"There's a great interview that Justin Robert young did recently on politics politics politics, about the toothlessness of the Federal Election Commission, who are empowered to do all kinds of things, but the realities of of their enforcement powers, leave them unable to do stuff FTC has a little more enforcement authority than the F E C. But that said you still need. A lot of political will to really go through a break in somebody up and only if someone on the government side is very angry at a particular company and pushes the FTC to go after them for one reason or another could be the current president could be a future president. I don't I don't see this really being full of a lot of teeth yet. So even this might not have any effect like at least putting people on notice companies, and it'll have an effect because companies will want to tiptoe around this. But I don't I don't think you're going to see them storming into to take right? Facebook to court break up or anything like eat on lighter. News a survey conducted by adobe estimates. The fifty three million people in the United States on at least one voice activated smart speaker. We are a nation of voluntary surveillance here. Seventy four percent of people use them to play music. That's one thing that I use mine for sixty six percent, check weather. Fifty eight percent ask fun questions like whoa. How many pints in gallon because we don't use the metric system sixty six setting alarms. Checking news searching, those are all popular as well. Shopping. However, not that popular only mentioned by twenty six percent. And that's down from the last time. Adobe did this survey when it was thirty percent back in August of two thousand eighteen the survey also found that people would like their television their car and their Sturm thermostat to have voice control, but not their oven refrigerator or washing machine. This actually tracks pretty closely to what I what I think. And how I use mine for the most part. What about you Patrick? Well, you know, I have to voice assistant speaker things which I have stored safely in a cupboard somewhere because they are dumb. And I don't use those things. I don't understand why people use them and yet everyone loves them. But I don't get it. I must be. You know? I was you. Basically that is what I want. Why? Yeah. It's I mean, I oh did you actually ask the just telling me how to use her? Right. Well, so I understand I'm in the minority here. But this kind of. Every story about voice assistance, and there are many kinds of befuddles be that being said, I if you like voice assistance, initially when I was reading about TV's in thermostats was kind of laughing it off. But it actually makes sense maybe on the TV or thermostat. It would work and nuts in another no refuge Reiter, washing machine. I use mine for my thermostat, but I do use it for the television. I have a harmony hub hooked up to it. And it's great. You just turn on the TV. And it turns on. All right. Google updated the Google home IOS app to list, apple music as an integrated service for home speakers. Although it can't be linked to will home device at the moment. Apple music was previously listed in the Google home app. In a separate limited. Availability availability section as only available on vices. So this is addressing to concerns that I've had one concern is if apple wants to be a service company, then apple music needs to be on more platforms, and certainly all their services need to be on that more platforms, but apple music, their most successful service oriented product right now. And this indicates that, hey, maybe we really will get apple music busting off of apple products. That's a good sign to me the other thing that's always bugged me about these voice assistance that we were just talking about is the walled garden aspect of them. I don't like that. Because I use an echo. I can't get my Google play music on it. I don't. It like that. If I wanna use Google home. It's like, wow, that's an entirely different ecosystem and entirely different choices..

"This to me is the quintessential tale of the mid twenties where you don't know what you wanna do, but yet, you know what you don't wanna do and auto is all of us. All a auto is auto is everybody who at a certain point it like in their lives, shattered Ottawa's, a millennial. He's no hero. He's got the outline. Came out in ninety two that young. Lesson echoed to this very day can change your life in one thing, even if you don't succeed. I okay. I think that's beautiful. Do you have a different lesson? Is it truly just that he may or may not be sixty six years old to be honest it. It reminds me that the early episodes weren't as deep as I thought they were. Regret choosing this? No, I it was very mining. I've learned a lot on lightning. Jess. To be honest, I've learned a lot about my co host Justin, Robert young, and how DP thinks these episodes are? I actually and my my my lesson is that this is the reason why you can't have the Simpsons which now I think is you a man. You can't have the Simpsons going. Are you gonna? I told you. When we have guests on the. Right. Our audience. You can't have the Simpsons that we know now which we understand to be probably too indulgent in the little comedy without the big like base broad and actually down on this. This is the moment that that that that one dimensional characters suddenly got real dept yes, to them, one hundred percent and they meant something. And so it's like if you can read anything into auto in your own life, that means they have succeeded. This is why the Simpsons is an important franchise because that's a tertiary character that you can say, oh, wait, maybe I've been a little auto and that's that matters. That really is just good writing by the way worth noting. I don't know if the opening was from this particular episode, but it was back when the middle connective tissue was just bark going through the city streets before they changed over to the sweeping rogues gallery of characters. That was the Simpsons and I feel like this, the connective tissue before they make that. Transition to where the star of the show is not the Simpsons family, but instead the town of Springfield. So parity were high. Yes, I really agree with you though. I think that's such a good point. I love that you guys are amazing. I'm gonna sing. Couple Simpson songs. You guys definitely can leave if you'd like. He said that we don't agree. You all stay for all of the songs, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you guys so much. Let's hear it for Julia and are amazing, Baden pressing editing. In addition. Let's see that ring. That's gonna come up your fingers soon. Right? Of course. You promise. I see. We're all shuttling. Now, do we get in the audience to watch this? Or if you wanna tap someone else into serenaded to you could do that or all if someone would like to be to could come here there other somebody wanna be serenaded to is there a couple of people who are in the front row right over here that would love to be serious. Come on. They wanna come on. Right nicely done. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls give me please get a big round of applause for MS l. GARRETT'S..

"A bus driver. Driver. I guess it's worth noting that actually Skinner has an arc as well in that he, yes, that this is such a dumb job. Anybody can do it but discovers a no, it's painted the button. I literally want anyone who is not me to do it. Yup. Like Skinner. There is a great gag where center Skinner literally. Center literally sits at a intersection because he is to push to pull into traffic yet for days. We don't know. We don't know. It is. It is a infinite length of time. So this episode, in addition to being funny and having great moments and having a lot of questions about how old auto is what the law is a spinal tap. What cares are real, we have, it's very, I. I really think that if if listeners our pot smokers, they should enjoy nice conversation with your friends you know have to. But I feel like it's that type of conversation, right. When you guys are listening to this in the audience, weren't you just like how higher they like. It just kept going in a very interesting way, but it'd be better. I think anyway, I don't do that stuff. I was wondering, plug. Marijuana. I was wondering what you guys individually or maybe collectively, if you wanna take a moment and whisper and share one answer, what is the takeaway message? What is the lesson from this episode? Does anybody have like a distilled essence of what they took away from this episode? I because it's for me is the fact that auto is sixty six years old. No, he's not..

"And. But there's a moment here that made me question the age again, because there's a moment when Marge's inspiring the auto to to go out there and do something. He's just watching TV. He's watching, I believe is the price is right, and he's on the TV. They're saying how much a can of corn costs. And he says, Canaccord I could go for that right now, which I think is so funny and the idea of like fantasizing a life of a can of corn. It's very good to me, but he's told like, you know, you can't. You can't sit on your ass. You have to go out there, get your license and he and Barco together and he's called an adult and he says, well, no one's ever called adult before I've been tried as one. Yeah, so me wonder, one. What did he do and then two, how old is he? So listeners? Let us know what you think. We have some ideas from the audience here. Say team twenty five. He's twenty. I say he's sixty six. Sixty ons moment is only thirty four twenty four, thirty four thirty one. There's an episode for he's if you don't remember this. There's Simpson's where Hans moment is on the radio news saying how how what is the fact that this life? What is it? I'll Kahal ISM. Alcoholism is yeah, alcoholism. It's he's like he was in a meeting and they played that joke. He's like I'm only thirty one years old. Well, okay, so yes. So it's it's affected my life. I'm only this year's. It's so perfect for cannon wears. Pisses you off to know it because it just is the China. I know and I'll it's especially bad if you're drinking a drink just like, oh no. But anyway they after finding out that he's tried as a man. We get one of my favorite moments to auto kind of conceding saying like, you know, like your dad was right. I am a bum and he was like, he didn't call you a bunny called you a sponge. And he says that spun. And he punches the wall and it's beautiful. I know that I, that we're seeing auto really express any emotion besides like being blissed out, and I love that it's like the most been all innocuous thing for him to be called, and I just love that choice of him. Like, that's, you know, basically the monument fly calling you chicken kind of move like it's activates him in a way. There's another moment of hitting. I would love if someone could do a series of moments where characters hit walls. There den win the Simpsons skaters break. You. He's busy planning honeymoon. There's there's this moment where the family is having to budget and they say that they can't get that fancy four ply toilet paper anymore, and Bart freaks out, and it's wonderful. One moment that actually wanna go back to really quickly. Mill house goes to the concert and is left at the concert. Yeah, there's a riot that is Frankie ecobill moment of him being stuck without glasses. So it's tiny little beady eyes under just a pile of. And I just loved it. They have no regard from whatsoever. Only March or members said, he's not there. They can be left out of. So Brian is the utilizes is episode Justin hijacked it from you and has taken a lot of the Mike time from you. Why don't you. To why don't you walk us through the remainder of the episode because we were at the home stretch of how this story and basically nobody really changes. Everything is the same..

"Exist. I looked it up and the first thing that came up was the Simpsons so I don't know. I don't think that they made up the bus driver song. It seems like something it's like ninety nine bottles of beer in the why feel like, but maybe they did if you know, let us know. Does anybody in the audience that you heard the song. Somebody says, yes. Symphony already singing it. Got it yet. So he has another verse that says, he drinks any smokes, and he tells jokes hail to the bus driver over there were just whoever was in the writer's room, like kind of had a good grasp on like just what. It's gotta be regional though, sir in the audience where? Yeah. Where did you grow up? Ohio, Ohio, mid west spring, rain, field, Ohio. So just because it's skip, ran a little bit the way that this happened. The reason that's driving the bus as was foretold in the Wikipedia entry is auto, did a very horrible job driving the bus. Yeah, and could've killed everybody after Freberg after when they were ten minutes late, he'd like just skidding through everywhere across town. And he slams into jeopardize Springfield statue, and then it's revealed that he's been driving without a license this entire time. He goes to the DMV Patty and Selma work and is like purposely hitting the cones and it just being a bonehead. So then Skinner takes over and this is Skinner when he's like full like Vietnam, vet Skinner. I actually like the b. m. whatever AM that you were kind of. Hundred percent. Burien is very. When when when we talk about great Simpson's writing, we often talk about just very clever comedy writing and very clever comedy dialogue. But to me, this is where this instance earned its bones in that. It's like, you don't know who the bus driver is. And then immediately in this episode, you have so much undercurrent of like, okay, no, he's a slacker. And there's a lot of lions in this episode where he's like me and the Admiral long. Like when he's talking about. Yeah, and it just a lot of show don't tell of who this guy is immediately. You know that auto is this like slacker who's of virtuoso and guitar, and is a like pied piper to Bart and Homer's like. I'm too dumb to know whether or not like this is good. But the the audience knows and this is where I think Simpson's really earns it bones as like a show for writers and over who enjoy good writing to that point. Like we get a lot of good ideas of who auto is from some very specific details including he, he's asked for his license to which he doesn't have because he never got. But he has his name on his underwear which he pulls out. It's like, oh, those aren't. Mine also get when he's getting an vixen. Notice. He's a little thick and it's just like someone changed some dope, change the keys to my door and putting fiction notice up in. He realizes that, of course, it's the landlord I land Lord says, just like there was nothing in there. So for, you know, like a jar musters. Well, I have mustard, you know, he's just that's an Owen cycle magazines which I was mad magazine because I'm an artist. You know, one one joke that I thought was very Skinner. If we're talking about like jokes that are very auto, we have Skinner saying auto, that's a pal intro. You won't be.

It also is, is that the actual time of a proper free bird as about ten minutes. This was a two for number one. He was like, this is one of the early segments of the Simpsons taking a one dimensional background character and suddenly like, oh, wait, I'm sorry. He has backstory and character, and his interesting for all these reasons. Also, I believe this would have been the first time that I heard the free bird is a long song joke before. Simpson's wanna call out really quick. So for our listening audience at home, you've not been witnessing me smooth as I can, which isn't very smooth alternate between different clips. "That's a concert baby. Does that look anything like any concert? Any of you have ever been to before. Little bit. I mean, there was a band man. Okay. I've seen spinal tap in concert, sorry to brag. Oh. Precisely the venue in practice. People's, should she. I guess it's not even really brag. It's actually kind of embarrassing. I, I was a little kid and I went to go see spinal tap unplugged so is who sticks. I don't even know what those words. Fake band unplug. She's like, technically was a puppet show featuring pile afterwards funnier. Once you've seen the movie, glad you're there. So I was pretty young. I was like nine or ten, I think, and I didn't. I wasn't thinking about like who the actors were, who went spinal tab just need about. I love spinal tap. I wasn't who was married to who or what was going on. So I went to the bathroom and Jamie Lee, Curtis was there, and in my child's break, I'm gonna need a pinkie at this point is the real things real thing we're about to pick you promise. Use the normal bathroom at the place. And it was really funny to me because of the time she had tibia commercials out. I know her from the bathroom ladies in the bathroom that seen the mazing work. She would. She had already done and with continue to do. I wasn't the fans mainly Curtis yet, but I said, Hello, I'm a big fan. I guess it was of those commercials and she shook my hand, and I was so happy about it, then I was it. And then afterwards, I was lucky enough to go backstage and meet the people in the band because my dad's banjo is featured in a mighty wind, which is. Connection to have, but basically the the guys in the band, Chris guest in Michael McKean are huge music nerds, and they remembered a specific banjo from years prior from a specific ATar shop and said, do you have that old banjo and their second kit, it belongs to this guy, and then they went to my dad's house and they gave him a small check and it was amazing. So we got to go to the show. And so. Tiba. Yeah. Yeah. So I got to meet Chris guests, and I saw a Chris gas and I said, I'm such a big fan and he said, you must be the youngest fan of ever had. I said, thank you. And then Jamie Lee, Curtis came over and held his hand and I screamed 'cause I did not know why they were together and it was the weirdest thing ever and they're just like, are you okay? And I was just like, I, I don't understand, and it's like it's okay. And then that was it. That's how the story ends. And I later realized their dating, just kind of let your kid thing. I couldn't begin to imagine. I couldn't begin to imagine I because to me, it was still Nigel Tufnel that I was talking to dating the activity lady and it was kind of like, I think I'm dreaming very weird. Like my I felt like I was in a fever. James like dad had a banjo that was in a movie. And now the lady from the bathroom. Legit slash pick. It's like seeing the progressive lady flow suddenly holding hands with Tony stark. Yes, because he was still in his Nigel costume. So. Now that I wanted that to be Infinity. That could happen if somebody can make that happen in this room, I would watch respect Tony more. Can we get to what I think is the next clip favorite part of his episode to me the the enduring moment of this episode beyond anything else. All right. As you wish record star. "That's pretty much everything that like somebody in their thirties forties tells you is great. It's a Christopher guest movie. He maybe if you don't know Christopher guest, he's the time show. Fingered, man. Oh, right. He's waiting for guffman. Rask God's on Netflix. So yeah, everyone loves mascots. I mean. In many ways. It was the grandfather of what became like the office and and and. Oh, he mentoring. Yeah, and modern family, the most necessary. Machi memory. Oh, yeah, Julia. We have never been more in. This was like my number one problem with modern family is the unnecessary use of the. Podcast, rob Reiner, he is the person who directed it and he talked about the basically, this is a mockumentary about a band that he made about made up called spinal tap. They're making fun of all the eighties hair metal bands that are super stupid that always have, I guess it's judgmental, but they handle. Earlier, right, late seventies. So it's more like Led Zeppelin. Let's Efren. Sure. What is it someone that they were making fun of in the blue Jean community? The eagles won. I the tug on forget it. I'm not here. Yeah, Florida. My name is Justin, Robert young. I'll say. So basically rob Reiner, he this great, great, great, comedy, and people after the show went up to him and said that was such a good movie, but why didn't you pick a more famous bands? Oh, shits. There were people that watched it and didn't realize that it was a parody and still managed to love it. So it does kind of bring into question why, and in what way they work. It clearly worked for you guys because you guys are no spinal tap. Was it works on multiple levels? I think at the time it was just meant to be an Easter egg. But right listeners let us know at home and people that are here, let's if the show, but let's watch this interview in the way that they are perceived here. Hey, hey, hey, Bill and Marta here. And we're backstage wrapping with a tap fellas I'm gonna hit you with a phrase that his dog gets out your career washed up yet. Here you are among the top one hundred five concert acts today. "Perfect. Any questions? No. And again, it's like this is the beginning of if we do understand that Homer goes from person who beats his child to hull. Larry, comic man child. This is the beginning of that right that you are like she doesn't sexualizing making him this constant like man, baby, and we do see later in this episode him revert to that earth that early Simpsons days kinda Walter Mathur like why you little just belligerent beater of children say that give or take, but later he becomes this amazing man, cod ler who is completely in the moment emotionally whatever the scene dictates at times. Yeah, Homer has a lot of flux. He goes up and down a lot. I've talked about on the podcast before. I think one of the reasons in addition to us as a society learning that strangling your children is bad. I think was the animation got cleaner and it became more realistic and you're just like, Ooh, I don't like this. When it's when it's like just weird, yellow blobs in each other's like, hell, yeah, I love it. But it looks a little bit like your own dad. Just like, I think it's scary now it's changed but to go to kind of like how they're portraying spinal tap. It is pretty interesting. We do have a clip of how they they do their interviews. So when you guys saw this episode, you know, one thousand nine hundred that's quite a while ago. How'd you guys already seen spinal tap? Is you already know what spinal tap was not back then I definitely saw this first and I'm like, this is an old man thing and then and then later at college I was like, I just discovered by myself, this amazing, amazing alien artifact. And then I saw this. I was going through the same. Yeah. Oh, no, same thing. I mean, I I was a kid when this episode first aired and it had to be either the first season or this season that my mom demanded that she was going to watch the Simpsons before me and my brother did. And so she got past the first commercial break and she's like, why do people freaking out about whatever stupid days go watch it now, my mom's a goal is I would love to believe that this is just because she was a bigger fan than you. That she was like trying to shut you off the sort of like an older sibling, that'd be like, this is my thing. I, yeah, like no, no, no. She was like reacting to public pressure of like kids should watch the Simpsons because it's an adult cartoon. And then she was like, I'm a single mom, don't waste my time, whatever. Like watch the thing. It's fine real quick from our audience. Who here applaud. If your parents banned you from watching the Simpson. Hey, guys, thanks shortage show. Then. Those guys in some ways. I think we're all letting our parents down by spending the night watching and discussing. I have to be honest. If I were to this event, I would say educational. They they were that annoyed that you're watching the Simpsons Eleanor d- are they that they're listening to people talk about wanting this. I would love to random applause. If you're still banned from watching the Simpsons. No applause. Veto talk to your parents. Okay. So I thought it was going to be just me. Not just in case anyone doesn't know spinal tap because I'm sure that there are youngsters and maybe people that just don't obsess over comedy in the wait a minute. Wait a minute who doesn't know spinal tap round of applause. There's a guy in the back. What do you behind the bar? Three one person who raise their hand because they didn't recognize on the Bod cast that is totally fine. It's not the same as not tipping your bartender. We're not going to humiliate you. We're going to enlighten you because final type was such a wonderful thing that you get to put in your life. Now, surely one of the best way giving you a great. You're gonna watch it and you're going to be like, I don't know if it's age well, but it's going to be great, fine. It's fine. That's..

"Why is nothing happening on the three. But I got to admit in this episode, I was surprised because they've other episodes, I guess after this have clearly couched homers glory days as being in the mid nineteen seventies when you would expect he would be hip to spinal tap and the fact that he's dialed out, we're like, I'm going to eat a sandwich. All right. Hold on. This has been a thing. Brian is very focused on the timeline of when trying to solve. Oh, I've got a major spinal tap. Hold on. Zestful fictional Simpson's when fictional homers. Shared universe, a unified time-line. I swear to God. So that is the question. So thank you. We're going to answer. Spinal tap come on now. Interesting thing. You know, it makes sense. But it is interesting because in the world of the Simpsons you've had guest stars on in many different ways. And that's kind of to me one of the reasons I don't like the newer Simpson's as much as the older Simpson's because before you would have someone come on and play a character lady Gaga come on and make out with March. And if the little, you know, I think it's hot, but I think I don't think it's necessarily funny, but it's one of those things where you kind of do wonder like in this universe spinal tap exists on ironically. Ironically, they are the band spinal tap like the movie spinal tap and so does lady Gaga. But I guess like Laverne and Shirley who has Michael McKean in it would exist, but Michael McCann's in it's a whole thing and it's it you. I don't know how fun for some people unplugged. Somebody's finally holding them to account on all the yeah, for for somebody who may run free. Free for too long. In twenty six years later, and we're finally getting to solve life's greatest mystery. Well, like for some people watching a cartoon and finding the things that are wrong with it, you know, worst episode ever type people. That's what's the most fun thing about watching TV show like I watched the Harry Potter movies again for the first time in a long time, and I just have so many memories. It'd be like, that's wrong. That's wrong. That's wrong. And to me, that was the fun. And so you know if you're one of those people that's kind of like, oh, just have more fun with it. I couldn't. This is as good as it gets. To be honest, that's actually just to the world is when the world is real enough that you build a model of this reality, the things that don't match up like Michael Mckee and showing up to different individuals. I is is a red flag that just pops up. Also I would. I would wonder in this episode if spinal tap was always the band in this episode because they are like there's nothing really spinal tap easy about this episode that couldn't be another band. I feel like there was commentary about this that I am forgetting from my youth. Do you know this? I does anyone here know whether or not it was supposed to be a different band that may be like dropped out. Unlike, for example, the episode where Homer does his version of lollapalooza tour smashing whenever where there's this ongoing thing, it was just like, I don't know, a band is at the beginning, and then they show up at the end as knowing the Harry Shearer connection that they also knew that like spinal tap fans would possibly have crossover with Simpson's fans. So they already have Harry Shearer in the room might as well just like indulge America with like an animated version. But I guess like you're going to do that then do the spinal tap fits right that they are like fully Paul back to previous or the thing like this final tap who've wa, is that they are full of themselves. They think they're gigantic like, did you do have the has been joke. Thanks in like when the radio interview. But really, that's more of a joke about how crappy radio interviews are. Right. And then veteran. They don't play any the big songs from spinal tab for for that. That could be legal thing. But I think it's mostly for me is a huge spinal tap fan is I think probably a lot of us are..

"But they have like such a unique experience of both like from a shore, still storytelling point of view in just like a show running point of view of being able to go, okay. So here's like the first chapter of what we thought this show is going to be, which I feel like is like seasons one through three or perhaps season one is its own thing, and then to three is our own little thing. And then season four, it felt like you know, everybody in the room was like, this is actually going to be something that's going to be on for a while. Let's have a little bit more fun. And I think that that's why people attributed with being the golden age because it was when the pressure was just a little less on the kind of had nothing to lose because like what comes next is cancellation. So in the face of the black void of nothing. What do you make an episode about Ottawa and also that time, and even when this episode airs I don't think anybody in that writer's room knew that FOX was going to still be a thing, and that That is. is something that like gets lost in history. Now that we are in a point where FOX's the fourth major network. Now that was that was a joke this as well. And they predicted that to like it's crazy. Yeah. Yeah, sane. But at the time they were the toilet flush capital of all network. No, they what they were competing with. I mean, it was it was married to children doing the joke about like where we're standing in the living room so we can get FOX tonight. Right? Yeah, yeah. So in addition to kind of the impact this being this episode kind of encapsulates that early, kind of, you know, this show is clearly found its voice at this point. It means a lot in terms of looking at the big picture, we could get really high and talk about even more ways. That's true. But for now, what about this episode speaks to you on a larger way? I gave you a list and I will be honest. I gave a list to Brian saying pick one of these that hasn't been done yet. He picked the first one because it was the first one on the list on this. I'll be honest. I know that had to be honest, I picked it because it had multiple victors for us to talk about the fact of the spinal tap crossover, and also the fact that I mean, they're all good. Can I tell you the thing that actually spoke to me the most is I saw this for the first time in one thousand nine hundred when it came out. But I quit my day job at a tech company to be a touring magician in one thousand nine hundred ninety nine. So as a result, the thing that that rang home for me twenty years later in two thousand eighteen is looking at the way they represent the spinal tap concert. There's no giant screens Ono projectors, no lights. It's it's it's five pieces of band equipment and some spotlights and a banner in the back. This is final tap. And now that looks weird shit. And yet that was every community college I performed at exactly how it looked. It was amazing. Yeah, it's so let's get into the spinal tap concert. This is how the show starts. We have. The episode starts was Bart, who at this stage is still the rebel, the bad boy. If you're wearing a Bart Simpson shirt to school, you might get sent home part. Simpson who the hell are you if anybody had that shirt, you know, or the like. Although this is a less rebellious Bart in this episode like like he is very much his dad son, but he is like, you know, he, he's cool and even Homer. This is a to me again, we're talking about like the like the germination of what would become the kind of Homer aesthetic. This to me shows a lot of those like a, he's cool. He says, oh, I've been going to a lot of heavy metal concerts and then, oh. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Anything to me. And then like the next shot is from his perspective as margins talking, and it's just. And then he just picks it up. I heard. Yeah. Anyway, by. Hear that joke because I think I have tonight..

"It was a cartoon of Winston Churchill like listening in on their sessions and its his ghost, and it's just like my ears of burning and my boss was in Hawaii and he called him. It'd be like, I really hate that joke. Editor for now, but we'll see how long it lasts. I think you're going to go away with a great legacy that is completely earns. Winston Churchill being flattered that he's being jerked off to by the Beatles. Town as having done. Where we, where we still on the thought of this BB m. a. Another dividing line before after monorail, bring us bring us the golden age of the Simpsons user. But before you warning. Her New York. They really made a big deal about that New York thing. Yeah. And then they did that trick where they resold the rerun with the different premise. They took like not a lot of the blonde, but like the c minus plot, we like in the tradition of Ben Hur because they were three seconds of been her joke in there. It's the Simpsons they were like, wait, there's just the New York episode that's weird. Well, anyway. I was simply saying that this is an episode that I think a lot of people forget about and it's really great, and it's it's focusing on a character that you know it's pretty early for them to be going into side characters because like as we go later, we get into, you know, Selma and different people's stories and auto. It really is just the bus driver, and it's interesting to go into a story. So early on into the show, and one of the questions that we've had throughout the podcast is how old is auto and you kind of get. We actually had this conversation last night when we were watching the show. This writ large about this episode. I think that the golden age of the Simpsons to me is more like Julia. I go from like as soon as it gets its own voice from the Tracey Ullman show, it became famous anything that you like, yes, comedy nerds can say that it's comedy legacy comes after season four, but that doesn't happen in less seasons, two and three happen that really captured the nation's attention. And there are elements of this show that are really the germination for sets. It sets up everything that comes about. That's actually really good point. Because specifically you could tell there's a bunch of jokes that that in twenty eighteen sort of seem incomplete like, well, you were just transgressive and it's like a weight. Nobody was doing yet. Invented that kind of joke. Right. Well, I was gonna say so office. Yeah, just I'm. There was a harsh debate. Justin, I'm with you in that where like it's I mean, let's think about like the Simpsons legacy and like how there's the longevity of this show. I mean, it surpassed all other scripted shows, and I feel like a lot of people sort of, you know, put it up against Saturday Night, Live for being like the two shows that are going to be on till after the apocalypse, but it's a completely different animal. And usually like shows TV shows don't last longer than like five seasons if you're lucky. So they're in their second season third season. And if you read any thing from the writers where their heads were at during that time, they constantly were like, we're gonna get cancelled. So they already felt like they were hitting their peak, and that's that's crazy idea. The idea that what we perceive as them just beginning the expanded Simpsons universe is actually to the writer's room like, well, we're really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Now episode with him. I don't know. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah..

"The blue hair lady. Selma booby BART's hand. Just overly formal in a way that only a robot could. Right, which is the future. The singularity is near okay. In the episode, what if I just got really political in the middle of this, it's good. Ted talk, actually, I need an audience and I crave it. Okay. In the episode Bart decides that he wants to become a rockstar after attending a spinal tap concert. So Homer and Marge, his parents. Buy him a guitar. He shows the guitar to auto the bus driver. All right. Dr. A man bus driver mandala bus driver man who plays it and consequently makes the children late for school. Man. This is like I a cliff notes version for this one racing to Springfield, elementary auto crashes the school bus and is suspended until he can get his license back Bart, who respects auto far. We'll take a stock clear to me who auto is in this scenario. Yeah. Your lab auto, the bus driver, not technically the bus driver in this situation. It's a good thing. But regardless of the situation, Bart respects him Bart Homer side. Are we all kind of art. How's this working for the man who's never seen the Simpsons. Homer, king of the animals. Nine. I also love that you're the same gentleman who wanted me to follow my dreams in wanted my mom to know that earlier you cheering me on and a very positive way. I appreciate it. Okay. So we're, we're getting deep. Parts. Simpson who first of his name l. invites him to move in with the Simpson family, the Simpson family, what Bart is part of this. It feels like he's outside of that. I tell you who writes these and if it's any of you in the audience, I will yell read. Yeah, isn't that isn't that done? It's ties done. Okay, great. So that is more or less the the episode kind of is pretty much the only story. There's not too much of a v. story that happens in this episode. I feel like we talk about it a lot. A lot of people don't give the earlier Simpson's a lot of credit, and I think that it is so fun to go back, especially if you are used to season four through eight episode, which is the best episode of anything ever except for the next one. Then that one's better than they were having this debate backstage perspective. This episode is at b. m. RAM before monorail or after mountain, monorail be as. Yup. I mean, to be honest, the by line, isn't it? No. I don't know. Everybody has their different dividing lines people. What are your dividing lines like when it gets good because I have winning. When it gets classic. Fourth, you eight. So the beginning episode one season four? Yes. What about you? Julia? I'm very generous and I want to say that season two has a lot of really great moments. We get things Homer and season to bar cries. Yes, but is that classic? It is. It is not technically classic. Okay. Say that it it is the golden age season four through eight. You're correct? Counterproposal. If your audience different answer than four, you eight. I have another one. I said b. m. a. m. before monorail after Mana real, there's also a b. b. m. and then ABM before Bartman and after Martin man. And what is your feeling of art? Man? I don't care. I know I know that Michael Jackson, it quickly. If you are lucky enough to have been in LA at the time, the Simpsons took the bowl, which was a Hollywood bowl show where they just did Simpson's music. Conan O'Brien came out and saying, Anka's recommended saying it was amazing. It was they made the entire Hollywood bowl, look, you know, the decorated with Simpson stuff. Weird Al came out. It was so great. It was a perfect night Julia, and I both cried when they did Lisa, it's your birthday. It was so wonderful and special and they closed it with do the Bartman. Oh. Gone to see the Beatles, and then they ended it with like a cover of like one of their, like I like, please, please me song. Wing, Paul talking about what they did backstage. Now that's a closer. Finish exactly. And then they had a record a clip of John yelling. Winston Churchill exactly who read the news. I, I work at mad magazine and. It's just a place of business, but I pitched a joke..

"Okay. So we kind of already hinted to you what the episode is going to be. Let's talk a little bit about what the episode is, and then we're going to ask you guys, why this episode, Dan, but actually just really quickly night attack, I assume most of our listeners are already fans, but can you just let people know what the show is and what part you guys both play? It's an all too honest friendship of ten years largely most of which has happened on Skype conversations effectively. Yeah, you don't think their voices sound identical. So really sound really sound. How out your just chatting. Trying. Like you. Davey Florida. I didn't know. I grew up in Houston, and I went to Norway for a while. He buys the building. So so here's my question about this particular episode is this came out what nineteen ninety two is right. So I honestly ninety two. I know it was early nineties and I couldn't decide given the fact that spinal tap was a parody of older classic rock band documentaries beforehand, I couldn't tell like, are they in on the joke or they the butt of the joke. Plus also you have the fact that one of the spinal tap members Christopher guests who had no, not Chris, forgets. Harry. Sure. Of course it's one of the regular cast members on here, so I'm sure it was an easy phone call for him to get the rest of the band into it, even if they were the butt of the joke, wouldn't it be funny if they were the butt of the joke and Harry shears feelings were hurt, but he didn't realize until after like Mary good print, but also like the point of spinal tap is they are the bottom of the joke.
