clinched a playoff spot. Overwhelmingly, it looks like it will be the number four seed, so they BB. Maybe resting some of their regulars in those final few games. Philadelphia finishes with seven on the road have Washington The Tampa Bay Milwaukee has ate on the road and Cincinnati in ST Louis, Cincinnati, three home against Milwaukee, three on the road against Minnesota. Me time. The A's the magic number to clinch the American League West remains at one. They're off today. They play the Dodgers tomorrow night, but they can clinch it if Houston loses in Seattle tonight. The Astros got some very bad news in a season full of bad news in terms of injuries. Justin Verlander, announcing this morning he will undergo Tommy John surgery, felt some pain in his elbow, throwing off the mound in a scrimmage a few days ago. Had it checked out and the consensus was Tommy John surgery. He was hoping to get in one start this week and then be ready for the Astros in the postseason. That's not going to happen at the

"Astros owner Jim crane at this a press conference yesterday wants to move on from everything in the sign stealing into twenty twenty we cannot change the actions of the past but we are fully committed and moving forward in the right way now he had the comments about not believing that what they did have any impact on the games then would say well I didn't say that even though we did say it towards the end of one of the reporters I did challenge him in terms of always trying to say or not say how is it that it doesn't affect competition so then what are you guys apologizing for were put apologizing because we broke the rules what is inside stealing a distinct advantage for the header so doesn't automatically into competition it it could possibly do that it could possibly not that's around free pretty bad and this is just the beginning probably well he's not going to speak again right now there's yeah I mean that of course but I mean the the gym crane was around one really botched it yesterday right and the last one I wanted to hear from was dusty Baker there was no reason I had a need to be there he's he's still a matter he's basically taken over he's got a you know get the thing straight off with a win with him but there was no reason for him to go on and on and on and on yeah if she's as Justin Verlander spoke he says are bad we cross the boundary I think you know we broke the rules and we're sorry now what was his reaction when he realized what was going on as the you know judges everybody the cheats and now his team was doing it you know I don't wanna get into any specifics you know I think we're here today to to to apologize and as a team and you know I think this means were expressed by hi everybody here today Hey did I mention he didn't do enough looking back I can't I can't go back I can't reverse my decision you know like I said I wish I had some more and I didn't catch that I'm sorry here's basically all admitting it they all did right there always like after al Tuesday and brakeman word gas herbal in the press conference they were good with the media their water about breaking the **** out to they was good with the media there after so was Springer and Corey here is George Springer who says yeah our bad luck messages clear no we regret everything the amount of a remorse is very very apparent and and then the third with a very very obvious here was qureia he was asked about the the idea that they were using buzzers smaller or anything to the same team nothing was in nineteen nothing seventeen the way where to buy this either loses and side on the report yeah what was in the report is

"I've just running a plan extra as we were talking being the because your point about pistols inspired me so this decade i searched you could quibble with my parameters. Maybe but i searched in the playoffs us when both starting pitchers went at least seven innings and gave up no more than two runs. I figure that's a fair proxy for a pistol. There have only been ten this decade and the previous decade. It looks like there were eighteen in the nineties. It looks like there were twenty three so there are only half as many post-season pitchers tools. It's now as there used to be. Which again fits with all these trends. We're talking about but it certainly would be nice to see like a shane. Bieber versus justin verlander playoff tool for instance would be a classic example of the young pitcher who's just finding his place in the league and could be a future star against the old guy who has been a star for a while even for lander. I think his no hitter. This weekend was a nice encapsulation of the different phases of his career. I don't think we've mentioned yet. It was his the third no hitter. He became the fifth pitcher in the a._l. Era not counting a guy who did it in eighteen hundreds to that. That was a real baseball. You don't have those toss. Nolan ryan had seven sandy koufax had four and now verlander bob feller and cy young had three and don't berliners three no hitters. I think each came at a different point in his career through one and two thousand seven when he had just run won the rookie of the year he had just pitched for a team the world series the the world was open to him then he threw on in twenty eleven. Which was his best season. He won the m._v._p. That year i think he won twenty four games and then and he went through some tumultuous times he was bad for a bit then he was traded and now he's amazing again throwing his third no hitter so it's nice to see that kind of career progression pointed out through the storyline that is nice when when the narrative all sorts of all sorts of falls into place there will probably be book to be written to on <hes> on justin verlander using those three no hitters a framing device or something just in there. I just gave away a good idea and the narrative is important looking forward forward to october because as much as i am presumably most of the baseball watching public like watching the games just to see who wins and to see awesome pitchers compete pete against awesome hitters it is partly about what kind of narrative you can build out of it and when you can build a strong wind makes i think the month of october all the more or magical and the fact that we have these these anchors to work in to bring those narratives through the month is an important one as we anticipate them become all right. I think that's a good place to to pause <hes>. We sure we'll talk about the the astor's stirs again. We'll talk about colin burland heard again in narrative and so forth but <hes> <hes> think <hes> will leave it there for this week until next time. Ooh hardly summer is almost in the rear view mirror but as vacation.

"justin verlander" Discussed on Sports Radio 610
"They discussed Justin Verlander dominance. I kind of took a moment today on the fifth or sixth check, if you send mine home plate because I think he was at the game tonight. Right. Yeah. So there's a pretty elite group of guys that have three seven whole different ballpark. But I know that, that, that list gets really small with three and thought have been pretty cool for him to be here. If I was able to get it, but I screwed it up. Justin verlander. He screwed it up with a passed ball goes every way under. Took a no hitter. Seventh experts Moore's Nick to make plays like that. I don't care how superhuman it would be. He actually he actually mentioned the same thing. And I was thinking the same thing when watching that play that maybe could make Netflix. Obviously, he couldn't van Burland. Of course what was afraid to Nolan Ryan who was at the game. He was on the broadcast last night. On the TV broadcast before Verlinden or his no hit bid fell a little bit shorts in the seventh inning last night. But he's been just absolutely spectacular. They won five to one by the way, they won. They won five to one. The fifth inning was a good one for the Astros. A bad one or at least a scary one for Nolan Ryan because it lasted about thirty five minutes. Not even the inning last thirty five minutes that the bottom half of the inning last thirty five minutes, a weird feeling because ver- Landers mowing them down strike me out. Basically, two guys in ending essentially, and all of a sudden they load the bases with nobody else. Then they move runners over when they got run scored with a wild pitch. Then all of a sudden you gotta walk. So you keep you keep having you keep scoring with nobody out under sitting there forever for lender said, one of the things he does the state loses. He throws a. I thought I thought I read a medicine ball. It's the weight of a baseball. I need to see one of these tiny medicine balls. That might be fun to look at. Yeah. Furlan has a misprint. Then why would they make it like a medicine ball? Maybe be more like maybe a beanbag or something, I guess I wouldn't call it a medicine laces and everything. 'cause you think of medicine ball, you think of something big a baseball shaped Hackensack that sounds like to me. Okay. Verlinden has been incredible over the course of his last twenty five innings pitched. So the last twenty five innings pitched I think I'm taking away the game he pitched in the altitude in Monterey. So leaving that out Verlinden less twenty innings is allowed five hits five walks struck out thirty three days giving up three earned runs. All of them have been solo home runs pitching to an era of one zero six some as you get used to a situation because, you know, it just keeps happening over and over again. But we have to realize what's going on right now. Just the whole situation obviously, you add him, and you win the World Series. But just the late career resurgence of Justin Verlander has been one of the most amazing things that I can really think of I mean, I'm talking any sport. Because when you look at Justin. Orlando the way that he has pitched with the Astros with the Tigers before they traded for ver- Lander. He was probably a hall of Famer, the people who are really into baseball say he was arguably a hall of Famer he's pitched better here than he didn't a trait now. It's not nearly as long time but he's been better here than he was with the Tigers. And look, I'm trying to, you know, kneel down to the Astros, and slobber all over anything, but I, I can't see this happening if you'd gone somewhere else just because of everything that everybody says about the Astros pitching coaching and what they do for all the information they give you the fact that ver- Landers velocity. And all these other metrics have actually improved since he got here thinking about how close he came to not come into Houston. Two seconds. That's gotta be dramatized. Dramatize. It can't possibly be that slim. But I've minutes. Yeah, let's say five minutes. Within a half hour of not coming to Houston at all. Yes. And like, what that little that little sliver of time might have done to affect the rest of his career. He would pitching for a while. But he's just so nails right now. And I, I can't see that happening to that extent if he'd gone to almost anywhere else. I've actually not quite sure I agree. Yes. You, you might be right. But I almost take it from the angle of you know how a lot of fans. And you know we complain about like the moves that were almost mater, almost drafted, this guy, or you almost made a trade for this guy, and he goes on to great things. I view Verlinden like that except we actually got him because Verlinden was pitching very well, that's hijackers by the time he was traded a year and a half ago. So he got to continue that with Houston. He got even a little bit sharper than that. But I actually I I've been reading this Astro ball book by Ben writer about them winning the World Series and kind of going back through that. And I keep. Thinking as I'm reading this that man, we got so fortunate Selanne Furlan because if he didn't that he'd be doing this with the Troy or he'd be doing this somewhere else. I think it'd be good somewhere else. But I mean he he pointed out specifically the changes that they had made when he got here, and the things that they pointed out in his film, in, I think, when you marry his work ethic, and his attention to detail and all of that, and you give them the extra tools and resources at the Astros have I just don't think it could have been, it couldn't have been as good elsewhere as it is here. I mean, you Tyler Bauer says who everybody despises, and he despises us, yes, he even says that the Astros are heading shoulders above everybody else in the resources. They give their pitchers. So I think that I don't like I said, I think that Verleger would have been doing just fine. I just think that this amped up to the degree, you might you might be correct on this. So there's, there's obviously, there's no way to know those. No in a run this experiment here, so Verlaine or one of the things that we learned this offseason. Was that he's super big time into asleep because he told bregman, you've got to get more sleep bregman really started turning it on last year. It was when Verlinden told bregman needed to get more sleep in. I. What is it about sleep? I cannot I just can't take the recommendations even though it worked so well for these athletes, I know JJ watt. I'll tell you even though Vert Landry. I'll tell you. I'm laying in bed at two thirty this morning wide awake. And I'm like, what would do go back to bed? Go to sleep or force himself to stay in bed to create good work habits. But there's some part of me and it's like I'm awake enough. It's time to get to work. And now I've been banal by nine AM. I'm going to be grumpy. I'm not going to be thinking straight, sometimes it makes for good radio. But because I can't do the simple thing that young Justin Verlander can do in your defense. I think people are built differently like if we were all keeping a baseball player schedule. Then our circadian rhythms will be totally different because we getting up at like eleven in the morning or ten o'clock on a diner going to the ballpark, totally different schedule. But you will you have a farm background. You are morning person if I've ever met a morning, right? So you're early like I pay attention to my sleep, I can't force myself to get I can't force myself to get eight hours of sleep much less. Ten like these guys on weekends. I can definitely force myself to stay in bed. But you're the kind of person Seth a you're going to get up at, like four or five, and you're just going to be up. Yeah, but I feel like I feel like that's a lazy attitude by me. No, I think that getting up early in the morning, given everything that I know about sleep that I've learned from JJ watt, and Justin Verlander, I feel like that's a lazy slovenly thing to do waking up at the crack of dawn, or two hours beforehand, I feel is me not being committed enough to actually achieving things in life early bird does not get the werm early bird gets heart disease earlier on in poor performance, and make mental errors at work, there is that he doesn't have the commitment to stay in bed. There is that fear of the thing. I learned this weekend earthworm invasive species. Oh, yeah. What are they invade? They they invaded North America. Okay. Came over on ships and everything good job. I them most ecosystems here are built handle the earthworm. So kill all of them that you can question. I have on a Wednesday Mike. Seth and Paul we were. Discussing the possibility of the Texans signing Joel McCoy a lot on the show Tuesday. And all of us in this room are on board with this idea the bucks, if you missed it sign Adama can sue, so they kind of made their own swap. They cut hell they signed sue textile brought up a point that I had not really consider, which is this, if the Texans signed Gerald McCoy to a one year deal at like a somewhat bloated salary. Let's say ten million twelve million just throw out some numbers here. Is that something that would affect Japan cloudy in a bad way? I don't think so, because you're not gonna you can you're already going to you've got plenty of room to absorb Oakland or are you saying, psychologically? Yeah. It just it just logically, like, hey, they paid somebody else, a good chunk of who doesn't do the exact same thing that I do you know the same argument was made last year with the Rams when the Ramstein down consumer. Yes, people said, wow. Aaron Donald doesn't have his contract yet. And you go and sign a democrat, sue Aaron Donald is going to get offended by that. Well, then they signed Aaron Donald and gave him a bunch of money. I so I don't know if it does. It's not the same position. And I don't think that Chevy on clowney should look at it like, oh, this is a threat, I.

"Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander behind packs in our power degrom Corbin, Blake's nil. It's pretty good company. Right there. Young winners some obvious aces some World Series winners. That's a some some good competition. Right there. Gives you a lot of hope going into him going in the keys gives a lot of Yankees fans. Hope they can maybe this can be that as we need or that. I am award. Widow we need. I don't think the ink is are done either. I think they'll go after a pitcher though, if I had to Yankees are never done the off season. I think that they don't get Machado. And I think they don't get Harper either. But I do think they could get a go at Corbin. He's the potentially the top free agent pitcher, Dallas kaikal is a free agent. Like, there are other guys that may not be as big names, but could bolster their starting rotation. So. It will be interesting to see kind of where they go from here. Only the only way up for the Yankees at the moment. And again, four point six million is what they're paying Paxton. So they didn't give up they didn't acquire somebody who's eating up a ton of payroll. So it still allows them the flexibility to go out and buy one of these free did get lucky with the the money. He has. Right, right. Is he he could be worth so much more. Absolutely. Absolutely. Okay. Other than that the Oakland as they acquired right handed pitcher, Tanner Anderson from the pirates. For a player to be named later. Sounds like I don't know if that really moves the needle at all he made he was wanna know last year in six outings. So. Who knows but the one win, no losses. The as are always making these types of moves. It feels like something that may look like, it's inconsequential. And it turns out to be a big.

A domestic violence incident was traded to the Houston Astros a team that recently cut a prospect because of domestic violence and has taken a hard line in the sand that. They have, a no tolerance policy with domestic violence in fact when that prospect was cut before Justin Verlander took to. Twitter to to to to, say, some harsh things, we? Hope the. Guy, says okay ever miserable life right so done yeah this is the inevitability. That comes from the boxy of what we've seen Berliners already had to answer a question about the new locker room and what. Ongoing case says is this one See what happens but, it'll be interesting Keep plans, to talk to us Gets hearing ongoing. Case being a part of this let's remember that we're going to find out more. Details tomorrow in the trial process. So he's now the Astros problem Mike earlier you asked BUSTER only how they can come into this, process and not look like hypocrites and. He had strong words in response I don't know how they, can look anything other than hypocritical and here's something else to keep. In mind to go like that if more information emerges in this case major league baseball could reopen it and he could face and even longer suspension. More disciplined from major league baseball their stance has been all along that they base seventy five game suspension on what. They know if more comes out there could be. A longer suspension in the astronaut. The answer for that as well One kind of, salt he's been accused of. In Toronto next court appearance as Jason said is tomorrow ongoing case and what, a, position, from that side. Of it I Mike of your teammate in. This case Justin Verlander who. "The exact same thing you know they may have to face a justin verlander in a plane game could you imagine that could you imagine the season that one of these two teams has basically going to risk by playing a one game playing game now i'll take several know last night notwithstanding i was a little bit especially in the first inning but i will take him but to me with tanaka now hurt with montgomery not coming back there there's there's going to be a lot of stuff going on here for the antes within their pitching staff and i just i just they have to get a top line guy in here if they want to get through either used or the red sox in a seven game series so they're definitely going to make a move i don't know if it's going to end up being a top line guy because i don't know if those guys are going to be available is not just justin verlander every year in the trade market but the definitely going to have to bring in somebody and maybe even sooner than later i don't know exactly what they're gonna do now in the short term with the tanakh injury how they're going to hang that so it'll be interesting to to keep an eye on that but i mean right now i'm handke's cannot be sunk really buy anything i mean their issues are there and we're pointing them out but all they're doing is getting better i mean that's that's all they do is they continue to win so when these things start to creep up everybody deals with these little potholes throughout the season and the yankees have theirs but it's mordova things not a pothole i was talking about the know i'm saying everybody deals with their potholes i'm just saying like the thing is like a sinkhole right now i would also say the same thing about gary sanchez a single one it's not affecting the team but he's not it's not winning two out of three again i mean you're starting catcher who's an allstar is batting say one ninety and it's hurting them how i mean he had plenty of opportunities over the all over the weekend one out of three it's still it's still amazing to you that guys conforto and sanchez go through prolonged slumps like this.

"Adding that anyways the al west the angels could come back and take the division but i doubt a considering it's the astros they l e we got the atlanta braves leading not division with the phillies only backed by one and a half games and then the nationals have turned things around now twenty four and eighteen as when i went to the game a few weeks back there were only like ten innate they were like ten in like sixteen so they've turned their season around we got milwaukee in the central as the cubs are still twenty one and seventeen but still fourth in that division and then in the west we got the d backs and then the rockies and the giants and then the dodgers fallen off and actually they might become laugh because the padres are only one game back on them and that's just in yeah because you don't usually see the padres being anywhere close to the dodgers like you saw last year with over one hundred one season and then now you're like are the padres catching up with the dodgers and i think kershaw has had an off year this year he isn't done the greatest because if you look at stats for pitching wise yohane see him anywhere close like you see justin verlander and garrett cole had the best to averages and they're both on the astros which is kind of unfortunate and ensures her has the most wins so that's kinda sad but it works and there's gonna be a direct correlation with you know how you how you're pitching is doing and where your team is but i think for major league baseball when a lot of people are questioning you know how popular the game still is it's good for new york and for boston to be you know at the top of the division i know there was a lot of hype around the matchups that they just had over the last few days so you you know as long as the keys and the.
